Owner Archetypes

submarine super yacht

MIGALOO Private Submersible Superyachts intentionally appeal to a highly exclusive and discerning group of Owners, though spanning a broad spectrum of age groups, professions, genders, locations and cultural backgrounds.

These Owner archetypes are characterized by a common trait - an outstanding motivation for owning and operating a MIGALOO Private Submersible Superyacht.

“People that have decided to buy a yacht will now have to consider if their vessel of choice can also dive down to 200 meters,” U-Boat Worx chairman and founder Bert Houtman said in a statement.

The superyacht submarine will be able to stay underwater for up to four days, but can only cruise underwater for six hours at a time. As an added bonus, the Nautilus can make a quick escape in the face of choppy waters.

“If the sea becomes too rough, you simply dive and continue your voyage in comfort,” Houtman adds. “With the Nautilus, the yachting market will never be the same again.”

U-Boat Worx Nautilus Submarine Superyacht

The luxurious interior offers all the comforts of a superyacht and can be fully customized by the client. As standard, the layout comprises a combined lounge and dining area of 538 square feet, along with a fully equipped galley, one owner’s suite, four staterooms and sleeping quarters for up to six crew. You’ll have some pretty incredible underwater views, too, thanks to the large circular windows throughout.

When above the water, seafarers can make use of the massive sundeck, which is equipped with a freshwater pool, a bar and an alfresco dining table. This area is neatly retracted before the sub slips below sea level, of course. The Nautilus is also fitted with a new, pressure-resistant electric tender called the Aronnax that can transport up to five seafarers to underwater dive spots. The tender is stowed under the aft deck and stays outside while the Nautilus is diving.

Nautilus: U-Boat Worx releases new renderings of 37.5m superyacht-submarine crossover

Dutch submersible specialist U-Boat Worx has released fresh renderings of a 37.5-metre underwater superyacht concept called Nautilus. First presented during the Monaco Yacht Show 2022, the design has been developed in collaboration with German-Turkish yacht and aviation design studio Officina Armare.

Capable of functioning as both an on-water vessel as well as a submersible, Nautilus has a depth rating of 150 metres. The diesel-electric model has a surface cruise speed of nine knots and an underwater speed of four knots and it will able to stay underwater for up to four days at a time. At cruise speed, the underwater endurance is six hours and range is 3,200 nautical miles.

When not in use, Nautilus can be docked at any quay that can accommodate its 6.5-metre draught.

When functioning as a yacht, Nautilus has a range of relaxation and recreational features including a sizeable sundeck equipped with a freshwater pool, a bar, and a dining table where guests can enjoy meals. When the submersible is lowered below the sea’s surface, this al fresco arrangement can be retracted.

The interior of the submersible yacht includes a 50 square metre dinner and lounge area called the Mezzanine Observation Lounge, which benefits from a set of four-metre circular windows. The proposed design for Nautilus includes a master cabin and four additional cabins, as well as sleeping quarters for up to six crew.

Elsewhere, Nautilus is home to a pressure-resistant electrical tender, which is stowed under the aft deck. This tender, called Aronnax, may also be used for transporting five scuba divers underwater to the intended dive spot.

“People that have decided to buy a yacht will now have to consider if their vessel of choice can also dive down to 150 meters,” said U-Boat Worx chairman and founder Bert Houtman. He pointed to numerous advantages of Nautilus, including its efficacy when it comes to combatting seasickness. “If the sea becomes too rough,” said Houtman. “You simply dive and continue your voyage in comfort. With the Nautilus, the yachting market will never be the same again.”

He added that the company's vision was to allow people to explore the ocean in the safest, most comfortable and luxurious way. "Nautilus is the realisation of this vision," he said.

Image

THE BEST-SELLING SUBMARINE IN THE WORLD

With a superior double-ended viewport design and numerous interior and exterior customization options, the U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub range is the best-selling submersible in the world, without peer.

Since the inception of the Cruise Sub series in 2018, more than 15 models have been designed, built, sold, and are deployed in active dive operations. No other company has sold more submersibles of the same type – or even combined. These submersibles have achieved record sales and enjoy continued success, being the most sought-after in the world.

Image

THE RECORD-SETTING CRUISE SUB SERIES

The U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub 7 – 1,140 is still the record holder for highest-capacity deepest diving submersible. When the first model was launched in 2018, it immediately gained recognition for its versatile capabilities.

U-Boat Worx set numerous diving records showing the world submersible deep diving can now be done with the whole family. The six passenger, one pilot configuration delivered an unparalleled experience and has a level of comfort and luxury only found in the exclusive line of U-Boat Worx submersibles.

Image

SETTING THE INDUSTRY STANDARD

We have continued to set the standard in the submersible industry, which is the envy of our competitors. Our Cruise Sub series has generated a unique selling proposition both for cruise lines and high-end tourism operators. The experience and knowledge gathered from extensive diving in our submersibles has provided invaluable data for our highly qualified experts, ensuring continuity of the most highly regarded submersibles in the world.

It generates such a wealth of knowledge of the underwater world, best diving sites and ace pilots, that we have brought our customers closer together in sharing both knowledge and pilots. Creating an industry spanning group of satisfied clients into one satisfied industry.

Image

SAILING IN ALL DIRECTIONS

Apart from the basic forward, reverse, up and down movements, the submersible can also move laterally. Lateral movement greatly optimises object approach, view, and dive efficiency. Combined with the revolving seating platform the Cruise Sub offers all guests the best view possible regardless of sailing direction.

Image

THE BEST VIEW FOR EVERYBODY

The exceptional architecture of the Cruise Sub with its two large acrylic spheres offers an incomparable immersive dive experience. All passengers share the same unique, undisturbed and undistorted view in all directions. With other tourist submarines passengers have little space or small windows. The spacious interior inside each acrylic sphere of the Cruise Sub allows for a comfortable dive experience while being surrounded by the deep sea. The passenger seats in each sphere are mounted on a revolving platform that can turn to face any direction in order to experience the best view.

Image

FORWARD AND REVERSE EXPLORATION

Besides the ability to sail while the two acrylic spheres face the subject, these submersibles can also sail forward or in reverse direction. Use all horizontal thrusters while moving forward or in reverse to cruise quickly from dive site to dive site. During the entire dive with a Cruise Sub the seating platform can be turned in any desired position in order to get the best view.

BOARDING POSITION

While boarding the Cruise Sub both seating platforms face the middle, which allows passengers to get to their seats in comfort. Underwater, passengers may choose this position to share their experience and enjoy each other’s company.

Image

Some may believe that getting a submersible ready to dive is a time-consuming operation. However, Owners of U-Boat Worx submersibles know that their submarines are simple, efficient and easy to launch and recover. Pre-dive preparations are swiftly executed by our effective design, state-of-the-art software and smart checklists that ensure your submersible is ready to dive whenever you are.

Image

MINIMAL MAINTENANCE

Maintenance is limited to rinsing the submarine with fresh water after use and recharging the batteries. The Cruise Subs can dive up to ten times each day – meaning that an unforgettable sub-sea adventure can be offered to 80 guests daily.

EASY BOARDING

The Cruise Sub is highly stable yet deftly manoeuvrable on the surface. These are very important characteristics for easy boarding of the sub. Nobody gets wet feet while embarking or disembarking the Cruise Subs! Ergonomic and strategically placed handrails, grips and steps help explorers young and old to board safely and comfortably.

remote controller with two joysticks for the nexus submersible

EFFORTLESS CONTROL

Each U-Boat Worx submersible is delivered with a world-class pilot training course. The intuitive interface of our submersibles is easy for pilots to learn. Unique to the U-Boat Worx private submarines is passengers being able to navigate the submersible while under supervision of the pilot. The unique control device – the MANTA Controller – can simply be handed over by the pilot to his guests for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to personally steer a submarine.

Image

LAUNCH AND RECOVERY

When designing each model, U-Boat Worx factors in a variety of specific solutions to ensure safe and effortless launch and recovery from any type of support vessel. The Cruise Sub range is no exception. Its dual lifting point configuration – optionally via a single lifting point – allows for safe and quick launch and recovery.

Another unique feature of each U-Boat Worx submersible is the MARLIN Controller. This wireless remote control allows the operator or pilot to steer the submarine while it is on the surface – effortlessly guiding the sub away from, or back to, the support vessel.

Even with the impressive spacious interior for the large number of passengers, the Cruise Sub has a relatively small footprint. Once the Cruise Sub out the water is, it will demand very little space on the support vessel.

Image

TOURIST OPERATIONS TO GREAT DEPTH

When the Cruise Sub is used for tourism it will offer tourists a once in a lifetime experience. Depending on the model, they can even dive to depths of 1,700 meters. The Cruise Sub series makes it possible to set up a unique tourist operation that will create unforgettable memories.

  • DOUBLE BUBBLE ADVANTAGE

SITUATIONAL AWARENESS

Reality vs. render, real depth ratings, next generation, most spacious, double bubble design.

Incorrect claims about single bubble designs and their level of comfort are often encountered. Our award-winning Cruise Sub 7 offers the largest interior volume in the industry with 6,840 litres of interior volume – making it the most spacious and comfortable 7-seat submersible on the market. All passengers share the same unique, undisturbed and undistorted view in every direction. The passenger seats in each sphere are mounted on a revolving platform that can turn to face any direction to achieve the best view. Single bubble high capacity designs are far less versatile and struggle with positioning all passengers with an equal view and sufficient comfort.

Pilots in the Cruise Sub series enjoy optimal first-hand visual awareness in all directions. Each Cruise Sub is equipped with advanced assistance technologies that enhance situational awareness – even in the most demanding environmental conditions. This includes short- and long-distance obstacle detection using sonar, accurate altitude (distance to seabed) readings, a 360-degree camera, and a USBL navigation system showing the exact position of the submarine. The three smart-technology information screens in front of the pilot present all available input, providing a precise picture of the sub’s location and immediate surroundings. This advanced level of enhanced situational awareness can only be found in the exclusive line of U-Boat Worx submersibles.

Other companies attempt to wow their potential clients with striking artists’ impressions and unproven concepts. We use well-researched prototypes to build and develop market-ready, tried and tested subs which our clients can totally rely upon. We are the industry leader as a result of many years of inhouse innovation and expertise. Our track record has provided our legacy, so don’t be fooled by shiny renders and ridiculous claims.

When designing a submersible, there are numerous safety factors to be considered. One of them is design temperature at depth. U-Boat Worx utilizes high margins of safety to ensure its clients can dive to the advertised depth in any part of the world. Our submersibles are certified with a conservative depth-rating, meaning you will be able to dive anywhere in the world up to the full depth, without temperature limitations. This will guarantee you’re able to dive in the Pacific, Red Sea and Caribbean to the full advertised depths. Competitors are known to advertise depth ratings based on a less favourable temperature rating. Meaning in warmer parts, like the Red Sea the acrylic won’t be able to go the full “advertised” depth.

The award-winning Cruise Sub series is the next generation of submarine technology, years ahead of the competition. This multi-passenger submersible provides passengers with the safest, most luxurious, and spacious interior available. The Cruise Sub series is the most ruggedised submersible in the market today, capable of diving in the most extreme of conditions and with 350% power increase over other current generation models. With an effective power-range of 62 kWh, you can plan multiple dives or longer dives with confidence. The generous configuration and premium features in the Cruise Sub series evoke a feeling of spacious freedom while the engineering ensures a diving comfort only found in the exclusive line of U-Boat Worx submersibles.

Sure, having an exquisitely-designed interior adorned with high-quality materials and beautiful finishes is one of the exclusive features only found in the Cruise Sub Series. Still, anyone who understands what true luxury is, knows that having space is equally important. Besides giving all our passengers a front row seat to the action, we designed our Cruise Sub around our passengers. Due to its exclusive spacious interior design, the passengers in the Cruise Sub series will have more leg space, more headroom and more personalised space not found anywhere else in the industry.

Image

The Cruise Subs utilise U-Boat Worx’ latest Pressure-Tolerant Lithium-ion battery system. This new battery technology offers up to 100% more capacity than traditional private submarines. A total capacity of 62 kWh allows the Cruise Sub series to extend mission time and minimize operational limitations. Abundant power has made it possible to apply more and stronger thrusters on our Cruise Subs. Speed both on the surface and underwater are important to keep the sub on course and in position. Another advantage is that greater depths can be reached in record time. The Cruise Sub series is without peer.

With the Cruise Sub series, we have aspired to create the ultimate in luxury interior design. When onboard a Cruise Sub, guests enjoy exhilarating views from a sumptuous chair in a comfortable air-conditioned environment with variable airflow, adjustable from each seat. You can also enjoy music from a hi-fidelity Bluetooth sound-system and even chill your favourite drinks in a cold-storage box.

The exceptional architecture of the Cruise Sub with its two large acrylic spheres offers an incomparable immersive dive experience. All passengers share the same unique, undisturbed and undistorted view in all directions. Passengers are safely and comfortably surrounded by the deep sea. The passenger seats in each sphere are mounted on a revolving platform that can turn to face any direction in order to experience the best view.

A distinctive feature of the Cruise Sub series is omni-directional movement. Four vectored horizontal thrusters allow for forward and transverse sailing capabilities. The interior can rotate to match the sailing direction so every passenger has the best view possible.

To experience the underwater world in the optimal way, one of U-Boat Worx’ design priorities has always been the clearest view. To ensure this, our remarkably clear fully acrylic pressure hull has been positioned at the front of the submersible, providing an unobstructed view in every direction, unimpeded by ballast tanks, batteries and other components.

Image

Freeboard is the height between the hatch and the waterline. The Freeboard Extender is a sliding barrier that increases the distance between the water and the hatch opening. It simultaneously allows for the submarine to be operated in rough conditions and be stored in low-height garage spaces.

The Safety Buoy is characteristic for U-Boat Worx submersibles. When released it marks the position of the submarine on the surface. The safety buoy of the deep-diving Cruise Sub models also sends a signal to the mother ship. The Dyneema Rope that connects the buoy with the submersible measures 1.5 times the operating depth of the submersible.

The MDP feature prevents the pilot from diving deeper than the submarine’s maximum operating depth. In case the submersible should ever find itself too deep, this safety feature will automatically raise the sub until it is once again within its certified depth.

Image

Space for all

When designing the Cruise Sub series, U-Boat Worx followed these key guidelines: safety, performance, visibility and comfort. Available in different seating arrangements, all with rotating seats so everyone can sit front row.

Revolving interior

Distinctive features of the Cruise Sub series include an optimal forward and transverse sailing capability, a revolving interior that can face the most ideal direction for unobstructed viewing, and a substantial payload for passengers or mission-specific equipment.

MANTA Controller

Marlin controller, auto-heading, omni-directional operation.

Each sphere features a revolving seating platform, which allows passengers to have the best view possible regardless of the direction the submarine is travelling. This design feature allows everyone to enjoy an unencumbered view and first-hand experience of deep exploration diving.

Pressure-Tolerant Battery system

The Pressure-Tolerant Battery System houses the batteries and electronics in oil-filled pressurised enclosures. The use of pressure-resistant components reduces the size and weight of the submersible, particularly on the deep-diving models.

Lithium-ion Battery Technology

The latest in Lithium-ion battery technology is used to give our submersibles the ultimate performance, lowest weight, smallest footprint, and best endurance. The Lithium-ion Battery System can be quickly recharged and is maintenance-free.

The MANTA Controller allows for pinpoint precision manoeuvring. The intuitive controls permit for supervised passenger steering, offering passengers an even more exciting dive experience. The controller also provides quick access to intelligent pilot assistance features such as Auto-heading and Auto-depth.

Initially developed to make launch and recovery effortless and safe, the MARLIN Controller is a wireless remote that can navigate the submarine on the surface. Once the submarine is in the water, the controller can be used to steer it away from the support vessel without a pilot inside. The MARLIN Controller can also be used to keep the submarine in position above a dive site, while the pilot assists with passenger embarkation.

With Auto-depth engaged, the submersible will hold steady at its current depth. When applying vertical thrust, the function will automatically disengage and seamlessly respond to the pilot’s commands. This function forms part of the intelligent pilot assistance features.

When Auto-heading is activated, the submersible will automatically hold its current heading, whether following a course or facing an object of interest. This function forms part of the intelligent pilot assistance features.

The U-Boat Worx Information System (UIS) gives the pilot direct access to all relevant information on a clear touchscreen display. This PLC-based network of sensors ensures the right information is provided at the right time. The UIS makes diving effortless.

Apart from the basic forward, reverse, up and down movements, the submersible can also move laterally. Lateral movement greatly optimises object approach, view, and dive efficiency.

MAXIMUM DEPTH PROTECTION (MDP)

Drop weight, deadman's switch (dms), safety buoy, dnv certification, freeboard extender.

This weight can be manually released from within the submersible to increase the buoyancy of the submarine and return it to the surface.

A Pinger gives out a pulse that can be received on the surface. With the receiver unit, you can pinpoint at all times the exact position of the submarine when submerged.

This DMS safety system will automatically resurface the submersible in the unlikely event that the pilot becomes incapable of controlling it. The pilot needs to acknowledge the DMS every 10 minutes, otherwise it will initiate the ascent procedure.

The Safety Buoy is characteristic for U-Boat Worx submersibles. When released it marks the position of the submarine on the surface. The safety buoy of the deep-diving C-Researcher models also sends a signal to the mother ship. The Dyneema Rope that connects the buoy with the submersible measures 1.5 times the operating depth of the submersible.

Certification by the world-leading classification society, DNV, requires each individual submersible to meet stringent and extensive rules and regulations, as well as pass a range of rigorous test and trials from design to final delivery. Overseen by independent surveyors, this is an independent verification of the safety of every U-Boat Worx submersible.

The World’s Most Expensive Yachts—Including Some That Cost Billions

By Brett Berk

most expensive yachts

Though superyachts are already among the most costly consumer items available, the prices of the most expensive yachts in the world are still astounding. In recent decades, those with money to burn have settled on these floating palaces as an ideal locus for demonstrating their prosperity, and, as such, the global luxury yacht industry is undergoing a golden age. The world’s ĂŒberwealthy think of their motor yachts as toys, and they’re constantly trying to outdo each other in scale, design, amenities, materials, and sheer profligacy.

Knowing this, what features does it take to own one of the most expensive yachts in existence? And how much do these opulent vessels actually cost? To that end, AD has compiled a list of the five priciest superyachts currently out on the water. As with many things connected to the very wealthy, details are shrouded in secrecy—often intentionally—to shield the assets from taxation or seizure, or to protect privacy.

Below, dive into the five reportedly most expensive yachts in the world.

5. Dubai ($400 million)

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Yacht and Boat

This 531-foot yacht is reportedly owned by United Arab Emirates Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai. Though it was originally planned for another Middle Eastern potentate, Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei, he suddenly voided the contract in 2001. With exteriors designed by Andrew Winch and interiors by Platinum Yachts, this German-built Blohm + Voss vessel features several Jacuzzis, a pool inlaid with handmade mosaic tiles that is reportedly large enough to hold 115 people, a circular staircase, a discotheque with an appropriately sized dance floor, squash courts, a movie theater, a dining room for 90 guests (the other 25 presumably have to eat in the pool?), a helipad, and a submarine.

4. Topaz ($527 million)

most expensive yacht

Resembling a stealth bomber, this 483-foot ship is reportedly owned by Russian fertilizer and coal oligarch Andrey Melnichenko. With exteriors by Tim Heywood Design Ltd. and interior designs by Terence Disdale Design, this German-built LĂŒrssen Yacht features a 2,500-square-foot primary bedroom, six guest suites (with moveable walls so they can be transformed into four grand staterooms), glassware and tableware fashioned from French crystal, a helicopter hangar, a 30-foot speedboat tender, and three swimming pools, including one with a glass-bottom dangling menacingly above a disco.

3. Azzam ($600 million)

most expensive yachts

This 590-foot ship is currently thought to be the largest private yacht in the world and one of the fastest, with a top speed of 35 miles per hour. To achieve this immense scale and speed, it required a pair of gas turbines and two stratospherically potent diesel engines, rendering it very difficult to build. It is reportedly owned by a member of the royal family of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. With exteriors by Nauta Yacht and interiors by French decorator Cristophe Leoni, this yacht was also built by LĂŒrssen in Germany. The vessel is set apart by its early 19th-century Empire-style veneered furniture, as well as its state-of-the-art security systems, including a fully bulletproof primary suite and a high-tech missile deterrence capabilities.

2. Eclipse ($1.5 billion)

most expensive yachts

In addition to being the second-costliest, this 533-footer is thought to be the world’s second-largest private yacht. Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich , the ship was claimed to be located in Turkey and may be impounded as part of the United Kingdom’s sanctions against Russia. Designed by Terry Disdale and built by Blohm + Voss, it features two-dozen guest cabins, two swimming pools, two helipads, and multiple hot tubs. For privacy and security reasons, it hosts a missile detection system, bulletproof windows in the primary bedroom and on the bridge, an anti-paparazzi shield, and, when all of that fails, a mini-submarine that can take a few VIPs 164 feet under the ocean’s surface.

1. History Supreme ($4.8 billion)

History Supreme has never actually been seen in a major port, and rumors suggest that the yacht may not be real and instead just a publicity stunt. Reportedly owned by Malaysia’s richest man, Robert Kuok, and designed by Stuart Hughes in the UK, the yacht is only a paltry 100 feet long. Its worth is said to be derived from its lavish finishes, including a statue constructed from genuine Tyrannosaurus rex bones, a liquor bottle embedded with an 18.5-carat diamond, and a primary bedroom with one wall made from meteorite and another from a 24-karat gold Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium. If you see it somewhere, let us know.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is Jeff Bezos’s yacht?

Most Expensive Yachts

This is why people like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos work to keep their yachts out of the public eye. Though we are not including Jeff Bezos’s yacht, Koru (Maori for “coil”), in this list because it is a sailing yacht and thus excluded from the realm of these motor yachts, it created controversy in the Netherlands when its presence became known. Jeff Bezos’s abided the $500 million price tag of Oceanco, the Dutch custom yacht builder, to create the 417-foot megayacht. But when the company, at Bezos’s behest, requested that a local bridge be dismantled to make way for its gigantic mast on its journey from the shipyard, public sentiment turned against the cento-billionaire, and Oceano shelved its request. Maybe a port like Monaco would be more accommodating?

Also not on this list is the world’s largest private yacht, reportedly owned by Alisher Usmanov. Though size and cost typically scale in the world of superyachts, this is not always the case (see #1 in this list.) Also, Somnio, the 728-feet dream-monikered yacht liner that tops our list of the world’s largest private yachts , isn’t quite done being constructed. And it is not, like most of the largest superyachts, privately owned by one individual or family—it’s a kind of floating condo, with 39 eight-figure homes available to potential owners solely by invitation.

What is submersible tourism? The Titanic expedition, explained.

How common are deep-sea expeditions like the Titan’s? Where else do submersibles go?

submarine super yacht

Seeing the wreck of the Titanic firsthand is a journey.

One must board a submersible vessel about the size of a minivan built to withstand the pressure of descending nearly two and a half miles into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean . It takes about two hours to reach the sunken ship and another two to get back to the surface, plus time for exploration.

And even with a price tag of a quarter of a million dollars, there has been no shortage of people with interest for such an adventure. Philippe Brown, founder of the luxury travel company Brown and Hudso , said there’s a long wait list for the OceanGate Expeditions submersible experience at the center of the world’s attention. The vessel, called the Titan, vanished Sunday in the North Atlantic with five onboard , triggering a wide-reaching search mission that ended Thursday, when the Coast Guard said a remotely operated vehicle discovered debris from the vessel on the ocean floor. Pieces of the submersible indicated it had imploded in a “catastrophic event," Coast Guard officials said. A spokesperson for OceanGate said the pilot and passengers “have sadly been lost."

For the world’s richest and most intrepid travelers, a submersible trip is not so far-fetched, says Roman Chiporukha, co-founder of Roman & Erica, a travel company for ultrawealthy clients with annual membership dues starting at $100,000.

“These are the people who’ve scaled the seven peaks, they’ve crossed the Atlantic on their own boat,” Chiporukha said. The typical vacation of the ultrawealthy, like a beach getaway on the Italian Riviera or St. Barts, “really doesn’t do it for them,” he added.

That description fits tycoon Hamish Harding , who was among the five people on Titan. An avid adventurer who’s thoroughly explored the South Pole and the Mariana Trench, Harding was also on the fifth spaceflight of Blue Origin , the private space company founded by Jeff Bezos, who owns The Washington Post.

Harding and the Titan journey represent the extreme end of the submersible tourism industry, which has been growing in popularity since the 1980s. Ofer Ketter , a longtime submersibles pilot and co-founder of SubMerge , a firm that provides consulting and operations of private submersibles, says such deep-sea journeys are rare in comparison to those in more tropical locations. For example, the luxury tour operator Kensington Tours offers a $700,000, 10-day yacht trip that includes a 600-plus-foot dive in a submersible in the Bahamas to explore the Exumas ocean floor.

Here’s what else to know about the industry.

Deep water, high pressure: Why the Titanic sub search is so complex

Missing Titanic submersible

The latest: After an extensive search, the Coast Guard found debris fields that have been indentified as the Titan submersible. OceanGate, the tour company, has said all 5 passengers are believed dead.

The Titan: The voyage to see the Titanic wreckage is eight days long, costs $250,000 and is open to passengers age 17 and older. The Titan is 22 feet long, weighs 23,000 pounds and “has about as much room as a minivan,” according to CBS correspondent David Pogue. Here’s what we know about the missing submersible .

The search: The daunting mission covers the ocean’s surface and the vast depths beneath. The search poses unique challenges that are further complicated by the depths involved. This map shows the scale of the search near the Titanic wreckage .

The passengers: Hamish Harding , an aviation businessman, aircraft pilot and seasoned adventurer, posted on Instagram that he was joining the expedition and said retired French navy commander Paul-Henri Nargeolet was also onboard. British Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his son, Suleman, 19, were also on the expedition, their family confirmed. The CEO of OceanGate , the submersible expedition company, was also on the vessel. Here’s what we know about the five missing passengers.

Oceangate Titanic submarine: Doomed billionaire ignored ominous warning about tragic dive

A British billionaire adventurer was warned by his expert friend "not to go anywhere near the Titan submarine" - but had a "false sense of security" from breaking a Guinness World Record.

Hamish Harding, 58, and famed explorer Victor Vescovo had previously dived to the lowest point of the Mariana Trench off Micronesia in the Pacific Ocean in a two-person submersible back in March 2021.

In June 2022, Harding, a billionaire adventurer who held three Guinness World Records, including the longest duration at full ocean depth by a crewed vessel, went into space on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket.

The pair attempted to break a Guinness World Record on March 5, 2021, for the greatest distance travelled at Full Ocean Depth, which Victor believes gave him a "false sense of security."

They successfully became the first two people in history to dive to the depths in a 12-hour journey that involved four hours of crossing the deepest point of the earth (6.8miles) underneath the Pacific Ocean. Their mission was to search for evidence of human pollution at the base of Challenger Deep, as well as explore deep-sea species.

"We travelled the longest distance ever in one trip at the bottom of Challenger Deep, the deepest place on Earth," Victor told The Mirror . "Also on that dive, we stayed down on the bottom longer than anyone ever had, four hours and fifteen minutes. To my knowledge, no one since has ever made a dive that covered that distance, that deep, or stayed down there that long. Hamish and I did that together. It was an intense dive.

In a previous interview, Mr Harding said the trip had been on his "bucket list for some time" and that it was an "easy decision. He told Superyacht Investor before the dive: “ It has been on my bucket list for some time, so it was an easy decision.

“There is no plan B, but I trust the team and the technology and I don’t really get scared at this type of thing.”

And now Victor believes the Challenger Deep dive may have given the Brit a "false sense of security" after he warned him not to get on the Titan.

He exclusively told The Mirror: "I was really disappointed because he didn't take my advice to not go. I sometimes wonder if his dive with me to Challenger Deep - nearly three times deeper than Titanic - gave him a false sense of security that all submersibles were all, more or less, equally safe. They aren't."

The expedition, which suffered a catastrophic implosion, was led by OceanGate, making its third voyage to the Titanic, which struck an iceberg and sank in 1912, killing all but about 700 of the roughly 2,200 passengers and crew.

OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush had previously defended the safety of his submersible but said nothing is without risk. “What I worry about most are things that will stop me from being able to get to the surface — overhangs, fish nets, entanglement hazard,” he said, adding that a good pilot can avoid such perils.

Although his background is in aerospace and technology, Rush founded OceanGate Inc. in 2009 to provide crewed submersibles for undersea researchers and explorers.

Victor believes he "failed" to convey to Hamish just how different the Titan was from the DSV Limiting Factor submarine used to go the Pacific Ocean.

"I failed to convey to him just how radically different the Titan was from the Limiting Factor and the great risk he was taking. Maybe he would survive, like previous divers had, but the sub was getting weaker, not stronger, with each dive."

Victor Vescovo warned Brit adventurer Hamish

Carl Allen and other notable explorers were honored with awards at the YCM Explorer Awards in Monaco ... [+] recently

I first met Carl Allen after hurricane Dorian had ravaged the Bahamas. He’d just donated the use of his industrial-grade 182-foot-long Yacht Support Vessel AXIS to facilitate significant personal hurricane relief efforts in the Abacos.

During that first meeting I was impressed and inspired by how much Allen and his family care about the Bahamas. But I was also intrigued and wondered why a successful American businessman would need such a serious support vessel in the Bahamas? Back then, all he would say was
“We like to search for stuff underwater.”

Carl Allen holds the award he received at the YCM Explorer Awards along side his son Thomas (to his ... [+] right), adventurer Mike Hom (to his loft) and his son Carl Jr. in Monaco

Since then I found out what he was searching for. Turns out he and his Allen Exploration team have found and recovered a significant collection of priceless artifacts from the Spanish shipwreck Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas which sank in 1656 off the northern Bahamas.

Great care is being taken with all artifacts that will be displayed in the new Bahamas Maritime ... [+] Museum.

The shiny 5-foot, 9-inch-long solid gold chain that weighs nearly two full pounds usually gets the most attention. But that’s only one piece. Other priceless and historically significant discoveries they’ve made include: a gold pendant with the Cross of Santiago, second gold pendant that features a Cross of St. James over a large Colombian emerald, silver bars weighing up to 60 pounds, hundreds of silver and gold coins, numerous loose gems, and countless other artifacts including weapons and pottery.

And the cool thing is since his Allen Exploration team has not only found lots of priceless artifacts, they’ve also built the Bahamas Maritime Museum in Freeport, Grand Bahama to conserve, study and share their discoveries with the world.

Carl Allen uses his 182-foot-long Yacht Support Vessel AXIS a Triton personal submarine among other ... [+] tools to hunt for treasure in the Bahamas.

So, I wasn’t surprised when I heard that he and his Allen Exploration team had been nominated to win an award to be presented by The Explorers Club in collaboration with Yacht Club de Monaco during the club’s 13 th Environmental Symposium held in Monaco earlier this year. And frankly, I wasn’t surprised when his Serene Highness, Prince Albert II of Monaco presented Allen with the Explorer Award in Adventure and Environmental Ethics in a ceremony highlighting the intersection of adventure and environmental stewardship.

The Bahamas Maritime Museum the the Bahamas will showcase some of the artifacts that have recently ... [+] been recovered from the Maravillas.

The way Allen and his team have worked with the Bahamian government to find, recover, study, conserve and share such important historical artifacts with the world shows just how powerful public-private partnerships can be when it comes to underwater exploration and conservation.

“We are immensely proud to receive this recognition from the Yacht Club de Monaco and Prince Albert II,” said Carl Allen. “Our work in The Bahamas reflects our dedication to uncovering the past and preserving our marine environment for future generations.”

The award underscores Allen Exploration’s commitment to ethical exploration practices that respect historical significance and environmental integrity. Their efforts go beyond recovery and include extensive education programs for Bahamian school children to promote maritime heritage.

Great care is taken with all the artifacts Allen Exploration discover

In fact, Allen and his team have always worked to redefine how treasure hunters are perceived because they’ve revolutionized the industry by forming a powerful public-private partnership with the government of The Bahamas. Their goal of leaving a legacy and creating opportunities for future generations takes precedence over any short-term monetary missions.

“I got a little emotional when Prince Albert presented the award to me,” Allen said. “I realized that the being honored that way shows that we are changing the perceptions about the type of treasure hunting that we are doing in the Bahamas and elsewhere. By working with the government, we’ve been able to save artifacts that will eventually turn into sand they are just left where they sank. And better still these artifacts can make a positive difference for the Bahamas and the world.”

Carl Allen and his wife Gigi celebrate the opening of the Bahamas Maritime Museum with Bahamas Prime ... [+] Minister Philip "Brave" Davis and other dignitaries

Carl Allen’s dedication to adventure and environmental ethics is also evident in his stewardship of the island Walker’s Cay . Allen purchased the island in 2018 and pledged to return the ‘Northern Gateway of The Bahamas’ to its former glory. His redevelopment plan promotes sustainable tourism, marine research, and the protection of Walker’s Cay National Park.

Congratulations Carl. And honor well deserved!
