Cheers to that new-boat smell.
[email protected] What’s that sweet, salty fragrance wafting through the build sheds of Europe? It’s not the fake new-car smell that automotive engineers and chemists expend so much time and energy tweaking to massage our senses and help us validate our purchases. It’s related, but not the same. Instead, it’s that new-boat smell. And it appears to be making its way in increasing volumes to U.S. shores. Yachtbuilders weren’t exactly hurting before the pandemic, but the surge of new orders a year ago had them surprised and downright giddy. Visits to a dozen or so yards this past June showed the excitement continues. Despite lingering pricing challenges with materials, supply-chain uncertainties, labor shortages, the Ukraine war and economic turmoil in some places, European builders are still high on the continued strong…
LUXURY WITH ATTITUDE
Mangusta’s Maxi Open 165 REV is an evolution of the Italian builder’s classic 165, which has seen a dozen hulls delivered since 2007. The updated model adds living space, moves the owner’s stateroom from the lower level to the main deck, and maintains the sporty, open look that has long appealed to fans of the Mangusta brand. Igor Lobanov at Lobanov Design in Spain was tapped to work with Mangusta on the new model after Maurizio Balducci, CEO of Mangusta’s parent company, Overmarine Group, saw the designer’s exterior on the 361-foot (110-meter) Oceanco Jubilee. Lobanov says his background in transportation and automotive design further inspired his work on the Mangusta REV, as did keeping the 165’s original Italian style. “My idea for the new Mangusta 165 REV was to have…
GOING GLOBAL
Come Together, the first hull of Amels’ Limited Editions 60, was built for a repeat client who likes to name his yachts after Beatles tunes. His two previous yachts were the 212-foot (64.6-meter) Imagine and the 292-foot (89-meter) Here Comes The Sun (the largest yacht built by the Dutch yard to date). Both of those yachts had exterior designs by Tim Heywood. The 197-foot (60-meter) Come Together bucks that trend, sporting a geometrically shaped Espen Øino exterior with a custom metallic pebble-gray hull. Delivered last year, Come Together is the owner’s smallest new build. He acquired it with the sole purpose of pursuing global adventures. It’s also his first hybrid-powered yacht. The Damen propulsion scheme reportedly reduces fuel consumption and emissions, and minimizes noise and vibration. The yacht’s inaugural season was…
GRANDE DESIGN
Big by name and big by nature, Azimut’s Grande 26M looks and feels more substantial than its overall length of 85 feet, 7 inches. A raised pilothouse design imparts the suggestion of a superyacht profile, while the main-deck master stateroom’s side windows and full-beam head heighten the illusion of being on board a yacht closer to 100 feet long (30 meters). Superyacht designer Achille Salvagni styled the Grande 26M’s interior with a mix of tactile surfaces, organic shapes and contrasting tones. Curves and flat planes coexist quite equably, while the occasional ovoid hole in a bulkhead adds a certain levity. It is far from a traditional scheme, and it provides a pleasing level of individuality for a production yacht. The star of the show is of course the fantastic view…
FROM BEACHY TO BROCADE
Jonny Horsfield is a self-proclaimed workaholic. He also admits to being a bit of a control freak. Since he founded H2 Yacht Design in 1994, the London-based company has designed about 60 yachts. “It is an ideal situation when we get to do both the exterior and interior of a new build,” he says. “We have an incredibly competent team, and, as such, my overriding ambition is always to do excellent, detailed work, not to grow the business larger.” That team includes members who are British, Spanish, Italian, French and Australian, each bringing his or her own spin, not only to yachts, but also to residential projects such as a villa in Switzerland and a New York apartment. And, the company is opening a satellite office in Monaco. “Monaco is…
Sumptuous SHORE LEAVE
It sounds corny for a Maldivian resort to be built in the shape of a turtle, but about 20 yachts visit Velaa Private Island each year. They’re drawn by the coral reefs and marine biodiversity found in the Noonu Atoll, and the fact that the place is delightfully far removed from the tourist-filled resorts south of the Maldives’ densely populated capital, Malé. “The Maldives offers the ultimate get-away-from-it-all experience, and everything the Indian Ocean has to offer,” says Y.CO charter broker Eleanor Bloodworth. “For a yacht that can operate diving, fishing and surfing, the Maldives is the ultimate playground. Within its remote atolls live incredible marine life, endless surf breaks and pristine beaches ideal for a superyacht beach setup.” As part of a cruising or charter itinerary, Velaa is far…
