After a quiet opening day of the hearing, Manchester City and the Premier League continues in the court today over the 115 allegations of financial wrongdoings.

Man City vehemently deny breaching regulations and are confident they will be proved correct. The Premier League is also holding its ground too, so expect to see appeals lodged against the verdict given the seismic impact any outcome will have.

The charges themselves relate to alleged illicit financing outside of Premier League constraints and un-cooperation with league officials over the period between 2009 to 2018. With this being an unprecedented case, if City are found guilty punishments could be unlimited.

That means relegation, the stripping of titles, transfer embargoes and points deductions could all be on the table. If City come out victorious, serious questions about the credibility of the Premier League's governance will be asked in light of the looming possibility of an independent regulator. It's all or nothing for both parties.

Guardiola: "All other clubs want us sanctioned"

Speaking on Friday, Pep Guardiola said he feels as though all other 19 Premier League clubs want Man City to be sanctioned.

He was responding to comments from La Liga president Javier Tebas, who claimed that the English clubs he had spoken to had indicated a desire to see the Blues punished.

"Maybe he's right. For the fact that all the Premier League teams want us to be sanctioned, that is for sure," Guardiola began .

Secret meeting with players

Former Blues defender Aymeric Laporte has opened up on what club directors told Man City players on the day the charges were levelled.

The allegations were first published in February 2023 and only 18 months later is the independent panel hearing into the case taking place.

Back on the day in question, CEO Ferran Soriano and sporting director Txiki Begiristain held a meeting with players and staff to reassure them soon after news of the charges dropped.

Day 2 is underway

Lord Pannick KC has arrived for day 2 of the legal battle between Man City and the Premier League.

How long will it take?

Well, no-one actually knows. The hearing is expected to take 10 weeks, initially, but the verdict isn't expected to be delivered until early 2025.

To pinpoint an accurate end date is somewhat impossible.

Real Madrid awaiting outcome

Away from the trial, the outcome of the hearing could play a role in Manchester City's hopes of keeping hold of Rodri. According to The Athletic , Real Madrid are willing to wait for the outcome of the charges before making a move for the midfielder.

It's reported that Madrid's thinking is if City receive a major punishment, there could be a real opportunity for them to bring Rodri back to Spain.

Lawyer fighting both corners

The Times has named the lawyers who are reportedly representing both sides.

Lord Pannick KC has already been identified but the report says Philip Marshall KC of Serle Court and Paul Harris KC from Monckton Chambers are also representing Man City. Law firm Clifford Chance has also been connected.

As for the Premier League, Adam Lewis KC has been outlined as one of the lawyers employed, having worked on the team for previous cases against Everton.

He and colleague Andrew Hunter KC, who - like Pannick - are from Blackstone Chambers, are set to be joined by 'at least half a dozen juniors', so says the report.

Another firm - Bird & Bird - have apparently been working with the Premier League on the case.

Former owner delivers verdict

Former Manchester City chairman David Bernstein has delivered his verdict on the Premier League's independent hearing over the club's 115 alleged charges.

Bernstein, who was chairman between 1998 and 2003, told Sky Sports: "I am not surprised it has got to this stage. There are 115 charges, they cover a wide period of time, and on the surface they are serious charges and have to be answered.

"In a way, they should have got this resolved somewhat earlier but these things do take time."

Potential punishments

Of course, the fact that this case is one that we have never seen before, the scope for punishment is unknown. Possible relegation and the stripping of titles have all been touted.

However, it is unclear what legislative scope the Premier League truly has in regards to punishments, given an independent panel said the league was not justified in handing Everton a 12-point deduction earlier this year, seeing it reduced to six points based on previous EFL cases.

So even the handing out of punishments might not be so simple.

What we know so far

There's obviously loads of information out there on what the lawyers will be discussing. In a nutsell, here's a summary.

Hello and welcome to day 2 of the rollercoaster that is Manchester City vs the Premier League.

Stick with us. Like yesterday, there was plenty to dig your teeth in so we'll give you a round-up of the last 24 hours and what today will hold.

Who is Lord Pannick?

The Lord Pannick KC, to give David Philip Pannick his full title, is the barrister leading Manchester City's legal team at the International Dispute Resolution Centre in the city of London for the next ten weeks as the independent hearing into the Premier League's 115 charges against them takes place.

Pannick, 68, arrived at the IDRC, which lies in the shadow of St Paul’s Cathedral, for the start of this case on Monday morning sporting a dark blue tie with a sky blue design. The Blackstone Chambers advocate previously represented City when they successfully overturned a two-year ban from European competition after being found guilty of breaking UEFA's Financial Fair Play rules at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

When can we expect the outcome?

Those hoping for a speedy resolution to the hearing will be highly disappointed.

The hearing itself is expected to last a couple of months but the verdict is not going to be immediate.

MEN Sport understands it will not be until next year at the earliest that we discover City's fate.

Why City hearing is in private

While Premier League clubs and the outside world of media and supporters are frustrated by the uncertainty and secretive nature of the hearing, the division and City are well within their rights to have a behind closer doors trial.

According to the Premier League's handbook, which all participating clubs sign up to, hearings are held in front of a panel of three individuals in private.

We shall only know the details of this hearing when the verdict is delivered.

Premier League rivals 'frustrated' by secrecy

The Telegraph understands some of City's unnamed Premier League rivals have grown frustrated by the 'secrecy' surrounding the hearing into the FFP charges.

It is believed they are unhappy at the lack of official information they have access to as they await the verdict.

What City players were told after charges received

Speaking to the Daily Mail , former City defender Aymeric Laporte explained that Txiki Begiristain and Ferran Soriano both came to visit the squad after news of the charges broke.

The sporting director (Txiki Begiristain) and the CEO (Ferran Soriano) came and told all the players and staff that we can all be very calm because not one rule has been broken by Man City. They told us everything was fine so that’s why we all think City will be fine. I don’t think there will be any issues. Like Pep Guardiola always says, if something wrong has been done, they will have to pay for it.

How City could implement themselves with PSR again

There had been some concern that even if City were successful with their challenge against the Premier League charges, they could find themselves in trouble over FFP and Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) again like Everton.

However, City's former legal advisor Stefan Borson has told Football Insider that is unlikely to be the case unless they are relegated.

I suspect there’s no PSR issue in the near term. Clearly, that would change if they were unsuccessful in the 115 situation. If they were, let’s say relegated then clearly that’s going to change everything. But if that doesn’t happen then I think they’ve got a lot of capacity on PSR.

City reassured they will have the best lawyers

Speaking to Sky Sports , former City chairman David Bernstein is adamant the Blues will have appointed the best legal team for the Premier League hearing.

On the surface, these are serious charges and there has to be answers. I think this should have been heard earlier but these things do take time. I am a City fan and I am worried. These are serious charges but City will have the best lawyers, they will defend themselves as they absolutely have the right to do and we will see. This is really heavy stuff and what concerns me is that City could have their record tarnished by all this and that is really, really sad. We shall see what happens and we may find that they are not guilty of these things.

Premier League panel does not have the power to dish out major punishment

One of the big talking points has been whether City will be relegated to the Championship, League One, League Two or National League if found guilty of the charges.

According to Daily Telegraph reporter Ben Rumsby , while the panel could expel City from the Premier League, they could not automatically place them in the EFL or National League.

The Blues would have to apply for membership in the EFL first and the division is under no obligation to accept them should they wish not to.

The Premier League has created vacuum for speculation

No matter which way this hearing goes, one thing that is for certain is how bad a light the Premier League has found itself in throughout this saga.

Their constant delaying of the hearing created a vacuum of speculation which was ultimately filled by those adamant City are guilty before the court case even began.

You would hope the Premier League learns a lesson from all this regarding the handling of charges and the subsequent hearings but let's not hold our breaths.

Guardiola has already given perfect response to Tebas

City's boss is no stranger to receiving criticism from La Liga president Javier Tebas and today has been no exception as he argued that the Blues should receive the sanctions 'they deserve'.

Asked to comment a couple of days ago on the theory that Premier League teams want to see City punished, Guardiola gave the perfect response.

Maybe he's right. For the fact that all the Premier League teams want us to be sanctioned, that is for sure. I agree with Tebas for the first time, and hopefully the last. I am pretty sure I agree with that. That's why I say to Mr Tebas and the Premier League teams: wait for the independent panel. Justice is there in a modern democracy so yeah, wait for the decision, it's not more complicated than that.

The day everything changes

So today is the day we've all been waiting for. The day everything changes... but also nothing changes.

City have been working towards this trial to clear their name, while the Premier League have presumably had their case ready for some time.

It feels like an exciting development, but in reality it's the latest step in a process we won't see. And we won't know what's happened in that courtroom for another few months.

It feels significant to know that the case is being heard as we speak. But while it's an opportunity to recap all the facts of the case, it's also a reminder of how little we know.

All the important (and boring) details will be discussed in the coming weeks, and it's only when the verdict is published we will get to know what's being said.

What punishment City could face if guilty?

At this stage, it is a big IF in terms of deciding whether City are guilty of the charges put forward or not.

However, should the Premier League win this court case, their punishment could be massive.

A points deduction of up to 100 points has been mooted as well as potential expulsion from the Premier League altogether but that frightening possibility is some way down the line at this stage.

Furthermore, The Times has named the lawyers who are reportedly representing both sides.

Deadline outlined

The Times is reporting that, should any party involved in the hearing appeal the initial verdict, it is hoped that the process will be completed by the end of the season.

That would mean any points deduction sanctioned on Man City, should they be found guilty, would likely come into force this season, unless it is deferred to next season.

The potential punishments that could be handed down are thought to be unlimited, meaning the stripping of titles and relegation might also be on the cards, albeit these prospects are still largely unclear.

Daily cost of Man City hearing

As mentioned earlier, reports suggest that the hearing is taking place at the International Dispute Resolution Centre in London, near St Paul's Cathedral.

As per the building's website, costs of hiring out one of the main rooms for a day run into the thousands.

One of these rooms - of which there are more than 70 - can cost between £1,125 and £4,845 per day depending on its size and how many people are involved.

As for catering, sandwiches price at £13.95 with refreshments setting you back £11.95, while you will be charged £1 for printing out a single sheet of paper.

La Liga chief speaks out on Man City again

La Liga president Javier Tebas has once again addressed Man City's legal battle, stating the Premier League should hand out according punishments on the club if they are found guilty.

This comes after he revealed that he had spoken to several Premier League clubs who, he claims, wish to see Man City sanctioned. And now, speaking to Give Me Sport , Tebas has laid out more of his thoughts.

“The Premier League shouldn't give in to pressure, right? Manchester City is just another club, and when you lead an association, you have to act. “The Premier League shouldn't differentiate between big or small, or important and ‘non-important’, clubs. "Manchester City is a member of the association that has committed irregularities and should receive the sanction it deserves. If not, the competition's authority will be lost.”

Premier League clubs 'frustrated' by secrecy

A report from the Telegraph says Premier League clubs are frustrated at the secrecy surrounding the legal case between the League and Man City.

The precise location of the meeting is being kept under wraps with only a basic list of the breaches being made public, much to the annoyance of the other top-flight clubs, it says.

It is likely that little information about the case gets out throughout the process but the report suggests some judgements during the hearing could be shared "as deemed 'appropriate'".

Man City-Premier League hearing location

As Man City begin their defence against charges from the Premier League, not much has been said about the location of the hearing.

A report from the Mail Online , however, has claimed that the hearing is taking place at the International Dispute Resolution Centre in London.

The location is thought to be approximately a two-minute walk from St Paul's Cathedral in central London.

Lawyers arrive

Lord Pannick KC has been spotted arriving as Man City's defence against the charges from the Premier League begins.

TheLawyer.com have reported that Pannick, of Blackstone Chambers, has been joined by Gary Oliver to represent City in their defence of the charges.

Pannick and Oliver have also reportedly been joined by Philip Marshall KC and James Mather of Serle Court and will also be representing City.
