BROKER'S COMMENTS

It is remarkable that such a small unassuming boat has almost become Laurent Giles’s hallmark rather than one his other important designs in the league of large luxury yachts and ocean racers. From before the 2nd World War Vertues have criss-crossed most of the World’s oceans; many such voyages undertaken single handed speaking volumes for this enduring design. ELLENOR JOSEPHINE was commissioned and built IBTC Lowestoft to a high specification by someone who wanted to sail long distances. Much thought has also gone into her inventory. In the event, she has cruised but not been very far afield and she remains in a condition close to that when launched in 1990. This boat would be as perfect for mucking about on a Saturday outing in the West Country as she would for taking on the mid Atlantic.

Class comments

The extended cruising version of this design was known as the Vertue Ocean and incorporated modifications from the original Vertue design suggested to Laurent Giles by Humphrey Barton. They were described on p 158 of his book entitled “Vertue XXXV”. The class was actually named post war by Laurent Giles in recognition of the presentation to Lawrence Biddle and Humphrey Barton on EPENETA, of the Little Ship Club’s Vertue Cup for their crossing the Bay of Biscay in 1939. There is a chapter in the book “Laurent Giles and his Yacht Designs” by Adrian Lee and Ruby Philpott dedicated to the Vertues and detailing numerous members of the Class with numerous anecdotes extolling their resilience, practicality and sheer performance in some of the World’s most powerful oceans. Humphrey Barton following his epic passage from the Lizard to Sandy Hook off New York in 1950 was to say: “I honestly believe she best designed built and equipped small ocean going cruising yacht that has yet been produced. Her ability to stand up to bad weather, her remarkable high performance under sail and the comfort of her accommodation are outstanding” - No surprise then that even before the Class half century, some 200 had been built.

This boat was launched in November 1990 for Mr Ian Wright and named PATIENCE. Mr Wright died around 2005, his widow selling the boat to Mr Brian Edmunds MBE FCA in August 2006. Her current owner bought her in July 2009 at Tollesbury in Essex, then taking her to Mashfords Yard opposite Plymouth Devon, where she underwent an extensive refit. And was renamed ELLENOR JOSEPHINE.

Wooden Ships Comments on this Laurent Giles Vertue V40

The Vertue is one the most iconic British yacht designs of all time, examples of which have voyaged the world and proved themselves as incredible sea boats with capabilities far beyond their size.  This particular boat, Laurent Giles Vertue V40, is a very nice example, that has benefited from a regime of continuous maintenance and light use.

Designed by Laurent Giles and built by Stebbings of Burnham on Crouch in 1951.  She was built for the Festival of Britain exhibition in 1951 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festival_of_Britain ) as an example of top class British boat building and craftsmanship, there are black and white photos of her being exhibited with her original varnished hull.  She was named ‘Festival Vertue’ when launched.

After this she remained in the same family for over  50 years, based in Essex, where she was very well maintained and had a major professional refit in 2005.  She then moved to Devon where she is now based and has been kept up to a very good standard by her diligent owner with professional help where required.  She has had only 3 fastidious owners since 1951

This is the short doghouse model giving a slightly larger cockpit and a bridge deck, ideal for weekend and day sailing.  The interior offers 2 comfortable berths and 6′ headroom plus a heads and galley, everything you need for local cruising and long weekends aboard.

Annual refits have been carried out each year for the current owner by a professional shipwright keeping her in good overall order. (Schedule is available)

Benefitting from a Nov 2022 Survey, the Surveyor concluded “Virtue Fidelis was generally found to be in very good order, particularly in view of the fact that the vessel is more than 70 years old.” and valued her at the price of £22,000

This is a very smart example of the Vertue in ready to go condition with a nice pedigree and history.

Refit during September to November 2022 as follows:

• Unstep mast and all rigging and standing rigging.
• Refit anti chafe covers to spreaders
• Rig Report carried out by Lee Rogers Rigging – See separate Report
• Complete mast refit back to bare wood with 9 coats of protection, re-painted steelwork as required.
• New wiring and fixings for mast head light and VHF ariel fitted.
• Bumpkin rigging shackles upgraded to load tested SS Shackles.
• A total of 11No Keel Bolts drawn and inspected.
• 3 No small Bronze false keel bolts checked in perfect condition – refitted in false keel.
• 8 No new EN8 (High Tensile strength Medium Carbon) Steel Spun Galvanised Ballast keel bolts machined and re-refitted with Linseed Oil/Red Led powder mix with Caulking and Sika at top and bottom of each keel
• Hull refurbished as required with small, localised repairs refit with graving pieces, plugs, red lead putty. Sacrificial timber keel forward of iron ballast keel re-bedded screwed and plugged.
• Repair to one area of underside of false keel using elm pieces.
• Hull – 2 coats of Sea Jet Primer No 15 and 2 coats of Sea Jet Anitfoul No 33 Applied
• Sea Cocks all checked and working.
• Mast base timber plate refurbished, primed and painted.
• Bumkin timber refurbished 6 coats of Epifanes
• New anode fitted plus new aft inboard anode support pad replaced.
• Deck repainted with Hempel Grip deck paint.
• Bulwark and covering Boards repainted with 2 coats Hempel white satin topcoat.
• Coach Roof, Coamings, Hatches, Handrails and Bulwark capping all varnished.
• Interior – Underside of T&G decking repainted with 2 coats of Zinsser sealing/priming paint and 2 coats of Antimould Paint topcoat.
• Independent professional survey carried out 7 th November 2022 – Available on request.

Construction

Planked in Honduras mahogany all copper rivet fastened to steam bent oak timbers.  Hull splined from new as she was originally varnished.

Mainly grown oak floors across the centreline with a few galvanised straps in the ends of the hull.

External iron ballast keel of just over 2 tons.  11 new keel bolts were drawn in November 2022, 3No bronze bolts to the false timber keel were in perfect condition and replaced with new bronze nuts.

8 No Ballast Keel Bolts have been professionally replaced with Galvanised EN8 (high tensile strength) steel.

Sheathed T&G Red Cedar decks, finished in deck paint.  Decks sheathed in original canvas, the canvas is in excellent condition and deck maintenance is a simple task of occasional deck repainting.

Bulwark taken back to bare wood in 2021 repainted with 9 coats of primer, pre-kote and top coat.

King Plank, Sampson Post and Bow Stem fitting removed new king plank fitted, finished with 2 Coats Bonda Seal, prime, undercoat, top coat of Hempel

Stainless steel pulpit and stanchions with the usual Vertue bulwark all round, this was removed and refitted in 2021. All deck pads, cleats and grab rails removed taken back to bare wood and revarnished in 2021.

Very smart cockpit with varnished mahogany slatted thwarts and scrubbed teak sole boards.

Varnished mahogany coamings with bronze framed windows.  Coamings and doghouse overhauled in 2018 and 2019, stripped to bare wood, new beading fitted and re-varnished.

Transom hung rudder with varnished tiller.

Bermudan slutter rig on a deck stepped solid varnished wooden mast mounted in a galvanised shoe on the coachroof deck.  Mast stripped to bare wood and re-varnished November 2022.

Varnished wooden slab reefing boom  with refurbished small bumpkin carrying the standing backstay.  Boom sits in a gallows across the aft of the cockpit with a double tailed mainsheet.

Standing Rigging professionally inspected in November 2022 – Separate Report Available

Stainless steel internal chain plates replaced new in 2013.

Running backstays on galvanised levers with new wooden base pads.

2 Halyard and 2 cockpit winches.

Full suite of sails including a cruising chute new in 2001.  All sails and covers valeted in 2021 with a 3 rd reef added to the mainsail. Her original sails are still with the boat

Yanmar 1GM10 single cylinder 10hp diesel installed new approximately 1997.  Regularly serviced and well maintained.

New Stainless Exhaust Elbow fitted 2020

Vetus Water Strainer added 2020. New Water Pump 2021.

Vetus water exhaust lock checked and serviced 2021

Single lever controls with a centreline fixed 3 blade bronze propeller.

Shaft log and stern tube rebuilt in 2021. New Blakes engine sea cock fitted 2018, all other Sea Cocks serviced 2021.

Simple layout below decks with 2 berths, heads and galley.

Steps down from the entrance hatch with galley to port and chart desk to starboard.

Galley has an Origo spirit stove, storage cupboards and a single stainless sink with manually pumped fresh water.

Typical Vertue half height curved bulkheads separating off the main saloon.

Settee berth either side with lee cloths and trotter boxes  at the forward end.

Centreline door into the forepeak with an aft facing Baby Blake sea toilet which was stripped and refurbished in 2020.  Space for stowage of sails, fenders etc

Alexander Marine are pleased to have SOLD the 2015 Noosa Marine built 63ft sedan power catamaran 'Bajaca'.

From the highly regarded design board of Roger Hill Yacht Design in New Zealand, and crafted by master boat builders Noosa Marine in Queensland, 'Bajaca' is a masterpiece of design, engineering, and construction. What a boat!

Her low profile makes for an athletic-looking vessel (and this is perfect for vessel owners with bridge clearance considerations). Her substantial 6.76m beam provides a huge amount of space throughout the boat! Her teak-laid cockpit is an entertainer's delight (featuring a convenient cockpit day head as well), which is easily serviced by her spacious aft galley. The aft saloon bulkhead glazing has been engineered to completely roll-away to seamlessly merge the saloon and cockpit spaces - and this it does! Her predominant flooring is a lightweight Kerlite ceramic tile product that looks sensational and feels great under foot. The smart flooring choice is complimented with a light colour Ash timber finish. Her benchtops are all Corian.

Forward of the galley, and once it's time to finish outdoors, 'Bajaca' features a spacious interior U-shaped lounge area to port. The helm station is opposite to starboard and is equipped with Furuno touch screen electronics.

As for accommodation, she offers a four-cabin + three-head layout. Most impressive (and practical) is the on-deck master cabin up forward, with a spacious portside tiled ensuite. This cabin has lots of natural light and natural ventilation. In the port hull, a spacious VIP cabin features an athwartships queen size bed and has its own ensuite. The aft-most port cabin features a double bed. The starboard hull features a mirror aft-positioned double bed. Both the aft cabins use a spacious head complete with a frameless glass shower that is in the starboard hull - this space also features a separate laundry room.

As for her cruising credentials 'Bajaca' is ready for adventure. She carries a massive 9,600 litres of diesel. She is equipped with two generators which provide redundancy (meaning also you can run the best-sized generator for your power needs on that day), a watermaker, good refrigeration, and laundry. This is a genuine blue water vessel.

Her Highfield centre console RIB Tender is stowed in a recess on the roof, which is launched and retrieved via her low profile Davco crane. There is also spare room on the roof for storage of additional water toys.

Her engine room spaces are spotlessly clean and generously proportioned (with lots of room around each main engine). She will sprint to approx 28 knots, and her optimum cruise speed is around 20 knots burning as low as 90 litres per hour total - that's just 4.5 litres per nautical mile!

Her lithium house battery package, and Awlgrip two pak paint finish, are yet further confirmation this vessel was built to a superyacht standard.

Trailerable multihull or powercat-hull reviews are few and far between. That’s because local powercat manufacturers are just as few and just as far between – whether fibreglass cats or aluminium. Luckily, the few that do manufacture trailerable power catamarans in Australia produce some really top performing, quality boats.

Noosa Cat 2400

Noosa Cat is definitely one of the popular fibreglass power catamaran brands in Australia, especially in the commercial industry. Rescue services, police boats, maritime safety and others consistently run Noosa Cat fleets, and it’s not surprising as the build quality and design for intended purpose are second to none.

In the recreational sector there’s certainly a Noosa Cat cult, with many seen moored up at canal homes, used as weekenders and big gamefish hunting boats. Starting at 24 feet they’re certainly not toys by any means and after testing the latest Noosa Cat 2400 Series Open Cabin it’s no surprise they have such a strong following.

Layout and design

On the water the Noosa Cat 2400 definitely has attractive lines. A cross of modern and old-school, at a glance it comes across as a typically good weekender or as a serious offshore fishing weapon.

Multihulls will always have the edge over monohull of the same size for cockpit and general deck space, and with the Noosa Cat 2400 sporting an open 2.5m beam there’s enough room to throw a party on this boat. The layout on the 2400 Series Open Cabin test boat was simple and most certainly geared for maximum fishability.

The stern walk-through with ladder and transom door is generous and has sealed transom hatches to the sides for batteries and plumbing, maintaining a neat and flush finish to maximise the fishability in the stern. The centre self-draining deck not only allows for quick water drainage but makes cleaning a simple task.

As for storage, the gunwale side pockets have plenty of space for gear and having a gunwale door on the starboard side is great for easy access when boarding and a great spot to drag that monster tuna onto the deck too. The self-draining wet deck sits well above the waterline and eliminates any splash or water flow through the side door.

On the comfort side, the back-to-back seating configuration at the helm not only fits four comfortably, but also has built-in oversized insulated Eskies/kill tanks, eliminating the need for deck-mounted hatches and kill tanks.

Cabin hardtop

The open cab hardtop provides good protection from the elements and has triple windscreens with wipers as standard, as well as wide side windows and dual transparent roof-hatches to maintain the light and keep the air flowing – a definite must for summer in Queensland. For winter, the roll-up vinyl screen/bulkhead enclose the cab, adding to the protection from the elements and maintaining warmth in the colder months. For overnighters in the tropics this can be replaced with an optional mozzie-screen.

The helm has a good dash set-up, allowing for comfortable driving whether seated or standing. I also like the angle and space available on the dash for electronics as it can take the larger flush-mount systems that are clearly visible seated or standing regardless of the light angles.

Up in the bow, the cabin is a reasonable size with included cab-door, infill-bunk cushion and a bit of storage space. For fishers I can see it being crammed with extra tackle and rods while those looking at stays on the water could set it up quite comfortably to sleep two.

Interestingly, a Noosa Cat customer took delivery of his new 2400 and flashed it past the lens on his way out. His 2400 was tricked up to the max for offshore fishing, with tackle/bait station centred on the rear deck, as well as rocket launchers and extra fishing trinkets which definitely took the boat to the next level – obviously these are all optional features available from Noosa Cat.

Handling and ride

The 2400’s offshore ride characteristics are another impressive part of the performance. Having only driven the Noosa Cats at Yamaha events within the broad water on the Gold Coast I always thought they rode well, but never had the chance to really test the ride in its true environment – rough conditions offshore.

With a prediction of 5-8kt and very little swell offshore of Noosa it wasn’t going to be a gruelling test but thankfully the weatherman stuffed up and a brisk 12-15kt SE produced decent swell and chop for the hull rating.

On top of its power performance, the 2400 produces one of the better rides for a cat of this size. Stability is notably good; she sits very comfortably at rest and is just as stable up on the plane and at high speeds. The dreaded ‘thump’ through the tunnel when knocking through chop and swell is a problem in average-riding cats and makes the ride pretty uncomfortable. But that’s far from the case on the 2400 as the bow gets good lift and airflow through the tunnel, maintaining a quieter and softer ride in the rough at speed – pretty impressive.

Tight turns on a cat are make or break – a good riding one maintains a level attitude in the turn or banks slightly to the inside sponson. Hulls that do the opposite – hook and lean onto the outer pontoon are unpleasant to drive in my opinion and probably enough to turn anyone off cat hulls. Again, no worries with the 2400 as it comfortably maintains a level attitude in turns at mid and higher speeds. Low down, the inner sponson grabs nicely in tight turns with a bit of inside lean and this is definitely what I prefer when negotiating bars or surf zones.

Regardless of speed, the 2400 is a really easy and comfortable boat to drive without having to consistently adjust trims to account for lean – you can pretty much set the trims to suit the conditions then sit back and relax while at the helm.

The Trade-a-Boat verdict

The Noosa Cat 2400 Series Open Cabin is an easily manageable, towable cat and doesn’t require a massive vehicle with a rating over 3500kg to cart it around. Considering the performance characteristics and fishable layout, the 2400 also has no issues when it comes to tackling heavy conditions and long-range offshore fishing expeditions.

For those looking for a bit more glamour on the water, transforming the 2400 into a weekender or more of a cruise boat is also a simple task with the numerous options available. The 2400 suits family boating and serious offshore business alike – and if you’re chasing an upgrade, a boat that’s going to last and one that holds its value over time then jump on a Noosa Cat for a test drive – you might be pleasantly surprised at what they have to offer.
