Rolls-Royce Boat Tail

The lavish Rolls-Royce Boat Tail  made one helluva splash when it was unveiled earlier this year, but very few have seen it in the flesh. Until now, that is.

The singular cabriolet, which is believed to be the most expensive new car in existence, made its first public appearance at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Northern Italy over the weekend in fittingly glamorous fashion.

“It is a truly historic moment for the marque,” Rolls-Royce’s CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös said in a statement . “We are leading a modern coachbuilding movement that takes the wider luxury industry into an entirely different space, where hyper-personalization and contemporary patronage provide essentially limitless possibilities.”

Indeed, this hand-built masterpiece has been customized to the nth degree. Named after its tapered rear end, the V-12 beauty showcases bespoke detailing unlike any Rolls on the planet and took four painstaking years to complete.

Spanning an imposing 19 feet, the four-wheeler houses a full suite of opulent features, including a dual Champagne cooler specifically designed to hold bottles of Jay-Z’s very own Armand de Brignac bubbly, another onboard fridge to store the requisite caviar and canapé, plus a complete set of crockery by Christofle of Paris. There’s also a parasol that pops up out of the rear to create a makeshift dining space.

Arguably the coolest touch, though, is the car’s time-keeping accessory. Bovet designed matching “his and hers” watches for Mr. and Mrs. Carter that can actually pull double duty as the Boat Tail’s clock. When not on the wrist of music royalty, either one of the timepieces can slide into a slot on the minimalist dash to add a touch horological precision.

Of course, this is about more than one super luxe car. Rolls-Royce says launch of the Boat Tail represents a pivotal moment for the luxury sector at large. It has shown the vast new possibilities for collectors to create one-of-a-kind luxury rides in which both the bodywork and interior are built bespoke exactly to their personal specifications.

Now that’s certainly a trend we can get behind.

12 Pontiac Models With Impressive Resale Values

This abandoned dealership filled with classic cars is the internet's biggest mystery, the rarest ford production car ever, key takeaways.

  • The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is an incredibly luxurious and expensive car, with only three models ever being made.
  • The craftsmanship and attention to detail in the Boat Tail are unparalleled, with over 1,800 unique parts and fully bespoke customization options.
  • The Boat Tail is owned by high-profile individuals such as Jay-Z and Beyonce, and each model takes nearly a year to hand-build, making it a true masterpiece of automotive design.

Rolls-Royce as a brand defines luxury. The company has been in existence for over 100 years , and in this time, they have produced some outstanding luxury cars . Perhaps the best example is the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, a bespoke grand tourer from the company's Coachbuild department.

Updated September 2023: With new Rolls-Royce Coachbuild commissions now revealed, we've updated this article to see where the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail stands, and if still is the most expensive new car in the world.

Apart from being a work of art, it's also one of the world's most expensive new cars , even if its price tag is only speculated at since Rolls-Royce hasn't actually revealed it. If that isn't brag-worthy enough, you can count on one hand how many examples of the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail will be made, which sort of justifies the eye-watering price tag.

What Makes The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail So Special?

The Rolls-Royce Sweptail was a luxury car unveiled in 2017. The design of the Boat Tail is similar to the Sweptail , and they both are inspired by yachts of the 1920s and 1930s. The Boat Tail series was designed by the company's specialized Coachbuild division at the Goodwood facility. The art of coach building is something that unifies engineers, craftsmen, and artists to create an entirely new motorcar.

The Boat Tail is the company’s most ambitious project, and the entire coach building process is done in collaboration with its clients. Although the premium car shares most of its underpinnings with the Rolls-Royce Phantom, the flagship series-production sedan , it features over 1,800 fully unique parts.

The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail series are fully bespoke cars, with no two being alike in the way they are specced, and what materials are used to personalize them. Of course, that only three models of the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail will ever be made also adds to its significance.

Who Owns A Rolls-Royce Boat Tail?

As reported, a total of just three Rolls-Royce Boat Tail models will be built. The first Rolls-Royce Boat Tail commission was revealed to the world in 2021. This car finished in oceanic blue was said to be commissioned by rapper Jay-Z and his popstar-wife, Beyonce . At the time of the reveal, this information was not made public, but all the rumors from all the sources can't be wrong. The blue example of the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail was spotted recently in Dubai . The second Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, finished in a cognac-brown has been commissioned by a wealthy private buyer, and was revealed in 2022. It's not known if the third owner will choose to publicly display their car.

Since the vehicle is entirely hand-built, it took Rolls-Royce nearly a year to finish each Boat Tail model from scratch. Every car is customized to its owner's taste and liking, and there is no compromise in terms of quality. It is reported that the second of the three Rolls-Royce Boat Tails has been commissioned by a businessman who made his fortune in the pearl business started by his father.

The gentleman owns an extensive collection of classic and modern-day cars, kept in a private museum, and the Boat Tail will now be the latest addition to this collection. Although the car’s design is similar to the previous version, the paint shade is very exclusive and uses pearl tints and rose gold. Besides, it also contains fine gold and bronze-colored aluminum mica flakes embedded in the paint for an added touch of opulence.

Why The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail Is Worth $28 Million

The company takes comfort and luxury to the next level by sending a painted panel of the vehicle to the owner’s residence only to inspect how the color would look in different sunlight conditions. The interior is just as beautiful as the exterior, and Rolls-Royce takes care of the minor details by providing men's and women's watches manufactured by Bovet Fleurier. What is extraordinary about these watches is that they can be worn as a wristwatch, used as a desk clock, or even as a pocket watch.

The car also has rotating cocktail tables, matching stool seats, a complete set of Christofle tableware, and two fridges in the same color scheme to match the champagne bottles. The care of such intricate details can be taken only by Rolls-Royce . The Boat Tail is technologically so advanced, the Bose sound system in the Boat Tail uses the car's floor structure as a resonance chamber. Moreover, it includes a Montblanc pen in a hand-crafted case inside the glove box.

The interior is beautifully crafted with cognac and oyster leather and a touch of royal walnut veneer on the dashboard. The gauges and control knobs all feature real mother-of-pearl inlays, and the removable timepiece mounted in the dashboard is made from a piece of pearl supplied by the owner themselves. A picnic set located on the deck features Porcelain glasses and plates with a rose gold finish. The signature butterfly design for the rear deck is carried forward from the previous vehicle.

However, the specialty of this particular example is that even the signature Rolls-Royce hood ornament, the Spirit of Ecstasy is finished in rose gold , something never seen before on a Roller. The large grille upfront is also made out of a single piece of aluminum and has a brushed metal finish. All of this inclusively makes this example of the Boat Tail worth every penny of the $25-28 million asking price.

Is The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail The Most Expensive Car?

Overall, the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is an ultra-exclusive and expensive car. Rolls-Royce can be defined as an automobile manufacturer producing sheer works of art on wheels. Of course, the company is constantly outdoing itself, and the latest Rolls-Royce Drop Tail commission is again said to be the most expensive car in the world . The estimated price tag on the new Amethyst Drop Tail is said to in the region of $28 million, so it's entirely possible the previous run of Boat Tail models were in reality less than initially estimated.

A REFERENTIAL SILHOUETTE

Boat Tail’s nautical form evokes graceful J-class yachts and a 1932 Rolls-Royce Boat Tail the owners lovingly restored as part of their expansive collection.

A LESSON IN SYMMETRY

Modern open-pore Caleidolegno offsets the soft blue lacquer. Reminiscent of wooden hull forms, the material is skilfully book matched and perfectly symmetrical.

A VISION IN BLUE

The clients’ favourite hue: an oceanic blue infused with shimmering crystals. The complex colour is subtle in shadow and vibrant in light. Its smooth edges were achieved by delicately running a finger over the definitive body line before the paint set.

A SENSE OF OCCASION

At the press of a button, the deck opens in a sweeping butterfly gesture, revealing an intricate hosting suite replete with a whimsical parasol. Its movement evokes cantilever concepts explored by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava.

A PRESERVATION OF TIME

Two-sided timepieces, one for the lady and one for the gentleman, can be worn or placed within the fascia as car clocks. The timepieces required Rolls-Royce and Bovet 1822 to work in partnership for over three years.

Behold: the new Rolls-Royce Boat Tail

Open-air, nautical-themed tourer is Rolls-Royce's first properly coachbuilt car since 2017's Sweptail

rolls royce yacht price

Ladies and gentlemen of the internet, welcome to the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail – a near-six metre long grand tourer with a removable “canopy” roof and something called a “hosting suite” hidden beneath the rear-deck.

Based on the same basic platform as the Phantom, and likely fitted with its V12, Rolls has hand-built a grand total of three of these things for customers who “share a deep appreciation of contemporary nautical design”. The car’s aesthetic is inspired by J-Class yachts and ‘Boat Tail’ Rolls-Royces of yore, which were created when coachbuilders began grafting “the hull forms of sailing boats” onto rolling Rolls chassis in the Twenties and Thirties.

Indeed, the couple that commissioned the car pictured also own a 1932 Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, which they’ve just had restored to coincide with the arrival of their hugely expensive new toy.

The Boat Tail is road-legal, and Rolls claims it’s undergone all the same dynamic testing as its core models. Though it’s based on the company’s existing aluminium architecture, which took eight months to adapt to the Boat Tail’s proportions, the new car features 1,813 new and totally bespoke parts. Even the stereo hasn’t escaped untouched, with Rolls adapting the 15-speaker system to use the whole floor structure as a resonance chamber.

Then there’s the “hosting suite”, which has five ECUs all its own and a special wiring harness that took nine months to develop. With the push of a button the rear-deck opens butterfly-style to reveal to what is effectively, sorry Rolls, a glorified picnic set. One side is dedicated to drinks, with a double fridge designed specifically to hold (and rapidly chill to the correct temperature) the customer’s favourite kind of Champagne. The other is for nibbles.

There are fans to keep your caviar from spoiling in the warm temperatures for which the Boat Tail was designed (Rolls has tested the system up to 80 degrees Celsius). Meanwhile a parasol springs up from the centre line for shade, and there are a couple of little tables and storage compartments for two stools.

What if it rains? Well, like other Rolls-Royces (and some Skodas) the Boat Tail does have a pair of umbrellas hidden in the door cards. Rolls doesn’t talk much about the “fixed canopy roof” – which it looks like you have to erect/stow manually, and keep in the garage when not in use – but does confirm the Boat Tail is supplied with a tonneau cover for “static transitory shelter”.

The clock is worth mentioning. Besides Rolls-Royces and Champagne, the owner of this car also collects Bovet watches. Over the course of THREE YEARS Rolls and Bovet developed two tourbillon timepieces that can either be worn on the wrist or mounted on the Boat Tail’s dashboard.

How much did all this cost? Who knows, but count on many, many millions.

The Story Behind the $28 Million Rolls-Royce Boat Tail

Worth an estimated $28 million, the new custom-built Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is the most expensive car in the world—and it’s full of luxury amenities.

The vehicle is the first to come out of the marque’s Coachbuild division, a client-driven design shop born of customers’ desire for more personalized cars.

Rolls-Royce worked for four years on the design of the Boat Tail, tailoring it to fit its clients’ personalities, lifestyles—and even their favorite bottle of champagne.

The convertible houses a bespoke Christofle hosting suite with caviar, cocktail tables, picnic stools and a case of Armand de Brignac vintage cuvée.

The Boat Tail’s soft leather interiors are paired with luxurious accessories, from a hand-crafted Montblanc pen case to custom Bovet timepieces.

Coated in the clients’ favorite color, blue, the convertible takes inspiration from some of their favorite rides: J-Class racing yachts and the 1932 Boat Tail.

Nautical influences go from its wrap-around windscreen, similar to visors on motorboats, to its tapering design, which gives the effect of a boat powering through water.

Inside, blue is woven through the fabric fiber at a 55-degree angle to leave a wake effect on the car—and caused waves of speculation that it was commissioned by Beyoncé and Jay Z.

Rolls-Royce Boat Tail: latest version of world’s most expensive new car unveiled

The new arrival costs an estimated $30million — it is the second of three retro-inspired models that are entirely individual in all but name.

Rolls-Royce has unveiled its latest Boat Tail, the second in a trio of bespoke creations deemed the most expensive new cars this manufacturer — or any other — has ever created.

The first of the three was revealed to the world in 2021 , and, at the time, figures suggested an estimated price tag of between $25-28 million. Some reports indicate this latest Boat Tail to have hit the $30m mark.

The newest incarnation was revealed to the world for the first time at an event in Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d’Este, on the shores of Lake Como, Italy. And, it is no less genteel than its predecessor.

Decked out in a colour described as a blend of oyster and rose, which is designed to change subtly under different light conditions, Rolls-Royce refers to the car as “a masterwork of restraint, sophistication, elegance and attention to detail”.

The client, whose family has a background in the pearling industry, presented the design team with a selection of four shells, each chosen for their individual lustre, as inspiration for the distinctive hue.

The design of the car was inspired by the brand’s Phantom II Boattail from 1932, which itself took cues from early 20th-century racing yachts.

The most notable nod to this is the marine-style wood decking on the vehicle’s boot, which opens in a butterfly action when you feel like getting out the al fresco dining set (including stools and a parasol) that can be found in there.

The various individual features came about following a collaboration over a number of years between the manufacturer and the client, making it entirely unique.

As per usual, the car has been crafted by hand, with the body panels created from single beaten sheets of aluminium. This includes what Rolls-Royce refers to as the pantheon grille as the front.

In keeping with the colour scheme, the Spirit of Ecstasy figurine has also been fashioned in a rose gold hue.

The manufacture of the third Boat Tail is currently underway, though it is unlikely to see the light of day before 2023.
