Amadea: Peek Inside This Amazing Superyacht

' src=

Amadea: When you think about what a superyacht should be, then a lot of luxury features will immediately spring to mind such as plush interiors, gleaming decks, rows of floor-to-ceiling windows and glass walls, as well as plenty of fun things included to keep us amused.

Nothing embodies the idea of a perfect mega-yacht more than the 106.5-metre Amadea mega-yacht, a veritable floating palace of a luxury vessel being the most detailed superyacht ever built!

The Amadea yacht was built from steel and aluminium in 2017 by German shipbuilders Lürssen, and is currently up for sale with Imperial the Monaco-based luxury yacht broker, and is looking for her next privileged owner.

However, the next lucky owner of this amazing yacht will grab themselves an absolute bargain because even though the Amadea is classed as ‘brand-used’, it has been refurbished to be in an even better condition than you would get when buying an off the peg new-build.

According to Imperial’s management team, the Amadea is a “true turn-key superyacht” because of the precise synchronisation between all parties that were responsible for creating such luxury.

So, what’s inside? Let’s take a peek inside one of the most desirable luxury yachts on the market today…

To infinity and beyond

Amadea Mega-Yacht

One of the first eye-catching features that guests will notice once they board the Amadea mega-yacht is the 10-metre mosaic-lined infinity pool that sits on the main deck created by exterior designer Espen Øino. Taking a cooling dip in this pool will really allow guests to connect with the splendour of the sea and the beautiful surroundings wherever the owner chooses to anchor the yacht.

The Amadea has a clamshell arrangement of three overlapping shell structures containing five decks that hold endless world-class features to entertain her honoured guests, including a cooling air-ventilation system to keep guests and crew cool and comfortable, a future-proof bridge and a very grand white marble central staircase fitted with red carpet that links up each deck on the yacht.

The decks contain many hidden and convertible features such as a deck with 20,000 Watts of built-in speakers, lights and lasers, and a spa pool that can be converted into a stage for live bands or DJ’s to play.

Even the cinema on the bridge deck can be retracted when not in use, but when in use you can really get into the zone with the film you are watching because the two main sofas have D-Box motion control, allowing you to tip and move around mimicking the motion seen on-screen. The cinema even has its own popcorn machine!

Designer interior layout

Every detail of the interior décor has been carefully chosen. From the custom-built furniture to the matching books and ornaments, interior designer Zuretti left nothing to chance and pulled out all the stops to over-deliver a high level combination of chic comfort and class.

Amadea Mega-Yacht

Zuretti was given a brief from the original owner asking for an authentic classic representation with the integration of classic furniture from the 18th century. You really get this feel as you walk through the yacht with alcohol, books and accessories being a key part of the interior design.

Øino and Zuretti collaborated extremely well to deliver external and interior designs that complement each other perfectly. Cosy and intimate nooks are not in short supply on board with plenty of recessed seating kitted out with cushions and sun loungers in warm, organic tones.

There are very eye-catching features to take in, such as the hand-painted Michelangelo clouds above the dining table, backlit bottles of whiskies, brandies and rums behind the bars, and the stainless steel, onyx panels and deck motifs.

All play and no work?

Despite the Amadea mega-yacht being unmistakably built for pleasure and leisure, the business needs of the guests have not been overlooked. The multi-functional bridge deck offers a private space for guests to conduct digital business meetings or to catch up with the news through the onboard cinema.

The main remit for the Amadea’s general arrangement was to deliver a luxury yacht with plenty of space, privacy and intimacy that meets with all purposes for both business and pleasure.

Amadea Mega-Yacht

Other unique features you can find aboard include a helipad, outdoor firepit, gym, beauty centre, four Sea Doo watercraft, a vast art deco-style albatross off the bow that was created by Netherlands artist Willem Lenssinck, a ‘guests galley’ on the top deck that offers guests the opportunity to cook their own food with a grill area, copper pots and pans, a live lobster tank, and use of a winter patio dining area.

There is even a storage area containing a teppanyaki grill, a rotisserie and a hog-roaster. The yacht also has a crane to lift the equipment overboard so you can moor up and take your party to the beach!

Launched in 2016, motor yacht AMADEA is an imposing 106-metre mega-yacht with beautiful fluid lines and design. She was built by the world-renowned German shipbuilder Lurssen with exteriors designed by Espen Oeino (Espen Øino International). Previously known as Project Mistral, yacht AMADEA is one of the largest superyachts in the world, boasting ultra-luxurious amenities and splendid, elegant interiors by Zuretti Interior Design, accommodating up to 16 guests in 8 lavish ensuite staterooms. A highly-trained and professional crew of 36 ensures the yacht is maintained in an immaculate condition and guests are the utmost priority at all times.

NOTABLE FEATURES OF AMADEA: ~Foredeck helipad ~Sundeck spa pool ~Large swimming pool ~Beach club with bar ~Wine cellar and humidor ~Spa massage room with sauna and hammam ~Owner deck and bridge deck aft fire pits ~Lower deck conference room ~Spacious guest accommodation ~Unique 'clamshell' covered balcony design ~Massive cruising range of 8,000 nautical miles ~Air conditioning ~Wi-Fi

The exterior styling comes from renowned designer Espen Oeino and features an unusual 'clamshell' appearance best viewed from above on approach by the helicopter: These provide cover for the side balconies of the Owner's suite and the foredeck for greater outdoor entertainment areas that also create intimate spaces.

From the large swim platform on the lower deck guests have direct access to the beach club with a bar as well a the main deck aft above, which is fitted with a massive mosaic-tiled swimming pool measuring 9m/29.5ft long and 4.5m/14.7ft wide, plus sun pads on both sides.

On the upper deck, there is a sun-exposed section along the aft for sunbathing from the aft-facing L-shaped sofas placed near the fire pit, while a circular dining table is placed under the shade and can extend to serve up to 18 guests. Walk-around side decks connect to the foredeck, where there is a substantial Jacuzzi.

The bridge deck aft also has a fire pit for outdoor entertaining in the evening, and the surrounding sunbeds can be used for stargazing as well as soaking up the sunshine.

The sundeck aft is a spacious environment with a spa pool placed along the stern for relaxation while enjoying sweeping views out over the stern.

Zuretti was given the brief of 'authentic classic' 18th Century interiors with matching furnishings, while modern entertainment systems were inconspicuously added to the surroundings.

Guests can entertain beside the water in the beach club, which has plenty of seating and a bar. Guests have plenty of drinks choice on hand with the wine cellar, and there is also a humidor, conference room and a Moroccan-themed spa massage centre on the lower deck providing a hammam, sauna and massage room.

On the main deck, guests will find the majority of the guest accommodation forward with the main salon aft providing a formal dining area and plenty of reading material along the walls, and a hand-painted Pleyel grand piano for live entertainment. Classic detailing can be found throughout, such as the hand-painted clouds above the dining table and the back-lit bar has a broad selection of spirits with the most impressive bottles that coordinate with the room colour scheme receiving pride of place.

The upper deck is dedicated to the Owner and has plenty of comforts and conveniences on hand: A forward Master suite and en-suite bathroom, a dressing room, office, beauty salon, gym and a lounge complete with a piano.

The bridge deck hosts a cinema with a bar, popcorn machine and D-Box motion control in the sofas to match the action on the screen.

Superyacht Amadea

The Justice Department on Monday sought the forfeiture of a $300 million superyacht docked in San Diego that is believed to be controlled by billionaire Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov , who is under U.S. sanctions.

Authorities in Fiji seized the 348-foot Amadea pursuant to a U.S. warrant in May 2022 as Washington ramped up sanctions enforcement against people close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, to pressure Moscow to halt its war against Ukraine.

Monday’s complaint, filed in federal court in Manhattan, kicks off a potentially long judicial process in which the United States would seek ownership of the yacht, and then likely auction it and transfer proceeds to Ukraine.

Kerimov and his family are worth $10.7 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

He amassed much of his wealth through a stake in Russian gold producer Polyus. Kerimov was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in 2014 and 2018 in response to Russia’s activities in Syria and Ukraine. Those sanctions barred Kerimov from accessing the U.S. financial system.

Polyus was sanctioned in May 2023. The company said the sanctions were unfounded.

In Monday’s complaint, the U.S. Department of Justice said Kerimov bought the Amadea in 2021, and then violated U.S. sanctions by making more than $1 million in maintenance payments through U.S. financial institutions.

The yacht’s owners will have the chance to contest that claim in court.

Kerimov could not immediately be reached for comment.

Lawyers for the Amadea’s owner, Millemarin Investments, told a Fiji court last year that the Amadea was owned not by Kerimov but by former Rosneft chief Eduard Khudainatov, a Russian oligarch who has not been sanctioned.

Khudainatov is not named in Monday’s complaint.

U.S. prosecutors said a Sept. 14, 2021, transaction transferring ownership of the Amadea from Millemarin to a newly incorporated company, Errigan Marine, was designed to make it appear that Evgeny Kochman, the president of sanctioned yacht broker Imperial Yachts, owned the yacht.

Prosecutors said Kochman was, in fact, only a “straw owner.”

Khudainatov sued the United States on Monday in federal court in San Diego to release the yacht, according to a copy of the complaint provided by his lawyer, Adam Ford. Reuters could not immediately locate the legal papers online.

“The Amadea was seized upon false premises driven by political motivation,” Ford said in a statement.

American officials had not yet been cleared to take the Russian-owned superyacht Amadea from Fiji when agents from the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service and the Diplomatic Security Service boarded it earlier this month. Documents obtained by CBS News offer new details on the FBI's investigation into the yacht, as well as the moments after authorities boarded the Amadea.

"They want to take 20 crew and sail east!" the ship's captain, Michael Zerr, texted lawyer Feizal Haniff on WhatsApp on Thursday, May 5.

The day before the seizure, a Fijian prosecutor told a judge "the boat will most likely be moved sometime this weekend,"  after another hearing scheduled for Friday, May 6. However, officials boarded the Amadea a day early.

Haniff urgently emailed court officials, requesting they intervene, and replied to Zerr in a quick flurry of texts, asking the captain to buy some time.

"Please hold"

"Can you hold"

Haniff ultimately managed to stall the United States' efforts to remove the Amadea from Fijian waters. A court granted a temporary stay, freezing the ship in Fiji.

The documents obtained by CBS News shed new light on U.S. efforts to track and confiscate sanctioned oligarch wealth through high-end property like the Amadea. In the case of the 348-foot superyacht, which is still docked in Fiji's Port of Lautoka, that meant interviewing crew, pouring through records on the ship's computers and, ultimately, taking control of the ship by surprise.

The Amadea is one of at least two massive superyachts — with a combined value of about $1 billion — owned by holding companies tied to Eduard Khudainatov, a Russian oil executive who has not been sanctioned, seized since Russia's  invasion of Ukraine . Haniff says Khudainatov is the yachts' lawful owner, but in court documents filed in the U.S. and Fiji, American officials are dismissive, arguing he's not rich enough for that to be true. They say he is a "straw man" for the sanctioned Russian elite who really own the yachts.

Medvedev Tours Magnitogorsk Iron And Steel Works

"Khudainatov is a second-tier oligarch (at best) who would not have anywhere near the resources to purchase and maintain more than $1 billion worth of luxury yachts," an FBI agent wrote in the warrant application, after noting that Khudainatov is not included on Forbes' billionaires list.

Instead, the Justice Department says the $300 million Amadea's true owner is Suleiman Kerimov, a sanctioned billionaire oligarch who made his money in gold mining, and the Scheherazade — a $700 million yacht seized in Italy — is "linked" to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

An affidavit filed in a Fiji court by an FBI agent reveals details of the investigation that were redacted in a seizure warrant for the Amadea that the Justice Department made public on May 6. The agent said he interviewed "numerous members of the yacht brokerage community" to learn about the yacht's "concealed" ownership "behind nested shell companies."

Fijian police and FBI agents also interviewed the Amadea's crew in mid-April, according to the affidavit.

"Multiple crew members identified Kerimov as the true owner of the Amadea and others described seeing Kerimov's family using the yacht on multiple occasions," as recently as February, when Kerimov's children and grandchildren allegedly vacationed in the Caribbean.

One crewmember claimed that ownership of the yacht — which features a helipad and an ornate pool — had been transferred in 2021, in a "backdoor Russian deal," according to the affidavit.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin Visits North Caucasian Federal District

In documents Haniff prepared for court, he accused U.S. authorities of "appalling" behavior aboard the ship. He claimed law enforcement threatened to revoke crew members' visas and offered "bribes" to get a skeleton crew — 20 out of the 35 who were on board — to agree to bring the yacht across the Pacific.

Zerr recounted in an affidavit that an American maritime contractor quizzed him on ship maintenance and details about the crew, such as their COVID protocols.

The Justice Department did not reply to a request for comment.

Fijian law enforcement searched the ship's computers and went through the crews' emails, according to the FBI's affidavit. They found just one that mentioned Khudainatov, sent on March 8.  By comparison, police said there were multiple emails about trips Kerimov's family took in January and February — including about their vaccination records, COVID testing and passports. One email from the chief stewardess to the captain detailed "preferences for each guest from the February trip."

The emails allegedly referred to the Kerimovs in code — "G0" for Kerimov, "G-1" for his wife, "G-2" for his daughter and "G-3" for his son. The affidavit also claims the Kerimovs had requested long-term changes, such as a new pizza oven, a new spa bed, and, from Kerimov himself, "the quickest (jet skis) available."

That there are expensive features onboard is one thing both sides agree on.

Haniff cited "delicate marble and stones," and "precious woods and delicate silk fabrics fitted in the Amadea" as reasons why the ship needs a full crew to operate without losing value.

"Interior air-conditioned ambient conditions need to be maintained within stable parameters equivalent to artwork i.e., (69.8 degrees fahrenheit) and 55% relative humidity," Haniff wrote.

Haniff said Fijian law does not include any provisions allowing "a foreign country to seize property and take it back to their country, especially when the predicate for the seizure is not supported by corroborating evidence, but is instead purely based on hearsay allegations."

The appeals court heard Haniff's appeal Wednesday but has not yet ruled.

What do we know about the $450m superyacht linked to a Russian oligarch that's been seized in Fiji?

Topic: Unrest, Conflict and War

Fiji and the United States are embroiled in a court case over a superyacht allegedly belonging to a sanctioned Russian oligarch.

However, questions over who owns the Amadea — worth some $454 million — remain.

The fate of the luxury vessel is due to be determined by a judge in Fiji on Tuesday. Here's what we know:

Yacht has live lobster tank and helipad

According to Boat International, the Amadea is 106-metres long and features a stainless steel albatross that extends off its bow and weighs more than 5 tonnes.

It also boasts a live lobster tank in the galley, a 10-metre pool, a hand-painted Pleyel piano and a large helipad.

The Amadea travelled from Mexico for 18 days across the Pacific, entering Fijian waters on April 13, but it didn't have customs clearance.

Almost immediately, the United States sought to seize the yacht and sent a formal request for legal assistance to Fiji to prevent the vessel from leaving the Pacific Island's waters.

The High Court in Suva ordered the yacht not leave Fiji until the merits of the US warrant to seize it were determined.

A High Court hearing took place in Fiji last week behind closed doors, so media were barred from covering it.

For now, the yacht continues to sit in a Fijian harbour, with its crew of about 25 rotating on and off the vessel, while a police officer remains on board to ensure it stays put.

Which oligarch owns it?

Good question.

The US alleges it's owned by Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov.

According to Forbes, he is worth more than $US14.3 billion (almost $20 billion).

A man sunglasses and a hat and checked shirt raises his fist and smiles.

The US alleges tycoon Suleiman Kerimov (pictured above at a soccer match in 2012) is the beneficial owner of the yacht, but defence lawyers dispute that. ( Reuters: Sergei Rasulov )

Mr Kerimov, who was not on board, is a politician and businessman, and a close ally to Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

He's been sanctioned by the US since 2018 for alleged money laundering and has faced further sanctions from Canada, Europe and Britain after Russia invaded Ukraine.

However, defence lawyers dispute the ownership, saying the yacht belongs to Eduard Khudainatov, the former chairman and chief executive of Rosneft, a state-controlled Russian oil and gas company.

Importantly, Mr Khudainatov does not appear to be facing sanctions.

Why is yacht ownership so murky?

Many luxury yachts are linked to Russian oligarchs, but ownership is often veiled in secrecy, and they are often registered through multiple, offshore companies or trust funds.

One expert interviewed by the ABC used the analogy of an onion: The more layers an onion has, the longer it takes to peel.

A yacht in blue water

The yacht boasts a live lobster tank, a 10-metre pool, a hand-painted Pleyel piano and a large helipad. ( AP: Leon Lord, Fiji Sun )

In case of the Amadea, the ship is flagged in the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean, and its registered owner since 2021 is a company called Millemarin Investments (sometimes spelled Millemarine), according to the online site Equasis.

However, that fact alone does not give us many clues as to who the actual owner is.

Defence lawyers have claimed Millemarin is the legal owner of the vessel and that the company is linked to the real, or beneficial, owner, Mr Khudainatov.

However, US authorities have claimed that, behind all the various fronts, the real owner is Mr Kerimov.

Hamish Fletcher — a partner at the New Zealand law firm Oceanlaw — said superyachts often had multiple registrations because it was "just another layer of searching that someone would have to do".

"If someone is interested to try to find out who owns a vessel, they will search that register," he said.

"And then you have it in another country and then … you will probably not find out who the real, beneficial owner is, because you will just see what's on the register, which won't necessarily be the true owner."

Professor Donald Rothwell — an international and maritime law expert at the Australian National University — agreed that ship ownership was often a complex web.

"The question as to the ownership of the yacht sees us delving into incredibly murky and very difficult areas … where a vessel, for example, is not owned outright by an individual, but might be owned by a corporation or multiple different interests."

That, he said, added to the "complexity of any law enforcement".

Many superyacht owners also use multiple registrations for tax benefits.

While many Russian yachts are still at large — and moored in countries such as the Maldives or parts of the Middle East, to escape sanctions — others are on the move.

How can US jurisdiction stretch all the way to Fiji?

Professor Rothwell said the United States could be seeking to seize the yacht under the United Nations Convention against transnational organised crime, which both Fiji and the US are a party to.

If that is the case, he said, then "Fiji, as a party to the convention, has an obligation to assist the United States in those processes".

Professor Rothwell said Fiji could detain the vessel until the US sought to commence additional legal proceedings.

He said they could do so against the owner of the yacht or against the vessel itself.

"The way to think about this is that the sanctions provide the overarching framework for how the United States is seeking to possibly seize this vessel," Professor Rothwell said.

"But the actual technical aspects that the United States is relying on to enforce aspects of the sanctions, in this instance, are really relying upon the UN Convention.

"So, it's part of a growing, concerted approach ... to use multiple legal mechanisms to bring Russian entities ... to account for events associated with the Russian invasion of Ukraine."

Fiji has also condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"Fiji has voted in the United Nations to condemn what Russia is doing, and we stand by any sanction by the global community against the Russians and what they are doing in Ukraine," Fiji's Opposition Leader, Viliame Gavoka, said.

According  to the Fiji Sun , the prosecution has argued ownership of the Amadea is not an issue for the Fiji court, and the ownership question could be handled by the US jurisdiction.

The defence argued  that there was no evidence the Amadea was a proceed of crime and that the Fiji court must be satisfied the yacht was "tainted property", not simply because the US said it was.

As to whether US authorities can seize the luxurious superyacht, a judge is expected to rule on that decision on Tuesday.

Trying to sell Russian oligarch's seized luxury assets is running into trouble

Insiders still have no idea what's going to happen to Russian oligarchs' seized superyachts

  • It's been two years since Russia invaded Ukraine, leading to sanctions against Russian oligarchs.
  • Many of their superyachts were seized or frozen , leading industry insiders to question their fate.
  • The yachts, some of which are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, remain in a state of limbo.

More than two years after Russia invaded Ukraine, the boating world still doesn't have many answers about what's going on with the very large, expensive elephants in the sea: oligarchs' superyachts .

The war prompted many governments to enact sanctions against Russia's richest , including seizing their superyachts worth hundreds of millions of dollars. But it's unclear whether they can be sold or who'd buy them, leaving ports peppered with massive boats stuck in a floating limbo.

"The Russian problem, it's becoming a bigger and bigger and bigger problem," one luxury yacht broker told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show last week. Like many others, he requested not to be named, given the sensitive nature of the matter at hand and the generally discreet nature of the industry.

Russia has been a massive player in the massive boat market for a long time. In August 2021 — about six months before Russia's Ukraine invasion — Russians owned the second-largest share of yachts over 40 meters in length, according to a report from the industry publication SuperYacht Times.

They were responsible for 16% of new build superyacht purchases in the decade preceding the report and are known for splashing out on extravagant interiors and unique features. (One builder BI spoke to recalled a mandate from an oligarch for a large safe in the owner's cabin in which he could keep his rifles. The builder later learned he'd use them to skeet shoot on deck.)

But those sales have now screeched to a halt as oligarchs get hit by international sanctions. At least a dozen superyachts — worth well over $1 billion combined — have been affected.

And no one is quite sure what will happen to them.

Russia's sanctioned superyachts are hard to buy and sell

The first problem is that many of the yachts are "frozen" — not seized. That means that although the Russian owners can't operate or collect them, they don't technically belong to an overseas government, so they can't be sold without special permission.

Earlier this month, federal prosecutors petitioned a judge asking for consent to sell the Amadea, the 106-meter superyacht that has been docked in San Diego and costs the US as much as $922,000 a month to maintain.

"I've had some inquiries, but all you can tell them is we don't know the outcome yet" of the case, another superyacht broker told BI at the yacht show.

And despite the broker's claim of interest in yachts like Amadea , most ultrarich — or at least their brokers — don't want to go near the vessels with a ten-foot pole, even if the government does get legal permission to sell them.

"How does it look if you bought a Russian boat?" Julia Simpson, a broker at Thompson of Monaco, said. "Even if it's completely legal and normal, there are too many things on the line," she said, like how the original owner got their money and whether that could make the new buyer look bad.

There are also possible legal implications, as it's hard for the government to prove who actually owns the yachts.

"Oligarchs typically structure their ownership of these high-value assets through a web of offshore shell companies and trusts that is designed to conceal the true owner," Joshua Naftalis, a former federal prosecutor who now works for Pallas Partners, told BI.

And if the government does assume ownership, it's highly dependent on court orders. For example, a Russian whose yacht had been seized by the French government regained access to his boat after winning a legal battle in 2022.

"It's a very difficult process to buy them," Ralph Dazert, the head of intelligence at SuperYacht Times, told BI. "There is a high risk of the former (Russian) owner suing you to get the boat back."

He pointed to the Alfa Nero, the 82-meter yacht that Eric Schmidt planned to purchase for $67 million last year in an auction put on by Antigua and Barbuda. He backed out after various parties tried to block the sale, likely deeming it not worth the legal headache.

"When the reason for sanctioning goes away, which it may do," the Russian owners will try to get their boats back , Simpson said. After all, "the government's not going to pay them."'

That said, if sanctions are dropped, the yachts will be worth much less than when they were seized, as a boat not in use deteriorates much faster than one sailing the seas.

"Those yachts need to be used to be kept in shape, kept in condition," the second broker said. "Just having them sit at the dock with a temporary crew on board is not good for the boats."

And the sanctioned Russians who have managed to maintain control of their superyachts won't have an easy time offloading them in the future.

Americans who try to do business with sanctioned oligarchs would have a number of hoops to jump through — like finding a bank to process the purchase, which would be next to impossible. If somehow they did and the government caught wind, they'd face hefty penalties and the transaction would be void.

So Russia's richest have found themselves "stuck" sailing in a select few countries that will let them, like the Maldives, Montenegro, and Dubai.
