Established in 1987. Purchased the original "Lone Star" riverboat in 1987. Lone Star Riverboat, Inc. has grown the business into a full-time operation, now featuring four boats that are all environmentally-friendly battery powered vessels. We added the Little Star in 2000 and the Southern Star in 2007 and now the Northern Star in 2017 to be used for nightly sunset/bat watching cruises or 1 hour private parties. We use the Lone Star for our weekend sightseeing cruises at 12:30 and 3 pm and our Friday night moonlight cruise at 10:30 pm and private charters for up to 100 guests. We are the original sunset/bat watching cruise on Lake Lady Bird. Our Bat Watching public cruises are from March-October, other cruises from March - December and January to March. We offer private charters on the Lone Star, any time year -round. …

It is not requires because the lake is shallow but there is a life jacket for everyone on the boat if you choose to wear one!

Directions on the website were clear and accurate. Reservations were super easy to make. Prices were super reasonable. The tour guide was personable, informative, funny and smart. We saw lots of bats! I've lived in Austin for 7 years and this was my first time on the boat. Much better than going to watch from the bridge.

Thank you for choosing us to enjoy the bat experience! Our tours are very affordable and family friendly and so glad you had a nice time and hope to see you again.

My experience was very mediocre. Let's start with the information provided prior to our scheduled tour. I was happy that they gave several parking options, however, as tourists from out of town we did not know the lay of the land. The first and free option was to park at Vic Mathias Shores. I didn't review the map fully, as they suggested, so it was my own fault that we parked at the complete opposite side of the park requiring us to walk 15 minutes to the dock. (Just a warning to others NOT to do this.) We made it to the dock with time to spare and check-in was seamless. All we had to do was give our names. There were 4 boats to choose from: one double-decker with tables and chairs, two medium-sized boats with just chairs and one smaller boat with just chairs. We chose one of the mid-sized boats, but later wished that we'd chosen the double-decker because of the tables. You are allowed to bring drinks onboard, but the seating was very cramped. It would have been nice to have a table. Some of the staff were loud and rowdy prior to departure. I listened as they made snide remarks about the customers not listening and not signing the waiver, as instructed. When we checked in, we were told to choose a boat and find a seat. I first heard mention of the waiver AFTER we had already boarded and gotten ourselves comfortable. We did not make any extra effort to get off and sign the waiver, so if that is important to them, they might want to streamline that process to ensure they get all of the required signatures. The captain of the double-decker boat gave a safety speech, but it sounded like he was speaking to just the passengers of his boat. I listened but expected our captain to give a speech too. He did not. I have no clue where our life vests were, but we were told that the water was fairly shallow, and we could probably stand and walk out of the lake in an emergency situation. The boat ride itself was peaceful, leisurely and informative. AND due to the presence of the bat colony, there were little to no insects bothering us while on the water. The biggest disappointment came when the bats didn't emerge within the allotted timeframe and our captain took a vote asking who wanted to stay out longer or return to the dock. I'm almost certain that those seated in front of me did not even hear what he said. I think HE was ready to go home! We saw very few "scout" bats. They come out to check the scenery before letting the colony know that it is safe to emerge. We did not make it to that point because our captain took us back to the dock. If I were to do this again, I would rent a kayak or duck boat and take it out ourselves so that we're in control of when we go in or give up for the night, but for $14 per person, this wasn't too bad.

As of now, the bats are putting on just a fair show, hope you enjoyed your narration and learned a bit about Austin and the bats too. Fantastic experience! We are locals that wanted to celebrate my son's HS graduation night in a special way. This was one of the coolest outings we've had around town. Our tour guide was entertaining and thoughtful and even got us to cover from the rain shower that decided to hit just as we got started. We saw some great bats, our beautiful Austin skyline as a backdrop and learned some cool facts about our buildings and the cool bats! We already have plans to book another trip over the summer!

This riverboat tour to see the bat bridge was awesome! Our tour guide was hilarious and very entertaining. He gave us a history of the buildings in Austin and the river. We watched the bats fly out from their homs in the bridge it was such a cool thing to see! I highly recommend this tour!!

We enjoyed our excursion here. We had not seen Austin's famous bat colony before, and this is a nice way to do it. It's BYOB if your want to bring a beer cooler. But it's a family friendly event, not a party boat, so keep that in mind, too. They made bottled water, Sprite and Coke available for $3 each. They start boarding 45 minutes before they depart. Show up early to sit together if you're a larger party. We spent two hours on the boat, in total, as we arrived just as they opened the doors to start boarding (we were in the boat from 7:30 to 9:30 but on the actual tour from 8:20 to 9:20). You sit in a plastic chair on the deck. We weren't pooped on, but that can happen, so be prepared for that. Maybe bring wet wipes just in case? But it didn't seem to be a problem for anyone on our trip. Bats are not 100% predictable. They don't do the exact same thing at the exact same time every evening. They're small and you won't see them up close. But there were 750,000 of them there when we visited and they definitely started swarming. Pretty cool. The video I took came out pretty good but I didn't get a good photograph of the bats. I tried, but the 2.5x optical zoom in my iPhone wasn't quite enough for a photo but somehow did pretty well in the video. The reason is (and you can probably configure this), shutter speed slows when it's darker, and with a longer exposure, you won't capture anything that's moving. The boat captain is entertaining and informative, and you'll learn a few things about Austin, which we enjoyed. The pictures I took that came out well were of the Austin skyline. You may not feel a need to do this again after you've done it once. But it's not a bad way to spend a couple of hours and the price is right :-)

Lone Star Riverboat Cruises was mostly a good experience. It was a company funded outing in the evening after Day 1 of our sales meeting (Sure was a nice looong walk to there from the Austin Hilton...but as they say "Everything is bigger in Texas!") LOL! The food was pretty good - Chicken and Beef Burritos wraps with rice and the bar was pretty well stocked considering the somewhat small size of the boat. The bartender was cool as well. The bat tour under the bridge was pretty cool....outside of a Batman movie, I've never seen such a large swarm! They kinda circled from the bottom of the bridge over the top where people were walking across! No one on the bridge ran or freaked out...guess they're used to it? LOL!!! The only thing I really didn't care for was narrow and steep steps to go up and down to and from the Lower and Upper Levels. Definitely advise to hold the railings with BOTH hands while ascending or descending the stairs and walk slowly!

We went on the Bat Boat ride. It was so fun and our "speaking captain" was great! She gave background on the bats and downtown Austin. For $14 a ticket it was well worth it.

bridge with the bats

So happy you all had a magical time, thank you and hope to see you again!

Was visiting Austin and wanted to have a nice boat cruise. I was super sad that I booked this boat a week after the bats were supposed to leave (apparently Austin tourist spot is watching bats at night). BUT to my surprise I was able to still see the bats, albeit it being November and a lot of them migrating. But now to the experience. The booking was super simple, about $13 per person. I showed up early and got a nice spot. The boat is BYOB so bring a drink or a snack. The tour lasts an hour and we got to see a lot of different buildings, the nearby park, and the bridge with the bats. The captain, Melissa, was super corny and it was so silly and hilarious . Definitely would recommend to anyone coming here

Lone star river boat offers a spectacular night on the water with our bat watching tours! It is a spectacular sight to see the bats emerge from the bridge at sunset! An estimated 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats live under the Congress Avenue Bridge. It is the largest urban colony in North America, recognized by National Geographic, The Discovery Channel, and various other news media. Come relax on the lake, observe our unusual attraction, and listen to the narration and history provided by your captain.

All bat watching cruises will be on one of our THREE smaller boats, The Southern Star, The Northern Star or The Little Star. Most public sightseeing cruises will be on The Lone Star.

The lone star riverboat weekend sightseeing cruise.

Hop aboard the Lone Star Riverboat Sightseeing Cruise to take in the beauty of Austin’s Lady Bird Lake. Travel down the water on this environmentally-friendly electric double-decker boat (with an air-conditioned lower level) and enjoy a relaxing, kid-friendly, one-hour cruise, narrated by a guide who shares lots of interesting knowledge and trivia about the sights along the water.

When I told my boys (ages 5, 7, and 9) that we’d be taking a boat ride downtown, they were all very excited! I loved knowing that it was a one-hour tour (sounded like a perfect amount of time), and I knew it would be cool to see views of Austin that we could only appreciate from the water.

The boat dock is located just next to Auditorium Shores, and when we arrived, were happy to find ample, easy free parking in the Auditorium Shores lot without any trouble at all. (Apparently, hot summer afternoons are not a popular time for hitting the hike & bike trail, with reason).

We were told we could board the boat at 2:15 p.m. and that seating would be first come, first served. So we got there right around that time and were among the first on the boat. My family had a bit of a disagreement about where to sit (downstairs is air-conditioned, and the top level is open-air but in the hot afternoon sun). So we chose a table in the a/c, and felt pretty good about that decision.

Do take note that the downstairs seats were full by 2:30 p.m. So if you know you’re going to want to sit inside, be sure to get there early. Once the boat starts moving, there is a little bit of breeze on the top, and we did go back and forth between levels to get views from above.

Everyone is welcome to bring their own snacks, picnics, etc. It’s totally BYOB. But there is a little cash bar downstairs that sells sodas and juice if you find yourself needing a beverage. You’ll find restrooms on the bottom level, too.

The entire ride is so very kid-friendly, and it’s really fun to feel like a tourist in your own town. The guide provided some interesting facts about Austin and Lady Bird Lake that you we had not previously known.

The kids loved going under the Congress Ave. Bat Bridge, and hearing the sounds of the bats. We enjoyed it so much, in fact, that we plan to take one of their Bat Watching Sunset Cruises soon!

Daily Bat Watching Sunset Cruises Climb aboard the Little Star, Northern Star and Southern Star Daily (March – October) for a spectacular sight to see the bats emerge from the bridge at sunset! An estimated 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats live under the Congress Avenue Bridge. Tours last 1 hour and start 30 minutes before sunset! I would give a higher rating if I could. I can't remember our tour guides name, but she did a fantastic job. This was our first Austin activity as a group (bachelor party) and I can't think of a better way to start our visit. If someone tells you that going to see the bats isn't worth it, don't believe a word they say. It was incredible and I will absolutely be doing it again. Thank you, Lone Star!

Great way to see the bats in Austin! Tour Guide was entertaining and knowledgeable. This was on my husband's bucket list and he enjoyed every minute of it!!

Even though we didn’t see the horde of bats as seen in so many of the pictures, the tour guide, Captain Toby was worth the price of admission. So much fun information about the Austin skyline in addition to the bats themselves. We had to give up as it looked like they weren’t coming out in the rain, but on our walk back to the car we stopped on the path under the bridge and witnessed groups of bats flying around the bridge pillars and into the nearby trees. It was very cool. Would definitely recommend the boat tour over standing in the bridge or a nearby patch of grass. Rainy conditions aside, our group of 3 really enjoyed it.

Had a great experience on the riverboat sunset bat tour! It's a little early in the year to see all the bats but we saw a few hundred! The guide told us that right now the bats are pregnant, and once they have their babies later in the summer, there will be up to a billion bats out! Excited to do this again!

Took the sunset bat tour after hearing it’s a ‘must do’ when visiting Austin and we had a great time once we got moving. The boat captain was great. She had an immense sense of humour and was very knowledge as we went up and down the lake on a little tour before viewing the bats. It was a surreal experience to see all the bats emerge from under the bridge. I was expecting a mass exodus but they gradually emerged and you need to be mindful that it’s nature and can be different day by day. The only slight criticism was, upon arrival, you’re left on the small boat in the heat for well over an hour before you depart. Overall we had a great time and would recommend the tour when on a visit to Austin.

The name might not be overly original but Portugal’s Novo Banco (New Bank) could live up to the billing for investors. The bank is what remains after the calamitous break-up and bailout of Banco Espírito Santo (BES) in 2014. The country’s second-largest bank at the time failed spectacularly and had to be placed into resolution. Rebirth has been the story since. With a lengthy government-backed bailout practically complete, Novo Banco could be the first European bank initial public offering in years.

Portugal is sharing in the broader comeback enjoyed by what was once Europe’s problematic periphery. Alongside countries such as Italy, Spain and Greece, it is outperforming economically. That is especially true when it comes to banks, which after years in the doldrums have won the attention of investors thanks to higher interest rates. With balance sheets cleaned up and stricter lending standards, Europe’s problem banks now appear to be some of those best positioned for growth. If successful, a Novo Banco IPO would capitalise on near-peak profits and renewed interest in the sector.

Novo Banco is the country’s fourth largest bank, focused on individuals and SMEs with a 15 per cent share in corporate lending and a tenth of the mortgage market. Under the steady hand of former AIB banker Mark Bourke, its transformation under the special regime in place since 2014 is almost complete.

This involved the workout of about €8bn of legacy assets left over from the BES days. A contingent capital agreement worth €3.9bn with the resolution fund was designed to keep the bank’s CET1 capital above a minimum of 12 per cent following losses. That mechanism officially expires in December 2025 and only has about €500mn of capacity left (that is almost certainly not needed). Until then, however, Novo Banco is unable to pay dividends.

The bank wants regulators to close the mechanism early so it can get the ball rolling on capital returns. A CET1 ratio at 19.9 per cent as of June this year means ample spare cash to fund investor payouts. It would also be the trigger for an IPO, pushed by 75 per cent shareholder Lone Star Funds.

Strong growth in net interest income helped achieve returns on tangible equity of more than 20 per cent last year. That has likely peaked, depending on the path of interest rates. Asset quality is also good, the average mortgage loan-to-value is under 45 per cent.

That could earn a multiple at the higher end of where Spanish banks are trading: 7 times forward earnings would value Novo Banco’s equity at just under €5bn. That would mean a more than four times return for Lone Star on its initial investment — and another score in the comeback for Europe’s banks.

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital
