Larchmont Yacht Club

When the Larchmont Yacht Club was founded in 1880, the United States had been a nation for 104 years – its total population 50 million. The village of New Rochelle was settled in 1688; Mamaroneck, as part of Rye, had also long been existence; but in between these two, there was no Larchmont.

Stories from Larchmont Yacht Club

In the early evening of Memorial Day 1880, five young men were warming themselves over a bonfire built in a cleft of rocks on the shore of what is now Horseshoe Harbor, in Larchmont Manor. These five loved boats and they had just finished a hard day of racing. Their boats were part of a small mixed fleet of jib and mainsail sandbaggers, sloops and cat boats moored in Horseshoe Harbor. Since a bonfire is scarcely the most comfortable way to close a hard day at sea, it is not surprising that these young men fell to discussing the possibility of organizing a yacht club.

That evening, it was decided: they would organize a yacht club to be called the Larchmont Yacht Club and invite others to join. The problem of a Clubhouse was resolved quickly: Fred Flint was elected a committee of one to approach his father, T.J.S. Flint, who was President of the Larchmont Manor Company and owned most of the property in Larchmont Manor from the Post Road south to the shoreline. On this property was the small Union Church. The young charter members made a deal with the elder Mr. Flint for the use of the church as a clubhouse and signed a lease for $1.00 per annum. However, it was made clear that the newly formed Club would have use of the church every day except Sunday – when the clubhouse would be opened to them only after church services were over.

The club membership grew so fast, however, that a larger clubhouse was soon needed, and in the fall of 1881 the club leased the Fleming residence near the church for the annual rental of $1,500 per year. The club continued to expand so it became necessary in 1884, to lease the Shepard House. Three years later, in 1887, the year of the incorporation of the Larchmont Yacht Club, the present site of eleven acres was purchased at a cost of $10,000 from Benjamin A. Carver, a railroad magnate. The original Carver residence was much smaller than the present clubhouse – the east and west wings having been added subsequently to the purchase. The Pandemonium was built fifteen years later in 1902; the Junior Clubhouse was the Carver stable, and the basement was the cow barn while the first floor housed the horses.

Classic Sailboats

The Larchmont O’s

Thirty- nine foot class sloops designed by William Gardner were met with great enthusiasm in the war years of 1917. Finer and more graceful than the NY 40’s, partly due to it’s intended use as a spirited racer in the calmer waters of the lower Sound.

VARUNA, the 1917 Larchmont Yacht Club’s flagship, was the second boat in a series of six. She was built for, the then Commodore of the club, James B. Ford of Rye, New York. Mr. Ford along with Edmund Fisk were instrumental in establishing this new class for the club, referred to as the “Larchmont O’s.

The first Larchmont O was launched in the Spring of the year 1917, along with three others. Her name was GEORGIA, and she was built for Charles Lane Poor, author of the 1937 Men Against the Rule: A Century of Progress in Yacht Design. Charles Lane Poor went on to explain the 1889 Seawanhaka Rule, which encouraged large spreads of sails for small yachts, but presumed it unpractical on larger designs…their presumptions were wrong!

Varuna

VARUNA was the first yacht fitted out with the innovative and controversial Marconi rig. The Marconi rig was named after Signor Guglielmo Marconi, born in Bologna in 1874, Italian scientist, gave the world wireless communication, was not a sailor, but when erecting the enormous poles to distribute his wireless transmissions, he erected a complicated system of shrouds and guys. VARUNA was skippered by Butler Whiting and she proved conclusively, for the first time, that the Marconi rig was the fastest. The Marconi rigs came out in force at the close of World War I, and owe their success and use to the Larchmont O VARUNA.

Of the six Larchmont O’s that were sponsored by the Larchmont yacht club, five were launched and commissioned by their owners. The lone 6th was built, but was not commissioned at first like the others, she sat for two years, she had not been commissioned and was waiting for a owner.

215427 “Georgia” – Charles Lane Poor (author of “Men Against the Rule”) – Gaff Rig – L1 xxxxxx “Varuna,” – James B. Ford of Rye, NY (Former Commodore of Larchmont Y C) – Marconi Rig – L2 215428 “Nimbus” – J.F. Feder and sailed by Edmund Fish in the Summer races – Gaff Rig – L-3 215496 “Grey Dawn” – Philip H. The Edlu Race is May 8

Courtesy of the Larchmont Yacht Club Mainsheet

After a pandemic-impacted season in 2020, the 2021 summer racing season will kick off with Larchmont Yacht Club’s traditional season opener, The Edlu Race, on Saturday, May 8. Following the off-cycle running of last year’s race in September, The Edlu returns to its early May schedule, where it has traditionally served as a classic tune-up race for the summer racing season.

The Edlu Race was named after LYC Commodore Rudolph Schaefer’s Sparkman & Stephens-designed 56-foot cutter. Edlu was launched in 1934 and three weeks later won the Bermuda Race, setting up a successful racing career. At 56 feet LOA and 47,000 pounds displacement, Edlu was a classic S&S design, built by Henry Nevins on City Island for $25,000 ($490,000 today). In 1938, Commodore Schaefer commissioned Edlu II , another S&S design, but this time a 68-foot yawl displacing 77k pounds. Edlu II had a colorful history including coastal patrol in World War II, while on loan to the U.S. Navy, and time as a training ship for Tabor Academy, before returning to LYC under the ownership of Commodore Dr. George Brooks for 51 years. In 2005, she was sold and restored, and currently campaigns as Blackwatch proudly flying a battle flag based on the Schaefer Beer logo.

This year will be the 66th running of The Edlu Race. The race was originally a 125-mile overnighter, but for the past several decades has been run as a 32-mile day race from the Larchmont breakwater to Eaton’s Neck and back. LYC boats have won the race 17 times in the 65 runnings, with the Steve and Andrew Weiss family holding the record with four wins in various Christopher Dragon s (1977, 1983, 1988 and 2015).

Edlu II, now Black Watch

Carina II , a 1955 Rhodes-designed 55-foot yawl, holds the record for most wins by a single boat with victories in 1957, 1963, and 1967. The winner of the first Edlu Race in 1956 was Walter Wheeler’s massive yawl Cotton Blossom IV , a 1926 William Fife 71-foot yawl, now a cutter named Hallowe’en, and the most recent running in 2020 was won by Larchmont’s own Tenebrae , William Ingraham’s J/124.

In recent years, The Edlu has become one of the most popular events on Western Long Island Sound. Although short enough to be completed in a few hours, it has elements of a true distance race. The emphasis is on strategy rather than boat handling, appealing to all sailors, both serious racers and more casual families who want to get out on the water for a fun day of sailing.

The Edlu will include ORC, PHRF, double-handed, one-design, and non-spinnaker classes, as well as a “Plus One Division” for shorthanded boats. In order to encourage the participation of occasional and first-time racers, The Edlu includes a non-spinnaker “Club Class” for boats that do not hold PHRF certificates. The Club Class will sail the Edlu’s 20-mile course under ratings assigned by the Race Committee. You don’t have to own a race boat to do the Edlu: in 2016, Jed Kelly won the 11-boat non-spinnaker class with Entropy , a classic ketch that weighs over ten tons. If you have a sailboat, you are encouraged to join the fleet!

Under the leadership of Regatta Chair Bud Heerde and Rear Commodore Chris Schoen, LYC is looking forward to a fun-filled 66th Edlu Distance Race to kick off a robust 2021 racing season. With 65 boats on the line last year, you are encouraged to join the fleet and help continue the storied history of this fabulous race.

You can register at YachtScoring.com . If you have any questions about The Edlu, email Bud Heerde at fhheerde@outlook.com . ■

Larchmont Yacht Club’s 124th Race Week Report & Results

July 25, 2022 by Sail1Design Editor Leave a Comment

If you don’t like the weather…just wait a while!

Yes, there was competitive racing throughout the week, but the weather was the major factor influencing the 124 th Larchmont Race Week.

The western end of Long Island Sound confirmed the reputation of being a light-air venue during the summer, but nobody expected the number of storms that would run west to east down the Sound during this 8-day period. “Going into this year’s Race Week, I thought the fact that we would run seven different circles for adult sailors and multiples for the juniors would be our biggest logistical challenge,” commented Steve Leicht, the Club’s Vice Commodore who, with Rear Commodore Chris Schoen, were the week’s co-chairs. “However, it was the unexpected heat wave and the resultant series of frequent, severe storms that ripped down the Sound that caused the greatest issues.”

Monday – Wednesday was designated Larchmont Junior Race Week with over 400 juniors sailing 420s, ILCA 6s and 4.7s, and Fevas. As soon as the sailors arrived at their starting areas, the weather forecaster notified LYC that severe storms were approaching. Again, with November over Hotel, the kids came in only to have the worst squall of the week hit with no return to racing that day. Fortunately, Tuesday was champagne sailing making up for Monday. However, Wednesday was a drifter, and the sailors never left the shore before November over Alpha signaled the end of their regatta. The anticipation was that Thursday’s Opti Day would go off without a hitch, only to have yet another series of fronts develop as the first race was underway. Only the white division, who started first, got scored.

As an aside in the reporting of racing, on the eve of the final weekend, LYC hosted a presentation of its five skippers who ended-up on the podium after the 2022 Newport-to-Bermuda Race. They shared stories of this historic race for LYC: Jason Carroll’s ARGO, Chris Sheehan’s WARRIOR WON, Andrew and Linda Weiss’ CHRISTOPHER DRAGON, Peter McWhinnie’s IN THEORY, and Chris Schoen’s PHANTOM.

The final weekend called for the later start on Saturday and Sunday the Around Execution Rocks Race, a mid-distance race, where all classes start at the same time sailing the same course. Fortunately for all, the Race Week concluded with 12-15 knots out of the east making the trip around Execution Lighthouse a day of sailing never to be forgotten.

Locher, Weiss, Aven Win Larchmont Yacht Club’s 69th Edlu Race

By Buttons Padin

Three long-time customers of McMichael Yacht Yards & Brokers took home the overall trophies: Kurt and Anne Locher’s J/42 Atalanta was awarded The Edlu Trophy for winning the 39-boat PHRF division and Andrew and Linda Weiss’s Italia 11.98 Christopher Dragon was presented The Nyala Trophy for topping the 11-boat ORC division. Todd Aven’s J/99 won the Double Handed division.

The 2024 edition of the Larchmont Yacht Club’s annual distance race, the 32-mile Edlu Race, saw 46 boats crossing the line ranging from flat-out ORC racers to PHRF club racers, J/88s sailing as one-designs, and double handers. With a nearly east/west racetrack, the sailors started their first leg with the wind on the nose against a foul current. The easterly wind was predicted to be in the 8-knot range, then die only to fill in again from the south for an upwind return leg with the current having turned against the sailors by then. As it turned out, the wind at the start was a few knots above forecast as the boats split to the Connecticut and Long Island shores to beat out to the Eaton’s Neck turning mark.

Halfway down the outbound leg, the wind had clocked to 125 o and then 135 o degrees with boats lifting up on starboard to fetch the mark. The bigger boats rounded Eaton’s around 1300 with 11 knots of breeze from the 150 o direction allowing them to sail a downwind rhumb line course back to the finish. They knew there would be a shift as they all waited for the southerly to fill in bringing with it new wind conditions. Two thirds of the way back, the wind fell to 2 knots for a short period before the southerly filled in as forecast with 12+ knots of pressure. Chutes were doused and it was a close, port tack fetch back to the finish line off the Larchmont breakwater. Spectators in nearby high-rises were treated to a show as the fleet approached the finish like an armada.

In the end, it was two boats from the host Club taking two of the top prizes. Kurt and Anne Locher’s J/42 Atalanta won the 31-boat PHRF fleet beating Macre Sykes’s (Riverside Yacht Club) J/125 Good News in second by over seven minutes on corrected time – Sykes also won the Black Watch Trophy for best elapsed time. For their performance, the Lochers received The Edlu Trophy. Atalanta is a vintage J/42 that the Lochers upgraded significantly with the help of McMichael including the addition to a permanent prow, general boat upgrades, and this past winter, having new genoa leads installed.

In the keenly competitive, 11-boat ORC division, Andrew and Linda Weiss’s Italia 11.98 Christopher Dragon took top honors and The Nyala Trophy beating David Fass’s (Beach Point Yacht Club/NYYC) Swan 42 Zammermoos by less than a minute in a closely fought contest. As LYC’s Rear Commodore, Weiss took particular pride in this win noting, “I’ve raced in The Edlu for many years and even won it a few times; but it’s not the straightforward out-and-back race it would appear to be. I spent a lot of time talking with Butch Ulmer about The Edlu and the complexities it can present. It was a challenge getting to Eaton’s in a good position given the shifty winds and having been well down the return leg before the southerly filled in. One thing that made the difference for use was, as the wind was dying before the southerly filled-in, we saw breeze filling-in on the Long Island shore as everyone else was peeling off to Connecticut. We dropped our spinnaker and actually sailed away from the finish under jib to get into the new wind first. That one move made the race for us against bigger, faster boats that were ahead of us. Also, winning ORC as a Flag Officer of the host Club made this win special.”

This is the 13 th Christopher Dragon and the Weiss family has been a loyal McMichael customer for two generations.

At the top of the 9-boat PHRF Double Handed division were Todd Aven and Gerad Girstl aboard the J/99 Thin Man. The duo was in the same waters as Dragon and saw the same new breeze on the LI shore and, changing course to catch it first, sailed the southerly in for the win. In fact, the top three boats in the DH division were McMichael customers: Michael Kohler’s new J/99 and Jon Yoder and Bill Gassman on the J/100 Blackcomb.

Cameron Campbell Cameron has been boating his entire life, starting as a toddler on Great South Bay on Long Island. He grew up in Connecticut and spent every summer on Long Island Sound. In college he was a member of the University of Rhode Island Sailing Team and also ran operations at the URI Waterfront Center. After college he was an ASA Sailing Instructor at the New York Sailing School on City Island and then for Olympic Circle Sailing on San Francisco Bay. He participated in many regattas on both coasts in both small and large boats. He owned a Sabre for many years which he cruised from Annapolis to Maine. Cameron also has experience with power boats ranging from center consoles though larger cruisers.

Cameron has been working with clients preparing for Bermuda races, extensive blue water cruising, and many that are new to boating.

Rick Fleig Rick grew up on Long Island spending many years sailing on the Sound in everything from J/22′s to J/105′s, Custom C&C 41′s and many other boats, competing in all the major Northeast events. This experience and passion for sailing led him on a path to sail in the 1987 America’s Cup in Perth, Australia with both the Courageous and USA Syndicates. He has sailed in many major international regattas, including the Swan World Championships in Sardinia, the World 6 Meter Championships in Portofino, Italy, and several Newport Bermuda races.

Rick combines his extensive sailing background with both the marine and sports industry, having worked as a regional sales manager at SunfishLaser and Vanguard Sailboats, and prior to that as a regional sales representative with sporting goods giant Nike. He believes that building relationships and understanding the clients’ needs are essential in helping customers have a great experience with their boats. He works out of the McMichael Yacht Broker’s Newport office at the Newport Shipyard.

Rick resides in Portsmouth, RI, with his family, having fallen in love with the Newport area during his many sailing events there. He recently retired as the director/coach of the Portsmouth High School Sailing Team after many years, and along with his wife, Carline, now enjoys his time proudly following their youngest son, Tyler, who just finished his second year at the US Naval Academy. Tyler is a very accomplished sailor himself, and a member of the nationally ranked USNA dinghy sailing team. Rick is a member of Sail Newport and can be seen racing many weeknights and weekends in all the local events in a variety of boats.

Michael Beers Michael is a licensed captain and active racer who began his sailing career in Boston on the Charles River. As someone who did not grow up sailing, he especially enjoys introducing new boaters to the sport. Michael has a proven track record of working tirelessly for his clients, and enjoys working directly with buyers to identify the best possible “next boat” from the many options available. He is an active racer, recently racing in the J/70 fleet at Quantum Key West Race Week and aboard the J/130 Dragonly in the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race.

Prior to joining McMichael in 2007, he captained the 80′ schooner Adirondack II in Newport, RI and was an instructor at Offshore Sailing. In his free time, he enjoys cruising his Sabre.

Todd Williams Todd started sailing on his family’s cruising boat before his memory serves. His love of racing was cultivated through sailing Blue Jays and Lasers in Pequot Yacht Club’s junior program.  Since then he has actively raced in the J105 fleet, J109 fleet, and helped form the J122 class. He also developed and helped launch the LIS IRC 35 class.  Todd is an experienced distance sailor and was involved with winning the Vineyard race class and IRC overall aboard the J122 Partnership.

Todd enjoys using his extensive knowledge of boating to find his clients the boat that best suits their needs.  He is dedicated to providing the best possible service to all his customers.  Todd can often be found racing with clients and helping them build their racing programs. Through the years, he has custom built many J/Boats, Alerions, and MJM power boats for clients, many of whom he now considers personal friends.

During the winter season you may spot the Williams family on the slopes at Okemo where they have a ski house.

Andy Kaplan Starting October 4, Andrew (Andy) Kaplan has joined the brokerage team at McMichael Yacht Yards & Brokers. The addition increases the McMichael roster to seven full-time yacht brokers serving customers up and down the east coast with a concentration on the Long Island Sound and Narragansett Bay. He will work primarily out of the McMichael Mamaroneck, NY, office as well as Martha’s Vineyard.

“Andy is bringing to McMichael a lifetime of experience in sail and power boating with a keen focus in the sailboat racing world,” said McMichael President Steve Leicht. “His broad familiarity with offshore and one-design sailboats combined with his powerboating experience makes him an ideal addition to our brokerage team.”

Kaplan spent the majority of his career in finance including helping create the Quattro Global Capital, LLC where he was a principal and head of operation and marketing. “I believe that my financial sales and management experience is a great asset as I transition to yacht brokerage,” noted Kaplan. “While they are different industries, to succeed in either you need similar disciplines when matching buyers with the right product. That’s what creates and maintains long term customer relationships.”

Kaplan grew-up in Mamaroneck and has been a member of the Larchmont Yacht Club for over 30 years where he has been active in the Club’s leadership. He lives in New Rochelle, NY, and on Martha’s Vineyard, MA.

Attended two multi day Regattas at Larchmont. The staff were very respectful and helpful, even though they knew that I was not a member. I had an issue with a lost rain jacket and they had a very well designed lost and found system which resulted in the retrieval of my jacket. BTW is you need a high quality foul weather jacket, there are several that are unclaimed. Had numerous meals there from grab and go lunches, continental breakfasts and social dinner buffets. One day the coffee was so good, I thought they had put cocaine in it. The next day it had grounds. Stayed in Commodore suite for three days. The room was small with twin beds. The bathroom doors did not close. The view of Long Island Sound did compensate and I felt the price was fair for the location. My only complaint if continental breakfast was that hot pots should have been primed. They had a couple of different models and it took a minute to figure how to pump and then the next day my beverage of choice would be in a different style pot. Too early in morning to be doing trouble shooting in an un caffeinated state. They will not sell Larchmont Yacht Club branded merchandise to non members. That is their prerogative. I have plenty of LYC SWAG from regattas. The boat staff are very professional and respectful. Being in a regatta on LYC and American Yacht Club loaned boats, I was looking at every minor deficiency to win in One Design Racing. They were supportive where possible and within the Regatta sailing instructions.

Classic, elegant yet beautiful overlooking the Long Island Sound. I attended a wedding reception held here nearly a decade ago with my former love and his family. The service is somewhat attentive as well as the food is catered. Sunday brunch wearing Gucci and Burberry bags with Manolo Blahnik shoes complete with Tiffany jewelry of men and women, which envisioning it is very common yet a staple to old money to this historic yacht club. The view is amazing as well as the surrounding houses. The lawn is always freshly cut and well maintained. This yacht club is historic as members obviously come from old money. There is an elephant shaped plant on their lawn that is picturesque. I rate it four stars as the service and food are not superb.

Easy going Yacht club on the Long Island Sound. Interior is clapboard paneled and there are wood tables to have lunch at. Plenty of boat-themed paraphernalia hanging from walls. Staff quizzical: underage, they have no answers! Parking is tight. Magnificent views from front lawn over shimmering water. Rebel: 4

Attended a rehearsal dinner here recently. The building is gorgeous and very nicely inside...even the bathroom was beautiful! The cocktail hour was very nice with lots of appetizers being passed around and plenty of cheese, crackers, and drinks. The staff was friendly and attentive. The seated dinner was nice. I had the chicken francese which was really good and the portion sizes were great. I loved the view from the dining room and only wish we could have seen it during daytime so I could've gotten an even better view of the water!

Rude employees! The tennis courts and tennis shop were so disorganized. The manager of the tennis facilities did not accommodate me and my needs at all. Will not come back here again!

Classy, Elegant, and Breathtakingly beautiful! My boyfriend's company has a company/family picnic here once a year and this year I decided to attend his company picnic with him since I've never been to any of his company functions. This place is massive with lots of grass area for little kids to run around and others to take a nice stroll. There's a gorgeous view overlooking Long Island. The staff here are very friendly and kind. There was lots of of food - such as lobster with butter, pasta salad, burgers, hot dogs, salad, dessert, ice cream, and open bar. The lobster was so moist, tender, and just amazing! I had two for myself. The pasta salad we had was delish as well! I really enjoyed the picnic and it was nice to meet his colleagues and it was a nice escape from the city for a few hours. I look forward to his company function next year at Larchmont Yacht Club.

We had a luncheon there following my grandmother's funeral two days ago. My aunt and uncle are members there and it was a very nice, yet emotional time with my family. Honestly, I have no idea how much I can put in this review without losing it. This place is absolutely beautiful and has so much history. It's been around for over 200 years and this place IS old money. The staff was extraordinary and the food was quite pleasing. My mom has told me stories about how her proms were here. She is a real-life Lorelai Gilmore, rebelling against her debutante destiny and posh upbringing. Maybe I should fill in the fact that I'm adopted and that is how my connection to this place lies. Anyway, the view from the dining room is amazing. Overlooking the Long Island sound and just thinking of the really nice homes surrounding this place. I guess I really like it here. Quiet, peaceful and I'm sure that I would most likely get mistaken for staff here too. I left off the fifth star because even though I have a connection with this place...I will never be a member here. I'm too dark; too poor... don't mind me...I'm not myself right now...

This place is so classic and old school. Everyone has money oozing from their veins. Perfect place for Sunday brunch overlooking the water, wearing Lilly Pulitzer, and storing your expensive sailboat. I still give it 5 stars since it has a great history and sometimes it's the perfect place for traveling back in time. Also the "ladies' powder room" is nicer than my house.
