$250M superyacht Liva O draws 'big' attention on Seattle's Lake Union

SEATTLE - The superyacht LIVA O, owned by billionaire Stephen Orenstein , has made a notable appearance on Seattle's Lake Union . 

Measuring 387 feet, LIVA O is the largest superyacht ever built by the esteemed German shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen . For comparison, a Washington state Olympic Class ferry measures 362 feet.

Launched as the shipyard's latest masterpiece, LIVA O represents a significant achievement for Abeking & Rasmussen, which has been in operation for over 115 years. "We have once again succeeded in building an exceptional yacht," said Matthias Hellmann, CEO at Abeking & Rasmussen. "By upholding our values of innovation, quality, and client satisfaction, we have created a yacht that sets new industry standards."

Designed by Joseph Dirand Architecture in Paris, the yacht features a sleek black hull and offers luxurious amenities, including a Neptune Lounge with an underwater view, a swimming pool, a helicopter pad and a crow’s nest. The vessel also employs a diesel-electric propulsion system for quiet navigation and maneuvering. 

So how much does a yacht of this size cost? According to Superyacht Fan , Orenstein bought the yacht in 2023 for $250 million and estimates its annual running cost to be $15 to $25 million. 

According to Forbes , Stephen Orenstein is a German-American business executive with extensive commercial real estate holdings in Germany, Italy, the U.K. and the U.S., and holds a stake in the German soccer team Eintracht Frankfurt. 

Formerly owning 75% of Supreme Group, a logistics firm that supplied food and water to the U.S. Army in Afghanistan, Orenstein took over the company in 1985 after his father's death. 

Forbes estimates his net worth at $2 billion. 

The yacht's presence in Lake Union is drawing attention from locals and yacht enthusiasts alike, marking a significant milestone in Seattle's maritime scene.

Docked at Lake Union, a billionaire military supplier’s $250 million superyacht was so stunning that it left Seattle residents with their jaws dropped in awe. The lavish 387-foot-long Liva O has an underwater lounge, a 7-person submarine, and a one-of-a-kind swimming pool with liquid marble.

Dubai-based billionaire Stephen Orenstein boasts a net worth of $2 billion, according to Forbes. The 61-year-old owner of the logistics firm Supreme Group inherited his business, founded by his father. It played a significant role in supporting U.S. and NATO forces during military campaigns. Their numerous contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense catapulted their wealth into billions of dollars. The businessman cuts an important figure in the commercial real estate sector in countries such as Germany, Italy, the U.K., and the U.S. Real estate is also a passion and profession of his better half, Petra Orenstein, who owns Cara Investment, boasting massive real estate holdings and development projects in Europe and the United States. Orenstein’s business interests extend to the world of sports, and he enjoys a stake in the German soccer team Eintracht Frankfurt.

SEATTLE -- An incredible, 315-foot, $160-million super-yacht is docked in Seattle's Lake Union. It is believed to be one of the largest, if not the largest, yacht to ever enter Lake Union. According to the Puget Sound Business Journal, the Vava II is owned by Swiss-Italian multibillionaire Ernesto Bertarelli and his wife, Kristy. The PSBJ says the yacht has six decks, a swimming pool and rooms for 36 guests and almost that many crew. It costs a half-million dollars just to refuel this yacht. The PSBJ said the yacht is stopping at Seattle for repairs and provisions and may be headed to Alaska for the summer after having come from Hawaii.

‘The Boat Show, The Boat Show, The Big Seattle Boat Show!’ marks 75 years

The Seattle Boat Show is back in person this year after going online in 2021 – which means it has returned just in time to celebrate its 75th anniversary. This year’s show opens Feb. 4 at Lumen Field Event Center and Bell Harbor Marina on the Seattle waterfront.

According to the Northwest Marine Trade Association (NMTA), boating is an $8 billion industry in Washington, so the Boat Show is a big deal economically and otherwise. It’s also an annual event that’s been a big part of Seattle culture since not long after the end of World War II.

It all goes back to 1947, and NMTA president and CEO George Harris says the very first Seattle Boat Show back then – held in a big tent by the Ship Canal near Lake Union – grew out of an unrelated lobbying effort aimed at the state Legislature.

“Originally, there were 11 businesses right here at North Lake Union on the Ship Canal that came together,” Harris told KIRO Newsradio. “There was a proposed tax down in Olympia that they disagreed with. So they initially came together to address that taxation issue. And then shortly after that, they had the idea of putting the tent on the Ship Canal at Montlake and had the first-ever Seattle Boat Show in 1947.”

The show moved indoors in 1948 to the Armory (aka the Food Circus and the Centerhouse) at what’s now Seattle Center. Then, in 1963, the show moved to the nearly-new Coliseum (built for the 1962 World’s Fair and now known as Climate Pledge Arena); in the 1970s, the show moved to the Kingdome, where it became one of the biggest boat shows in the country.

It was that move to the Dome that inspired Louis Larsen, one of George Harris’ predecessors at NMTA, to commission the “Big Seattle Boat Show” jingle that arguably ranks alongside “One day only at the Bon Marché”  and “Do the Puyallup” as among the region’s most enduring earworms.

“It’s one of those things you don’t know whether it’s going to work or not,” Larsen told KIRO Newsradio about the jingle, which he says was created by the advertising agency Gerber/Myers Wolfe and Kilgore. “But it took off and it’s pretty fun.”

Before and after that jingle, and at all of its locations – including Lumen Field, where it moved after the Kingdome was demolished and where it’s been held for more than 20 years – NMTA’s George Harris says one important thing hasn’t changed.

“I like to call it the spirit of boating here in the Northwest,” Harris said. “It’s really intense, and I think it’s more intense in this region than other parts of the country. The type of boating we do here, the fact that we can do it year round compared to some of the other northern latitudes.”

“People really love their boats and like to be around boats,” he added.

Jack Wolfe went to the very first show under the big tent in 1947. He’s in his 80s now and retired, but his company, Associated Boat Transport, has had the responsibility for decades to safely move all the big boats in and out of all the various venues over the years.

Wolfe said the advantage with moving the show to the Kingdome was that the giant concrete multipurpose stadium was huge, which meant room for displaying more than a dozen big sailboats with tall masts. But until the masts were set up – when they were just lying on the ground – they made getting around the Kingdome pretty difficult for the people doing the set-up, and interfered with some, shall we say, “alternative modes” of transportation that Wolfe tried for getting around inside the spacious Dome.

“We were always moving those things [the masts] and trying to keep them out of the way, which made it very difficult to use any kind of contraption to get around that big building,” Wolfe told KIRO Newsradio. “I tried bicycles and go-karts and all kinds of things to try and get around, but the problem was I’d have to get off the bike and walk 100 feet over to what’s going on and then get sidetracked by something else, and it was hard.”

“That was a big building,” Wolfe recalled, and plenty of people came to the Boat Show that year just to get a closer look at the multipurpose facility that was home, in those years, to the Seahawks, the Mariners, the Supersonics, the Sounders – and the occasional tractor pull or Led Zeppelin or Paul McCartney concert.

Along with the boats of all sizes, NMTA and Boat Show exhibitors have for decades offered workshops and other opportunities for learning about navigation, boating safety, or the latest dazzling boating accessories – along with the occasional Sea Gals fashion show, of course.

Louis Larsen, who famously  was in charge of special events during the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, says one of the biggest attractions when he was running the Boat Show was having a diver jump from up near the ceiling of the Coliseum or the Kingdome into a tiny pool of water on the floor below.

“We used Captain America Jones , and he would dive in a pool of rattlesnakes first and then piranhas, and of course, nobody’s ever been bit by a rattlesnake that was swimming underwater,” Larsen said. “But it was fun to watch him dive, and we’d have him there for the 10 days of the show.”

Larsen has always brought a certain amount of razzle-dazzle and show biz to the projects he’s been involved with since the days of the World’s Fair. One year at the Boat Show, he was particularly impressed by Captain America Jones’ similar commitment to entertaining the audience and to doing the show, no matter what.

“I think it was the first Saturday night” of the show when Jones made one of his dives, Larsen said. “He was down [in the pool] a little too long, and he came up and his chest was just ripped to shreds. And he turns to me as he’s going out with the guys from Medic One, and he says, ‘Boy, that ought to bring ‘em in tomorrow night!’”

Louis Larsen is 97. He, too, attended the first Seattle Boat Show in 1947. He’s seen a lot of history around here over the years, and made a lot of big, historic things happen, too.

Why, then, in a pandemic, and an age where so much retail has already moved online even before that, does Louis Larsen think the Boat Show remains such a popular draw?

“Seattle’s for dreamers,” Larsen said. “Everybody dreams of having a boat.”

“That was beauty of the Kingdome,” Larsen continued. “They’d go up and then sit in the stands, and they’d look down there and – maybe they [already] had an 18-foot SmokerCraft, and they could say, ‘Boy, I’d like to have that 24-foot Bayliner or Uniflite, or one of those,’ and they’d sit there and they’d think about it.”

Those Seattle dreamers also can be pretty fortunate when it comes to boating weather around here, says Louis Larsen.

“Boating is really year-round in Puget Sound,” Larsen said. “Like today — today, there’s no wind blowing. It’s not hot, but you can go out on the water in Puget Sound.”

When planning a charter, it's important to know what type of boat you want. There are many types of boats available, so it's important to choose the right one for your needs. We offer a variety of vessels, ranging from small sailboats to large cruise ships. Our staff members will help you find the perfect yacht for your event. The Pacific Northwest is a region in western North America bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and, loosely, by the Rocky Mountains on the east. Though no universally agreed upon boundary exists, a common conception includes the U.S. states of Oregon, Washington, and the Canadian province of British Columbia. Broader conceptions reach north into Alaska and Yukon, south into the coastal and mountainous regions of Northern California, and east into Idaho and western Montana, and western Wyoming to the Continental Divide. Narrower conceptions may be limited to the Northwestern U.S. or to the coastal areas west of the Cascade and Coast mountains.  The Northwest Coast is the coastal regions of the Pacific Northwest and the Northwest Plateau (also commonly known as "The Interior" in British Columbia and the Inland Empire in the United States) is the inland regions. A yacht charter vacation in this region usually includes the areas surrounding the Puget Sound, the second largest estuary in the USA with over 2300 miles of coastline and the San Juan Islands.

Montlake Cut:  The Montlake Cut is the easternmost section of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, which passes through the city of Seattle, linking Lake Washington to Puget Sound. It is approximately 2,500 feet (760 m) long and 350 feet (110 m) wide. The center channel is 100 feet (30 m) wide and 30 feet (9.1 m) deep. The path along the cut was designated a National Recreation Trail as Montlake Cut National Waterside in 1971.[1]

The Cut provides a connection between Union Bay, part of Lake Washington, to the east and Portage Bay, an arm of Lake Union, to the west. It is spanned by the Montlake Bridge, a bascule drawbridge carrying Montlake Boulevard (State Route 513). Most of the land on the north shore of the Cut is occupied by the University of Washington, its medical school to the west and its stadium parking lot to the east; residences and a recreational trail occupy the south bank, which is part of the Montlake neighborhood. It is the site of the annual Windermere Cup crew regatta and the Seattle Yacht Club's Opening Day Boat Parade, both of which take place on the first Saturday in May. Puget Sound Boat Rental:  The Puget Sound region is home to the majority of Washington State citizens who live in the bustling cities and suburbs that extend north to south from Stanwood to Olympia. Most Puget Sound communities lie on either side of the north-south Interstate 5 corridor that serves as the major traffic thoroughfare of the state.

Puget Sound itself is a body of water lying east of Admiralty Inlet, through which ocean waters reach inland some 50 miles from the Pacific Coast to provide all-weather ports for ocean-going ships at Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia. The waterway is a complex and intricate system of channels, inlets, estuaries, embayments and islands.

Ballard Locks:   Tourists and locals enjoy watching the parade of yachts, sailboats, motorboats, barges and tugs passing through as the locks' water levels are adjusted to allow for safe passage between the salt water and the fresh water of the ship canal. Tillicum Village:  Tillicum Village is a Puget Sound area visitor attraction located on Blake Island just off the shore of Seattle, WA. It is believed that this attraction dates to the time period immediately preceding the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. Madison Park:  Madison Park is a neighborhood in east central Seattle, Washington, USA, named after the city park at the foot of E. Madison Street on the Lake Washington shore Estates on Mercer Island:  Mercer Island Estates is the largest South End neighborhood located just south of the QFC shopping center and Mercer Island Country Club. This planned community was built in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and includes homes in a variety of styles, including mid-century modern, traditional, and Northwest contemporary. With wide streets and plenty of cul-de-sacs, this neighborhood is popular with families, who also enjoy Wildwood Park and its proximity to the nearby South End shopping center.

Fremont Cut:  The Fremont Cut is a body of water that forms part of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, which passes through the U.S. city of Seattle and links Lake Washington to Puget Sound. The Fremont Cut connects Lake Union to the east with Salmon Bay to the west. It is 5,800 feet (1,800 m) long and 270 feet (82 m) wide. The center channel is 100 feet (30 m) wide and 30 feet (9.1 m) deep.

The Fremont Cut is spanned by the Fremont Bridge, a bascule drawbridge that connects the neighborhoods of Fremont and Queen Anne via Fremont Avenue North. A campus of Adobe Systems and the headquarters for Tableau Software are located at the north-eastern quadrant of this intersection of bridge and canal, and an office of Google is located on the north-western quadrant. Meydenbauer Bay in Bellevue:  The Bellevue Marina lies between the foot of 99th Avenue Northeast and 100th Avenue Southeast on the south side of downtown Bellevue. Depending upon the pier, the marina may be accessed from either street. From Interstate 405, take the NE 8th Street exit west. Turn left on Bellevue Way Southeast. Turn right on Main Street and proceed until reaching either the 100th Avenue Southeast or 99th Avenue Northeast intersections (Please note that Main Street turns into Lake Washington Boulevard Northeast at the 100th Avenue Southeast intersection.) Estate with Full T-Rex skeleton inside: Nathan Myhrvold became fascinated with dinosaurs and visited the filming of the “Jurassic Park” sequel in 1996 and met the film’s consultant and world-leading paleontologist, Jack Horner. Horner convinced Nathan to use some of his Microsoft multimillions to fund a dinosaur bone digging foundation. His foundation has recovered more tyrannosaurus rex skeletons than the total previously found by everyone else. He has given most of them to museums including the Smithsonian. In-side the big rounded windows of his living room he has one of the t-rex skeletons he helped dig up.

Bill Gates House: Originally purchasing the lakefront property for $2 million in 1988, Gates has done everything in his power to ensure his dream home doesn't have a negative impact on the environment. Built into a hill as part of its earth-sheltered design, Gates was concerned about potential runoff from the walls of the massive estate. To combat the problem, he collaborated with the two architectural firms who designed the home to create an artificial stream on the property to catch the runoff. And, in true Gates fashion, he took the design up a notch and has the stream stocked with salmon and trout giving even the wildlife a fisheye view of the most expensive home in America.

Fisherman's Terminal –  Fishermen's Terminal is a dock for Seattle, Washington's commercial fishing fleet, on Salmon Bay in the Interbay neighborhood, east of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks and immediately west of the Ballard Bridge.

Hunts Point & City of Kirkland:   Incorporated in 1955, the Town of Hunts Point is located on the eastern shore of Lake Washington just north of the SR520 bridge. Once a camping ground for the Sammamish Indian tribe, this residential community of single-family residences is home to just under 500 residents. Hunts Point is one of the smallest municipalities in Western Washington, yet its bucolic feel and proximity to Seattle and the Eastside help make it a highly desirable place to live. Seattle Skyline: From 1903 to 1904, Seattle's tallest building and first steel-framed skyscraper is constructed. Hundreds of Sailors Ready to Race in the 60th Edition of Rolex Big Boat Series

One of the best sailboat racing venues in the world, iconic San Francisco Bay, is ready to turn it on for the 60th edition of the Rolex Big Boat Series at St. Francis Yacht Club, September 11-15, 2024. The most prestigious regatta on the West Coast drew 71 boats and nearly 700 sailors to the docks of St. Francis Yacht Club, to hear what classes will race for Rolexes and perpetual trophies on Wednesday night, and to start preparing for the first race on Thursday, September 12. With a strong turnout in one design classes and ORC divisions, organizers are thrilled to welcome members and guests to be a part of the action on the water and shoreside.  

“Having been involved in this epic West Coast regatta for some four decades, it is my honor and privilege as Commodore to welcome our members and guests to the 60th edition of the Rolex Big Boat Series,” said Chris Perkins, 2024 Commodore of St. Francis Yacht Club and a past winner of the event. “I wish the best of luck to our competitors who are here to compete in one of the world’s most spectacular racing venues. Sail fast and enjoy our outstanding hospitality.” 

Rolex Big Boat Series’ extensive history of champions is a tribute to the depth of talent that graces the event and this year, a solid fleet stacked with talented and tough competition is expected.  

“We have 30 J/105s starting again this year, which is great to see, and the ORC fleet is diverse and deep in talent with past winners returning to defend their titles,” says Felix Weidling, Race Director of St. Francis Yacht Club. “We always have our competitors’ best interests in mind and after taking in sailors’ feedback from last year, we continue to improve this important event which is a cornerstone of West Coast sailboat racing.” 

Perennial Rolex Big Boat winner in the J/105 class, Ryan Simmons and his well-seasoned team on Blackhawk are eager to see how the competition will play out in the competitive San Francisco-based J/105 fleet. Blackhawk took first in class in 2019, 2021 and 2023, and second in 2022. Simmons does not take for granted that his luck will bear out for another win, although he and his crew are talented enough—and hopeful.  

“We’re lucky, we have low turnover on our team—we’ve been sailing together a long time and it’s the big difference,” says Simmons. “Our competitive edge this year will be consistency. In the first two days of the regatta, you can’t lock in the win, but you can definitely take yourself out of contention, so sailing smart the first couple of days is key, but Saturday and Sunday are really where the championship will be won.” 

Hot to prevail against Blackhawk is NeNe , owned and skippered by Tim Russell who has played bridesmaid many times, often finishing in the top three. He’s currently leading the local J/105 fleet in the class championship series, making him a serious podium contender.  

“A first place on NeNe is alluding me!” says Russell. “You have to take chances and I usually approach every regatta being super conservative. On my starts I’m trying to win one end or the other and let our boat speed take care of itself and minimize mistakes, but in Big Boat you have to gamble.” 

Peter Wagner won last year’s ORC-C division on Skeleton Key, the J/111 he’s owned since 2015. Winner of the J/111 North Americans for two years in a row and St. Francis Yacht Club’s Sailor of the Year in 2023, Wagner is a tough act to follow. He’s been racing Rolex Big Boat Series for almost 25 years and is looking forward to the solid competition, great conditions and fun social gatherings. 

“It’s always one of the highlights of our season and certainly the highlight of racing on San Francisco Bay,” says Wagner. “In this particular event we’ve raced in various one design classes as well as ORR and now ORC and we’re really excited about the momentum around ORC. I think it will be a really competitive event. Some of the best, most reliable and most fun sailing conditions in the world are this time of year at this venue, the race management is second to none and the social side is always spectacular. There is always a great group of sailors that convenes around RBBS.”

TROPHIES & ROLEXES 

At the Competitors’ Briefing on Wednesday, September 11, at 1600, St. Francis Yacht Club announced which classes will be racing for the six perpetual trophies and two Rolex timepieces. 

J/105 

As the largest one-design fleet this year, the J/105s will compete for StFYC’s Commodore’s Cup. The top J/105 skipper will also receive a Rolex timepiece. 

ORC-A 

The St. Francis Perpetual Trophy, which was anonymously donated to StFYC in 1966 to encourage competition between large offshore racing yachts, will be presented to the winner of the ORC-A fleet. 

ORC-B 

The ORC-B division will be racing for the City of San Francisco Perpetual Trophy, which has been contested since 1968 and features one of the original spades from the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge. The winner of this division will also take home a coveted Rolex timepiece. 

ORC-C 

The Atlantic Perpetual Trophy, featuring a ship’s bell from the 1905 Transatlantic-record-breaking schooner Atlantic, will go to the winner of the ORC-C fleet. 

EXPRESS 37 

The Express 37s will race for the Keefe-Kilborn Perpetual Trophy, established in 1976 to honor the memory of late StFYC members Harold Keefe and Ray Kilborn, 

The Richard Rheem Perpetual Trophy, named for longtime StFYC member and skipper of Morning Star—the yacht that proudly broke the Transpac course record in 1949 and 1953—will go to the winner of the J/88 class. The PCYA Jesse L. Carr Perpetual Captain and Crew Trophy will go to the winner of the top J/88 finisher. 

CLASSICS  

The Classics will compete for the Classic Cup Perpetual Trophy. 

ADDITIONAL AWARDS 

All three ORC divisions will also be contesting the West Coast Championship. 

The Storm Trysail Team Trophy to the three-boat team who have entered and achieved the best score. The team must be comprised of one boat racing in an ORC class, one from a one-design class, and one from any other class. 

“I’m excited to lead the Rolex Big Boat Series in its 60th anniversary year,” says Susan Ruhne, who chairs the regatta and is the 2024 Rear Commodore of St. Francis Yacht Club. “The event is such an important part of the StFYC’s history and a favorite for so many sailors and spectators to experience. There is nothing like watching 70-plus boats on three race courses duke it out on San Francisco Bay, including the classic downwind run from the Golden Gate Bridge back to the club. I am also very proud that we continue to maintain Rolex Big Boat Series’ status as a Clean Regatta, a foundation of the event.” 

The 2024 Rolex Big Boat Series is targeting Platinum Level Clean Regatta status, the highest distinction from Sailors for the Sea. A pre-regatta volunteer event with the Parks Conservancy was held at Crissy Field on Wednesday morning. Organizers have taken efforts to remove all single-use plastic from the event, and competitors spectators are invited to meet local non-profits who serve as Sustainability Partners for the event. Sail to Shelter will be collecting old sails on site to recycle into shelter for humanitarian aid.  

Quantum Sails will be hosting Daily Weather Briefings every race day at 0730. All sailors are invited to tune in for the forecast from experts at Sailflow Weather and to hear local knowledge about San Francisco Bay conditions and currents. 

Racing is set to begin tomorrow, September 12, at 1100 local time for most classes and 1300 for the Classics.

Sea turtles make big comeback on sandy beaches at 2 British military bases in Cyprus

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — Protected Green and Loggerhead turtles are making a big comeback on the beaches of two British military bases in Cyprus, with the number of nests surpassing last year’s record count by nearly 25%, environmentalists said Tuesday.

There were 382 sea turtle nests recorded this year on all sandy beaches inside the bases — 100 more than last year’s count.

Bases Environmental and Police Officer Alexia Perdiou said a decades-long commitment by base authorities to safeguard nests is paying off, given that an average of only 30 turtle nests were discovered each year on the base beaches between 1994 and 2011.

The turnaround is remarkable given that only one in 1,000 turtle hatchlings makes it to adulthood.

“The steep increase in turtle nests has been the result of a consistent, systematic ‘hands-off’ approach, together with enforcement efforts to minimize illegal, damaging activities on nesting beaches,” Perdiou said.

Contributing to the nest increase, she said, is the fact that most sandy beaches inside the bases are free from development, while daily patrols by volunteers ensure that aluminum cages set atop the nests remain in place to protect the turtles from predators like foxes and dogs.

Human activity on the beaches, including the driving of vehicles, parties with barbeques or powerful lighting is punishable by up to 17,000 euros ($19,000) in fines or three years in prison.

Perdiou said despite the success, authorities won’t let up in their conservation efforts in partnerships with the Cypriot government, local authorities and volunteers.

Britain retained two military bases along Cyprus’ southern coast after the east Mediterranean island gained independence from colonial rule in 1960. They are home to one of the Royal Air Force’s busiest and most complex airfields, and host important communications equipment.

Base authorities said it’s likely that investments of over 1 billion pounds sterling ($1.32 billion) will be made in the bases over the next decade.
