1996 Gemini 105M The Gemini 105M is one of the most popular cruising catamarans out there.  The 14' beam allows it to be docked in a standard slips. While her 18" draft allows you sail thru some very shallow depths as well.  The Gemini has great accommodations with open spaces and good sailing performance all at an affordable price. It is the ideal boat for a couples and families.  The Gemini 105 M has an efficient catamaran hull. trusted kick up centerboards and rudders. 1998 Performance Cruising Gemini 105 M Fast and comfortable with a shallow draft of 1.5ft and a width of 14ft which makes this cat capable of useing any standard slip.We are the seccond owner and have made many improvements inthe last 5 years to make our boat closer to the MC model which is generally $20,000 more expensive .We installed new swing keels ,custom made by Hunter ,made stainless suppport for the cockpit cover and installed a new throttle/gear contol on the stb side of the wheel. We found this made docking far easier for single handed operation.This boat also has remote steering and remote anchor windlass operation This year we renovated the interior with new wall covering , revarnished teak floors and cabinets,new cushion upholstery and an additional fridge(solar powered) to give more storage room. This boat is has everything needed to sail to the Bahamas tomorrow and is in great shape other than the normal deck crazing that all Gemini's are subject to.She was surveyed in 2014 and given a value of $89,950  and is still insured for that amount

This one is Hull #254 - one of the last few built in the USAMuch roomier than the Farrier tris end the newer model Telstar and solid decks are very convenient for dinghies, dock boxes or just lounging around -- Makes it the most spacious trailerable boat ever... I have both sailed and motored at over 9 knots! Motor steers with the rudder to make this tri turn sharp in a marina. This boat is totally solid and everything works. Pressure water. Propane 2 burner stove. Enclosed head with 5 gal holding tank. Much roomier than the Farrier tris and soldi decks are very convenient.Must be folded after it gets on the trailer with a sub frame to get the boat up high so the folding clears the fenders, but the boat can be launched without getting car wet.Has bathroom, stove, sink with water pressure, and water capacity of 10Gtowing weight 6K Full set of 5 sails. including genoa, storm jib and spinnaker, and roller furling genoa. Because it is EFI [electronic fuel injection like all cars have been for last 30 years]. It is much more fuel efficient and you never need to worry about ethanol gumming up your carb[s]. The Gemini 105 was designed to be affordable, compact, relatively easy vessels for sailors new to catamarans. Production began with the 105M (meaning 10.5 meters), with a design change in 2004 to the 105MC, notable differences being the extended cockpit cover to allow for a full enclosure and a slightly taller mast (while still remaining ICW-friendly). In fact, the “c” in the 105Mc stands for “convertible,” likening the cockpit to that of a sports car. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

After a 2008 Pacific crossing, the owner of a Gemini exclaimed, “the catamaran hull performs flawlessly in open blue water as well as the light winds of the Kona coast … the forward stateroom is queen sized .. the main cabin seats six … plenty of height in the full head with shower.” Great sailing and lots of living space – what’s not to like?

The Gemini is the most popular cruising catamaran in the world with more than 1000 hulls manufactured over nearly 30 years. While most of those hulls are in service as coastal cruisers, many have crossed the oceans. In 2001 the owner, designer and builder of the Gemini catamaran series, Tony Smith, sailed a new Gemini 105Mc across the Atlantic Ocean for a delivery to Southampton, England topping out at 18 knots of speed (surfing down the face of heavy seas). Many more of these adventures are chronicled in the Gemini Gems magazine (print and electronic versions) or the very active Gemini Yahoo forum.

A large cockpit with wheel steering and plenty of room for an afternoon picnic greats the sailor ascending the aft stairs. A generous, hard foredeck is surrounded by a stainless pulpit for the entire bow and lifelines running along the somewhat narrow side decks. With only about 8000 pounds of displacement, anchor chain and rode need not be overly heavy. Sailing a boat with such light displacement across the ocean requires careful consideration of heeling angles and reefing. Anything above seven degrees of heel means it’s time to reduce sail.

Returning to the cockpit allows the sailor access to the interior. Starting at the same level as the cockpit sole, immediately one is greeted by a salon table that comfortably seats four and even eight in a squeeze. Descending a few steps to the left and moving forward is found the head and shower. Hot water is provided by a propane driven instant heater, like an RV or many European homes. The big advantage is that if you have water in the two 35 gallon fresh water tanks, then you can have hot water.

In the aft part of both hulls are two births. The master cabin is in the starboard hull forward, featuring a queen sized bed. There is a tremendous amount of storage for dry goods in the galley and a propane driven refrigerator (using the ammonia cycle instead of a compressor).

The Gemini is mainly driven by the roller furled genoa and somewhat small main, though many sailors add screechers, asymmetrical spinnakers and jibs to their sail lockers. Each hull has a cable driven, hand-cranked centerboard that can be completely tucked into a trunk in the hull, reducing the draft (assuming the rudders are likewise raised), or dropped three feet into the water, dramatically improving upwind performance. While most sailing and motoring can be accomplished with both boards let half-way down, the ability to adjust the boards to wind, current, sailing or anchoring conditions is one of the Gem’s great strengths.

The 105 and 105MC are driven by a 27 HP Westerbeke diesel engine driving a Sillette tilting saildrive. The saildrive is often a source of concern and maintenance is critical on the bellows.

There are three models of the Gemini, the classic (1981-1990), the 3200 and 3400 (1990-1996) and the most popular, the 105M and 105MC (1996-2012). This article focuses on the most popular model, 105M and 105MC, which differ only in details of the interior construction. The classic, 3200 and 3400 were all manufactured in Annapolis, Maryland. Recently, Performance Cruising has partnered with Hunter Marine to manufacture the 105Mc in Alacua, Florida. There are nearly always pre-owned examples of all three types on the market.

The model most likely to be used in blue water is the 105M or 105MC discussed here. For this model, the hull lines were redrawn moving the maximum beam further aft to reduce wave drag. These new hulls have a 9:1 length:beam ratio. The new hulls also have a somewhat higher static stability. The newer hull design is stiffer, increasing seaworthiness for trans-ocean cruising.

The hull is solid GRP, laminated from woven roving and mat with isophthalic polyester resin. An outer layer of polyester resin and gel coat protects against osmosis. The decks and cockpit sole are GRP sandwich with balsa wood core.

Gemini 105 (1997 - 2000)

I 'm looking at the Gemini 32 or 34. I'm finding them around 75K at about 10 years old. I want to live on it and cruise around in the Bahamas and possibly the Caribbean. Anyone with experiences with this particular boat? Thank you  

The Gemini catamaran has had several incarnations... IIRC, the Gemini 3000 was produced from 1981-1990, with about 150 boats made. The Gemini 3200 was roduced from 1990-1993, with about 100 boats built. The Gemini 3400 was produced from 1993-1996, and about 44 of them were made. The Gemini 105M was made from 1996-2003, and the Gemini 105Mc was introduced in 2003. If you're looking at a boat from 1997-2000, it would have to be a Gemini 105M, not a 3200 or 3400. The Gemini 3000 was 30' 6" LOA, the 3200 was 32', the 3400 was 33' 2", and the 105M and 105Mc are 33' 6" LOA. The major difference between the 105M and the 105Mc is the way the interior is constructed IIRC. The hull design was changed between the 3400 and the 105M and increased the load carry capacity of the boat significantly, and made the boat a bit larger. While I have never owned one, I have sailed on the 3000, 105M and 105Mc. There is a pretty significant difference between the 3xxx series boats and the 105xx series boats IMHO. For your purpose, the boat would be an excellent choice IMHO.  

DF we have looked at them extensively, and plan to buy in the spring. They are built to a price point, and for us that is a good thing. The new 105Mc has little teak, uses synthetics, is well laid out for a couple (full size berth), and has all the conveniences of home. Plus they sail well. Owners either love them or hate them, not much in between. There is an active group on yahoo, and the family owned firm is very supportive of their products. The boat seems to be of negotiable quality, depending on who asks and who answers. We found them to be of decent at least as well built or better than "production boat" standards. The UK made outdrive may cause some sneers, but everyone agrees that with proper maintenance, it will be quite serviceable. As with every thing human made there are some compromises. Get a survey by someone who has experience with Cats, and preferably with Gemini's...they are a tad different. All the best on what you decide. Wish we had the house sold for the next step. dave  

I'd agree that the company is pretty supportive of their products, as my boat is also built by Performance Cruising, and they're constantly tweaking and modifying the boat design to make it better, often with owner input.

I also sailed a 105mc recently and they have definitely improved the boat. I'm not sure about the enclosures, but the screacher track across the bows is nice, the feels a bit more open, and the are greatly improved. The nice things about the are it has quite a bit of space (queen sized bunk in master) and still fits in standard slips. It points fairly well due to the dual centerboards. It is nice to have the out of the hulls and avoid the associated smells and . Drawbacks include a bit less easy to manuever in tight quarters with a on the centerline (have to keep centerboards down for marina handling). The Stilette drive leg is kind of a pain. I had a couple of occasions where it popped out of the locked position going into reverse and it was a drill to get it back into forward, locked, and into reverse again before hitting the . If you're talking about a small area in the Carib, you're probably not too worried about heavy seas in the middle of the Atlantic, so that shouldn't be an issue. PDQ will probably hold up it's value for longer (resale value that is), as they're still in high demand and not being made any longer. You can get a new Gemini for the of a used PDQ (at least last I looked, around $160k?). Of course that greatly varies on what you add to the Gemini, and the condition of the PDQ (and if it's the 32 or 36).
