Marietas Islands Boat Tours

Designated a world heritage site in 2004, the Islas Marietas National Park tour is undoubtedly one of the  best things to do in Puerto Vallarta . These islands are also known as the “Mexican Galapagos”.

If you have the opportunity to go on a Puerto Vallarta boat tour to the Marietas Islands, you’ll have the opportunity to experience one of the most beautiful natural conservation parks in the world. Its beautiful hidden beach, Playa del Amor, is  incredibly unique , and the surrounding area is magnificent.

Other than Playa del Amor, there are tons of other hidden beaches, ocean caves, rock formations, and tunnels. The Marietas Islands got their shape and impressive geography due to  volcanic activity  many centuries ago. To add to that, it was a  bomb test site  for the Mexican military back in the 1900s. The large explosions caused many of the caves and rock formations to be created. In the 1960s, the government decided to declare the islands a national park.

Puerto Vallarta whale watching season is from Mid-November to March each year . These gentle giants can be seen breaching out of the water as parents instruct their baby calves in the ways of the watery world. • If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.

Marietas Islands, one of the most important wildlife sanctuaries in Mexico’s Pacific coast formed long ago by volcanic activity, the archipelago are two formations of uninhabited islands– long island and round island… Dominated by large caves and cliffs, that protects coral reef, multicolored tropical fishes.

These Islands are the home of a vast colony of sea birds, such as the true pirate of the sky, the magnificent frigate bird, egrets, herons, sea gulls, pelicans, brown boobies and the world famous galapagos Blue-footed Booby. Different species of corals inhabit these areas and of course, many different species of fish enjoy the safety and productivity of the surrounding waters. You might spot King Angelfish, Panamic Sergeant Majors, Cortez Chubs, Giant Damselfish, Moorish Idol, Rainbow Wrasse, and many more.

In the round island is located the HIDDEN BEACH (Monday and tuesday is closed, access under strict control and restrictions; respecting the maximum number of persons allowed per day. Set by CONANP) , to reach this secluded paradise, the swimmers need to go through a short tunnel and swim from the boat a distance of 200 meters.

One extra special way to spend the day is a cruise to the Marietas Islands , just offshore of the Punta de Mita peninsula. These uninhabited islands are a great place for bird-watching, diving, snorkeling, or just exploring. Blue-footed booby birds (found only here, and in the Galapagos) can be spotted all along the islands’ rocky coast, and giant mantas, sea turtles, and colorful tropical fish swim among the coral cliffs.

The islands are honeycombed with caves and hidden beaches––including the stunning Playa de Amor (Beach of Love) that only appears at low tide. You enter a shallow passageway to access this semicircular stretch of sand. There’s also a cave 12m (40 ft.) below the surface with an air pocket where divers can remove of their regulators and have an underwater conversation! Humpback whales congregate around these islands during the winter months, and so pangas can be rented for a do-it-yourself whale-watching excursion.

Ricky and the crew were professional, friendly, and attentive, ensuring everyone had a great time. Paco and the rest of Candy’s team made our day on the bay delightful! The boat was roomy and comfy and we really appreciated the extra shade coverage. Paco was knowledgeable about the area and listened to what we wanted to get out of the day before we took off. They took us snorkeling and to a secret cove where we enjoyed floating and exploring. And, the cherry on top was locating a dolphin! The crew was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. We had a fun and safe experience all around!

Chica Lorca Tours exceeded our expectations in every way. Despite a mix-up regarding the marina where we were supposed to meet, the owner, Gill, promptly resolved the issue with exceptional care and professionalism. The entire team was incredibly accommodating. The crew on the boat was outstanding, and even the staff at the office near the marina went above and beyond to ensure our safety and comfort, including helping us get to our transportation. I highly recommend Chica Lorca Tours for an unforgettable experience.

Wow wow wow!!!! That’s all I have to say. The boat is a little older but absolutely incredible. Amazing service all throughout! We had an amazing time and definitely recommend! BOOK! BOOK! BOOK!!!

The boat condition was good and staff was friendly and accommodating. However there was very poor communication in regard to the portion of trip to las ánimas. When we arrived the pier was under construction, and a separate small boat was required for transportation to shore. It was not disclosed that there would be a fee to transfer nor how much. We also were then told we had to go to a certain restaurant which was not our choice where the staff was rude. When we arrived back on the boat we were only then told that the 2 minute ride to shore and back would cost $500 pesos, which is incredibly overpriced and something we had also not budgeted for. If we had known there was a fee we all would have been fine swimming to shore. We assumed since not discussed prior this would be part of the $1300 we paid for the boat trip since the dock is clearly known to be down and we had set up the plan to go to ánimas ahead of time. This was very upsetting and felt like people were trying to rip us off for money last minute. I would recommend looking into this further for future guests so they do not experience this.

There is nothing like spending a day on the water in Puerto Vallarta. The sun shimmers off the glass-like water as the humpbacks leap and curious dolphins come to see who's there. A great way to enjoy the many attractions of the bay without the crowds or a set itinerary is to charter (rent) your own boat.

Sound expensive? Not with us! We offer you 4, 6, 8, or 10 hour private charters that can take you to the popular snorkeling destination, Los Arcos, the popular beaches of Las Animas or Yelapa where you can lounge on the beach, parasail, ride a banana boat, go on a horseback ride, or whatever else you want to do (beach activities are available at extra cost).

You can also just bob around the bay and do some snorkeling, drinking, whale watching, or just hanging out!  We'll even provide the snorkeling equipment!

All You Need is Playa del Amor

The highlight of any visit to the Islas Marietas is Playa Escondida (Hidden Beach), popularly known as Playa del Amor . This secluded beach is one of the most unique in the world, hidden inside a crater and accessible only through a water tunnel.

Due to its ecological sensitivity, access to Playa del Amor is limited to just over 100 people per day. It is therefore essential to book a guided tour with an authorized tour operator .

Wildlife in the Marietas Islands

The Marietas Islands are a protected marine sanctuary with a rich diversity of marine life. Snorkelers and divers will find colorful fish, sea turtles and coral reefs to explore.

On the surface, birdwatchers will find a variety of breeding colonies of more than 90 species of birds. Among them is the famous Blue-footed Booby. The world's largest breeding colony of brown boobies is also found on the Marietas Islands.

The number of visitors to Playa del Amor is limited to a few hundred people per day and all tour operators are required to respect the ecological practices of the area.

How to Get to the Marietas Islands

The Marietas Islands are located approximately 20 miles (32 km) to the northwest of Puerto Vallarta . Getting to the islands usually involves a boat tour, and there are a number of options to choose from:

• Boat Tours . The most popular way to visit the Marietas Islands is by organized boat tours departing from Marina Vallarta and the Puerto Vallarta Marine Terminal. Snorkeling, kayaking and visits to Hidden Beach are often included on these tours.
• Private Charters . You can charter a private boat to take you to the islands if you prefer a more personalized experience. This allows for more flexibility in how you plan to travel and explore.

What’s the Best Season to Visit the Marietas Islands

The Marietas Islands can be visited throughout the year, but the best time to go is during the dry season from November to May . During this time, the seas are calm and the visibility is excellent for snorkeling and scuba diving. Plan to visit between December and March when humpback whales migrate to the area if you're interested in whale watching in Puerto Vallarta.
