SWIFTSURE 33 (RHODES)Hello SailNet Community, My friend and I are in the process of buying a boat for bluewater sailing and travel across oceans, and we found a Swiftsure 33 (Rhodes) that a friend is willing to part with. Does anyone have experience with these designs and can speak to their general seaworthiness? How do they handle storms? Did you have any issues with the centerboard? General safety concerns? How do they stack up to other similar designs/price ranges like the Bristol 32? Thank you all! I was not familiar with this boat, so I cut and paste the exact thread title into the Search Community box at the top of the page and found a half dozen other threads that discussed it over time. I can't personally add more, but I'm sure you'd find those helpful. Looks like @Jeff_H knows the boat. What I read says they were well built and sailed well, for their day. But the last day they were built was in the 60s. ljm22 said: Hello SailNet Community, My friend and I are in the process of buying a boat for bluewater sailing and travel across oceans, and we found a Swiftsure 33 (Rhodes) that a friend is willing to part with. My research echoes what Jeff said: well-built, quality boats. However, with any boat that is 50-60 years old, there are a lot things that will likely need to be replaced or extensively serviced. Having owned old boats myself, I can attest that even the best maintained boats of that vintage need a lot of work. Something is always wearing out, breaking, leaking or just not working anymore. Given enough time and money, you can replace/fix/upgrade everything on a boat that age. But as Jeff says, if the shape of the hull isn't suited for what you want to do, it won't really matter much. I've never sailed a Swiftsure, but I've sailed on lots of CCA-era boats. I think they are beyond a doubt some of the most beautiful things ever created by man. But man, I really don't like the way they sail. First and most importantly, they heel. A lot. By design. The first time I was in a CCA-styled boat in a breeze of between 15 and 20 knots, we nearly buried the rail. I found it exhilarating. For the first twenty minutes. Then I started to get tired of hanging on. And forget about moving about. After an hour or so, we had all had enough so we went back to the dock. I simply cannot imagine the level of effort it takes to actually deal with that kind of motion for a few hours, let alone days on end. The reason for the quick and deep heeling design was based on taking advantage of the racing rating rules under the CCA rule. Very briefly, a boat gets a rating under the rule that is based on several measurements; that rating is like a golf handicap, with time added or subtracted to the boat's elapsed race time based on the rating. One of the key measurements under the CCA rule is the waterline length. CCA rule boats have the shortest waterline length the design can muster because the shorter the water line length, the greater the handicap advantage in the rating. That's where those beautiful bow and stern overhangs come in. When the boat heels, the waterline length effectively lengthens as those pretty overhangs touch the water. The boat therefore sails faster than the rule predicts (longer waterline = faster boat), the owner wins the race, and the designer wins new clients. That short waterline length also impacts the boat in other ways that may be important to you in choosing a boat. Because the boat is shorter in it's midsection, there is less room below. This means less living room and even more importantly for a potential voyager, less storage space for food, water, spares, tools, etc. One other big issue that stopped me from looking further on a Swiftsure: the few examples I saw still had the original Atomic 4 engine. I don't know if your friend's Swiftsure still has the original engine, but if it does, then that's a big red flag. It's at least 60 years old at this point. And even if it's been rebuilt (probably more than once at this point), it's still a gas engine. I'm not wild about the idea of storing a lot of very flammable gasoline on a boat. But more importantly, gas engines with spark plugs do not do well in damp environments, like a boat. Especially boats that are offshore. I wouldn't even consider this boat for offshore use unless it's been repowered with a diesel. And please don't think that repowering a boat is a piece of cake. You will need not just a new engine, but a new fuel tank (think of the work necessary to take out the existing tank), transmission, shaft and prop. Unless you are going to do the work yourself, expect to pay about $10,000 when all is said and done. You certainly could take a Swiftsure offshore and cruise on her; people have crossed oceans and cruised all over the earth on smaller boats (check out Project Atticus on Youtube; a couple that has been cruising for five years aboard a 30' CCA era boat), but there certainly are sacrifices that you would need to make. I don't mean at all to dump on the Swiftsure. One of the prettiest boats. Ever. And very well designed and made. If your idea of cruising is coastal hopping from anchorage to anchorage, then I wouldn't scoff at your choice. And one thing that I remember from my Swiftsure viewings that I found memorable: it has two real pilot berths! But if you really want to cross oceans, then in my humble yet correct opinion, the Swiftsure shouldn't be on your list at all. Top Contributors this MonthGreat choice! Swiftsure 33 (Rhodes)Swiftsure 33 (Rhodes) is a 33 ′ 0 ″ / 10.1 m monohull sailboat designed by Philip Rhodes and built by Amsterdam Shipyard G. de Vries Lentsch and Seafarer Yachts between 1959 and 1965. Rig and SailsAuxilary power, accomodations, calculations. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more. Classic hull speed formula: Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL Sail Area / Displacement RatioA measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more. SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3 - SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement RatioA measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize. Ballast / Displacement * 100 Displacement / Length RatioA measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more. D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³ - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort RatioThis ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more. Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 ) - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening FormulaThis formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more. CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64) Rhodes Design #692 The original design, and a later model marketed as the COMMODORE SWIFTSURE, were both sold through Seafarer Yachts. They share the same hull shape, exterior deck layout, and sailplan (displacement and ballast differ slightly). The first boats, built by G. deVries Lentch, Inc., have a permanently-fixed cabin table with two leaves that fold down when not in use. At the aft end of the table is a hollow stainless pole that runs from the cabin sole to the bottom of the cabin ceiling, through which, runs a housing for the centerboard control cable. The later model, mostly built by Royal Netherlands Aircraft, has a cabin table which completely folds away when not in use, as well as a new centerboard mechanism which operated by a control cable routed inside the port cabinetry. The original SWIFTSURE has bronze deck hardware and fittings, and mahogany trim, while the COMMODORE version is fitted with stainless steel and aluminum hardware with teak trim.
