MSC Virtuosa: Cabins and Suites Guide (2024)

MSC Virtuosa Cabins & Suites Guide

Choosing a cabin or suite on a cruise ship is never easy!

When it comes to MSC Virtuosa there is a choice between seventeen different cabins and suites to choose from between 2,421 cabins (including 60 dedicated for guests with disabilities or reduced mobility).

In this guide, I have sourced all the information from my experience onboard MSC Virtuosa and MSC Cruises to bring you an easy-to-understand guide on the available cabins and suites.

Introduction

MSC Virtuosa is one of MSC Cruises’ latest ships – the Meraviglia-Plus class ship can carry a maximum capacity of 6,334 passengers – but this number is calculated based on every available berth on the ship being occupied (i.e. all bunk beds, sofa beds, etc) – this is rarely the case on any cruise ship!

All passenger cabins on MSC Virtuosa are located on Decks 5 and 8-16. Please remember that all photos and illustrations represent what they look like – some may be the opposite way around or laid out differently! Generally speaking though, they are all identical across the grades.

MSC Virtuosa ‘s accommodation works based on five different cabin types – which are then broken down into further sub-categories of cabins, but in essence, there are five types to choose from:

  • MSC Yacht Club

I will explain all the other types – but feel free just to select one and skip to it!

How many cabins are on MSC Virtuosa?

There are 2,421 cabins on MSC Virtuosa . They are configured as follows:

  • 15 Interior Studio Cabins
  • 728 Interior Cabins
  • 160 Ocean View Cabins
  • 1,322 Balcony Cabins
  • 8 Suites with whirlpool baths
  • 2 Grand Suites with whirlpool baths
  • 15 MSC Yacht Club Interior Suites
  • 77 MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Suites
  • 8 MSC Yacht Club Duplex Suites
  • 2 MSC Yacht Club Royal Suites
  • 59 Cabins for guests with disabilities or reduced mobility
  • 1 MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Suite for guests with disabilities or reduced mobility

Cabins by Description and Type

First, lets look at the cabin descriptions (as described on the MSC Cruises website and brochures) and what type of cabins they actually are.

You’ll see that they match standard cruise ship cabins, just slightly different naming. For example an ‘inside cabin’ is an ‘Interior Cabin’ with MSC Cruises.

Cabins by Size and Code

Now let us look at the sizing and coding.

Firstly, the sizing is made up of two parts (for the majority of cabins) – that is the floor space (including your bathroom) and the size of your balcony. Cabins without balconies have just one number listed.

The coding in the table relates to the grade of the cabin you have. There are multiple grades of the same cabin type (sounds confusing, I know!) but actually it is pretty straightforward.

For example, a Fantastica Deluxe Balcony comes in four grades:

  • BP – Partial View
  • BR1 – Cabins on decks 8-10
  • BR2 – Cabins on decks 11-12
  • BR3 – Cabins on decks 13-14

You’ll find the higher the number, the more expensive the grade is. Although usually it isn’t too much and is sometimes worth paying a little bit more for a better grade – as you may find more availability for your perfect location!

You’ll also find a Daily Planner delivered each day to your cabin that includes details of all activities on the ship and information on the port you are visiting.

Interior Cabins

Like on all cruise ships – interior cabins are the lowest grade of cabin – that doesn’t mean they are they are the worst though. For many, a cabin is just a place to get sleep and get ready and is perfect for any cruise – so let’s get started with more details about these cabins!

Studio Interior Cabin

The Studio Interior cabins are the smallest cabins available on the ship. This is because they are aimed at solo travellers! therefore they have a slightly reduced bed (140 x 200cm) compared to the other cabins on the ship.

MSC Virtuosa Studio Interior Cabin

  • Surface Area: Approx 12 sqm
  • Located: Decks 5-14
  • Number available: 16
  • Capacity: 1 Passenger

Deluxe Interior Cabin (IB/IR1/IR2)

The Deluxe Interior cabins are the standard inside cabins for two people and offer more space than the Studio Interior version.

MSC Virtuosa Deluxe Interior Cabin

  • Surface Area: 17 sqm
  • Number Available: 64+120
  • Capacity: 2-4 Passengers

Ocean View Cabins

MSC Cruises call the industry-standard ‘Outside’ cabins as ‘Ocean View’ which is a better name and makes more sense. In essence, it is a standard Interior cabin but with a large rectangle window – allowing in natural daylight and a view out to sea.

As standard with cabins of this category across all ships, the porthole will not open – you will need to circulate air via the air conditioning system.

Junior Ocean View with Obstructed View Cabin

The lowest category of Ocean View cabins are ones with obstructed views. This commonly means they are situated near/behind lifeboats and/or other ship equipment which is fixed to the side of the ship.

It is possible that this equipment may move during port days (i.e. window cleaning equipment) but it should be taken for granted that you will have an obstruction of some type from your view. This of course is reflected in the price too.

These cabins also offer a larger vanity desk area and a sofa bed, which can be converted into further berths if required.

MSC Virtuosa Junior Ocean View Cabin with obstructed view

  • Surface Area: 12 sqm
  • Located: Deck 8 only
  • Capacity: 2-6 Passengers

Junior Ocean View Cabin

These are the same as the previous type of cabin – but they offer no obstructed view and instead, you can see out to sea with ease!

MSC Virtuosa Junior Ocean View Cabin

Deluxe Ocean View Cabin

The Deluxe Ocean View Cabin offers more space than the Junior versions of this cabin type, allowing you some extra space – ideal if you are travelling with kids.

MSC Virtuosa Deluxe Ocean View Cabin

  • Surface Area: 16 sqm
  • Located: Deck 5 Only

Premium Ocean View Cabin

The highest category of this cabin type is the Premium Ocean View Cabin – it offers much more space and they are placed higher up on the ship, giving you a greater view out to sea.

MSC Virtuosa Premium Ocean View Cabin

  • Surface Area: 25 sqm
  • Located: Decks 9-11

Suggested reading:

Balcony cabins.

Breath in that sea air! A balcony cabin is a sure way of enjoying your cruise even more! The ability to have your own private outdoor space at all times can be wonderful on busier voyages or if you just really want a secluded hideaway with a good book!

Thankfully, MSC Virtuosa has a huge amount of cabins that have a balcony – in fact, over 70% of the ship are balcony cabins to choose from (and even more suites with balconies too!)

Studio Balcony Cabin (BS)

The ship offers a small number of solo passenger balcony cabins – rare for most ships, these are perfect for solo travellers or a single-family member travelling with a larger family.

MSC Virtuosa Studio Balcony Cabin

  • Balcony Area: 4 sqm
  • Located: Decks 13-14

Deluxe Balcony with Partial View Cabin (BP)

The partial-view cabins are ideal if you want the outside space to get some fresh air, but are not totally bothered about having a view. Partial view cabins are usually obstructed either by some machinery fitted externally to the ship, or, lifeboats (or a mixture of both) – they usually differ, so there isn’t a standard ‘partial view’ as such.

MSC Virtuosa Deluxe Balcony with Partial View Cabin

  • Balcony Area: 6-8 sqm
  • Location: Decks 8-14

Deluxe Balcony Cabin (BB/BR1/BR2/BR3)

This cabin is your ‘standard balcony cabin’ that most people will opt for (and the most numerous on the ship) – they are available across a number of decks and differ in price based on if you choose low, mid or high deck. Whichever you choose is down to personal preference – they are all the same size.

You will see some cabins listed as Bella Balcony or Fantastica Balcony – there is no difference in these other than position on the ship (and additional perks in the experience)

MSC Virtuosa Deluxe Balcony Cabin

Balcony Aurea Cabin (BA)

Like the previous category, these cabins offer a superb balcony with great sea views and are wonderful for watching the ship arrive or leave a port – or just hanging out on during a sea day!

This configuration of cabin doesn’t come with any other different physical features, but is often placed in better locations on the ship.

MSC Virtuosa Balcony Aurea Cabin

  • Location: Decks 11-13

For those who want extra room, perhaps travelling with a larger party or just want to splash out on something special, the suites on MSC Virtuosa should not be missed!

The suites range from extra space (in the suite and balcony) to duplex suites with terraces and some even come with their own private whirlpools!

Premium Suite Aurea

These suites are ideal for a family with kids or teenagers. The suite is larger than your standard balcony cabin and has a private area (curtained off) with a set of bunk beds – just opposite the bathroom. You’ll also find a larger balcony with some of these suites.

MSC Virtuosa Premium Suite Aurea (connecting cabin shown)

  • Balcony Area: 3-14 sqm
  • Location: Decks 9-14
  • Number Available: 24

Premium Suite Aurea with terrace and whirlpool

This version of the Premium Suite Aurea comes with its own larger balcony (or terrace as it is called) and are generally at the front of the ship, offering a curved frontage.

These suites come with their own lounge area with a sofa, table and chairs. Additionally, they have their own private whirlpool which is located outside offering views out to sea – could that sound any more amazing?!

MSC Virtuosa Premium Suite Aurea with terrace and whirlpool

  • Surface Area: 27 sqm
  • Balcony Area: 26-30 sqm
  • Location: Decks 9-13

Grand Suite Aurea with terrace and whirlpool

This is a bigger version of the previous suite!

Offering a much larger suite and a much larger balcony/terrace (with private whirlpool) you’ll find these suites only on one deck (12) but they are massive – ideal for longer cruises!

MSC Virtuosa Grand Suite Aurea with terrace and whirlpool

  • Surface Area: 39 sqm
  • Balcony Area: 36 sqm
  • Location: Deck 12

MSC Yacht Club Suites

At the very top end of MSC Virtuosa, there is the MSC Yacht Club. MSC Cruises describe this as a ‘ship within a ship’ and they are not wrong! Many passengers choose to sail in MSC Yacht Club and some rarely leave the area throughout most of the cruise.

MSC Yacht Club comes with a different set of benefits that other MSC Experiences offer (such as Bella, Fantastica or Aurea) and you’ll find you have access to your own private butler, 24/7 private concierge, Yacht Club bar, restaurant, buffet and outdoor grill area.

MSC Yacht Club is accessed by keycard only and limited to a number of passengers. Each of the exclusive 103 suites (there are no cabins!) is larger in size than others on the rest of the ship and ranges from an Interior Suite to the Royal Suites.

MSC Yacht Club Interior Suite (YCI)

The entry-level suite in MSC Yacht Club is the Interior Suite – this well-appointed suite offers you the luxury of an upgraded bathroom, vanity area and suite-only fixtures.

MSC Yacht Club Interior Suite

  • Location: Decks 14-16 (front of the ship only, within MSC Yacht Club)
  • Number Available: 15
  • Capacity: 2 Passengers

MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Suite (YC1)

The Deluxe Suite offers the same as the Interior Suite but has a balcony and a spacious sitting area with a sofa.

MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Suite

  • Surface Area: 29 sqm
  • Balcony Area: Approx 5 sqm
  • Location: Decks 14-18 (front of the ship only, within MSC Yacht Club)
  • Number Available: 78

MSC Yacht Club Duplex Suite with whirlpool (YCP)

Taking it up another level, there are suites within MSC Yacht Club that offer their own private whirlpool. These are similar to the suites that have a whirlpool in Aurea, however, they are duplex (split-level) – giving you much more room than most suites.

Downstairs they offer a private dining area and a separate bathroom (and wardrobe), with outside access to the private whirlpool.

MSC Yacht Club Duplex Suite with whirlpool

  • Surface Area: 59 sqm
  • Balcony Area: approx 23 sqm
  • Location: Decks 9-12
  • Number Available: 8

MSC Yacht Club Royal Suite (YC3)

The very best accommodation on the ship is a pair of Royal Suites within the MSC Yacht Club.

These exclusive suites allow you to live like a King (or Queen!) for the duration of your cruise and you won’t want to leave when you have stayed here. They offer the features of the whirlpool suite, however, everything is on one deck (rather than a duplex) and there is a larger balcony area.

MSC Yacht Club Royal Suite

  • Surface Area: 58 sqm
  • Balcony Area: 70 sqm
  • Location: Deck 15 only (within MSC Yacht Club)
  • Number Available: 2

MSC Virtuosa Family Cabins & Suites

These days, cruise ships cater much better to families than previously. You’ll find 190 different cabins and suites which are available to be booked together and offer an interconnecting door between them (and you’ll end up with an extra-wide balcony!)

  • Super Family: Combination of two connected balcony cabins – together can fit up to six people (three people in each)
  • Super Family Plus: Combination of two connected suites – together can fit up to twelve people (six people in each)

See the deck plan for the symbol for Connecting Staterooms and also the symbols for bunk beds.

These cabins usually go fairly quickly when bookings open – so make sure your reserve yours sooner than later.

Note: Cabins 13265, 13376, 14235 and 14278 have bunk beds only (for 3rd/4th passengers)

MSC Virtuosa Cabins Frequently Asked Questions

There are 2,421 cabins on the ship.

Are there kettles in cabins on MSC Virtuosa?

Yes. There are kettles in all cabins and suites when MSC Virtuosa is sailing from Southampton.

What decks are cabins on MSC Virtuosa?

Deck 5 and Decks 8-16.

What is the difference between a Bella or Fantastica Balcony cabin?

There is no difference other than location. The MSC experiences offer different onboard amenities.

Does MSC Virtuosa have a Yacht Club?

Yes. The MSC Yacht Club is located at the front of the ship between decks 14-19.

Can I bring food on an MSC Cruise?

You can’t bring food onto an MSC Cruises ship. You can bring some snacks during embarkation, but food, in general, is not permitted.

Can I bring alcohol on an MSC Cruise?

You can’t bring alcohol onto MSC Cruises ships.

Do you pay for shows on MSC Virtuosa?

No. The shows in the main theatre are free (you just need to prebook each day, but there are some walk-in seats available too). The ship has a second theatre called the Carousel Lounge that offers two paid-for shows throughout most cruises.

Final Thoughts

Choosing a cabin or suite on a cruise ship is probably the second hardest thing to do after picking your itinerary.

However, with the right information, you can be sure to pick the exact type of accommodation that suits you!

There is no right or wrong choice in picking a cabin; some people prefer inside cabins because they only sleep/get changed in them – and use the savings for other things on their cruise (or a longer cruise!).

Others prefer a balcony so they always have a view of where they are and have their own private outdoor space – but it is totally a personal preference on what you pick.

Thankfully, MSC Virtuosa has many choices available for all passengers!

MSC Virtuosa Cabin Guide – (Honest Reviews and Cabins to Avoid)

If you are taking a cruise on the MSC Virtuosa you may be wondering which cabin to choose.

The MSC Virtuosa has cabins identical to that found on Virtuosa’s sister ships MSC Meraviglia, MSC Bellissima and MSC Grandiosa. I’ve cruised in both an inside cabin and a balcony cabin on the MSC Meraviglia and have stayed in an inside cabin on the MSC Virtuosa.

The cabins on these ships are some of my personal favourites.

What Cabins Are Available on The MSC Virtuosa?

The MSC Virtuosa has a range of interior, oceanview, balcony, and suite cabins available. All cabins contain a private bathroom, hairdryer, and safe. The cabins on board the MSC Virtuosa range in size from 17 metres squared to 57 metres squared and are able to accommodate up to 6 guests.

Solo interiors are also available for passengers cruising alone.

Regardless of cabin category all cabins include:

  • Large Wardrobe, Additional Shelves.
  • A Minimum of One or Two Beds (Convertible, either a Queen or Two Twin Beds).
  • At Least One Chair (Balconies and Higher Also Have a Sofa).
  • Safe (Free to Use).
  • Minibar (Cost For Items).

What Are Interior Cabins on a Cruise?

An interior cabin is a cabin that is located on the inside of a cruise ship. Interior cabins don’t have windows or any outside space. Interior cabins are also called ‘inside’ cabins and they are usually the cheapest cabin grade available on a cruise.

The main reason why cruisers book inside cabins is because of the cheap price but some people also book them because they enjoy the darkness that is gained by not having any windows.

The inside cabin I stayed on onboard the MSC Meraviglia and Virtuosa was one of the largest inside cabins I’ve ever stayed in.

Things I loved about the inside cabin:

  • I had the BEST night’s sleep, it was so dark.
  • The cabin was spacious, with lots of floor space.
  • There was loads of storage, a huge wardrobe, and multiple other shelves.

Inside Solo Cabins – MSC Virtuosa

Mid Range

MSC do have a selection of cabins designed for solo cruisers, all are inside cabins.

Solo cruisers are often hit hard with ‘solo supplements’ when they cruise. This means that a solo person may have to pay double the price of a person sharing with another passenger.

When a cruise line has solo cabins this effect is often reduced.

Why Do Solo Cruisers Have To Pay a Solo Supplement?

When cruising solo cruisers will often have to pay a ‘solo supplement’. This means that they pay more to stay in the cabin alone than they would if they were sharing with another passenger.

This is not only to account for the lost revenue from not having another passenger in the cabin but also from losses in things like drink sales and casino spend.

When booking a solo cabin guests are given one price. This is usually more expensive than an inside cabin shared between two but is often cheaper than a solo cruiser having an inside cabin alone.

MSC Meraviglia Cabins Interior Solo

Inside Solo Cabins – Design – MSC Virtuosa

The design of the interior solo cabins is VERY similar to the standard inside cabins. The only difference is the slightly smaller size and the fact there is only one bed.

The bed is a large single.

The average size of a standard inside cabin is 15 metres squared. To learn more about the size of cruise ship cabins, and how the size of oceanview cabins compare to inside cabins, check out this post: How Big Are Cruise Ship Cabins? 27 Examples, All Cabin Types

Oceanview Cabins – MSC Virtuosa

An oceanview cabin is very similar to an inside cabin but the cabin also has a window. This could be a large picture window or a small circular window.

The windows in oceanview cabins cannot be opened.

15 Square Metres – 25 Square Metres
1
Mid Range

I rarely choose to stay in outside/oceanview cabins but have on occasion. If an oceanview cabin wasn’t much more expensive than an inside cabin I may consider it, but generally speaking, I’d upgrade to a balcony if I had extra money to spare.

The oceanview cabins are almost identical to the balcony cabins in size and layout. The only difference being the window instead of a balcony.

What Are Obstructed View Oceanview/Balcony Cabins?

Some oceanview and balcony cabins may have what is known as an ‘obstructed view’. An obstructed view simply means that there is something in the way of the window or balcony.

This could be a small piece of machinery below the balcony or to one side or it could mean that the cabins view is completely blocked.

The only way to get an obstructed view cabin is to specifically book an obstructed view cabin. When booking a ‘guaranteed’ cabin or any other cabin you will not be assigned an obstructed view.

An exception to this is if a guaranteed cabin is booked and the guest is upgraded.

A cruise line may place a guest who booked a ‘guaranteed’ inside cabin into an obstructed view balcony. To learn more about obstructed views, including why you should consider one, check out this post:

The Truth About Obstructed View Cabins – (Photo Examples & How to Find One)

Balcony Cabins – MSC Virtuosa

I love the balcony cabins on these ships. The design is clean, modern, and comfortable. The space is functional and although the floor space isn’t much bigger than cabins on other lines it does feel a lot bigger.

All cabins on the ship have similar stylings. The colours vary by deck so a cabin on deck 8 and deck 10 will have a different colour scheme.

There is also a variation on where the bed is placed, the bed can either be by the balcony or by the bathroom, each balcony cabin alternates between the two.

MSC Meraviglia Balcony Cabin Bed Deck 10 Sofa

How big is the balcony on MSC Virtuosa?

Based on my experience cruising on the MSC Meraviglia I’d say that the balcony isn’t huge but it isn’t small either. It is mid-range.

We were cruising with friends who were in the balcony next to us so we asked our cabin steward to remove the barrier between the two balconies, this gave us a huge balcony which was amazing. I’d definitely recommend this if you’re cruising with another cabin.

It’s worth noting that some balconies are bigger than others. We had the standard sized balcony although cabins on deck 8 have a bigger balcony.

The bigger balconies on deck 8 are partially restricted view, meaning you cannot see down to the ocean because there is a lifeboat in the way.

Our Balcony Cabin on Deck 10 (MSC Meraviglia):

Below is the video review that I filmed onboard the MSC Meraviglia. During the video, I talk a little about the cruise in general and about what it is like to cruise with MSC.

I love cruising with MSC but it is very different from cruising with an American or British line. It is important you do your research before cruising with MSC so you know what to expect.

Things I Loved About My Balcony Cabin:

  • The design. The cabin was modern and clean.
  • The cabin had a LOT of storage space. A big wardrobe and multiple other drawers.
  • The bed was really comfortable.

I’d usually write here about the things that I didn’t love, but honestly, I can’t think of any. I could happily live in this cabin. It is my favourite balcony cabin.

Suites – MSC Virtuosa

The MSC Virtuosa has a range of suites available for guests looking for something a little extra.

Some cabins are part of what is called the MSC Yacht Club. The MSC Yacht club is a ‘ship within a ship’. Guests who book cabins in the Yacht Club have access to all Yacht Club facilities. Yacht Club Facilities include:

  • Private Butler.
  • Access to Private Yacht Club Areas Such as a Pool and Bar.
  • A Yacht Club Dedicated Restaurant.
  • Complementary Thermal Suite Access.

All Yacht Club cabins are located together as shown below:

The below is a summary of the suites available.

MSC Virtuosa Cabins Frequently Asked Questions:

Do the cabins on the msc virtuosa have safes.

All cabins on the MSC Virtuosa have safes. The safes are modern, free to use, and quite large. On arrival guests will select a code for the safe, when disembarking the cruise the safe should be left empty and open ready for the next guest.

The safe will fit a table or small laptop, I managed to fit my MacBook air into the safe.

man using a safe

Which plug sockets are on the MSC Virtuosa?

In each cabin onboard the MSC Virtuosa there are two European plug sockets and one USB charging point.

Make sure you pack adapters! This is one of the most common things for first-time cruisers to forget. You can find my full list of cruise essentials on the page here Cruise Essentials.

Do The Cabins on The MSC Virtuosa have Irons?

None of the cabins on the MSC Virtuosa have irons. There aren’t any ‘free to use’ laundries on MSC ships so your only option is to pay to have your clothes laundered. You can learn more about MSC’s laundry services here: MSC Cruises Laundry Services: Packages, Price Lists, and Alternatives .

I tend to just hang my clothes up in the bathroom when I have a shower and the steam usually makes the creases drop out. It’s magic! There are various wrinkle-release sprays you can buy too.

MSC Laundry Self Service Package

Do The Cabins on The MSC Virtuosa have Hairdryers?

All cabins on the MSC Virtuosa have hairdryers. All hairdryers are new, powerful, and can be found in the desk of the cabin.

I wouldn’t recommend bringing your own hairdryer on the MSC Virtuosa as the hairdryer on board is strong.

Do The Cabins on The MSC Virtuosa have TVs?

All cabins onboard the MSC Virtuosa have TVs. Guests are also able to use the onboard TV to check their onboard account as well as watching multiple TV channels. The daily schedule it also available on the TV.

MSC also have a brilliant app which I would recommend you download before you cruise with them.  I filmed a video about how to use the app which you will find here: MSC for me.

MSC Virtuosa Cabins to Avoid

The following cabins to avoid were provided by guests who cruised on the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima or Grandiosa.

I personally believe that there are no ‘bad’ cabins on cruise ships. Each cruise ship cabin is built in the same way and it’s only the location that changes.

That said if you are somebody who is sensitive to noise, the below cabins may be cabins to avoid.

MSC Virtuosa – Cabins to Avoid, Deck 14

Cabins towards the back of deck 14 are under the buffet.

The following cabins towards the aft of deck 10 onboard MSC Virtuosa are directly below the buffet. Some cruisers staying in these cabins have reported noises of things like chairs being moved.

This shouldn’t be a big problem as the buffet isn’t open late into the night but it may be something to bear in mind.

msc virtuosa deck 14

MSC Virtuosa – Cabins to Avoid, Deck 5

Cabins towards the front of deck 5 are close to the theatre.

I have stayed in a similar location in the past and didn’t have any trouble but I was out during the evenings.

If you like to go to sleep early or are travelling with children these cabins may be ones to avoid.

Below are my personal recommendations for a cruise onboard the MSC Virtuosa. I have recently booked a cruise on the Virtuosa and booked an inside cabin as I am very much in the ‘budget cruiser’ category!

Review: How to upgrade your MSC Virtuosa cruise to the MSC Yacht Club

By Qin Xie | 15 Jul 2022

MSC Yacht Club service

MSC Yacht Club service. Picture: Luc Selvais

Is it worth upgrading to MSC Cruises’ high-end Yacht Club, one of the ship-within-a-ship areas adding a little more luxury to your cruise? We test out the concept on MSC Virtuosa

A jovial group of lads, dressed to impress and each with a cocktail in hand, stumbles out of the mirrored lift as I pile in with a handful of other guests. There’s an air of buzzy exhaustion as we collectively lean back against the glass while the elevator makes its swift and smooth ascent.

“Too much booze, and too much good food,” one guest quips as he rubs his stomach; we all chuckle knowingly. It’s true. After a whirlwind cruise on glitzy MSC Virtuosa – the 19-deck Meraviglia-Plus vessel with room for close to 6,000 guests – we’re a bit overwhelmed.

It’s just as well I’m ending the night with a quiet drink in the Top Sail Lounge. An oasis of calm away from the party atmosphere of the decks below, this low-key bar and lounge has plush armchairs and banquettes from which you can enjoy table service. There’s not much to see besides the other guests when I slip in for a negroni just after midnight, but the view during the day from its front-of-ship vantage point on deck 16 is pretty impressive.

What is it like in the Yacht Club on MSC Virtuosa?

Just a handful of people get that privilege though, as it’s open only to guests who are staying in the Yacht Club, MSC Cruises’ equivalent of first class. Described as a ship within a ship, the Yacht Club is designed to offer all the luxuries of a smaller vessel alongside the entertainment and facilities that you would expect to find only on larger ships.

There are just 95 cabins in a private section located at the front of the ship, between decks 14 and 18 (there’s no deck 17). Within this bubble there’s a separate lift, concierge station and three food and beverage venues for the exclusive use of Yacht Club guests.

Like first-class passengers on flights, there’s also priority boarding, 24-hour butler service, complimentary premium drinks, free internet access and discounts at the speciality restaurants and spa on board.

Food and drink on MSC Virtuosa

During my short sailing, the Top Sail Lounge was a favourite for pre and post-dinner drinks. Everything from Nicolas Feuillatte Brut champagne to Johnnie Walker Black Label came in generous measures and without the extra price tag of other bars on the ship.

The Swarovski crystal-studded staircase spiralling straight up to the MSC Yacht Club Restaurant on deck 18 adds to the effect, so you always arrive and leave in style. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all served à la carte at the Yacht Club Restaurant, with the daily-changing menu pitched to a fine-dining standard.

I enjoyed dishes such as stuffed tortellini with asparagus and mascarpone cheese, and charred sea bass fillet with crab and rocket salad, all with a glass of something delicious from the wine list. There’s one further exclusive spot for Yacht Club guests – the sun deck on deck 19.

Laid out like a beach club, there are dozens of loungers facing the ocean, flanked by a bar at the back. Drinks and light bites are always available up here, and you barely have to lift a finger to get service. Situated to one side, a small heated pool and whirlpool bath complete the picture, along with a handful of cabana-style loungers that are assigned to specific Yacht Club cabins for exclusive use.

What to do on board MSC Virtuosa

You will always find plenty within the Yacht Club to keep you occupied on a short sailing, like my jaunt to Guernsey , but for those who want a longer adventure, the ship within a ship concept is perfect because you can access the variety of dining and entertainment facilities that would be impossible to fit on a smaller vessel, but still escape back to the sanctuary of your bubble afterwards.

On MSC Virtuosa, the entertainment space is split into two areas. Deck seven is home to speciality restaurants that overlook Galleria Virtuosa on deck six, a promenade flanked by bars, more restaurants and the largest shopping area at sea. To the rear of the ship, through the casino, is the Carousel Lounge, where acrobatic-style shows are put on every night, while musical productions take place in the 945-seat Le Grand Théâtre to the front. A second entertainment space starts from deck 15.

MSC Virtuosa

MSC Virtuosa. Picture: Ivan Sarfatti

The open-air Atmosphere Pool takes pride of place in the middle of the ship, surrounded by bars, loungers and whirlpool baths, but there are a couple of others dotted around the ship. Dedicated kids’ and teens’ clubs are on decks 16 and 18, alongside a basketball court and virtual reality games. The interactive cinema is particularly thrilling.

However, the pièce de résistance is on deck 19, where an aerial obstacle course wraps around a water park . I managed just a fraction of the ship and was completely exhausted. Luckily, the memory foam mattress and Egyptian cotton sheets in the Yacht Club cabins make getting a restful night’s sleep a breeze.

The Haven sun deck on Norwegian Viva

More luxury ship-within-a-ship areas

MSC Cruises isn’t the only line to offer a more luxurious enclave on board a bigger ship. Here are some of the other places to upgrade your experience

The Haven by Norwegian

NCL introduced The Haven on Norwegian Breakaway and has now rolled it out across nine ships in the fleet, with more to come on new vessels Prima and Viva . Expect a concierge and 24-hour butler; private sun deck, lounge and restaurant; in-room extras and more, with some inclusions varying by ship.

The Retreat by Celebrity Cruises

As part of Celebrity’s move to create a ‘new luxury’ vibe , enjoy private restaurant Luminae with dishes created by Daniel Boulud, complimentary in-suite dining, a sun deck with hot tub and loungers (on selected ships), plus a private lounge, premium drinks, pre-paid tips and onboard credit.

The Retreat, Celebrity Beyond

The Retreat, Celebrity Beyond. Picture: Ryan Wicks

Grill Suites by Cunard

Elevate Cunard’s classy cruises even further with its most luxurious cabins, which are not clustered together in a private enclave but rather occupy the most sought-after spots on the ship. Book a Princess Grill or Queens Grill suite to enjoy lavish accommodation, a more intimate lounge and restaurant with open-seated dining, bubbly on arrival, Penhaligon’s toiletries and a host of other in-suite extras.

Royal Suite Class by Royal Caribbean

There are three levels of upgrade in the Royal Suite Class – Sea, Sky and Star – which offer more spacious accommodation, priority boarding and upgraded amenities, plus, in higher tiers, concierge service, tips, speciality dining and a ‘Royal Genie’ butler. Latest ship Wonder of the Seas has even added a dedicated Suite Neighbourhood.

Everything you need to know about MSC Cruises cabins and suites

A relative newcomer in the North American market, MSC Cruises is equal parts elegant and kitschy. The line tends to appeal to a wide swath of cruisers, from Europeans who like to party into the wee hours of the morning to American families who book because of affordable fares and "kids sail free" pricing.

To satisfy its diverse passenger base, MSC offers accommodations to fit all types of travelers. Rooms include inexpensive inside cabins that sleep two people, midlevel staterooms with windows and balconies, and high-end suites that offer cruisers with larger budgets a private oasis in the form of the MSC Yacht Club .

A variety of connecting rooms and cabins with extra bunks accommodate larger groups and families who wish to share space.

Because your cruise cabin will be your home away from home for several days, it's important to book one that fits your needs. That's especially true if you're sharing it with several people.

Whether you're looking at an inside cabin for a cruise with friends, balcony accommodations for you and your significant other or a suite for your family, here TPG breaks down what you can expect when you book a room on one of MSC's ships.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

MSC Cruises cabin primer

MSC Cruises has become one of the fastest-growing lines in the cruise industry, with about two dozen ships in its fleet. The vessels fall into six classes : Lirica, Musica, Fantasia, Meraviglia, Seaside and World.

Although cabin offerings can vary from ship to ship and class to class, the standard types remain the same: inside, outside, balcony and suite.

Additionally, you'll find the same basic amenities in each room, unless otherwise noted below. They include two twin beds that can be joined to form a queen- or king-size bed; an in-cabin bathroom with a shower, a sink, a toilet and basic soap, shower gel and shampoo; a couple of nightstands; a chair or sofa; a desk/vanity; a closet; a safe; a hair dryer; a minifridge; a phone; USB outlets and a selection of both North American and European outlets.

On all ships except MSC Lirica, MSC Opera, MSC Sinfonia and MSC Armonia, you'll also find an interactive TV that allows you to view the daily schedule, check your onboard account and choose from a selection of live TV programs and movies.

Twice-daily room tidying is provided by a room steward assigned to each cabin, and room service is available throughout the day for an added fee.

One confusing aspect of MSC's bookings is that you'll have to select an experience package in addition to a cabin type. Package tiers determine things like your ability to choose a specific cabin and preferred dining time and whether you'll receive welcome amenities in your room. Certain cabin types are only available in conjunction with certain package experiences and vice versa. Those are noted in each respective section below.

Accessible cabins , including accommodations for wheelchair users, are available on every ship in MSC's fleet. In addition to more space, they feature wider doorways and lowered sinks and toilets in the bathrooms, as well as grab bars.

MSC Cruises' experience packages

Here's what you get when you book each of MSC's three experience packages, which determine the perks you'll receive on your sailing.

  • Accommodations
  • Complimentary food in the dining room and buffet
  • Broadway-style theater entertainment
  • Access to the onboard gym, pool and kids club
  • MSC Voyagers Club points
  • One for-fee change to your cruise booking (with some restrictions)
  • Drink package discount at time of booking
  • All Bella perks
  • Choice of specific cabin and location
  • One free change to your cruise booking (with some restrictions)
  • Ability to choose between early and late seating for dinner
  • Room service (complimentary for breakfast, but fees apply for other meals)
  • Discount on pre-cruise specialty dining package
  • All Fantastica and Bella perks
  • Flexible My Choice dining, which lets you eat at any time you choose between set hours
  • Free 24-hour room service delivery
  • Pillow menu

  • A 10% discount on all spa treatments purchased on board

Inside cabins on MSC Cruises ships

Inside cabins — rooms with no windows — are available on all ships in the MSC fleet. Ranging from 140 to 301 square feet (depending on the ship), they make for great sleeping because they're so dark. They're also ideal for passengers who are on a budget.

In addition to the standard amenities mentioned above, they provide room for anywhere from two to four passengers to sleep. (Rooms that sleep more than two feature bunks that pull down from the ceiling.)

These cabins are available with the line's Bella and Fantastica experiences.

If you're sailing solo, some MSC vessels offer cabins for one outfitted with a twin bed that converts into a couch. These interior studio accommodations are only available with the Bella package on MSC Meraviglia , MSC Bellissima and the line's World Class ships.

Ocean-view cabins on MSC Cruises ships

Ocean-view rooms are similar to insides in that they provide basic amenities — but with a view.

Offering 129 to 269 square feet of space (depending on the specific ship and ocean-view category), these staterooms allow you to see outside through a porthole or a window that doesn't open.

MSC's outside cabins are available to passengers who book Bella and Fantastica packages.

Additionally, if you're traveling with your family or another group, several of MSC Cruises' ships — particularly those in the Meraviglia and Seaside classes — feature space for as many as 10 passengers via a series of connecting rooms. Options are available at the ocean-view and balcony levels.

Balcony cabins on MSC Cruises ships

You might be surprised to discover that most of MSC Cruises' balcony cabins provide less interior square footage than what's available in inside or ocean-view staterooms.

Balcony rooms run anywhere from 129 to 205 square feet, but their key feature is, of course, a private balcony, which does add an extra 32 to 129 square feet, depending on the vessel and specific type of balcony room booked. These cabins are bookable in conjunction with MSC's Bella, Fantastica and Aurea experiences.

Although balcony cabins offer upgraded amenities, including MSC's brand of hand lotion and toiletries, they are largely the same as inside and ocean-view accommodations.

MSC's newest ships — including those in the Meraviglia, Seaside and World Classes — house connecting balcony rooms that can sleep up to 10 in the same group traveling together.

Additionally, on its World Class ships, the line has introduced inward-facing balconies, similar to the ones Royal Caribbean pioneered in 2009 with the debut of its Oasis Class vessels . On World Europa, for example, they overlook the ship's promenade, offering views of the activity below, rather than the ocean.

MSC Cruises suites

All ships in MSC's fleet have suites that can be booked as part of the Fantastica and Aurea packages, but it's Aurea that offers the largest number of perks, as outlined above.

The several types of suites vary by ship in terms of size and amenities. Some come with balconies, while others only offer floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows.

Junior Suites

Although this room type is listed as a suite, it's essentially a balcony cabin with a bit more space — 183 square feet of interior accommodation with a balcony that ranges from 140 to 183 square feet.

Standard suites include rooms with huge balconies larger than the cabin's interior space and ones with private whirlpool tubs. They run from 269 to 355 square feet, with balconies measuring 32 to 409 square feet.

Grand Suites

Coming in between 377 and 420 square feet, with balconies spanning from 32 to 495 square feet, Grand Suites — found on Seaside and World Class ships — come in two types. They include standard one-bedroom Grand Suites, as well as two-bedroom varieties.

The latter has one bedroom with a queen-size bed and another with two twins. It sleeps up to five passengers and offers two bathrooms — one with a shower and the other with a bathtub.

While most suites are designed for double occupancy, some suite accommodations on MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Magnifica can sleep up to five people.

MSC Yacht Club suites on MSC ships

All cabins located in the MSC Yacht Club — an exclusive, gated area on select ships — are called suites, even the smallest and least expensive, which don't have windows or balconies.

Yacht Club suite types range from insides to two-deck duplexes, all of which come with butler and concierge services, luxuriously appointed furnishings (such as real marble finishes, memory foam mattresses and Egyptian cotton sheets) and access to members-only restaurants, bars (alcohol is free there), lounges, pools and sun decks.

The Yacht Club features seven different types of rooms. Ships that have the MSC Yacht Club on board include MSC Bellissima, MSC Divina, MSC Fantasia, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Preziosa, MSC Seaside, MSC Seascape, MSC Seaview, MSC Seashore, MSC Splendida, MSC Virtuosa and MSC World Europa.

Note: Not all Yacht Clubs have the same suite types available.

MSC Yacht Club Interior Suites

Although these 161- to 226-square-foot cabins don't offer a view or fresh air, they are elegantly decorated and include all the Yacht Club benefits mentioned above.

MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Suites

These Yacht Club digs are the equivalent of a balcony cabin — but in a dedicated area that includes all the exclusive perks. They run 236 to 366 square feet and have balconies ranging from 54 to 86 square feet, so they also come with a bit more space, both inside and outdoors.

MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Grand Suites

Similarly, Deluxe Grand Suites are like the Yacht Club equivalent of booking a Grand Suite with more perks. Depending on the ship, they offer anywhere from 269 to 463 square feet of space, plus 65- to 129-square-foot balconies. Some Grand Suites also have two bedrooms instead of one. Further, these rooms on Seaside Class ships include bathrooms with bathtubs, as well as separate living areas.

MSC Yacht Club Duplex Suites

Rising two decks, MSC's duplex staterooms measure 495 to 635 square feet and come with 65- to 334-square-foot balconies. They feature living rooms with two-person sofa beds downstairs and master bedrooms upstairs, which also sleep two passengers.

Each of these accommodations comes complete with two walk-in closets and two bathrooms — one with a bathtub and one with a shower. Most duplexes on Meraviglia and World Class ships also have their own private whirlpool tubs.

MSC Yacht Club Executive and Family Suites

The line's Executive and Family Suites, available only on Fantasia Class vessels, are an excellent choice for anyone who wants to stay in the Yacht Club with a family or other group of more than two people.

This option, which is one type of suite (despite its confusing name), has space for up to five cruisers via a combination of bunk beds, sofa beds and beds that pull down from the ceiling, depending on the ship. The suites clock in at around 431 to 549 square feet, depending on the vessel.

The only drawback is that these staterooms have no balconies and no in-room dining areas, but they do include all the perks you'd find in Yacht Club cabins.

MSC Yacht Club Royal Suites

Although they only occupy one level, at 388 to 667 square feet, MSC's Yacht Club Royal Suites are right up there with the Duplex Suites in terms of space. They offer the second-largest amount of square footage after the Owner's Suites. They come with huge balconies comprising 355 to 753 square feet of outdoor area.

Additionally, bathrooms in these suites offer bathtubs on Fantasia, Meraviglia, Seaside and World Class ships, and the latter three have private whirlpool tubs, as well. All four classes' Royal Suites also include separate living room areas.

MSC Yacht Club Owner's Suites

The largest and most impressive of all MSC's cabins are the Owner's Suites found in the Yacht Club. Offering an impressive 840 to 1,119 square feet — larger than some land-based apartments — plus 269- to 670-square-foot balconies, they're some of the most luxurious rooms afloat.

Specific amenities vary by ship, but as an example, Owner's Suites on MSC World Europa offer floor-to-ceiling windows and walk-in closets. These accommodations on both the line's Seaside and World Class vessels also feature bathrooms with separate showers and bathtubs, as well as private whirlpool tubs and separate living room areas.

Bottom line

Although MSC Cruises' cabin types are straightforward, the line's add-on experiences can complicate things a bit.

Overall, what's key to remember is that MSC Cruises offers a wide variety of rooms and pricing to meet just about any budget or style of cruising. Each ship will offer accommodation choices from the least expensive, bare-bones interior rooms to the priciest suites, which come with butler and concierge services.

When you sail with MSC Cruises, you can expect function, style and comfort, regardless of the cabin type you book.
