Renzo Rosso & Diesel, Pure Made in Italy
Style, talent and initiative are the perfect words that fit like a glove for the Successful Designer and Entrepreneur Renzo Rosso that the whole world envies us.
The well-known designer, Founder of DIESEL , a global clothing company and president of OTB, the holding company that controls fashion brands such as Viktor & Rolf, Diesel, Just Cavalli, Marc Jacobs Men and other major brands of high fashion, has done so much to be indicated by Forbes in 2018 to the tenth position in the ranking of the richest men in Italy with estimated assets of 4.1 billion dollars.
Renzo Rosso was born in 1955 in Brugine, a small town in the province of Padua, a destiny almost marked in the field of fashion, which materializes with an important meeting with Adriano Goldschmied, better known as the “godfather of denim”, then at the head of the Genius Group, an important Italian clothing brand.
Rosso was certainly not a designer, but he had the great intuition to take the company to success, so much so that in 1978, together with Goldschmied, he founded Diesel, with the aim of starting a low-cost line to dispose of the advanced fabric from other prestigious brands. From employee to partner until he acquired the shares of Goldschmied in 1985 and thus became the absolute owner of this important denim company, he soon started producing jeans with a vintage look that allowed him to increase his turnover exponentially.
Starting in the nineties Diesel under Rosso’s leadership began to collect important results, his intuition to create a company based on denim when denim was considered the lowest level in the fashion world opens the door to success. The will of this tenacious designer is therefore clearly not to follow trends, but to write them and thus create a distinctive style, the jeans are then treated by hand, aged through rubbing with stones and sandpaper.
The beginnings of this new style are certainly not easy, it is a vintage collection that amazes but at the same time leaves you puzzled, but at the dawn of the 21st century the jeans of Diesel, with their characteristic diagonal stripe on the fifth pocket, become the object of desire par excellence. Important collaborations with the late Karl Lagerfeld, L’Oreal, Fiat, Adidas, Ducati and other important brands start in this way.
Today Renzo Rosso is the prototype of the successful entrepreneur who also founded the non-profit organization Only The Brave Foundation , chairs the company Red Circle, the Diesel Farm in Marostica and the Pelican Hotel in Miami, as well as being the president of the football club L. R. Vicenza. An entrepreneur Renzo Rosso has been able to invest successfully in denim by creating a unique Diesel brand, proud of the made in Italy.

Off the Cuff: Diesel's Renzo Rosso
You’re a very accomplished businessman. I’m curious—what were your first few jobs?
I did so many! Mostly to pay for my studies. I worked in a company making cereal, I was a mechanic, and I was also a carpenter.
Oh, so you like fixing things up?
Well, I bought this yacht from 1929. It not like those really big ones that are all plastic though. It was very old and it took like eight years to remake. In the summertime, I like to bring my friends and children on it.
You travel a ton. Your trips to the U.S. are probably mostly to New York though, eh? Anywhere in the States you’d really like to see?
Yeah, I’d like to go see more of Middle America.
Middle America—really? What?
Yeah, like Old Middle America. New Orleans. I like what I’ve seen on television—these nice statues and people. Outside of the U.S. though I’d love to see more of Asia, Tibet, and The Himalayas. I travel more for business usually.
**And when you go on those trips, after a long day of work, what do you like to kick back and drink? **
A spritz made with prosecco and aperol. It’s becoming more popular in America, but it is an Italian drink!
**What do you like most about being Italian? **
Italian people think nothing is impossible. I like that about them. The only problem is sometimes they escape too much—they only do what they like to do.
That how you feel yourself?
I like to work. It is nice to go from jeans, to a campaign, to doing my own line. I’m very lucky to be able divide my day in so many places. But I could never do something just for money. That’s not me.

Renzo Rosso, slalom sull'acqua.
