The marina operated by the Lühe Water Sports Club (WSC) and the Altländer Yachtzentrum (AYZ) marina in Grünendeich offers moorings on floating jetties pontoons that do not dry out at a constant water depth of 1.4 m to 2.2 m. do not fall dry. The long jetty with green marked guest berths is protected by Elbe islands. Shower, WC, electricity and water supply are available. In the House of the Maritime Landscape Lower Elbe in Grünendeich (Altes Land), near the Lühe jetty, retired captain Joachim Brill guides guests through the guests through the former nautical school on the in-house captain’s bridge. The Twielenfleth lighthouse houses an exhibition of ship models from 1893 to the present day, which can becan be visited on request (Tel. 04141-792061). The tour to Hollern-Twielenfleth can easily be combined with a visit to the open-air swimming pool. The open-air pool is located directly on the Elbe with a view of the large pots. From theLühe jetty, a ferry connects the two banks of the Elbe. 10 Important Facts You Should Know About Altes Land Hamburg

It is not common knowledge but the Altes Land (“Old Country”) Hamburg is the biggest contiguous fruit farming region in Northern Europe. When visiting the Altes Land prepare to be surrounded by apples and pears and cherries as far as your eyes can see. The handwriting of the Dutch, who colonised the area and turned it to orchards, is all over the region. Come join us on our tour through the Altes Land. It will be nothing like you expect.

Altes Land is very close to Hamburg

The region Altes Land is reclaimed marshland located in Lower Saxony and Hamburg. It sits downstream from Hamburg on the southwestern riverside of Elbe around the towns of Stade, Buxtehude and Jork. Buxtehude is easily accessible via S-Bahn from Hamburg. S-3 operates from Hamburg-Harburg and brings you in 20 minutes to Buxtehude. To reach Jork take the ferry to picturesque Cranz from Hamburg Blankenese. Either take your bike with you or alternatively rent one in Cranz and cycle the 5 km to Jork on the dyke.

Best time to visit is May to October

Obviously the main highlights of the year are the tree blossom and the harvest season. The cherry trees usually bloom from mid April to end May. The apple trees a bit later and faster, from beginning of May to end May. Don’t miss the opportunity to walk between the blooming trees, it is definetly breath taking! During the harvest season from August to October you have the chance to visit the farms, pick some fruits yourself for a small fee or just enjoy an Obstler (liquer made from apples) in the shade.

Take a bike tour

Exploring the Altes Land Hamburg by bike is the best choice. This way you come near the beautiful apple trees and will be able to stop and take pictures anytime. There are plenty of bike rentals everywhere in the region. If you are staying in one of the guest houses or apartements they will be able to provide you with bikes upon request. Take a bike ride on the dykes to overlook the plantations all the way down to the Elbe river.

You will see beautiful architecture

The area’s original reclamation and colonisation by Dutch settlers began as early as the 12th century. Today you clearly see a lot of Dutch features in the beautiful half-timbered houses such ase the wooden carving of swans arranged in a cross on the roofs. As common in the North, most houses are built of red bricks with a timber frame along with a reed decked roof. If you look closely the houses in the cities of Stade and Buxtehude are timbered in a black frame. The houses on the countryside in white. A very special feature are also the beautiful colored doors and gates. Rich farmes built this gates to indicate their wealth to passing travellers.

There are fruits everywhere

The main fruit you find in Altes Land are apples. Almost 80% of the trees in Altes Land are apple trees. Along with apples comes also cherries, pears and plums in smaller quantities. You come accross plenty of small farmers shops where you can purchase the regional products for a fair price. Our most favorite shop is the Obsthof Matthies (honest opinion, not sponsored!). The offers varies from the pure fruit supply to products made out of frutis such as marmelade, liquer and cakes. But you can also find meat and fish from the nearby farms. Definetly worth to check some of those shops out!

Traditions are still alive

Each year during the blossom season in May a new Blossom Queen recieves her crown. For one year the woman represents the Altes Land and its traditions on several occasions accross all Germany. She has the honors to wear the traditional wedding gown of beautiful black and white dresses and a crown full of flowers along delicate silver jewelry.

All over the region you find beautiful white wooden benches. Those are wedding benches and are made to honor the bridal couple. Besides they are usually located at especially beautiful places bridal couples like to visit. The first bridal bench was made for the peot Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and his wife in 1776. You can find it today in front of the registry office in Jork.

Altes Land is the best location for picnics

What could be more romantic than having a picnic between the blooming apple trees? Pack your food at home or even better, purchase a full picnic basket in one of the many farm shops. They come along in different sizes serving all kinds of diets. You will not be disappointed!

Fairytale feeling

As you might know Germany has a fairytale road connecting sites out of the Brothers Grimm fairytales. One of those fairytales namly the tale about the hare and hedgehog takes place in Altes Land. Close to Buxtehude you find the Lütje Heide (“Small Heath”) where the well known race took place. Small statues of the hare and the hedgehog are placed all over Buxtehude and it is a very fun and cute activity to try to find them all.

Good dining spots in Altes Land are plenty

Despite the towns in Altes Land being rather small they do offer a variety of good dining places well known beyond the borders of the region. Usually you find traditional German dishes on the menu. In addition seasonal offerings such as fish or game along with seasonal vegetables are quite common. A very unique place is the Mühle Jork. A restaurant located in an old mill. After having dessert you can take a stroll to admire the old building. Definetly worth a visit!

You will visit again

Unlike other places there is a certain magic about Altes Land wich makes you come back again and again. Before moving to Hamburg we knew little abouth this piece of Germany. It is the mixture of humor resulting from hard work and the most relaxed attitude which makes the people in Altes Land so irresistable. After trying your first apple pie in the shades of an apple tree sitting on a white wedding bench you will definitely and irresistibly fell in love with this region.

As one of northern Europe’s largest fruit-growing areas, Altes Land is not only a place where you can get away from it all and simply relax; there’s also a lot to see. The Alte Land is part of the Elbe marsh area and located in southwest Hamburg. It is surrounded by arms of water and gentle meadows. Especially in the spring when the apple trees are blossoming, or in July when the cherries are ripe – when they can simply be plucked from the tree – the Alte Land is especially beautiful. Cycling in the fruit paradise This area is an El Dorado for active holiday-makers, especially cyclists. On a cycling tour of the Alte Land, you can explore circa 100 km of main and subsidiary river dykes of this fruit paradise and enjoy nature at its best. The charming villages and chant visitors with their old half-timbered houses and nice gardens. Cosy cafés invite you to pause for a piece of cherry cake; regional products are offered for sale in the farm shops.  The Elbe cyclist and hiker’s shuttle is a convenient option for families with children to discover the Alte Land. It travels along the Elbe and connects the towns of Horneburg and Balje. In-between stretches can easily be covered with the shuttle when young explorers get too tired from lots of pedalling.  Additional activities in the Alte Land The seemingly endless open landscape of the Alte Land is also made for hiking or shorter walks. Walking tours through the fruit orchards are a highly special experience: They provide visitors with fantastic views and hobby photographers with many wonderful motifs. The kilometre-long dykes invite holiday-makers to take extensive treks. The huge ships on the Elbe can also be marvelled at from the river banks. Idyllic villages are perfect for window shopping and relaxing. Those who enjoy a bit of luxury can take a tour on a horse-drawn coach or covered wagon. “Bosseln” is regional pastime found here that offers an entertaining diversion. Two teams roll a hard rubber ball along a course; the team that reaches the goal with the fewest throws wins. Altes Land near Hamburg – many activities for young and old. Events in Alte Land Altländer Apfeltage | September two November Apples from the Alte Land are well known far beyond the region! This is why they have their own Festival: The Altländer Apfeltage, or “Alte Land Apple Days”. Many fascinating events take place during the apple-picking season; you can also replenish your own stockpiles of apples here as well! Altländer Blütenfest | May For nearly 40 years, the first weekend in May in the Alte Land is reserved for the traditional crowning of the Blossom Queen! She represents the Alte Land and the fertility of this unique place. The Blossom Queen is celebrated for two whole days in a large festival-site and with a parade, concert and fireworks.  Altländer Kirschenwoche | June/July The Alte Land Cherry Week is always held during the first week of July, when it’s time to pick the sweet fruit from the tree. Tours, concerts, farmyard festivals and the Alte Land Cherry Market in Jork takes place at this time.

Apple Picking is More Fun in Germany (My Experience in Altes Land)

In my opinion, the best times to visit are spring because of the beautiful blossoms, and late summer/fall for apple picking! We went in early September and had perfect weather, along with alllll the apples. We picked the Santana and Jonagold because those were our favorites that were in season (both were a little sweet/tart and more crispy.)

We even happened to be there when a bunch of politicians were, so I got to listen to them speak (although it was all in German, but ya know, the experience, plus one of them had flecks of glitter in his hair which was interesting.)

This looks like such a fun day! The surroundings are so pretty too! I feel like I can see that the buildings are inspired by the Dutch but that might just be my mind playing games with me because you told me, haha 😉 either way, it’s looks super cute and I would love to go one day!

I blooming love apples! I have to admit, I have never been apple picking as a tourist as I’m from the countryside…we’d always just pick apples from our, or our neighbours’ trees. It didn’t seem like an activity…it was just something you do when you want to eat apples (or make apple crumble or cider.)

Now I *don’t* live near apple trees I can totally see the appeal. Although I’m not sure i’d pay to have things lazered into the fruit!

p.s. what were the cake? Were they apple related too?

Haha and they taste soooo much better when picked! I’m not a huge fan of supermarket apples tbh, but picked right off the tree they’re delicious! Especially since they don’t have that wax covering yet…

That sounds so nice, though! I always wanted to have fruit/vegetables in my backyard. One day! We actually did go and pick apples at my friend’s parent’s house the week after (which is why we only picked a few in Altes Land haha) and it was so cool! Definitely not something I experienced living in the city.

Oh gosh I can’t remember what the cakes were! I think one was some sort of berry/sliced almond thing and the other was berry/fruit crumble. So I don’t think they were actually apple related at all haha!

I agree, apple picking is a wonderful fall activity! It looks like such a fun day and I love the idea of the fruit vending machine. And the laser writing on the apples is kinda funny but cool!

Yesss it’s the best! Yeah the I kinda wanted to do the laser thing, but since I would end up eating it anyway I figured it wasn’t really worth it haha. But yeah the fruit vending machine was so cute!

Whether by bike, bus, car or on foot, there are plenty of unique and scenic ways to explore the Altes Land region south of Hamburg.

Perhaps the most popular ways to discover Altes Land are by bike or on foot. In fact, the cycle touring network running throughout the entire Altes Land region encompasses around 1,000 kilometres. Over 100 kilometres of these paths follow the main and tributary dikes running through Altes Land, while the well-known Elbe Cycle Path and the North Sea Coast Cycle Path also lead through the region. All cycle routes are marked and offer plenty of options for different landscapes to explore. So, take your bike and ride through the region, by the old half-timbered houses, farm shops and cafés that dot the landscape or take a rest and sample some Altland specialties.

There are plenty of other routes through the Altes Land region as well. While many might prefer to cycle, these are also suitable for driving - especially if you plan to stock up on fruit while you’re there. Along these lines, if you are on the road a little longer during the flowering or harvest time, you might well choose the fruit route . This route leads in two sections over a length of 36 and 37 kilometres past the Elbe, numerous orchards, the Hanseatic city of Stade and the fairytale town of Buxtehude. You might also want to stop and take a closer look at the barrows that can be found along the forest route . The Elbe island route travels the Elbe island of Krautsand, offering some stunning views from the river.

For bikers who need a break, the Elbe Cycle Touring Bus runs between Harsefeld and the Natureum Niederelbe from the middle of April to the beginning of October, making plenty of stops along the way. You can easily take the bus just a few stops if you run out of breath on a long bike tour - just load your bike onto the trailer and continue at another point.

Altes Land is also a beautiful area to explore on foot. In addition to beautiful walks on the dykes along the Elbe, Lühe and Este rivers, the Jork fruit trail is something particularly special. Twelve display boards along a stretch of 1.5 kilometres of Westminnerweg in Jork provide interesting information about fruit growing from planting to harvest as you make your way through the orchards.
