VSY, Hot Lab Unveil 220-Foot Explorer Yacht

  • By Kim Kavin
  • Updated: October 17, 2018

hot lab 67m explorer

VSY and Hot Lab have unveiled the concept for a 220-foot go-anywhere yacht dubbed the 67m Explorer.

The design team took inspiration from working boats and naval ships, since the conversion of those vessels are what started the explorer-yacht craze a number of years ago.

“The Hot Lab 67m Explorer by VSY represents all the most demanding requirements in modern yachts, but is built around a concept that is very faithful to the original explorer yacht concept,” Michele Dragoni, partner in charge of styling at Hot Lab, stated in a press release. “The yacht’s overall appearance features the typical superstructure of working boats positioned well forward, thus leaving large open spaces aft. The classic bow, instead of the widespread vertical plumb bows, as well as the wheelhouse wing stations, suggest a highly marine and faithful design approach to working boats and naval ships.”

There are no external stairs at the transom; instead, guests would step aboard by way of a retractable gangway that leads to a vertically opening door connecting to the beach club. The main deck is flush with a pool and space for freestanding furniture.

Another favorite spot is expected to be at the top of the superstructure, just forward of the mast, where a small sundeck is positioned with panoramic views. Dragoni says this spot is “a tribute to the crow’s nests from the legendary age of sail.”

Inside, two layouts are proposed, with six or seven staterooms. Each has sizable windows on three of the yacht’s four decks, along with an owner’s suite forward on the upper deck with 180-degree views.

Why does the name Hot Lab sound familiar? The design studio has worked with numerous yachtbuilders including Baglietto, Heesen, Icon, Moonen, Nobiskrug and Oceanco.

67m Explorer Conversion // Anna Borla // Matteo Picchio

Together with studio dell’architetto matteo picchio, young yacht designer of year finalist anna borla created a 67m explorer yacht conversion..

The base for the conversion is the PSV 118 supply ship. The design team created an entirely new superstructure and also made some changes to the hull design above the waterline. The result is a modern looking explorer yacht with a generous open deck to welcome a helicopter and tenders.

The yacht accommodates up to 20 guests in six guest cabins and two VIP cabins on the upper deck. The guest area contains a gym, cinema, and a Jacuzzi room. Furthermore, the vessel has a private owner’s deck with a forward-facing bedroom, private salon, office, sky lounge, and terrace.

The bridge deck contains a sky lounge and a dining room with a bar and conversion pit. Moreover, the captain’s area with cabin, watch cabin, and dinette is connected to the wheelhouse. The crew area is amidships on the lower deck has with 14 single cabins. The engine room is forward located.

In 2019, Winch Design and Heesen Yachts launched XVenture, a 57m explorer yacht with dramatic good looks and rugged capability. Following the latest design and technology developments, the concept has been revisited and refreshed with new solutions, updated layouts and refined appeal to create the XV67.

Engineered to travel off the beaten track in total safety and five-star comfort, the XV67 explorer yacht concept remains true to the original design intent: to create an exceptionally capable and beautiful blue water voyager that will inspire owners to venture into new terrain – and turn heads wherever they go.

Hot Lab 67 M Explorer by VSY project revealed

During the last edition of the Monaco Yacht Show 2018 (MYS), held in Montecarlo from 26 to 29 September 2018, the updated version of the Hot Lab 67 M Explorer by VSY project was presented.

The project, developed by the studio (active in Milan since 2004), was presented jointly with the Italian shipyard VSY, specially chosen because of the yard’s high quality achievements in the range of over 60 metre yachts and for its commitment to sustainability in both the construction process and its innovative business model.

The Hot Lab 67 M Explorer by VSY was conceived in accordance with the original Explorer yacht concept, yet features all the characteristics of a modern and absolutely contemporary yacht. It is a project that combines the sober elegance with typical Italian taste and savoir-faire, with the aim of making this yacht a point of reference in the category.

The genesis of the Hot Lab 67 M Explorer by VSY

Explorer-type yachts have experienced a remarkable diffusion in the recent years, to the point that they have also greatly inspired yachts that cannot be considered part of this category. Everything started with the conversion of working boats into pleasure craft; the shipyards then began to propose explorers designed from scratch, conceived for leisure and private use but faithful to the concept, both in terms of general look and stylistic development.

“The Hot Lab 67 M Explorer by VSY” – says Michele Dragoni, the partner of Hot Lab in charge of styling – “presents all the most demanding requirements in modern yachts, but is built around a concept that is very faithful to the original explorer yacht concept”. The yacht’s overall appearance features the typical superstructure of working boats (whether oceanographic, cable layers or fishing boats) positioned well foward, thus leaving large open spaces aft. The classic bow, instead of the widespread vertical plumb bows, as well as the wheelhouse wing stations, suggest a highly marine and faithful design approach to working boats and naval ships.

The external layout, elaborate and coherent, is more modern. The transom does not foresee external stairs, as access aboard is by retractable gangway, while the vertically opening door connects the large beach club with the swimming platform. Two large doors serve as platforms and at the same time allow hauling the tender and toys. The aft part of the main deck is completely flush and when cleared of freestanding furniture is suitable big pool use and the access to the beach club area from the main deck is provided by a large hatch.

According to Michele Dragoni, “The play on alternating full and empty spaces as one climbs from one deck to another in the beautiful superstructure is most probably the most characteristic stylistic feature of the exteriors on the Hot Lab 67 M Explorer by VSY”. The wing stations are deliberately voluminous and functional, as they facilitate mooring manoeuvres, but at the same time are a tribute to the working boats that the Explorer yachts category draw inspiration from. The infinity pool behind the wheelhouse, far from indiscreet eyes, creates an intimate and scenic panoramic point. At the top of the superstructure, just in front of the instrument mast, there is a small panoramic sundeck: a tribute to the crow’s nests from the legendary age of sail.

The interiors of the Hot Lab 67 M Explorer by VSY are fairly classic and – declares Antonio Romano, partner of Hot Lab and marketing manager of the Milanese studio – “are the result of painstaking studies aimed at optimally balancing outdoor and indoor spaces with the volumes of the yacht”. Two layouts are on the drawing table, with either six or seven cabins all told. “The common denominator” – added Romano – “is represented by the presence of large windows on three of the four decks, which literally flood the interior with natural light. Other characteristic features are the owner’s suite, located at the forward end of the upper deck with a breath-taking 180-degree view over the sea, private studio, a big bathroom and two dedicated walk-in closets for him and for her, a sky lounge with glazed windows on three sides and an oversized beach club that, whilst the tender and the toys are at sea, becomes an area fully devoted to relaxing and wellness”.

About Hot Lab

Active in Milan since 2004, the studio was created by three young partners: Michele Dragoni, Enrico Lumini and Antonio Romano. Coming from, respectively, automotive design, architecture and design, this dynamic partnership promptly put itself to the test, developing projects that stand out for their painstaking formal research and sober and elegant styling and benefit the well known naval shipyards and refined owners who are accompanied and advised throughout the entire design and construction process of their yacht.

In little more than a decade, the design studio has emerged at the front of a very complex and competitive sector, giving life to the shared objective of the partnership: to work for clients who are proud to own a Hot Lab designed product. Their lead came about not only from hard work, but also in virtue of the dual soul symbolized in the two words that compose the studio’s name: passionate about everything that pertains to client relations and the more romantic aspect of a job that always begins with a pencil and a blank sheet of paper; experimental and technological about the use of advanced software for everything down to the smallest detail.

The studio has received several international awards, including several ShowBoats Design and World Superyacht awards, in addition to the Finest Interior and MYD awards, and can boast of consolidated relationships with both Italian and foreign shipyards that work from the studio’s interior and exterior designs on both custom and series produced yachts. Prominent among these brands are Arcadia, Baglietto, Bilgin, Columbus, Fincantieri, Heesen, Icon, Mondomarine, Moonen, Nobiskurg, Oceanco, RMK Marine, Sarp, Turquoise and VSY.

HOT LAB 67M Explorer by VSY

The Hot Lab 67 M Explorer by VSY is designed around a concept that is very faithful to the original explorer yacht concept but providing whatever a contemporary yacht is nowadays expected to offer.

It is a modern project with that special Italian flair and sober elegance that aims to become a reference point in its category and represents the way VSY are opening up to new yacht concepts capable of incorporating a green mindset and an exclusive design, to flank their family yacht line.

The yacht’s overall appearance features the typical superstructure of working boats (whether oceanographic, cable layers or fishing boats) positioned well forward, thus leaving large open spaces aft. The classic bow, instead of the widespread vertical plumb bows, as well as the wheelhouse wing stations, suggest a highly marine and faithful design approach to working boats and naval ships.

The transom does not foresee external stairs, as access aboard is by retractable gangway, while the vertically opening door connects the large beach club with the swimming platform. Two large doors serve as platforms and at the same time allow hauling the tender and toys. The main deck features a large pool and the aft part is completely flush and suitable for helicopter use when cleared of freestanding furniture. To facilitate take-off and landing operations, winches and other deck hardware are concealed beneath the main deck, whereas access to the beach club area from the main deck is provided by a large hatch.

According to the Italian studio Hot Lab, who developed the whole project, the play on alternating full and empty spaces – as one climbs from one deck to another in the beautiful superstructure – is probably the most characteristic stylistic feature of the exteriors on this yacht.

The wing stations are deliberately voluminous and functional, as they facilitate mooring manoeuvres, but at the same time are a tribute to the working boats that the Explorer yachts category draw inspiration from. The sinking of mike lynch’s ‘unsinkable’ sailing vessel was not only a heartbreaking tragedy, but also gave us a rare glimpse into the superyachting fraternity. here, boat international’s lucy dunn looks at a group that is both secretive and innovative, and asks how such a high-spec sailing yacht could have sunk at all..., article bookmarked.

Size, in the superyacht world, is everything

L ast week’s sinking of the 56-metre yacht Bayesian and the tragic deaths of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his guests and boat staff have given the public a glimpse into the rarefied world of superyachts.

From the sheer size of the mast (74 metres, roughly the size of seven two-storey houses stacked on top of each other) to the expense ( Bayesian was put up for sale in 2014 with an asking price of $30m, which is around £23m), to the sheer luxury (the interiors were by Remi Tessier, the designer behind Claridge’s new penthouse), it’s a world few people normally get to see.

There are currently 12,626 superyachts on the water around the world with 1,166 superyachts in build or on order. If you have been to a Greek island this year, or maybe the Amalfi coast, you may have glimpsed them coming in and out of harbours and wondered who owns a yacht like that. Or who can afford to charter a yacht like that – which have an average price of around £180,000 a week.

While you may think of glossy influencers and A-listers, the superyachting fraternity is where millionaires are sorted from the billionaires from the centi-billionaires; the 0.001 per centers. Rarely will you find a celebrity with the financial clout to afford a yacht owned by Lynch, these are generally under-the-radar industry titans who don’t have household names.

I knew Mike Lynch and his next idea was to get us to believe the unbelievable

So, what exactly makes a superyacht super? According to Boat International , where I work, it can be applied to any boat, motor or sailing yacht which is over 24 metres in length. Size, in the superyacht world, is everything – and yachts are getting bigger all the time. Indeed, our data arm BoatPro shows that the average length of a new-build yacht is now 39.2 metres, up from 38.5 metres last year.

Currently, the largest yacht in the world is the motor yacht Azzam – at 180.6 metres, almost two football fields in length and triple the size of Lynch’s Bayesian . For owners, yachts can be bought “semi-custom” (a bit like a new-build house off-plan but on a much grander scale), or “fully-custom” – meaning they’re built from scratch to the owner’s exact specifications.

One of the last pictures taken of luxury superyacht ‘Bayesian’

And it is not a quick process either: it can take up to four years from design stage to completion, with 300 people or more working on each project. All of which might go some way to explaining the mind-boggling price of them.

While this changes according to market fluctuations and demand, a fully custom 100-metre with all the bells and whistles is around £200m. And that’s just for starters. Depending on the size and age of the yacht you’ll need to spend at least 5-10 per cent of the purchase price every year on the cost of maintaining and operating it (so, in this case, £20m on crew, fuel, tax, insurance, harbour fees).

Some owners like to recoup some of their running costs by turning their yacht into a mini hotel business and chartering it out. A commercially successful boat (neutral interiors, jacuzzi, lots of executive toys) will pick up several charters a year, covering the traditional charter beats of the Med in summer and the Caribbean in winter.

The 85-metre yacht Bold , for example, is equipped with an outdoor cinema, helipad, teppanyaki grill, inflatables, water skis – a snip at £665,000 a week.

While many prefer to keep a low profile, other yacht owners like fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger aren't so shy, and love to use their yacht to entertain (in Hilfiger's case, Kris Jenner of Kardashian fame). But more often than not, owners are super-private. (Lynch was one of these owners who liked to keep things low-key.) Often even the building of the yacht can be wrapped in a cloak of secrecy, and the engineers and craftspeople working on them won’t know who the owner is.

The ‘Azzam’, currently the biggest motorised yacht in the world

Unlike a car, yachts don’t depreciate in value quite as sharply. The caveat to this is that you need to keep it in pristine condition. This takes work: one thing that is true on Netflix hit Below Deck – crew really do clean cracks between floor tiles with toothpicks.

Keep on top of maintenance and your yacht will last 70 years or more. Christina O , the iconic superyacht once owned by shipping giant Aristotle Onassis and wife Jackie O, is still going strong at 81 years old. She was recently listed for sale for €90m (£68m).

You will need at least a crew of 20 for your 100-metre yacht. Not made-for-TV crews, but ones with professional qualifications, who you would trust to handle your multimillion-pound bit of kit.

Good captains are very sought after and can name their price. Sailing guests to exotic parts of the world is just a tiny part of the job: you have to plan safe routes, book berths in marinas (you’re looking north of €117,000 – around £99,000 – for the Monaco Grand Prix week), manage crew, handle copious paperwork and organise repairs and yard visits.

It’s not just a case of popping it into a local garage for a service – which explains why guests must take off their shoes before stepping on board to protect the precious teak decking.

And unlike other status symbols like supercars or precious watch collections, you can’t just moor a superyacht and forget about it until your next fancy holiday. They need constant attention – as the US government found to their cost when they seized Amadea , a 106-metre superyacht owned by a Russian oligarch and discovered they needed to pay out $7m (£5m) a year in maintenance.

The then newly restored ‘Christina O’ at sea, pictured in 2001

This is why superyachts become such passion projects, beyond whether they are worth it or not. Owners don’t just own them, they put their hearts and souls into them. And this is where the fun happens.

Because despite the tacky “gold taps and bling” reputation that blights the industry, many owners are, on the contrary, super-creative with their superyachts: cue underwater “Nemo” lounges, indoor gardens, waterfalls, snow rooms, padel courts, IMAX cinemas… imaginations have no limits.

Innovation is at the heart of the industry and is very bespoke according to need. Some owners prefer the cut and thrust of sail over motor and a closer experience of the sea.

Some want a vessel that can circumnavigate the globe so they can really see the world. Bayesian , for example, was built to go places and her sistership Rosehearty (an almost identical yacht built by the same yard) has been taken around the globe multiple times in all weathers without a hitch.

Some owners get their yachts built with sturdy “ice class” hulls so they can visit the Poles. These are called “explorer yachts” and they have laboratories for visiting scientists, personal submersibles, James Bondesque “moon pools”, openings in the hull for subs to dock, and so on.

‘Bayesian’ was built by the highly respected Perini Navi

Sometimes an explorer yacht is not big enough to handle everything an adventurous owner wants to do – which is where support vessels (secondary yachts used to store kit such as seaplanes and snowmobiles) come in.

Why have one yacht when you can have two?

Some forward-thinking owners put their cash behind investigating greener alternatives to traditional diesel engines. The world’s first hydrogen-powered superyacht, Project 821 , which is 119-metres long, reportedly hit the water this June. Project Zero , a “zero fossil fuel” sailing yacht with the ability to harvest wind, thermal and solar energy launches in 2025.

There has been a lot of speculation about what caused the tragedy with Bayesian . Superyachts have been known to have accidents, but rather than sink in storms, they run aground or catch fire (lithium batteries have been cited as a culprit in some cases). Often, due to the length of time passed and complex technical reports released by investigators, we never find out the cause.

It’s now over to investigators to discover how an “unsinkable” yacht sank last week. The facts are: Bayesian was built by Perini Navi, a respected shipyard specialising in sailing yachts based in Italy, which is the world epicentre of shipbuilding. Day in and day out an army of 30,000 engineers, architects and designers that work in these yards pride themselves on unparalleled craftsmanship, using sophisticated naval architecture technology to push boundaries and produce incredible feats of engineering.

The world of superyachts may be a world you and I will never be part of, but as this week’s tragic news has shown, there is so much more to it than you think…

motor yacht explorer 67m

67m Benetti yacht Calex to make world debut at Palm Beach International Boat Show 2023

Following her launch in February 2022, the highly private 67 metre Benetti motor yacht Calex will make her first public appearance at the 2023 Palm Beach International Boat Show later this month (March 23-26).

The yacht, which was formerly known as Project Fenestra, was delivered to an experienced American owner in spring 2022 with the buyer introduced by Northrop & Johnson in June 2019.

Designed by Giorgio M Casseta and his studio, Calex has been built in steel and aluminium with a seven-cabin layout that can accommodate 14 guests. Ten cabins can accommodate 17 crewmembers, including three doubles for the captain, first officer and chief engineer. The owners specifically requested that the crew quarters include materials and furnishings of a similar quality to those used in the guest accommodation.

Calex has six decks, with special attention paid to the owner’s deck, which occupies 160 square metres and includes a lounge with bar and a 180-degree view that still offers complete privacy. The sundeck features a forward steering station, gym and Jacuzzi.

The interiors of the superyacht are by Benetti's in-house team and she is the first custom Benetti of this size to fully comply with TIER III regulations thanks to a scrubbing system for the exhaust gases from both the propulsion and generating systems.

Benetti has a number of exciting projects in the works currently, including the final stages of construction of FB283 .
