The innovations in the superyacht industry are sometimes profound, oftentimes subtle and mega yacht AVIVA has examples of both: Winner of the  Boat International Superyacht Design and Innovation Awards  2018 for  Best Lifestyle Feature Design , she is the first superyacht to ever have an indoor padel tennis court, and the logistics behind this new feature have set the groundwork for future designs.

Built in 2017 for UK billionaire Joe Lewis, 98m/322ft superyacht AVIVA is the largest yacht ever produced by Abeking & Rasmussen and was built in 2017 for UK billionaire Joe Lewis, who has a fondness for naming his superyachts ‘AVIVA’, the first built by Feadship in 1998 and measured 62m/203ft in length. This is also not the first AVIVA Abeking & Rasmussen have delivered to the British billionaire, the first being 68m/223ft in length in 2007.

Reymond Langton Design created the exterior and interior styling for the current AVIVA, and although there are plenty of outdoor areas, it is clear that the focus has been placed upon the voluminous interior of 5,000 GT. The padel tennis court is her most outstanding feature and measures 20m/66ft in length, 10m/33ft wide and almost 7m/22ft in height. This technical achievement involved over 2 tons of sand to recreate the bounce, and soundproofing also came into consideration. Ceiling lighting is plentiful and there is a small, net protected lounge that can be converted into a gym.

“It is not only a lifestyle change for the owner but also for the crew as this is also the largest gym of any yacht,” said the designers at Raymond Langton Design. “The crew is encouraged to play with the owner and guests and when the court is not in use for padel, the net can be removed and the crew plays football and use other exercise equipment in the space. It is after all a sports hall.

As superyacht AVIVA is designed as a live-aboard vessel, the colour scheme is modern and practical. Warm and natural tones are used in the fabrics and leather and vibrant accents pop out from the furnishings, while glass and steel are used extensively to manipulate the light. As Joe Lewis uses AVIVA to ‘work from home’, she has excellent internet access and satellite communications, ensuring that he can keep in touch with financial developments anywhere in the world.

The exterior has a large swim platform and beach club in the stern form a large guest area beside the water, and a number of shaded and sun-exposed aft lounging areas run from the main deck up to the sundeck, which are connected by under-lit glass staircases that enhance the atmosphere on board at night. The sundeck is the centre of outdoor activity and here guests have a choice of circular sunpads or secluded sunbathing spots close to the helm station.

Her technical performance is exemplary as well: A hybrid propulsion system allows AVIVA to travel at 11 knots using electric motors, allowing her access to more sensitive natural areas due to zero emissions. At full speed, she is capable of 20 knots and research into the hull design has resulted in 20% less drag.

Abeking & Rasmussen Launches Largest Yacht Yet

New year, new record-breaking yachts.

Abeking & Rasmussen started off 2017 big with the launch of Aviva , the largest yacht ever built by the German shipyard. At 321 feet LOA, Aviva ranks in the top 50 largest yachts in the world — just one foot less than Lurssen’s Carinthia VII .

The yacht was so large that the shipyard created a special launching system. A large pontoon was shipped from Norway and a hydraulic platform trailer with 60 wheels was used to move the 321-footer into the water.

The mega-yacht was designed by Reymond Langton Design and Toby Silverton. Abeking & Rasmussen describes the design as sleek, elegant and modern.

She has a reported 20-knot top speed and can reportedly run at an 11-knot cruise using only her electric motors, courtesy of a hybrid-drive propulsion system.

Quick turnaround: Aviva was launched just 33 months after signing the contract for build.

Onboard amenities: Tennis enthusiasts will be delighted to hear that Aviva has a full-size tennis court on board.

Bayesian yacht’s captain faces investigation, italian papers say.

Italian prosecutors will investigate the captain of the superyacht belonging to British tech magnate Mike Lynch that sank off Sicily last week during an intense storm, killing Lynch and six other people , Italian media reports said on Monday.

Reuters was not able to independently verify the decision.

Being placed under investigation in Italy does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will necessarily follow.

James Cutfield, a 51-year old New Zealand national, is being investigated for manslaughter and shipwreck, the dailies La Repubblica and Corriere della Sera said.

Magistrates spoke to Cutfield on Sunday for the second time in a week, la Repubblica reported, questioning him for more than two hours.

It said prosecutors may also investigate a crew member who was on duty when the storm hit and survived the incident.

The British-flagged Bayesian, a 184-foot superyacht, was carrying 22 people when it capsized and sank on Monday within minutes of being hit by a pre-dawn storm while anchored off northern Sicily.

Fifteen people survived, including Lynch’s wife, whose company owned the Bayesian.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily:

• A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing seven passengers.
• British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was identified as one of the bodies pulled from the wreckage. His teenage daughter, Hannah, was the final one to be recovered.
• Lynch — known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” — had invited guests from Clifford Chance, a legal firm that represented him, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph . 
• Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it disappearing.
• A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the  Bayesian’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter , Hannah, was among those who died.

While the yacht had been hit by a sudden meteorological event, it was plausible that crimes of multiple manslaughter and causing a shipwreck through negligence had been committed, the head of the public prosecutor’s office of Termini Imerese, Ambrogio Cartosio, said on Saturday.

Maritime law gives a captain full responsibility for the ship, crew, and all on board.

Cutfield and his eight surviving crew members have made no public comment yet on the disaster.

“The Bayesian was built to go to sea in any weather”, Franco Romani, a nautical architect that was part of the team that designed it told daily La Stampa in an interview published on Monday.

He said it was likely the yacht had taken on water from a side hatch that was left open.

Romani said the crew underestimated the bad weather and that they should have made sure that all openings had been shut and the anchor removed before the storm hit the boat.

Abeking & Rasmussen flagship yacht Aviva delivered

The 98 metre  Abeking & Rasmussen  flagship yacht  Aviva  has been delivered. AIS data shows the yacht arrived into the British port of Falmouth earlier today (May 8) after leaving Lemwerder over the weekend.

Previously known as Hull 6501, this four-deck displacement yacht was launched in January sporting exterior styling by Reymond Langton Design . This is the largest project that the studio has worked on to date, surpassing the 91 metre Lürssen yacht  Lady Lara .

Very few details are known about Aviva so far, although her steel hull is believed to support an aluminium superstructure and she was built to Lloyd’s Registry standards.

As this image shows, her curvy superstructure sports large expanses of glass hinting at a bright interior, while the hull has been finished in a vibrant blue tone. Other key features include a vertical prow and a number of cut-out sections aft, suggesting that the yard has fitted either a side-loading tender garage or a fold-out superyacht beach club . A notoriously secretive yard, Abeking & Rasmussen has not confirmed any of these details as yet.

Other projects currently under development at the German yard include the 80 metre  Abeking & Rasmussen 6502 , which is due to launch next year, as well as two further yachts around the 70 metre mark.

Ploshchad Lomonosova (Lomonosov Square)

This square was created by the great architect Carlo Rossi . It is framed by a large architectural ensemble comprising of Ostrovsky Square , Alexandrinsky Theatre , and Theatre Street (now Ulitsa Zodchego Rossi ). Therefore, to get acquainted with Lomonosov Square is to get acquainted with these places as well. Only then will the curious gaze of visiting eyes really capture one of the city's best ensembles of high classicism in all its glory.

In the 18th century this was an empty space serving as the backyard of the Anichkov Palace near Chernyshev Lane. In the 1820s, the reconstruction of the territory was entrusted to Rossi. He designed a semi-circular area surrounded by several similar buildings. They housed the Ministry of Education of the Russian Empire and the Ministry of the Interior. Over Chernyshev Lane Rossi created one of his favorite arcs. The square itself was named Chernyshevsky.

In the late 1870s a park was built in the center of the square that was named in honor of the great Russian polymath and scientist Mikhail Lomonosov . In 1892, a bust of Lomonosov by sculptor Parmenas Zabello was placed in the park. Therefore, it is not surprising that in 1948 the square was renamed after Lomonosov, as well as Chernyshev Lane and Chernyshev Bridge over the Fontanka River.
