In 1903, when everyone else was building boats from wood, we built ours out of aluminum, which was lighter, tougher, and completely maintenance-free. In 1958, we innovated further with the launch of our first fiberglass models. Then in 1965, we introduced the world’s first high performance aluminum fishing boat with a Deep-V hull. We were pioneers in developing high performance pontoon boats, and set the standard with our revolutionary HMX tubes. Our history is one of constant innovation, and that only results from spending time on the water.

While our designs have changed and evolved over the years, what has remained constant is the painstaking care and meticulous attention to detail that goes into crafting every single one of our boats. SunChaser is a custom motor yacht launched in 1991 by Christensen in Vancouver Wa, United States and most recently refitted in 2002.

Christensen Shipyard has earned itself a position amongst the world's composite fibreglass construction leaders with its renowned custom and semi-custom superyachts. With a current fleet of yachts from 35 to 48m, the American company prides itself on achieving the finest quality and attention to detail in each of its megayachts.

SunChaser measures 38.10 metres in length, with a max draft of 1.95 metres and a beam of 8.20 metres. She has a gross tonnage of 237 tonnes. She has a deck material of teak.

A General Description of Motor Yacht SUNCHASER

This motor yacht SUNCHASER is a 43 m 142 (foot) ample composite vessel which was manufactured at Richmond Yachts and designed by Setzer Design Group. Sleeping 12 guests and 7 professional crew, motor yacht SUNCHASER was formerly 3 which was her project name and/or actual name. Launched by 2006 the comparatively recent internal styling illustrates the talents in the designing of Pavlik Yacht Design.

Building & Yacht Design of Luxury Yacht SUNCHASER

Setzer Design Group was the naval architecture company involved in the technical superyacht plans for SUNCHASER. Her interior design was conceived by Pavlik Yacht Design. Setzer Design Group is also associated with the yacht general design work for this boat. In 2006 she was actually launched to triumph in Richmond Bc and post sea trials and detailing was then delivered to the yacht owner. Richmond Yachts completed their new build motor yacht in Canada. The hull was constructed with composite. The motor yacht superstructure component is made predominantly with composite. With a beam of 8.53 metres or 28 ft SUNCHASER has fairly large size. A fairly shallow draught of 2.2m (7.22ft) affects the number of marinas she can enter, depending on their individual characteristics.

Installed with twin MTU DDC diesel engines, SUNCHASER will attain a high speed of 19 knots. Connected to her MTU Ddc engine(s) are twin screw propellers. In today’s economic times, we have become numbed to business disasters, but in 2003 it was a shock when Don Davis discovered that the boatyard building his custom 138-foot trideck motoryacht wasn’t going to finish the boat on time. In fact, the builder wasn’t likely to finish the boat at all. It was on the verge of bankruptcy.

Sovereign Yachts of British Columbia had promised the world when construction began in 2001 but it was soon over its head financially. Davis’s Ward Setzer-designed Cloud Nine was likely to turn into a dark cloud that would remain an unfinished fiberglass monument and a joy only to the lawyers.

So Don Davis bought the boatyard.

He rehired much of the workforce and finished his yacht. Having dipped his toe in boatbuilding and with a boatyard and team of craftsmen in place, however, it wasn’t a big step to continue in the business, changing the company name to Richmond Yachts after the British Columbia town where the yard is based.

Obviously, Don Davis isn’t your typical boatbuilder. A Texan and a talented entrepreneur, he built up several businesses including a chain of Texas Smokehouse restaurants before cashing out to enjoy life. A long-time boat owner, he had moved into ever-larger yachts, which led, eventually, to his ownership of the boatyard. The fact that he owns an island in the Bahamas, Spanish Cay, underlines the point that Don Davis isn’t afraid to tackle unusual projects.

He didn’t approach building yachts in a typical way, either. From his experience with Sovereign (and from studying other builders), he came to the conclusion that custom yachts cost the builder too much. “Ninety-nine percent of the people who buy large yachts are perfectly happy with a semi-custom yacht. They want the boating experience, not the construction process,” he says.

From a builder’s standpoint, building a yacht on spec rather than trying to dance to an owner’s often-changing tune is not just more costeffective, but time-effective as well. By concentrating on semi-custom yachts for inventory, Richmond is able to build both faster and better.

Davis clearly understands what large yacht buyers want, and each Richmond yacht is an improvement over the last. The latest, Richmond Lady , is hull number 5 of the 142-footers and she visibly draws on lessons learned on previous yachts.

While the Setzer hull remains untouched, Davis and project manager Alan Fleet redesigned the pilothouse windows, turning them vertical rather than raked as on previous yachts. This seemingly small change cascaded into improvements throughout the yacht. First, the new windows provided more usable space and better visibility (especially in poor conditions) in the pilothouse.

This also stretched the flying bridge (which Richmond calls the “fun deck”) by nearly 5 feet. The added room also allows a VIP guest suite on the upper deck just abaft the pilothouse.

Most visitors will board from the transom platform (or the 20-foot Besenzoni passerelle) and, once on the after deck, they’ll find an unusual arrangement. Rather than a conventional settee across the transom, Richmond Lady has a pair of built-in banquettes that curve around a luscious teak table with a removable leaf for dining or cocktail use. There is a teak and granite refreshment bar and, should you tire of watching passersby on the quay, a fold-down 50-inch LCD TV.

Don’t stop here, though, because a gorgeous salon waits just inside the automatic sliding doors. Arranged for more formal entertaining with two sofas and two armchairs, the high points are a Yamaha disklavier piano and a 52-inch LCD TV in the forward bulkhead. The style throughout Richmond Lady is also set here, with high-gloss sapele pomele, a ribbon-grained African hardwood accented with inlaid burls. Fluted mullions with sconces frame the windows, which have Roman shades for privacy. Overhead, the coffered ceiling leads your eye to a backlit, etched-glass compass rose.

Like the salon, the dining room is formal and elegant. The round mahogany table seats 10, with buffet stowage on both sides for china and stemware. Overhead, a Murano glass chandelier with French gold filigree is centered over the table. But the most spectacular feature, and one that is extraordinary for a supposedly semi-custom spec-finished yacht, is the 7-foot curved gold and sapphire waterfall on the forward bulkhead.

Not only does the waterfall become a pleasant moving backdrop for meals, but Don Davis takes delight in pointing out that it has a useful purpose. As the water cascades over the starburst pattern, it gathers dust from the air, which is flushed away during the automatic daily filtering. As one crewmember noted, “There’s never any dust on this deck!”

The galley is hidden from guests’ view, but not vice versa: A cleverly concealed camera allows crew in the galley to anticipate every need without having to intrude on the dining room. It is a model of restaurant efficiency, from the butler’s pantry with an automatic door to the granite counters and sole.

The master suite is entered from the marbled foyer through a study with desk, computer center, and bookshelves. The king-sized berth is flanked by a loveseat to starboard and built-in bureaus to port.

Forward, the master head spans the suite with a shower/steamer on his side and a large Jacuzzi tub on hers, separated by an electrically operated “fog mirror” between each for privacy. Once again, marble and granite are used for floors and counters.

Davis and his team also provide a surprise on the lower deck, which -as a spec boat-you’d expect to have a conventional layout that wouldn’t offend a potential client. In this case, there are four staterooms, each with a marble-lined en suite head. All have queen-sized berths except for one, which has been outfitted as a fully equipped gym and workout room. It could quickly be returned to use as a guest cabin but, again, Davis knows his buyers and thinks this is likely to be a selling point. But wait, there are more accommodations on the upper deck, with an airy VIP stateroom tucked between pilothouse and skylounge. With its picture window, it has a great view.

If the main salon and dining areas are formal, then the skylounge is just the opposite: warm, inviting and casual. Leather sofas and chairs add a masculine flavor, and a reversible game table is ready for serious poker. If you’re kibitzing instead of betting, the built-in bar has four leather seats and a good view of the 52-inch LCD TV. The fully covered deck outside the skylounge has a teak table that seats 10, plus an immense built-in stainless steel barbecue and outdoor kitchen, wet bar, and 50-inch plasma TV.

But the flying bridge (sorry, fun deck) is where guests will likely spend their waking hours. The expanse of teak stretches almost endlessly, and it’s all devoted to total decadence. For those who want to watch the scenery, a pair of forward-facing bench lounges are backed by wraparound settees and shaded by custom umbrellas. But it’s under the radar arch-cum-hardtop where you’ll find the action.

An 18-foot tender is chocked aft of the skylounge, and water toys plus the davit are on the bridge, leaving plenty of space for sun lounges and chairs.

The crew gets the forward hull to themselves, with four wellfinished cabins for eight and three heads, plus a comfortable crew lounge with mini-galley and TV. A passageway hidden behind a bookcase leads directly from the guest cabins to the crew quarters to simplify maid services as well as provide an emergency exit.

Richmond Lady is powered by a pair of 1,800-horsepower Caterpillar C32 ACERTs just like her sisterships. This gives the yacht a comfortable cruising speed of 15 knots, and a top speed over 17 knots.

Though initially a reluctant yard owner, Don Davis has clearly embraced yacht building and his spec-built, semi-custom-but elegantly finished-offerings such as Richmond Lady are likely to intrigue clients wanting a turn-key yacht.

2011 Feadship 288 | Larry Ellison is the owner of the American software company Oracle and is one of the richest people in the world. His estimated net worth is 58 billion USD. His mega yacht, Musashi, was launched in 2011 by Feadship and is 288 feet long. Her name was inspired by a Japanese samurai which stands for ‘warrior.’ She can sleep 18 guests comfortably with nine cabins and accommodate her 23 person crew. The designers combined elements from Japanese design and art deco. They even added a spa pool on the upper deck. She is powered by four MTU 16V4000 which brings her to a top speed of 21 knots. Not only does he own this beautiful superyacht, but he also has his own private island and a jet. He purchased Musashi for $160 million USD.

SEVEN SEAS | Steven Spielberg

2010 Oceanco 282 | Steven Spielberg is a director and film producer. You might know him from his classic films like Jaws and ET. His estimated net worth is $3.7 billion USD. His mega yacht, Seven Seas, was launched in 2010 by Oceanco and is 282 feet long. The yacht has an estimated value of $200 million USD and is named after his seven children. Seven Seas can accommodate 12 guests in six cabins. She has a crew of 26. The designers Nuvolari Lenard and Azure Naval Architects are responsible for the beautiful interior design. She is powered by two MTU engines that will bring her to a top speed of 20 knots. Seven seas are not available for yacht charter nor is it for sale. Ex-England football star and Inter Miami owner David Beckham has been revealed as the owner of a 28 metre Riva Argo 90 . Named after Beckham's iconic football shirt number, Seven was launched in October 2021 and constructed in GRP. Studio Officina Italiana Design penned the yacht both inside and out, while Ferretti Engineering Department oversaw her naval architecture. The 19.2 metre yacht is a crossover of the two brands and designed to satisfy owners who enjoy superyachts and supercars. McGregor’s yacht features a distinctive gold hull paint and will feature the same materials as a Lamborghini supercar. Inspired by Lamborghini’s Siàn FKP 37 model, Tecnomar For Lamborghini features an aerodynamic profile and special “carbon skin”.

Viva a Vida owned by Tom Brady

NFL superstar Tom Brady took delivery of a 16 metre custom cruiser from Dutch builder Wajer towards the end of 2020 after signing a $50 million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The quarterback is clearly a keen fan of the Wajer yachts after he recently announced he had commissioned a larger mode, the Wajer 77. The Wajer 55S, christened Viva a Vida , sports a baby blue hull and is powered by three 435hp Volvo Penta engines guaranteeing a wild ride with speeds in excess of 40 knots. A walkaround centre console allows guests to make the most of the deck space available with stowage for SeaBobs and other toys concealed beneath the aft stairway. Below deck, the Wajer 55S offers accommodation for four. Other cool features include push-button fenders and an extendable swim platform. The 55S is the souped-up version of its older sibling, the Wajer 55 , and comes from the boards of Dutch design studio Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design .

Fashion designer Giorgio Armani has recently celebrated 40 years of life at sea  and of course the fashion icon has a suitably stylish yacht. Enter the 65 metre Codecasa yacht Main , owned by Giorgio Armani, which has been designed inside and out with input from Armani. The exterior of the yacht is in an unusual dark green colour, which suits the angular, military-inspired exterior lines. Inside, the yacht has a muted palette and features wow factors in a spiral staircase, gym, cinema and guest accommodation for 12.

Vendetta owned by Billy Joel

The modern classic commuter yacht Vendetta is just one of the many yachts that Billy Joel has owned. The "Piano Man" is a yacht fanatic, to the extent that he's even a celebrity yacht designer . Designed by Doug Zurn, the 17 metre Vendetta was created to be a true replica of the classic gentleman's commuter launches that were popularised in the 1920s for their quick speed to run down the Long Island Sound and into New York City. True to the intended form of the vessels, Billy Joel told BOAT International  that he has used the yacht to run from his home in Long Island to the City to perform in a concert. At one point, Billy Joel owned five yachts, including 29 metre Inace explorer yacht Audacious (re-named Miss Sarah J ) ,  which he converted to house a few of his motorcycles. Infinity owned by NBA star Tony Parker

In December 2018, Turkish yard AvA Yachts announced that it had sold the second hull in its 35 metre Kando 110 series to NBA star Tony Parker and the yacht was delivered two years later. Named Infinity , the steel and aluminium full displacement yacht will feature a bulbous bow and has been designed in-house. The 340GT yacht will accommodate 12 guests in six cabins with crew quarters for six including a separate captain’s double cabin. The four-decked yacht will feature a “light, contemporary interior décor” chosen by the basketball star and his wife, who are said to have put the yard through a rigorous selection process before choosing AvA for their new build.

Freedom owned by Roberto Cavalli

Much secrecy surrounded the construction of fashion designer Roberto Cavalli’s yacht until it was delivered in 2018. Built by Italian shipyard Cerri Cantieri Navali , the 27-metre Freedom was designed by Tommaso Spadolini in collaboration with her owner. According to Cavalli, the inspiration for the yacht’s design was the aesthetic of batman’s superhero batmobile. This explains the severe lines, jet black exterior and tinted windows which make up the yacht’s distinctive appearance. on board, Cavalli’s signature animal-print furnishings adorn the cabins and saloons. Freedom can accommodate six guests and three crew members and has two dining areas on board. Powered by three water jet engines, Freedom’s moderate size means that she can reach a top speed of 40 knots.

Amphitrite formerly owned by J. K. Rowling and Johnny Depp

It was reported in January 2016 that Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling had bought classic superyacht Amphitrite . Previously known as Vajoliroja , this was once Johnny Depp's yacht and named after a blend of his name and the names of his ex-wife Vanessa Paradis and their two children Lilly-Rose and Jack. The yacht was once again listed for sale in September 2016 with an asking price of €17.5 million and eventually sold in July 2017 to an undisclosed buyer.

Believe the tabloids, and you might think that it's U2's frontman Bono that owns this yacht. But it's actually U2's The Edge who owns superyacht Cyan . The 48.71 metre motor yacht was launched by Italian builder Codecasa in 1997 but has been kept in like new condition and is now available to charter with Burgess . The yacht's crew have very cool uniforms befitting a rockstar's boat, and Cyan is also known to have one of the best outdoor cinemas found on a superyacht . She accommodates 10 guests in a Franco & Anna Della Role interior.

Va Bene owned by Eric Clapton

Another musician with a passion for yachting is Eric Clapton. Superyacht Va Bene is owned by Eric Clapton, although it is currently listed for sale with Burgess , and it's also reported that he owns the aptly named yacht  Blue Guitar . The 46.51 metre motor yacht Va Bene was launched in 1992 by Cornelissen . She features exterior design by the A Group and interiors and naval architecture by Richard Hein . The semi-displacement, tri-deck yacht enjoyed a refit in 2008 and hosts 12 guests in comfortable accommodations. She also reaches a top speed of 18 knots powered by twin Caterpillar engines.

Innovators in Boating - Smoker Craft Inc. Intertwines Two Families & Five Generations of Success

Today, Smoker Craft Inc. is arguably the largest manufacturer of aluminum fishing and pleasure boats with five well known and respected brands: Smoker Craft , Starcraft , Sylvan , SunChaser , and Starweld . Together they offer literally hundreds of models that appeal to nearly any boater in a diverse marketplace.

It all started almost a century and a quarter ago. And yet, the descendants of the families that started the brand are still in charge today. There is virtually no other boatbuilder that can make the claim of family longevity, perseverance, dedication, and business acumen in an industry that is known for its ups and downs. Those family names, Schrock and Smoker, have built an almost century-long partnership with fourth and fifth generation family members still actively involved.

In 1903, Arthur E. Schrock started working at the Star Tank Company which manufactured galvanized steel tanks for the railroad and agricultural industries in Middlebury, Indiana. The company sidelined into galvanized steel boats, found success, and became the Star Tank and Boat Company. Schrock bought into the company and when the owner died in 1926, Arthur Schrock purchased the rest of the business and changed its name to Starcraft and concentrated solely on manufacturing boats. Arthur Schock died in 1966 at age 85.

Arthur’s son Harold Schrock, born in 1915, started at Starcraft by first hand painting the boats until he worked his way through all aspects of manfucaturing. After graduating from Goshen College, Harold started full-time at Starcraft in sales, then worked up to the General Manager, then eventually became president of the company. Following World War II when aluminum once again became readily available for non-military applications, it was Harold who pioneered its use for boatbuilding in place of the wood and steel mostly seen at the time. Harold became known as “the father of the aluminum boat business.” Starcraft by then had moved to Goshen, Indiana only a few miles away from Middlebury.

Aluminum proved to be strong as a boat material, easy to form, and of course much lighter than alternatives. The boats were easy to transport, easy to store, easy to power with the developing outboard motor business, and easy to trailer behind the vehicles of the day. For all of those reasons, they were also easy to launch and retrieve even at the most underdeveloped launch ramps. With the increased in disposable income during the boom years following the war, sales of aluminum boats skyrocketed.

Starcraft grew and prospered. Recognizing another growing trend and wanting to capitalize, in 1958 Starcraft started fabricating fiberglass runabouts to cater to more of the pleasure boat market. To this day Starcraft continues to produce both fiberglass and aluminum boats. In 1965, Starcraft introduced the Deep-Vee hull design to aluminum boats which increased their rough water comfort and performance capabilities. It started building pontoon boats as well.

Starcraft leveraged its knowledge of aluminum and cabinetry fabrication by entering the exploding camper, RV, and van conversion markets as well. They also expanded their aluminum boat model lineup considerably with its American, Holiday, Islander cuddy cabins, and Chieftain full express cruiser models, all of which became popular, especially in the Canadian marketplace. In 1969, Harold Schrock sold Starcraft to the Bangor Punta corporate conglomerate that was accumulating boat manufacturers at the time.

Meanwhile, in nearby New Paris, Indiana, the Smoker Lumber Company, founded by John Smoker, sidelined into making oars and paddles, created the Smoker Oar and Paddle Company. By the mid-1920’s it had become the largest such manufacturer in the world. It had for years supplied the manual power for Starcraft boats.

John Smoker’s grandson Byron Smoker joined the company and by the mid-1950’s, again by exploiting the benefits of aluminum, expanded the product line to include mobile homes and camper trailers. Then in 1963, it began producing its own line of aluminum boats under the Smoker Craft moniker while still manufacturing wooden oars and paddles right through to 1988.

In nearby Wolcottville, Indiana by the shores of Sylvan Lake, the Sylvan Boat Company, established in 1948, became an innovator and leader in houseboat and pontoon boat design. Sylvan eventually became the first manufacturer to offer pontoon boats with coloured side panels (fences), and also pioneered the development of high performance pontoons. Having just sold his Starcraft company, Harold Schrock purchased Sylvan in 1969. Later in the 70’s, Harold then purchased a controlling interest in Smoker Craft from Byron Smoker, grandson of founder John Smoker.

In the meantime, Starcraft went through several corporate owners until it was purchased in the late 1980’s by Brunswick Corporation, which also included Mercury Marine in its stable. By the mid-1990’s, Brunswick Corporation decided to sell Starcraft once again and this time, Doug Schrock and his sisters Cinda, Susie, and Sara, the children of Harold Schrock who had sold Starcraft and grandchildren of Starcraft founder Arthur Schrock, purchased Starcraft from Brunswick. The RV side of Starcraft had been divested to Jayco of Middlebury, Indiana which to this day, is one of the leading manufacturers of campers, fifth wheel RV’s, and motorhomes. So once again, Starcraft was all boats, both fiberglass and aluminum.

Over the years, Starcraft, Smoker Craft, and Sylvan have been leaders in aluminum boat production. Adding to Starcraft’s revolutionary Deep-Vee aluminum hull design and Sylvan’s high performance pontoon development, both Starcraft and Smoker Craft met the surging demand for higher horsepower fishing boats in the booming walleye (pickerel) fishing market. In the mid-70's, Smoker Craft introduced its tri-hull Vega models offering a dry and stable ride suited to both cruising and fishing.

Starcraft introduced its legendary Power-Trac hull design in 1991 specifically to accommodate higher horsepower outboard motors. Smoker Craft introduced its Hydra-Lift Reverse Chine Hull design to drive water toward the boat’s stern to improve hole shots and on-plane performance. Later it developed pinch-free seating and introduced the Yarblow system of storage compartment ventilation. Meanwhile Sylvan introduced RPT ands SPX tubes to offer better pontoon boat handling and to accommodate increased horsepower to satisfy the growing demands of tow sports.

Today, the Schrock and Smoker families are united in a unique family-owned boat company with five brands operating under the Smoker Craft Inc. umbrella in New Paris, Indiana. Harold Schrock, son of founder Arthur Schrock, died in 2012. Harold’s three daughters, Cinda McKinney, Susie Graff, and Sara Barrett are all members of the Board of Directors of Smoker Craft Inc. with Cinda being Chairman of the Board.

Sara Barrett’s son, Peter Barrett, great grandson of founder Arthur Schrock, is currently Executive Vice-President as well as Senior Vice-President of Marketing and Corporate Development. Doug Smoker, son of Byron Smoker and great grandson of John Smoker is President of Smoker Craft Inc. and Phil Smoker, son of Doug Smoker is Vice-President of Sales.
