The most common type of motor yacht you can hire in Greece is a yacht with a planing hull. Stylish, sporty and speedy, they’re great for zipping between islands quickly and ensuring you get the most out of your itinerary. If you’re looking to spend most of your time on land or splashing in the sea, a yacht with a planing hull is the top choice for you. 

You’ll also find a superb selection of displacement and semi-displacement superyachts at your disposal (pictured above). These are typically larger and more stable at anchor, with more onboard space for facilities and amenities such as gyms, movie theaters and wellness suites. They’re ideal if you’re chartering with a large group, particularly one that includes children.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Greece

Greece is a playground for sailing yacht rentals , with plenty of yachts available throughout summer. A combination of light winds, clear skies and plenty of anchorages create great sailing conditions across all the islands.

The most popular destinations for sailing charters are typically Corfu, Kefalonia , and the Sporades Islands . Gulet Yacht Charters in Greece

A gulet is a traditionally Turkish-built sailing yacht made out of wood. They are usually two or three-masted and are typically much larger than your average sailing yacht.   Luxury gulet yacht charters  in Greece are very appealing alternatives to both sailing and motor yacht charter. While they usually rely on their motor underway, they are very fuel-efficient and don't require a lot of fuel to get from point A to point B. They have displacement hulls which make them very stable and seaworthy, and typically offer lots of volume and open-plan living spaces.

Greek gulet yachts also tend to be cheaper than other types of charter as they sometimes offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and have a lot of expertise and valuable insight into the area.

But be aware- many gulets are Turkish-flagged, meaning they will need to hold a Greek charter license to start or finish a charter in Greece.

• A sailing yacht charter in Greece averages from $27,200 to $559k weekly plus expenses

In Greece, VAT on a yacht charter is charged at 24% and is based on the value of the yacht. However, this figure can be reduced if the yacht meets specific criteria. 

The three tax brackets are as follows; 

• VAT at full 24%: applies to charters that take place in Greek waters without exiting to non-EU or International waters (Staying within the six nautical miles limit)
• VAT at 24%: with a deduction option for time spent outside of EU waters or in international waters. 
• Discounted at 50% (VAT 12%):for yachts that spend a minimum of 60 % of charter time/days outside of territorial waters. (Territorial waters are considered: six nautical miles from the mainland and six nautical miles from the territorial waters of an island). This also applies to yachts charters commencing outside EU territory and that remain outside for more than 60% of the chartered days and end their charter in Greece.

When is the Best Time for Greek Yacht Charters?

The best time for Greek yacht rentals is between July and August, but warm weather typically extends well into September and even May in certain destinations. The peak of the charter season is usually July, although August historically has the hottest temperatures. 

Between June and August, you can expect highs of 85 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit (26 - 32 degrees Celsius) in Athens, with even hotter temperatures recorded further south.

Where Should I Begin My Greece Yacht Charter?

By far the most common embarkation point for a  Greece yacht rental vacation is Athens . Around 90% of the Greek charter fleet has a homeport in Athens, and there are numerous luxury marinas that cater to superyachts.

However, for those looking to charter around the Ionian Islands in destinations like Corfu , Cephalonia and Zakynthos , you may wish to begin your charter closer to your desired destination. 

It is possible to begin or end your charter elsewhere in Greece. However, you may have to consider the cost of repositioning as the fleet is mostly based out of Athens. 

If you want to meet the yacht elsewhere – for example, Santorini, Mykonos –  you can expect to pay a hefty repositioning fee. It’s generally more economical to begin your Greek yacht charter in Athens and spend the day cruising to your desired start point, enjoying your yacht to the fullest, and soaking up the scenery as you travel underway.

Around the main yachting hubs of Greece, you’ll find plenty of marinas that cater to a variety of yachts of different sizes. However, be aware that Greece doesn’t have as many big marinas as destinations such as the South of France or Italy , and demand for slips can be very high in peak season.

• Zea Marina:  located in Piraeus, Athens, which is the largest seaport in Greece and one of the largest harbors in all of Europe. It's a hive of activity, offering 670 slips up to 150m.
• Athens Marina : revered marina, accommodating 130 slips measuring up to 130m. Provides plenty of amenities on land, including a helipad service.

How to Book Your Yacht Charter in Greece

Greece is one of the most popular charter destinations in the Mediterranean. Therefore, advanced booking (three to six months ahead) is absolutely essential in order to secure your dream yacht on your preferred dates in the perfect destination. 

When it comes to Greece yacht rentals, many charterers are repeat clients; meaning they’ve already booked the yacht once, fallen in love with the yacht and its crew, and chosen to return again to explore a new destination. This means that competition for yachts is fierce and it’s even more crucial to kickstart the booking process early. 

Don’t forget that your choice of yachts in Greece is comparatively smaller than Italy or the South of France since all yachts beginning or ending a charter yacht in Greece must have a Greek charter license.

Most itineraries for yachts around Greece begin in Athens because around 90% of the charter fleet in Greece has a homeport in Athens. Therefore, the yachts are usually based in the country’s capital, and you will most likely have to pay a repositioning fee if you’d like to begin elsewhere in Greece.

A Greek yacht charter license is a special permit that allows yachts to begin and end a yacht charter in Greece. Not all yachts hold a Greek charter license, so you will need to speak to your charter broker for more information about starting and finishing a charter in Greek waters.

You could start a yacht charter in Mykonos, but you will most likely have to pay a hefty repositioning fee as most yachts have their homeport in Athens. To get the most out of your yacht charter, it’s usually best to begin in Athens and spend the night underway to reach Mykonos.

The most popular destinations for sailing vacations in Greece are the Ionian Islands. However, great sailing conditions exist across the country, and other popular hotspots include the Dodecanese Islands, the Sporades Islands and the Saronic Islands. 

The standard Value Added Tax (VAT) is 24%, and it is calculated based on the value of the yacht. The VAT can be reduced in certain circumstances; read our guide above.

The Cyclades Islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos are great for exploring on a luxury yacht charter during summer. The best times to visit are between June and September when you can expect long days and warm sea temperatures. Presented by DMA Yachting, the impressive charter yacht MY WAY is a 72 ft motor yacht featuring a jetski. The main attractions of MY WAY are her most appealing features and inviting socializing areas. MY WAY spends the summer and winter season in Greece. She was constructed by the renowned boatbuilder Ferretti in 2002. A succesful refit was finalized in 2022. The expansive yacht layout features 4 generous cabins and comfortably accommodates up to 8 guests.

MY WAY is classified as a superyacht. The prominent section of the yacht, generous aft deck, leads to the attractive and sleek main salon. The main saloon is a well-design space that is well-equipped to shield from the elements in comfort and enjoyment and boasts a number of entertainment options. 4 tasteful cabins are purposefully laid out with vison for maximum room, access, comfort and privacy.

Crew information, captain: george garifalou.

Captain: George Garifalou George was born in Athens. He graduated from the Hellenic Navy Academy in 2003 and started his professional career as a Hellenic Navy Officer. After 20 years of successful professional career in the Greek Navy he retired at the rank of Captain and began his career in commercial yachting. George has captained numerous boats up to 70 meters. With his vast navigation, engineering experience and extensive knowledge of the Greek waters he makes sure that guests will receive the highest level of service while cruising safely to some of the most beautiful bays and amazing islands in the world. George speaks Greek & English. Chef: Andreas Polyrakis Andreas was born in Chania, Crete. After successfully graduating from the school of tourism professions (chef) in Heraklion, Crete, he followed a 20-year career as a chef in European, Italian, Mexican, Asian, Mediterranean and Greek cuisine in restaurants such as: Nice & Easy Asteras Vouliagmeni, Golf Club Glyfada Athens and Ark (Chef Baxevani's team) in Glyfada which have been awarded as the best restaurant of traditional Greek cuisine in Greece. His second love for the sea led him to yachting. For the second season Andreas is on the "MY WAY" team fulfilling this dream of his, providing guests with his exceptional and amazing cooking. Andreas speaks Greek & English. Stewardess: Zoe Vaila Zoe was born in Athens. After her studies in Business Administration started her professional studies in classical ballet, modern dance, jazz, latin in the National School of Dance. After a successful carrier as a classic ballet dancer and teacher (P. Metaxopoulos Dance School, D. Tsoukala Dance School), her love for the sea led her to yachting industry. She has 3 years of professional yachting experience as a solo stewardess. Her duties include housekeeping, interior cleaning, bar tendering and guest service. Zoe is a hard - working organizer, enjoys challenges and takes pride in providing excellent service to those onboard. Zoe speaks Greek & English. Deckhand: Kostas Kostas was born in Tajikistan and moved permanently to Greece in 1992, because of his Greek father. He studied Law in Moscow university and he was worked in the construction business as a construction contractor. His love for the Greek sea moved him in the yachting industry aiming to be yacht-master in motor yachts. He has 4 years of professional yachting experience and he holds a License for Motor Yacht Skipper up to 24 meters. His duties include maintenance, exterior cleaning, water-toys and tender operations. With his excellent sailor skills and his warm smile, Kostas looks forward to ensuring that all guests have a memorable time during their stay on board MY WAY. Kostas speaks Greek, Russian and English.

Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). American tourist found dead on scenic Greek island identified

Five tourists on the Greek islands have been reported missing or dead in June.

An American tourist found dead over the weekend on a beach on the Greek Island of Mathraki has been identified by authorities.

Toby Sheets, a 55-year-old New Yorker, died from drowning, Ioannis Aivatidis, the coroner in Corfu, Greece, who performed the autopsy, told ABC News on Tuesday.

The U.S. Embassy in Greece was working to facilitate the transfer of Sheets' body back to the United States.

Sheets, of Long Island, New York, worked at an American thoroughbred racehorse trainer and was the former assistant to famed racehorse trainer Steve Asmussen, the Thoroughbred Daily News , which covers the horse racing industry, reported on Tuesday.

"Toby was a part of our stable for many years... He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends," Asmussen told the Thoroughbred Daily News, adding that Sheets was involved in the training of Creator, the horse that won that 2016 Belmont Stakes.

Sheets is the latest in a series of foreign tourists found dead or reported missing in the scenic vacation paradise in the past week, authorities said.

His remains were discovered at about 1:30 p.m. local time Sunday on a beach near the old port of Mathraki Island, the president of the community of Mathraki Island told ABC News.

Sheets was last seen alive on June 11 at a tavern in Mathraki, west of Corfu Island, where he was staying with a Greek American friend, investigators told ABC News.

The friend called the police after he returned home Thursday and found the door of the house open, the lights on, and the air conditioning unit running, but no sign of Sheets or his identification and travel documents, according to investigators.

Mathraki has no police station or coast guard. Law enforcement officers from Corfu were called in to assist with the investigation.

It marked the second time in a week that an American tourist had been reported missing on the Greek Isles.

A search continued Tuesday for a retired Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy who also went missing on June 11 on the Greek Island of Amorgos, officials said. The retired deputy, identified by Greek authorities as 59-year-old Albert Calibet of Hermosa Beach, California, was reported missing when he failed to return from a hike, officials said.

Drone video obtained by ABC Los Angeles station KABC showed rescue crews searching the rocky terrain where they believed Calibet was hiking.

"We're sick to our stomachs, knowing he's out there somewhere," Calibet's girlfriend, Debbie Leshane, told KABC.

Leshane said Calibet called her just before leaving to go on a hike. She said they spoke for about six minutes and that Calibet later sent her a photo about 9:20 a.m. local time Tuesday from the trailhead sign. She said that was the last she heard from him.

On Tuesday, K-9 units were brought to Amorgos to assist in the search for Calibet, local police told ABC News.

On Saturday, a missing 74-year-old Dutch tourist was found dead on the eastern Greek island of Samos, according to The Associated Press .

The body of the Dutch tourist, whose name has not been released, was discovered by firefighters using a drone. He was found lying face down in a ravine 330 yards from the spot where he was last seen walking. The cause of the Dutch tourist's death has not been disclosed.

Officials said the Dutch tourist was reported by observers to be having some difficulty hiking in the triple-digit heat that has enveloped the islands.

Some of the five tourists missing or found dead were believed to have been hiking during a heatwave that has enveloped Greece with triple-digit temperatures and caused the deaths of several people from heat stroke, authorities said.

On June 9, Michael Mosley, a noted British TV anchor and author, was found dead on the the island of Symi. A coroner concluded that the 67-year-old Mosley died from natural causes around June 5, shortly after going for a hike over treacherous, rocky terrain, the BBC reported. Konstantia Dimoglidou, a spokesperson for the Greek police, told the BBC that an autopsy found no trauma on his body that could have caused his death.

The body of a missing American man has been found on the small Greek island of Mathraki.

He was discovered on a rocky and remote beach on Sunday - three days after being reported missing by the friend he was staying with.

The tourist had last been seen on Tuesday at a cafe with two women who have since left the island.

Mathraki has a population of just 100 people, and is a heavily wooded island to the west of Corfu.

There have been several recent cases where tourists have died or gone missing on Greek islands, with many setting out on hikes in high temperatures.

On Saturday, the body of a 74-year-old man from The Netherlands was discovered by a fire service drone, lying face down in a ravine.

He was found just 300m (984ft) from where he had last been seen six days earlier - walking with difficulty in blistering heat.

Greek officials are continuing to search for three missing tourists in The Cyclades group of islands.

Two French women aged 64 and 73 were reported missing on Sikinos on Friday - and had left their hotels to meet up.

Meanwhile, a search is continuing for a 59-year-old American tourist who went for a solo hike in hot conditions on Amorgos and hasn't been seen since Tuesday.

The body of British TV doctor Michael Mosley was discovered on the Greek island of Symi on 9 June - four days after he went missing.

He had gone for a walk on his own from Saint Nikolas Beach, and CCTV footage appeared to show him falling over close to where his body was found.

The 67-year-old's wife Clare described him as a "wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband" - and said her family had been comforted by the many tributes paid to him.

She added: "We're taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it.

"He did an incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn't be easily seen by the extensive search team.

British TV Doctor Michael Mosley Found Dead in Greece

After a four-day search, Greek officials said on Sunday they had found the body of Dr. Michael Mosley, a British medical journalist and documentary maker who disappeared last week while on a trip on the Greek island of Symi.

His body was found on a beach in Agia Marina, said the mayor of Symi, Eleftherios Papakalodoukas.

His disappearance had prompted an extensive search that called in firefighters, police officers and volunteers. The authorities also used dogs and drones, and the Greek coast guard also joined the effort as fears escalated that Dr. Mosley had drifted out to sea.

A spokeswoman for the Greek police, Constantina Dimoglidou, said the mayor, who was on a boat patrolling the coast with reporters from the state news television channel Ert, spotted Dr. Mosley’s body and recognized his blue shirt from the last pictures of him captured on security cameras.

Dr. Mosley, 67, a BBC journalist, had arrived on Tuesday on Symi, part of the Dodecanese islands in the Aegean Sea, for a weeklong trip. He told friends at Agios Nikolaos beach on Wednesday afternoon that he would walk back to his accommodation in Symi town, the local authorities said.

The walk is about two miles, depending on the route taken. When hours passed with no sign of Dr. Mosley, his wife, Dr. Clare Bailey Mosley, reported him missing to the police.

Search efforts shifted north, toward Agia Marina, on Friday after footage emerged from security cameras in the village of Pedi — about halfway between Agios Nikolaos and Symi town — showing what appeared to be Dr. Mosley carrying an umbrella.

The terrain in the north, above Agia Marina, is significantly more rugged and dangerous.

The police said that Dr. Mosley did not have his phone on him during the walk, and was last seen by a witness at a bus stop in Pedi.

“It’s devastating to have lost Michael, my wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband,” Dr. Mosley’s wife said in a statement on Sunday, according to the BBC .

Dr. Clare Bailey Mosley added: “We’re taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it. He did an incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn’t be easily seen by the extensive search team.”

Over the years, many British viewers relied on Dr. Mosley, a longtime investigator of science and health, for his myth-busting advice on diet, exercise and sleep. Trained as a doctor before venturing into television, Dr. Mosley hosted the popular BBC health podcast “Just One Thing” and appeared on the show “ Trust Me, I’m A Doctor .”

He produced a variety of health and science programs for the broadcaster, and often offered himself up for experimentation in the documentaries he presented. He swallowed parasites and participated in a clinical trial of magic mushrooms , but he was most widely known for popularizing the 5:2 diet , a form of intermittent fasting that involves five days of normal eating and two days of fasting each week.

He was nominated in 2002 for an Emmy for “The Human Face,” a series examining the science behind beauty.

More recently, he had released two series with the British Channel 4 broadcaster investigating obesity in Britain and the nutrition behind the grocery shopping of everyday consumers. He had toured Britain this year with his wife, a doctor and health columnist, with an interactive live show focused on healthy living.
