With over 1200 members SYC is one of the most premier and active Sailing Clubs in the South West. Our Sailing Programme runs from the beginning of March to the end of December each year.

We have six regular Club Series throughout the year and nine Open Meetings. It is said that Merlin Rocket Week is the jewel in the Yacht Clubs crown, attracting 120 teams from across the country and placing the town at the centre of the sailing worlds attentions for one week in July.

The Town Regatta and Salcombe Yacht Club Regattas are hugely popular and are the highlights of the Salcombe Calendar year.

The following boats regularly race:

  • Salcombe Yawl
  • Laser (All Rigs)
  • Merlin Rocket
  • National 12

The Cruiser section of the Club has flourished in the last ten years in particular. With Rallies to favourite west country destinations as well as passages in company across the Channel. There is regular Cruiser Racing in the Range on a Sunday and a weekend Regatta in the Autumn.

We have two Cadet sessions each week, Cadet Racing programmes with pathways to excellence leading to some Cadets competing in the Regional and National RYA Zone Squads.

A Ladies that Launch weekly morning session has enabled many sailors to get afloat and gain confidence in the quiet of the midweek estuary.

We also have a competitive midweek evening race series during the Spring/Summer months with a social 'Sailors Bowl' supper afterwards in the Clubhouse.

Adapting to suit our members needs has been key in trying to help more people sail and enjoy being on the estuary.

SYC is a thriving RYA training centre. Not only on the water sailing stages, but powerboat and safety boat instruction. Together with the RYA, First Aid and shore-based Coastal Navigation courses are run in our beautiful SYC Chart Room.

And of course, SYC has a very active calendar with a beautiful bar overlooking the Salcombe Estuary serving the cheapest pint in town! We have regular themed suppers, rambles, talks and pop-ups along with a very inviting menu available from Sandwiches to Steak & Chips!

Everything Wayne Rooney needs to know about Salcombe

W ayne Rooney’s glittering career at Manchester United made him a fixture of the North West, not to mention English footballing royalty. From their £20 million mansion, he and his wife of 16 years, Coleen, practically invented the “Cheshire set”, a community of footballers whose luxury mega-mansions dot the county’s countryside.

But the 38-year-old’s appointment as manager of Plymouth Argyle has brought with it rumours of a change of scene, with the Rooneys said to be planning to decamp to Salcombe, in Devon.

Dubbed Chelsea-on-Sea, it is Britain’s most expensive seaside town, with an average property costing more than £970,000 .

That’s something of a snip for the Rooneys, whose net worth is estimated by Forbes to be around £1 billion, bolstered by Wayne’s record-breaking exploits on the pitch and Coleen’s lucrative Disney+ series documenting her involvement in the infamous Wagatha Christie case.

Renowned for its beautiful golden beaches , the town is home to just 2,000 people but attracts 25,000 visitors every summer. Here’s what the Rooneys need to know should they opt to settle in.

The fashion

Coleen is known for her love of designer labels but may have something of a culture shock if she thinks high-end fashion will fly in Salcombe.

“There’s no culture of ‘dressing up’. People are sniffy about that sort of thing,” one resident tells The Telegraph . “Coleen would do better in Birkenstocks or flip-flops, shorts and a jumper. Fleeces are a year-round winner.”

For a man well-accustomed to wearing shorts, Wayne himself will feel at home in the local “uniform” of deck shoes, short-trousers and a Quba sailing jacket (which sell for upwards of £250). Schoffel gilets are a must, and wearing swimming trunks to the pub isn’t frowned upon – Salcombe locals tell The Telegraph the more worn and sea-salted they are, the better.

If the Rooneys favour a more casual look, they’d do well to remember that both Jack Wills and Crew Clothing opened their first shops in the town. Preppy, sailing-inspired ensembles are very much the order of the day among many of the tourists who flock to the area for the Summer season, so popular that some locals derisively refer to “grockles” (visitors) as “the Crew Klux Clan”.

The overlords

If the Rooneys play their cards right, they could find themselves making connections with the very highest echelons of British society. Salcombe’s picturesque harbour, home to the town’s annual summer regatta, is part of the Duchy of Cornwall on lease to the Salcombe Harbour Authority. The current Duke? Prince William.

Given the Prince is the President of the Football Association, he may well have plenty to discuss with Rooney, who sits second to Harry Kane on the national side’s all-time record goalscorers list. Both also have children of a similar age, with Kai, 13, Klay, 10, Kit, seven, and Cass, five, expected to up sticks to the south-west along with their father.

The celebrities

Over the summer, swathes of second-home owners descend on Salcombe in their thousands. A number of celebrities are thought to be among their ranks.

Mary Berry is thought to have a property in the area and is one of an eclectic cast of stars to have been spotted in Salcombe over the years. Gordon Ramsay, Ben Shephard, Vernon Kay, Tess Daly and Little Mix’s Jesy Nelson have also been pictured in the town.

“I was lucky enough to move to Salcombe when I was 13-years-old and my family had a successful fashion boutique in the town centre,” says Francesca Hull, the former Made in Chelsea star. “We would always expect our regulars: Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster, Gaby Roslin, and Daniel Mays and his family.”

And if the Rooneys run out of fellow celebs to rub shoulders with in Salcombe itself, they could always introduce themselves to Kate Bush, who lives across the harbour in East Portlemouth.

The only club worth joining is the iconic Salcombe Yacht Club. With some 900 members and a history spanning back more than 125 years, it is the epicentre of social life in the town. Membership offers access to a range of facilities and perks, including drinks in the bar and dining on the clubhouse’s panoramic terrace, perched high above the Salcombe-Kingsbridge Estuary.

The Rooneys would also gain access to races and regattas, and have the option of cadet membership for the Rooney’s four children. “My husband and son George both sail so we spend a lot of time at Salcombe Yacht Club, it’s a great way to get to know the locals and the cadets training is brilliant,” advises Hayley Reynolds, the founder of local PR agency RAW Food and Drink PR.

If Coleen hopes to make a real splash, she’d be well-advised to attend the weekly Ladies Who Launch sessions, held on Thursdays, to learn the ropes on one of the club’s boats. The couple might also wish to consider enrolling for a formal Royal Yachting Association training course, offered at a discounted price to members of the club.

Food and drink

The Salcombe Brewery tour could provide an ideal team-building experience for Wayne and his new Plymouth Argyle squad, while in the autumn, the Rooneys can look forward to seafood aficionado Mitch Tonks opening a new outlet of his beloved south-coast restaurant chain Rockfish beside the Brewery’s new Taphouse.

If they’re prepared to eat like locals, they will love the Winking Prawn Beach Cafe & BBQ on North Sands: a beachside eatery that offers stunning views out to sea. Another favourite local haunt is The Ferry, a pub with sweeping views across the estuary – once visited by the King and Queen.

But the family should avoid The Victoria, at least to begin with: it’s where locals go to hide from the influx of tourists. Once they’ve settled in, however, Coleen might find the pub’s “man-creche” useful.

With their gaggle of children, the Rooneys are also likely to become well acquainted with Cranch’s Sweet Shop: a traditional candy pink striped fixture on Fore Street, the town’s main thoroughfare, that still features jars of penny sweets and Devon fudge. Salcombe Dairy, on Island Street, will also be a must-visit; offering up award-winning ice cream, sorbets, chocolates and truffles.

However, when dining at home, Wayne and Coleen will have to make sure to stock up well in advance. There’s no local Waitrose, nevermind a Tesco. Instead they can choose from a Spar and a small Co-op, which at the height of summer almost always sells out of BBQ supplies by lunchtime at the latest.

The aforementioned Island Street has been referred to as Salcombe’s answer to Carnaby Street. It is a magnet for artisanal businesses, from boat builders to chocolate makers, ceramics, leather goods and a thriving collection of handcrafted gin, rum and beer producers.

If Wayne’s wardrobe is not already kitted out with Jack Wills hoodies and Helly Hansen sailing gear, then he is in luck. The town is also replete with offerings from the likes of Fat Face and Sea Salt. Coleen, meanwhile, can choose from various ritzy gift and homeware shops, including Will Bees Bespoke, the handmade bag company that opened in Salcombe 14 years ago.

The hobbies

“If I were Wayne, I would invest in a small boat, nothing too flash, and get out and enjoy our stunning coastline,” advises Angus Lugsdin, the co-founder and director of Salcombe Gin. “It is the hidden boltholes in and around Salcombe that are the most special.

“For me, time on the water, in the water or underwater are what Salcombe is about, from trips to beaches that can only be accessed by boat with the family, to fishing for bass and evening cruises by boat following the leading lights into the estuary, or BBQs with a sunset and evening dip at South Milton Sands.”

But if that isn’t enough to keep the new Plymouth manager interested, Lugsdin says he would be “more than welcome at the distillery”.

“Both he and Coleen could visit our gin school where they could forage the stunning coastline for botanicals then make their own bespoke gin,” he says.

And should he still be found wanting for activities, Rooney might wish to try his hand at another sport altogether when Salcombe hosts its annual beach touch rugby tournament in aid of the Salcombe RNLI on the August Bank Holiday weekend.

I know many clubs, not all sailing clubs, who have a member and non-member price. Needless to say the ones that have differential pricing only get visited once; unless a member buys the drinks at the bar.

johnalison

My club has two prices, but one for normal club use including visitors, and the other for when the club is hired out for functions.

Not sure why you think you should pay the same price as members whose subscriptions subsidise their prices, nor why you think the club should care if you don't return if the only reason you are there is to take advantage of cheaper prices.

Our club has a membership card which you can pre-load with money to be spent in the club. The fact that the club has the money in advance plus the £400 annual membership gives members a 10% reduction on bar bills when paid by club membership card. As these payments cover the running costs of the bar its understandable why the drinks could be less. If you want to take advantage of the members contributions then perhaps you are the sort that would not be welcome. Likewise there are many that don't want to join any sailing club often to save money yet happy to advantage of facilities that others have paid for. No one objects to visiting yachtsmen from other sailing clubs.

skyflyer

Is the OP a member of any club though? Surely the point of reciprocal membership and pricing is that it's swings and roundabouts. For every visiting yachtsperson in your club drinking beer at a price that you have subsidised, one of your members is in another club drinking the beer subsidised by that club's members?

Not a member but want to complain about how a club is run? My club has a similar system and I think it's a good way of benefitting members and preventing non members taking advantage of those benefits - sounds like it has worked in your case...

I usually visit other clubs - if ' arriving by water ' so as to use the showers and maybe meal facilities, even I with my half Scottish ancestry hadn't thought about cut-price beer ! I've always found Salcombe YC very friendly.

Perhaps they don't want the additional turnover? Many years ago I attended a dinner dance at a non sailing club, a total of 150 people with about 50 members of the club, where we found that the members got "bar discount". The following year they lost the event and several thousand pounds in turnover. Their business, their choice.

Our club has a card scheme which members can load with cash to pay for bar drinks and food. This helps the bar staff enormously as it is far quicker than handling cash and change or normal card trasactions with PINs, it also serves to identify members so visitors can be asked - if the staff remember - "have you signed the visitors book?". Using the card also gives members a small discount off the standard bar prices, if members don't bother to use the card they pay the full price, the discount is chiefly to encourage use of the cards. From the club finances perspective the cards help as there is a balance in the club account from all the cash on members' cards and as you have to top up either with actual cash or using a debit card there is a big reduction in credit card fees.
