Blohm + Voss Yachts for Sale

blohm voss yachts for sale

Blohm + Voss have been building, converting and repairing ships for sailors, visionaries and businesses since 1877. The company was founded by Hermann Blohm and Ernst Voss, naval and mechanical engineers, as a general partnership to build steel-hulled ships.

Located in the heart of Hamburg, Blohm + Voss’ build portfolio includes merchant vessels, offshore units, passenger ships and luxury superyachts. The yard has been in almost continuous operation for over 140 years.

The yard’s uncompromising technical excellence and outstanding efficiency enables them to provide clients with enduring quality, and builds managed in accordance with project, cost and delivery requirements. The shipyard’s facility encompasses over 421,000 square-meters with a famous historic dockside, enviable manufacturing plant and dedicated development and construction centers.

In 2016, Blohm + Voss was acquired from Star Capital Partners by Lürssen. Lürssen’s acquisition of Blohm + Voss was one of the biggest superyacht industry mergers in history. The united power of Lürssen and Blohm + Voss is monumental, with a combined workforce totalling 2,800 employees and nine shipyards, not to mention six of the world’s 10 largest yachts in their collective fleet.

History of Blohm + Voss Yachts

Blohm + Voss have over 135 years of experience under their belts, and this German shipyard has been an integral part of modern maritime history.

In the 1930s, the owners of Blohm + Voss also established the Hamburger Flugzeugbau aircraft manufacturer which, shortly before the outbreak of World War II, adopted the name of its parent company.

Outside of their impressive superyacht fleet, Blohm + Voss are most well known for their construction of the Bismarck, a famous World War II battleship which was sunk in 1941.

Following a difficult period after the war, Blohm + Voss revived its fortunes by becoming a public company under a change of ownership.

In 2005, Blohm + Voss was acquired by German industrial giant ThyssenKrupp AG. In 2012, ThyssenKrupp sold the shipyard’s civilian operations to London-based private equity firm Star Capital. Under Star Capital, Blohm + Voss’ focus was on building custom superyachts and they did so with great success.

The last superyacht to leave the Blohm + Voss shipyard, before they became part of the German superyacht-building giants, Lürssen, in 2016, was the 269-foot (82m) GRACEFUL. GRACEFUL was designed by H2 Yacht Design and her hull construction was actually commenced in Russia before she was towed to Blohm + Voss in Hamburg for completion.

Not only has the Blohm + Voss shipyard been ahead of the curve, it has shaped its own.

Blohm + Voss Collection

Under the Blohm + Voss brand, nine superyachts were built and Northrop & Johnson are well versed in all of the superyachts in the Blohm + Voss stable. The impressive vessels built by Blohm + Voss are all well-known names on the who’s who list of iconic superyachts.

Most notable amongst Blohm + Voss’ more recent builds are the 2010-launched 533-foot (162.5m) ECLIPSE (designed by Terence Disdale), the 2008-launched 390-foot (119m) motor yacht A (designed by Philippe Starck) and, launched in the same year, 305-foot (93m) MAYAN QUEEN IV.

It took over five years to design and build ECLIPSE. The 533-foot (162.5m) megayacht was the largest yacht in the world at the time of her launch in 2010. The yacht features a private owner’s deck, which itself measures a staggering 184-foot (56m) in length, an impressive 53-foot (16m) swimming pool which converts to a dance floor, and boasts stowage for three helicopters.

Motor Yacht A is another Blohm + Voss superyacht to have enjoyed international acclaim, owed in part to her unconventional and distinctly recognizable exterior profile. Even now, over 12 years since her launch, Motor Yacht A remains one of the greatest head-turners afloat.

Understandably, Blohm + Voss superyachts are associated with groundbreaking engineering, unique design and true one-of-a-kind vision.

Blohm & Voss Yachts for Sale

The German yacht builder, Blohm + Voss, will soon celebrate its 140 years of maritime history. Blohm + Voss yachts are noble bearers of the “made in Germany” label, delivered from the heart of the port of Hamburg. Nearly 1,000 vessels, ranging from 262feet / 80meters to the mammoth length of 535feet / 163meters have been delivered over its 139year history. Blohm + Voss is known for having created some of the most unusual and daring superyacht designs on the waters. Today, Blohm + Voss not only undertakes full custom yacht projects but also has Design Concepts underway and the new semi-custom BV80 line. The Design concepts include the motor yachts Dauphin 328feet / 100meters, Jazz 306feet / 93.25meters, Nube 377feet / 115meters and Zeena 452feet / 138meters. Blohm + Voss partnered with the award-winning ‘next-generation’ team at Eidsgaard Design for the BV80 project. This project is a 262foot / 80meter semi-custom yacht where the design is flexible, the delivery is fast and the quality is fixed.

In 1877, Hermann Blohm joined forces with engineer Ernst Voss to create a small shipyard in Hamburg. Gradually their business expanded to become the largest single shipyard site in Europe, building the world’s largest passenger ships. In 1930 they launched the steamship Europa which won the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic passage. In 1931, the 440foot / 134meter Savarona was launched as the world’s largest pleasure yacht of its time. During the world wars, the shipyard was pressed into service and began to design and build aircraft for the German state airline. Following the Armistice, they focused on merchant shipping lines and the world’s navies. In the late 1980’s, and under the umbrella of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, Blohm + Voss embarked once again in the construction of superyachts with first off the 213foot / 65meter Katalina. She was the forerunner of a succession of luxuriously appointed yachts, each one designed to be markedly different from her predecessor. In 2012, the Blohm + Voss shipyard and repair business was acquired by Star Capital Partners, a London based investment fund manager. Maintaining the company’s heritage, Ernst von Freyberg, Hermann Blohm’s great-grandson, is Chairman of the Blohm + Voss Group and a significant shareholder. Star Capital Partners’ new investment and development work focused on the superyacht sector and strengthened the company’s position as the world’s pre-eminent builder and service provider of custom yachts over 262feet / 80meters.

At the massive Hamburg facilities (an area of approx. 421,300 m²), Blohm + Voss sets a clear course within its area of expertise in building, repairs and refits of Merchant vessels, Offshore units, Passenger ships and Superyachts. The company has recently announced the set-up of a new maintenance and refit facility for megayachts over 262feet / 80meters, in La Ciotat, in the South of France. Blohm + Voss has four business divisions:

Blohm + Voss Industries (“BVI”) produces ship components such as seals used in propulsion systems and stabilizers. Approximately 30% of the global ship fleet is equipped with BVI components. Blohm + Voss Shipyards (“BVS”) designs and builds high-end bespoke mega yachts. Blohm + Voss Repair (“BVR”) is a ship repair and conversion business, focused on complex, time-critical projects such as cruise liner extensions, refits for the offshore industry and mega yacht refurbishments. Blohm + Voss Oil Tools (“BVOT”) provides pipe-handling equipment such as elevators and automated floor-hands to the oil and gas exploration industry.

Blohm + Voss has an extended portfolio of notable yachts, including: The 269foot / 82meter Graceful, built in 2014 and designed by H2 Yacht Design of London. Her hull was built in Russia, but due to her unique complex design and equipment for voyages to predominantly cooler climates, the project was passed on to and completed by Blohm + Voss. Currently the second largest superyacht in the world, the impressive 532foot / 162,5m Eclipse was delivered by Blohm + Voss in 2010. She boasts a striking exterior design by the French architect Hermidas Atabeyki, characterized by various novel ideas such as the arrangement of a generous open loggia, balconies for the guest suites, a futuristic inside submarine hangar, as well as a helicopter hangar. In 2010, the major award winner Palladium (315feet / 96meters) was commented by Boat International Magazine “Palladium does not represent an evolution in yacht design; she is a new species entirely”. In 2008, the 390foot / 119meter motor yacht A was an outcome of the partnership of arguably the world’s most famous and prolific designer, Philippe Starck, together with the technical expertise of yacht designer Martin Francis and the engineers at Blohm + Voss. She boasted Starck’s ‘inversed hull’ concept and life rafts hidden away within the ship’s bulwarks. Undeniably, the Mayan Queen IV (305feet / 93meters) built in 2008, took engineering aesthetics to a higher level. Tim Heywood’s exterior design and Terence Disdale’s interiors introduced a series of innovative features including a tender garage with doors that seamlessly merge into the hull; glass sliding doors that disappear to create an unencumbered route between deck and saloon; a suite window which effortlessly turns into a fully formed balcony and closed partitions that smoothly turn into stairs. The 246foot / 75meter Eco, built in 1991, achieved the record-breaking top speed of 38 knots.

Blohm+Voss says that its new semi-custom BV80 superyacht combine’s the builder’s proven engineering prowess with flexibility and, of course, the short lead time that a semi-custom yacht can provide. The yacht’s hull, machinery and superstructure will be pre-engineered, but there is still much left to the owner’s personal choices.

She accommodates 12 guests over 7 luxurious rooms, as well as up to 23 staff and crew over a total of 13 cabins. Her interior layout and guest areas are completely customisable by the owners, allowing for a personalised and unique boat. In addition to her layout, the exterior paint can also be fully customised in line with the owner’s wishes.

Her outside deck areas are extensive, and amenities include a Jacuzzi, swimming pool, outdoor fire-pit, touch-and-go helideck forward and extensive beach club. One of her most notable features is the large main deck pool house and entertaining areas, which provides ample space to both relax and socialise. Stepping in from the glass panelled pool house, guests have a variety of options, including a comfortable, covered seating and dining area, a large pool and several sunbathing areas as well as a bar.

The first BV80 is already in an advanced stage of development, allowing the shipyard to offer potential owners a particularly short lead time. If construction started today, the first vessel could be be launched in 2017.

The Blohm+Voss Story

Ambitious beginnings.

Established in 1877 by Hermann Blohm and Ernst Voss, Blohm+Voss began by building iron steamships in Hamburg, pioneering berths for vessels up to 100 meters long. They later diversified, constructing a range of vessels, including the famous passenger liner Europa.

THE BLOHM+VOSS STORY

Superyachts for the Elite

Blohm+Voss’ success started in the early part of the 20th century as they started to build luxury superyachts for royalty and wealthy celebrities. One such yacht is 124m superyacht Savarona, launched in 1931 for an American heiress, and later the Turkish Presidential yacht.

Diversification

With the war looming, Blohm+Voss diversified into building warplanes and submarines in the 1930s and delivered the infamous German warship Bismark, which was the biggest European warship of the time. Recovery for Blohm+Voss was slow following the war, and they made a few different products, including oil-rigs.

Top 5: The 6-Engine Aircraft That Defined The Second World War

  • The Messerschmitt Me 323 Gigant was the largest land-based transport aircraft during WWII, with 198 built.
  • The Junkers Ju 287 had one complete flying prototype with six engines and a max speed of 347 mph.
  • The Latcore 631 was a French-made civil transatlantic flying boat with a short operational duration.

I appreciate it when our loyal Simple Flying readers ping me with suggestions for article topics. This article is in response to reader requests for us to explore the six-engine planes of WWII.

What WW2 Planes Had 4 Engines?

4-engines were mainly the purview of strategic bombers during WWII. The Allied examples were more famous, but the Axis also made their fair share.

After my slightly controversial article on World War II 4-engine bombers was published, my LinkedIn Connection Rob Harvan of Commemorative Air Force (CAF) – whose name some of you might recognize from a couple of my recent pieces on WWII-vintage aircraft restoration – pinged me to suggest that I up the ante by doing an article on 6-engine (that's right, folks, SIX engines) planes of "Dubya-Dubya 2." Rob was nice enough to provide not just a specific list of warbirds but the production numbers for good measure, so double-thanks for that, Rob!

What Are The Challenges Of Restoring WWII Military Planes?

Restoring WWII military planes is a worthwhile endeavor, but what are the inherent challenges of these projects?

So, I thought to myself, "Hey, why the heck not?" After all, back when I wrote for 19FortyFive , I wrote articles on the mammoth Spruce Goose (eight engines) and B-36 Peacemaker (10 engines), plus a piece on the "Caspian Sea Monster" Ekranoplan (eight engines) for my Patreon page . But none of those were WWII warbirds. As it happens, all the planes we'll be covering now were of Nazi-German origin or at least had some German nexus, which may indicate something or other about what Germany's aerospace engineers considered adequate power for the job at the time.

Messerschmitt Me 323 Gigant ("Giant")

198 built (plus 15 converted from the me 231 glider).

If one used total production numbers as the yardstick for measuring an aircraft's success, then the Me 323 would have to be considered the most successful warbird on this list. It was the largest land-based transport aircraft to fly during the war.

92 ft 6 in (28.2 m)

181 ft 1 in (55.2 m)

33 ft 4 in (10.15 m)

60,252 lb (27,330 kg)

94,799 lb (43,000 kg)

6 Gnome-Rhne 14N 14-cylinder air-cooled radial piston engines 1,180 PS (1,164 hp; 867.9 kW) take-off power

The Gigant made its maiden flight on January 20, 1942, and went operational in November 1942, whereupon it saw significant use in the Mediterranean Theater of the war, starting with the Tunisian campaign. The Me 323's service in this theater of operations was largely necessitated by the Axis's heavy shipping losses, which compelled a fallback upon a heavy airlift of equipment across the Mediterranean to keep the Afrika Korps of Field Marshall Erwin Rommel ("the Desert Fox") supplied.

There are no complete Me 323s surviving today. Still, there is a Gigant main wing spar sitting in the collection of the Luftwaffenmuseum der Bundeswehr (Air Force Museum of the German Federal Armed Forces) in Berlin. Meanwhile, a ruined but complete wreck of a Me 323 sits in 200 ft (60 m) of water, 8 nautical miles (15 km) from the coast of La Maddalena, an island near Sardinia, Italy .

Junkers Ju 287

2 complete airframes were built, plus three partially completed prototypes.

At first glance, this plane seems to bear at least a passing resemblance to another Luftwaffe jet bomber, the Arado Ar 234 Blitz :

A big difference is that 214 of the Blitzes were fully built versus a mere two for the Ju 287. Moreover, only one of the two Ju 287 prototypes, designated Ju 287 V1, actually flew (making its maiden flight on August 8, 1944). As an aside, the Ju 287 V2 is not to be confused with the Nazis' V1 cruise missile and V2 rocket terror weapons. The V1 actually only had four engines, while the V2, which was never quite completed, would have had six engines (two triple clusters composed of four Jumo 004s and two BMW 003s). V3 and V4, which also had six engines, were reportedly 80-90% complete and 60% complete, respectively, when the Soviets overran the Junkers plant.

Designed by Philipp von Doepp, the Ju 287 was a tactical jet bomber built in Nazi Germany in 1944. It featured a novel forward-swept wing and was among the very few jet-propelled aircraft ever built with fixed landing gear. Among the specifications of the plane:

  • Max airspeed: 347 mph (558 km/h ; 302 kn) at 20,000 ft (6,000 m)
  • Cruise speed: 318 mph (512 km/h; 276 kn) at 23,000 ft (7,000 m)
  • Range: 980 mi (1,570 km; 850 NM)
  • Service ceiling: 9,400 m (30,800 ft)

OKB-1/Junkers EF-131

1 complete plane built, plus three incomplete airframes.

This was actually a variant of the Ju 287. However, it can still be technically classified as a separate aircraft because even though it started off as a German project, it ended as a Russian (Soviet) one. In fact, it didn't actually make its maiden flight until after the "Great Patriotic War" (Великая Отечественная война/ Vělikaja Otěčestvěnnaja vojna , which is what the Russians still call the Second World War to this day), specifically on May 23, 1947. However, Mr Harvan still wanted to include it on the list, so we're willing to let it slide as WW2-adjacent.

The EF-131 was developed by the Soviets based on fragments of project documentation for the Ju 287 after the Red Army captured the Junkers factory in Dessau. The first prototype was built from Junkers Ju 287 V2 and V3 components, which the Germans had blown up to avoid capture by US forces; however, the Red Air Force could still salvage remnants such as the wing sections. The Reds combined that with the skeletal airframe of the Ju 287 V3 and then made the fuselage slightly longer (67 ft 2 in [20.47 m] for the EF-131 versus 60 ft [18.30 m] for the Junkers).

In addition, the EF-131 had a three-man crew compared to the two-man Ju 287, and was significantly faster, with a max airspeed of 530 mph (860 km/h; 460 kn). The powerplant consisted of six Junkers Motoren Jumo 109-004 turbojet engines, each with 8.829 kN (1,985 lbf) of thrust.

Soon after the EF-131's maiden flight, a structural survey revealed major weaknesses in the airframe. Indeed, that first flight resulted in the port undercarriage collapsing due to a bolt failure, while subsequent flight tests revealed further deficiencies such as nosewheel shimmy and tail surface vibration.

By the time the bugs were worked out of the system, the EF-131 had already been rendered obsolete anyway, as newer Soviet-built engines with better performance had come along. The program was terminated on August 23, 1948.

Blohm & Voss BV 222 Wiking and Blohm & Voss BV 238

13 and 1 (with 2 incomplete prototypes) built, respectively.

Okay, so we're cheating a bit here, as these are technically two different aircraft, which in turn would actually make this article a Top 6 List instead of a Top 5 List. Still, since only one of the latter planes was built (a 1:13 ratio compared to the first one), we feel comfortable lumping them together.

The V 222 was the largest flying boat to attain operational status during the Second World War. When it first flew in 1944, the BV 238 was the heaviest aircraft ever built and was the largest aircraft produced by any of the Axis powers during the war.

6 Daimler-Benz DB 603G inverted V-12 liquid-cooled piston engines, 1,417 kW (1,900 hp) each for take-off

They were built by the Hamburg-based Hamburger Flugzeugbau (HFB), an aircraft manufacturing offshoot of the Blohm & Voss shipbuilding company. I suppose it at least partially explains why the aircraft subsidiary saw fit to build flying boats.

HFB is now defunct, but Blohm & Voss (or " Blohm+Voss " as they prefer to display their name officially) is still alive and well.

The BV 222 made its maiden flight on September 7, 1940, and was officially introduced into operational service in 1941. As noted by the following Dark Skies video, "During its time in combat with the Luftwaffe it was the largest aircraft to down an enemy plane; however it also was the largest aircraft to be gunned down during the war." The former happened on October 22, 1943, when BV 222 V4 shot down US Navy PB4Y-1 Liberator, ofttimes mistakenly reported as an RAF Avro Lancaster . The latter occurred at least thrice, with the first such occasion taking place on August 21, 1942, when a Bristol Beaufighter shot down a BV 222 V6.

The PB4Y-1 was the USN's redesignation of the Consolidated P-24 Liberator .

At the war's end, several Wiking s were captured by US and British forces, but none were preserved for historical posterity. The wreck of Wiking V2 was discovered in October 2023 on the seabed of Norway's Trondheim Fjord ( Trondheimsfjorden ) at a depth of 1,043 ft (318 m). It was perfectly preserved due to the low oxygen levels at that depth. Initial plans were to raise and restore the sunken warbird, but those plans were later scrapped. According to historian Knut Sivertsen , the plane is too large for a salvage effort to be practical, plus Mother Nature – in the form of coral growth – is now creeping its way onto the plane.

As for the BV 238, it began development in 1941 and made its maiden flight in April 1944. On May 4, 1945 (four days prior to V-E Day), while moored on Lake Schaal, the plane was strafed and partially sunk by two 20mm cannon-wielding RAF Hawker Tempest fighters . From there, as noted by the narrator of the attached Aviation Deep Dive video:

"Sinking below the lake's surface, due to the extensive damage to the fuselage, the aircraft sat on the lake bottom for the following two years. In 1947, the 238 was eventually savaged, but tragically, immediately sent to be scrapped. A truly sad end to the aircraft, considering that if it had survived only four more days it might have been saved and put in a museum. As it is, the entirety of the sole produced 238 was completely scrapped, as well as the half-finished hull of the second and third prototype."

Latcore 631

11 produced (including the prototype).

Sacré bleu ! This is the lone plane on our list that is not Nazi German in origin, though it still has a bit of nexus with the so-called "Thousand-Year Reich," as it was built under Nazi-occupied, puppet-governed Vichy France.

The Latécoère 631 was a civil transatlantic flying boat built by Groupe Latécoère (founded in 1917 and based in Toulouse, France), the largest ever built up to its time. The plane was actually designed in 1936 (four years before the Nazis seized power) and ordered in 1938. Still, the outbreak of the war halted production, and it didn't resume until after the signing of the Armistice of 22 June 1940 (AKA the Second Armistice at Compiègne). The plane had been conceived by the Direction Générale de l'Aviation Civile (DGAC; "Directorate General for Civil Aviation") for a 40-passenger airliner with a range of 2500 miles (4,000 kilometers), powered by six Gnome et Rhône P.18 engines of 1,650 horsepower (1,230 kW) each. It finally made its maiden flight on November 4, 1942.

Some of you may recognize Latcore from their recent partnership with Airbus Corporate Jets (ACJ) .

Sometime after the maiden flight, the prototype was confiscated by the Germans, who passed it onto the Luftwaffe , who in turn took the plane to Lake Constance, whereupon it was destroyed in an air raid by two RAF de Havilland Mosquito fighter-bombers on April 17, 1944.

The second plane in the series took place after the liberation of France, on March 7, 1945. This specimen was powered by six Wright Cyclone engines of 1,600 horsepower (1,200 kW) each. The plane survived in limited numbers until September 10, 1955, a solid ten years after the end of the war. However, the Latécoère 631 ultimately failed because it was unreliable and uneconomic to operate.

Omsk Oblast ( Russian : О́мская о́бласть , romanized :   Omskaya oblast' ) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast ), located in southwestern Siberia . The oblast has an area of 139,700 square kilometers (53,900   sq   mi) . Its population is 1,977,665 ( 2010 Census ) [9] with the majority, 1.12 million, living in Omsk , the administrative center .

The oblast borders Tyumen Oblast in the north and west, Novosibirsk Oblast and Tomsk Oblast in the east, and Kazakhstan in the south.

Omsk Oblast shares borders with Kazakhstan ( North Kazakhstan Region and Pavlodar Region ) to the south, Tyumen Oblast in the west and Novosibirsk Oblast and Tomsk Oblast in the east. It is included in the Siberian Federal District .

The territory stretches for 600   km (370   mi) from north to south and 300   km (190   mi) from west to east. The main water artery is the Irtysh River and its tributaries the Ishim , Om , Osha , and Tara Rivers. The region is located in the West Siberian Plain , consisting of mostly flat terrain. In the south is the Ishim Plain , gradually turning into steppe, forest and swampy taiga to the north. The soil is sandy and silty. [10] Along the Irtysh River, in t. N. Irtysh region, there is an "oasis" microclimate, with a wooded landscape and gullies. There, the most fertile land in the region can be found. The Omsk region contains many lakes, the largest of which are Tenis -Saltaim, Ik, Ebeyty , Ulzhay and Tobol-Kushly.

The highest elevation in the Omsk region - about 150   m (490   ft) Upland village, the lowest elevation is the water's edge on the Irtysh - 41 metres (135   ft) , near the village of Little Beach. [ clarification needed ]

The property is located in Omsk region 28 specially protected natural territories of regional destinations. Including parks in Bolshereche and Omsk ("Bird's harbor"). [ clarification needed ]

The oblast has a classic continental climate, with cold, snowy winters and hot, dry summers. Average January temperatures range from −42 to −30   °C (−44 to −22   °F) . Average July temperatures range from 25 to 28   °C (77 to 82   °F) and can reach up to 35   °C (95   °F) and even 40   °C (104   °F) . Annual rainfall averages 300–400   mm (12–16   in) . Sunny days predominate.

The southern plains have notably longer and warmer summers and a delayed onset of freezing temperatures. They are also significantly drier than the northern forests, receiving only 250–300   mm (9.8–11.8   in) precipitation annually. Winters, however, are as severe on the plains as they are further north. Spring rains are rare, but late spring freezes are not. The early part of the summer is frequently dominated by hot, dry southern winds.

As of 1   February   2016 , [ update ] on the territory of the Omsk region, there are 35 areas that have the status of protected areas (PAs), regional and local importance.

Archeological findings indicate that the present day territory of the oblast has been inhabited for the last 14,000 years. Neolithic societies in the area lived by fishing and hunting. About three thousand years ago, pastoralism began to take hold. Ust'-Ishim man , the remains of a man that lived 45,000 years ago, was discovered in Omsk Oblast.

Various Turkic states dominated the area throughout the Medieval era. The most notable of these were the Western Turkic Khaganate and the Siberian Khanate . Siberian Tatars , Mongols , Khanty and Mansi tribes, along with others, inhabited the territory.

The Russian history of Omsk began with the 1584 arrival of a Cossack force under the command of ataman Yermak Timofeyevich , who defeated local rulers and established nominal Russian control of the area. To support further expansion tsars Feodor I and Boris Godunov initiated the construction of fortified settlements and military outposts in the south of Siberia in order to defend their subjects from raiding nomadic tribesmen and to exert authority over local populations, specifically over the tribute-paying Siberian Tatars of The Baraba Lands. The first permanent Russian settlement in the region, the city of Tara , was founded in 1594, soon it began to play an important part in fur trade that connected Russia with Central Asia and China.

In 1716 a fortress was constructed at the confluence of the Om and Irtysh rivers on the orders of sublieutenant Ivan Bugholtz. The fortress would form the nucleus for the development of the future city of Omsk. By the second half of the 18th century, Omsk fortress was the largest building of any kind in the eastern part of Russia.

As Russian settlements continued to spread through the Yenisei , Tobol and Irtysh watersheds in the course of the 18th century, so did the development of the Omsk and the surrounding region. In 1753 a customs post was established to tax goods brought into the city by the ever-increasing trade with Kazakh tribesmen. In 1764, when the Siberian provinces of Russia were organized into two governorates with centers in Irkutsk and Tobolsk , the city of Tara and the fortress of Omsk were assigned to the latter. In 1780, on the orders of Catherine the Great the fortress was transferred to Kolyvan Oblast . By this time Omsk had grown to the size of a small city, however, from 1797 to 1804 it did not possess its own uyezd .

In 1804, the territories surrounding Omsk were organized into the Omsk Okrug . The city rose to prominence when Siberia was once again reorganized in 1822, Omsk became the administrative center of the General Governorate of Eastern Siberia rising above the old center of Siberia, Tobolsk. The new governorate was divided into oblasts around the cities of Omsk, Petropavlovsk, Semipalatinsk and Ust-Kamenogrsk populated by Russian colonists and okrugs populated by Kazakh nomads. In subsequent reforms the name of the Oblast was changed repeatedly to The Oblast of The Siberian Kyrgyz (1854), Akmolinsk Oblast (1868), and Omsk Oblast (1917) before finally reverting to the Omsk Governorate in 1918. The authority of the oblast followed further expansion of the empire to Central Asia and included significant parts of modern-day Kazakhstan .

In the 19th century, Omsk, given its strong system of frontier fortresses, became notorious as a premier destination for political exiles and prisoners from the European part of the Russian Empire. Decembrists , Polish rebels , French prisoners of war and political activists of every stripe found their way to Siberia. Among them was Fyodor Dostoyevsky , who spent four years (1850–1854) at the Omsk prison. [11]

The early nineteenth century also saw the growth of industry in the city and in the rest of the Irtysh basin. The Siberian Cossack Army was headquartered in Omsk after 1808 and contributed to the development of the city, by the beginning of the 20th century the Cossacks were a dominant component in the society of both the city of Omsk and the surrounding lands, having reached a population of 174 thousand and holding title to five million hectares of agricultural land. The 18th and 19th centuries also saw the influx of a significant number of German immigrants both from Russia's Volga Regions and from abroad.

In 1925 the Omsk governorate was dissolved into the newly formed Siberian Krai and again reorganized, this time as an Oblast by order of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee on 7 December 1934. Parts of the Ob-Irtysh Oblast and the West Siberian Krai as well as the southern part of Chelyabinsk Oblast were given over to Omsk. In 1943, Kurgan Oblast created from the western portion of the Chelyabinsk Oblast also got a number of Omsk territories. In 1944, the northern part of the Omsk Oblast along with the districts previously transferred to Kurgan became newly established Tyumen Oblast that included Khanty-Mansi and Yamalo-Nenets autonomous okrugs.

The 1950s saw the creation of the petroleum processing industry, as well as the development of various high-technology facilities that came to define the economy of the Oblast for the remainder of the century.

With the dissolution of the Soviet Union the oblast became part of the newly independent Russian Federation. The independence of Kazakhstan gave Omsk an international border to the south, while continued federal policy aiming to rectify the effects of Stalin era population transfers led to the creation of a national German district in an area with a significant, although not a majority, German population around the town of Azovo . On 19 May 1996 Omsk Oblast signed a power-sharing agreement with the federal government, granting it autonomy. [12] This agreement would be abolished on 21 December 2001. [13]

During the Soviet period, the high authority in the oblast was shared between three persons: The first secretary of the Omsk CPSU Committee (who in reality had the biggest authority), the chairman of the oblast Soviet (legislative power), and the Chairman of the oblast Executive Committee (executive power). Since 1991, CPSU lost all the power, and the head of the Oblast administration, and eventually the governor was appointed/elected alongside elected regional parliament .

The politics in the oblast is governed by the Charter of Omsk Oblast. The laws within the authority of the oblast are passed by the Legislative Assembly of Omsk Oblast which is the legislative (representative) body. The highest executive body is the Omsk Oblast Administration. It also includes the executive bodies of the subdivisions such as districts, and is responsible for the daily administration. The Oblast administration supports the activities of the Governor who is the head of the oblast and acts as guarantor of the observance of the Charter in accordance with the Constitution of Russia .

As of 18 January 2019, the departmental register of registered non-profit organizations of the Office of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation for the Omsk Oblast contains information on 2537 non-profit organizations, including 1332 public associations (national associations - 60, regional branches of political parties - 46, trade unions - 328, children's and youth public associations - 55), 308 religious organizations, 30 Cossack societies, and 20 public associations of Cossacks. For example, in the Omsk Oblast there are regional branches of the political parties United Russia , A Just Russia , the Communist Party of the Russian Federation , and others. [14]

As of 2008 , [ update ] Omsk Oblast is the 23rd largest economy in Russia, with a gross regional product of 10.2 billion dollars.

The economy of Omsk Oblast is heavily industrial, with well developed, and growing, service and financial sectors. Agriculture represents a smaller, but still significant, portion of the economy.

Economic activity is concentrated in Omsk, with over sixty-six thousand private enterprises registered, ranging from small-scale retailers to billion-dollar manufacturing. [15]

Omsk was ranked by Forbes as the 6th-best city in Russia for business in 2008, an improvement over its 20th-place ranking the previous year. [16]

The oblast and city governments have made efforts to improve the business climate and foster small enterprise through various incentives and government programs designed to ease the bureaucratic red-tape, a notorious feature of Russian business life, and to generate cooperation within the business community. [17]

The bulk of industrial output, as of 2009, is concentrated in food and tobacco processing ($900 million), hydrocarbon processing ($6.7 billion), chemical manufacturing ($500 m), plastics manufacturing ($200 m) and the manufacture of electrical components ($280 m). The remainder of the economy is dominated by the retail sector and agriculture.

The largest industrial enterprises include the aerospace manufacturer Polyot , the Omsk Aggregate Plant, the agricultural manufacturer Sibzavod, Omsk Baranov Motorworks, and Omsktransmash , which manufactures the T-80 main battle tank. Additionally, Omsk Rubber, the Technical Hydrocarbon Plant, Omsk-Polymer and Omsk Hydrocarbon Processing Plant, represent the petroleum and hydrocarbon industry. Omsk Hydrocarbon is one of the most important oil refineries in Russia. [18]

The oblast operates four thermal power plants, which makes it largely self-sufficient from the standpoint of energy generation.

Agricultural production is concentrated in the Isil'rul'skii District and produces wheat, barley, flax, sunflower, potato, various fruits and vegetables as well as meat, poultry and dairy products.

The food processing sector includes several breweries, a distillery and numerous food packaging enterprises.
