Excellent performance

FAREAST 28R racing keelboat combines the experiences and accumulated techniques of European Design Office Simonis Voogd and Far East Boats. It is a well-designed, easy to handle and high performance uniform class racing sailboat. Even with a length of 28 feet, FAREAST 28R can easily reach the maximum speed of 20 knots. With its high speed, fun and high performance with low cost features, FAREAST 28R has received approval and recommendations both home and abroad.

FAREAST 28R is intentionally designed to fit the wide demands of sailboat enthusiasts. FAREAST 28R’s hull is adapted from new fiberglass reinforced composite material, using foam sandwich structure and resin vacuum technology which ensure a light and rigid hull. With displacement of only 1200 kg and lifted keel, the FAREAST 28R is fit for various regattas.

High end accessories

FAREAST 28R is equipped with high quality mainsail, foresail, spinnaker, deck accessories and riggings of famous brands, such as Selden aluminum alloy masts from Sweden, Harken’s high-tech winch and blocks with no frictions from America, and Northsail’s polyester film sails from America, ensuring high performance.

far east 28 yacht

Excitement guaranteed with this box ticking fun and fast to sail Simonis Voogd design. Over 650 Fareast 28R's sold Worldwide, with 15 in Aus and 2 in NZ there is always some to race against at our major regatta's. Join the excitement of fast and uncomplicated sailing today!

Unbeatable price and low running cost:

The Fareast 28R offers great value for money with its base price of $84,500. No more antifouling, high repair bills, another expensive sail or high mooring fees. You can save thousands a year compared to running a bigger yacht.

Performance:

Sailing fast is fun! The 28R is a proven race winner and has beaten many bigger boats over the line: Melges 32, J-111, J-120, Beneteau 44.5, Archambault 40, Sydney 38, Pogo 12.5, MC-31, Thompson 980 and Farr 30 are just a few to mention. The 28R is not purely designed for one design racing, she also performs very well under ORC and IRC handicap, so you don't have to wait for large fields to appear in your area to have some good fun.

Easy to sail, handle and manage:

The FAREAST 28R has a clean, straight forward and functional deck layout. This enables the crew to concentrate on pure racing and sailing fast. The 28R offers very good control with the deep spade rudder. Hull form stability is high and the high performance keel with a lead torpedo at the end of a carbon fin, offers the best possible righting moment. The very large cockpit makes it easy for the crew to handle the boat. For racing a crew of 4- 5 is ideal, however the simplicity of the 28R makes it possible to go out for a fun spin or twilight with as little as 3, even setting the kite in a stiff breeze won't be a problem.

ISAF approved One Design Class:

The Fareast 28R is an ISAF approved One-Design class and numbers are growing fast, over 650 boats have been sold. We are building a class in Australia and New Zealand, Nationals are held every year and you will always find other 28's to race against at major events.

International Regattas

World Cups are organized yearly, Sweden hosted the first Worlds in 2017. The 2022 Worlds will be held in Kiel, Germany. Further international Fareast OD racing options are the yearly China Cup in Shenzen and many other Fareast regattas in Asia and Europe.

Easy Trailable and simple lifting:

The keel is fully retractable and the boat sits really low on the custom-made trailer, reassuring a safe and comfortable drive to your favorite (tropical) events. The boat is ramp launchable and the mast deck stepped, making you independent from expensive marinas. The 28R is also an ideal boat for hardstand storage, it has a single lifting point on the keel fin and the bulb takes up the boat in the hoist, avoiding manually keel lifting.

Construction and hardware:

Fareast invested heavily in CNC machines, everything from plugs, aluminum Moulds to foam core sheets and woven glass are cut on high tech milling machines, routers, laser and water jet cutters. A huge 5 axis milling machine is used to manufacture hull and deck Moulds and also for milling and drilling deck hardware patterns. These modern production methods result in extreme high accuracy, further quality improvement and reduction of labor cost.

All Fareast yachts are now constructed using high quality Vinylester. Resin is pre weight and vacuum infused into a foam sandwich layup, this advanced building technique guarantees a rigid, light and very stiff construction. All additional parts are also vacuum infused, like the one-piece inner structure "the spine" which takes up forces from the keel and rigging. Every Fareast 28R is equipped with the best hardware available from Harken, Spinlock and Selden rigging. No compromises are made when it comes to quality.

Multiple ownership?

It might not be everybody's cup of tea, nevertheless about half the 28R's we sell are owned by more than one owner. It not only cuts the cost in half but you straight away have 2 or more motivated crew members.

Australian Sailing Magazine tested the 28R, test reports can be found under specifications. A video review from Yachting World and Boating NZ can be found under video & reviews.

Far East Boats

FarEast 28R

Racing at its best, 500 boats sold worldwide and the class is now growing in the UK, with two more boats sold since the beginning of 2019. The FarEast28R is HP30 compliant and extremely quick. It has the potential to win the HP30 Class as demonstrated in 2022 at the HP30 Class nationals. This is uncomplicated, cost effective, high performance racing.

Performance: The Fareast 28R is a proven race winner and has beaten many bigger boats over the line in races throughout the world: Farr30s, Melges 32s, J-111s, J-120s, Beneteau 44.5s, Archambault 40s, Sydney 38s and MC-31s, are just a few (please contact us for race records).

The 28R is not purely designed for one design racing, she performs very well under handicap and sits comfortably within the parameters of the HP30 Class, so you don't have to wait for large fleets of boats to appear, in your area, before you can enjoy some great racing.

Easy to sail, handle and manage: The FAREAST 28R is easy to sail fast due to the low wetted surface which hardly changes shape nor surface when the boat starts to heel. It offers very good control with the deep spade rudder and the high form stability of the hull. Deck layout is clean and straight forward, the very large cockpit makes it easy for the crew to handle the boat. For racing a crew of 4- 5 is ideal, however the simplicity of the 28R makes it possible to go out for a fun spin or twilight with as little as 3, even setting the kite in a stiff breeze won't be a problem.

ISAF approved One Design Class: The Fareast 28R is an ISAF approved One-Design class and numbers are growing fast, 400 boats have been sold. We are also concentrating efforts to build the class in the UK.

Easy Trailability and simple lifting:

The keel is fully retractable and the boat sits nice and low on the custom made trailer, reassuring a comfortable and safe drive to events. The boat is ramp launchable and the mast deck stepped. The 28R is also an ideal boat for dry-sailing, as it has a single lifting point on the keel fin and the bulb takes up the boat in the hoist, reducing the workload of removing the keel-fin from the boat.

Construction and hardware: Fareast has invested heavily in CNC machines, everything from moulds and plugs to foam and glass are now cut on high tech milling machines, routers, laser and water jet cutters. A huge 5 axis milling machine is used for manufacturing hull and deck moulds but also for milling and drilling deck hardware patterns. These modern production methods result in extreme high accuracy, further quality improvement and reduction of labour cost.

The Fareast 28R is constructed using a ISO polyester - foam core sandwich, resin is pre weight and vacuum infused. This advanced building technique guarantees a rigid, light and stiff construction. The one piece infused inner structure "the spine" takes up all the forces from the keel and rigging.

The Fareast 28R is very well equipped with the best hardware available from Harken, Spinlock and Selden for the rigging. No compromises have been made when it comes to quality.

Unbeatable price, low running cost: The Fareast 28R offers great value for money. No more antifouling, high repair bills or expensive sails and high mooring fees. Literally owners can save thousands per year on campaign costs, compared to running bigger yachts, but with no less associated fun.

Multiple ownership? Maybe not everybody's cup of tea but about half the 28R's we sell are owned by more than one owner. It not only cuts the cost in half but you straight away have 2 or more motivated crew members.

Tests: Yacht World tested the 28R and the test report can be found below under specifications. A test video from Yachting World can also be found under video & reviews.

Fareast 28R: Review

With more than 100 sold, this sub-$100k asian-built day racer is keen to transform the club scene.

The Aussie-made club sportsyacht has long gone, but for sailors yearning for something fast and of more current design there are now some great products coming from China.

One of the most affordable of these is the appropriately named Fareast 28R. This is a stylish sports sailing yacht that is not only good on price but ticks the box on the latest performance styling such as rear-sloping razor-sharp bow and wide, low slung hull with minimal cabin structure.

The design hails from one of Holland's leading naval architect firms (Simonis-Voogd) and is bang up to date in delivering fast sailing potential with just a crew of four. We found it does exactly that when we test-sailed the first model to be delivered to Sydney Harbour.

PRICE AND EQUIPMENT - Great value for about $85k race ready and also trailerable The Fareast 28R is sold without sails but these you can buy sails from the sail maker of your choice.

A set of UK sails (made in Brisbane) is $8950 for a panel set made of ZZ black Technora from Contender Cloth, party transparent or completely black.

The price of the yacht at time of testing was $69,500 plus an extra $1500 for delivery and set up cost. There would be perhaps another $5000 in for extras like the outboard, racing electronics and necessary safety gear.

An interesting feature of the Fareast is it comes with a transport cradle that can be used by owners as a yard trolley. This would be very handy if the yacht was dry stored in a boatyard near the water. With the keel raised you could keep the craft out of the water but ready to be launched very quickly.

Alternatively you could keep the boat on a road trailer. A Queensland -made Oceanic trailer allows the boat to be road-transported with sufficient ground-clearance for safe highway driving. The whole tow package is under 2000kg (boat 1360kg trailer 450kg), so you could tow the Far East 28R to different locations and keep her at home.

The yacht is just only 25cm over the Australian road width but you can still tow using state-approved wide-load requirements like oversize signs and flag. There's also an optional winch keel lift system if you need to lift the almost 600kg keel.

DECKS AND LAYOUT - Lots of deck space and Harken deck gear Providing plenty of room to actually work the boat is a key feature of modern era sportsboats and, to this end, the Fareast 28R doesn't disappoint.

She has a huge cockpit space with plenty of room for her intended crew of four, or five to move across the boat easily during a tack. The wider hull means more room aft for the helmsman and the open transom means any water coming aboard quickly goes out the 'back-door'.

The helm has neat rope controls either side including adjustable backstay, 4:1 adjustable mainsheet traveller and mainsheet fine-tune control. The mainsheet runs a 4:1 tackle and with the extra 4:1 of the fine-tune you have effectively 16:1 of power when you need it such as in strong winds.

The for'ard cockpit has a narrower work area with Harken sheet winches either side for trimming the jib and a low cabin structure with large hatchway slight off-set from centre, so it's possible to raise the keel when the craft is being trailed, or lifted from the water.

There are another two Harken winches  on the cabin for halyards plus a nest of Spinlock rope cams for the halyards. Controls for pulling the spinnaker pole out and the tack line for the spinnaker are also found hereabouts.

A specially designed sail bag fits into the open companionway so you can set and drop the spinnaker easily during racing. This is standard practice in many sportsboats but it's great to see this included as a standard.

The yacht comes standard with life rails and bow/stern pushpit rails, so it's a pretty crew-friendly, especially in a racing situation where you need crew sitting outboard for extra power upwind.

The cockpit has moulded foot chocks for both the helmsman and jib trimmers and there are non-skid strips as well as canvas rope-tidy bags as well.

Harken blocks and tracks are all standard and there is a timber outboard mount bracket on the transom to take a small outboard of 3.5hp-6hp. The motor would probably be taken off and stored below in more serious racing sessions.

The Raymarine Race Master, by the way,  gives speed and compass heading that are easily viewed from the helm position. There is also a boom vang strut that will hold the boom up when you are dropping the mainsail.

Whilst the cabin doesn't have any bunks it's possible to fit bunks into the boat if you wanted some overnight accommodation.

CONSTRUCTION - Built to international standards The construction of the Fareast is to internationally recognised CE standard with high-density foam sandwich in fibreglass skins. The fibreglass resin is pre-weighed and vacuum-infused. Keel fin and rudder are made off Carbon, infused in an alloy mould. The hull is further reinforced by a series of internal ring-frames.

As regards deck hardware — it's all top quality brands. The alloy spars are a practical solution to keeping costs down and the Selden mast is deck-stepped and therefore makes the craft more suitable for trailer-sailing than is often the case with sportsboats.

The twin-spreader rig has swept-stays anchored to the outside gunwale so it delivers good rig support and will be pretty suitable for our tough Aussie summer sailing.

ON THE WATER - Slippery in light airs with a well-balanced helm In a light north east breeze of 3-8 knots, our Fareast 28R moved easily and quickly, doing six knots upwind once we got the sail trim sorted.

Some wave action created by passing ferries didn't make it easy to hold consistent speed, but the Far East 28R did very well to keep on the move in these testing conditions.

After sailing down into the main harbour, we set the standard 80sq metre asymmetrical spinnaker from its retractable bow pole to sail back upstream in a series of fast reaches. In this mode we eventually had the speed up to 8 -9 knots as the sea breeze freshened and the water became a bit calmer.

The immediate impression is that the Fareast is fun to sail, especially in fresh breeze days when there is good opportunity to plane downwind. Unlike quite a few sportsboats the transom hung rudder feels light to steer and not at all heavy.

It does require a bit of concentration from the helmsman to get the best speed in light airs but generally I would deem this craft well-behaved and certainly well balanced.

It helps, of course to move the crew weight around for the best trim for the conditions and in light airs crew forward and a bit to leeward helped our speed immeasurably.

Best of all from the sailing test was coming back under spinnaker and feeling the speed building and our mast-mounted Race Master  Instrument showing speed ticking up to 9.5 knots at one stage.

VERDICT - The world's largest ISAF-approved builder This latest sportsyacht from China is not just about low price but also high build quality.

The Fareast yard was founded in 2002 and is the world's largest ISAF-approved builder of junior Optimist and 420 class sailing dinghies. They also now build a range of small yachts and have obviously taken the same care and attention to detail from the small craft over to the bigger sail craft.

Fareast is very much a home-grown Chinese company and it's probably a good omen for the future that this company is a big supplier of craft in China as well as overseas markets like Europe, USA and Australia.

Only by having a strong home-grown sailing scene can China really move ahead in this sport and ultimately produce good fast yachts and sailors who can sail them.

I might mention there has been 100 of this model sold so far in 10 months and it's already been established as a one-design class in China and Europe.

If enough boats are sold here, the Fareast 28R could become a one-design racing class in Australia as well.

LIKES >> Cutting-edge styling and top build quality >> Easily raced with a crew of 4 >> Suitable for dry-storing or trailer-sailing

NOT SO MUCH >> Lack of berths and cabin floor >> Lack of navigation lights as standard >> Lack of adjustable car-leads on jib

Far east 28R: a fast, fun one-design in a lightweight, affordable package

Far east 28R

One-designs can provide fun, fair racing, as epitomised by the Volvo Ocean Race fleet currently sliding round the planet. But modern one-designs tend to come with off-putting prices, particularly if the sail inventories are not capped.

This new Far east 28R has been conceived as a fast, fun one-design in a lightweight, affordable package. A displacement of just 1,200kg and a lifting keel allows her to be towed to events.

A straightforward, easy to rig one-design

A straightforward, easy to rig one-design

Fareast is launching this 28R with a bang: the first 16 boats competed in the China Cup last year. The company sees “an increasing market for sailing schools, event centres, sailing leagues, etc,” says export manager Ellen Jiao Lee, for “those looking for a boat that is easy to handle and maintain, and carries a modern sailplan.”

Fareast’s crimson-coloured 31R was the eye-catching boat at the Düsseldorf boat show in January 2014. It was a clever ploy designed to highlight a new direction for this Chinese yard, which was founded in 2002. Fareast is the biggest producer of Optimists in the world and has a rapidly expanding yacht production line, drawn by Netherlands-based Simonis Voogd.

The hulls, rudders and keel fins are all built in epoxy, and the keel bulbs in lead. In short, this looks like a modern, versatile, easy-to-rig one-design racer or daysailer that seems simpler and certainly cheaper than the competition.

In Russia’s Far East, a New Face of Resistance to Putin’s Reign

As the protests swell in the city of Khabarovsk, 4,000 miles from Moscow, residents who had never before found a public outlet for anger are becoming activists.

far east 28 yacht

By Anton Troianovski

KHABAROVSK, Russia — Valentin Kvashnikov, a construction worker and recovering heroin addict, lives near the railway depot in a wooden shack, with a plastic trash can in the corner that serves as his toilet.

But he has risen from obscurity into a celebrity in far eastern Russia by helping to energize the antigovernment demonstrations that have gotten bigger and bolder in the past three weeks.

“It’s him!” a passing woman, Natasha Gordiyenko, said after she spotted Mr. Kvashnikov outside his house on Sunday, before unleashing a tirade of profanity against Russian officialdom.

The protests in Khabarovsk reached well into the tens of thousands over the weekend, establishing this distant city — some 4,000 miles from Moscow — as the site of the biggest popular challenge to President Vladimir V. Putin’s authority that a city in Russia’s far-flung regions has produced in his 20 years in power.

The protests have no leader and few concrete demands. But they have electrified a quiet city half a world away from the capital, turning apolitical residents into activists overnight and showing how quickly the embers of discontent over corruption, poverty and the stranglehold of Mr. Putin’s rule can ignite a conflagration.

“It’s not that there is something wrong with us,” said Elena Okhrimenko, a retired accountant, who has been protesting with homemade signs along with her husband, a retired truck driver. “We realized that there is something wrong with the country.”

The involvement of protesters from a broad cross-section of the city, an eight-hour flight from Moscow and only 15 miles from China, is a new kind of warning for the Kremlin. For years, large-scale protests have mainly been limited to Moscow and St. Petersburg, making them easy to dismiss as the work of an out-of-touch urban elite.

Yet the well of popular anger so far from the capital undercuts the Kremlin’s narrative of Mr. Putin’s Russia, which he has essentially ruled for the past two decades.

Mr. Putin won a heavily orchestrated referendum less than a month ago that rewrote the Constitution to allow him to stay in office until 2036. But many analysts have called the vote fraudulent, and while pollsters have identified rising discontent among Russians in recent years, the anger has never spilled into the streets with such force outside the nation’s biggest cities.

“For now, society doesn’t appear to be so radicalized as to storm the gates, if you will,” said Tatiana Stanovaya, a nonresident scholar at the Carnegie Moscow Center, a research organization focused on politics and policy. “But from my point of view, that is only a question of time if the authorities are not able to see what is really happening in the country.”

Mr. Kvashnikov, long struggling with poverty and grousing at the state’s injustice, turned into a bullhorn-carrying cheerleader of protesters who have marched through the city each day since July 11 in defense of their popular governor, Sergei I. Furgal, who was arrested by the federal authorities this month.

The protesters gather in Lenin Square in front of the marble-sheathed hulk of the regional government headquarters — known locally as the White House — before spilling into the road for a three-mile loop above the sprawling Amur River.

Cars honk in support, drivers offer high-fives and marveling bystanders — the ice-cream vendor, the cosmetics shop security guard, the officer in front of the railway-company building — have their phones out to record the scene.

“I never believed our people were so united,” Mr. Kvashnikov said, describing the protests.

The protests have drawn their ranks from political novices like Elena Skorodumova, a 23-year-old kindergarten teacher’s assistant. On July 9, she was scrolling through a social media page devoted to local news and pets when she saw a post about the arrest of Mr. Furgal, the governor. In a sharp blue suit, Mr. Furgal was pictured being led away by a masked Federal Security Service officer in camouflage gear, a gloved hand pressing down on the governor’s head.

Ms. Skorodumova recalls that she got goose bumps from her anger. The “only way” to support the governor, she wrote in the comments, was to “go out in the streets.”

The arrest of the governor, on suspicion of having organized murders some 15 years ago, seemed to many residents a blatant power play by the Kremlin to get rid of a regional leader seen as insufficiently loyal.

Mr. Furgal, a former scrap metal trader, defeated the incumbent, a widely disliked ally of Mr. Putin’s, in the 2018 regional election. Then Mr. Furgal won over residents with a populist style that his staff assiduously documented on Instagram .

Officially dismissed by Mr. Putin last week, Mr. Furgal had highlighted how he set aside millions of dollars for school lunches, cut his own pay and put the governor’s yacht on the market.

More calls for protest over his arrest coursed through social media, often in the coded language of invitations for a stroll or “feeding the pigeons” in the central square.

On July 11, a Saturday, Ms. Skorodumova, the teacher’s assistant, packed sanitizing wipes and a toothbrush in case she got arrested and went to Lenin Square. She had never protested before.

Tens of thousands of her fellow residents also came. And they keep coming back.

Mr. Kvashnikov, the construction worker, found a wellspring of people who shared his disdain for Mr. Putin and what he sees as a system that enriches the few. He has scarcely enough money to eat, he said, and had been involved in criminal groups and done time in prison in an earlier life.

“You rabid dog, why don’t you deal with what is under your own nose?” he said of Mr. Putin. “Your people are hungry. Look at how your people live.”

Mr. Kvashnikov drew the attention of the many YouTubers livestreaming the protests by his almost daily attendance, his loud chants and his readiness to defy the police. In one widely viewed video , he can be seen shouting at a police officer that the Russian Constitution guarantees freedom of assembly. The crowd next to him starts chanting “We’re the ones in charge here!”

The crowds of demonstrators have grown for three consecutive Saturdays, with some estimates putting last weekend’s crowd at more than 50,000 — a spurt of spontaneous political activism that is rare in Russia.

Alyona Panteleyeva, 22, and her mother run a cramped sewing workshop and fabric store. She said she had never been involved in politics until one of her employees suggested producing face masks that say “I Am/We Are Furgal.”

For the past week, the workshop has been producing about 50 masks a day, and Ms. Panteleyeva said she was selling them at cost over Instagram and in her store. The first person who bought one, she said, paid in cash marked with a pro-Furgal slogan; such bills are increasingly in circulation in the city, she explained.

“I am sure that the protests will continue until the citizens get what they want,” including a public trial for Mr. Furgal in Khabarovsk, rather than in Moscow, she said. “We are fighting for the truth.”

Mr. Furgal’s popularity as a regional elected official is unique, so the Khabarovsk protests are not likely to be replicated elsewhere, the social scientist Sergei Belanovsky wrote recently . But they show an increased willingness to protest in response to any number of slights.

“Given the overall unfavorable economic and social situation, the reasons to protest keep growing in number,” Mr. Belanovsky said. “The fabric of the state has thinned, and to tear it requires less and less effort.”

Mr. Putin remains in control of the country’s powerful security services, and, though in decline, his approval rating stands at 60 percent . A major question is to what extent the Kremlin will be prepared to use force to put down protests — it has done so in Moscow but not yet in Khabarovsk. At one point on Monday, a sole police officer followed the column of roughly 1,000 protesters, apparently to keep the cars at bay.

Many protesters assume that some police officers sympathize with them. Analysts also say that the Kremlin seems to be hoping the protests will fade on their own, and the state media has largely ignored them. Meanwhile, the authorities seem to be putting pressure on some activists.

Late Sunday evening in Lenin Square, videos showed Mr. Kvashnikov haranguing a man in plainclothes who he said had threatened him, then being wrestled to the ground by other people in plainclothes; he was carried by his ankles, chest and elbows to a waiting police car.

Hours later, the authorities released Mr. Kvashnikov. Waiting video bloggers were there to record his walk from the police station. Mr. Kvashnikov had already let his fans know that he was taking a break from protesting, for his family’s safety.

“Don’t be afraid and keep at it, friends,” Mr. Kvashnikov said in a video message recorded on Sunday. “Most important, don’t abandon what we started together.”

Ukraine war latest: Putin arrives in North Korea; Russian forces 'move closer to key supply route'

Vladimir Putin has arrived in North Korea for a two-day visit - his first in more than two decades. Elsewhere, the UK's Ministry of Defence says Russian forces are moving closer to a key Ukrainian supply route in the eastern Donetsk region.

That's all of our live coverage on the conflict for now.

We'll bring you any major developments overnight, and we'll be back with our regular updates in the morning.

More details about Vladimir Putin's arrival in North Korea have started coming through...

The Russian president arrived in the country for the first time in 24 years earlier this evening, and was greeted by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The two men had a brief conversation and then left Pyongyang Airport in the same car.

Now, Korean Central News Agency has reported that the pair shared their "pent up inmost thoughts" with each other and "opened their minds".

The North Korean state news organisation said the conversation was "friendly" and came as their relationship "entered a course of new comprehensive development".

It added that Putin's visit was important in "powerfully propelling the cause of building a powerful country".

Of course, the Korean Central News Agency's original reporting is in Korean, so there may be some discrepancies in the translation.

The destruction of Russian targets in border regions "really matters", Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said as he praised world leaders for their determination to protect Ukraine,

Delivering his nightly address, the Ukrainian president said: "The destruction of Russian terrorists' positions and launchers by our forces, our warriors, near the border really matters.

"We witness the world's determination opening new prospects for restoring our security. Among other things, this includes the security of Kharkiv."

His comments come after Ukraine claimed responsibility for an overnight drone attack on a Russian oil facility.

The strike caused a massive blaze in Russia's Rostov region and marked the latest long-range attack by Kyiv's forces on a border region.

Ukraine has in recent months stepped up aerial assaults on Russian soil, targeting refineries and oil terminals, in an effort to slow down the Kremlin's war effort.

At the same time, Moscow's army has been pressing hard along the front line in eastern Ukraine, where a shortage of troops and ammunition has made defenders vulnerable.

As we have been reporting this evening, Vladimir Putin has arrived in North Korea for the first time in 24 years to begin a two-day visit.

The Russian president was greeted by North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, with the men seen laughing and hugging as they had a conversation near Putin's plane.

A red carpet was rolled out for his arrival as well.

The US has said it is concerned about the "deepening" cooperation between Russia and the North Korea.

The Pentagon voiced concern about the growing ties between Moscow and Pyongyang as Vladimir Putin arrived in North Korea for his first visit in 24 years.

"The deepening cooperation between Russia and the DPRK is something that should be of concern, especially to anyone that's interested in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula," Major General Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesperson, told reporters.

DPRK is an abbreviation for North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

We have just received the first photos of Vladimir Putin arriving in North Korea.

The Russian president was greeted by the country's leader Kim Jong Un as he left his plane.

The pair hugged and had a brief conversation before leaving in the same car.

We are starting to get more details about Vladimir Putin's arrival in North Korea.

As the Russian president touched down, he was greeted by the country's leader Kim Jong Un.

The two men had a brief conversation next to Putin's motorcade, before leaving Pyongyang Airport in the same car.

As we told you in our last post, Vladimir Putin has arrived in North Korea for his first visit in 24 years.

The Russian president's plane touched down in Pyongyang around 2.45am local time (6.45pm UK time) after a stopover in Russia's far east.

He was reportedly greeted by North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un.

Here's a quick look at what is expected to take place during his two-day visit...

One of the first events to take place will be one-on-one discussions between the two leaders.

There will also be a gala concert, state reception, honour guards, document signings, and a statement to the media, Russia's Interfax news agency quoted Mr Putin's aide as saying.

A number of Russian officials have travelled to Pyongyang as well as part of Mr Putin's delegation, including defence minister Andrei Belousov, foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and deputy prime minister Alexander Novak.

Ahead of the visit, North Korea appeared to make preparations for a possible military parade in downtown Pyongyang.

Vladimir Putin has arrived in North Korea, the Kremlin has confirmed.

The Russian president touched down in the country's capital, Pyongyang, where he will begin his two-day visit.

He was greeted at the airport by North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, according to RIA Novosti.

A formal meeting between the two leaders is expected to take place tomorrow.

In a presidential order issued yesterday, Putin said Moscow was looking to sign a "comprehensive strategic partnership treaty" with North Korea.

The international community has raised alarm bells regarding his trip, with NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg saying the military alliance was concerned about the support Russia could provide for North Korea's missile and nuclear programmes.

Three Russian government aircraft have landed in Pyongyang in North Korea, according to flight tracking data.

It is unclear if Vladimir Putin is on board any of the planes, but their arrival comes as the Russian president is expected to visit the country.

Flight Radar 24 shows the planes travelled from Yakutsk in east Siberia, where Putin travelled to earlier today.
