2024 BOTY SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

yacht club 55

J24 FLEET 55 JACKSONVILLE, FL

Wednesday night sailing faqs.

Most of the adult sailors at the Florida Yacht Club sail the J-24, the world’s most popular one-design racing sailboat. (J refers to J Boats, the manufacturer; 24 is the length in feet; and one-design is a fancy way of saying all the boats are kept the same.) Recognized as Fleet 55, we have an annual competition for the Boat of the Year that is won by the crew that is the best at racing, traveling to races, and even showing up to race for fun. Most newbies come out on these more-relaxed “participation nights.” One Wednesday a month is a “points night.”

Behind the parking lot opposite the yacht club’s main building you’ll see the parked J-24s and the big blue hoist used to launch them. Park in the lot and head for the hoist. The sooner after 5 p.m. you present yourself the more likely you are to find a boat that needs someone. Once you do, offer to help out however you can. Experienced sailors can help rig the boat. Inexperienced folks can help carry sails and gear or even fetch ice from the machine. Just keep asking, “Is there anything I can do now?” If you’re running late, let someone know. Launching all these boats quickly is a bit of a dance, so waiting around isn’t really an option.

There’s the obvious: a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottle, soft-soled shoes, a rain jacket if you like and your personal life jacket if you want. Of course, check the the weather and dress for it. And the not so obvious: a six-pack of beer, an armful of Gatorades or some snacks, especially once you become a regular. It’s a small contribution compared with that of the boat owner, who bears the costs of club dues, fleet dues, boat and sail maintenance, and dry storage.

Beach Club & Restaurant - st-tropez

The original beach club of St Tropez

Restaurants abound along Pampelonne Beach, but those in the know make a beeline for Le Club 55. Classy, discreet and effortlessly chic, the legendary establishment is one of St Tropez’s oldest beach clubs, with infinite appeal among the rich and famous.

A simple fishing hut in the early 1950s, Le Club 55 was adopted as a canteen by the crew filming And God Created Woman , the Bardot movie that put St Tropez on the world stage in 1956.

Today a forest of bamboo surrounds a typically Provencal beach bungalow, with white canopies and a lavish beach club jutting all the way to the Mediterranean . Le Club 55 even has its own wooden jetty, luring well-heeled travelers away from their superyachts anchored off-shore.

Arrive by tender and make the ultimate entrance as other patrons cannot help but take notice, whether they’re sipping Cristal on loungers by the water’s edge or feasting on seafood in the main restaurant.

Infinite appeal among the rich and famous

yacht club 55

Classy, discreet and effortlessly chic, the legendary establishment is one of St Tropez’s oldest beach clubs

Tables dressed simply in white create a refined setting in which to dine on simple yet exquisite Mediterranean fare. Appetizers like tuna carpaccio, breaded calamari and Beluga Caviar are some of the best on the beach, while heartier entrees like the beef filet and pasta dishes are aptly portioned without sending people back to their loungers with bloated bellies.

An array of lunch salads offering seafood twists to traditional field greens and market-fresh produces are by far the most popular, however. There are two sittings for lunch, the second of which is better for a longer, relaxed experience on Pampelonne Beach during your St Tropez yacht charter .

A look back: Cape Coral Yacht Club turns 55 this week

Membership to the Yacht Club was automatic with the purchase of a home site.

Most community developers promise to add amenities when the population of the development reaches a given number. The developers of Cape Coral, however, began digging a yacht basin almost simultaneously with the construction of the first houses at Redfish Point. The Rosen brothers’ belief was that, to quote a famous line from Field of Dreams , “If you build it, they will come.”

A look at veteran Dick Sayers' lasting impact on Cape Coral, Lee County

1. Over a period of years , beginning in 1960, GALC built a $1 million complex that included the yacht basin and the 10,000 square-foot Yacht & Racquet Club, a swimming pool, youth center, tennis courts, riverside beach, etc. The whole thing was, pure and simple, a sales tool.

2. Part of the complex was a 5,000-square-foot building that the sales team referred to as the “Getaway Building.” Prospective buyers in the “Fly and Buy” program would be bused from the Nautilus Motel to the Getaway Building on the morning of their departure. The transfer accomplished two things: the visitors got a last look at the magnificent yacht club, with a reminder that membership in the club was automatic with the purchase of a home site; the housekeeping staff at the Nautilus could get the rooms cleaned in time for the next busload of flyers ‘n buyers.

3. According to then yacht club manager, Paul Sanborn, this conveyor system of moving people in a continual flow from airport to Nautilus Motel, through each phase of an entirely orchestrated visit, and from Nautilus to Getaway back to Page Field, was “a very intricate thing.” And it worked.

4. For many years, the yacht club was the only facility on the Cape that could accommodate large numbers of people and every public or big private affair in Cape Coral, including church services, were held there.

5. After incorporation, GAC sold the complex to the new city of Cape Coral. Known today as the Yacht Club Community Park, it is managed by the City of Cape Coral Parks & Recreation division.

Take a look at what architects pitch for a redesigned Cape Coral Yacht Club

yacht club 55

New details, photos, and a video have emerged on the proposed changes to the Cape Coral Yacht Club Community Park, changing it from an Old Florida feel to a 'Key West' vibe.

The city plans to present these updates on the Yacht Club at this week's committee of the whole meeting at 9 a.m. Wednesday in council chambers at 1015 Cultural Park Blvd.

Here's what we know.

Yacht Club changes explained

Cape Coral's  Yacht Club Community Park , which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has served as a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s, built and open just a few years after  the city's inception in 1957 by brothers Jack and Leonard Rosen .

In 2018, voters approved a $60 million expansion of the city's parks and amenities through the Parks and Recreation General Obligation (GO) Bond. Part of that was intended for the Yacht Club.

The Cape Coral City Council originally planned to close and begin work on renovations for the park in  2021 .

But then Hurricane Ian struck the city on Sept. 28, 2022, delaying the project with the council eventually opting to revamp the whole area, with the city pointing toward the  high cost of repairs and being over FEMA's 50% rule  as justification for moving forward with new buildings and amenities.

Longtime residents and former city officials opposed the plans - however, they could not sway the council to change its mind on the new plans.

What's featured in the new Yacht Club?

The  current plans  include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new 14,500-square-foot resort-style pool.

Current parking at the park; including for boats, vehicles, and boat trailers, amounts to 551 total spaces.

The proposed changes would bring a four-story garage with approximately 685 parking spaces, 15 surface spaces at the main building, 46 boat trailers, and 158 boat slip spaces - totaling 904 parking spaces.

The new two-story community center would have 47,000 square feet and include a new ballroom, concession, history room, exterior balcony, storage and meeting space, and a multi-purpose hall.

Previous discussions estimate the cost of the project to be as much  as $100 million .

Demolition has begun

Cape Coral has already begun the work toward these changes as demolition started this month.

The city will demolish the main buildings and attached amenities of the Yacht Club, including the ballroom building, the Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, pool, and harbormaster.

Johnson-Laux Construction, a full-service construction management firm that operates out of Winter Garden, has been contracted to demolish and deconstruct the Yacht Club for $987,716.04.

The firm is also tasked with  preserving a portion  of the old ballroom building, which includes interior ceiling beams, stonework, a fountain, and interior doors.

Construction will  not affect the beach area.

What's next? When's the completion?

A public meeting to review and showcase current Yacht Club designs will be held on May 7.

The city is still in the design phase and has no estimated timeframe for completion.
