The Schooner Woodwind II is an attention-grabbing vessel that soars through the Chesapeake Bay, powered by four enormous sails stretching a combined 1,800 square feet in length. Dobkin, like many guests who have climbed abroad the cruise boat, fell in love with it, revealing his true intentions.

He was making a movie. And for three minutes of it, Schooner Woodwind II would be a star.

Dobkin’s “Wedding Crashers” was released on July 15, 2005. Based in Washington, D.C., and Maryland, the movie was an absolute hit at the box office, breaking records as the first R-rated comedy to gross $200 million domestically. It quickly became a classic.

Brett Merritt flew in from Mendota, Illinois, on Tuesday for the sole purpose of traveling abroad the Woodwind for its celebration of the film’s 15th anniversary. He’s visited all the movie’s film locations, including Easton and St. Michael’s, with the exception of Pasadena, California, where the final wedding scene was shot.

Merritt is a movie site hobbyist and huge Vince Vaughn fan. After being cooped up for months in quarantine, Merritt decided to get away to see the Woodwind, along with the creepy stairs from “The Exorcist” and the Georgetown apartments Owen Wilson’s and Vaughn’s characters lived in.

“I just think it’s really cool to see something in person that millions of people have watched on TV,” Merritt said. Growing up vacationing in Ocean City, Maryland, has always had a special place in his heart, furthering his love for “Wedding Crashers,” an “Animal House”-esque comedy.

The plot goes like this: two bachelor best friends weasel their way into weddings to pick up women but end up falling in love with the daughters of a powerful politician.

There are “rules” to crashing weddings that are repeated throughout the film, most importantly don’t leave your buddy, or “fellow crasher” behind. Wilson and Vaughn play John Beckwith and Jeremy Grey, friends and divorce attorneys who grow in their friendship as their romantic relationships mature.

Along with a memorable cameo by Will Ferrell, Dobkin cast a young Rachel McAdams and Bradley Cooper for supporting roles early in their careers. McAdams is Claire, Wilson’s love interest and the daughter of Treasury Secretary Cleary, starring Christopher Walken. Cooper plays the role of “Sack Lodge” — the intense, pastel-color, polo-wearing fiance of McAdams — with expert hilarity.

The movie has a plethora of quotable lines and was aired religiously on weekend cable TV, turning comedy quirks into cult rituals.

Although the majority of the movie takes place in St. Michael’s, the Schooner Woodwind II made it a celebration of Annapolis, too.

In the movie, it’s Walken’s personal sailboat that Wilson is clueless to crew. During filming, Captain Jennifer Kaye, the real owner of the sailboat, laid on her back vertically from a large steering wheel with Walken at its helm. She placed a compass on her chest and steered the boat from the ground so Walken wouldn’t get distracted and mess up his lines.

The Woodwind is on full display in a scene that lasts three minutes and took four days to shoot, including aerial shots from a helicopter. As the movie’s 15th anniversary was approaching, it was a milestone Kaye’s family-run cruise company couldn’t afford to pass up.

In its 28 years of existence, Kaye’s sailboat cruise company — like all seasonal businesses hit especially hard by the coronavirus shutdown — has never faced a financial loss similar to the one the pandemic caused. During a normal season, around 60% of profits come from public tickets purchased by tourists and locals while the other 40% are private, corporate events that have plummeted this year.

Sails aboard the Schooner Woodwind II are typically packed with up to 48 people for an entertaining cruise, whether that’s guests sitting “cheek to cheek” getting to know one another, enjoying a beer tasting, listening to historical tours or even hearing live music on the boat, Kaye said.

But the pandemic resulted in a late start to the cruise season that opened with one restriction — customers must social distance.

“We saw the writing on the wall about being 6 feet apart,” Kaye said. So, she designed a layout to fit 22 guests in six designated “zones” on the boat for cruises that run four times a day, seven days a week.

Kaye looks to be creative with themed events to attract guests, including getting people together around a commonly enjoyed movie. Will Hart, who was supposed to be on a family vacation in Nashville on Wednesday, if not for the coronavirus, was in town on a short stay to visit friends in Annapolis. In a zone for four people, Hart said he was enjoying a relaxing day on the water.

At the front of the sailboat in a zone for two, state Sen. Stephen Hershey, an Eastern Shore Republican, drank a “Wedding Crashers”-themed IPA called “Crab Cakes and Football” by Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company. Hershey declined to comment about his trip.

As the wind guided the boat’s massive sails along the Chesapeake Bay, Wednesday’s cruise was a nice reminder of life’s pleasures during a time when common summer activities like crab feasts and oyster bars are enjoyed not in close company, but removed at a distance.

Annapolis schooner celebrates 10-year anniversary of ‘Wedding Crashers’

Author

Ten years ago this week, “Wedding Crashers,” a popular romantic comedy starring Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Christopher Walken and Rachel McAdams, hit movie theater marquees.

For one particular Annapolis cruise company, that makes for a special occasion.

During seven days in the summer of 2004, filmmakers rented the Woodwind II , a 74-foot wooden schooner, to shoot scenes that would become some of the film’s most memorable. Jennifer Kaye, who captained the sailboat during the shoot, will reprise her off-screen steering role on Sunday when the sailboat celebrates the milestone with a special themed brunch cruise.

In “Wedding Crashers,” Wilson and Vaughn’s characters, John and Jeremy, show up uninvited at weddings as a sport to eat free food, party and seduce women. But things change for the partners in crime when John falls in love with a bride’s sister, Claire (Rachel McAdams), who is the daughter of U.S. Secretary of the Treasury William Cleary, played by Christopher Walken.

John convinces Jeremy to tag along to an after-party at the Cleary family residence so he can spend more time with Claire.

The Woodwind II , ordinarily a sightseeing vessel for tourists, became Secretary Cleary’s luxury yacht.

Experienced sailors likely got a chuckle from those schooner scenes.

Claire: Are you OK?

John: Yeah, I’m just swinging the jib for your dad, starboard.

Claire: But starboard’s this way.

John: That’s right. What am I thinking? I’m used to sailing Down Under with the K iwis, so everything’s backward. Even the toilets, when you flush them, the water spins the opposite way. Really freaks you out the first time you see it.

But as the movie’s fans know, Rule No. 5 of wedding crashing is you’re an idiot.

Kaye, who believes she’s seen the movie a hundred times since its release, said the movie has done magical things for the business. TripAdvisor.com reviews often gush about the beautiful boat and its involvement in the movie.

“I don’t know if they’re seeking us out because it was in the movie, but I know that when they put two and two together … they get very excited,” she said. “I almost want to say it’s like credibility because it gives everybody a real clear picture of the boat.”

She’s had countless conversations that go something like this:

“We’re the sailboat in ‘Wedding Crashers.'”

Oh, you mean you look like that?

“No, no. We’re really the boat.”

John Pisani, a publicist on the film project at the time, said the director and producers chose Woodwind II for its regal look. Originally, the filmmakers were scouting boats listed for sale. But a friend of Kaye’s who worked at Annapolis Yacht Co. encouraged them to check out the schooner because of its stunning lines and ample room to accommodate a cast and crew.

When the director boarded the sailboat, he was sold. He loved the mechanical lever system with its ratcheting noises. The equipment would give the actors things to do during the sailing scenes.

“He was like a kid in a candy store,” Kaye remembers. “He was spinning all of our winches.”

The onboard footage was shot near Cambridge and Oxford, and shots getting on and off docks occurred near Kent Island. While Walken appears to be at the wheel, Kaye is actually crouched underneath the actor doing the real work.

The crew’s only disappointment with the movie was a shot that didn’t make it into the final edit. Bradley Cooper’s character, Zach Lodge, was vomiting at the house. In the bathroom window, the audience would see the schooner fly past at 101/2 knots.

“That’s the fastest we’ve ever been sailing on film,” Kaye said. “But that just stayed on the cutting-room floor.”

The crew plans to share this and other stories from the making of “Wedding Crashers” during the Sunday cruise. Participants will pay $79 apiece for food and adult beverages. Here are some clues as to what’s on the menu:

“Yeah! Crab cakes and football: That’s what Maryland does!”

“Hey, mom! The meatloaf! We want it now!”

“These bacon-wrapped scallops? Phenomenal.”

And here’s another clue about the onboard entertainment:

“Whatever, make me a bicycle, clown!”

The two-hour cruise, which departs from Annapolis Marriott Hotel, will have room for up to 35 passengers, and guests are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite characters, whether that means wearing a Purple Heart pin or quail-hunting attire.

Remember rule No. 115: Never walk away from a crasher in a funny jacket.

10 Iconic Will Ferrell Characters, Ranked By Likability

Alien: romulus is doing something the alien movies should've done over 40 years ago, hunger games movie with 89% audience rt score becomes streaming hit after prequel announcement.

  • Will Ferrell's iconic cameo as Chazz Reinhold in Wedding Crashers was a last-minute addition that almost didn't happen.
  • Test audiences went wild for Ferrell's surprise appearance, laughing hysterically before even knowing it was him.
  • Director David Dobkin had to beg the studio not to include Ferrell's cameo in the marketing to maintain the element of surprise.

Will Ferrell briefly appears in Wedding Crashers in one of the greatest comedy movie cameos ever, but his scene almost didn't happen. Wedding Crashers stars Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn as John Beckwith and Jeremy Grey, two friends who make a game out of going uninvited to weddings to sleep with the single women there, lying about their backgrounds and histories — until they both accidentally fall in love. A hilarious and R-rated bromance, Wedding Crashers is filled with likable characters who the audience can't help but cheer for even through their less savory moments.

While this 2005 movie is outside the Adam McKay and Judd Apatow universes which dominated comedy in the early 2000s to mid-2010s, even Wedding Crashers can't escape the inexorable pull of inserting one of the greatest comedy leading men in the story, even for a cameo, in the form of Will Ferrell. Ferrell was the undisputed king of comedy in the 2000s and 2010s , and he helmed the resurgence of R-rated comedies with Old School , Semi-Pro , and Step Brothers to name a few, and yet his appearance in Wedding Crashers almost didn't happen.

Throughout his career, Will Ferrell has played characters ranging from lovable goofballs like Buddy the Elf to loudmouthed jerks like Ron Burgundy.

Will Ferrell's Chazz Reinhold Wasn't In The Original Wedding Crashers Script

Owen wilson and the director wanted to add another funny scene at the end.

Originally, Will Ferrell and his character Chazz Reinhold weren't in the script. Chazz is the mysterious man who taught Jeremy the art of wedding crashing and towards the end of the film, John goes to see him. The Owen Wilson character is less than impressed by the middle-aged man swinging nunchucks, watching cartoons, and yelling at his mother (whom he lives with) to bring meatloaf. Chazz has even managed to outdo his own sliminess, now moving on to crashing funerals. " Grief is nature's most powerful aphrodisiac ," he sagely tells John. Every single line out of Ferrell's mouth is hilarious.

It's a welcome surprise as Ferrell's appearance was not even hinted at in the film, and he creates incredible energy just as the story is winding down, but it almost didn't happen.

It's a welcome surprise as Ferrell's appearance was not even hinted at in the film, and he creates incredible energy just as the story is winding down, but it almost didn't happen. Director David Dobkin told EW ,

"This scene wasn’t in the movie, and there was a moment when Owen was like, 'Wouldn’t it be funny if we crashed funerals?'... and then later when I was looking for an all is lost moment I said, 'Owen, what if you go see Chazz? You mention this guy Chazz and we never see him in the movie. What if you wanted to go see this guy to get some advice and he was crashing funerals? And you think all of this sounds really dark and you’re really at your bottom, but when you go with him and you’re at the funeral, it feels all wrong and you realize you should be by your friend’s side.' And so Owen kind [sic] went and wrote that scene."

Dobkin, Wilson, and Vaughn all wanted Ferrell for the role , who starred opposite Wilson in Zoolander and Vaughn in Old School . When Dobkin finally got him on set, he had only one day to film, and his direction consisted primarily of telling Ferrell to push it further,

"I remember it was midnight the night before and we were still trying to nail Will down. He got in in the morning, he read it, and he came out with his kimono on and the nunchucks, which was Owen's idea that he have those around his neck. [Will] was like, 'You want me to wear this?!' He was very laid back in the first take and I remember looking at him and I just said, 'I think he’s a little crazier.' [Laughs] Which is bad direction by the way. He was like, 'Oh, I know what you mean,' and he did it again, and I was like, 'Maybe more?' I mean, I really believe that I directed him by just saying 'more' until he had that fifth take and that is the whole take that is in the movie. It was one of those things that you shoot and you’re like, 'Is this really going to work?' It's a pretty weird sequence."

It is a pretty weird sequence, but it's also one of the funniest cameos in a comedy movie.

Test Audiences Went Wild For Ferrell's Wedding Crashers Cameo — Before They Even Knew It Was Him

Dobkin had to beg the studio to hide the cameo in the marketing.

The first test screening let Dobkin know that his strange Will Ferrell sequence was a winner. When they showed the film, Dobkin said,

"The craziest thing happened, which is that when Will comes walking down those steps as Chazz, you cannot see him, and there is an audible reaction of people starting to laugh and have this reaction to the character before you even see that it’s Will. I can never explain it, and I remember showing it to Owen later and being like,' 'How do they know? What is it that they think is about to happen here?' I always wondered what it was the audience thought was coming down those steps, because the energy in the theater was just so crazy. And I think at that point of the movie you’ve had so much fun, it’s such a great ride that you’re just not expecting one more thing."

There is something ominous about the way Chazz is hidden in the shadows before he reveals himself and the camera pan over to him is jarring, but at the same time, he's clearly wearing a shiny bathrobe, so there's a juxtaposition of menace and absurdity that an audience can't help but laugh at . After the warm reception, Dobkin knew what he had on his hands and had to beg the studio not to use Ferrell's (uncredited) cameo in the marketing of the film.

The late Arizona Senator John McCain and CNN contributor James Carville also made cameos in Wedding Crashers as friends of U.S. Secretary of the Treasury William Cleary (Christopher Walken).

Dobkin said about the surprise reveal,

"Every first trailer that they cut had him in it, and I was like, 'Guys, you can’t do that, you’re ruining the joy of a reveal. Yeah, you need to sell the movie but you’ve also got to leave an experience for people and something for them to discover. We asked all of the reviewers, 'Please don’t ever say that he’s in the movie,' and there was so much love for the film that no one leaked it. It was such a lovely thing."

Maintaining the surprise appearance of Will Ferrell does make his incredible cameo work even better. Wedding Crashers is filled with memorable and hilarious moments and saving a literal surprise reveal at the end for the best joke finishes the movie on a high note, ensuring the audience gets to the credits happy and laughing.
