No waters are off limits, either. The AB 80 has a shallow draft of just over four feet and a Seakeeper 18 stabilizer, meaning it can smoothly traverse shallow waters. On top of that, the yacht can be easily operated by the owner or an experienced captain. “Easy to use and operate for family holidays and long cruises, but also the perfect luxury day boat to get wherever you desire and discover new places with extremely reduced cruising times,” AB said in a statement .

Seafarers will be cruising in the lap of luxury, too. With a beam of nearly 22 feet, the AB 80 offers a generous interior for its size. Starting on the main deck, the light and airy salon, described as a “loft on the sea” by AB, features doors that open directly to the aft cockpit to create a huge, indoor-outdoor entertaining space. The main deck is also home to a galley that can transform into a bar thanks to a clever opening system, AB says.

The lower deck is outfitted with four generous cabins that can sleep up to nine guests and a swanky day head for seafarers. Further forward, the crew quarters in the bow can accommodate two crew. The lower deck can also hold two tenders.

Boat/Vessel Registration

If you own a sailboat over eight feet long or a boat/vessel with a motor (no matter the size), you must register it with DMV in order to legally operate it on California waterways.

To register your boat/vessel, you will need:

• A completed Application for Vessel Certificate of Number (BOAT 101) form. 
• If the original certificate is lost or damaged, complete an Application for Replacement or Transfer Title (REG 227) form to request a copy.
• Applicable fees .
• If you own a trailer for your boat/vessel, you need to register it separately .

You may also need:

• To complete an approved boating safety course and obtain a California Boater Card if you plan to operate a motorized vessel on a state waterway.
• Bill(s) of sale (if you bought your boat/vessel from a private party instead of a dealer). 
• A Statement of Facts (REG 256) form, in case you do not have a copy of the bill of sale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Any boat or vessel that you can use to transport yourself on water, such as a:

• Sail-powered boat/vessel that is over eight feet long.
• Vessel/boat with a motor (no matter how big it is).

If you bought your boat/vessel from an out-of-state seller, or if you recently moved to California, you need to register your boat/vessel with DMV within 120 days of bringing it into the state.

There are some boats/vessels that  do not  have to be registered:

• Canoes, rowboats, or any boats/vessels that use paddles or oars
• Sailboats shorter than eight feet long
• Sailboards or parasails
• A ship’s lifeboat
• Seaplanes on the water
• Boats that run on a track, such as amusement park rides
• Floating structures that are tied to land and use power, water, and a sewage system on the shore.

Dinghies must be registered with DMV.

Houseboats that have a motor must be registered with DMV.

Commercial boats/vessels that weigh more than five net tons and are longer than 30 feet must be registered (documented) by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Yes. Any boat/vessel that travels or is moored in California waterways, including private lakes, must be registered with DMV.

• A  documented boat/vessel  is registered with the U.S. Coast Guard and has a marine certificate. These boats/vessels do not have to be registered with DMV.
• An  undocumented boat/vessel  is registered with DMV and does  not  have a marine certificate from the U.S. Coast Guard.

If you buy a new boat/vessel, it is automatically considered undocumented, so you have to register the boat/vessel with DMV before you can put it in California waters.

Your boat/vessel will get a vessel registration number (beginning with CF before the numbers) when you register your boat/vessel with DMV.

You have to display your vessel registration number on your boat/vessel. Make sure it meets the following requirements.

Your Vessel Registration Number must:

• Be painted on or permanently attached to each side of your boat/vessel’s bow.
• Be written in plain, vertical block letters and numbers that are more than three inches high.
• Be properly arranged so you can read it from left to right.
• Contrast with the color of the background so that it is easy to see and read.
• Example A:  CF 1234 AB
• Example B:  CF-1234-AB

In addition to your vessel registration number, you will also receive a registration sticker. You should attach it to the both sides of your boat/vessel, three inches apart from your vessel registration number.

Your registration sticker must be clearly visible at all times. Please do not place any numbers, letters, or devices near the registration sticker (other than your vessel registration number and Mussel Fee sticker (if required)).

If you boat in California fresh waters such as the Delta, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and streams, you must purchase and display a Mussel Fee sticker next to your registration sticker. The Mussel Fee sticker matches the registration sticker by color and date.

You may purchase the Mussel Fee sticker online . The vessel registration/renewal and sticker transactions are separate. Once you receive your Mussel Fee stickers, place them on either side of the registration sticker as shown below.

Since 1972, all boats/vessels manufactured in the U.S. come with a Hull Identification Number (HIN).

The HIN must be:

• Painted on or permanently attached to your boat/vessel so that it cannot be changed or removed.
• Assigned and attached by manufacturers to commercially built boats/vessels.
• Assigned by DMV for homemade boats/vessels.

If your California Certificate of Ownership is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can submit a completed Application for Duplicate or Transfer of Title (REG 227) form.

If you lost your sticker, you can submit a completed Application for Replacement Plates, Stickers, Documents (REG 156) form to replace the lost certificates and/or stickers.

You can then mail the forms to DMV or visit a DMV field office in person.

You must renew your boat/vessel registration by December 31 of every odd-numbered year (for example, 2013, 2017, etc.), even if you do not use your boat/vessel.

To remind you that you need to renew your registration, DMV will mail you a renewal notice 60 days before your registration expires.

If you renew your registration by mail, please return the bottom portion of your renewal notice in the envelope provided with a check, cashier’s check, or money order to cover your fees .

If you do not receive or lose the renewal notice, you may contact DMV and pay your fees.

When you buy a boat/vessel from another person, you should also get the California Certificate of Ownership from the person who sold it to you. That person should sign/endorse the certificate on line 1. If there is a lienholder, you need their signature on line 2.

Once you have the California Certificate of Ownership, write your name and address on the back. Then you can submit the certificate to DMV along with the transfer fee, use tax, and any renewal fees that might be due.

If the boat/vessel has a trailer, you need to get the trailer title. If you cannot get a copy of the title, you can complete a Permanent Trailer Identification (PTI) Certification and Application (REG 4017) form to transfer it into your name.

If you decide to sell your boat/vessel, you need to:

• Give the Certificate of Ownership to the person who buys it. Make sure you sign the certificate on the front.
• Contact the DMV within five days of the sale and fill out a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (REG 138)  form.

You must provide the boat/vessel information (vessel registration number, HIN), the name and address of the buyer, and the sale date on the form.

• Submit the form online or by mail.

If the boat/vessel has a trailer, give the titling and/or registration documents to the buyer and submit a separate  Notice of Release of Liability (REG 138)  form.

Additional Information

Boats and vessels registered in California are included in property taxes by the county tax collector, depending on where the boat/vessel is stored or moored. DMV might deny registration renewal or transfer if the county tax collector tells DMV that you have not paid your personal property taxes.

Vessel registration becomes invalid when a boat/vessel is:

• Required to be documented by the U.S. Coast Guard.
• Transferred to a new owner.
• Destroyed or abandoned.
• No longer used primarily in California.

You must tell the DMV when a boat/vessel is:

• Moved to a different storage location.
• Documented through the U.S. Coast Guard.
• Destroyed, lost, or abandoned. Return the California Certificate of Ownership to DMV within 15 days.

Mercury Marine to lay off nearly 300 workers at Fond du Lac headquarters

FOND DU LAC (WLUK) -- Mercury Marine is laying off nearly 300 workers in Fond du Lac and making workforce "adjustments" at other facilities.

The boat engine builder says the layoffs are a result of a decrease in boat sales.

“I think when you look at the overall economy -- not only the state of Wisconsin, but throughout the nation right now, a lot of people are struggling with increased health insurance costs, rent for example, mortgage payments, and I think people are just prioritizing now what they’re spending their money on," said Fond du Lac County Executive Sam Kaufman.

"Obviously boats, engines, are one of those items that are not a priority. So, as I watch Mercury now over the last year, I’ve seen somewhat of a trend where their product is now being stockpiled, they have a lot of inventory to sell off of. And to me this was a turn that did not shock," Kaufman added.

Mercury Marine is the largest employer in Fond du Lac. Although company officials say the nearly 300 layoffs is less than 10% of their 3,500 total employees -- for those families, it's anything but a small impact.

"Any family that I know that's gone through a situation like this before, it's a difficult time for the family because now the panic sets in. How are we going to pay next month's bills? How are we going to do things for our kids? How about the summer vacations that they're going to try to plan?" Kaufman said.

FOX 11 spoke with a former Mercury Marine employee, who declined to go on camera. She said layoffs happen every few years as the economy fluctuates. In fact, she herself was laid off from Mercury Marine in 2009.

Now, as an employee at a boat service center in town, she too can tell that boat sales are way down. She says they’re almost exclusively helping customers fix up old boats so they don’t have to buy new ones.

Mercury Marine has announced a reduction in workforce of close to 300 employees at its Fond du Lac global headquarters, which will take place now through July, as well as some adjustments to overall operations in Wisconsin, St. Cloud, Florida, and Juarez, Mexico. These actions were taken due to softening of consumer demand in some of our markets mainly as a result of continued high interest rates and near-term reductions in boat production by Mercury’s boat builder partners. Mercury Marine's industry-leading products continue to gain market share around the world but at this time this is not sufficient to fully offset the overall market headwinds. Mercury remains one of the largest employers in the Fox Valley, and in the state of Wisconsin, with more than 3,500 full-time employees in Fond du Lac, and accounts for $5B in annual economic impact to the Fond du Lac Community,” a statement from the company says.

The company confirmed the legitimacy of a memo, dated Thursday, provided to FOX 11 by an employee, which said the 252 layoffs at Plant 15 are effective July 26.

Mercury Marine noted other companies in the sector have also laid off workers. For example, BRP in Sturtevant, laid off nearly 300 workers last month . According to media reports, Minnesota-based Alumnacraft and Missouri-based Tracker have also laid off workers.

Kaufman says the county has programs to help those who may be now looking for new work. He also says there are several positions within the county government that need to be filled.

Mercury Marine has an economic impact that reaches into the billions for the local economy.

"I'm just glad it's not worse. They're our biggest employer, we very much appreciate them being here and all their investment in the county, but being that they employ 3,400 people and they've laid off 250, it's unfortunate but again I'm glad were not talking a thousand people," Kaufman said.

Mercury Marine officials said they were not available for an on-camera interview. FOX 11 also reached out to the local labor union, but did not receive a response.

Mercury Marine cutting 300 jobs at Fond du Lac headquarters

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WBAY) - Mercury Marine announced it’s cutting 300 jobs at its global headquarters in Fond du Lac.

The company tells Action 2 News the job cuts are taking place now and will continue through July.

“These actions were taken due to softening of consumer demand in some of our markets,” Lee Gordon, vice president of corporate communications, wrote in a statement.

Gordon confirmed the authenticity of an office memo obtained by Action 2 News that identified “lowest seniority employees” who would start a long-term layoff on July 26. The memo sent from Human Resources on Thursday said the company was laying off 252 employees in Plant 15 indefinitely.

Mercury Marine blamed the softening demand on high interest rates and reduced production by boatbuilders that Mercury works with. Gordon listed Alumacraft and its owner, BRP, and Tracker Marine, to name a few. Since March, BRP permanently eliminated 298 jobs in Sturtevant, Wis., giving the workers pay in lieu of notice. Alumacraft made two rounds of layoffs at a Minnesota plant in the past year, the latest one last month, cutting its workforce at that plant in half.

“Mercury Marine’s industry-leading products continue to gain market share around the world but at this time this is not sufficient to fully offset the overall market headwinds,” Gordon said.

The company is also making adjustments at its other operations in Wisconsin; in St. Cloud, Fla.; and in Juarez, Mexico.

The Fond du Lac headquarters employs more than 500 full-time workers. Gordon says it will remain “one of the largest employers in the Fox Valley” and contributes $5 billion to the Fond du Lac-area economy every year.

Action 2 News spoke with Anthony Snyder, CEO of the Fox Valley Workforce Development Board, about what layoffs like this usually mean for employees and the workforce.

He says that losing a job can be stressful, but there are ways to improve your situation.

“Right now the Department of Workforce Development reports there are at least two job openings for every person eligible to work in this state,” said Snyder. “That means that the region should very easily absorb this layoff. It’s just a matter of well all the roles that are opened be a good fit for those who have been let go.”

Thanks to workforce retraining grants, Snyder and his team could send you to a technical college for a semester for additional training that makes you more marketable for your next job.

“In my eight years in this role, most people who’ve been laid off in our region have gone on to bigger and better things, simply because we’re still in a market that is gobbling up any of our available labor. Wages are up and being dislocated sometimes causes you to look for another job which causes you to get a job that might pay more,” said Snyder.

Snyder says it’s important not to panic.

“I know that what these individuals are going through is a very painful time and for many of them, it’ll be a very rough weekend and a very rough couple of weeks as this transition sinks in, but I can let them know with great certainty that they are in a good place right now.”

Fiji works to recover patrol boat that ran aground after being gifted by Australia

A mission to salvage a boat that ran aground on its maiden voyage after Australia gifted it to Fiji has begun, with efforts underway to minimise any environmental impacts including a potential oil spill.

Fiji's navy said on Saturday that favourable weather conditions would assist the recovery of RFNS Puamau, which hit a reef on Fiji's remote Lau group of islands on Monday, during its first patrol.

It said in a statement that Australia had sent specialised recovery equipment that would be used to extract the boat from the reef, with a second vessel set to transport the gear to the site.

"The Republic of Fiji Navy reaffirms its commitment to minimising environmental impact during the de-fuelling process now underway," it said.

"Measures to mitigate a potential oil spill have been deployed, and navy divers and engineers on scene continue to monitor the situation."

The crew of RFNS Puamau returned to Suva after being collected by another vessel, RFNS Savenaca, on Saturday morning.

There are no reports of injuries due to the grounding incident but the extent of the damage to the boat remains unclear.

The event is a major embarrassment for Fiji's navy, which accepted the vessel at a ceremony in Perth in March.

The Guardian-class patrol boat is a popular choice with Pacific countries, with many using them to survey and protect vast marine zones.

As part of the Pacific Maritime Security Program, 19 boats have been so far handed over to Pacific nations.

However, the Australian government has admitted the boats are flawed, with Pacific Minister Pat Conroy revealing the vessels have some defects including potential exhaust issues.

Two of the Guardian-class boats were destroyed by cyclones that hit Tuvalu last year.

Another boat was gifted to Samoa after another Guardian-class boat was damaged beyond repair there in 2021.
