Sirena 88: Inside the New 27 Metre Flagship Model by Sirena Yachts

Germán Frers has somehow designed the new 27-metre Sirena 88 with five cabins and space to spare. Sam Fortescue looks inside the superyacht to work out how he did it.

I can't help it. I have to pitch right in with my favourite feature of the new Sirena 88 . From the huge bed in the owner's suite, this yacht gives you an underwater view of the mosaic-lined foredeck pool through a glass bulkhead that sends dappled blue light all over the cabin. It’s simply glorious design in its own right, but on a boat of this size, it’s nothing short of genius.

In fact, there’s a lot about this yacht that punches well above its 26.8-metre stature. And that shouldn’t come as a surprise, since the young Turkish builder Sirena Marine has explicitly set out to do just that. “Sirena Yachts delivers superyacht solutions, comfort and quality to smaller size vessels,” says Ipek Kırac, CEO of Sirena Marine. But with the other two yachts in the range measuring up at 18.7 metres and 20.7 metres, the scope to push those imaginative features has been limited – until now. The Sirena 88 at last gives the brand a canvas big enough to paint on, with the promise of bigger projects to come.

To start with, this boat is the brand’s first tri-decker, and offers true cruising potential with a 2,100-nautical-mile range at nine knots. Add the optional extra 5,500-litre fuel tank and that rises to 3,100 nautical miles – enough to cross the Atlantic. Its features and interior finish all feel like a big step up from the smaller yachts, too.

In time-honoured fashion, Sirena has split the accommodation between guest cabins on the lower deck, showpiece entertaining space on the main deck, and an open upper deck social area. This arrangement gives the option of four or even five cabins and makes an impressive full-beam master cabin a reality on the main deck. Five cabins in a 27 metre? Well, this yacht has a deceptive volume to her, courtesy of the naval architecture and exterior design work of long-term collaborator Germán Frers . The renowned Argentinian designer is better known for sailing boats, so perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that he’s managed to squeeze so much useful space out of the hull – an impressive 165 gross tonnes of it, in fact.

“The hull shape developed during the tank-testing programme for the Sirena line of motor yachts is rather unique, being efficient in a wide range of boat speeds,” says Frers. He’s referring to the fact that this planing hull can achieve 25 knots with its two 1,550hp MAN V12s going flat out, yet it is also capable of cruising along at nine knots consuming just 5.3 litres per nautical mile. “The extraordinary interior volume for a yacht of this size is also unusual, but today it’s possible to solve that volume-performance equation,” he adds.

The boat has a low superstructure that seems to hunker down into the high, heavy bulwarks. With a plumb bow, no visible side decks and the weight of the superstructure aft, the yacht has the looks of what Frers calls “a practical, rugged, seagoing vessel”. But those broad bulwarks serve a purpose, carrying frameless black glazing on its bevelled edge that brings light pouring into the yacht’s interior. There are more touches of big-boat flair, too, in the small wings that flank the wheelhouse.

Viewed in profile, the superstructure extends aft as far as the transom, with only a sliver of a bathing platform hanging above the water. This is deceptive, however. Swing the large transom door up and you reveal a continuation of the teak-decked bathing platform extending inside. Its 12 square metres provide plenty of room for some easy chairs and a lounger between the bulwarks of the twin staircases down from the main deck. It serves as a garage for a four-metre tender under way, assisted by the transformer on the stern.

There is plenty of other exterior real estate for guests to choose from. Aft on the main deck, you have a large U-shaped sofa with an imposing teak table that can seat eight with ease. The deck is sheltered by the overhang of the huge flybridge above, but the views are fantastic, with low bulwarks and just slim supports at the corners. The blackened glass of the saloon acts as a giant mirror in certain lights, giving a real sense of distance. Though the interior design by Dutchman Cor D Rover is clean and simple, this area is not without a few smart embellishments, including optional drinks fridges and outdoor grills in the two units stationed on either side of the wide sliding door into the saloon. “A lot of attention has been paid to storage space and inventive solutions have been created for this,” he says.

Undoubtedly, the main draw is the 55-square-metre flybridge, which is completely open air under a lightweight carbon-fibre hardtop. This is the yacht’s real playground – a potential party deck or a spot for some quiet relaxation with a sundowner in hand. Sirena has managed to include a teak-panelled spa pool, a large wet bar, freestanding chairs and a deep L-shaped sofa with another imposing teak table – all without the sense of cramming things in. The hardtop has an opening panel in the centre and there’s a true second helm station forward, replicating all the key navigational functions of the main bridge.

But it’s the raised foredeck, which provides volume for the owner’s suite below, that offers the most private spot on board. The huge sunpads here have the teak-edged dipping pool at their feet, and tucked behind the bow bulwarks is a spot where you could sit with a book, invisible to the rest of the anchorage. “There are very different areas to live on this boat. Many people can be aboard, but you still have your privacy,” says Kıraç.

This homely feel was a key part of the design brief for Rover, who has tried to create a “warm and inviting atmosphere”. He has brought in neutral colours in wood, fabrics and leather to offer three alternative interiors, described as contrast, warm and light – although the yard is at pains to stress that any design wish of the owner can be accommodated. Through them all, he managed to balance a sense of home with a range of high-end materials, luxurious fabrics and soft carpets in natural tones.

“Combined with the stainless-steel detailing, reflective surfaces and off-white hand-stitched leather, the grey oak in the design gives the interior a high-quality, contemporary look without being cold,” says Rover. “Comfort, style and attention to detail are achieved with craftsmanship behind the design elements.”

Much of the interior furniture is made by Sirena or its subcontractors, but there is also a sprinkling of well-known European brands including Minotti, Tribù, Hermès, Loro Piana and Dornbracht. Although it is the first time he has worked with Frers, the two are both trained naval architects and made a good connection. “I put my design on the table and Germán made it possible,” says Rover. “He delivered me the volume that I love.”

That volume has enabled all sorts of pleasing little details. In the master cabin, for instance, the space under the bulwarks gives a full-height window on either side. This provides the perfect niche for a small desk, or the alternative option of a fold-down balcony on one side – a rarity in yachts of this size. A mirror above the basins in the owner’s bathroom can be raised at the touch of a button to close off the view of the pool, and there is access through the forward bulkhead to the private foredeck swimming area.

On the lower deck, the forward VIP cabin has skylights as well as hull windows, making it an exceedingly bright space. Lying deep in the bow with a large bathroom and its own dressing room, it is reached up a few steps, which give it the feel of a loft-style hideaway. Here, as in all the cabins, the finish is reassuringly fine, with horizontal leather panels at the bedhead, gloss white cabinetry and dark oak and stainless-steel detailing. Every window has an opening section for natural ventilation.

The first 88 is a five-cabin version, with two further twins and a second VIP cabin further aft. Spread across the whole beam of the yacht, this cabin is insulated from the engine room by the crew quarters, which include a small sitting area. And though the position of bulkheads is fixed, there are many other configurations possible too. “The yard offers the flexibility to turn any cabin into whatever the client dreams of, from gym to cinema or karaoke room to wellness spa,” says Rover. “Even a hammam.”

Tanıl Sürmeli, product manager for Sirena Yachts, insists that this yacht is an evolution of its smaller sisters. “We wanted to keep our brand promises in all our models with big volumes, high efficiency and speed,” he explains. But to me, the new 88 is a big step up for the three-year-old brand in terms of finish, as well as the technical platform behind it. For instance, Sirena has spent a lot of time on the yacht’s insulation and reckons it could “easily achieve” RINA Comfort Class certification. The separation between the guest spaces and the crew areas on the port side also puts it in a different league.

This yacht represents a shot across the bows of other builders in the 30-metre-plus space. “We see the 88 as a step into the superyacht market,” adds Sürmeli, “so we increased our methodology accordingly.” Combine that with the fact that the yard’s new building can accommodate yachts up to 40 metres, and you have a real statement of intent. “We are thinking about doing a family with bigger models that will start around 40 metres,” says Sürmeli. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

The Sirena 88 boasts presence, volume and a master suite to die for, but is this enough in an arena packed with top-end talent?

Designing a big yacht is easier than a small one. Whether you’re working on a waterline of 20ft or 200ft, people stay the same size. Headroom, beds, room to swing the family cat – it all needs to be incorporated somehow, and the less space you have, the tougher it is.

So although the well-known urge of most boatyards to build ever larger craft is often explained in economic terms, it being easier to make a profit on a big boat than a little one, there is also the holy grail aspect to consider – the conviction that the design of the next model up will have none of the drawbacks of the previous one.

Nonsense, of course, but it does perhaps explain why most 85ft motor yachts look like scaled up versions of their 75ft predecessors, which bear a striking resemblance to the earlier 65ft model, itself eerily similar in profile to the 55… and so on.

It’s true that Sirena Yachts in Turkey does have smaller models in its range, but perhaps its formative experiences in contract-building the Magellano range for Azimut – a concept that couldn’t see a preconception without ripping it up – has given the shipyard the confidence to do things its own way.

The new Sirena 88 does not look like a scaled-up version of anything. In fact it seems to have been originally conceived as something a lot bigger and then scaled down, as if the designer had been set the task of squeezing all the assets of a superyacht into something that you could still happily anchor just off the beach.

The renowned Buenos Aires naval architect German Frers was given the job. He has drawn a few superyachts in his time, and his studio has also created some elegant sailboats for Sirena Yachts’ Euphoria brand.

He set about designing an efficient semi-displacement hull for the new motor yacht, whose rounded underwater sections he then married to bold, slab-like topsides cut through with dramatic, rectangular windows, surmounted by the aggressive wedge shape of the superstructure.

Finally, the whole edifice was topped by the narrow slit of the wheelhouse windscreen, which has the slightly sinister air of a gun emplacement. It is one of the more unusual motor yacht profiles of recent years. It certainly stands out. If you don’t wish to turn heads every time you enter harbour, this is not the boat for you.

Appearances can be deceptive

And if, having studied the outside of the Sirena 88, you thought you might have some idea of what awaits within, you are in for a surprise. The exterior design seems to be all about height – from the pontoon, the yacht has the presence of a Le Corbusier tower block.

But in fact, the true essence of this vessel is its immense beam, which the design exploits to excellent effect, not just in the jaw-dropping first impression created by the deck saloon, with its wide open spaces and huge windows, but in the raised foredeck.

This encloses so much interior space that the Sirena 88’s Gross Tonnage – that spatial yardstick originally used to evaluate the capacity of cargo ships and now commonly applied to superyachts as well – is an astonishing 165GT.

That’s more than twice the internal volume of some of its 88ft rivals, and it even leaves spaceships like the Ferretti 920 far behind. To say this aspect of the Sirena is ‘class leading’ doesn’t begin to do it justice.

So the Sirena 88 looks big from the outside, and feels big on the inside, for one simple reason. It is big – an impression strengthened by the main deck layout, which is modelled on that of a typical superyacht.

After admiring the saloon and strolling past the midships dining table, which is flanked by sliding glass doors leading out onto the sidedecks, you go through a door and find yourself in a lobby on the starboard side. From here a short companionway leads up to the wheelhouse, and a longer one heads down to the lower deck. There is also a day head.

Go through the next door and you arrive in the area created by that raised foredeck, the spectacular full-beam owner’s suite , with full-height windows each side, a vast ensuite bathroom and private access up through a sliding glass door onto the foredeck.

Down below, the plumb topsides carry well forward, and the accommodation volumes are equally impressive. Headroom never dips below 6ft 6in – it is 6ft 8in all through the main deck – and the beds are all full-size. The interior design, by Dutch studio Cor D Rover, emphasises opulence.

There is lots of marble, and there are nicely stitched leather-clad bulkheads and locker fronts, while dark hardwoods contrast alluringly with chrome hardware. The pièce de resistance on the lower deck is the full-beam VIP suite with its large hull windows, spacious head and shower compartments, and space to walk around, in spite of the impressive size of the bed – 6ft 5in by 5ft 10in. On any other 88-footer you’d assume it was the owner’s suite.

Peace-keeping design

One aspect of German Frers’ dramatic exterior shape which doesn’t play quite so well inside the Sirena 88 is the bow. That straight stem and its extraordinarily fine entry, combined with a bare minimum of flare, creates an interior space the shape of a slice of cheese.

To find the necessary width in the forward guest cabin to accommodate the bedhead, Frers has had to go up – and up – to the extent that the sleeping area is separated from its ensuite head and shower compartments not just horizontally but vertically – by three tall, steep steps right by the foot of the bed.

I tried to imagine waking up at three in the morning and groping my way down there in the middle of the night. It didn’t end well. There ought to be a sturdy handrail on each side, at the very least. A rethink of the different sole levels at this end of the lower deck might lead to a more elegant solution.

Down at the other end, a double and a single crew cabin are fitted just aft of amidships, with separate shower and head compartments and a small galley and mess area. Siting the crew quarters between the VIP suite and the engineroom adds useful extra sound insulation for your favourite guests.

According to the shipyard’s engineers on our sea trial, a lot of thought went into reducing the levels of sound and vibration on board, with not only ‘floating’ floors but soft mountings for engines, generators and anything else that might set up an irritating buzz.

With its long flybridge, furnished foredeck and large cockpit, the Sirena 88 is almost as luxurious on the outside as it is below decks. Asymmetric side decks make it easier to get around this substantial piece of floating real estate, with a companionway from the main deck to the bow on the starboard side, and a set of steps on the port side linking the bow to the flybridge .

No fewer than four flybridge layouts are available. In every case a comfortable bar and massive dining table are provided, so you just have to decide if you would prefer fixed sunbeds or loose sunloungers aft, and whether or not you’ll have a hot tub up there. Our test boat didn’t, but it did have the optional ‘dipping pool’ on the foredeck, with teak trim and a glass front.

Our Sirena 88 also had the aft stowage area on the bathing platform fitted out as a basic beach club – a great place to sit with a sundowner, although it would probably take a few cocktails before I could relax sitting under that heavy open hatch.

Such levels of choice are not universally available. When it comes to power plant, the Sirena 88 comes with just the one option, a pair of MAN V12s of 1,550hp apiece, driving conventional shafts and propellers through V-drive transmissions.

The exemplary engineroom is absolutely enormous, and is reached through the watertight door in the crew quarters or via a small deck hatch in the cockpit.

On our evening sea trial off Cannes the declared design speed of 26 knots proved beyond our particular Sirena 88, the first off the line, which maxed out at 22.6 knots. A heavy load of fuel and water probably didn’t help, but it’s also possible that the prop selection could do with a little more fine tuning.

The Sirena 88 is a big and ponderous beast that feels big and ponderous to drive, its marked outward heel in hard turns no doubt exaggerated during our trial by the crowd of 20-plus all electing at once to enjoy the sunset from the flybridge.

Quiet and relaxing at displacement speeds, thanks to its rounded hull form, the Sirena 88 was also able to post a reasonable set of figures in semi-planing mode.

We found a cruising sweet spot at around 1,800rpm, and 15.3 knots – had we been less heavily loaded, that might have translated to around 16 knots. The big Sirena also has a considerable cruising range, especially with the optional 5,500-litre fuel tank.

With its semi-displacement hull design, the Sirena 88 is not intended to compete with its rivals on performance. Even its design speed of 26 knots wouldn’t cut it in comparison with many of today’s powerful, planing flybridge machines. But the Sirena 88’s somewhat stately progress is amply justified by the fact that compared with most motor yachts of similar length, it is like a stately home. Great height and considerable beam, combined with a design that maximises interior space, give the Sirena 88 accommodation volumes that leave most of its rivals for dead. It’s not perfect – that forward cabin could do with a re-think – but it is ground-breaking and genuinely impressive. If you want an 88-footer that makes you feel like a superyacht owner, from the engineroom to the flybridge, via the full-beam VIP and spectacular owner’s cabin, then at the moment the Sirena 88 is pretty much the only game in town.

Reviewed: Sirena 88 RPH

In an old episode of the British car show Top Gear , there was an exchange between presenter Jeremy Clarkson and guest Simon Cowell about the latter’s order of a Mercedes-Maybach. Clarkson was ­dismissive of the car, but Cowell defended his choice, saying the Mercedes-­Maybach is not a car to drive oneself but, instead, a car to be driven in. The onboard ­experience is what matters most; form follows function.

I was reminded of that episode when I saw Sirena’s new flagship, the 88 RPH.

First and ­foremost, she is big. And that big ­epithet—at least where semidisplacement motoryachts of a ­similar ­designation are concerned—is a key ingredient of luxury. ­Argentina-born designer Germán Frers gave her a high bow and a nearly plumb stem that barely impinge upon her 88-foot length overall and 23-foot-2-inch beam. Just a couple of examples of how that design translates into spaciousness on board: The anchor locker in her prow measures 8 feet, and the headroom throughout most of her engine room is 6 feet, 5 inches. The headroom is better still in most of the accommodations.

As for oomph and the onboard experience, the first 88’s ­powertrain consists of twin 1,550 hp MAN V-12s, V-boxes, shafts and five-blade props spinning in half tunnels, facilitating a relatively modest draft of a little more than 6 feet. We were fairly heavy off Cannes, France, with 25 people aboard, 85 percent fuel, and the other tanks at close to 50 percent full or empty, depending on your disposition. (Her full-load ­displacement is 220,000 pounds.) The weather for our spell aboard was summer-evening ­glorious: a gentle breeze, sea-state negligible, which meant little action for her Humphree All Speed electric fins and Interceptor bars.

She managed a top-end speed of 22.9 knots, meaning just over 2,300 rpm on the rev counters and a total fuel burn of 160 gallons per hour. Sirena quotes a 25-knot maximum speed with a lighter load.

At 18 knots and 2,000 rpm, she ­consumes around 120 gallons of fuel per hour, so potentially, she has 430 nautical miles of range. At 10 knots, the V-12s whirred at just under 1,100 rpm and politely sipped their way through 17.5 gph, meaning at least a 1,660-nm range with the standard tanks; range increases 50 percent with optional long-range tanks. Indeed, bumble along at 9 knots, and she has the potential for more than 2,100 or 3,100 nm, depending on the tanks. Frers says the Sirena hull shape, which was thoroughly tank-tested prior to the first model launch, is ­particularly efficient across a wide range of hull speeds.

Her GRP hull is resin-­infused, and her deck and ­superstructure are a carbon-fiber hybrid. Floating doors reduce sound and vibration; ­decibel ­levels in the wheelhouse fluctuated from 52 dB(A) to no more than 65 dB(A), which is the level of normal conversation. Visibility to the horizon was good from the raised pilothouse, although inevitably that high bow will cast quite a shadow.

There is an asymmetry to the deck layout, in that the side decks are configured differently from one side to the other. The portside deck runs forward from the aft deck down to a galley door forward of the salon. The starboard-side deck runs forward to a set of steps that lead to the foredeck.

Heading inside from the aft deck, Cor D. Rover’s Amsterdam-based studio ­created a dark-oak ­interior that balances the bright natural light. The main deck has an open-plan salon and dining area, and owners can choose various arrangements of the furniture. The surrounding glass delivers splendid views; picture windows on each side include full-height sliding doors to the side decks. Farther forward are a galley to port and an ­entryway to ­starboard.

The owners’ full-beam ­master ­stateroom is forward on the main deck with ­full-height glazing along each side. A desk is to port, and there’s a full-beam head with a bath, shower stall and ­separate head ­compartment. The master also has private access to the foredeck, which has a ­rectangular hot tub. Tucked within deep bulwarks, the foredeck really works as a private terrace. There’s even a “secret garden path” to the space from the forward port corner of the flybridge, which has its own hot tub as well as all the usual alfresco essentials beneath a hardtop with an electric sunroof.

Four en suite guest staterooms are on the lower deck. The biggest is pretty much ­amidships, with the stateroom ­occupying two-thirds of the beam and the ­remaining third given over to the head. Two of the other staterooms have twin berths, and the ­stateroom at the bow has a double berth. The double-berth stateroom is virtually split-level; you walk up a few steps to get to the bed with hullside windows on either side, the lowest providing flanking views and the highest serving as skylights above the bed. (If I were guest aboard, this would be my spot.)

Cabins for three or four crew are between the engine room and owner’s stateroom. A beach club is all the way aft, beneath a lift-up transom door. This space doubles as toy stowage. The fixed stern platform and ­overhead crane can handle a tender weighing 1,760 pounds.

The Sirena 88 RPH has range if owners want it, speed when they need it, room for a growing ­family, first-rate fit and finish, and a design that stands apart. Jeremy ­Clarkson might not be impressed, but I was.
