Hylas 54 review: new evolution.
Although an exceptional charter boat, the Hylas 54 really lead Hylas away from chartering. The 54 was introduced while CYC was winding down from her heydays of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. According to Queen Long, the first Hylas 54 Standard Deck (H54-#01) was delivered on Nov. 3, 1997. This hull is the infamous Heart Song III who wrote a nice review of the 54 . The boat has circumnavigated twice. The first Hylas 54 Raised Saloon Deck (H54RS-#06) was delivered on Feb. 23, 1999. In 2000, the founder of Hylas Yachts USA, sold CYC to VIP Charters moving to focus on new builds of the 46, 49, and 54 Hylas models. The 54 is currently in production with a longer wait time of 2 to 3 years. The design has also been stretched to 56-feet in 2010. John has a review of the 54 Hylas Raised Saloon version . First Impressions First impressions dictate that this is a serious blue water cruising boat but also perfect for coastal cruising. From afar, purists will prefer the standard version to the RS. The standard version has a more traditional sailboat appearance while the RS has the popular motor yacht style with the aggressive doghouse and sleek windows. The raised saloon version outsells the standard three to one. The design is classic German Frers with a powerful raked bow, flattish bottom, and swim platform aft. She comes in a centerboard version of 6’/10′ draft and a fixed keel of 7’2″. Two portlights are amidships and one aft on each side.
Construction Hylas has made Twaron, a Kevlar like carbon aramid fiber, standard on the 54. This fiber makes the hulls bulletproof. The hull is Twaron with alternating fiberglass lay up hand laid with no core and using vinylester resins and Isophthalic gel coat. Owners tell stories of the tremendous strength of this material. One owner hit a rock with her keel without any hull damage. The collision was so hard it broke the motor mounts. Another owner hit a rock against the hull itself. The rock actually broke through, and water was rushing in. The owner motored to the nearest marina and had to wait in a slip until they could get the travel lift going. All the while the bilge pump was running, maintaining the water level. With a fiberglass boat, she would have sunk.
Queen Long uses external lead ballast of 20,020 lbs mounted onto a stub. The hull deck joint is the common inner flange glued down with 5200, fasted to the toerail through 6″ centers with aircraft locking bolts, and tabbed together from below. The tanks are stainless steel with 3 for water, 2 for fuel, and 2 holding tank one for each head. The main tankage is under the saloon with more capacity 555 versus 455 on the RS version. The seacocks are bronze, bedded. These are the standard procedures for Queen Long, arguably the highest quality shipyard in Taiwan.
What To Look For Early Hylas 54’s had a partial skeg rudder that was flawed. There were reports of a number of rudder failures. Most notably in 2005, two 54’s had large portions of the bottom of their rudders break away during the Caribbean 1500 rally. The failures were because the partial skeg was too short and the bottom third of the foam rudder below the skeg was engineered to break-off in case of grounding. Even so with only 40% of a rudder, one of the 54’s went on to surprisingly finish second in the race. On post-2005 model 54’s, Queen Long increased the rudder to full skeg. You might ask about the rudder on early model 54’s.
On Deck At the bow are double anchors, a very large sail locker and anchor rode locker. With the bow chock included, the 54 is actually near 56-feet overall. This rule follows the same for all Hylas yachts because the manufacturer length is based LOD and does not include the bow chock. The anchor locker is a watertight collision bulkhead forward with independent overboard drainage. The divided locker has separate storage for fenders and docklines. A watertight stern section is behind the dual aft lazarettes port starboard with with dual Bailey latches for watertight seal. The teak swim platform has a stern garage with a dedicated bilge pump with manual over ride in cockpit. The deck’s molded contrasting non skid is available in linen beige or whisper gray. She is a cutter rigged sloop with Selden spars.
Down Below The 54 has 6′ 11″ head room in the saloon. The raised saloon model has 9″ less with step downs forward and aft. The 54 comes standard with a choice between 2 layouts: either a centerline queen forward with a Pullman and head forward aft or 2 heads forward with 2 offset Pullmans forward aft. The beam is carried well aft for a luxuries master stateroom. The interior like all Hylases is solid teak and teak veneer. The portlights in the master cabin and saloon along with the doghouse windows let a good deal of light into the interior. These are semicustom yachts with many variations between.
The standard layout includes a large forward cabin contains a walk-around, centerline, queen-size berth with proper mattress, hanging locker, bookshelves, under floor board, and under berth storage. Aft and to starboard of the forward cabin is the forward head with separate shower stall, automatic shower drain pump and teak grating. Partially louvered doors open to the forward cabin for privacy and to the passageway. Across the passageway to port is a customizable third cabin. For example many 54 make this an office. The passageway houses the mast, shelf storage, and under floor board storage.
Aft of the passageway is a large, open salon that you could dance in. To port is a large dining area with sliding bench with custom adjustable backrest and storage and a drop-down table (forming a double berth). To starboard is a straight settee that slides out to make a 1 ½ berth with pad eyes for a sea berth. There are multiple, very large storage areas under and outboard of all settees and large upper lockers. Aft and to port of the salon is a transverse or longitudinal navigation station. Inboard of the navigation station is an island with open upper access to the galley containing a chart storage drawer, chart table, stainless steel double galley sink, and marble or Corian countertop, utility locker, companionway steps and one opening port. Aft of the salon to starboard is the seaway secure galley located in the walk-through to the aft cabin. The galley with top and front loading boxes while maintaining counter space.
Aft of the galley is the spacious master suite with a walk-around queen-size, centerline berth and proper mattress. Completing the stateroom are double bookshelves at the head of the berth, a large hanging locker, a shelf locker under the berth and below floor board and below berth storage.
Engine and Underway The large tankage and 135hp Yanmar diesel will give you the range even if the wind is not blowing. The standard engine is a 125 HP Yanmar diesel. The older Yanmars were great, but these new ones hum even quieter and more efficiently. The engine room can be accessed from all sides of the galley island, by an additional set of double doors in the passage, and through the master shower. When it is blowing, she is a dream to sail in comfort. The 54 is a continuation of the successful German Frers 46 design. Her increased length equates to faster cruising, and you should not be surprised by the numerous stories of around the blue planet passages.
Conclusion The 54 was jumpstart in the evolution of Hylas. The 54 became the first completely new Hylas design since the mid 1980’s. Her introduction hearkened Hylas’ evolution from a purchase and charter business model to a totally private purchase model. Introduced at a sailaway of $495,000, you will have trouble finding a pre-owned 54 for this price. You might want to take a look at the stretched 56-footer introduced in 2010 with her lengthened cockpit.

A Look at the Hylas 54
Hylas 54 review.
The Hylas 54 has a well-earned reputation for strength, comfort, and quality construction, systems and hardware. Designed by German Frers and built by Queen Long. While no longer in production, the Hylas 54 remains one of the most popular choices for cruising couples with ambitions of distant cruising. Versatile and fast, the yacht is exceptionally capable in a variety of sea-states.
The Hylas 54 is most commonly cutter rigged with a Selden triple spreader aluminum stoway mast, a desirable option popular among many is the in-boom Leisure furling main. The modern cutter sail plan provides a wide range of selections to fit all sailing conditions. Ease of operation is provided by thoughtful leads of sheets and halyards along with electric or hydraulic furling mainsail, staysail, and headsail.
The hull is constructed of fiberglass-twaron, a carbon aramid fiber with alternating solid FRP glass layup. The glass is hand laid with no core and utilizes vinylester resins and isophthalic gel coat for superior protection against osmosis and hull blistering. The deck is cored with end grain balsa except in high-load areas such as deck fittings where it is solid. The hull and deck joints are chemically and mechanically fastened with a wide flange and 3M 5200 and stainless steel bolts on 4” centers with backing plates. Interior bulkheads are tabbed on all sides. Massive floors create a rigid hull with plenty of athwartship support. The fin keel is solid lead and bolted to the hull with 35mm stainless steel bolts, which in turn are supported by an 8mm stainless steel backing plate.
The spacious cockpit contains U shaped seating with a very comfortable seat and backrest cushions and a solid teak varnished table with teak drink holder. Impressive custom pedestal/instrument pedestal and custom switch panel allow for monitoring navigation instruments and on deck equipment and lights. Watertight collision bulkhead forward with independent overboard drainage. Watertight stern sections across aft lazarettes and stern locker with integral swim platform and transom steps.
Two deck mold options were offered – the standard deck or commonly called the deck saloon, and the higher profile raised saloon. The deck saloon offers a ‘sleek’ profile with less steps leading fore and aft of the main saloon while the raised saloon option allows more natural light into the main saloon with slightly taller windows and the ability to carry extra fuel and water in the tanks.
While each Hylas 54 could be tailored to the original owner’s specifications, most offer a three-stateroom interior arrangement with large aft master with ensuite head and stall shower and two guest cabins forward with a second head ensuite to the v-berth and accessible from the passageway. The galley is expansive, with 11’ of counter space along the passageway to starboard. The main salon mid-ship is bright and airy with settee to starboard and dinette to port. Adjacent to port of the companionway is a sizeable nav station. Some are configured with a forward facing nav station with bookshelves and cabinetry aft while others are outboard facing with walk-thru access to the aft stateroom. Cabinetry can be louvered, flat-faced, or raised panel depending on personal taste. Most are finished with a satin varnish while some have a brilliant high-gloss finish on the solid teak joinery. The cabin sole is most commonly solid teak with holly inlays and a gloss varnish finish but many of the late models were finished with bamboo with teak inlay giving a lighter appearance to the interior.
This initial design concept for the Hylas 54 was with the cruising couple in mind. The smart design and careful consideration of all aspects of the yacht make this an immensely popular choice for many. The 54 is relatively available on the brokerage market and common on many sailors ‘short list’ for good reason.

ACADIA sleeps six in three private cabins, plus 2-3 in the main salon. The interior joiner work is varnished teak with a satin finish with generous solid teak trim, louvered locker doors and raised panel cabin doors throughout. Cabin soles are varnished bamboo with contrasting teak inlays. White fabric overhead panels with Oceanair hatch screens and blinds in all cabins. Interior fabric is all white Ultraleather (2018) in excellent condition. There are LED overhead, reading and courtesy lights throughout (all new 2017), as well as 12 volt adjustable cabin fans throughout.
Forward Cabin
Starting forward, this cabin features a large centerline queen-plus berth. There are full length lockers above, port and starboard, and large split lockers under berth which also lifts up with gas assist lifting arm. Additional storage includes a hanging locker, two drop front lockers and a locker with shelves. A large 2x2 deck hatch provides nice light and ventilation
Port Cabin
The second guest cabin is aft and to port, featuring large upper and lower berths and lots of floor space. There are three large louvered lockers with shelves, two drawers and several louvered lockers outboard upper berth. An opening hatch and two opening portholes provide excellent light and ventilation.
Forward Head
Opposite to starboard is the forward guest head which features a vanity with stone counter and sink, mirrored lockers and a Jabsco electric toilet. Adjacent is a separate shower stall with fold down teak seat. There are two access doors – one private from the forward cabin and one from the passageway. A deck hatch and two portholes keep the area well ventilated.
Main Salon
The spacious main salon is bright and open thanks to the raised deckhouse design with extra headroom, large windows and numerous deck hatches and portlights. To port is a comfortable dinette with L-settee outboard and folding seat inboard. The custom dining table, with a removable center leaf, can be lowered to convert to a double berth. To starboard is a full-length settee with a concealed Sony 32” flatscreen outboard on electric lift. There are multiple storage compartments under, outboard and above both of the settees. There is also a full height cabinet aft of mast with shelves, and a cabinet for storage of table leaf and companionway hatch boards. Nav Station
Aft and to port is an L-shaped nav station with adjustable pedestal chair. There is a full-size chart table facing outboard and a lift-up laptop table inboard. Here one finds communication/nav equipment, as well as electrical breaker panels and main switches.
One of the impressive design features of the Hylas 54 is the immense galley that runs aft for 11’ between the salon and owner’s cabin. No lack of counter and storage space here - there are many lockers and drawers both inboard and outboard, including a full-height pantry.

Owner's Cabin
The spacious full-beam master suite aft is accessed through the galley passageway. This cabin features a king-sized berth, with a settee to starboard and vanity to port. There are numerous drawers and lockers including a deep hanging locker on centerline with hidden safe, six drawers, and large cedar-lined lockers outboard, with shelves. There is a full-length mirror and a Sony 20” flatscreen TV. Four opening portholes, two hull portlights and a large deck hatch provide plenty of light and ventilation.
Owner's Head
The private ensuite head features a vanity with stone counter and sink, mirrored lockers and a Jabsco electric toilet. A private shower stall is attached, with fold-down seat and washer/dryer outboard.
ACADIA has an extensive suite of electronics and navigation equipment allowing for safe and seamless travel around the globe. Three networked Raymarine Axiom 12" MFDs offer real time data at multiple locations throughout the yacht. A dedicated desktop computer and monitor at the spacious nav station allows for additional route planning and optimization.

– Faster than you’d expect for a 50,000-pound boat in light air. With apparent wind less than 10 knots, the Hylas 54 still sailed at 7 knots.
– The Hylas 54 has nice lines, and the waterline has been lengthened by removing the overhangs, resulting in an LWL of 45 feet, 9 inches. Combined with a displacement-to-length ratio of 220 and sail area-to-displacement ratio of 17.6 and the performance capabilities of this bluewater design is clear.
– A bulletproof hull. Hylas builds their hulls with Twaron, an aramid fiber (similar to Kevlar), layered with solid fiberglass, making it extremely strong.
– A comfortable cockpit that is designed well and secure in heavy winds. Electric winches that are easy to reach from the helm make shorthanded sailing possible in a boat this big.
– An engine with easy access and fuel tanks with a 200-250 capacity provides a powering range of more than 1,000 miles.
– Excellent stainless work on deck, including extended stern pushpits, massive cleats and chocks, and hefty stainless handrails.
– A luxurious interior with beautiful teak woodwork. ACCOMMODATIONS:
Accommodation access is via the well-protected companionway . An easy step over a threshold with stainless-steel capping reaches the curved-tread companionway ladder. Stainless-steel grab rails outboard of the smoked acrylic/stainless steel-framed sliding hatch and integral with the ladder sides, provide ample handholds. The washboards are louvered teak.
Very few yacht builders deliver interiors with such elegance, light, and functionality as Hylas Yachts as epitomized on this Hylas 54 Voyager. Joinery is even-grained varnished Burmese teak. The cabin sole is satin-varnished bamboo and teak accent strips. Bilge access panels lock in place. Cabinet doors are louvered and positively closed with pop-up pushbutton latches. There are no sharp corners; all are radiused for safety and strength. Countertops in the galley and heads are Corian. Fiddles are fitted on all shelves and counters. The overhead is padded white vinyl over marine plywood on removable panels for access to deck hardware. Hardware and lighting is stainless-steel or chrome-plated. Flush-mount overhead spot lights are wall switched. Reading lights are sensibly placed. Handrails are thoughtfully positioned for safely moving about the cabin while at sea. Hatches are fitted with wood trimmed screens.
Voyager has a three stateroom/two head layout with the owner’s stateroom and ensuite head/shower aft. The galley is located to starboard in the aft cabin passageway making good use of under cockpit and under side deck space. The main salon is raised; taking advantage of the large fixed side and forward windows. The navigation/office space is to port of the companionway, close to the cockpit yet well-out of the way. A forward passage to starboard of centerline in the main bulkhead accesses the midship’s stateroom (to port), guest head (to starboard), and forward stateroom. Headroom is a cavernous 6’ 8” in the salon, and generally 6’ 5” throughout except the aft end of the galley where it measures 6’ 3”.
The forward guest stateroom is entered through a locking privacy door at the forward end of the passageway. Immediately to starboard is a door to the forward head. The V-berth measures 74” long. There are cabinets above the berth, up high below the side decks. Narrow bookshelves run along the hull sides below these cabinets/outboard of the berth. Additional cabinets and top opening bins are beneath the berth. There are lockers aft to port and starboard. A large overhead hatch provides natural light and ventilation. Two reading lights, three overhead spot lights, cabin fans, 110v and USB outlets and two stereo speakers complete this comfortable guest cabin.
The forward head is finished in white laminate with varnished teak trim making it bright and easy to clean. Entrance is via a door in the forward stateroom or a separate locking door in the forward passageway. Two spot lights and a dome light in the shower stall are switched at the sink, just inside the forward door. A deep oval sink is integral to the Corian counter and set in a curved/fiddled vanity. Three teak-trimmed mirrors are attached to medicine cabinet doors and properly angled up for shaving. A Raritan electric head is outboard, aft of the sink. A large stall shower is aft and fitted with a hinged/folding seat shower nozzle and adjustable bar for showering while seated or standing. A teak-trimmed/acrylic door closes the stall. A removable varnished teak grates cover the in the shower. There is a linen locker is outboard of the shower below the side deck. A single lever mixer valve, opening cabin side ports, overhead hatch, cowl vent, fan, and 110V outlet complete this space.
The midship’s guest stateroom is to port and just forward of the main bulkhead. A pocket door slides aft and latches to close this cabin. A pullman berth is outboard above a bank of drawers and top loading bins. This berth measures 80” long. This upper and lower inboard/forward cabinet is fitted with shelves. Forward and inboard, there is a hanging locker. A overhead hatch, cowl vent, cabin fan, a reading light, and overhead spot light, and 110V outlet complete this cabin.
The central dining, relaxing, and entertaining area aboard Voyager is the raised salon. The cabin sole is located 7” above the forward cabin sole and 9” from the nav station and galley soles. Upholstery is blue fabric on sculpted sectional cushions for comfort. Large, teak-trimmed windows are forward and on each side of the cabintop. Two overhead opening hatches are teak trimmed with hinged bug screens. An “L” – shaped dinette is to port. An inboard double bench seat is track-mounted allowing it to be slid and secured below the table or as a footrest for the starboard settee. The table raises up/down on its crank pedestal. A middle leaf is removable reducing the table for cocktails or games. Cabinets outboard above the settees on each side flank open bookshelves with fixed hull side ports. Storage bins are outboard of the seatbacks and below the seats. A long settee is to starboard with the seat bottom sliding out to create a wide sleeping berth. A flat screen TV is mounted on the forward bulkhead to port of the mast. Four reading lights, three overhead lights, air conditioning control, USB and 110V outlets, complete this space.
The navigation station is to port of the companionway and doubles as an office space; open to the salon and galley yet set apart by a partial bulkhead and sink countertop. An upholstered swivel pedestal chair has teak arm rests. Navigation/communications electronics are mounted outboard in a black laminate-faced cabinet. This cabinet face hinges for easy access to wiring. The electrical system switch/breaker panel is aft in a hinged panel. Analog volt/ammeters are above the breakers. Genset and inverter/charger control panels are inboard in this cabinet. The outboard chart table features a hinged top with storage below. A second desk area is aft with a dedicated laptop drawer. A double-door cabinet is above this aft desk. Three drawers are aft/inboard below the aft desk. A wide chart storage locker is inboard below the galley countertop/above the engine. USB and 110v outlets, two overhead spot lights, a reading light, cabin fan, and focused chart light complete this space.
The large and well-conceived galley is to starboard, running aft of the companionway and 9” lower via two steps from the salon sole. At eleven feet long, the galley has ample cabinet and countertop space for the most discerning chef. Countertops are a green Corian. The large double galley sink is underhung stainless steel and located inboard for overboard draining on all heel angles. Aft of this counter on the inboard side of the galley are two lockers, one of pots and pans and another useful for pantry storage. At the forward end of the outboard galley counter is a hinged/fold out trash bin with top access plate. Numerous storage cabinets are below the side deck, above the counter. The stove/oven is a high-quality three-burner unit with safety bar. A teak-trimmed Corian slider covers the stove or stows outboard/down as a backsplash when using the stove. The fridge and freezer have hinged top and front-opening doors. Remote reading thermometers in the aft bulkhead indicate freezer and fridge temps at a glance. An ice cube maker is below the countertop aft. Knife blocks are built flush into the countertop at the forward and aft ends of the counter. 110V outlets, two opening ports, underdeck lights, and overhead spot lights finish the galley.
A major feature of the Hylas 54 center cockpit design is the large owner’s stateroom aft of the cockpit; nicely separated from the guest staterooms and salon. This stateroom is entered through a locking privacy door aft of the galley. A centerline island berth measures 78” long by 6’ wide with forward rounded corners. Headroom measures 6’ 5”. To starboard, there is storage outboard in three lockers and a additional tall locker with shelves. To port, there are three low lockers and a tall bank of drawers. Additional storage cabinets and bin storage are below the berth. Open shelves are aft of the berth in way of the two opening transom ports. A double door hanging locker is forward on centerline below the cockpit. A teak-trimmed dressing mirror is on the head door. An overhead hatch, two opening cabin side ports, two cowl vents, two cabin fans, two reading lights, overhead spot lights, underdeck spot lights, stereo speakers, air conditioning control, and 110V outlets complete this stateroom.
The master head/shower is to port and entered from the stateroom. Finish is of white laminate panels with varnished teak trim and vanity base. The sink is integral with the alabaster Corian countertop in an elegantly curved vanity located outboard. An electric flush head is forward/outboard. Three teak-trimmed mirrors are attached to medicine cabinet doors and properly angled up for shaving. Another teak-trimmed mirror is mounted inboard above a grab rail. The large stall shower is forward and closed with a hinged, teak-trimmed acrylic door. A bench seat is outboard. A large locker with shelves is located outboard below the deck. Teak towel bars on chrome mounts are in the shower stall and head. 120V GFCI outlet, cabin fan, underdeck lights, and opening cabin side port complete this head compartment.

DECK & HULL:
Voyager’s hull is painted dark blue with a red boot stripe and gold cove stripe. Four stainless hull side ports are located below a teak rub rail that’s capped with stainless steel, protecting the hull sides from piling damage. The hull is trademark German Frers with a slightly overhanging and fine bow , slight sheer line, modest freeboard, and reverse transom with upper corner tumblehome.
A teak toe rail is mounted atop the hull to deck joint. Her deck is white gelcoat with blue molded nonskid. Tall stanchions support double lifelines running between bow and stern. Midships and stern boarding gates are fitted. A low coachroof is forward of the raised salon. Large side and forward windows are the trademark feature of this “raised salon” model, providing amazing light and views to the salon and galley area. This raised salon also protects the center cockpit. A raised coachroof aft of the cockpit affords aft cabin headroom. Handrails are fitted atop the coachroof (teak) and raised salon (stainless steel) for moving about underway.
The center cockpit is well-protected and comfortable for sailing or lounging. A dodger mounts atop a curved foundation and a folding bimini shelters from sun or rain. Cockpit seats are ergonomically designed, measuring 7’ 6” long, and 15” wide with 20” high backs. The cockpit sole is covered with a teak grate and cockpit seats are teak overlay. Water wells and large drains remove errant spray or rain. Chartplotter, VHF remote microphone, engine and bow thruster controls, and compass are situated on the steering pedestal.
Deck accessible storage is an important consideration on any blue water cruising yacht. Extra sails, dive gear, outboard gas, fishing gear, extra anchors, cleaning gear, folding bikes, inflatable SUP’s and kayaks, dock lines and fenders, cooking gas, etc. The Hylas 54 has ample volume for this gear without taking up valuable accommodation space. The anchor locker is forward with a flush gasketed and guttered deck hatch to access this space. Next aft, a deck hatch opens to the deep bow locker where spinnaker, lines, and other gear are stored. A watertight collision bulkhead is aft of this bow locker. Hinged lids in the aft cockpit coaming cover two smaller lockers; a great location for snatch blocks and “quick grab” items. Outboard of the cockpit, flush hatches access dedicated cooking gas lockers. Stern quarter lockers have removable/grated shelves to deal with their large volume. Finally, a full-beam locker below the stern steps is a wonderful location for outboard gas, stern anchor, and snorkel/dive gear.
The reverse transom has a molded lower swim platform/step and three narrower steps providing easy access from water, dock, or tender to the main deck. A fold over, hinged, four step swim ladder is mounted on the swim platform and deployable from the water for safety. There is a substantial stainless steel arch that doubles as a dinghy davit and platform for the 560 watt solar array.

The Hylas 54 is a fast cruising yacht that with a powerful sailplan and underbody appendages working in harmony to provide fast offshore passages and fun afternoon sails. Voyager features a Selden three spreader aluminum mast with a conventionally rigged mainsail stowed in a stack pack cover. The genoa and staysail are set on fixed furlers. Genoa sheet tracks are well inboard for tight upwind angles. A cruising spinnaker is available for light air off the wind sailing.
