Johnson Street Yacht Club, Raleigh – A Chill Spot for a Drink and a Slide

Johnson Street Yacht Club in Raleigh

As somebody who used to live near Glenwood South for over a decade, I’ve known it’s always been a club, bar, and lounge mecca in the area. But as a local, I always enjoyed the quieter bars in the area. From the Flash House to Napper Tandys, these spots used to be a block or two off the beaten path and had a more local crowd. The newest bar in this neighborhood bar category is the Johnson Street Yacht Club (JSYC)! But don’t let the name fool you, you won’t need a blue blazer for this spot. Here’s what to expect if you visit the JSYC.

Interior of Johnson Street Yacht Club in Raleigh

Located on Johnson Street (duh) in the old building previously known as “The Office”, the JSYC presents a mysterious facade! A cool, brick privacy wall wraps the front patio and looking above, you’ll find a 2nd floor patio and is that what I think it is?! A bright blue slide dropping into 1st floor patio! Inside the JSYC is all dive bar. Unfinished concrete floor, weathered wood bar and trim, pool table, and juke box. Yeah, I think you’ll feel pretty comfortable here! A selection of bottled beers, basic liquors, and affordable drink prices means you’ve got a place to hang out in with little pretension.

Back area of Johnson Street Yacht Club in Raleigh

My first couple of visits to the JSYC were pre-pandemic and then I’ve made a couple of visits post-pandemic and it’s a very mixed crowd here in a good way. A mix of older locals, business people, young 20-somethings (the slide) along with service people usually are hanging out here. And I’m sure over the weekend it attracts a spill-over crowd from Glenwood South. JSYC is woman-owned and woman-friendly so my guess is they will keep any asshole-ish behavior to a minimum!

Patio and slide at Johnson Street Yacht Club in Raleigh

But in general, you’ll find a good mix of locals at JSYC along with their attentive bartenders. Upstairs is where things get a bit more interesting! There’s a large bar along with TV and music along with some patio deck chairs and covered umbrellas. And what about the big blue slide you spied from the outside? The entrance to the slide is up here and you will be whisked down to the first-floor patio in a jiffy. The slide is fast, keep your elbows tucked in (or you’ll skin them) and make sure your knees are ready to cushion the landing! And at night, you’ll find that second-floor patio to be a bit of a magical spot with the warmer weather.

While Johnson Street Yacht Club is not for everyone, it works pretty well for me. I enjoy my fancy-shmancy bars but if I lived in this hood again, I would definitely stop by from time to time to meet a friend and chat. During this pandemic, social connections have been cut short but I imagine that the JSYC would be a good spot to re-establish people connections since it’s managed to survive all that craziness!

JSYC was fantastic! The service was top-notch, the staff friendly, and the drinks excellent. Plus, there's a pool table and other props to keep you entertained.

Photo of Stephanie J.

JSYC was a fun time. The outdoor area was the only part open when we visited so I'll be interested to return and check out the inside once it reopens. My husband and I both had a Blue Moon. It was not clear on what their liquor options were since there wasn't a menu so I'm assuming it's your standard, easy to make drinks. This spot definitely gave us lake/beach vibes. Before you leave or during your visit, you can take a ride down the slide. Enjoy.

Located in the old Office Tavern space, the new Johnson Street Yacht Club has elevated the bar experience from its predecessor but not too much. With a new patio up front hidden from the street by a privacy wall, Johnson Street Yacht Club is really a clean, dive bar complete with pool table, juke box and pinball machine. The crowd is pretty hipster and chill, the drinks and beers (cans only) are simple but hit the spot. And yes, the Yacht Rock! I didn't know what that was but prepared to be soothed by soft, 70's and 80's pop rock. You'll either love Johnson Street Yacht Club or not love it. But it works for me as a local, we needed something like JSYC since the Flash House closed down...

Definitely would not recommend this place. Was very excited after reading the history of this bar to go here and visit. They did not have a very common alcohol that we drink. We're not interested in providing a different kind of alcohol. We're not interested in any other music other than "female songwriters". Bartender was very very rude and unfriendly she was horrible. The vibe was very much either our way or no way not good for customers who are willing to spend a lot of money. Have watched this bar over the past month and can tell why it's always empty horrible horrible customer service

Photo of Gabrielle O.

Doesn't look like anyone's reviewed since COVID! Came for the slide. Did not disappoint (SUPER steep/fast descent, pro tip, don't put your feet down to try and stop your momentum at the bottom; you will automatically stop without flying out bc ~gravity~). Love this bar. They've updated their bar to a giant two-level outdoor patio. Very chill with hammock chairs, adirondacks, picnic tables, roofed outdoor downstairs. Fully outdoors, including the bar (excluding the bathrooms). The indoor area (pool table and some other stuff from the indoor pics on this Yelp page) is closed during COVID, but seriously the two-level patio is more than enough to have a good time. A group of friends and I met safely for the first time in years (could have rain or shine, here) since COVID last night. It was the perfect vibe! We weren't sure if they'd closed or what the space was like before going down since there weren't any updated pics of the patio space (you're welcome ) and their phone line is literally an endless Hall and Oats call tree, but it was a great gamble that could not have worked out better!

Would not recommend this place to anyone. Both older female and short bald wanna be buff but fat guy bartender last night were rude/aggressive as can be. I ordered a Long Island. Watched the female bartender make it. Probably less than ounce of liquor in the whole drink when it's supposed to be 2.5 ounces. When I tried it. It was terrible so I had all my friends try it and they all said tasted like just sour mix. So I asked the bartender to add a little more liquor in there, she did... with attitude(without telling me there would be a charge). I understand LIT is a complicated to make so I took at as ok maybe not many people order this... here's where the reason for the 1 star .... Got my receipt and I was charged for two drinks. I asked why the response I got was "well you asked me to add more liquor" so I replied yes because it was not made properly. I was talking very calm and trying to be respectful and essentially got her to admit that she doesn't know how much liquor goes into an LIT. Once that happened she got real rude and this well this is how this drink is made here.. other wanna be bartender bald short guy got very aggressive telling me to get the fuck out of here. And all I was looking to get out of this is not charged for a second drink I never ordered. What a great experience to start the year with. Back to original point go to any other bar but this one people rude employees who can't make simple drinks.

Photo of Sarah R.

If you like piña coladas... no, but really, if you do, you gotta ask Sandra to make you her special "tropical drink." It's like a piña colada but she uses coconut milk which gives it a creamy and mild quality and adds electrolytes without it being sickeningly sweet. My friends and I each got one and loved it. We also kept getting asked about it by people around us who ended up ordering it, too!

Photo of M W.

I LOVE this bar. I, as a female, feel safe alone and love the bartenders. Also, they have a slide!!!!

Photo of Nick A.

I have been to this bar a few times before my experience yesterday and always had a good time but yesterday was probably the worst bar experience of my entire life. We were just hanging out having a good time and this one bartender was abrasive from the start. We were playing on the slide did not know it was closed and after apologizing for not knowing it was closed she continued to berate us about it. She was so mad we were giving her money. We also wanted to watch golf but she initially said "no" to golf because the news was coming on and who wants to watch the news at a bar, you go to bar to escape the news. Also the music selection on the touch tunes is very limited. Used to be a fun bar to hang out at but now I guess not anymore.

Photo of John D.

Gritty atmosphere but the music here is whack. I paid $5 for the juke box and apparently they only play female singer song writers. All about the females but they take your money for music and don't even tell you you can't play ANY male musicians. If you're a guy and enjoy being castrated musically, this is your bar.

Johnson Street Yacht Club Might Be Raleigh’s Last New Dive Bar

JOHNSON STREET YACHT CLUB

Sure, Slim’s isn’t going anywhere , but not everyone wants to have their eardrums ruptured on a Tuesday night. Elsewhere, true dives—dimly lit haunts with an unmistakable grime, the waft of stale tobacco from the patio’s cigarette graveyard, and more than one $3 beer—are hard to find in a downtown populated by an ever-increasing supply of high-end wine and cocktail bars.

Johnson Street Yacht Club, the latest venture from Bittersweet’s Kim Hammer , may be the city’s last true new dive. That’s because you can’t just build a new dive bar. A dive bar cannot be fabricated; it must be born out of filth and desperation, baptized in PBR and sweat, branded in moon-shaped burns on duct-taped bar stools. It can’t be realized with a vintage Doors poster and distressed oak bar. You can’t hock artisan pretzels and call yourself a dive.

Johnson Street is, in some ways, a resurrection of The Office, the beloved neighborhood bar that occupied these black-painted walls until 2017. But it’s also its own species. Instead of an Addams Family pinball machine, there’s 007. The jukebox contains only female musicians. The décor consists of haphazardly strung Christmas lights and disposable-camera photos stuck to the ceiling alongside baseball cards.

yacht club raleigh

While there are irony-drenched “yacht clubs” lots of places, from Asheville to San Francisco to Greensboro, this isn’t a chain, though the basics are the same: Beer comes in a can, and the priciest drink (a $13 Johnny Walker Black) comes in a plastic cup.

On a Sunday night, when I nestle into the corner of the bar and order a shot of whiskey with a Tecate chaser, the bar is mostly full of industry folks—waitresses and bartenders fresh off shifts elsewhere.

The guy next to me orders a shot, too. He introduces himself as Mitch. A good dive-bar name.

The yachtless club is a legacy of the great Raleigh dives of yore, Mitch says. Deep South closed in 2018, DIVEbar Raleigh some years before that. Just two blocks away, Cornerstone Tavern—a strip of oversized dance bungalows that lures a line of frat boys to its gates on weekends—is bribing patrons with free barbecue and Rice Krispies treats. Nearby in Glenwood South, a five-hundred-square-foot studio rents for $1,200 a month.

“A dive bar is the great equalizer,” Andrew Baker, a Cancer with a rhinestone on his forehead, tells me over Fernet and Montenegro shots.

Before he can explain, a pool stick slaps the floor as Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” blares through the speakers. A group gathers on the nondescript dance floor, and a guy in a patchwork sweater falls on his ass.

Some people are eating cake on paper plates. It’s someone (allegedly) named Andrew Robb Rager’s birthday. (I’m too drunk to question if that’s really his name). The entire bar migrates to the smoking patio, and a woman dressed as if Mad Max ’s Furiosa were a mermaid is standing on the roof holding a paper lantern and a lighter. The delicate bubble of light gracefully floats up into the foggy black sky. Another bursts into flames before leaving the ground.

A true dive bar is where moments like this happen, and where they’re unscripted. Where the single-stall bathroom rarely has a line, and where you don’t need tattoos to feel welcome. Where all of the photos you take will be blurry, and where it’s always cool to buy a stranger a shot.

A nice outdoor 2nd floor hangout built on top of a divey first floor. Interesting combo. Quieter than most of Glenwood due to ... its location. The 2nd floor might be nice for day drinking, but I probably wouldn't head that way for a Friday or Saturdaynight. Read more

Had a great time at this bar for a quick drink last night, but in the morning, I realized I may have forgotten my credit card.. ... However, none of the phone numbers listed on google/their website work, and when I stopped by at 1:30pm Sunday (website saysthey open at 12pm), I was told very rudely that there was a private party, and I must return at 4pm for them to help me withanything. I then asked if someone could just LOOK behind the bar to let me know if there were any cards left last night, and Iwas again told very rudely, ?NO. Come back at 4pm.? If this is a policy to hold people?s credit cards hostage, there is nothingelse to say other than that is an ATROCIOUS policy; if it was just the middle aged lady with short red hair who I talked to, sheshould not be working in a costumer service-based industry. There’s something comforting about a no-frills dive bar. Perhaps because there are no expectations; simply come as you are. The often unmarked, nondescript watering holes serve as a place to get away from it all while enjoying a cold one — or to enjoy the familiar face of the person behind the bar. Food? Don’t count on it, but there are a few spots in the Triangle that dial up the game with damn good hot dogs. There’s also a solid music scene intertwined and a dive bar with a slide (with a no drinking while sliding rule).

In search of your neighborhood dive bar? Check out these 10 vetted options throughout the Triangle so you can find your own version of Cheers .

Accordion Club

Nestled in a strip of local spots on Geer St., including LouElla (a wine bar) and Welcome Tattoo (obviously a tattoo shop), Accordion Club exists. It’s dark and cozy inside, but there’s also a sizeable patio out back with string lights and picnic tables for those who don’t want to get lost inside. The beer menu features a solid list of local and domestic beers, and locals will be the first to say they go out of the way for Sunday morning Hatch burritos. The Frito pie and hot dogs make for excellent drunk snacks to sop up all the liquids.

Kotuku Surf Club

A popular divey bar with a badass outdoor scene, where PBRs, cornhole, a pool table, and bocce ball are part of the equation. The bar itself is dimly lit and gives off all the vibes of an expected dive. Dogs are also welcome, making it a sought-after watering hole for Durham locals and their furry friends. During the pandemic, the spot upped the minimum age for patrons from 21 to 23 to tone down weekend crowds filled with often-rowdy college students.

Rubies on Five Points

In December 2020, Criterion shuttered and locals mourned the loss of one of Durham’s best bars. Enter end of 2021 and Rubies enters the scene, taking over the second story of the building. Get into the bar by way of a discreetly marked entrance with crown signage, up a dimly lit red staircase, and into complete escapism. The team behind Luna Rotiserrie is responsible for bringing this divey-meets-music venue and bar to life. Find industry workers shooting Jager shots post-dinner shifts and catching up with locals at the bar or at intimate booths with dimly lit lamps. Live music and DJs are a big part of the equation and the team will open Remedy Room , a classic cocktail bar, in the downstairs space in 2022.

The dog-friendly establishment attracts the collegiate crowds downing libations out of the legendary 33-ounce Blue Cup on the outdoor patio space. Beer specials are abundant and happen on the regular, as does live music on weekends. The blue cups are so popular that you can buy them in quantities of 25 and 50.

Cozy, hipsterish, and full of personality, Bowbarr is a true escape where locals go to get away from it all — seven nights a week. The whimsical joint is dripped with local art and features a striped, stenciled ceiling and a concrete bar with wood. Music is by way of a record player, and the cocktails are just right (and elevated compared to most dive bars with craft mixes and infused simple syrups). Sip on Carrboro Mule or a Mezcaltini, and whatever you do, don’t miss out on checking out the mosaic sea shell sink in the bathroom.

The Cardinal Bar

It’s a dive bar with hot dogs, but some frequenters might reverse and say it’s a hot dog bar with beers. Whatever the case, it’s a good time. Expect lots of canned brews, rotating local taps, and, of course, a simple hot dog menu with all the accoutrements to add on (there’s a vegetarian dog included). The ambiance is neither that of a bar or a restaurant, but somewhere in between, just on the outskirts of Raleigh’s downtown proper — and hidden just enough that it evokes a chill, regular crowd. Co-owner Jason Howard recently opened an outpost in neighboring town Clayton.

Johnson Street Yacht Club

Located in the old Office Tavern space, Johnson Street Yacht Club brings an elevated dive bar experience to downtown Raleigh — equipped with an adult slide. Note: there are rules and you can’t drink and slide. The website is quirky, noting “We’ve got booze. We take credit cards but we don’t take no shit. Behave yourself. Salty women welcome. Triflers need not apply.” There’s ample outdoor seating plus fun rotating cocktails (a frozen Dark ‘N’ Stormy, anyone?) — and an ever-changing, random food menu.

The Ugly Monkey Party Bar

On Morgan Street in Raleigh, the Ugly Monkey Party Bar draws customers in with its neon-lit sign. It gives off vibes of a ridiculously good time but also a massive hangover when walking by. If you’ve witnessed this bar, you know why. Cheap shots, rum buckets, pole dancing (on the bar), open mic night, karaoke, and more. All that said, yes, it’s still divey and locals frequent the joint for a drink or two. Line up the whiskey shots, sit back, and enjoy the atmosphere. It’s also wise to plan on taking the next day off.

Slims Raleigh

Slims is considered a music venue, but it’s got all the right dive bar vibes and has been a Raleigh staple since 1999. Shows are up close and personal, and there’s a patio out back where cigarettes and socialization happen. Upstairs, there’s a pool table and lounge, should you crave a more intimate setting. While it’s a dive bar the spot takes booze seriously and offers a wide variety of spirits and beers — and the price is always right.

Hot Shots Hideaway Bar

Grab your friends and spend an afternoon drinking cheap drinks and playing pool. It’s Cary’s version of a modern-day Cheers and a spot that feels like a home away from home to locals — with video games, dartboards, and pinball. TVs are focused on sports and drink specials, including $8 pitchers and very cheap cocktail offerings, which are a big draw. It’s nothing fancy and that’s a good thing.

Johnson Street Yacht Club a tiny place away from the hustle/bustle of Glenwood Ave. There's a small bar with a pool table and a jukebox inside. Outside there's a patio area with chairs/tables to chill/hangout at. Definitely a chill vibe to the place and nothing pretentious at all. Just a cool local place to go hang out and drink a few beers.
