Sunseeker 28 Metre review: First look at the luxury yacht – from the archive

The pattern of Sunseeker’s new model evolution reminds me of an Olympic long jumper – a series of short steps followed by the occasional giant leap. From the moment I clap eyes on the new Sunseeker 28 Metre taking shape at the company’s factory in Poole, it is clear that this is one of those big leaps.

Due to be unveiled at January’s 2013 London Boat Show, it marks a step change in the look and feel of Sunseeker’s larger craft that will soon be filtering up and down the range.

The fact that it sits squarely at the junction between the top of Sunseeker’s current Yacht range and the bottom of its Metre class of superyachts is no coincidence. It was precisely this desire to bring superyacht features within the reach of existing Yacht owners that kick-started the creative process.

Chris Warde from Sunseeker superyacht sales says: “Feedback from 88 Yacht customers was clear – they not only wanted big-boat features like folding balconies, deep bulwarks and foredeck seating but a more imposing appearance too.”

That task fell to Sunseeker’s design director, Ewen Foster, whose brief was to create an entirely new look that combined the volume and substance of the Yacht range with the dynamism and appeal of the Predator range.

The answer lay in creating a form that matched the function. The three key design innovations, which immediately distinguish the 28 Metre from its siblings, are the unusual swooping sheerline, the contrasting black pilothouse and a swathe of vertical windows wrapping around the aft section of the superstructure.

Like most great designs, all three of these ideas were inspired as much by their functional benefits as the desire to create a distinctive new look.

Foredeck seating and sunpads are sheltered from prying eyes and sea breezes

“The swooping Coke bottle sheerline is a nod to a more classic Sunseeker look,” says Foster. “But we also needed higher foredeck bulwarks to protect the sunbeds at the bow and create extra headroom in the VIP cabin below.”

When he puts it like that, it sounds strangely mundane and yet the effect it has is anything but. From the outside the huge raised bow gives the Sunseeker 28 Metre the kind of presence usually reserved for worldcircling explorer yachts, while on board the waist-high bulwarks with their chunky 8in wide cappings and stainless steel guardrails feel more like those you’d find on the side decks of a megayacht.

Intriguingly the cappings and all the outside decks spaces are not laid with real teak planking but Esthec, a new type of man-made decking that has the texture and feel of wood but with more modern looks and much lower maintenance requirements. “There will always be some traditionalists who prefer real wood,” admits Warde. “But we felt that Esthec’s environmental and maintenance credentials were well suited to a forward-looking yacht such as this.”

Innovative designs for the Sunseeker 28 Metre

The shiny black forward section of the superstructure moulding is also inspired by its functionality, namely the desire to reduce the overall build weight and centre of gravity by using modern lightweight materials such as carbon fibre. “We pride ourselves on pushing the boundaries of technology without jeopardising the quality or reliability of our craft,” confirms Warde.

Although carbon fibre is used to mould the flybridge hardtop, much of the deckhead and many of the structural elements, the pilothouse coachroof is in fact a conventional GRP moulding that has been covered in a glossy black 3M vinyl with the chequered appearance of woven carbon fibre. It may be an optical illusion but it works, reducing the visual bulk of the superstructure and imbuing it with a more sophisticated technical appearance.

However, the most spectacular of the three major design innovations on the Sunseeker 28 Metre, and the one that is likely to draw admiring glances from customers and rival designers alike, is the bold sweep of glass that encircles the aft end of the saloon.

The trend for ever larger saloon windows is nothing new but this is the first time we’ve seen an unbroken run of vertical windows, stretching from amidships to amidships around the stern without a mullion or pillar to interrupt the exterior styling. The effect from inside the saloon is even more startling. Despite its unfinished state at the time of our visit, the open plan living area felt more like a penthouse in one of those ultra-modern glazed apartment blocks than the saloon of a planing sportsyacht.

Gone are the slashes of glass and GRP that have dominated the looks of almost every large flybridge yacht for the last 20 years, to be replaced with huge 2m x 1.1m rectangular panes of flat reinforced glass butted up against each other. Even the normal structural aft mullions, which yards typically use to support the flybridge above, as well as hide everything from air conditioning vents to cabling, have been replaced with curved sections of glass. As a result you can now enjoy an unbroken 270º view of your surroundings.

“Early on, we were attracted by the idea of creating a panoramic saloon,” says Foster. “On Med boats the saloon hardly gets used because guests prefer to be outside, so we wanted to add as much glass as possible to make it a more usable indoor-outdoor space.

“It was a challenge to have so much glass and still maintain sufficient strength in the structure. It also meant we’d need to give it a very different look so we decided to make the glass a key feature of the design with an unashamedly upright look.”

They achieved the necessary structural integrity by using a superstiff cockpit door frame that can withstand over 6 tonnes of compression and two deep but slender girders each side of it, which support the flybridge structure but barely interrupt the sightlines from the saloon.

To make the most of this goldfish bowl effect the sideboard to starboard (complete with 55in pop-up television) and the two big sofas to port have been designed to sit just below the window line.

The freestanding dining table takes pride of place further forward so that it enjoys the full width of the opening side door and folding bulwark section. It’s not hard to imagine settling in here for the evening, looking out over the folded balcony as a thyme-scented Mediterranean breeze wafts down from the hillsides surrounding the bay.

The galley opposite can be hidden from view with a roller shutter or left open for guests to admire the chef at work. Of course if you prefer your meals truly alfresco there is still a choice of no less than three outside dining tables to pick from: the large U-shaped dinette in the cockpit, an even larger one up on the flybridge or the more private setting on the foredeck.

Sunseeker 28 Metre – Below decks

Down below the layout follows a similar pattern to the 88 Yacht but the extra volume of the 28 Metre’s hull and the multitude of oversized portholes (all of the four cabins have at least one) create an even more inviting experience. The master suite and the two guest cabins are accessed via a gently curving staircase in the saloon. Unlike the 88 Yacht, this doesn’t intrude into the master suite’s deckhead, so the bed now faces forward with a walk-in wardrobe to port and a lavish ensuite bathroom to starboard.

The VIP suite in the bows is almost a match for the master. The tapering beam means there isn’t quite as much floor space around the bed, and the walk-in wardrobe and ensuite bathroom aren’t quite so big, but the added privacy of a separate stairwell leading down from the bridge is a luxury that even the master suite can’t compete with.

Gratifyingly, the crew accommodation in the stern also receives a significant boost. The large transom window lets natural light flood into the mess area where crew can relax, cook, watch television or access the engineroom without disturbing the guests. A pair of twin bunk cabins either side with a bathroom and proper walk-in shower completes this surprisingly comfortable self-contained living space.

It does of course mean there is no covered tender garage but a large hydraulic bathing platform and a crane on the flybridge ensure there is still plenty of space to carry a mini-RIB and a PWC on board.

To complement the new exterior styling, the interior also breaks new ground with a move away from rectilinear furniture towards softer curves, colours and fabrics. There are 230 different fabrics to choose from, 28 leathers, ten lacquers, eight granites and marbles and three woods (oak, walnut and cherry), which can be finished in anything from 40-100% gloss varnish.

The choice could prove bewildering so Sunseeker have also come up with a series of 14 mood boards to show how the various colours mix and match. With names like Kiwi & Caviar and Truffle & Cointreau it sounds more like the menu in a new-wave bistro than custom yacht interiors but they should prevent any ill-advised colour combinations.

If this all sounds a bit too soft and cuddly for such a big boy’s toy, you’ll be relieved to hear that it’s very much business as usual in the engineroom. A pair of 1,925hp CAT C32s or 2,000hp MTU 12Vs on tunnel-mounted shafts give an estimated top speed of 29 knots.

Foster admits that the brief for the 28 Metre’s hull was to maximise cruising comfort and efficiency in the 20-25 knot range rather than all-out speed but assures us that it will retain Sunseeker’s usual handling characteristics. We certainly hope so. We’re all for embracing change when it comes to the 28 Metre’s looks but some things are better left untouched.

Creating a 28M Yacht, the Sunseeker designers have met those clients of the shipyard, which like the aggressive appearance of the Predator, but required a yacht with a large internal volume and deck spaces. The result is a real "man's" boat 28M Yacht with striking exterior, not just a house on the water, crammed with all sorts of trappings of the luxury life. Body type "deep V" provides a 28M Yacht stable ride on the wave, shallow draft (2,05 m) allows you to go into the waters with small depths and speeds of up to 30 knots — to quickly change the dislocation. In addition to all this the owner of the Sunseeker 28M Yacht will get designed interiors with high ceilings and natural light, plenty of open areas to relax on the decks and even the "side" balcony in the main salon. Residential deck is divided into two zones 3+1. Three cabins, including a master apartment is located in the middle of the body. Bow VIP cabin with a separate entrance can also be used as master. Filling the upper deck 28M Yacht will satisfy the most demanding customer. Sofas and table, bar with counter, two large sunbeds, a Jacuzzi and free space for deck or sports equipment — everything works on the idea of maximum comfort during cruises. In the aft is equipped with a compartment for the crew. Deck and ways of moving around the yacht is designed so that the crew could work, minimally intruding into private guest areas.

A next-generation carbon fiber canopy with a sunroof and a radar station shelters the front half of this yacht’s teak-lined flybridge, where you will find a forward sunpad, an L-shaped sofa and the upper helm station. Located amidship there is a curved, walk-in wetbar with granite counters, a frosted glass or teak serving platform, an outdoor Kenyon grill, a sink, fridge-freezer units and an icemaker, not to mention space for three custom-made barstools. On the port-side of the bridge there is a U-shaped dining sofa hugging an extending teak breakfast table, as well as a rear sunpad connected to a circular Jacuzzi spa-pool. At the rear of the flybridge there is room for a set of sun-loungers or space for a tender crane and dinghy storage.

One level down and you will discover a foredeck with a pair of two-seaters modular sunpads whose backrests adjoin a pair of curved loveseats. There is also a faux-Portuguese bridge sofa and a breakfast table out here, while generously proportioned side-decks lead to the sheltered aft-deck. The teak-lined aft-deck plays host to a transom dining sofa with a table and a wet-bar console, as well as side-steps down to a full-beam hydraulic swimming platform and a tender garage.

Curved sliding glass doors lead you into the main deck salon, where glossy walnut surfaces and teak-effect Esthec flooring match plush carpeting, stainless steel fixtures and double-height widescreen windows to create a refined and sophisticated atmosphere. There are a pair of side sofas, a bespoke coffee table, cabinetry, armchairs, room for a home entertainment system and a formal dining table for up to 8 guests, while sliding glass doors to the starboard side lead you out onto an extending cocktail terrace sculpted out of the bulwark. Also found on this level is an enclosed galley with granite work surfaces and Miele appliances, along with a wheelhouse hosting a cocoon-style forward lounge and a helm station equipped with Simrad or Raymarine touch-screen panels, Trac bow and stern thruster controls, power-assisted steering and leather-clad chairs.

On the lower-deck there is room for up to 8 overnight guests across an en-suite twin and an en-suite double stateroom located amidship, an en-suite VIP stateroom with a double bed nestled up toward the bow and a full-beam owner’s stateroom. The owner’s suite features panoramic side windows, a king-sized island bed, bedside cabinets, a side-sofa, a work-desk, a walk-in dressing room and a large, marble-clad bathroom with a waterfall shower. There are also crew quarters for up to 4 members of staff towards the rear with its own head, galley and dinette lounge.

Despite the sheer size of the Sunseeker 28M it can still reach top speeds of up to 29 knots with cruising speeds of around 21 knots. Engine options run from a pair of MTU 12V 2000MHP diesels, 1925MHP CAT C32s, MAN 3900PS motors or even Volvo Penta D13 shaft-drives. At the leisurely pace of 10 knots you can expect a globe-trotting range of around 1,200 nautical miles, while the 28M’s hull emphasizes balance and efficiency, and can also come fitted with a Trac digital fin stabilizer system.

Large custom yachts tend to be the stars of the yachting world, demanding attention with their grand proportions alone. But, as Stefano de Vivo, chief commercial officer of the Ferretti Group , points out: “It’s a lot harder to design a beautiful small yacht than a beautiful big yacht because the human being is always the same height.”

He’s right, of course. People need the same amount of space whether they are on a 50 metre or a 30 metre. The decks must have the same height, and stacking several of them on a 50 metre will certainly look more streamlined than on a shorter yacht. A true tri-deck of 30 metres is just asking to look chunky and top heavy.

Except for this one. The Ferretti Group has introduced an entry-level yacht for its Custom Line Navetta series that defies design logic. The Navetta 30 , at precisely 28.4 metres, has no half-deck raised pilothouse tucked between the main deck and flybridge. Instead, it incorporates a full upper deck – including bridge, indoor lounge and shaded al fresco dining for 10 – and tops it with a resort-like sundeck, yet the petite tri-deck looks long and lean. And its interior, by Milanese design firm Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel (ACPV) , is like no other. The Navetta 30 is the unicorn: a standout that doesn’t rely on grandiose dimensions.

Launched in October 2020, the 30 is the newest in Custom Line ’s Navetta range, replacing the older 28. It joins 33-, 37- and 42-metre models, all of which have been unveiled since 2016 to make up the new generation.

Navetta yachts prioritise space and comfort, so despite being the baby of the series the 30 needed ample height and volume. With a 7.3-metre beam encompassing 197 gross tonnes, it has 22 per cent more volume than its predecessor. Creating an agile and harmonious design within these measurements was, as exterior designer Filippo Salvetti says, “not a simple task”.

This was his first project with Custom Line, and he delivered sophisticated contemporary styling in keeping with the brand’s DNA before employing a few tricks. “By visually bringing the hull up to the upper deck and separating it from the gunwale using a sharp black horizontal line, it was possible to streamline the forms of the upper deck,” says Salvetti. The dark glass, he adds, is another design element that draws the eye horizontally, rather than vertically.

For the interiors the Ferretti Group also went in a new direction, turning to ACPV, world renowned for its architecture, urban design and product design. “To be honest it was a giant leap for us,” says Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi . “They are very demanding. They are used to working with the best.”

The initial idea, says de Vivo, was that ACPV would give a different perspective, one that was more villa and less marine, but the design firm had something else in mind. “They were the first ones to say, ‘Let’s not go too villa style; let’s keep something that really makes you understand you are on a boat.’ And I think they managed to mix the two things really well. The result is a beautiful interior that feels like a villa but doesn’t make you forget you are on a boat.”

Patricia Viel herself is no stranger to yachting; she owns a lake boat and indulges in sailing holidays around the world. “I’m passionate about everything that is floating,” she says. It didn’t take her long to understand the uniqueness of the Navetta 30. De Vivo describes it as “love at first sight” at the initial meeting.

“The Navetta 30 is very special, I have to say. It’s a tri-deck displacement boat in quite a small size, but really delivering a lot of spaces and different options,” says Viel. “And that was the main goal… providing interior design for a boat that has to be somehow reconfigurable by the customer.” Not only was she thinking about how it could be customised for different owners, but also about the flexibility needed for one owner. “For example, you have the freedom to create a dance floor on the main deck, or to collect all the tables that you have on board and compose a very, very long dining table because you want to have 20 people on board for a dinner party,” she adds.

Another area where the designers brought a new perspective was how they thought about the ambience on each deck. “In my view it’s a little bit annoying [when] you are changing the deck from above to below and you’re in a completely different environment,” says Viel. “You are somehow expected to change, to wear something different or to behave somehow differently. This is not our way of thinking for someone that is just navigating on vacation with friends, having fun and having beautiful moments everywhere on the boat.”

So instead of the typical formality of the main deck, conviviality of the upper deck and barefoot informality of the sundeck, “what we tried to do here is create one space all over with the same material range, with the same details and the same touch everywhere”, she says.

The decor they chose has a sporty flavour – Viel calls it a beach club style. Materials are natural, matt and very tactile. The wall covering in the saloons, for example, is fibreglass with tiny raised 3D-printed dots, and for continuity this same wallpaper is repeated on the lower deck.

As de Vivo points out, you never forget you are on a boat. The guest cabins feature deep blue lacquer accent walls that mimic the depths of the Mediterranean. The teak decks are carried into the interior spaces, and on the upper level the aft deck and saloon both have a warm teak overhead. A distinctively nautical feature is the rope balustrade that lines all the staircases inside and out, including the artistic spiral of carbon fibre and teak that climbs from the upper aft deck to the sundeck. Linking the motif to the furniture, the same rope is used on chair backs on both decks.

These chairs were custom designed for the project, of course, as were all the pieces on board except for sofas in the main and upper saloons that were designed by Antonio Citterio for Flexform and B&B Italia. Citterio’s furniture design melds beauty and functionality and is undeniably Italian; in fact his work has been credited with defining modern Italian style.

This casually stylish decor complements the high level of cruising comfort that characterises the Navetta line. Not for speed demons, these yachts are ideal for the owner who enjoys relaxed cruising. The Navetta 30 has four engine options and the package chosen for hull No 1 – 1,000hp MAN V8s – gives a top speed of 15 knots.

“We’ve seen basically that owners use [their yachts] 90 per cent of the time at 10 to 13 knots, so we’ve designed the hull to be much better performing at that range of speeds,” says de Vivo. The new-generation hulls have a finer entry at the bow that gives way to more rounded displacement features aft. Considering how much larger the 30 is than the previous 28 model, it’s amazing to learn that at 13 knots, the Navetta 30 burns 15 per cent less fuel than the 28. In addition to increasing efficiency and range, the hull shape keeps the yacht level, or neutrally trimmed, as it gains speed, which adds to the comfort.

Since height is the enemy of stability, and the 30 has the stature of longer yachts, a lot of work went into reducing weight aloft by using carbon fibre. In addition, the Navetta 30 offers both zero-speed stabiliser fins as standard and the option of a Seakeeper gyro. “When you activate both, the level of stabilisation is incredible,” says de Vivo. “Stability has become a very important part of yachting. We are working every day to make sure this aspect is improved.”

Another major factor affecting comfort is noise. The Ferretti Group technical department did extensive research into noise propagation sources for the new Navettas before applying their attenuation know-how from their larger yacht production.

Here again, the Navetta 30’s size proved to be a challenge. “When you are smaller, the engine room is closer, so it’s harder to obtain [good] results,” de Vivo points out. Yet the results are impressive: the owner’s cabin on the main deck registers just 44 decibels under way at 10 knots and 37 at anchor. It is comparable to a 50 metre, de Vivo says.

That’s clearly not the only thing on board this 30 metre that’s on a par with large yachts, thanks to the combination of the Ferretti Group engineering department’s R&D and the fresh thinking of Salvetti and ACPV. For example, note the “sunset lounge” in front of the bridge specified by the interior designers that blends so well into the profile created by Salvetti, or the floating glass bar that faces forward on the sundeck, just begging for guests to sit and enjoy an evening cruise.

“The way that the space has been [configured] for so many different ideas and moments of the day,” says de Vivo, “I’m pretty sure our owners are going to complain that you don’t get as much in the larger yachts.”

Because of good ownership, she has been kept up to date with some excellent refit and maintenance work. On Board Chantella

With 4 cabins onboard, Chantella is a perfect family yacht. She boasts 3 double cabins and 1 cabin with 2 single bunk beds. The salon provides a dining table that can seat up to 10 guests, along with a lounge and bar area. Moving outside, the table on the aft deck can be arranged so that 8 guests can be seated, with additional seating at the aft of the yacht. The sundeck provides a large area for lounging, having a BBQ with a dining table that seats 10 guests. There is ample sunbathing space, because of an extension to the sundeck. And if you get too hot and need a little protection, there is a bimini shade so that you can cool off in comfort and style.

Great spaces onboard for relaxing individually or as a group

On the foredeck in front of the bridge is where Captain Tristan says guests love to spend time whilst cruising, lounging on the large cushions here. When at anchor, and the toys are in the water, the foredeck opens up to provide another large space for guests to enjoy.

The 4 crew onboard know the boat very well and as a result, provide a great charter service for guests. Captain Tristan has been onboard for 6 years as Captain, having risen successfully through the ranks.

I chartered Chantella on a number of occasions over the last two years and intend to do so again in 2022. Her advantages are the very large open deck space with large parasol and bimini covering if it gets too hot, plus beautiful spacious mahogany Master and VIP cabins. There are three distinct dining spaces, shaded on both decks, and additionally including for eight inside, which doubles as a great meeting, or board room. Chantella has Stabilisers (rare on a vessel of this age and price), is quiet with highly economical new Volvo engines. And is operated by an extremely friendly, but professional crew. Ideal for family(ies) holiday, or business, Chantella sleeps eight and punches well above her weight. She is in good order and the crew are most attentive, very eager to please and enjoy a long association with the vessel. They are very familiar with the Western Mediterranean and manage the boat with skill. I shall be chartering her again and can thoroughly recommend her.

Cork Week 2024 aims for fun for all with big family day in Crosser along with the yachts

C rosshaven is aiming to host the biggest every Volvo Cork Week next month - and they want everybody to join in the fun by the harbour - even if they don't have a racing yacht in the drive.

The Royal Cork Yacht Club will host a full week of races and events involving boats from all over the world, from little dinghies to multi-million euro speed machines.

But along with the serious business of competition, with over 120 boats and 8,000 sailors coming from around the globe, there will be plenty of colour and excitement on shore, around the RCYC and the village of Crosser.

Volvo Cork Week 2024 (15th-19th July) will see a packed schedule of onshore events, including live music, local cuisine, a Family Fun Day, and Ladies' Day.

Racing will be spread across various challenging courses over the 5 days, offering competitors new challenges and opportunities each day, from longer coastal courses raced offshore, to ‘Round-the-Cans’ racing inside the harbour and multiple short races and Olympic courses laid in the open waters. The event will host the 1720 European Championships which will include over 30 1720 Sports boats designed in Cork, and there is a great charter opportunity this year with a fleet of RS21’s participating.

This year’s Beaufort Cup will be the biggest one yet, with entries from around the world including USA and Ecuador. The renowned race for international uniformed service personnel encompasses a race around Fastnet Rock and back to Cork.

Recommended viewing points for the Harbour Race taking place on Wednesday 17th July include Camden and Church Bay in Crosshaven, the new Haulbowline Island Amenity Park, Ringaskddy and the promenade in Cobh.

The Family Day on July 14th from 12-5pm will feature a coastal market in the Royal Cork Yacht Club marquee, trails to Camden Fort Meagher, themed competitions and games, the famous Pipers Fun Fair and boat trips from Hugh Coveney Pier on the Cailin Or.

As the boats are moored and sailors are back on dry land, the fun will continue at the Royal Cork Yacht Club, with musical entertainment all week, a ‘Pure Cork’ Crew night on Thursday 18th, fun on-shore sailing activities, and an expanded family-friendly area which includes a Play Zone for children’s games, a picnic area, and multiple casual dining options, alongside retail outlets, spares, sail-repair and other facilities.

The emphasis this year is on sustainability with a focus on conservation, reuse and recycling and environmental impacts. Sponsor Volvo Car Ireland will be on hand to showcase their range of fully electric & plug-in hybrid cars.

And don't miss the Volvo Cork Week Ladies' Day charity lunch on July 17th, in support of the Crosshaven RNLI, featuring special guests Volvo ambassadors Dermot Bannon and Suzie McAdam. A fabulous afternoon for a great cause is guaranteed.
