Reviewed: Fountaine Pajot’s MY40 Powercat

Common wisdom says catamarans don’t like short, choppy seas, especially the kind of maelstrom created when a north-running Gulf Stream meets a leftover northerly breeze. “Washing-machine sea” doesn’t quite describe it.

But the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 power catamaran ate up the confused sea and then asked for more. Running bow on, beam to the lumps, this cat just licked her paws and seemingly smirked, “That’s all ya got?”

The MY 40 I got aboard will be a liveaboard cruiser for an experienced couple. Frankly, I envy them. French charter cats can lean toward easy maintenance at the expense of style, but the MY 40 surprised me with both. It has tactile fabrics, including on the settees in the salon, and lots of solid, light-oak joinerwork.

The salon is the living room for liveaboards, and it’s also home to the lower helm with a double-wide seat and a media room that has a pullout TV abaft the galley.

That galley is definitely liveaboard, with a full-height refrigerator/freezer, double sinks, a microwave/oven, a cooktop and an optional dishwasher. There’s also generous counter space and stowage.

What makes this boat a particularly desirable liveaboard is the owners’ stateroom, which is full-length with 6-foot 7-inch headroom. Inside is an athwartship berth about 6 inches narrower than a king. It faces a hullside window for great views. Forward, the head has a walk-in stall shower opposite a hanging locker, and the electric toilet is in an enclosed compartment.

The starboard hull has guest staterooms fore and aft, although the owners of the MY 40 I got aboard chose to replace the double berth forward with upper-lower bunks for youngsters.

The flybridge is comfortable underway or at anchor, with the helm behind a Venturi windscreen. A companion seat folds into a sun pad, and just aft are a sink, grill, fridge and ice maker.

Standard power is a pair of 300 hp Volvo Penta IPS400 diesels; 370 hp IPS500 diesels are optional. On flat water, the MY 40 hit 24 knots.

After getting to a gunkhole of choice, owners can lower the hydraulic swim platform into the water, creating a teak beach. Owners can also launch the 10-foot-8-inch tender with room to spare on all sides.

Thoroughly likable and refined, the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 could make many yachtsmen cat lovers.

There are no great surprises when you discover the MY 40: this new model fits perfectly into the range, without any design revolution. There are a couple of evolutions, such as the lateral windows which have become immense and the sides at the top of the coachroof, which are much more apparent. The design of the hulls, as ever, entrusted to Andrieu Yacht Design, presents very fine-entry bows at the point of attack, which are quickly topped by a marked chine. This design has many advantages: more rigidity, less drag, a quickly damped pitch, more useful volume inside and a significant reduction in spray on the deck.

Unlike many of their competitors in the powercat market, the MYs from Fountaine Pajot aren’t built on a sailing cat platform: they are the result of a 100% motorboat design. This work results in a smaller beam and a higher freeboard, which puts them closer to the monohull motorboat world. Because Fountaine Pajot's goal is not to limit themselves to seducing multihull enthusiasts who are tired of managing their sails, but rather to address a much wider audience. Note: the forthcoming Power 67 will originate from the Alegria 67.

What Size are the MY 40 and MY 44 Really?

Fountaine pajot motor yacht news…, did you hear there’s a new my 45 and my 50…    .

This means that the MY 44’s volume should be compared with other 50’ catamarans and the MY 44 compares to 60′ + monohulls.

Likewise, the MY 40’s volume should be compared with other 45′ catamarans and 55′ monohulls.

By that comparison, the price is quite comparable, but the advantages, remarkable— the following contains detailed, independent reviews, engine performance information, comparisons with other manufacturers and more.

Below is a comprehensive report from an independent reviewer, BoatTEST.com , with engine performance specs taken from actual tests for the first time on the new MY 40. 

In addition to volume and length considerations, there’s better fuel efficiency for a boat designed from the ground up to be a planning motor yacht, as well as a better fit and finish, and giant walk-in engine rooms (right).

At a comfortable cruising speed in the 8-10K range, they both get around 1 mile per gallon while at Trawler speeds, they easily have a 1,000-2,100 mile range (respectively for the 40′ and 44’). Cruise to the Bahamas, vacation, and get back on one tank of fuel. Need to beat the weather? They can do up to 20-25K depending on the model and loading.

Note, the performance figures in Captain Mike’s review aren’t from the manufacturer’s marketing department— they’re real numbers based on actual sea trials. If you’re skeptical about other manufacturers’ numbers, you should be! I urge you to look for reviews that Mike and his associates have done so you can truly compare apples to apples.

When comparing boats, consider the fit and finish, performance and fuel economy due to her motor yacht planning hulls— designed from the ground up to be a motor yacht with as good or better range when compared to a Trawler, but with the speed of a motor yacht and the stability and comfort of a catamaran. 

The 44, for instance, has a range at Trawler speeds of about 2,100 miles. Great for Great Circle cruising (and meets all of the height, width, and depth criteria) or for traveling the Intracoastal waterway from New York to Miami on one tank of fuel. Florida to the Bahamas, cruise, and get back on one tank. You get the idea. The best long-range cruiser out there, but with “get out of harm’s way” performance of 20+ knots. There just aren’t any other apples out there— only lemons. 

True motor yacht design criteria with Volvo IPS efficiencies, and Joystick control, make FP motor yachts a joy to handle in any seas or for docking. There is an excellent view of both transoms for docking from the flybridge or inside steering station. It also has a modern interior, electrical panels at base of stairs to owner cabin, great access, very large engine room space, IPS drive, easier to dock, more efficient handling, less vibration, huge flybridge area, large, bright, open main saloon, and 3.5′-4.3′ draft. The list goes on and on— there truly is no second when it comes to these catamarans, they are true motor yachts. 

In conclusion, just make sure you’re comparing apples to apples when you compare these motor yachts to lesser powered catamarans.

MY 40 was designed by architect Daniel Andrieu and the interior was designed by designers from Pierangelo Andreani Studio. The MY 40 offers incredible comfort, great interiors and an incredible amount of living space for a catamaran of its length. Innovative, high-tech composite materials constitute most of the structure of our sailing catamarans: hulls, flybridge, decks, bulkheads and more. Fountaine Pajot has perfected a resin injection and infusion technique, an advanced technology that gives our boats all their robustness. Thanks to this expertise, we can make our catamarans considerably lighter while maintaining consistent quality . Injection also makes it possible to meet the most stringent environmental requirements, in line with the commitments of the Fountaine Pajot Group.

Sailing catamarans from 40 to 50 feet are built at the Aigrefeuille headquarters, a few kilometres from La Rochelle. Catamaran yachts from 51 to 80 feet are built in La Rochelle, France, where they benefit from a slipway.

It is essential to define your sailing program: define the size of the crew on board, the level of sailing knowledge, the sailing project and the target sailing area. Every project is different. Whether you want to enjoy a large Owner’s suite, invite many friends and family on board, or telecommute during your voyage, the Fountaine Pajot cruising catamarans can be adapted to suit your needs. The ergonomics of Fountaine Pajot catamarans have been designed to facilitate manoeuvring at the helm, enabling a small crew (2 persons) to manoeuvre the boat easily, both in port and at sea. The unique design of the helm station allows good communication between the aft cockpit and the Fly relaxation areas. Of course, your level of navigation will determine your ability to sail with two or more persons!

Our electric catamarans now feature a large surface area of solar panels, up to 2000 WC, perfectly integrated into the design of the coachroof. Combined with equipment such as wind turbines or hydro-generators, they compensate for the energy consumption generated by on-board use during cruising. IPS engines, fitted on some Fountaine Pajot motor catamarans are designed to offer greater energy efficiency, which translates into better fuel economy compared to other systems of propulsion. The overall design of IPS engines aims to optimise a boat’s performance in terms of speed , manoeuvrability and fuel economy. And of course, IPS engines offer excellent manoeuvrability thanks to steerable propellors, thus facilitating manœuvres in tight spaces like harbours.

Spacious and comfortable when sailing, Fountaine Pajot motor yachts also offer fine cruising speed. Depending on the model and the engine installed on board, they can reach a max speed of 24 knots and 18 knots in fast cruising mode.

Power catamarans are naturally more efficient than monohull power boats . Depending on the model and the engine installed on board, at a high cruising speed, i.e. around 18 knots, motor yachts in the Fountaine Pajot range can reach between 260 and 425 nautical miles. At an “economical” cruising speed, they can reach up to 1000 nautical miles. The Power 67, the Flagship model in the range, can reach up to 4000 nautical miles at economy cruise speed. Thanks to its architecture with two floats and a central suspended platform, its mass is divided by two and better spread. Thinner hulls decrease the Archimedes thrust and require much less energy to move the keel through the water. Half the consumption of a monocoque is the result, increasing the range of motor catamarans for long crossings and long stays at anchor. For the same length, a catamaran gives much more living surface . The great width permits much more spacious cockpit space as well as a huge interior-exterior living space on one level,
