Testimonials.
The meeting room was quite adequate and the location most convenient, but the course outline and instruction were outstanding. Modern Sailing is fortunate to have such a well organized instructor in Mr. Stan Lander who teaches very well from a rich professional background. Mr. Lander was generous with his time and patiently in helping students who needed more attention or time in understanding various aspects of the curriculum.
Since many, many years, I had the dream to sail underneath the Golden Gate bridge. On October 14th last year, my dream became true. Thanks to our dear friend Aaron Fritz who made it possible and organized this cruise for us. With this adventure I was able to achieve one more milestone on my sailing career.
Finally on the water, it was great! Full moon made the flows even stronger and it was like sailing in a washing machine.
I did my sailing education in the English Channel, where the situation with the wind and flows is comparable to the San Francisco Bay. So I felt pretty much "at home" being on the helm in the Bay.
I hope our skipper Stan Lander enjoyed this day cruise too. We, definitely did! It was an unforgettable experience for all of us.
A very big thank you to all of you who made it possible, that my dream became reality! Also thank you for the MSC flag I got at the end of the day. It found it's place in my study, where I can see it daily.
I started sailing at Modern at the end of 2021 and threw myself into it, spending as much time out on the water as I could. I came to Modern with some flat water dinghy sailing experience and it was quite a transition learning to sail bigger boats in much tougher conditions. There was a lot to learn, but the Modern instructors, Club Skippers and fellow Modern sailors made learning fun and rewarding. My Modern instructors were clearly very experienced sailors and sailing with them was inspiring! I want to thank the maintenance crew and office staff for their dedication and hard work - you are the folks who make things work! There is a lot more to learn and I look forward to sailing with Modern for years to come.

20 August 2024—San Francisco, CA, USA – After three days of registration, boat inspections, and sail and equipment checks, the 2024 Diversified Melges 24 World Championship on San Francisco Bay is officially underway. Returning to this windy venue after ten years, anticipation was high, and the San Francisco Yacht Club is ready to deliver a regatta to remember.
Race Day 1 welcomed teams from Croatia, Canada, Germany, Italy, and the USA with sunny skies. As forecasted by Will Paxton during Quantum’s Weather Briefing , it was the warmest day of the week, setting the stage for a heated day of competition. The Race Committee, led by PRO Mark Foster , executed two races, and the action didn’t disappoint.
In Race 1, class stalwart Bora Gulari and his crew—Norman Berge, Nick Ford, Carlos Robles, and Charlie Smythe—got off to a strong start, leading from the first upwind mark to the finish line and securing the first bullet of the championship for KINGSPOKE team. In Race 2, they finished 3rd, while Peter Karrie’s NEFELI , with a mixed German-Italian crew, demonstrated impressive consistency by finishing 2nd in both races.
Don Wilson and his CONVEXITY crew—Jeremy Wilmot, Ted Hackney, Tomas Dietrich, and Ian Liberty—had a stellar first day, scoring a 3rd place finish in Race 1 and clinching the bullet in Race 2. Wilson praised the great breeze and expressed satisfaction with their performance, noting, “Anything can happen; there are a lot of great teams here, and we’re taking it one day at a time.”
CONVEXITY now holds the early lead, but with the top 3 teams tied at 4 points, the competition is only heating up!
The Corinthian division is equally intense, with two teams tied at 24 points. Kent Pierce’s AVERAGE posted a 9-15, while Duane Yoslov’s LOOPER scored 12-12. Meanwhile, reigning Corinthian World Champion from Croatia, Ante Botica’s MATARAN 24 is just 2 points behind with scores of 20-6 (26 pts).
Despite being less familiar with San Francisco’s challenging winds, Pierce and his crew—David Ryan Eastwood, Eric Stokke, Claire Hunt, and Tristan Richmond—are embracing the challenge and looking forward to the stronger winds forecasted later this week. Pierce also noted the unique weather patterns in San Francisco Bay, which could lead to unpredictable conditions, stating, “We like weird. When things get weird, we get going.”
With such tight competition in both divisions, tomorrow’s races are sure to bring even more excitement.
Sailing on the outer course, the Melges 24 teams were welcomed back to the harbor by a beer boat, kicking off the post-race festivities on the water.
The 2024 Diversified Melges 24 Worlds was honored to have Team USA’s Daniela Moroz join us this evening for the Day 1 prize giving. Moroz, a 6-time Women’s Kite Foiling World Champion and 4-time Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year, recently finished 4th in her division at the Paris Olympics. During her remarks, Moroz shared valuable insights from her Paris 2024 experience and reaffirmed her commitment to pursuing gold at LA2028, declaring she has “unfinished business.” The Melges 24 fleet responded with thunderous applause, and we’re all excited to cheer her on in LA!
Tuesday’s schedule includes three races, with the first warning signal at 11:25 AM.

If you watched the Paris 2024 Olympics, it would not be unfair to say how boardsailing has a speed addition. The new equipment for Windsurf and Kite events have foils, and go blistering fast. So, it is with some curiosity how the fastest growing segment for board events – wingfoiling – has slowed down.
Trading complexity for convenience, sailors may still be on foiling boards, but in their hands is a wing sail. “In other sailing disciplines there is usually a sail and a mast connected to a boat, but we are physically holding our wings in the air,” noted Makani Andrews, Windsurfing Bronze Medalist at 2024 Youth Sailing World Championships.
While not as speedy as windsurf or kite rigs, wingfoil interest is spawning an increase in competition which included the inaugural U.S. WingFoil Championship . Phil Muller, US Sailing’s Youth Performance Manager, shares his experience from the event:
“Welcome to Wing Ding” regatta chairman Geoff Headington heralded to a room full of former windsurfers, kiters, dinghy sailors, paddlers and surfers who assembled at St. Francis Yacht Club recently for three days of wing foil racing that included slalom, course and a long-distance race from Crissy Field to Berkeley Pier and back.
After logging 150 miles of WingFoil racing, I now find myself at San Francisco airport on Sunday night, in a state of euphoria and exhaustion that might make me look like I’ve spent too much time on Haight-Ashbury. But the truth is, I just attended an almost spiritual reunion of sailing’s purest vanguards.
This event attracted WingFoilers from all corners – California, Washington, Hawaii, Mexico, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Florida, Puerto Rico. Boys and girls, men and women, from ages 12 to 68 years spent the weekend chasing one of St Francis’ favorite sons, Johnny Heineken, around the city front.
When I first came to San Francisco in 1998 for the U.S. Windsurfing Nationals, I was immediately blown away by the level of sailing, harshness of condition, and camaraderie in the parking lot of Crissy Field. Twenty-six years later not much has changed. The sailing zeitgeist continues, and the Bay remains a crucible for innovation, having birthed kite racing, kite foiling, windsurf foiling, and now WingFoiling.
My host and longtime windsurfing campaigner and friend, Steve Bodner, commented that if it weren’t for the yachts ripping across the City Front during the 34th America’s Cup, we wouldn’t have the WingFoil races we did today. Who’s to say exactly which factors led us to this moment, but the fact remains that San Francisco has always been the heart of innovation in our sport.
Everything we believe sport can do for us as humans; uniting young and old, pushing ourselves beyond our current capabilities, testing the mind and body, the joy and hardship of processing your own performance—these things and more were felt by all competitors this weekend.
What strikes me as particularly satisfying about the 2024 Wing Ding is how it brought together people from all different age groups and various parts of our extended sailing family, for example:
Legendary designer Pete Melvin and his son James; Windsurfing Hall of Famer Nevin Sayre and his son Rasmus; regatta host Geoff Headington and his son Morgan; 4x SUP World Champion Fiona Wylde brought a crew of water-women from Hood River; former Stanford Sailing Captain, Yuri Namikawa, and husband Cole Hatton both competed; F4 founder Al Meril and son Kai; WindClub Hawaii showed up with van full of gear and a posse of under 19 foilers that lit up the water; and the list goes on.
I’ve been to hundreds of awards ceremonies and St. Francis continues to deliver great food, raucous laughter, and an environment for building strong friendships. Many thanks to the club members and leaders who continue to support our slice of the sailing community.
As the sailing world tackles issues of participation, representation, and enjoyment the phrase “back in my day” reveals a growing divide between generations. My own catalog of sepia-toned memories from yesteryear continue to call me back to the water.
For those who don’t consider these Wing Dinging highfliers true “sailors,” that’s fine. The fact remains that whatever barriers hold us back, a bunch of sailors from every corner accumulated nearly 10,000 miles of buoy racing in San Francisco Bay.

Home News Event Recap: 2024 U.S. Team Racing Championship for the George R. Hinman Trophy
The 2024 U.S. Team Racing Championship , hosted by the Severn Sailing Association (SSA) in Annapolis, Maryland, was a thrilling display of tactical skill, teamwork, and competitive spirit. This prestigious event brought together top sailors from across the nation, all vying for the coveted George R. Hinman Trophy.
24 teams of 6 sailors each convened in Annapolis to test their talents against the best team racers in the nation.
Over the course of the regatta, teams competed in a Swiss League format with 220 races on the first two days. Light to moderate breeze from the Southeast greeted competitors on the first two days and on the final day, a very light Westerly prevailed, cutting down on the number of races able to be sailed on the ultimate day.
The competition was fierce, with sailors navigating a variation of conditions, making every race a true test of strategy and coordination.
In the end, Los Huevos emerged victorious for the second year in a row, showcasing exceptional boat handling, quick decision-making, and seamless communication.
“Super grateful for the way the regatta ended up,” said Mitchell Callahan. “Grateful to the other five people on this team and to our parents and our many coaches along the way.”

“We’ve been lucky enough to sail at school together the past few years,” said Lachlain McGranahan of Los Huevos. “We’ve been sailing together for a long time now and we just enjoy doing it.”
“The competitors were awesome and we learned a lot from each other,” said Sara Schumann.
The event featured a two-day livestream with coverage provided by GoPro, the Official Action Camera of US Sailing and presenting partner of the US Team Racing Championship Livestream. Annapolis local, Ashley Love, gave live commentary, with numerous guests, including US Sailing’s Youth Programs Associate, Whitney Kent, SSA member, Arthur Blodgett, Event Chair, Lisa Pline, and many regatta competitors, volunteers, and officials.
Off the water, competitors enjoyed socializing at beautiful Severn Sailing Association, while enjoying complimentary Black Seal Rum and Ginger Beer from Goslings , including the brand-new peach flavor, to make the famous Dark ‘n Stormy. Sailors were gifted custom event hats from Goslings, as well as event-branded dry bags from Gill.
US Sailing would like to thank Severn Sailing Association for hosting a fantastic event, and local sponsors, Day Sailer Fleet One Annapolis, Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association, Lightning Annapolis Fleet, Snipe Annapolis Fleet, SpinSheet Magazine, Zim Sailing, and Navy Sailing for their support of the 2024 U.S. Team Racing Championship.
The 2024 U.S. Team Racing Championship not only highlighted the high level of talent in American team racing, but also reinforced the importance of teamwork in achieving success on the water. Sailors and spectators alike left the event with a renewed appreciation for the excitement and camaraderie that team racing brings to the sport.
