The Newport 28 was one of the longer-lived small production cruising boats, having been in production from 1974 through 1987. Almost 1,000 of the C&C-designed boats were built by Capital Yachts of Harbor City, California. There is a strong family resemblance between the Newport 28 and other C&C designs of the same period. In addition to the Newport 28, Capital built the Newport 41, another mid-1970s C&C design. The styling of both boats is characterized by the sweeping attractive sheerlines for which C&C is justifiably known. As with any boat whose production run spanned more than a decade, many changes were made in the Newport 28, both outside and inside, over the years. The original scimitar-shaped keel and rudder gave way to more modern high aspect ratio appendages with 1983 models, increasing draft from 4′ 6″ to 5′ 2″. A shoal draft version drawing 4′ was optional, but less popular than the deep-keel boat. Versions with the modern keel are designated Newport 28-II. Sailing Performance The Newport 28 has a tall, high aspect ratio masthead rig. The newer deep keel models are about six seconds per mile faster than the original version of the boat, which typically sails with a PHRF rating of 192. This is comparable to other cruiser-racers of the same size. Despite a fairly high ballast/displacement ratio, owners report that the boat is tender. This is due in part to the fairly round midship section, and in part to the fact that few 28′ boats are really very stiff. Racing in Newport 28s is quite keen in some areas, particularly on the West Coast, where there are large fleets that race both as one-designs and under PHRF. The boat is a competitive PHRF racer, and enough boats have been rated so that its handicap appears fair. This means you are likely to get a rating based on the boat’s performance, not on your own sailing ability. Most owners report that the boat is very well balanced. This is typical of C&C designs, which usually have fairly small mainsails. With a large foretriangle and a small mainsail, it may be necessary to rake the mast aft slightly to give the boat a little weather helm. It’s far easier to add weather helm than to reduce it. Construction Make no mistake about it, the Newport 28 is a boat built to a price. A common complaint by owners is mediocre fitting of woodwork, leaking hull-to-deck joint, cockpit drains that are too small, plastic valves on through hull fittings, inadequate backing plates for hardware—in short, the entire litany of problems associated with boats built to be low in price. One owner who races his boat hard noticed a large crack in the hull molding aft of the primary sheet winches, and discovered that he could see daylight through it. Apparently, the hull had been cracked in removing it from the mold, and the cracked patched over with auto body filler. This was on a new boat. The factory made good on that one. Why would so many people buy a boat that apparently has a history of minor construction flaws and mediocre quality control? The answer, according to owners, is that the basic styling, accommodations, and performance are better than other boats of the same size and type, making up for other shortcomings. When you buy a Chevrolet you know in advance that it isn’t going to be built like a Mercedes. The interior is one factor that many owners report is a major influence in their decision to buy a Newport 28. With a waterline length of 23′ 6″, there’s a lot of interior for a 28′ boat. Despite the fairly low freeboard and pronounced concave sheer, there is just over 6′ of headroom on centerline over the main cabin. The pronounced camber of the main cabintop keeps the deckhouse profile low, but at the expense of headroom, which diminishes very quickly away from the centerline. Fortunately, on a boat this small you’re almost always walking near the centerline. There have been three basic interior arrangements over the years: galley along the starboard side of the main cabin, galley aft on the port side, and galley aft on the starboard side. On later models, only the two aft galley configurations were available. The galley aft on starboard side is the only layout that offers a stove with oven, due to the setup of the main cabin settees. Unfortunately, this galley arangement required cutting away the starboard main bulkhead beneath the chainplates to make the starboard settee long enough for sleeping, which in our opinion is a structural compromise. Since there are four other berths in the boat—two forward, the port settee, and a quarterberth—using the starboard settee as a berth isn’t necessary with anything less than a full crew. For family cruising, it is likely that at least one member of the crew would be short enough to use the starboard settee even without the foot extension. Originally, the boat was equipped with the Atomic Four gasoline inboard, a standard engine in most auxiliaries until the proliferation of diesel power in the early 1980s. Diesel power was optional until the introduction of the 28-II model. Some boats have Yanmar diesels, others Universal. It took the builder a while to decide which diesel engine to use, as owners report engines ranging in horsepower from 11 to 18. To most owners, there appears to be little difference in performance between diesel engines of various sizes. All of the Universal diesels should be adequate for the boat, and the Atomic Four is far more power than she needs. Obviously, the diesel engine is a big plus when shopping for a used boat. Retrofitting a diesel on a gas-powered boat of this size is usually more expense than can be justified unless you’re planning to keep the boat for a long time. Access to the engine for service varies from awful to good, depending on the model year. Fortunately, newer models have better access from the interior as well as a flush hatch in the cockpit sole directly over the engine. Buying A Used Boat Because so many owner complaints center on fairly mediocre construction detailing, a used boat should be carefully surveyed before purchase. Particular attention should be paid to structural details of the hull-to-deck joint, attachment of bulkheads, and mounting of deck hardware. Obviously, a later model boat with a diesel engine is more desirable than an older boat with a gas engine. We would also consider the 28-II version with updated keel and rudder to be more desirable than the earlier design. Because of the large number of Newport 28s built, at any given time there are a number of boats on the market. This means you should be able to find the combination of ingredients you’re looking for for in age, power plant, keel, and interior layouts—especially if you’re shopping on the West Coast. It would be a good idea to look at all three interior arrangements before making a decision, although if you opt for a newer boat your choice will be between the two aft galley interiors. Some of the boats have been seriously upgraded by owners, including such things as larger cockpit drains and higher quality hull hardware. We would be wary about any boat that showed a lot of inexpert do-it-yourself characterisitics, such as caulking along the hull-to-deck joint, around the ports, or around the chainplates. Although a tiller is standard, a fair number of boats have been equipped with wheel steering, either as an original option or as a retrofit. The steering pedestal takes up far less room than the tiller, but it does require that the helmsman sit all the way in the back of the boat. While this arrangement keeps the cockpit less crowded for racing, it also puts all the helmsman’s weight at the aft end of the boat—not a good place for it. In addition, the helmsman on a wheel-steered boat cannot reach either the mainsheet or the jib sheets, a serious shortcoming. He furthermore has trouble hiding from rain and spray under a companionway dodger. Life for the helmsman on a wheel-steered Newport 28 will be a lonely one. Wheel steering, being hardly necessary on a boat this size, is hardly desirable on the Newport 28. The Newport 28 is a good entry-level cruiser-racer for someone wanting a reasonable combination of accommodations and performance, as long as you’re not too persnickety about details. It would be a reasonable compromise for someone who likes more traditional appearance in a modern boat, but doesn’t have the money to spend for a higher-quality boat of the same size and type, such as a Sabre 28. Biggest Trailerable Sailboats Last Updated by Daniel Wade June 15, 2022 Many sailboats up to about 27 feet in length can be trailered safely on American roads. These vessels are limited by weight, beam, and overall height. In this article, we'll go over ten of the best large trailerable sailboats on the market. These vessels feature comfortable cabins, excellent sailing characteristics, and they all meet the requirements for towing on U.S. highways. The best and largest trailerable sailboats are the Cal 20, the Catalina 22, the O'Day 240, The Islander 24, the Moore 24, the Cal 25, the Helms 25, the MacGregor 26, and the Nor'Sea 27. Most of these vessels can be towed behind a well-equipped truck or SUV. We sourced information and vessel specifications for this article from sailboat manufacturers and record books. We also considered the opinions of sailors who own these vessels and sail them regularly. Table of contents What Makes a Sailboat Trailerable?Trailerable sailboats must meet certain requirements in order to operate on American roads. The primary limitations are width (beam), as the vessel and its trailer must fit in regular traffic lanes and through tunnels. Another consideration is weight, as the vessel should be light enough to be towed by a 3/4 ton or 1-ton pickup truck. Generally speaking, there's not a specific limit to boat weight in order to be towed. That said, most single and tandem-axle trailers can't exceed about 3,300 pounds per axle. With that in mind, the upper limit for a trailerable sailboat is around 7,000 to 8,000 pounds. Keel type is an important factor to consider, as it determines how high off the ground the boat has to ride on the trailer. The majority of trailerable sailboats have a centerboard or swing keel that retracts for towing and beaching. Some vessels have shorter displacement keels or fin keels. The maximum allowable for a trailerable sailboat is 8 ft 6 in. This is because these dimensions are the maximum limit for standard trailers on American roads. A larger boat can be transported on the road, but only as an oversize load. In practice, very few trailerable sailboats have a beam of exactly 8 ft 6 in. The majority of large trailerable sailboats have a beam of between 7 1/2 ft and 8 ft 3 in. This makes it easier to negotiate tunnels and tighter traffic lanes. Overall LengthThe maximum trailer length for standard trailers is 65 ft, but it's nearly impossible for a trailerable sailboat of this length to meet the width requirements. In practice, the longest trailerable sailboats are around 30 ft in length or shorter. The average is about 20 to 25 ft. In most states, the maximum height for a trailer load is 14 ft. This necessitates that the mast folds down and that the keel and vessel height combined doesn't exceed 14 ft. You must also take into account the height of the trailer, as a tall boat may not be able to clear highway overpasses. 10 Largest Trailerable SailboatsTrailerable sailboats come in all shapes and sizes, including some large and roomy configurations. The vessels we chose range in length from 19 ft to 27 ft, and they offer the best accommodations on the market. Here are ten of the best large trailerable sailboats. 1. West Wight Potter 19It's impossible to write an article about trailerable sailboats without mentioning the West Wight Potter 19. This vessel is perhaps the best and most capable in its class, and it offers surprisingly comfortable accommodations for a lightweight trailerable sailboat. The West Wight Potter 19 is easy to sail fast and features a roomy cabin with a sink and space for a head. It's considered a pocket Cruiser, and it is very popular in coastal areas. Due to its lightweight construction, this fiberglass sailboat is trailerable behind an SUV or half-ton pickup. The West Wight Potter 19 has positive buoyancy material throughout the whole, making it effectively unsinkable. Additionally, the mast and rigging collapse and set up in minutes. These vessels were produced up until recently, so they're common on the used market. - Lightweight

The Cal 20 has been around for decades, and this capable racing boat is ideal the coastal cruising and sailing in semi-protected waters. That said, it's also quite seaworthy, as several have participated in TransPac races between San Francisco and Hawaii. The Cal 20 is known for its low-profile cabin and easy trailering. At 20 ft in length overall, the Cal 20 is well within limits for trailering on American roads. While not the lightest trailerable sailboat on the list, a well-equipped pickup truck should tow it without issues. The Cal 20 isn't the boat to choose if you're looking for the most spacious accommodations. That said, the cabin is functional, and the boat excels in handling. It's fast, safe, and agile, thanks to its long and thin profile. It's also a joy to sail in all kinds of weather conditions. - Easy to sail

3. Catalina 22The Catalina 22 is one of the most famous large trailerable sailboats ever built. It's one of Catalina's most popular models, and it was a big hit in the 1970s and 1980s. The Catalina 22 has a spacious and thoughtfully designed cabin with a wide companionway and a comfortable V-berth. The Catalina 22 is a centerboard boat. This means that the keel retracts into the hull for trailering and lowers down easily using a system block-and-tackle or a crank. The vessel is 7.67 feet wide, making it easy to tow on typical American highways. The vessel is still produced today, and over 15,000 have been built since 1969. However, with a width of 8 ft 3 in, the O'Day 240 approaches the upper limit of trailerable dimensions. The vessel weighs more than comparably sized boats, so you'll need a more powerful vehicle to tow it. The cabin of the O'Day 240 stands out. It features a V-berth, berthing aft, a galley, and space for a head. There's ample headroom throughout the cabin, which makes the O'Day 240 ideal for extended coastal cruising. - Stable Spacious cabin

5. Islander 24Islander is known for its larger sailboats (28 feet and larger), though it has produced a few excellent trailerable models. We chose the trailerable Islander 24, as it's known in the sailing community for its speed, comfort, and easy handling. The phrase "they don't build them like they used to" applies to the Islander 24. When this vessel was designed in the early 1960s, boat manufacturers used more fiberglass and produced thicker hulls. This practice is costlier and made the boat weigh more. But it produced stronger vessels that last much longer than their flimsier contemporaries. This fiberglass sailboat is thoughtfully designed and is well-suited for coastal cruising in the 21st century. It features stronger construction than similar models, and its keel design encourages stable and comfortable sailing. - Strong hull and deck

6. Moore 24The Moore 24 was the first in a new class of vessels called the ultralight displacement sailboat. It has the handling characteristics have a large keelboat but the dimensions of a coastal cruising trailer-sailer. From the outside, the flush deck of the Moore 24 looks like it couldn't possibly accommodate a cabin. Closer inspection reveals that the vessel has a roomy cabin that resembles that of much larger boats. It features a galley, a head, a V-berth upfront, and attractive paneling throughout. The Moore 24 is a pocket cruiser by all definitions. It's an excellent choice for those looking for a trailerable and seaworthy sailboat. Though a bit taller than some other models, the vessel is still well within limits for on-road transportation. - Excellent handling

The Cal 25 is essentially a stretched version of the Cal 20. It features the same basic hull design with the iconic flush deck and streamlined cabin. However, it's faster, offers superior accommodations, and it's more seaworthy. The Cal 25 is known for its stiff handling characteristics in high winds. This is primarily due to its 1,700-pound lead keel, which keeps it upright and tracking straight. However, this does increase the overall weight of the vessel, which is an even 4,000 pounds dry. Thankfully, this is within the towing capacity of most standard pickup trucks. The interior of the Cal 25 resembles the cabins of larger boats. In other words, it doesn't feel cramped. There's a large sitting area across from the galley and partitions separating the V-berth from the rest of the cabin. Overall, the Cal 25 is an excellent compact sailboat for racing or cruising. - Good accommodations

8. Helms 25The Helms 25 is a compact vessel with a true swing keel. Unlike a centerboard, which descends through the hull straight down, a swing keel swings down on the hinge and occupies less space inside of the vessel. With the removal of the centerboard trunk, the Helms 25 retains its trailerable properties while freeing up living space in the cabin. The Helms 25 is long and fast but not particularly tall. It fits well on a trailer, and its rounded hull doesn't pound in choppy water. The cabin is comfortable and features a small but usable galley, a table with two seating areas, a V-berth, and additional berthing aft. Some versions of the Helms 25 also feature a separate head area between the V-berth and the central living spaces. The Helms 25 strikes the perfect balance between comfort, seaworthiness, and trailerability. It's safe and fun to sail and sells on the used market for affordable prices. - Spacious cabin

9. MacGregor 26The MacGregor 26 is larger and more modern than most of the sailboats on our list. At first glance, the dimensions of the MacGregor 26 seem unusual. The hull shape resembles a bathtub, and the vessel's high profile is notable. These characteristics make it stable and easy to handle, and they also give it exceptional headroom in the cabin. The McGregor 26 came in numerous configurations, which are designated with letters such as '26D' and '26M.' These include various cabin window orientations, colors, accessories, and interior layouts. Multiple people rescued from Lake Michigan in less than a day; teen and woman deadBy Lauren Victory , Marissa Perlman , Joe Donlon , John Dodge , Shardaa Gray Updated on: June 18, 2024 / 11:28 AM CDT / CBS Chicago CHICAGO (CBS) — Three separate incidents on Lake Michigan in less than a day led to multiple people needing to be pulled from the water, and left two people dead. On Monday morning, two teenagers went out into Lake Michigan on a kayak, which flipped over, according to Chicago police. A 16-year-old girl was pulled to shore by a witness on Montrose Beach. A 16-year-old boy was pulled out of the lake by Chicago Fire Department divers. The Fire Department posted a photo on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, of rescue teams attempting CPR on one of the individuals. The department said a CFD helicopter was used to spot the victims and dropped divers to rescue them. The boy was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital, where he died. No other injuries were reported. Area detectives were investigating the incident. "If you fall off a boat, tip over, windy conditions, waves, if it waves the wrong way, if you're wearing a pfd [personal flotation device], that could save your life," said Chicago Fire Lt. William Davis. "It could keep you at the surface so we can be able to retrieve you quickly." Then, on Monday afternoon, two more people were rescued after nearly drowning in Montrose Harbor. The Chicago Fire Department said a man and a woman were in a "no swim" area in the lake south of the beach. The woman became unresponsive and was given CPR by a passerby. She was resuscitated and taken to Weis Hospital in fair condition. The man was also pulled from the water and taken to the hospital. The witness who tried to help the woman spoke to CBS 2. "It was like me and the other guy over there, we were giving CPR to the guy first, it was the other guy and then to the girl, I was the one who gave CPR," said Natalie Pastor. Witnesses said the swimmers appeared to be in their 20s. It took five or six people to pull the man out of the water and about three to pull out the woman. Both swimmers were expected to be released. Sailboat capsizes near WinnetkaA woman swam two miles to get help, after her 12-foot sailboat capsized in Lake Michigan near north suburban Winnetka on Sunday. Another woman who had been missing was later pulled from the water. The U.S. Coast Guard spent hours searching for the second woman overnight, and pulled her from the water early Monday. Her condition was not immediately available. The sailboat launched out of Evanston on Sunday, and capsized around dusk near Winnetka. Officials said, around 2 a.m., one woman onboard the sailboat made it to shore after swimming two miles to Tower Road Beach. She told officials a second woman who went missing after the boat flipped was also wearing a life vest. That second woman, 53-year-old Cristen Bolan, was brought to shore at Montrose Harbor in Chicago around 7 a.m. Monday, after being found about a mile offshore north of Winnetka. She was later pronounced dead, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. Multiple boats, drones, and helicopters were involved in the search. It's unclear what caused the boat to capsize. This all came after an incident on Saturday afternoon when a man in his late 50s fell off a boat and into the water in the Playpen near Navy Pier. He never returned to the surface and search crews could not find him before transitioning their operations to recovery mode. High number of Lake Michigan drowningsOf all the great lakes, Lake Michigan is by far the most dangerous for swimmers. According to the Great Lakes Current Incident Database, about 450 people drowned between 2002-2020, about double the number of all the other Great Lakes combined. That database only accounts for drownings in which currents were a factor and doesn't include accidents like the one Saturday in the Playpen. Currents are more dangerous on the eastern side of the lake, with incidents most common around Warren Dunes State Park and Holland State Park. According to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, 22 people drowned in the Great Lakes in 2024, including seven on Lake Michigan. However, those numbers were last updated on June 9. Last year, there were 85 drownings on the Great Lakes, including 41 on Lake Michigan. Since the project began in 2010, 2018 was the deadliest year for drownings, with 117 on all Great Lakes and 43 on Lake Michigan. Dave Benjamin, co-founder and executive director of the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, said the beginning of "drowning season" coincides with the beginning of summer. "This is a time of year where the warm weather drives everyone to the beach, and water safety is not generally common sense—not just in the Great Lakes region, but nationwide," Benjamin said. "People have the assumption that they may know how to swim, or some swimming or ability, but they often overestimate their abilities—and Lake Michigan has a lot of extra hazards compared to your normal pool." Benjamin noted that panic is the first stage of drowning—which many do not realize. "So they're in the water, they're fine, they're having a good time—but say if they just inhaled a tiny bit of water, their throat closes up, they go to instant panic," he said. "When you're in instant panic, you're fighting to get out of the water as soon as possible. You go into this vertical posture. You start climbing the ladder or pawing with your hands to the side, and get submerged very quickly." Benjamin advised that much as people can't put on seatbelts in the middle of a car crash, one also should not expect to put on a lifejacket in the middle of an emergency in the water. Chicago fire officials said people should wear water flotation gear when they go on a personal flotation device or any boat in the water, even if they are close to the shore. - Lake Michigan
