Founded by John Barnett, designer and first builder of the BUTTERFLY class scow. First located in Libertyville, IL and then Kenosha, WI. The company was sold to Hedlund Industies in 1972 and production was moved to Green Lake, WI. In 2007, the assetts were purchased by Windward Boatworks of Middleton, WI.

You have come to the source for Butterfly sailboats, Butterfly sailboat parts and information. Why? Jim has over 40 years of close association with the boat, the class, and the builders - not to mention his 12 National titles! This is the place to begin - and end- your search for anything you want, or want to know, about the Butterfly.
Looking for Parts, Sails, Accessories? click here!
Designed over 40 years ago as a mini-scow ("scow" refers to the shape of the hull), it has, like the other, larger scows, withstood the test of time and is still one of the very best small 1 to 2-person boats available. More comfortable to sail, with fewer specialized parts and pieces, and easy to sail, have made it one of the great simple designs of all time.
With plenty of room for 2, its a great kids boat to learn on and to develope skills to advanced levels - or to just have fun on the lake. For adults, it is easy to get comfortable in - one of the major problems with most boat this size - thanks to the deeper and roomier cockpit so you don't have to sail with you knees under you jaw. Iit is easy enough to sail that learning takes place fast.
And if racing is the goal, this boat shares with the other bigger scows the tradition of women sailing equally with men, but adds on it by making it possible for kids to sail equally with adults - all because there are no gimmicks or gadgets or special skills beyond simply being able to sail well.
With close to 11,000 built, this boat has succeeded in the marketplace by being a success on the water.
Its the ideal, simple, one-person recreational racing boat, or two-kid youth play, learn, or race boat.

We also offer Jim's own tiller extension , the right length, and with the right swivel connector that doesn't flip the extension away from you if you happen to let go. It is $60, you can find it on the Butterfly-->Parts page, which lists the Butterfly parts we normally stock.
All Ages Welcome! The ONLY small boat suitable for two kids or for single-handing by adults.

Barnett Marines Sports Inc
Builder and Supplier of small-sailboat parts and accessories
About 60 years ago, a midwesterner on a small Northern Illinois puddle had an idea for a small-lake sailboat. John Barnett thought that perhaps a scaled-down and simplified version of the Inland Lake Yachting Association’s 20-ft C scow just might be a good fit.
He went to work on his 12-ft idea, called it a Butterfly, and threw it into the water. By the end of the decade, it would be one of the most successful small sailboats ever, second only to the Sunfish that dated from the early 50’s.
With over 7,000 boats produced by the end of the 70’s, John tried something new, a 11-ft boat called the Max. It flopped, unfortunately, about 20 years too soon for an under-12-ft boat to succeed (check out the Europe dinghy). With that, John decided to sell the business, Barnett Boats Inc.
Hedlunds kept to the basic concepts for almost 30 years, over 11,000 Butterflys and hundreds of 1400s produced before finally getting old enough to dream of leaving the business. When it was time to sell, buyers were scarce, and the final deal left a lot of uncertainty for the sailors of the boats about future parts availability. The molds for the boats were sold, so that the boats could still be produced, but the parts side of the business remained in Hedlunds garage and was about to be scattered in bit and pieces when one of the original Butterfly dealers, Jim Young, partnered with a much new Butterfly dealer, Joe Terry, to create Barnett Marine Sports Inc. and acquire the parts side of the Barnett business.
Since 2010, Joe and Jim have kept the parts pipeline full, making many of the the parts themselves, so that the fiberglass builder could actually finish new boats, and so that owners of older boats could get the parts needed to keep their Butterfly and 1400 boats sailing. To simplify the business, Barnett Marine does not sell direct, only to the fiberglass builder and through selected dealers. This website is intended as a purely informational site, with parts lists and updates on what is new, and what is no longer available.
Because the Butterfly is still in production, virtually all parts are still available for new boats. BUT some of the original items on the early boats, especially ones built in the 60s, can no longer be found. So if an owner is willing to do a bit of retrofitting, there are parts that will still do the job, in most cases better than the original 1960s-technology parts. The 1400, with fewer boats built, is running out of easily replaceable parts options even though a few new ones have been built in the last 10 years. For the few Max’s that might still be sailing, only the rudder assembly is easily replaceable, but at a price that is probably double what a Max might be worth in the 2020’s.
