Vintage Photos of Clark Lake, Jackson County, Michigan: 1900-1950s

Clark Lake in Jackson County has been one of the county's biggest draws since the 1800s. Parties, swimming, boating, fishing, entertainment...it was (and still is) all there. In the past it was also known as “Clark's Lake” and “Clarklake”....but the moniker that has been the most widely accepted is “Clark Lake”.

In 1824, a government surveyor from Monroe, Robert Clark, came here and was the man responsible for the name. In 1833, George Stranahan was the first to settle here – north side, west end – and a village began to grow. It was also a railway station on the Cincinnati, Jackson & Mackinaw Railroad known as “Clarklake”.

According to Clark Lake Spirit , the very first park in Jackson County was the Clark Lake County Park on the east end. It was in the spring of 1825 when a member of the County Board of Supervisors, Emmett Windle, “produced a map to show that many sections of county lakes had been fenced off, barring bathers from beaches.” To retaliate, he came up with a plan to implement a good number of county parks along the lakes of Jackson County. “As a result of his vision, the Jackson County Park system was established.” And the Clark Lake County Park became the first in June 1825.

Own a historic home with luxury updates for $1.64M on a crystal-clear Michigan lake

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – One of the oldest homes on a crystal-clear Jackson County lake is on the market.

The home at 1878 Q Lane is located on the shores of Clark Lake in Columbia Township. Originally built in 1899, the home has grown from a two-story summer log cabin into a 5,300-square-foot modern lake house.

Listed at $1,639,000 by Realtor Jennifer Chmielewski of ERA Reardon Realty , it’s MLive’s House of the Week. Homes from across the state are featured each Wednesday.

The cabin was originally part of a summer estate owned by Clarence Hayes, founder of Hayes Wheel Company, business partner to Henry Ford and the namesake of Jackson’s Hayes Hotel. The family of current owner Pat Collins purchased the home in the 1950s, using it for years as a summer home before adding major additions in 1998 and 2017 that more than doubled the home’s floor space.

Guests enter the home through side-lit doors into a grand foyer which spills into the billiards room - an open-concept space highlighted by hardwood wainscoting, a crystal chandelier and a mezzanine balcony that rings the upper level of the room.

The open-concept ground floor leads guests past a chef’s kitchen into a well-lit formal dining area whose white wood accents echo Cape Cod charm.

As guests round the corner past a sitting area, they enter the 2,300-square-foot footprint of the original log cabin. In what Connelly calls the “log room,” the home’s original woodwork has been preserved - bark and all.

The hardwood log walls, joists, handrails and banisters come from a logging camp owned by Hayes near Grayling that supplied much of the lumber used in the wooden wheels of Ford’s Model T.

Built-in cabinetry, cedar wall paneling and a fieldstone-lined fireplace highlight the cabin-like family room, which also features a mezzanine level and vaulted ceiling with exposed beams.

The space that once served as the 1899 cabin’s front porch is now an enclosed sitting room featuring wood paneling, a fieldstone bar and views over the patio and Clark Lake.

A ground-floor bedroom suite located just off the family room features a sauna that connects to the outdoor patio, which features a hot tub and fire pit overlooking the home’s lake frontage and 180-foot dock.

“Our beach would be widely accepted as the finest beach available on Clark Lake,” Collins said. “As you step into the water, it’s only a foot deep… but we can accommodate any type of boat from a ski boat to a large offshore-style boat.”

Immediately to the west of the home is the Clark Lake Yacht Club, which was originally part of the same property under Hayes’ ownership before splitting off in the 1930s. Collins said the club, which hosts Hobie catamaran and sailboat races, is “the greatest neighbor you could have.”

“They’re a quiet conservative group of sailors,” Collins said. “For anybody who has an interest in getting into sailing or meeting a lot of people in a very nice social setting this is a great place.”

The home’s upper level features five bedrooms, including a primary suite with French doors and a jet tub, as well as a walk-in closet and additional storage above the 4-car garage. The central mezzanine balcony overlooks the billiards room and offers a sitting area over the foyer.

Additional second-floor bedrooms offer views over the lake and surrounding woods, and a pair of office spaces could serve as additional bedrooms, increasing the overall count to seven rooms.

The home also features an attached four-car garage with a separate door fit for a trailer or boat up to 30 feet. Recent updates include an all-new HVAC system, a recently re-poured concrete drive and a newly-shingled roof.

The 0.6-acre property includes about 100 feet of frontage on Clark Lake, an all-sports lake known for its crystal-clear waters and the annual Raft-O-Rama festival.

TREASURER REPORT

What a Difference a Day Makes. Namely the extra day of July 4th beer tent operation that we had last year but not this year. In short, the club made 10% more than the one-day beer tent in 2022, but only 75% of the two-day beer tent in 2023. Boo hoo. On the other hand, we made over $8K net income for the month, and are right about on plan for the year. What's more, we are coming close to $150K in the bank. Not so boo hoo. Let's have a luau to celebrate.
