So, who owns that mega yacht docked at Wrightsville Beach?

Roy Carroll owns the Skyfall

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - If you haven’t seen it, chances are you’ve heard about it. Skyfall, one of the largest yachts to ever cruise into Wrightsville Beach is the talk of the town.

So, who owns that huge yacht? His name is Roy Carroll.

Carroll, who lives in Greensboro, is the owner of The Carroll Companies, a real estate development firm valued at about $3 billion. He’s no stranger to the Wilmington area. Carroll is the developer of The Avenue , the planned $250 million project located on Military Cutoff Rd. The upscale development will feature luxury living, high-end shops, restaurants and a Westin Hotel. Construction was put on hold because of the pandemic, but is expected to begin this year.

While Skyfall is a luxury charter yacht, Carroll brought it to the Wrightsville Beach Marina for a couple weeks for personal use.

“Skyfall is entertaining friends and family for a couple of weeks prior to departing to the Mediterranean,” Carroll says. “Skyfall will take two and a half to three weeks to reach her destination of Croatia.”

The 191-foot long yacht is booked for charters in the Mediterranean through September. Clearly, it’s going to folks with lots of money. The going rate for a week on Skyfall is $400,000 plus approximately another $100,000 for fuel dockage and tips, according to Cameron Sieradzan, the media director for The Carroll Companies.

Yes, Skyfall is named after the 2012 James Bond movie. The previous owner reportedly paid a pretty penny to use the name. When Carroll purchased the yacht, the name went with it.

“We thought about renaming the yacht, but the name has stuck,” Carroll says. “Plus, we already have the yacht’s theme song.”

Skyfall has 15 crew members and can accommodate up to 14 guests. The yacht features a wine cellar, two hot tubs, a masseuse, two chefs and a helipad that converts to a basketball court.

Carroll also owns Rhino, a 154-foot yacht that will arrive in Wrightsville Beach in a few weeks before heading to New England for the summer.

Skyfall will leave Wrightsville Beach on June 8.

Skyfall boasts huge, light-filled opulent spaces with a timeless and elegant interior.

SKYFALL is currently for sale for an asking price of $29.5m

Superyacht SKYFALL is as iconic as the James Bond movie it shares its name with. Owned by an American real estate developer, the 190-foot motor yacht features a distinctive silhouette and a boatload of stand-out amenities including a panoramic sky lounge, a split-level owner’s cabin and a helipad that converts into a basketball court. As well as being highly appealing to owners, she’s a successful charter yacht that’s renowned for her ability to entertain.

SKYFALL was built by American luxury motor yacht builder Trinity Yachts in 2010 for the shipyard’s owner. “SKYFALL is the most exquisite superyacht ever delivered by Trinity Yachts and is a shining example of American craftsmanship and pride,” says Frank Grzeszczak Sr of FGI Yacht Group. “In a market where yachts of her size are rarely this versatile, SKYFALL stands out as a unique offering. With a Bahamas-friendly draft, aluminum construction, speeds exceeding 20 knots, a flexible seven-cabin layout—including a bi-level primary suite—and expansive lounges, SKYFALL sets herself apart from others in her class.”

The current owner bought her in 2018 from an American automobile tycoon and completed a full refit in 2020, including elegant, timeless interiors by designers Patrick Knowles and Even Marshall. Now, as the owner builds a new, larger, 270-foot yacht with an Italian shipyard, they’ve reluctantly put SKYFALL up for sale.

As SKYFALL enters the market with FGI , the owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, gives Forbes an exclusive look at life onboard the yacht and reveals his favorite experiences and spaces, as well as his top tips for superyacht ownership.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

What initially captivated you about SKYFALL?

Owner: SKYFALL is an iconic yacht. She really has the best of all worlds. She has semi displacement which means she is fast and efficient. She also has a shallow draft that allows her to get into anchorages or ports that other similar sized boats can’t even try to get into. In the Bahamas, for example, it is typical for SKYFALL to be anchored close to shore while other 60-meter (190-foot) boats are a mile or more offshore.

What are your favourite memories onboard SKYFALL?

We have had a lot of fun with family and friends on SKYFALL. The list of great memories onboard is quite long. The bridge deck outdoor dining table is where we always try to have meals unless the weather is very bad. We have had a lot of great discussions with family and friends around that table that will last a lifetime. We also like that the sundeck that has two hot tubs with plenty of space, which is where we have pre-dinner canapes every night while we watch the sun set wherever we might be.

One thing that often grabs people’s attention is the basketball goal that also is a helideck on the sundeck. We have had a lot of competitive games of basketball on sundeck, sometimes with a number of spectators watching from afar.

The top deck of SKYFALL features a basketball court, helipad, pool, hot tub and dining area

What is your favourite space onboard?

The sky lounge is group favorite. It has twin 80-inch TVs, so there isn’t a bad place in the sky lounge to view a game.

Please talk us through the owner’s cabin and how you designed it to suit your lifestyle.

The owner’s cabin on SKYFALL is exactly what we wanted on a boat. The master bed faces the bow with large windows which means we get to wake up every morning to an amazing view. The sitting area is perfect for getting a break from guests when we just need some time to ourselves. The suite also has ‘His and Hers’ separate baths and closets, which is a requirement for us. My wife and I always say that the key to a long and happy marriage is separate bathrooms and closets.

The office in the master suite is a welcome retreat for me so I can get work done privately without being disturbed, and more importantly, without waking up my wife.

A cabin onboard SKYFALL superyacht

Where are your favourite places to visit around the world?

It has always been non-negotiable for our family that we spend New Year’s together in Saint Bart’s on the boat. In early spring, she spends a few weeks in the Bahamas, and then typically we send her over to the Med for the summer season. She then comes back for a quick yard period in the fall, does the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, and then makes her way back to the Caribbean.

What makes SKYFALL such a successful charter yacht?

The feedback from charter guests has been that this is a great multi-generational boat. We have all the fun toys for kids, and lots of relaxing spaces for adults. Three generations in a family can travel together and have a great trip for different reasons. With the multitude of large beds, it is also a great boat for several couples to travel together.

Interiors are elegant and timeless

What first inspired you to become a yacht owner?

Our family had been chartering yachts for about 12 years. More and more we found ourselves wanting to spend time on the water. We had been loosely talking about buying a yacht when we started attending the annual Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. I’m not an impulse buyer, but when we found a boat that we thought would work for our lifestyle, we knew (or rather, my wife knew) that was the boat for us.

What does yacht ownership give you that villa or a hotel ownership couldn’t?

We often talk about how owning a yacht allows you to basically have a home nearly anywhere in the world. We like new places, and we like to explore, but we like to have a familiar home base to come back to at the end of a long day. A yacht gives you the advantage of being in the Med in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter sleeping in the same bed every night.

Guests can enjoy indoor and outdoor dining areas

Why have you decided to put SKYFALL on the sales market – and why now?

We are building a new boat, and it is time to let this one go. We are sad to part with her, but we hope she will find a new family that will create many new memories on her as we have.

What would be your biggest piece of advice to the next owner of SKYFALL?

Have fun with her. That’s what she is for. This boat loves to be used so if you have a destination in mind, she’s ready to go.

The decks have plenty of space for entertainment and relaxation

Want to be the new owner of SKYFALL? Here’s how

SKYFALL is currently for sale for an asking price of $29,500,000. Interested parties should contact the broker, Frank Grzeszczak Sr, Founder & President at FGI Yacht Group , who says: “Simply put, SKYFALL is the finest American superyacht available today. The price has recently been adjusted to $29,500,000, reflecting the seller's commitment to securing a fair price for this extraordinary vessel.”

Creative use of space, unique features and sophisticated flourishes ensure an unparalleled charter experience on board luxury yacht SKYFALL

The 189.99ft /57.91m custom motor yacht 'SKYFALL' was built in 2010 by Trinity Yachts. The yacht’s exterior styling and entire engineering package is thanks to the in-house team at Trinity Yachts, while the luxurious interior design is the work of Patrick Knowles.

Exterior Design

A highlight of the all-aluminium SKYFALL is her shallow draft, which allows her to access shallow waters that other yachts of her size cannot reach. All decks offer alfresco dining options, but the hub of any luxury charter is sure to be the sundeck where a hot tub and shallow splash pool surrounded by sun pads sit forward of a semi-circular bar.

Interior Design

Described as ‘urban contemporary with overtones of Zen’, the interior design of SKYFALL features an abundance of woods and stones, beautifully etched glass and unusual materials such as petrified tree trunks. Other highlights include an unusual foyer aft boasting a statement wine cabinet and a Tiger’s Eye bar top in the sky lounge.

Guest Accommodation

Skyfall's interior layout sleeps up to 12 guests in 7 rooms, including a split-level master suite, 1 VIP stateroom, 3 double cabins, 1 twin cabin and 4 Pullman beds. She is also capable of carrying up to 13 crew onboard to ensure every need is catered for.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

Whether dining alfresco on the raised aft deck, playing cards at the games table in the skylounge or unwinding in the sundeck’s hot tub, charter guests will love the opportunities SKYFALL presents for socializing with family and friends.

Performance & Range

A custom semi-displacement yacht, SKYFALL boasts a state-of-the-art stabilization system, which reduces roll motion and results in a smoother, more enjoyable cruising experience. She also features ‘at anchor stabilizers’, which work at zero speed to increase on-board comfort both at anchor and on rough waters.

Able to reach an impressive top speed of 21 knots, the motor yacht cruises at a more economical 14 knots and has a range of 1,666nm from her 22,000litre fuel tanks, making her an exceptional combination of performance and luxury.

Equipped with an extensive selection of action-packed water toys Skyfall lets you and your guests turn the Mediterranean into your own private playground. You'll be loving the huge adrenaline rush as you zip over the water on one of the two SeaDoo Sport GTR 130 SE WaveRunners. In addition there is a waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. If you enjoy diving you'll appreciate the diving equipment and the PADI certified professionals on board. If that isn't enough Skyfall also features a seabob, wakeboards, bikes, inflatable water toys and paddleboards. When it comes to Tenders, Skyfall has you covered - with two tenders, including a 11.3m/37'1" Intrepid Tender.

Skyfall and her crew are available for charter this summer for cruising within the Mediterranean. She is already accepting bookings this winter for cruising in the Caribbean.

As you can see, luxury motor yacht Skyfall offers guests the very best onboard experience, from its sun-kissed top deck down to its standout waterside beach club promising truly memorable vacations that you"ll want to repeat again and again.

M/Y ‘Skyfall’ sold

Fanatical yacht owner, john staluppi, has sold his 57m motoryacht, skyfall….

Image for article M/Y ‘Skyfall’ sold

Peter Thompson of Thompson, Westwood and White, and HMY Yacht Sales have confirmed the sale of illustrious superyacht owner John Staluppi’s 57m motoryacht, Skyfall , after Frank Grzeszczak and Barbara Stork Landeweer of IYC found a buyer.

Staluppi purchased Skyfall , a 2010 Trinity Yachts build, formerly known as Mi Sueno , second-hand in June 2014 – she had an asking price of $36.95 million at the time of purchase –  before listing her for sale again in October 2014 for $36.5 million.

Listing a yacht for sale immediately after taking delivery is standard protocol for Staluppi – as he once explained in an exclusive interview with The Superyacht Report (issue 179), it’s “because you never know who might jump in”. He added: “No-one wants to have to wait three years. People who can afford these boats are getting up in age. He might be 75… By the time he’ll have finished building a new boat, he’ll be 78.”

With the delivery of his 69m in-build Benetti superyacht, Spectre , scheduled for October this year, it is a timely sale for Staluppi, as he can now concentrate his efforts on overseeing the final phase of this construction.

Skyfall was reduced in price six times before she was sold.

Two weeks ago, he took delivery of a black and red Iguana ‘Commuter’ tender – a range the Normandy-based builder launched very recently – so his preparations for the delivery of  Spectre are clearly underway.

Staluppi’s keenness to sell Skyfall – or his “interim”, as he described her – before the delivery of Spectre was made very clear to the market – he reduced the price six times in total, prior to the sale, three of which occurred since August 2017. She eventually sold with a final asking price of $27.9 million.

In the aforementioned interview with The Superyacht Report in 2017, Staluppi was adamant that Spectre will be his last boat and that he was “really on the fence” about signing the contract for the build. That said, one wonders if he can resist his intrinsic desire to build and own yachts, and how many of his former yachts have passed through construction halls in the past with the same preceding rhetoric.

Staluppi said that he chose Benetti because it was able to offer him the flexibility he was looking for with Spectre , and that the Italian yacht building giant is a “truly unbelievable shipyard”. He considers the Italians to be the best at woodworking, and as the Patrick Knowles-styled interior of Skyfall would suggest, this is an important design aspect for him.
