little traverse yacht club ugotta regatta

Sailboats from across the U.S. head to Harbor Springs each summer for one of the nation’s best-known sailing traditions: the LTYC “Ugotta” Regatta. Hosted by the Little Traverse Yacht Club,  the Ugotta brings some of the best sailboat racers in the country to sail in one of the world’s best sailing venues in Little Traverse Bay. The Ugotta Regatta takes place annually the weekend following the second of the Mackinac Races (Port Huron-Mackinac, Chicago-Mackinac). This year we are celebrating the 60th running of the LTYC Regatta!

LTYC’s Ugotta Regatta is open to all boats 22ft and above so come join us: registration is first come, first served. The racing begins with one-design fleet racing on Friday followed by one-design and tour-of-the-bay courses on Saturday and Sunday.

The weekend’s festivities kick off bright and early Friday morning with a fun tradition: a line of happy people outside Irish Boat Shop waiting to purchase the coveted Ugotta Regatta t-shirt. Each year, the shirt design changes!

New this year is a pre-race party to benefit junior sailing at the American Legion Hall. Friday night finds a Welcome to Harbor Springs celebration at the Irish Boat Shop. LTYC hosts parties at the Yacht Club both Saturday and Sunday afternoon for Regatta participants. The awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon is not to be missed!

The Ugotta Regatta brings to Harbor Springs hundreds of crew members and their families from across the midwest—and beyond. Race watchers either head out onto the water in power boats or watch from the Petoskey State Park or Petoskey’s Sunset Park.

Ugotta Regatta Brings in Sailors from Around the Country

The Ugotta Regatta in Harbor Springs, hosted by the Little Traverse Yacht Club, missed out last year due to COVID-19 concerns but it’s back and gathering a lot of spectators.

“Last year was supposed to be the 60th anniversary and unfortunately we had a COVID incident at the club,” said Tom Trautman, commodore of the Little Traverse Yacht Club. “One of our employees came down with COVID literally three days before the event was supposed to happen.”

Throughout the weekend there will be many races and people have come from around the country to participate. “Texas, Ohio, Illinois, South Carolina, Connecticut, Georgia, Missouri, and as far away as California,” said Trautman. “A lot of people that travel into town as well as some of the local sailors that compete in the Regatta this weekend.”

Since it’s conception, the event has grown every year. “It was a pretty small Reggata originally and it certainly has grown through the years to being one of the most prestige yacht races in the Great Lakes,” said Trautman.

Executive director of the Harbor Springs Chamber of Commerce, Bonnie Kulp said the Ugotta Regatta also gives a huge boost to the local economy. “It means tons for our businesses,” she said. “Everything is full from the hotels, the restaurants are busy, the shops. It’s just a really fun and exciting feeling and it just trickles over into everything.”

The event will run through Sunday with many more races to come.

Look to the water: Ugotta Regatta kicks off today on Little Traverse Bay

little traverse yacht club ugotta regatta

HARBOR SPRINGS — Sailboats from across the country have descended upon Harbor Springs and take to the water today for the 61st annual Ugotta Regatta on Little Traverse Bay.

The sailboat race — put on by the local Little Traverse Yacht Club — always takes place the weekend following the second of the Mackinac races and is slated to have upwards of 94 sailboats on the bay this year.

"We did of course cancel in 2020 and limited our on-shore offerings last year but this year we are pretty much back to 'normal' with everything and are excited for it all," said yacht club commodore Tom Trautman.

Trautman confirmed that the race will see over 90 boats on the bay from around the country and that about a third of them are local racers who will all take to the water around noon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

"Basically boats will head out with racing scheduled to begin at noon all three days," he said.

"Some racers are pretty serious about it but it's a pretty casual affair though. It's really a great opportunity for a lot of these folks to come to Harbor and Little Traverse Bay for a more relaxing weekend on the water."

The Ugotta Regatta is open to all boats 22 feet and above and registration is first come, first served. The racing begins with one-design fleet racing on Friday followed by one-design and tour-of-the-bay courses on Saturday and Sunday.

Trautman added that while it is a relaxing weekend for many, the race couldn't happen without some 50 on-water and 80 on-land volunteers that help make it possible.

"Without them it wouldn't be possible. It takes a village and without them, and our wonderful sponsors this year, it would be hard to pull off," he said.

"We are really looking forward to it and it's looking like it'll be a beautiful weekend."

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.
