The Best Lakefront Restaurants in Chicago

Now that the fall weather has arrived in Chicago, this is the perfect time to enjoy the several lakefront restaurants, that are located either right on the beaches of Lake Michigan or close by, before they close for the season. Starting from north to south, my favorites include:

In Edgewater, a short walk east of the Granville Red Line stop, is a wonderful new find, The Waterfront Cafe . This is a casual, seasonal restaurant with a large outdoor terrace that is located along the lake in Berger Park. I went with a friend on a perfect July day and had a great crab salad sandwich. I highly recommend the experience and suggest that you go on the early side as the waits can be somewhat long. They are open for lunch and dinner, plus also have live music.

The Waterfront Cafe

In Uptown, make sure to have lunch at Montrose Beach at The Dock . The beach house is open in the summer and early fall and has good outdoor seating. I was back for the second time and loved my fish tacos overlooking Lake Michigan. There is parking on the street or in lots nearby.

Afterwards, make sure to walk along Montrose Beach , Montrose Harbor, the Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary and the Montrose Beach Dunes Natural Area. The views are really stunning. The Bird Sanctuary is a stopping point for food, shelter, and rest to migratory songbirds in Illinois during the spring, and again in the fall according to In Your Own State newsletters. Among the migratory songbirds you may see are warblers, thrushes, and purple martins. You may also be able to spot woodpeckers and owls.

Montrose Beach Dunes Natural Area

Located along the north side of Diversey Harbor, a block from Lake Michigan, is Bacino’s Italian Grill at 248 W Diversey Pkwy. This is a casual, seasonal restaurant featuring a menu of wine, cocktails, sandwiches, salads and pizza. It has a lovely setting in the back with outdoor seating. I enjoyed my grilled chicken panini sandwich and the service!

The Lakefront Restaurant is located at the Theater on the Lake. It is a wonderful spot for lunch or dinner along the lake with a sleek decor and great views.  They have both indoor and outdoor seating. I thought the service and the food was excellent. I really loved the pulled pork sandwich for lunch and highly recommend it! I was just back and loved their shrimp roll sandwich. You can make reservations online, which I recommend particularly when the weather is great.

The Lakefront Restaurant

The Theater on the Lake hosts plays along with live music events. Valet Parking is available. 2401 N. Lakeshore Drive at Fullerton.

To the south at North Avenue Beach is Avli at Castaways , a beachside boathouse. As a fan of their other locations in Chicago, I enjoyed lunch with a friend and their great food. They have a menu of mezes or appetizers, salads, sandwiches, bowls and desserts. The grilled salmon wrapped in pita with tzatziki, onion, and tomato was very good which came with tasty fries. 1603 N. Lake Shore Dr. There is a parking lot next to the boathouse. The views are amazing.

Avli at Castaways

The next stop is in the Gold Coast at Oak Street Beach. In the summer and fall months make sure to hit the beach. I was there for lunch at Whispers Oak Street Beach on a beautiful August day at 1001 N. Lake Shore Dr. I enjoyed watching the boats and the people on the beach while listening to classic Frank Sinatra. They have a bar as well as the restaurant. You won’t believe that you are in Chicago!

Near Navy Pier, is Caffè Oliva on the Ohio Street Beach and next to Olive Park. It is from the same team as “The Dock” at Montrose Beach. This is a seasonal bar and restaurant located right on the beach with outstanding views. It is open daily for lunch and dinner. It has a menu with mussels, burgers and sandwiches, salads, coconut shrimp, fried calamari, fish and chips and fish tacos. 550 E. Grand Ave.

Caffè Oliva

Recently opened at Navy Pier is celebrity Chef Art Smith’s new family-friendly restaurant, Reunion . It features Southern comfort food including fried chicken, fried catfish, fried green tomatoes, biscuits, mac & cheese and collard greens. I really enjoyed my shrimp and grits before a Sunday matinee, last week, at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. They also have a large outdoor patio.

If you know members of the Chicago Yacht Club , make sure to visit their clubhouse at 400 E Monroe St. The views of Monroe Harbor are really stunning overlooking the boats. They also have their more casual Belmont Station at 300 W. Belmont Ave.

Navy Pier welcomes tourists with a food court including McDonald’s and Starbucks. Forget the national chains and opt for the Chicago chain restaurants of Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, which offer Big City Chicken, Big Bowl, and Frankie’s By the Slice. There’s also Rainbow Cone, Frio, America’s Dog, a Billy Goat Tavern, and the Beat Kitchen (the Lakeview music venue actually has pretty amazing food). Don’t forget Giordano’s, I Dream of Falafel, and Snow Dragon Shavery.

This 36,000 square-foot bar and lounge on the third floor of Navy Pier’s Festival Hall has the nation’s largest rooftop deck , as certified by Guinness World Records. The space includes retractable glass walls to shield customers from the elements, seven fire pits, and seating for groups to drink and socialize.

Navy Pier is also home to Lirica , the all-day sister spot to Offshore inside the 223-room Sable Hotel . The Spanish- and Iberian-inspired restaurant offers dishes like paella, beef empanadas, and a short rib burger with smoked cheddar. It’s a great location for views of Lake Michigan.

Chef Art Smith’s Reunion

The latest addition to Navy Pier brings comfort fare from Art Smith, who served as Oprah Winfrey’s personal chef for a decade. Start with deviled eggs with crispy ham before digging into a plate of fried chicken with whipped mashed potatoes and housemade hot sauce. There’s plenty of space outside with booths and umbrella-topped tables.

The Dock at Montrose Beach

A favorite for waterfront dining on the north side is The Dock at Montrose Beach . After playing in the waves, strolling in the gardens, or letting your pup splash around at Montrose Beach , you can continue enjoying Lake Michigan from The Dock’s large open patio. The food is simple and fresh, the scenery is spectacular, and you can even catch live bands on weekends.

Clock Tower Cafe

The striking English Gothic clock tower that sits along the lakefront at Waveland is home to the Clock Tower Café . The casual spot is popular with those playing on the nearby tennis courts and golf course, but all are welcome to enjoy cold drinks and a casual menu. The Lakefront Restaurant

Located inside the historic Theater on the Lake, The Lakefront Restaurant is Chicago’s only lakefront spot open all year round. The Lincoln Park spot serves upscale tavern fare in its soaring interior or on the alfresco patio offering unbeatable views of both the skyline and Lake Michigan. Choose from a diverse menu of seasonally inspired dishes, from seafood to gourmet burgers to fresh salads. Their Sunday brunch service is also popular. Patio seating is weather permitting.

North Avenue Beach is home to one of the most popular beachfront restaurants. Castaways is instantly recognizable — when you spot the giant ship washed up on the sand, you’ll know you’re in the right place. While the first level’s menu consists of ice cream and snacks, the rooftop is a beach bar and grill with burgers and frozen cocktails. Also on the sands of North Avenue Beach, the resort-inspired Shore Club feels like an island getaway without leaving the city. SMITH & WOLLENSKY – This is one of the beautifully fitting establishments on Chicago’s riverside . A top eatery, it is the perfect spot to stop before, during, or after any boating excursion. The restaurant is home to a plethora of alcohol including ciders, daiquiris, and Revolution Anti-Hero. The drink list isn’t the only endless thing Smith & Wollensky has to offer. The tall windows offer stunning panoramic river views that make this restaurant a must see!

ESTATE ULTRA BAR  – If South Beach moved North for the summer, it would look something like this place where club music, hot servers, and one of the best rooftops in the city conspire to steal your afternoon. And as the late afternoon mules and sangrias give way to nighttime bottle service, thank God you can order $800 bottles of bubbly.

RIVER ROAST –  This former location of Fulton’s on the River pulls a major upgrade with a serious craft beer list including Penrose and Boulevard, not to mention a beautiful patio to enjoy your unique summer cocktails with names like Unicorn Tears and Dragon Kisses on. And did we mention the hand-carved meats?

Flatwater  – The somewhat hidden from the street restaurant has a small elevator near the river’s edge and actually shares its address with the American Bar Association. However float up from the water, and Flatwater is easy to spot with its large, elegant bay windows and river-level terrace. River rats can dock for free at Flatwater and either dine on their boats “take-out” style (same menu, but boaters receive their orders in take-out packaging) or in the restaurant. Dark-stained wood floors and a 54-foot marble bar distinguish the restaurant’s interior while the outside area sports couches and tables, giving it an almost lounge-like feel. But it’s Flatwater menu that is the main attraction, with upscale versions of American contemporary cuisine such as Kobe beef mini-burgers and salmon carpaccio.

Green Dolphin Street -This spot may be easy to miss, but the food is worth the find. The small orange-and-brown dock leading up to Green Dolphin Street, if you’re cruising the river’s North Branch, is where you’ll dock, tie up for free, and head up the stairs to enjoy an upscale restaurant. This spot is also home to live music every night. The dinner menu offers an assortment of steak, chops, chicken and fish entrees. Patrons can also mix ‘n’ match their entrees with several side dishes, including a tasty truffle macaroni and cheese, Parmesan garlic mashed potatoes and assorted sauteed mushrooms. Neither on-boat or take-out  service  is available, but with indoor and outdoor seating available, you’ll want to dine on the premises, then stay for the music.

O’BRIENS RIVERWALK CAFE –  Pregame before taking an architecture boat cruise at this cool little patio spot along the riverwalk. Take in stunning building views and stiff summer cocktails, that will leave all of your senses happy. 

City Winery Chicago at the Riverwalk –  City Winery on the Chicago Riverwalk provides Chicagoans and visitors a way to engage with the city in a unique way. Guests have a truly special experience with local and sustainably-made products. Located in the West Loop, City Winery Chicago is the perfect place to stop and unwind before moving to your final destination.

Taste of Randolph, Greek Fest among several summer festivals kicking off this weekend

CHICAGO (WLS) -- There's lot on tap this weekend across the Chicagoland area.

Dozens of festivals begin on Friday for people to sing, dance and eat their way through the summer months.

Souvlakia is sizzling at the Gold Coast Greek Fest at Annunciation Cathedral downtown.

"This festival is essential for us to continue our ministries throughout the year. It really helps support our community. We've been in existence for over 132 years here, and we're so proud to continue to be able to do that. And this festival is a big part of it," said organizer Jason Alexander.

Over in Wheaton, the Midwest's largest Scottish event makes its debut at the DuPage County fairgrounds.

The 38th Annual Scottish Festival and Highland Games welcomes guests to experience Scotland's rich culture, featuring heavy athletic competitions, cooking demonstrations and a whole lot of kilts.

"If you enjoy something about Scottish culture, whether it's bagpiping, good whiskey, great food, golf, Sean Connery," said Chicago Scots President Gus Noble.

Chicago Scots say there's something for everyone.

"We absolutely love it. The amount of people that come from all over the U.S., mostly the Midwest, but all the different bagpipers at different levels is just phenomenal," said attendee Danielle McFalls.

Back in the city, the West Loop community organization is hosting its 27th Annual Taste of Randolph.

The iconic street fest grows each year and features some of the world's best cuisine on the beloved restaurant row.

"It's a restaurant row within restaurant row. You can't beat it. There's literally a bite and a drink for every person and every pallet," said Taste of Randolph spokesperson Kelli Packer.

Organizers are expecting more than 50,000 visitors this year, plus awesome live entertainment.

"Not only do we have amazing restaurants that showcase the best of the best of Chicago, 14 incredible restaurants, but we also have bands here from around the world," Packer said.

Meanwhile, the Gold Coast Greek Fest opens to the public at 5 p.m. Friday. It runs Saturday and Sunday from noon to 11 p.m.
