The classic sailing brands every yacht owner should know

Whether it's competitive sailing  you're into or relaxing on board your superyacht as your cruise the Mediterranean , these are the best brands to ensure you fit right in on the choppy seas or at the superyacht regatta . From high-tech performance apparel for braving the elements to chic leisurewear for relaxing on deck, you'll look and feel the part in these brands.

With 50 years experience creating cutting-edge performance gear, few brands are more synonymous with sailing than Musto . With emphasis on practicality and innovation combined with quality crafting, Musto apparel is made for adventure with style.

The history: In 1964 the brand’s founder Keith Musto competed in the Tokyo Olympics as part of the British sailing squad. It was during the relentless training for the competition that he realised their uniform of Guernsey sweaters and flannel trousers wasn’t cutting it and set out to create a line of revolutionary technical sailing apparel.

To further develop its advanced materials, Musto teamed up with W. L. Gore to create a tough yet breathable waterproof fabric that could endure the brutal conditions of ocean sailing. Together the brands produced an extra-durable Gore-Tex membrane. Twenty years later the material is still at the core of Musto’s renowned HPX range.

Henri Lloyd

Henri Lloyd’s sailing collection lies at the heart of the brand. Its connection with the sea began when co-founder Henri Strzelecki designed the first sailing jacket with a Velcro fastener. Since then the brand has continued to blend heritage with modern style to create lines that are both practical and sophisticated.

The history: Founded in 1963 in the British city of Manchester, Henri Lloyd quickly found favour with the sailing community for its pioneering use of new technologies and man-made materials.

Just three years after its launch early circumnavigation adventurers such as Sir Francis Chichester, Sir Robin Knox-Johnson and Sir Ranulph Fiennes began to choose Henri Lloyd’s high-tech gear. This tradition continues today both on and off the water with Henri Lloyd being the choice of four-time Olympic gold medallist and America’s Cup competitor Sir Ben Ainslie .

Famed for its iconic sailing footwear, Dubarry takes inspiration from Galway’s boating heritage with the tough elements of the brand’s homeland echoed in the durability of its products.

The history: In 1937 the Dubarry co-operative company was established to provide employment in the small town of Ballinasloe on the west coast of Ireland. Thanks to their comfort, water resistance and unbeatable grip, the brand soon became known for its signature sailing footwear.

Now a globally recognised brand, Dubarry’s heritage still continues to influence its future. Through combining traditional design with high-tech materials each product is meticulously designed to give the best performance.

From creating the world’s first boat shoe to becoming a modern nautical icon, Sperry is renowned for the durability, comfort and timeless style of its designs.

The history: Founded in 1935 by avid sailor Paul Sperry, the ambitious quest to create the perfect sailing shoe began when Sperry slipped and fell overboard while out on the water off Long Island. Sperry spent months in his workshop in New Haven trying to perfect his non-slip sole when eventually inspiration came from an unlikely source - his dog. He patented a design that carved indentations into the soles of his shoes to replicate the grooves in his dog’s paws thus providing traction on the slippery surfaces of the deck.

After the launch of the first shoe, every single member of the Cruising Club of America wrote to Sperry requesting a pair of his innovative Top-Siders. Ever since Sperry has been the go-to brand for boating footwear and a key component in casual sailing style.

For stormy seas: Cold Bay Duck Boot, £109, sperry.com

Helly Hansen

The original pioneer of the three-layer concept, Helly Hansen has a history of product innovation that blends Scandinavian design signatures with inspiration drawn from the practicalities of living in some of the harshest environments on earth.

The history: After years battling tough conditions on the Norwegian Sea, captain Helly Juell Hansen began to produce his own oilskin jackets, trousers and sou’wester hats. Each piece was made from a course linen soaked in linseed to make it weather proof.

From these humble beginnings on the fjords of Scandinavia in 1877, Helly Hansen has grown to become a leading global sailing brand. Offering the optimal combination of performance, protection and style, its progressive designs continue to protect and enable professional sailors around the world.

This Australian apparel brand has become a household name for sailors and Olympians globally. Pushing the boundaries on design and evolving their technical clothing, Zhik caters for all weather conditions both in functionality and style.

The history : Founded in 2003, Zhik’s range of wetsuits and dinghy gear completely changed the design approach for performance clothing and have been rapidly adopted by sailors across the globe.

Since then Zhik has developed their own specialist proprietary and trademarked fabrics including Isotak® a breathable, waterproof offshore fabric that is four times more durable that equivalent fabrics, the lighter Aroshell® breathable fabric and Superwarm®, a four-way stretch, extremely warm and thin neoprene fabric. In 2019 Zhik launched a range of ECO wetsuits, made from entirely natural plant-based fabrics and recycled plastic bottles.

Popular Sailing Clothing Brands To Wear In 2024

These are the freshest sailing brands for nautical chic looks.

Best Sailing Brands

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Gaastra Online Shop

Whether you’re a seasoned yachty or just getting started on an aspect of sailing you need the right gear to get the job done and one of the most fundamental aspects of sailing is clothing.

When it comes to sailing clothes there’s no discrimination whether you’re racing in the America’s Cup or simply dawdling around in the harbour. Having the right gear can make all the difference especially when technical innovation comes into play to provide unprecedented levels of wind-blocking and waterproofing.

Are we the sailing types? Hell yes, we’re big fans of Sail GP, America’s Cup, and Sydney to Hobart, so we know what sailing gear you should be seen in. So let’s begin.

Helly Hansen

Helly Hansen

Helly Hansen

  • Clothing that can handle the harshest conditions
  • Timeless designs that never go out of style
  • They offer weather-resistant clothing
  • They are fully seam-sealed
  • They’re on the pricier side

In 1877, Mr. Helly Hansen saw a need for clothing that would protect him from the harsh Norweigan elements whilst he was working on his boat. His wife then started soaking linen in linseed oil to create a waterproof material that would protect Mr Hansen and his workers whenever they were out on their boats. They then started offering this clothing to others and Helly Hansen was born.

To this day, Helly Hansen has continued to engineer sailing clothing that can handle the harshest of conditions, enabling their wearers to work, perform and survive just about anywhere. Not only are Helly Hansen garments weather resistant, but the brand’s Norweigan heritage has heavily influenced their minimalistic and timeless, typically Scandinavian design.

Musto

  • The clothing is built for maximum performance
  • It’s very breathable
  • The items are waterproof and windproof
  • The fit is comfortable and keeps you confident
  • It can be harder to take care of

For over 50 years, Musto has been engineering cutting edge sailing apparel. Their sailing clothing has been used by adventurers, America’s Cup racing teams and couples cruising the world on their family yacht.

The brand was started by Mr Keith Musto, a British Olympic sailor who realised in order to win, he had to be lighter, fitter and stronger than all of his competition. After starting his fitness regime, he soon realised that traditional sailing clothing compromised his ability to sail at his best, so he set out to make clothing that would enable him to perform. As a result, he ended up winning the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in his Musto gear.

To this day, Musto continues to engineer fabrics and materials that will allow wearers to be comfortable in any condition.

ZHIK

  • Increased stretch for unparalleled comfort
  • They use outstanding padding to keep you comfortable in all situations
  • Original and attractive designs
  • The buckles are heavy-duty ones that provide extra comfort
  • They don’t have many colours available for all items

ZHIK was founded just prior to the 2004 Athens Olympics when it was noticed that sailing clothing could do with a spark of innovation. Since then ZHIK has engineered some of the highest performing waterproof clothing for sailors and has combined it with a fresh new look that is very modern, in a world dominated by tradition.

They are the kit of choice for both the Australian and New Zealand sailing teams and also sponsor Sail GP and Volvo Ocean Race teams, all of which need technically proficient gear that will handle any condition.

North Sails

North Sails

  • They recycle their old products
  • Versatile products that can be easily styled and used
  • You can choose from multiple colour options
  • They use the GORE-TEX Pro technology to keep you dry
  • The equipment can be quite expensive

North Sails was started by American Sailor and Olympic Gold Medalist, Lowell North in 1957. Originally he focused on making the most technically advanced sails that were faster than any competitors. The brand continues to make these ultra-high performance sails and has used their ethos to also create a lifestyle clothing line.

Their sailing clothing combines both function and form which performs in harsh conditions and looks great doing it. They offer a range of technical, high-performance gear as well as a more traditional lifestyle line so no matter your style of sailing, North Sails will have you covered.

Nautica

  • They focus a lot on design
  • They mix traditional and modern styles
  • The clothing is more affordable
  • Many designs feature zipped pockets for more security
  • Their clothing is not that technically advanced

Born in 1983, Nautica is a leading lifestyle brand for men. Influenced by the nautical lifestyle and designs, Nautica has focused more on making everyday clothing for men as opposed to other sailing clothing brands that were born out of a need to defeat the elements.

Whilst Nautica might not offer sailing clothing that is as technically advanced as others, their focus on design has enabled them to lead the industry from a style perspective. They combine both traditional nautical designs with a modern perspective and forward-thinking styles.

Henri Lloyd

Henri Lloyd

  • The brand relies on constant innovation
  • Their waterproof clothing is aesthetically pleasing
  • They use a non-corrosive zipper
  • You get 15% off on your birthday if you join the community
  • You have to spend a lot for free delivery

Henri Lloyd was founded by Henri Strzelecki a Polish war hero and Angus Lloyd in 1964 in Manchester, England. They pioneered the use of waterproof fabrics and materials in clothing. They also made other innovations including the first non-corrosive zipper as well as the use of velcro in waterproof garments.

To this day Henri Lloyd continues to innovate in order to remain on the leading edge of waterproof clothing. They also focus heavily on design and offer some of the most aesthetically refined waterproof sailing clothing available.

Today the brand offers a range of lifestyle and recreational sailing clothing which embodies Italian effortless cool. They also offer technical garments for those looking to face the harshest conditions mother nature can throw at them.

  • The relief zip is durable and waterproof

Since then, Gill has continued to evolve and develop to create clothing for all facets of sailing and all conditions sailors encounter.

Gill is the sailing clothing of choice for current America’s Cup champions, team New Zealand. To complement their clothing, Gill also offers footwear and accessories for sailors.

Gill Marine are another of our all-time favourite sailing brands. We have their OS2 series jackets and waterproof trousers as our offshore sailing kit and the quality is unmatched.

Gill Marine is a British brand (this isn’t the reason we love them!) The company was founded in the 1970s by Nick Gill, a keen sailor who saw a need for high-quality, technical sailing gear. Today, Gill is a globally recognized brand that offers a wide range of products for sailors of all levels, including sailing jackets, trousers, gloves, sailing bags , and footwear. They even make a great sailing drysuit .

Gill sailing gear uses advanced fabrics and technologies in its products. For example, the brand’s sailing jackets often feature Gore-Tex® or eVent® membranes, which provide exceptional waterproofing and breathability.

Gill also uses a range of other fabrics and technologies, such as UV protection and moisture-wicking properties, to ensure that its products perform at the highest level in a variety of weather conditions.

Another hallmark of Gill’s products is their attention to detail and functionality. Many of the brand’s jackets, for example, have numerous pockets and features such as adjustable cuffs and hoods to help sailors stay comfortable and focused while out on the water. a girl sailing while wearing the sailing brand henri lloyd

Henri Lloyd is one of those sailing brands that you don’t often see cruisers wearing, but they make serious sailing gear in the same kind of price range as the above brands.

Henri Lloyd was founded in 1963 by Henri Strzelecki and Angus Lloyd, who were passionate sailors. They offer a wide range of products for sailors of all levels, including sailing jackets, trousers, gloves, and footwear.

My first sailing jacket was a Henri Lloyd offshore jacket. I was actually from a charity shop and was a round the world clipper jacket. I don’t actually know how old it was but I’m guessing it must have had a lot of previous use, so I was a little doubtful about how long it would hold up.

I have to say though that it’s been fantastic. It’s not the best for casual coastal sailing as it’s a little harder to get on and off with all the rubber seals, but when I’ve used it in anger it does keep me warm and dry, even after all these years. It makes the perfect winter sailing jacket .

It’s a stylish jacket too, that fits well over a few layers.

My one complaint is that it isn’t very breathable so I do get quite hot under the collar when working the winches or if the sun comes out briefly. It’s probably a little too hardcore for sailing the Med!

Overall, Henri Lloyd is a brand that deserves to be seen worn more! They make quality gear that stands the test of time.

Zhik is a brand we hadn’t heard of until we met our Australian friends! Which isn’t surprising as it is an Australian brand.

The company was founded in 2003 by Brian Conolly, a former Olympic sailor. They make a range of products for sailors of all levels, including sailing jackets, wetsuits, gloves, and footwear.

Our friends own several different products from Zhik and are happy with it all. In particular, they love their sailing jackets which they say are warm and breathable in the changing Mediterranean climates. Honestly, I don’t think we’ve seen them without the jackets on!

Zhik’s products use advanced materials that stand up to the harsh marine environment. For example, the brand’s wetsuits often feature neoprene with a titanium lining that provides exceptional warmth and flexibility.

Zhik also uses a range of other materials and technologies, such as hydrophobic coatings and UV protection, to ensure that its products perform at the highest level in a variety of weather conditions.

Many of the brand’s jackets and pants have numerous pockets and features such as adjustable cuffs and hoods. The brand’s products often feature bold colors and sleek, minimalist designs that are both functional and stylish. This has helped to attract a wide range of customers, from serious racers to casual weekend sailors.

We can’t speak from our own experience, but our friends absolutely love their gear and won’t shop anywhere else now. That speaks pretty loudly of quality!

Dubarry uses a range of other materials and technologies, such as hydrophobic coatings and breathable fabrics, to ensure that its products perform at the highest level in a variety of weather conditions.

One of the things their customers love most about their products is the attention to detail and craftsmanship. Many of the brand’s jackets and trousers are made using traditional techniques and feature little details that you won’t find elsewhere.

They probably make the most stylish gear on this list (think old-fashioned class), but we think their clothes do lack some sailing-specific features that other brands on this list do a little better. Their shoes however are perfect for the job!

Sperry is an American brand that specializes in footwear, particularly boat shoes and other shoes designed for use on or near the water. The company was founded in 1935 by Paul Sperry, a sailor who wanted to create a shoe that provided better traction on wet surfaces.

Today, Sperry is a globally recognized brand that offers a wide range of footwear for men, women, and children.

One of Sperry’s most notable innovations is its patented “Razor-Siping” technology, which creates razor-thin grooves in the sole of the shoe to provide better traction on wet surfaces. This technology is used in many of the brand’s boat shoes and has helped to make Sperry a go-to brand for anyone who spends time on or near the water.

Another hallmark of Sperry’s footwear is its classic, nautical-inspired designs. The brand’s boat shoes are often made from high-quality materials such as leather and feature traditional designs that have become iconic in the sailing and boating communities.

In addition to boat shoes, Sperry also offers a range of other shoes that are designed for use on or near the water, such as sneakers, sandals, and boots.

In recent years, Sperry has also expanded its product line to include clothing and accessories that are inspired by its nautical heritage. These products often feature classic designs and high-quality materials, making them a popular choice for anyone who loves the outdoors and has an appreciation for timeless style.

With its patented technologies, classic designs, and commitment to quality, the company continues to be a top choice for anyone who wants footwear that can perform well in any conditions, while also looking great.

Slam is an Italian brand that specializes in sailing clothing and gear. The company was founded in 1978 by two brothers, Pasquale and Michele Truglio, who were passionate about sailing and saw a need for high-quality, technical sailing gear.

They’re not a big sailing brand and it’s uncommon to see people wearing their gear casually. They have a bit more of a reputation among race sailors and their gear tends to be a bit more suited to that.

Slam sailing gear is more expensive than a lot of brands on this list. They are trying to capture the professional market more than the casual cruisers market. If you’re into race sailing then their clothes are well worth checking out.

We like the designs of the Slam gear. It’s a little edgy and more trendy than some of the other clothes you’ll find on here.

The main problem we have with this sailing brand is the limited range for women. Their gear is far more tailored toward men, which is a shame. Hopefully this is something they’ll improve upon in the future.

The Right Sailing Clothes Brand For You

a close up of the zipper on some gill wear

Picking the right sailing clothes brand for you might not be the easiest with so many great options out there. Here are a few things to take into consideration.

Price is an important factor to consider when choosing a sailing clothes brand. While high-end brands often offer the best quality and performance, they can also be quite expensive. On the other hand, budget-friendly brands may not offer the same level of quality, but they can be a more affordable option for casual sailors.

When choosing a sailing clothes brand based on price, it’s important to determine your budget and what you’re willing to spend. If you’re on a tight budget, brands like Columbia or Salty Crew may be a good option as they offer quality products at a more affordable price point.

If you’re willing to spend a bit more, brands like Helly Hansen, Gill, and Henri Lloyd offer high-end sailing clothing that is designed for serious sailors and can withstand harsh weather conditions.

It’s also important to consider the value for money that a brand offers. Some brands may offer a higher price point, but their products may last longer or offer better performance than lower-priced brands.

It’s important to read reviews and do your research before making a purchase to ensure that you’re getting the best value for your money.

Ultimately, the choice of sailing clothes brand will depend on your individual needs and budget. It’s important to find a brand that offers quality products that fit your budget and will keep you comfortable and protected on the water.

a close up of the cuffs of a gill sailing brand top

When it comes to choosing a sailing clothes brand based on quality, there are several factors to consider. High-quality sailing clothing should be durable, comfortable, and able to withstand harsh weather conditions.

Brands like Gill, Helly Hansen, Henri Lloyd, North Sails, and Musto are known for their high-quality sailing gear, offering advanced technologies and materials that provide excellent performance and protection. They use high-quality materials like Gore-Tex, Primaloft, and Polartec, which are designed to keep sailors dry and warm in harsh weather conditions.

Another factor to consider when looking for high-quality sailing clothes is the level of attention to detail in the design and construction. Brands that pay attention to the little details like seam taping, reflective detailing, and adjustable cuffs can make a big difference in terms of comfort and performance.

In fact, if you want a proper sailing jacket don’t even consider one without rubber cuff seals. We tried using a raincoat once and just got totally soaking and miserable within an hour of being at sea!

It’s also important to consider the specific needs of your sailing activity. If you’re a competitive sailor, you’ll want high-quality clothing that can withstand high speeds and constant movement. If you’re a casual sailor, you may be able to get away with a less expensive brand that still offers good quality and comfort.

a sailor in the cockpit of a sailboat

Comfort is a crucial factor when choosing the right sailing clothes brand. Sailing can be a physically demanding activity, and it’s important to have clothing that is comfortable and allows for a full range of motion.

Brands like Helly Hansen, Gill, and Musto offer sailing clothes with ergonomic designs that are tailored to fit the body and provide comfort and flexibility. They use materials that are breathable, moisture-wicking, and lightweight, which help to keep sailors comfortable and dry during long periods on the water.

We tend to buy a size up which gives us the flexibility to layer up underneath and still have plenty of room to move. It’s always worked well and even when we don’t need extra layers, we’ve found the loose-fitting clothes to breathe better too.

It’s also important to consider the specific needs of your sailing activity. For example, if you’re sailing in hot weather conditions, you may want to choose a brand that offers clothing with UV protection and moisture-wicking properties to keep you cool and dry.

Another important factor to consider when choosing a sailing clothes brand for comfort is the fit. Clothing that is too tight or too loose can be uncomfortable and restrict movement. Brands like North Sails offer sailing clothes with a variety of sizing options to ensure a comfortable fit for all body types.

a girl at the helm of a sailboat with the sunset behind her

While performance and comfort are key factors when choosing a sailing clothes brand, style is also an important consideration for many sailors. After all, you want to look good and feel confident while you’re out on the water.

Fortunately, there are many sailing clothes brands that offer stylish and fashionable designs without sacrificing performance or comfort.

Brands like Roxy, Quiksilver, and Pelagic offer clothing with vibrant colors, trendy designs, and stylish cuts that are sure to turn heads and can be worn on and off the boat.

For sailing jackets, we love the look of our Gill gear. It has all the features you want, like reflective strips and neon hood, but they blend in well with the jacket so you can wear it the pub and not feel too out of place!

However, it’s important to remember that style should not be the only factor when choosing a sailing clothes brand. It’s crucial to prioritize quality, comfort, and performance when selecting your gear to ensure that you’re safe and protected while on the water.

If style is important to you, consider finding a brand that offers a balance of fashion and function. Look for sailing clothes with trendy designs and colors that also offer advanced technologies and materials that provide excellent performance and protection.

As you can see, there is a huge range of sailing clothes brands to choose from and what you go for will depend on your specific needs. Remember you don’t have to stick to one brand!

We love our jackets and trousers from Gill and Helly Hansen, and these would be our top picks for quality sailing gear. But we buy our less essential gear like T-shirts and sun hats from less expensive brands like Quiksilver and Columbia.

Consider what things you have to spend money on to stay safe on the water, and make sure that’s the gear you invest in.

‍ 12 Best Sailing Clothing Brands

The best sailing clothing brands are the best for a reason, as they have been able to master what it means to sail comfortably. Not only are these fashionable, but they provide the necessary quality that you need out on the water.

Every sailor understands the importance of the right clothing while sailing. If you have never experienced what it is like to not have the right clothing out on the water, you do not want to repeat that process in the event of a sunburn, soaked clothes, or potentially slipping with bad shoes.

Musto has been dominating the sailing clothing department for the last 50 years. They have consistently developed sailing apparel that has stood the test of time in terms of quality and performance.

While they have casual wear, their line of apparel is meant for the water. This was the purpose ever since Keith Musto, founder, decided he wanted sailing clothes after his appearance in the 1964 Olympics.

As he drew inspiration from his experiences, he has created one of the revolutionary lines of clothing brands for the occasion. Musto is geared towards anyone willing to sail in any condition, especially with quality materials that are waterproof and comfortable.

2. Helly Hansen

Back in 1877, the Scandinavian brand Helly Hansen hit the sailing clothing scene. They were the first company to showcase a three layer concept, especially in times when the weather gets brutal.

The company has shown innovation over the years with quality products and coating them in linseed to obtain a waterproof product. These include shoes, shirts, hats, and even oilskin jackets.

Their life jackets rank among some of the best in the industry. In fact, they are the number one choice for fisherman or offshore sailors wanting to endure extreme conditions.

Looking at today’s style, Helly Hansen still markets one of the most recognizable sailing clothing brands out there. This is due to their comfort and style, in addition to the quality of materials.

Looking at Zhik , you know right away that you are in good hands with athletic apparel in sailing. The company is not that old, as they were founded in 2003.

The company originated in Australia and has its name essentially plastered all over the Olympics. The beauty of this brand is that they are able to cover every aspect of sailing and even innovative items like dinghy wetsuits that make them stand out to the competition.

They also have some of the most comfortable life jackets for a decent price. This allows you to get the best bang for your buck when sailing.

Their environmentally friendly approach earns them bonus points while also providing quality you can count on. If you are aiming to get out on the water, Zhik can make it comfortable.

4. Gill Marine

Nick Gill founded Gill Marine back in 1975 when he was searching for a performance dinghy sailing gear. At the time, there were not a lot of options to choose when roughing it out on the water with a dinghy.

Gill spent a lot of time and money to help establish perfect designs for dinghy sailing. This also has to be good enough to handle harsh conditions and whatever the weather throws at you.

Gill Marine was a success and is still widely used today by the New Zealand's America’s Cup champions team. In addition, you can find comfortable apparel options such as shoes and hats to sport the brand off of your dinghy.

No sailing clothing list would be complete if you did not have Dubarry on the list. While known for their stylish and comfortable sailing boots, they also sport an apparel line to keep you comfortable no matter where you go.

The company originated in Ireland back in 1937 and is closely connected to Galway’s sailing heritage. Their line of sailing boots are the main attraction, as sailors across the globe love their comfort, grip, and water resistant properties.

In addition, they also have a line of sailing gear that you can trust. With quality materials throughout, you can rest assured when sailing that you have the right footwear for the job.

6. Henri Lloyd

Henri Lloyd is another quality sailing clothing brand that has roots back in the 1960’s in Manchester. The company was co-founded by Henri Strzelecki who came up with the concept of a durable sailing jacket with Velcro fasteners.

For over 50 years, they have been providing excellent value for wanting to show off your sailing attire. From their quick drying tech materials to their ocean ready shorts, they have just about everything you could want to wear out on the water.

The company is handled by experienced sailors that know first hand what sailors want when sailing. This lets you know instantly that they understand what it takes to go sailing.

7. Saint James

Saint James was inspired by French Navy uniforms back in 1889. As one one of the oldest sailing clothing brands out there, they have successfully remained in business with their classic style.

They have a huge following in France, where the company originally took off, and have established some footwork in the United States. Over the years, they have been able to adapt to changing consumer tastes but also remain true to their roots.

They even have the nickname, “nautical sweater specialist”, for having stylish attire for when you are sailing. No matter how old you are, they have different styles and sizes for all shapes and sizes.

Slam was established back in 1979 and is a well regarded technical collection in sailing apparel. They have a wide range of clothing options for casual sailing, yachting, and professional sailing.

Being that it has roots in Italy, it is one of the most popular sailing clothing brands in Europe. In fact, they are one of the biggest clothing manufacturers.

Not only are their clothing options appealing to the eye, but it serves a practical purpose in combating the elements on the water. Their success has long been driven by Olympic stars, but anyone can feel like one once they purchase their gear.

Sperry has a reputation for being a top dog in boating shoes. In fact, they are given credit for being the first to develop a boating shoe.

Paul Sperry founded the company back in 1935 and put together a revolutionary design for his boating shoe concept. Today, they still rank as one of the best boating shoes on the market.

Sperry’s success stemmed from having a comfortable shoe that was reliable to walk on wet surfaces. No matter if you are a casual sailor or professional, Sperry’s are an excellent option.

10. Navis Marine

It was not that long ago when Navis Marine entered the sailing apparel scene. Back in 1999, the company put out their line of sailing clothing that was affordable, comfortable, and practical.

Although they are located in China, they are serving markets all over the world for sailors. This gives them a slight edge when providing cheaper options.

They even have over 500 options to choose from when looking at performance styles and designs. No matter what your budget is, anyone can relate to Navis Marine.

11. North Sails

In 1957, North Sails stumbled upon something big. Olympic Gold Medalist Lowell North founded the company that would eventually market to over 150 different regions across the world.

There are similarities when looking at other brands' beginnings, but North Sails managed to develop high quality sails at first. After that successful endeavor, they added a clothing line to the mix.

With a combination of the two, sailors can have excellent quality in their sails and have the clothes to experience life on the water. Depending on your tastes, you can even find clothes here to fit your budget.

12. Nautica

The brand Nautica was named after the Latin term “nauticus”, which means ship. They rank among the top brands for sailing clothing, especially for the men’s side of the brand.

The brand had a primary focus on fashion, rather than appealing to life on the water. Sailors could look great on or off the boat and feel comfortable.

They might be the only brand that caters more to fashion than solving problems on the water. Nonetheless, they are still a revolutionary brand for sailing clothing.

How to Find the Right Sailing Clothing Brand

There are a lot of variables that come into play when trying to find the best sailing clothing brands. These factors are price, comfort, and practical use. You might also consider brands that change with consumer tastes and update designs.

Reading reviews of different sailing clothing brands is a good place to start if you find comparable clothes. No doubt, it would be a good idea to compare your options before deciding on what works best for you.

You also want to consider the type of sailing you are encountering. For example, there is no need to purchase a wetsuit if you only plan on gently cruising on the coast. A wetsuit would be ideal for dinghy sailing, or at least something a little more aggressive on the water.

Price makes a huge difference in anything you decide to purchase in life, so the comparisons make sense in sailing clothing brands. Just because a shirt costs a ton of money does not mean it is the absolute best on the market.

If you do your research, you should be able to find competing brands that can offer you good prices. If something is cheaper with a range of reasonable results, then one brand could have a better sailing shirt than another.

Price may also indicate the quality of what you intend to use it for. Looking at sailing life jackets in comparison to the ones you find at a cheaper sporting goods store, it makes sense to buy the more expensive one that you know is designed specifically for what you intend to do.

In addition, it would not hurt to have a budget set up before you decide to buy any clothing brand. This way you will be better prepared to what you can afford.

More often than not, comfort trumps everything else. No matter what the price is, most sailors will purchase their sailing clothing for what is most comfortable.

If you plan on wearing something for an entire day, you want to make sure it is comfortable. So not only do you want a fair price, you want it to be worth wearing for many hours at a time.

Whether it is a long sleeve shirt to keep the sun’s rays off of you or a sailing hat, you need it to work as described. This also takes into account how reliable the brand is. Being reliable is another aspect that usually goes hand in hand with comfort in clothing.

Practical Use

You want to be sure that whichever brand you choose is something that you can use for a long time. If you plan on purchasing a pair of sailing boots, you want them to last a while instead of wearing out a few times at sea.

If you are not sure what something is used for, then reading up on certain apparel items is worth your time. This way you can find out exactly what you need and avoid purchasing things you do not.

You might find yourself buying an extra layer of clothes for cold weather sailing that you did not think about the first time. Whichever sailing you intend to do, make sure you research exactly how the clothing plays a role.

Updated Designs and Functionality

Some brands have a product that they have promoted for 100 years, while others constantly change up their lineup. A popular clothing brand has to appeal to what consumers want to wear.

For sailing clothing brands, there are some comparisons to be made but mostly these brands have their own niche. You can find a handful that still sport the same shirts over the years while others update their look.

The best sailing clothing brands know how to adapt to consumers tastes and what they need on the water. Brands that can improve designs to fit customers needs are definitely going to make them more popular.

The  functional and utilitarian gear  is designed for sailors, by sailors, and even categorises its clothing by sailing type – offshore, coastal, inshore and dinghy.

Helly Hansen's oilskin sailing jacket is resistant to the weather and allows you to move freely when at sea

Its  cachet  comes  from being an authentic  and practical  workwear brand ,  largely thanks to  its founder , captain Helly Juell Hansen , who  began to produce his own oilskin jackets,  trousers  and sou’wester hats  to keep warm and dry on the  Norwegian Sea . A stint in the 90s saw the brand temporarily gain popularity as streetwear, but today, the HH logo is  largely observed  at sea (or on the slopes ) and  gives sailing professionals and amateurs alike the chance to battle the harshest and most unpredictable of elements in comfort and style.

Sometimes, it takes experience at the helm to know what works best. Musto’s founder,  Keith Musto , was a seasoned professional sailor who took part in the 1964  Tokyo Olympics as part of the British sailing squad  before he went on to give his name to one of the b est sailing  clothes  brands in the industry.

Keep dry and warm come rain or wind with a Musto Gore-Tex jacket

His frustration with the GB team’s apparel ( Guernsey sweaters and flannel trousers )  drove him  to design a range of fashionable, practical and comfortable   clothing for  all  sailors , and   Musto  was born . Together with W. L. Gore, he later developed a technical fabric that was both breathable and waterproof, which they named Gore-Tex, and  which  remains  the  gold standard for waterproof  clothing technologies to this day.

If ever there was an informal yachting uniform, the ubiquitous boat shoe spotted on any self-respecting dock would be top of the list. For more than 80 years, Sperry’s hand-crafted footwear has transcended gender and age to deliver both comfort and durability in a casual setting.

Sperry boat shoes standout of the crowd due to the patterned Wave-Siping technology soles

The popular footwear was  invented in 1935 by American  sailor  Paul Sperry , who   notic ed  his dog's ability to run easily over ice without slipping.  He  cut  siping  (thin slits)  into  the rubber soles of his  shoes  to  improve traction in wet or icy conditions,  and  a  product  perfect for boating  was born. When he was inundated by requests from fellow sailors, including  every single member of the Cruising Club of America ,   he founded his eponymous  company ,  Sperry Top-Sider .

Henri Lloyd

Celebrating 60 years in 2023, Henri Lloyd  yacht clothes  are the ultimate representation of foul weather gear turned global icon.  Henri Strzelecki, who was universally known as “Mr Henri ”,   teamed up with  financier Angus Lloyd  to  revolutionise  waterproof clothing.  Henri’s idea was  to  take “ Bri-nylon ”,  a new lightweight  fabric of the 1960’s ,  to create  durable,  flexible clothing for sailors and mountaineers .

Eco-friendly and 100 percent waterproof Henri Lloyd jacket to date, made with recycled DRI-PRO Pro face fabric

It was the first range of clothing to be fitted with a durable tape to create  waterproof seam s and  remains  a replicated benchmark to this day.   Henri -Lloyd also pioneered the use of  Velcro  on clothing, the first non-corrosive zip,  and  integrated harnesses and buoyancy within jackets . Global ambassadors, from  Sir Robin Knox-Johnston  and Dennis Connor to Sir Ben Ainslie have worn the brand like a badge of honour , not to mention every self-respecting fashionista.

From h igh-performance  sailing  boots,  trainers  and deck shoes with amazing grip  to s ailing  jackets, fleeces, polos and shorts full of technical features and style , Dubarry is a stalwart of sailing attire.  Rooted in Irish  craftsmanship  and  Galway’s great sailing heritage  yet named after a  beautiful French courtesan and mistress of Louis XV, Madame du Barry , to give the brand continental appeal, Dubarry first found favour in the manufacture of its leather  moccasin deck shoe .

Dubarry boots are luxuriously comfortable and resolutely functional, providing you with excellent traction on slick decks and complete freedom of movement

In the 1990s, the  performance footwear  brand obtained a Gore-Tex licence and  launched the world’s first ever waterproof and breathable leather sailing boot called Shamrock .  Now revered as a universal country clothing brand, it  remains  a strong staple on the sailing scene.

Nautica’s  ocean sailing clothing  may be more activewear than foul weather, but for 40 years the global brand has produced elegant knitwear and shorts that perfectly reflect the nautical chic aesthetic. F ounded by  American  designer David Chu in  1983, it cemented its reputation among the yachting elite a decade later when it became  the official brand of the   US Sailing Team in the  1993  Olympic Games .

Nautica's Sustainably Crafted collection sees the brand utilising responsibly-sourced fabrics derived from wood pulp and other organic materials

Today, the brand’s vision focuses on spotlighting change makers, and in 2020 it launched its  Sustainably Crafted, collection of environmentally   conscious   styles designed with a bluer world in mind .

When it comes to the best sailing cloth brands, there’s no difference whether you’re racing in America’s Cup, Barcolana’s Regatta, or simply cruising around in a bay. Having the best sailing gear can make a huge difference, especially when technical variants come into play to provide unprecedented wind-blocking levels, waterproofing, and, of course, comfort.

Helly-hansen.

Helly Hansen  is a Norwegian producer of sailing gear headquartered in Oslo, Norway. This sailing clothing brand was established in 1877 when boat captain Helly Juell Hansen found a better way to stay shielded from the Norwegian harsh weather conditions. Shortly thereafter, Captain Hansen and his wife Margrethe launched a business producing waterproof oilskin jackets, trousers, hat, and waterproof canvases made from rough linen soaked in flaxseed oil – and the Helly Hansen legend began!

Helly Hansen gear is worn and trusted by sailors worldwide, but it is not the most budget-conscious clothing brand you can choose; however, it is probably the best when it comes to sailing jackets.

Helly Hansen offers the widest variety of clothing and is probably the most versatile and overall the best clothing brand out there.

Gill is one of the best marine clothing brands, founded in 1975. In 1975, the company’s founder, Nick Gill, was an avid sailor who used his father’s factory in Nottingham to produce truly capable sailing apparel that could offer both protection and comfort.

Gill is still based in the UK, where they design and test all their garments and they have grown to become one of the best marine clothing brands in the world. Also, they equip sailing teams from round-the-world.

Inspired by their sailing heritage, they also offer lifestyle clothing that can be worn anywhere but are still designed with their marine lineage in mind.

Today their clothing line utilizes a wide range of technologies, from Activated Carbon base layers to SuperFabric™; which is the most abrasive-resistant type of fabric in the world. When sailing in foul weather conditions, saltwater comes at you from everywhere. For that reason, Gill tests their clothing in-house and on the water to withstand the worst weather conditions.

That means whatever weather condition you find yourself in – sea, shore, or inland – they’ve already engineered the best clothing kit to perform for you.

Harken (Gloves)

Harken  is a global corporation that specializes in performance sailing hardware and industrial solutions, headquartered in Wisconsin, US. When Harken first started, it was housed in a 60-foot trailer in 1967 by brothers Peter and Olaf Harken. Originally, they built sailboats under the name Vanguard. However, they kept the hardware business separate so they could sell to competing boatbuilders.

In 1986, the Harken brothers sold Vanguard Sailboats to Stephen Clark in Rhode Island so they could concentrate on hardware. Harken hardware has been the golden standard in the racing segment for many years.

Harken equipment may be found on racing boats as small as the 7-foot dinghies to megayachts and ocean racers. They are famous for making hardware like swivels but they also make some of the best sailing gloves on the market today.

Henri Lloyd

Established in Manchester in 1963,  Henri Lloyd  is a British clothing brand specializing in sailing clothes. They manufacture some of the most high-end sailing clothes available today. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, they have implemented a direct-to-consumer business model. They are only selling directly through their own websites and retail locations. That way, they have cut out the middlemen who raise retail prices, which means they can offer the same excellent quality products at affordable prices permanently. They are still an expensive brand, don’t get me wrong, but they do offer some great quality products.

>> Buy Henri Lloyd from eBay

Navis Marine

Established in 1999,  Navis Marine  is a sailing clothing manufacturer specializing in designing and manufacturing performance foul weather gear for coastal and offshore sailing.

Navis Marine has a rigorous research and development process. The team is always looking for ways to innovate, blending new technology with feedback from their customers, and test sailors to create unique apparel solutions. The Navis Marine design team looked for materials with the same properties; able to work with the body and protect against the elements. However, they use lighter and more breathable materials than traditional marine fabrics.

They offer an excellent alternative to more famous brands like Helly-Hansen at a fraction of the cost. Actually, a friend of mine bought one of their jackets last year, and I was impressed with the product’s quality and durability. I just had to mention them in this article after that.

Helly Hansen

helly hansen sailing brand

What makes Helly Hansen unique among other boat sailing brands is the fact that this company first introduced the 3-layers concept. This is one of the nautical clothing brands that were born out of the sheer need to get better protective clothing in harsh weather conditions.

Helly Hansen is a Scandinavian brand founded in Norway in 1877. Since the beginning, Helly-Hensen has produced state-of-the-art sailing gear. These include the best sailing jackets .

One of the techniques they have been deploying to make their apparel waterproof is using course linen that’s been soaked in linseed.

Today, Helly Hansen is one of the best boat sailing brands worldwide and it provides the ideal blend of style, comfort, and efficiency.

Musto sailing brand

Musto has long been known as one of the most reputable clothing brands for sailors and sea lovers. This company goes back more than 50 years ago. They’ve been manufacturing premier sailing gear that stands the test of time.

Their clothes are specially designed for those who are ready to venture out on the seas.

The company’s founder, Keith Musto decided to create innovative technical sailing clothes after participating in the 64’s Olympics in the sailing squad. This event prompted him to design quality sailing apparel that could meet the needs of professionals.

What sets this brand apart are the quality materials they use, materials that are comfortable, 100% waterproof and able to withstand the harshest weather conditions.

zhik sailing brand

This company originates in Australia and is one of the brands you’re bound to see at the Olympics. This company aims to provide a comprehensive range of sailing apparel that can cover sailors’ needs in any weather.

Zhik is a fairly new brand that began in 2003. Their innovative dinghy gear and wetsuits took the concept of performance to a whole new level, which soon made them famous worldwide.

This company has a reputation for innovation and designing proprietary fabrics that ensure the highest level of comfort and functionality.

Moreover, they also promote an environmental-friendly approach by using sustainable materials in their clothing.

Gill Marine

gill sailing brand

This is one of the sailing brands that was born out of necessity, the founder’s necessity to create the dinghy sailing gear he wasn’t able to find on the market.

It all happened in 1975 when Nick Gill, an avid dinghy sailor took up the ambitious task of creating the perfect dinghy gear. He started investing time and energy and experimented with different designs in order to come up with the perfect sailing clothing for different settings and weather conditions.

Currently, Gill Marine is the number one choice for New Zeeland’s America’s Cup champions team. Besides sailing apparel, this company also produces shoes and accessories (such as sailing hats or gloves for sailing ).

Henri Lloyd

henri loyd sailing brand

This is another one of the best clothing brands for sailing whose story goes way back.

The company was founded in 1963 in Manchester. It all began when Henri Strzelecki, company co-founder, created a sturdy sailing jacket with Velcro fastener. Known as one of the top sailing brands on the market, this brand has been producing sailing products for over 50 years.

This brand is one of the pioneers in its domain and it has always promoted the use of man-made materials. Owned and operated by professional sailors dedicated to creating top-notch products for other passionate sailors, Henri Loyd is a great choice if you are looking for a new brand to represent your sailing passion.

dubbary sailing brand

We couldn’t be talking about nautical brands without mentioning Dubarry. This company is mostly known for the sturdy and reliable sailing footwear it provides.

The company was born in Ireland in 1937. Their products are tightly connected to Galway’s sailing heritage. The signature shoes they provide are famous worldwide among sailors and they are highly appreciated for their water resistance, durability, and excellent grip.

This Irish brand is known for making some of the best sailing gear in the world. Their carefully crafted footwear now deploys innovative high-tech materials.

sperry sailing brand

Sperry is a traditional sailing gear manufacturer that started its long and successful journey back in 1935.

The founder of the company was a sailor, Paul Sperry who decided to create the perfect sailing shoe after an unfortunate event that saw him plummet in the sea.

He came with a unique sole design that he also patented and that was able to provide good grip even on a wet deck. His innovative shoes soon became the preferred choice of the Cruising Club of America’s members and they continue to enjoy the same success both among professional and casual sailors.

They now provide some of the best sailing shoes on the market.

Saint James

Saint James Clothing for Sailing

Born from sailors’ need to be protected from wind and water, Saint James (known as the nautical sweater specialist) is the original purveyor of the iconic Breton Stripes shirt and also one of the top French marine clothing brands for men, women, and children.

Based in Normandy, Saint James was founded in 1889 in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel and has managed to stay contemporary and true to its heritage at the same time. Coco Chanel popularized the brand’s distinctive striped t-shirt in the twentieth century.

Saint James Clothing creates nautical-themed designs that are influenced by classic French Navy uniforms. This sailing clothing brand store offers a variety of vintage-inspired fits created in the village of Saint-James (France), ranging from Breton striped jerseys to soft knits.

The French State has now granted the 150-year-old brand the “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” label for its knitting excellence.

Today their clothing line is distributed around the world and we love to see how its nautical style is constantly being reinvented.

nautica sailing brand

Nautica is definitely among the best clothing brands for sailing. This company was born in 1983 and it is considered one of the premier men’s lifestyle brands.

What sets them apart is the fact that they drew inspiration from the nautical environment and applied it in their everyday clothes for men.

Unlike other companies that focused on solving practical problems while creating sailing clothes, Nautica focused on leveraging the typical style of this type of apparel.

They don’t put so much emphasis on the performance of their apparel, but on its good looks. Their attractive clothes boast a blend of traditional sailing designs with modern elements.

North Sails

North Sails sailing brand

This sailing gear company was founded in 1957 by Lowell North, a famous Olympic Gold Medalist.

Their story is similar to that of other nautical brands as it started from the founder’s ambitious desire to design a highly performant item, which, in this case, was a set of sails. He managed to design high-performance sails, but the company’s endeavor didn’t stop here as they have also started focusing on clothes.

Their apparel offers a practical solution that combines efficiency with style and aims to keep sailors safe and comfortable in any weather conditions.

Another great thing about the North Sails clothing line is that it offers both traditional and high-performance models so that you can find your match no matter what your tastes are.

slam sailing brand

This is one of the most famous European sailing brands. Founded in Italy, in the city of Genoa, Slam has gradually conquered a place among the biggest sailing clothes manufacturers.

Located on the Ligurian coast, Genoa was a perfect setting for a company trying to strive at creating prime quality sailing gear, inspired by the life and needs of seamen.

However, the key to their success was the tight collaboration with different Olympic sailors.

Nowadays, Slam offers a comprehensive array of lifestyle and recreational sailing clothes that perfectly capture the typical Italian craftiness and style. Their clothes are both visually appealing but also meant to help sailors face the harshest weather conditions.

Most Popular Nautical Clothing Brands: Helly Hansen, Musto, Henri Lloyd, Sperry, Slam

So much about sailing seems glamorous, especially when we have often painted scenarios of colorful sundresses swaying in the breeze of a sea-view sundeck. And while much of your Adriatic sailing holiday would likely feature that exact summer scene, this attire isn’t exactly up to the most serious sailing standards, especially when we consider those potentially treacherous winds on the high seas.

Fortunately, several nautical clothing brands have surfaced over the years to design the best apparel for life at sea , from high-tech and waterproof windbreakers and drysuits to handcrafted deck shoes that add a dash of style on board and land. And some of them are so good, you’ll be making room in your luggage in no time.

We’re bringing you the best nautical clothing brands to outfit your next sailing adventure.

Helly Hansen

Hailing from Norway, Helly Hansen is a pioneer in the nautical clothing brand scene , with roots dating to 1877! The over 140-year history began with Helly Juell Hansen himself, who opted for a solution to better protect himself from the rather harsh Norwegian weather. Hansen and his wife Margrethe first started by producing waterproof oilskin jackets, trousers, sou’westers, and tarpaulins made from linseed oil-soaked coarse linen. And the rest is history.

Today, Helly Hansen is an indispensable name in the sailing world, with gear worn by world-class sailors no matter which ocean or sea they’re sailing in. Helly Hansen prioritizes performance, protection, and safety when designing their nautical wear, with many first-to-market innovations developed from first-hand accounts in the world’s harshest environments. The most innovative was released in 2020 - the LIFA INFINITY PRO™ made without any added chemical treatments!

Helly Hansen’s sailing line ranges from waterproof jackets, smocks, and bibs to crew caps and quick-dry polos, all of which promise sustainability and breathability to deliver no matter where you are in the world. It’s no surprise, then, that this nautical clothing brand is a proud partner of some of the most iconic regattas and sailing associations in the world.

Musto

Musto is known as one of the world’s leading sailing brands with over 50 years of experience designing cutting-edge performance apparel. This tried-and-true British band was founded by Keith Musto, a member of the 1964 British Olympic sailing squad, who did the unthinkable by winning silver in Tokyo! However, sailing in Guernsey sweaters and old flannel trousers would no longer cut it for Musto, which prompted him to produce ground-breaking technical sailing apparel with a breathable and waterproof fabric. But Keith didn’t get into designing clothes straight away.

Keith first created sails with Edward Hyde under Musto & Hyde Sails before teaching himself the basics of manufacturing technical sailing clothing. After splitting from Musto & Hyde in 1980, Keith created the best sailing kit available, endorsed by the world’s best sailors.

Musto is unique because they want sailors to perform at their peak, using fabric technology to keep sailors dry and comfortable . All products are tested in the world’s most hostile environments to make sure they can endure all adverse weather, while their clothes, footwear, luggage, and accessories can be worn on leisurely sailing weekends too. Known as where style meets hi-tech performance, Musto is a British brand with an international outlook, with garments that promise lifetime longevity and durability. Today, their drysuits offer survival times of up to 3 hours in waters as cold as 5°C and have been worn by world-renowned sailors including Skip Novak, Grant Dalton, and Ellen McArthur!

Henri Lloyd

Henri Lloyd has celebrated its British sailing heritage for over six decades, all thanks to the mission of Henri Strzelecki, who endeavored to create the world’s best waterproof clothing. And in its illustrious 60-year history, Henri Lloyd’s garments have traveled the world and even became the chosen brand of the world’s most successful Olympic sailor, Sir Ben Ainslie!

Henri Lloyd is a pioneer in nautical clothing, creating many world firsts within technical clothing, like the invention of the nylon zip. But what makes Henry Lloyd genuinely stand out is its dedication to sustainability, ensuring clothing that is high quality, responsibly designed, and timeless that will endure all weather conditions no matter where you are on water or land.

In an effort to minimize their impact on the environment, Henri Lloyd aims to source 80% of their products in Europe, decreasing their carbon footprint and guaranteeing quality working conditions, while 100% of their new products are recycled, organic, or zero waste! From sailing jackets to legwear, mid-layers, baselayers, and accessories, these garments are made using the finest materials, providing first-class attire that is designed to last.

A brand so popular it is known beyond the sailing world, Sperry’s footwear legacy has been in the spotlight for over 80 years. Known as the ‘original prep icon’ and formerly as the Sperry top-sider, Sperry’s handcrafted heritage products span from boat shoes to loafers, sandals, slippers, boots, and oxfords, promising men and women alike will look their best while traversing the high seas or boat-themed parties.

The world’s first boat shoe was founded in 1935 by avid sailor Paul Sperry, whose fall overboard urged him to develop a non-slip shoe. He even drew inspiration from his cocker spaniel's paw, mimicking its traction-enhancing grooves for the first-ever Sperry shoe.

Over the last 80 years, Sperry’s American-style footwear has been worn both on and off the boat thanks to a timeless selection of styles and colors that have no bounds to any genre or generation. Sperry’s irresistible and functional style also strives to be environmentally conscious, with a commitment to quality, reliability, and comfort.

Sperry’s Authentic Original boat shoes are certainly their bestseller. However, their entire fashion-forward line can be found in the most prominent and trendiest retailers around the world, with two specialty stores and 40 outlet stores across the United States. Footwear News even named Sperry Top-Sider the Brand of the Year in 2009!

It all began when four sea-loving friends drinking wine decided to create a sailing clothing brand. And the first ‘Mickey Bear’ fleece designed for sailors came soon after.

Offering optimal performance and unmistakable style, Slam today is a Genoa gem that has been in business for over 40 years. Targeting competitive yachtsmen, women, and sailing enthusiasts, Slam manufactures practical, efficient garments and uses state-of-the-art technologies with a focus on performance to win no matter the weather.

Slam’s technical clothing is thus designed for competitive sailing, with an innovative line of high-performance wear created thanks to first-hand experience in regattas around the world. Using technological research from athletes on the ground resulted in a waterproof nautical clothing brand that can resist all weather conditions with freedom of movement, protection, and comfort at its core.

Slam has developed precious partnerships with sailors and international Yacht Clubs over the years, namely sponsoring the British Commodore’s Cup in the early 2000s. While Slam athletes also won gold medals at the 50th Rolex Giraglia and the Rolex Sydney to Hobart, the company’s garments were indeed taken to the next level when world champion yachtsman Russel Coutts agreed to be a tester, which revolutionized the brand and resulted in an America’s Cup win in 2010!

With a yachting line that is stylish enough to be worn on dry land, Slam has taken the cake as one of the best nautical clothing brands out there.

Boating is a water sport but when you want to stay warm and dry we have the jackets, shirts, pants and gear you need.

Jackets

Good quality boating apparel needs to look sharp, be comfortable and last multiple seasons. What makes boat clothing different from regular clothes? Boating apparel typically is water-proof or water resistant and is constructed of higher quality fabrics than non boat clothes. Top brands for boat clothing include Grundens, Xtratuff, Stearns, and Mustang

Depending on the use e.g. commercial boating versus recreational boating, boat clothing needs vary as well. If you are looking for offshore apparel, look for fully taped seams to keep water out, and for thicker material (even PVC) to keep water from soaking through and if required, for Hi-Visibility colors that are ANSI compliant. Some offshore apparel features reflective tape for extra safety. Layering clothing is also a great idea if boating in colder climates. Start with a base layer and look for moisture wicking fleece or wool. If you need commercial fishing or boating clothing that fits a woman’s body there are specific women's jackets , women's pants and bibs that are tailored for women.

Boating Apparel Features

If you are shopping for boating apparel as a recreational boater, look for clothing that is UV resistant, it might say UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor). Look for boat clothing that contains some spandex or other flexible material so that you can easily move about the boat. Water sport apparel used in sportfishing or hunting should also be moisture wicking to keep your body dry and if possible include vents under the arms and sides to allow heat to escape. Boating jackets and pants tend to have a higher water-resistent rating than standard raincoats or rain pants.

Rain Boots and boat shoes are also something to be considered when putting together a list of boat clothes to have before setting out on your voyage. For commercial fishing or professional boating look for rain boots that have extra non-skid soles that are 100% waterproof. For recreational fishing, look for the same requirements as commercial boots, but find them as ankle boots or boat shoes that are easier to slip on and off than regular rain boots. New to the market, are women's boating boots and shoes which come in a variety of smart desgins.

Specific Boat Clothing Types

Working out in the marine environment is unlike any other situation. For example, survival suits that are made to be donned quickly during an emergency. Survival suits are made to withstand icy cold water for long periods of time. Another unique type of boat clothes are fish processing clothing that is made generally of PVC and includes bibs , aprons , special gloves and wristers for safe and sanitary working situations. Foul weather gear is clothing that can withstand salty, cold, wet environments with special hats , jackets, boots and bibs to keep the cold out and warmth in. We can't forget life jackets and the many variations of them. Life jackets known as Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs), can be as simple as a fanny pack on your waist to a float coat with built in floatation.

Go2marine / LFS carries boat clothing apparel for every type of boater. Be sure to check the size charts for the boat clothes you are looking for to ensure the proper fit. We even have our own LFS branded apparel . If you can’t find the right water sport apparel or offshore apparel online, give us a call and we can help you with your purchase.

Luxury Rules at the Moscow Yacht Show

Maria Sapozhnikova

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.
