  1. Perry Design Review: Ideal 18

The classic Phil Rhodes-designed Penguin dinghy was the first dinghy I skippered. From the Penguin, you could graduate to the Snipe, the Geary 18, the Flying Scot, the Lightning, the Hunt-designed 110 or the bigger 210. The list could go on and on, but the point is these classes have waned, if not almost disappeared. A pair of Ideal 18s.

  3. First Sailboat Buying Advice

I've been looking for a few weeks now for a boat under $3,000 with a trailer and have come across a Pearson Triton 18 and a McVay Victoria 18. I am looking for advice based on the ideal boat for outlined below. The Pearson in particular has been difficult to find information on, I can really only ever find reviews on the larger Triton's.

  4. Ideal 18

The Ideal 18 does have nice lines, even looks like a fast boat, but in reality is very slow and is underpowered. I would look for an Impulse 21; awesome boat for single handing with a self tacking furling jib, and every major sail control led aft (and mostly underdeck) to a centerpod located directly in front of the helm.

Canada's Conneticuit-based yacht designer Bruce Kirby has long been known for the singlehanded Laser. Of course, he has designed numerous boats in the two decades that have passed since the famous dinghy made its debut, and one of the most recent is the Ideal 18. Although this new design is a keelboat, with a crew of two, the basic philosophy behind it is true to the little boat that made ...

The Ideal 18 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fibreglass. It has a fractional sloop rig with aluminum spars and swept spreaders. The hull has a raked stem, a walk-through reverse transom, an internally mounted spade-type rudder controlled by a wooden tiller and a fixed fin keel.It displaces 1,240 lb (562 kg) and carries 700 lb (318 kg) of fibreglass-encased lead ballast.

  8. Review of Ideal 18

The Ideal 18 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel. The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.99 - 1.09 meter (3.25 - 3.55 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

It takes into consideration "reported" sail area, displacement and length at waterline. The higher the number the faster speed prediction for the boat. 14. Ideal 18 Tips

We thought our boat speed was pretty good considering we were sailing a boat with a totally blown out jib and screwed up leech. First, we were using North Sails, and upwind(5-10 knots) I had the jib sheet hooked onto the 3rd hole from the top in the clewboard as we had a deep foot for the light stuff(it was mostly light) and we had a good shape ...

Posts: 872. Ideal 18 or similar. Hi all, I want to get a small sailboat to teach my kids sailing, trailer it to different waters and extend my season a little when our big boat is out of the water. My requirements for the boat are - 1. It has to be small enough that I can trailer and launch every time (don't foresee doing it >12-15 times/year) 2.

Merit 22- Oregon lakes. Jun 11, 2017. #1. I'm afraid I may have to sell my beloved Victoria 18 soon, as my wife just doesn't feel comfortable in it. the Vic is only 5.5' wide, so it is initially tender. With the 550b keel it firms up solid as a rock beyond 15* or so, but she just doesn't feel secure in it regardless.

For comparison, at 19 feet, a Flying Scot has 191 sq. ft., and the Lightning has 177. You should be fine singlehanding on all by the breeziest days. Kurt. Reply Like. vabuckeye Discussion starter.
