Fast Track Yachtmaster Professional Sail Training Course

The Hamble School of Yachting fast track Professional Sail Training (PST) course is designed to progress an inexperienced sailor to a fully qualified professional standard.

Hamble School of Yachting follows the globally recognised RYA certification programme that takes students to commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmaster Offshore level - the gold standard in sailing qualifications. The PST course is also a great option for anyone looking for a life-changing experience; either following retirement, during a gap year, sabbatical or taking leisure sailing to the next level.

Why Hamble?

SETTING QUALITY FOUNDATIONS

Whether you’re looking to embark on a career in the sailing industry, taking a break from work or looking for a new challenge of long-distance sailing in retirement, it is important to set solid foundations for your journey ahead.

Hamble School of Yachting has a reputation in the industry for the high quality of sailors that come from its courses which provides a valuable head-start when seeking employment.

HIGH CALIBRE INSTRUCTORS Hamble School of Yachting employs only the best teaching staff. All instructors are hand-picked for their ability to communicate, their knowledge and sense of humour! Instructors receive ongoing professional development from the Hamble School of Yachting via a programme delivered by the Chief Instructor. Very few schools adopt this policy.

STRICT INTAKE LIMIT Hamble School of Yachting can offer a choice of different yachts on which to sail and a dedicated teaching block equipped with the latest computer and audio visual technology.

Numbers of students on the PST course are strictly limited to an absolute maximum of ten on each intake. This allows incredibly high quality supervision and monitoring of training and enables students to get much more out of that vital contact time with each instructor.

THE VERY BEST PROGRAMME The programme is purposefully organised in such a way that each week has a clear and dedicated set of goals.

Students are debriefed after each task, and at the end of each week, by the instructor and

Chief Instructor. This enables the school to identify student strengths and weaknesses at a very early stage and ensure a personal action plan is put into place to build up skills accordingly.

AN ALL-ROUND EDUCATION Hamble School of Yachting does not try to enrol its students on a ticket collecting exercise for a bewildering array of different courses. This course is focused and carefully designed to turn out high quality sailors with a good degree of all-round seamanship skills.

The school believes there is no substitute for hands on experience and students spend 72 days of the total 98 days tuition at sea learning the skills of their trade. The weeks spent on practical sailing are carefully divided between skipper development and mileage building to destinations in the English Channel, and “drills and skills” weeks closer to home.

THE HAMBLE TOUCHES Hamble School of Yachting is so committed to delivering the best possible experience that it invites prospective PST students to join the team for a weekend of sailing, free of charge. This gives the opportunity for students to meet school’s friendly faces, see how the school operates and chat to the brilliant instructors about their ambitions. It also allows the team to ensure the course is right for the student. For those with more experience it might be suitable to start at module two or three and this will be assessed over the weekend.

***** Stars

Roger has a tremendous wealth of experience and knowledge, about both sailing and teaching, which he brings to running his courses. I thoroughly enjoyed our yachtmasters course, which was both challenging and rewarding in equal measure. Roger makes the courses fun at the same time as being able to meet the needs of each individual on the course. I feel confident about, and look forward to putting into practise, the things we have learned. I highly recommend the courses that Jolly Roger offers. Thank you Roger!

Howard Kay  via Google Reviews

Roger was an excellent teacher on our recent virtual Yachtmaster theory course. Whilst I’ve sailed for years the way he taught retained my interest whilst also informed both new, theoretical sailors and one of the other students looking to get his commercial ticket. Highly recommend and, once normality returns, intend to meet Roger in person to refresh my VHF knowledge.

Our teaching will take place normally at Hythe Community Centre. http://www.hythecommunity.org.uk. or Hythe Marina, both are only a two-minute walk from Hythe Ferry which gives easy access to the mainline railway station in Southampton. There is a café in the centre, or alternatively, there are sandwich shops and coffee shops close by. We will provide tea and coffee, but please bring or expect to buy some lunch. We will only have 30 minutes break for lunch as well as a coffee break in the morning and afternoon. If you require a list of B&B accommodation in Hythe please feel free to ask.

RYA OCEAN YACHTMASTER SHOREBASED THEORY COURSE RATIOS

The RYA allow centres to run with up-to 12 students on this course. While this works for night school we find it is far too many for our 5-day and weekend courses so we limit the class size to 8, which means you each get a double desk to spread out at and can access more of the instructor’s time. In reality the class size is often smaller and we run with as few as two students.  The classroom is equipped with 4 sextants and a huge selection of ocean passage planning books and publications.

WHY CHOOSE CHIEFTAIN TRAINING FOR THIS COURSE?

We have four RYA Ocean Yachtmaster Instructors on our team.

Our classroom is equipped with four sextants and all of the ocean charts and publications that will be discussed on your course. As with all of our training, we ensure you learn using the real thing rather than pictures on a screen.

Our Principal has been teaching this course for 20 years, our lead astro Instructir even . His first time pass rate for Yachtmaster Ocean candidates who have gone on to take the MCA/RYA Ocean exam is 100% (so far). While we can not guarantee you a pass, we have so far achieved this every time.

RYA Yachtmaster Ocean

IS THE OCEAN YACHTMASTER SHOREBASED THEORY COURSE INVIGILATED?

If you take the classroom course then the written paper is automatically invigilated. If you join the online course you will complete the same assessment paper as our classroom students. For the majority of our students this paper does not require invigilation. However if you intend to use the certificate as entry into the Chief Mate or Master 200 certification route then you will require invigilation. This does not have to be carried out here in Southampton, we can arrange for invigilation with an RYA Instructor near you (for which there may be a fee).

This course will enable students to safely plan and undertake day passages in familiar waters, with an introduction to making a night passage, always returning to a port of safe haven. This is the gateway course to chartering yachts anywhere in the UK and the world. With the skills learnt on the course you will have a good, solid grounding ready to start your adventures.

yachtmaster course southampton

Who is the RYA Day Skipper theory and practical combined course for:

The RYA Day Skipper Combination course is designed for anyone who has successfully completed the RYA Competent Crew and who wants to undertake the practical and theory qualification in one sitting over nine continuous days.

Successful completion qualifies students for their International Certificate of Competence (ICC), allowing them to confidently plan and complete passages around Portsmouth, Southampton and the Solent and charter yachts in the UK and abroad.

As a guide we would recommend an absolute minimum of five days (or 100 nautical miles) of tidal waters yacht sailing experience as an active crew member. This requirement is usually obtained by taking the RYA Competent Crew course. However, If you are short of a few days experience then why not try one of our sailing mile builders!

We sometimes find that students with less than this level of experience struggle to pass and complete the RYA Day Skipper Combination course.

What we cover on the course:

The RYA Day Skipper Combined (Theory & Practical) course will enable you to gain the full RYA Day Skipper qualification in just nine days. It’s the fastrack way to gain your Skippers licence.

The combined theory and practical course is completely residential and you’ll be staying aboard one of our fleet yachts for the entire course (During the theory section of the course, this is strictly subject to availability of spare yachts – Please confirm two weeks prior to the commencement of your RYA Day Skipper course). This will get you in the mindset for the course, which is quite demanding at times. You will need to spend your evenings reviewing your theory classes and reading some of the upcoming theory sections ready for the next day. You will have exercises to complete each evening to help consolidate your learning.

The RYA day skipper combined theory and practical course covers preparation for sea and the safety briefing, deck work, navigation (both traditional and electronic), pilotage into and out of ports and harbours, meteorology, rules of the road, maintenance and repair work, engines, victualing, emergency situations and actions, yacht handling under power and under sail, passage making, night sailing back to a port of safe refuge, and of course being the skipper of a vessel.

Please be aware that RYA Day Skipper Combination Courses completed in the Solent and other tidal waters are demanding. This course is held in high regard with yacht charter companies worldwide due to the challenging waters, winds, tides and busy waterways you will encounter. Courses run in the non-tidal waters of the Mediterranean are generally not accepted by the UK yacht charter industry. Our Day Skipper course also qualifies you for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

Our RYA Day Skipper Combination courses have 4 to 5 students. In some instances sharing a cabin may be required.

yachtmaster course southampton

Course formats & details:

Courses run in a single format:

  • 9 consecutive days: (Saturday to the following Sunday)

During your RYA Day Skipper (Tidal) Combination course you will cover theory and practical navigation, pilotage, boat handling, seamanship, skippering techniques, customs and sailing etiquette and the all-important berthing in marinas. You will also potentially cover rafting alongside another vessel, which is common during high season.

The course includes free accommodation aboard our immaculate, well-maintained yachts with breakfast, lunch and snacks and three evening meals onboard with one evening meal taken ashore at the students cost.

During the theory side of the course we only provide accommodation on a “bed only” basis (This is strictly subject to availability of spare yachts – Please confirm two weeks prior to your course commencing). We also include all fuel and safety kit such as lifejackets and waterproofs (Excluding footwear).

Fancy going VIP and having your own exclusive private course for you and your friends or family? You can book the whole yacht just for your own exclusive course from only £1,095 per person. Enjoy the course in style, with up to five persons on the boat being taught by one of our friendly, experienced Yachtmaster Instructors! What a way to start your sailing adventure!

Our Chief Instructor says this about the RYA Day Skipper Combination Course:

This is the best way to gain your RYA Day Skippers licence in the shortest possible timeframe. This course will give you the ability to charter a yacht in the UK or abroad.

It’s advisable to ensure that your practical sailing skills are up to scratch, as there is no time on the course for refreshing skills. You need to be able to helm the yacht, hold a course, operate winches, tack, gybe and sail the yacht into a triangular course. In short, you need to be confident of the skills you learnt on your Competent Crew course.

This course is the starting point for your skippering life. It’s all about the journey, visisting new ports, navigating in and out of them safely by day. This course will immerse you in boat life, so get involved, enjoy the banter, ask questions and have a great time. Once you complete this course, go sailing, charter a boat with friends and family.

Remember with this course that it’s a full-on nine days! So please be well-prepared for long days a a lot to learn!

We will help you as much as we can but you need to work with us to really get the most out of the full nine days. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for things  to be explained in more detail if you don’t understand them. Practice the skills in the evenings to really home your knowledge. But most of all have fun.

A fantastic weekend of sailing, almost 130 NM in all, with a relaxed, but fully engaging skipper. Great set up and brilliant on the admin. Thanks Stef, Tom et al!

I did a weeks coastal skipper course getting ready for my yacht master and I have to say it was one of the best training weeks I’ve had - our training instructor was superb, exactly the sort of person that you want. He could inspire, provide discipline and impart knowledge as well as let you learn through your own mistakes. Tom and Steph run an excellent operation there and I highly recommend it. They’re flexible and very helpful when it comes to your journey into being a qualified sailor.

If you are looking to drive a boat in European waters or the Mediterranean, it’s essential to carry the International Certificate of Competence (ICC), as this demonstrates that you are competent to charter a vessel.

NEXT STEPS AFTER POWERBOAT LEVEL 2

Once you have completed the RYA PB2 course, you will be awarded the RYA power boat licence which, alongside your ICC completion certificate, demonstrates your competence on the water. As some of the most highly commended power boat courses in the UK, the RYA powerboat courses practice techniques, manoeuvres and best practices to keep you safe.

If you are looking for further RYA powerboat courses (sometimes referred to as RYA level 2, RYA PB2 course, RYA Motorboat courses, boat driving courses in the UK, national powerboat certificate, power boat licence or Powerboat 2 course), Ocean Sports Tuition offers an extended range of RYA Powerboat Courses as well as RYA Rib Courses (also known as rib boat licence, as it is preferred by some insurers and navigation authorities that a boat owner has undergone training).

You can experience further RYA powerboat training courses through the following RYA powerboat courses:

  • RYA Tender Operator Course
  • RYA Intermediate Powerboat Course (RYA Powerboat Intermediate Course)
  • RYA Advanced Powerboat Course

On completion of the course and gaining your RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate, you can bareboat charter from us and take advantage of an exclusive discount for undertaking your training with us.  Please see our Bareboat Charter page for details.
