Home at sea

Al Waab, a remarkable creation by Alia Yachts in collaboration with Vripack, has shattered expectations and set a new benchmark in the yachting industry. Despite its generous length of 55m, this Vripack-designed masterpiece just falls short of the 500 gross-tonne mark. This audacious departure from convention, coupled with Vripack’s holistic design approach, caught the discerning eye of the judges at Boat International’s prestigious Design and Innovation Awards.

Boat of the Week: Meet ‘Al Waab,’ the Elegant 180-Foot Superyacht Designed for the Whole Family

Al Waab is a new 180-ft. superyacht that is the longest in its class

“Al Waab” translates loosely from Arabic to English as a sanctuary or place to grow and protect things. Think large garden or enclosed field. Whether the owner of the recently launched Al Waab had that translation in mind is not clear. But the team that designed the 180-footer, built by Alia Yachts , says the owner had one mission—to accommodate a family, a big extended family and lots of friends.

“He said we want the ultimate home at sea,” says Bart M. Bouwhuis of Vripack, who led the design team. “We will not go exploring, he told us, but we want to enjoy our time on the water.” The owner, asking not to be named, also mandated the boat be 499 gross tons, an interior-volume sizing that’s just shy of the 500 mark, at which point any yacht must be built to larger, ship-like regulations.

“She’s the longest yacht in the world under 500 GT,” Gökhan Çelik, CEO of Alia Yachts, told Robb Report . “That’s one thing on paper but the real-world construction was quite a challenge.” The Turkish yard was able to complete the build, from the signed contract to delivery, in just 25 months. That’s unusually fast for any custom project, especially if you add Covid and supply-chain issues into the mix.

Sub-500-GT yachts are becoming increasingly popular as owners want to maximize interior space. But if the yacht is only 100 to 150 feet long, as many are, the result is often a bloated exterior that doesn’t look great and suffers in seaworthiness. Vripack decided to stretch the hull to 180 feet to give it a handsome, svelte profile, while maximizing the interior and exterior spaces.

“We actually had volume that we gave back to the owner because it required smaller engines and fuel tanks,” says Bouwhuis, noting there are six guest staterooms on the lower deck, and a master suite on the main deck. “We decided to approach the design holistically by combining the interior and exterior into a more flowing pattern.”

That meant big, sweeping windows and doors, multiple open decks, and even bamboo ceilings extending from the main salon out to the rear cockpit that serve as a bridge between inside and out. The Middle Eastern owner wanted a contemporary yacht with a modern sensibility, something that was forward-looking and not displaying his culture. “He didn’t want some sort of gallery, but a yacht that was calm and friendly,” says Bouwhuis.

The designers paid close attention to lighting the yacht. Notice the hundreds of tiny LED lights embedded into the rear panel for a starry-night effect.  Courtesy Pozitif Studio

The four-deck exterior has a conventional profile with straight lines, and much of the area is open. The oversized, enclosed swim platform at the transom cuts deep into the stern, with outer gunwales protecting the sides, so it’s much larger than a typical superyacht this size. It also connects nicely to the gym inside the beach club.

All exterior spaces, said Bouwhuis, have different layouts and functions, per the owner’s orders. “He just didn’t want a repeat of any of the decks below,” he says.

The swim platform has enough space for a large group sitting around a circle, and multiple chairs at the bar. On the unusually large sundeck is an outdoor galley, complete with ice-cream machine, and lounges overlooking the stern. On the deck below are groups of large sofas that connect to an indoor lounge. “The owner wanted people to be able to come and go,” says the designer. “The idea is to have multiple spaces where everyone can have their own little retreats.”

Seamless transitions between the interior and exterior were important to the owner, who wanted a home on the water.  Courtesy Pozitif Studio

Çelik says melding the interior and exterior, as Al Waab does, is becoming more common. “When you limit gross tonnage and relate that to the length, as we did with this yacht, you can create amazing use of spaces,” he says. “This combination of indoor and outdoor living is now very attractive to clients.”

The owner was also very specific on one feature that often gets overlooked: The lighting. Most renderings from other design firms showed the boat during daylight hours, dominated by sunlight filtering through the windows. Al Waab ’s owner wanted to know how Vripack would handle lighting the boat at night, when the family was living inside.

Bouwhuis says lighting is usually a standard exercise—“one-two-three you’re done”—but this suddenly required research into different forms of lighting, reflection points of different surfaces and how to employ lighting that is not obvious or ostentatious. “We had to play with the light to create warm glows, not spotlights,” he says. “We avoided high-gloss surfaces and instead used super-matte finishes.”

Combining details like the bamboo ceiling and open staircase kept the interior warm but contemporary.  Courtesy Pozitif Studio

That included the bamboo ceiling to provide a cozy, warm atmosphere, while diffusing the light at night. Embroidered leather is used in other sections, such as the wall behind the breakfast nook.

The design team even got flashy and subtle with a colorful acrylic wall that divides the main salon and stairway. The yard embedded hundreds of tiny LED lights into the panel, so it looks like sparkling stars at night, and but turned off during the day, it’s an artsy conversation piece.

In the end, the many components come together in what should be a showpiece launch for the shipyard—its second largest ever.

Each deck was designed for different uses. The huge swim platform at the bottom allows a large group to be near the water. The top skydeck has a full-featured outdoor galley and ice-cream machine.  Courtesy Pozitif Studio

”The owner was really delighted by the volume and sense of open space,” says Francesco Pitea, CEO at SF Yachts, the owner’s rep for the project. “The amount of outdoor space and diversity of the layout makes a big difference to his enjoyment of the yacht. It truly is a home at sea.”

The 180’ Al Waab is a Turkish Delight

Turkey’s alia yachts’ sleek mega yacht has some very impressive design elements, written by kevin koenig, april 4, 2022.

The Turkish  yacht  builder  Alia Yachts  recently delivered the 180-foot Al Waab to her satisfied owners. The yacht is remarkable for a number of reasons, most notably that it is, according to Alia, the longest steel-and-aluminum yacht in the world under the magic 500-gross-ton mark.

Five-hundred gross tons is the point at which a yacht changes flags and classifications, and becomes more expensive for the owner to operate due to necessary crew credentials and other costs. Keeping a mega yacht under that number in terms of gross tonnage is, in effect, a very big deal, even in an industry that specializes in big deals.

“We were able to hit this benchmark thanks to a few different factors,” says Gokhan Celik, president of Alia Yachts, “maybe most important was the boat’s narrow beam.” At 29-feet, 10-inches, the beam is much less wide than similarly long vessels, and that offers multiple advantages to Al Waab . Namely, the boat’s sleek footprint means she has less drag and requires smaller engines.

The Al Waab has twin 725-horsepower  Caterpillar  C18s. These are relatively small engines for a 180-footer and yet they more than hold their own, offering the full-displacement mega yacht a top speed of 14 knots. The pint-sized engines imbue the boat with some enticing qualities. For one, they have a smaller carbon footprint than larger engines, which is good for the environment and easier on the wallet. And secondly, smaller engines necessitate smaller engine rooms, which allow more interior space to be given to the yacht’s accommodations. The Alia can fit 12 guests in six staterooms, including a massive, split-level master suite on the upper deck that has an adjacent 13-foot pool.

The owner picked steel as the building material for the Al Waab ’s hull due to its strength and stability, and paired it with an aluminum superstructure that offers strength plus weight savings. That superstructure’s lines were penned by the renowned Dutch firm  Vripack . The designer’s expertise is evident in the yacht’s masculine lines that present the image of a seaworthy yet stylish vessel that will be as at ease in stormy weather as she is when docked in a placid and glamorous harbor. The yacht also has plenty of exterior entertainment spaces from which to view those chic locales. “My favorite feature on this particular boat is the big, open spaces, and also how well they interplay with the interior,” says Celik. “There is no abruptness, everything flows gracefully from one space to another.”

Celik also sees major advantages to building in Turkey. “We have lots of pedigree here,” he says. “In terms of artisanship, we are surrounded on three sides by water, so we have always lived with boats and boatbuilding. And in the past decade, the business side of boatbuilding has become more important in this country. People are hungry for it, so when you combine that ambition with a wealth of Turkish craftsmen, I really think it’s a winning combination.”

If Al Waab is any indication, Celik is most definitely on to something big.

Project Al Waab II superyacht project

55m Vripack-designed Al Waab delivered by Alia Yachts

The 55 metre superyacht Al Waab has been handed over to her owner following two years of construction at Antalya-based shipyard Alia Yachts .

Design and naval architecture come courtesy of Vripack , and the Dutch studio has condensed an impressive variety of internal and external space into an under-500 GT envelope. According to Alia Yachts, Al Waab is now the longest steel and aluminium-built superyacht below 500 GT.

“Yachts are getting longer and wider, but owners still want to stay below the 500GT mark,” says Alia Yachts president, Gökhan Çelik. “We’ve seen increasing interest in this kind of yacht and so to be one of the first with such an impressive project is an important milestone for Alia.”

The finished result offers an estimated 42% more exterior space than other comparable yachts in her size class, the shipyard said. The 499-GT yacht was given an appropriate name using the Arabic word waab, which loosely translates to "vast area that accommodates things."

A simple layout and a good amount of outdoor space were key to the owner’s brief, as was a “modern and fresh” design. Vripack has employed glass, diffused light, blonde wood surfaces and gold accents to fulfill the owner’s request for "comfort, space, luxury, privacy and stability at sea", according to the Turkish yard.

Onboard highlights include a four-metre dip pool on the foredeck and a generous beach club. Glass bulwarks line the decks to provide uninterrupted sea views and much of the onboard seating is facing outwards to ensure a continuous connection to the water.

Accommodation is offered for up to 12 guests in six cabins, including a split-level owner’s suite that offers wide-ranging views from the cabin on the upper deck, as well as twin unfolding balconies. A dressing room and bathroom are connected on the deck below.

Tender storage is cleverly concealed in the bow of the boat, offering easy access to a seven-metre tender and 3.5 metre RIB with the help of a 1000kg crane.

News of her delivery comes after Al Waab was launched in July last year. In spite of the pandemic, the motor yacht was only a few weeks behind schedule.

"The last two years have been difficult, but we took a lot of health and safety measures, and, to offset delays experienced by our European suppliers, we worked around the problem and found ways to recreate lost time," said Çelik.

Al Waab has a top speed of 12.5 knots and is powered by twin Caterpillar C18 diesel engines which, according to the shipyard, burn 35% less fuel than similar-sized yachts.

Al Waab scoops triple win at 2022 Boat International Design & Innovation Awards

Coming in just below the 500 gross-tonne mark, despite a generous length of 55m, Vripack-designed Al Waab by Alia Yachts challenges the norm and sets new standards. It’s this rule-breaking boldness and Vripack’s holistic design that caught the judges’ eye at Boat International’s coveted Design and Innovation Awards that took place this year in Milan on 22 June, culminating in a hat trick of awards.

Scooping ‘Outstanding Exterior Design, Motor Yachts 40m to 59.9m’, ‘Best Interior Design, Motor Yachts 499GT and Below’ and ‘Best Naval Architecture, Displacement Motor Yachts’, the judges singled Al Waab out for her holistic interior, exterior and naval architecture. It’s a design approach that Vripack has long championed and places Al Waab at the forefront of yacht design.

Al Waab: redefining yacht design one holistic step at a time

“Al Waab pulled ahead as a solid, smart design that’s slightly more efficient than its fellow nominees,” commented the judges. “Further tipping the balance in her favour was the holistic element of her naval architecture, exterior styling and interior arrangement.”

Commenting on the awards wins, Vripack’s co-creative director Bart M. Bouwhuis, says: “ Since 1961, Vripack’s design ethos has been underpinned by our holistic vision. Creating world-class interior and exterior designs that are conceived with expert naval architecture in mind not only delivers a yacht that comprehensively answers an owner’s brief, but one that gains worldwide industry recognition too .”

Living on the water

For many owners, the concept of enjoying a ‘home at sea’ is what drives their passion for yachting. But when industry standards and regulatory constraints come into play that simple vision is often lost. Not so for the owner of Vripack’s new 55m yacht, whose desire to use his boat as a family apartment became the founding principle of the entire design. Underpinned by the Dutch studio’s engineering expertise and inexhaustive creativity, the result is the very essence of living on the water.

Renowned for a holistic approach to design, the interior, exterior, naval architecture, and engineering all derive from Vripack’s design boards. Virtual reality was used to fine-tune the turnkey solution, enhancing the owner’s understanding of space planning, sightlines, and layout all from the comfort of his home in the Middle East.

“The virtual reality was a big surprise to the owner, and he loved it because it made it so easy to understand the space and its interaction with the outdoors – far more so than renderings and sketches. Ultimately that resulted in the entire design working in such a way that it exceeded his expectations.”

BART M. BOUWHUIS – CO-CREATIVE DIRECTOR

DESIGNED FOR EASY, RESTFUL, FAMILY LIVING

The amount of space and the flow of the layout were crucial to the owner’s enjoyment of his yacht. The yacht can sleep up to 12 guests in six staterooms – rare on a 499GT yacht – including a lavish split-level master suite on the upper deck with a private 4-metre pool on the foredeck.

A sprawling beach club in the stern is another highlight. Moreover, by placing the tender bay in a sunken deck in the bow the tenders are easily accessible yet hidden from view. The grated ‘tween deck arrangement provides storage for two tenders, a pair of jet skis and other water toys, but because it is not an enclosed space is not included in the yacht’s overall volume.

Design emphasis has been put on the yacht’s vast exterior areas and structural elements have been kept to a minimum to allow unobstructed views of the sea. The intimate family areas, including a drop-down bulwark in the cosy dining area, are paired with an almost endless owner’s aft deck.

SEAMLESS FLOW BETWEEN INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR SPACES

The clean and modem exterior is matched by the contemporary yet evergreen interior design. The owner wanted to avoid bright direct light, hence the diffused lighting   throughout the vessel with soft, muted beams. Matt-finished bamboo slats on the ceiling helps to absorb the natural sunlight flooding through the large floor-to-ceiling windows by day. A key feature is the gold, illuminated wall installation with integrated crystals in the stairwell that covers all three decks. Glass is also a central element in the design. The result is uninterrupted sight lines and a seamless flow between interior and exterior spaces. Glass bulwarks on all decks provide uninterrupted outboard views and large outdoor areas for guests to enjoy the vistas in a private and comfortable setting.

COMFORT AT SEA

Due to her main dimensions, the comfort rating has been increased by 40% compared to other 500GT vessels, ensuring excellent seaworthiness and comfort at sea while greatly reducing seasickness incidence. In addition, the elongated hull design has a Bahama draft of 2,1 meter allowing her to travel safely in shallow waters. The efficient lines plan of the optimized hull uses around 35% less fuel than other 500GT vessels at the same speeds, increasing her range with the same amount.

OPEN-PLAN INTERIOR DESIGN

Geometric lines shape the open-plan interior and the minimum of fixed furniture contributes to the homey atmosphere. An exposed floating staircase featuring a semi-transparent art installation ascends all the way to the sun deck. The owner’s suite benefits from a split-level bathroom, open-plan stairs, and a private 4m pool on the foredeck. The entire design is pulled together by the sprawling beach club with a direct connection to the water to heighten the onboard experience.

Alia Yachts Launches “Al Waab II”

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: August 19, 2021

180-foot Alia Superyacht

Alia Yachts in Turkey has launched the 180-foot Al Waab II , which is being heralded as the longest steel and aluminum yacht below 500 gross tons in the world.

“Yachts are getting longer and wider, but owners still want to stay below the 500-gross-ton mark,” Alia President Gökhan Çelik stated in a press release. “We’ve seen increasing interest in this kind of yacht, and so to be one of the first with such an impressive project is an important milestone for Alia.”

Al Waab II is the first superyacht to be launched from a new 2,000-ton lift that’s part of an investment the Antalya Free Zone made into yacht-building infrastructure. Other improvements include new hangars for superyacht construction and refit projects in the region.

The Al Waab II build was completed in about two years, including delays because of Covid-19. Notable design features include a split-level master stateroom on the upper deck, in addition to other staterooms for a total of 12 guests.

SF Yachts in Dubai served as the owner’s representative on the project.

What’s next for Al Waab II ? After sea trials are completed, the yacht will be delivered to her owner, followed by a world debut in September.
