How to plan and book a yacht charter

Once you have made the decision to embark on a luxury yacht vacation you will need to consider all the different elements that will make up your charter. from the type of yacht, to destinations and activities, planning a charter is a highly personalised process aided by the expert advice and handling of a charter broker. it is important to start planning well in advance of your vacation so that you are given enough time to create a truly unforgettable experience tailored specifically to the needs and expectations of you and your guests., choosing a yacht.

With a huge variety of spectacular charter yachts available, all offering an array of luxury amenities, accommodation and toys, you will need to consider what type of charter you are looking for and also the activities you intend to experience whilst you are on board. Explore our extensive guide to the world’s luxury charter fleet , browsing through images and searching by type, toys, tenders and facilities to get a feel for what is suitable to your needs. Whether you want to go on an extreme voyage on board an expedition yacht , experience the true essence of the sea on a sailing yacht , indulge in the ultimate luxury of a motor yacht or host a corporate event , there are a variety of fantastic options open to you. You will also need to decide the number of guests who will be joining you in regards to the number and arrangement of staterooms that is required and also that everyone’s needs are met.

Contact a Charter Broker

An experienced yacht charter broker is there to do all the hard work for you, including dealing with contracts and costs to menu options, and the service is completely free of charge as the fees are paid by the owner of the yacht. All that will be required from you will be clear and concise details of the type of charter you are looking to experience, when and where you want to go and what yachts you are interested in. For more information on the benefits of using a yacht broker and how to find the right one for you, read our guide to Finding a Yacht Charter Broker .

Planning Your Itinerary

Once you have booked your charter, the next step is to start making your dream vacation into a reality by planning your tailor-made itinerary. Your yacht charter broker will offer their own suggestions from previous experience, but your own preferences are crucial to getting the most out of your vacation as possible. Whether cruising the glamorous coastlines of the Western Mediterranean over the summer or heading to the Caribbean for a winter break there are endless possibilities for travelling the world in style. Browse our destination guides and sample itineraries to get some ideas of where to go and what to while you are there.

Preferences Form

Once your charter booking has been confirmed you will receive a preference sheet which is to be completed and returned in advance of your vacation. It is a form detailing everything from travel reservations, food and wine preferences, guest list and any medical issues that allows your charter yacht and crew to be fully prepared to cater for your exact requirements. Your yacht charter broker will pass the form on to the Captain who can then assess it and take action to pre-book any required berths, arrange activities, order specific foods and brief his/her crew. It is this type of personalisation that makes a luxury yacht charter vacation unsurpassed in five-star service and comfort.

The Charter Agreement

The Charter Agreement is compiled by your broker and includes details of each component of your chosen charter, including the yacht, dates, intended destinations and cost, all of which will be discussed with you. The most commonly used Charter Agreement is provided by MYBA (Worldwide Yachting Association, formerly known as Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association) which operates under the Western Mediterranean Terms (WMT). Other types of agreements include the SEMT (Standard Eastern Mediterranean Terms) and the Caribbean Terms both with different variations. To read more about the various contracts applicable to yacht charters, read our detailed guide on Understanding Charter Contracts . This is also when the first payment will be required which is generally about 50 per cent of the fee but terms will need to be discussed with your charter broker before.

Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA)

APA is in addition to the charter fee and amounts to around 30% of the charter fee cost. This is to cover the cost of fuel, food and other provisions, such as special equipment. If you wish for a berth in port, or to attach your yacht to a permanent mooring, this additional cost should also be included in your APA. Berth and mooring fees vary depending on the port and season. For more information about what is included in the APA, go to our Understanding Charter Contracts page.

Final Payment

The final balance of the charter fee and the APA amount will be expected between one month to one week prior to you departing on your luxury yacht charter vacation.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht?

There are many things to consider and first time charterers can be left confused, that's why we've created a comprehensive guide to yacht charter prices (with a checklist).

charter cost explained banner

The good news: It’s easy to grasp the basics of yacht charter pricing. And with one of our experts in your corner, we can help you more accurately estimate the cost of your next once-in-a-lifetime vacation.

The cost of a yacht charter is dependent on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the charter destination, local taxes, and the base cost. (If the yacht has a celebrity owner, well that too, can add to the cost.)

Therefore, yacht charters have a wide range of base prices. That’s why charters can cost from $10,000 per week on smaller sailing yachts and catamarans, up to $150,000+ per week on the most luxurious motor superyachts.

What else can you expect to pay? This overview – a part of our planning resource, the Charter Advice Guide – offers an in-depth look at charter yacht costs.

Yacht Charter Price Structure: “All-Inclusive” vs “Plus Expenses”

In the world of yachting, two types of crewed yacht charters are available to you – “All-Inclusive” and “Plus Expenses” charter experiences. What do these terms mean exactly? Here’s a quick look:

  • All-Inclusive Yacht Charters – Some charters (mainly catamaran and monohull charters in the Virgin Islands) offer all-inclusive rates. That means rates are based on the number of guests, and they include all food and drink, water sports, and fuel costs. Dockage and taxes, though, are usually charged separately.
  • Plus Expenses Charters – Rates for larger motor yachts do not include running expenses, which must be paid separately. For these luxury charters, the base price is for the yacht only. Additional expenses, i.e. food, bar, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and other expenses, are charged separately. Most frequently, the running expenses are paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA, which is typically 35% of the base price; this is an amount that’s paid prior to the charter.

Our chart below offers a quick overview of what’s included in both of these types of charters.

Factors that Affect Yacht Charter Prices

Since charter yachts are privately owned, prices are set by the owner. This can explain, in part, the wide range of differences in price between boats of similar lengths. Yet, several other factors can significantly impact price, including:

  • The Yacht – The year the boat was built, the builder, previous owners, and the boat’s selection of water toys can also increase the cost of a yacht. Boats can also develop a reputation, i.e. the largest or most luxurious, or having a famous builder or previous owner. Reputation can also affect pricing.
  • Season – Prices typically increase in the high season – i.e. high summer in the Mediterranean or winter in the Caribbean – and decrease in low seasons.
  • Destination – Your charter destination also plays a role in charter cost. For example, prices increase in areas without large charter fleets (i.e. the Galapagos), whereas Bahamas yacht charters,   BVI charters , or Mediterranean yacht charter are priced more competitively.

Additional Costs Considerations on Yacht Charter

In addition to the cost associated with running the yacht and provisioning, there are a number of other costs that must be considered. These are the most significant:

Advanced Provisioning Allowance

The APA on Plus Expenses charters equals roughly 35% of the yacht’s base price. This is a fee that’s collected prior to charter, and it’s similar to an expense account the captain can access during the charter. At the end of the charter, you will receive a detailed accounting of your APA account, plus any unused APA funds in cash.

In the case of overages, you may be required to replenish the APA account during the charter. This can be done with cash, although many choose to set up accounts with their charter brokers , which can be accessed if requested by the captain.

Taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT)

Most boats – whether all-inclusive or Plus Expenses – will not include local taxes or a Value Added Tax into their charter rate. The charterer will be responsible for paying those taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination; here’s a look at some of yachting’s most popular destinations:

  • The Bahamas – Tax: 4% plus 10% VAT
  • BVI – Tax: between $6 and $16 per person per day, depending on the flag of the boat
  • Croatia – VAT: 13%
  • Florida – Tax: 6% for Broward County, 7% for Miami-Dade County
  • France – VAT: 20%, however, 10% can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
  • Greece – VAT: 12%
  • Italy – VAT: 22%, however 6.6% (over 24m) and 8.8% (under 24m) can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
  • Montenegro – NO VAT
  • New England – NO TAX
  • Spain – VAT: 21%
  • Turkey – NO VAT

Charterers can purchase cancellation and curtailment insurance – which is similar to traveler’s insurance. This insurance can help cover costs if a charterer must cancel or shorten the charter. Charter brokers can help you weigh insurance options, and often offer several different options.

Crew Gratuity

While crew gratuity is certainly not mandatory, it is recommended, particularly if you were truly impressed with your charter experience. In general, crew gratuity is roughly 15-20% of the base charter rate, which is handed to the captain at the conclusion of your charter.

Delivery Fees

While these fees do not apply on most charters, you may be asked to pay delivery costs if you are not chartering in the yacht’s normal cruising ground. In most cases, you will only be required to cover the fuel for the trip.

Additional Charter Cost FAQs

What are standard private charter yacht prices?

There are a number of factors that affect charter yacht pricing. However, on average, a week-long private yacht charter costs anywhere from $10,000 on luxurious sailing yachts and catamarans, and up to $150,000 for superyachts.

What affects charter yacht prices?

There are several things that influence how much your yacht charter will cost. The type of vessel, charter destination, length of trip, base cost, time of year, and local taxes all make a difference.

How much does it cost for a crewed vessel?

Charter yacht prices do increase when hiring a crew along with the boat. At Worldwide Boat, we offer two types of crewed charter experiences: all-inclusive and plus expenses. An all-inclusive charter yacht includes accommodation for all guests, food and drink, water sport activities, and fuel costs – dockage fees and taxes are charged separately. A plus expenses experience accounts for just the yacht’s base price. Things like food, drinks, fuel, dockages, taxes, and other expenses are charged separately and are usually estimated to be about 35% of the base price.

What’s included in all-inclusive boat charters?

At Worldwide Boat, your all-inclusive charter experience includes a diligent and friendly crew, water toys, food, drinks, fuel, water and electric services, and occasionally diving experiences.

What are some additional charter boat costs to consider?

After finding a base price you’re comfortable with and evaluating your package, you’ll also want to consider delivery fees, crew gratuity, insurance fees, taxes, and Advanced Provisioning Allowance rates. If you are responsible for these fees, your crew will handle the necessary transactions on your behalf.

What does it cost to rent a 100- foot yacht charter?

This depends on what type of vessel you’re looking at and how long you’ll need it for. The average weekly cost of a 100-foot sailing yacht is between $50,000-100,000. A weekly 80-foot catamaran charter runs around $40,000-100,000, and a week-long 100-foot motor yacht rental is anywhere between $50,000-80,000.

Does the price to rent a yacht change depending on what type of boat it is?

Yes. Worldwide Boat offers sailing yachts, catamarans, and motor yachts. All of these vessels have different capabilities, but there are other factors that determine the price beyond what type of boat you choose. The year the boat was built, owner, availability of water toys, onboard amenities, and the ship’s reputation can all change how much the ship is priced at.

When is the high season for yacht charters?

The price of a yacht fluctuates depending on the season. A Mediterranean yacht charter cost rises in the summer and drops in the winter, whereas Caribbean boat charter prices are high during the winter and lower in the summer months.

How does my destination affect charter yacht cost?

The more remote an area is, the more expensive it will be to charter a yacht there. That’s because prices go up in areas that have fewer boats. If you were to travel somewhere like the Galapagos, which isn’t a typical yacht destination, you’d pay more than you would if you were traveling to the Caribbean.

How much do I tip the crew when reviewing my yacht charter expenses?

It’s not required that you tip your crew, but it is recommended and appreciated. If you had an enjoyable experience it’s considered polite to tip your crew anywhere from 15-20% at the end of your charter.

How To Book a Yacht Charter - The short answer

Just let one of our charter brokers share their expertise with you, knowledge gained over the last twenty years. You will hear unbiased information on every available yacht in every cruising destination worldwide. Our specialty is timely, personal advice on how to book a yacht charter with crew. Regardless of your yacht size, budget, destination, or length of stay, we treat all clients with the same level of great service every time.

Our specialists will walk you through every detail and we are able to find and book all crewed charter yachts worldwide! We are have a proven track record who know the right questions to ask you so you book the perfect yacht for your vacation. The whole process is dictated by your input so that you remain comfortable, stress free, and excited about your upcoming vacation

The Long answer

You will ultimately need to choose the right charter broker, type of yacht, and itinerary to suit your needs. And this can seem quite complicated! However, once you get started in the right direction with a reputable broker, you will receive the advice you need to make the other decisions. We are an experienced unbiased company available to you at absolutely no cost.

Booking in Five Easy Steps

1. Choose a Yacht Charter Specialist. Find a specialist who makes you feel comfortable with the process and who willingly seeks your input. This is the best way to ensure you book the charter yacht that best matches your needs. Choose a specialist without ties to specific charter yachts; you want information on the whole range of options, not limited to a small "in-house" selection. They should be experienced and knowledgable so that you will feel confident about your booking. Of course we hope you would choose us.

booking a charter yacht

2. Select the Yacht and Destination. Browse our web site to start gathering information about all your yacht and destination options. You will choose between motor and sailing yachts as well as what part of the world you want to explore. Our specialists book many yachts worldwide each year and have extensive knowledge about what will work best for individual clients.

3. Fill Out Paperwork. Once the ideal yacht is chosen for the dates you want, it will be reserved with a yacht charter contract between you and the yacht owner. Booking a yacht charter is different from reserving a plane ticket or villa! A standardized contract is drawn up, which we simplify by explaining to you in detail. The signed contract and 50% deposit will prevent anyone else from booking the yacht.

4. Prepare to Travel. Prior to boarding the yacht, your charter specialist and the Captain and crew will prepare the yacht for your vacation. You will have filled out a preference sheet regarding food, wine, and activities (as well as your arrival/departure information). That way the yacht will be provisioned according to your preferred items. The Captain will prepare a draft itinerary for your vacation based on your thoughts and ideas, which you are encouraged to discuss via email or phone prior to departure.

5. Enjoy your Vacation! While on charter, the Captain and crew are obviously your primary point of contact for questions about activities, meals, etc. Your Captain and crew act as concierge for your land-based adventures and on board activities. We recommend discussing plans in advance whenever possible. Overall, a private charter means there is no fixed itinerary, and typically some plans change en route.

Furthermore, our specialists remain available seven days a week should you have any other questions or concerns while onboard (e.g. gratuity suggestions or activity substitutions). You will have your specialist's mobile number and their frequently-checked email address.

Renting or Chartering?

With the pandemic driving a boom in superyacht charters , more and more people are taking to the water for their first yachting experience. But while some superyachts can cost more than a million a week to charter, you don’t need to outlay seven figures for your own yachting vacation.

Wondering what else you need to know before stepping on board for the very first time? We’ve turned to experts in the yachting industry for their insider intel on how to charter a yacht like a pro—from how much it will run you, to where to go, and well beyond. Read on.

Do I need a charter broker, and how do I find one?

It’s a charter broker’s job to match you with the right yacht and crew—and then take the lead in planning the entire experience. Professional bodies such as MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association act as a database of industry-recognized professionals. But the best source for finding a charter broker is often your own network. “Building up a relationship with a charter broker is very important,” says Jacqui Lockhart, a Monaco-based broker at Camper & Nicholsons International . “If possible, look for a recommendation from a friend.”

Once you’ve found the right broker, communication with them will be key. “Take the time to be as detailed with your preferences, such as dietary requirements, likes and dislikes, and preferred activities, as possible,” says London-based broker Charles Crane of Edmiston . “This will give us and the crew the best information to make the charter a success and tailored to perfection.”

How much should I be prepared to spend?

“The entry point is around $40,000 for a week on a yacht 82-feet upwards that can sleep six people," says Lockhart. What can take first time charterers by surprise is that this isn’t an all-inclusive figure. “The charter fee covers the hire, the crew, the insurance—everything that’s linked to the yacht,” Lockhart continues. Anything specifically for the client is extra—including food and beverages, fuel, and dockage. As a rule of thumb, budget for an extra 30 percent on top of the baseline charter figure for these extras, which goes into a fund known as the Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA). At the end of the charter, it is also customary to tip the crew; between 10 and 20 percent of the charter fee is a guideline figure. There may also be Value Added Tax (VAT) to pay on the charter rate, depending on the country of embarkation.

At the smaller end of the charter fleet, more opportunity exists for single-cabin bookings rather than whole yacht charters. This year in the Caribbean , Sheila Ruffin of Soca Yacht Charters has launched a “Stranger on the Seas” package. Prices start at around $6,000 per person—all-inclusive—on catamarans between 48 and 60 feet. “This allows couples the opportunity to mix and mingle with other couples for an adventurous and social yacht charter on the Caribbean Sea,” says Ruffin.

What destinations are best suited to first-time charterers?

“For first-timers, I wouldn’t recommend a remote destination,” says Captain Kelly Gordon of Freddy , a 106-foot charter yacht based out of the Bahamas . “When it’s hard to get to, that eats up some of your valuable time and can also take some of the fun out of it.”

While yachts are heading towards unchartered waters such as Antarctica with increasing frequency, cruising grounds in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean are classic destinations for a reason. “For the first-time charterer in these locations, there will be more yacht options to choose from, proven cruising grounds with known and safe anchorages, well-connected and easy access hubs to ensure smooth passage to embark and disembark the vessel as well as the ability to source most provisions that guests may want,” says Crane.

The key ingredient? The crew.

Although much of the focus is on securing the right yacht, the secret to the success of a charter is its crew. “Put simply, the crew make the difference between a good charter yacht and a bad one,” says Crane. Today’s crew are increasingly versatile. “They may also be a diving or yoga instructor, personal trainer, fisherman, or sommelier,” he continues.

The crew also knows your cruising area better than anyone else. “Be sure to pick their brain on fun things to do. They often love the opportunity to come up with fun activities and games, whether for kids or adults,” says Lotte Barker-Hahlo, a London-based charter broker at Burgess .

The level of hospitality from crew on most yachts often convert first-time charters into repeat customers. “The attention to detail from the crew is unsurpassed by any other luxury holiday,” says Barker-Hahlo. “From the unpacking of your suitcase to being offered a drink before you’ve even realized you’re thirsty, it’s 24-hour care and service.”

Gordon says that much of the feedback she receives at the end of a first-time charter is why didn’t we do this earlier? “People are always surprised at how we take the time to get to know their needs before they have even arrived. We really do study those preference sheets!”

Think carefully about who else you want on board

Another important factor to a successful yacht vacation? Your fellow travelers. This is a specific type of vacation, which should narrow your list of invitees. “Strongly consider who you vacation with when chartering a yacht,” urges Ruffin. “Unlike other vacation options, yachts are very intimate and exclusive. Choose to share your water adventure with those you like and will enjoy on the water for a week or more.” Maybe, even for veteran yachties, that's the sagest advice of all.

How Much to Tip a Fishing Guide: Learn the proper tipping etiquette

booking a charter yacht

Table of Contents

Last Updated on June 19, 2024 by Boatsetter Team

When you go on a guided fishing trip there’s an advertised price, but there are other costs of a fishing charter and one that shouldn’t be overlooked is tipping the captain and/or mate. Just what an appropriate tip is will change with the situation, too, because some guides work alone, others work with a mate, and you may want to tip more or less depending on the level of service.

It’s important to differentiate between charters and guides at this point, because although there’s no set definition for either, most charter boats have mates who often work for tips and tips alone. Some larger charters that take out more people than the standard “six pack” crew of six may even have multiple mates. But captains who work alone and take out smaller parties, on the other hand, are usually referred to as guides.

Tipping a small boat fishing guide

As a general rule of thumb, the standard tipping etiquette you’d use in a restaurant applies to fishing guides. Anything under 15 percent of the cost of the trip would be thought of as a penalty for a poor experience, 20 percent would be for meeting expectations, and 25 percent would be a bonus.

Remember that if you rent a fishing boat with a captain, as far as tipping goes that still counts as hiring a guide or booking a charter. Although the terminology and the booking process may be a bit different, they’ll still be working to make sure you have a great day on the water and catch as many fish as possible.

Tipping on charters

fishing charter tipping

On charter boats working with a mate, the mate is usually (though not always) working just for the tip. The same rates apply, except that instead of handing the tip to the captain you’d give it to the mate or mates. When there are multiple mates it’s okay to hand the tip to one of them, as tips are generally pooled and split, but if you want to tip a specific mate extra because they worked particularly hard or were especially pleasant, be sure to tell them that and tip them separately from the rest of the crew.

The same goes for captains who do an especially good job; tip the mates separately, and then approach the captain. Also, know that in some cases the captain will still share their tips with the mate(s) or ask you to pass it on to them, but either way they’ll still appreciate the gesture.

When you’re planning a group charter where the cost of the trip will be shared, be sure to give everyone a heads-up about tipping ahead of time. People who don’t regularly fish on charter boats may not realize that tipping is expected, and many people don’t carry much cash these days in case they’re caught unaware.

Tipping guides and charters for the experience

tipping your fishing guide

It’s always important to remember that a guide or captain, no matter how good he or she may be at their job, can’t control the weather or whether the fish will bite. Either factor can contribute to having a disappointing trip, but that isn’t necessarily a reflection of how the person is doing their job. More important is attitude, how hard he or she works to try to make the trip a success, and honesty.

Did the captain and/or mate greet you with a smile, and stay positive no matter what? Did they race around the boat all day keeping the baits fresh and the lines set, even if the fish weren’t biting? If they’re a pleasure to be around and they give it their all, you can’t blame them for rough seas or slow fishing.

The very best captains may even give you a heads-up if the fishing is particularly slow or it will be uncomfortably windy and rough, and may suggest rescheduling. When this happens, remember that they’ve willingly given up their income for that day to help ensure your experience is a positive one — and when you do eventually go, you should bear that in mind when it’s time to tip them.

The bottom line ? Tipping fishing guides and charter boat crew isn’t any different from tipping in other venues. If someone has done their best and you’ve had fun, tip them accordingly.

While a yacht may be the first thing that pops to mind when you think of the ultra-wealthy, chartering one might not be as expensive as you think. When you're splitting the costs between several family members or friends you are paying for transportation and stay and it can make sense financially.

You can also  keep money in your wallet  by selecting an older vessel or taking charge of sailing yourself (hiring a crew always costs extra).

So let’s take a look at options that may be within reach for people who aren’t living paycheck to paycheck but aren’t brunching with the Kardashians either.

Editor's note: prices are subject to change and may vary depending on the time of the year.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

I Know How Much Below Deck Mediterranean Guests Pay To Be On The Show, and It's Not What You Think

  • Guests pay $65,000 for 3 days aboard a luxury yacht with crew, including meals and activities in popular locations.
  • Crew members on Below Deck Mediterranean claim to be underpaid compared to other Bravo reality stars like Housewives .
  • Guests must be willing to be on camera, pay a $15,000 tip upfront, and be vetted by Bravo before booking a trip.

Below Deck Mediterranean passengers are willing to pay big bucks in order to set sail with the crew on Bravo's popular reality docu-series.

The show follows a magnetic group of yacht crew members who aren't afraid to be filmed as they offer elite guests unique experiences at "a highly discounted rate of what the normal charter fee" for a motor yacht would be, according to Bravo's casting website. But even the slashed prices still cost groups tens of thousands of dollars.

In this article, we will share trip rates exclusively obtained by TheThings.com. Then, we will reveal how much the cast pockets from appearing in the franchise.

How Much Below Deck Mediterranean Guests Pay To Appear On The Show?

Excited fans who want to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience have to pay $65,000 for a group of eight to enjoy a filmed getaway, according to a casting email exclusively obtained by TheThings.com. This comes out to approximately $8,125 per person including the tip.

Guests on Below Deck Mediterranean (Season 9 Episode 1)

For over a decade, luxurious vessels have taken well-paying passengers to explore beautiful places like the Greek Islands, glorious Italian shores, and the stunning French Riviera. During season 10, a three-day excursion to Spain will be offered. It's scheduled to start filming in August 2024 and will wrap in the fall, according to the casting team assigned to pick the perfect people.

Bravo claims the $65,000 rate is cheaper than what the average traveler would pay for the same experience if the show were not being filmed.

According to the analysis by Windward Yachts, the weekly charter price for the same vessels used on Below Deck Mediterranean cost between $175,000 - $280,000.

Casting documents reveal the fee covers an economy roundtrip airfare for everyone, two nights in a hotel, three days on a luxury yacht, a private chef, food and alcohol on the yacht, 24 hour service and all "water toys."

Guests can also book their own airfare and be credited $1,200 per person, the casting email claimed.

The hefty fee includes a $15,000 prepaid tip (which comes to about $1,500 per crew member) but that number is as fluid as the sea because even though guests have to pay up early on, they can change the amount they decide to tip on the very last night.

Captain Lee Rosbach revealed on the Amy and T.J. podcast that guests were not charged during Season 1 of the original Below Deck show because the idea “had not been done before.” The uncharted waters allowed people to board for free. Unfortunately, after a series of no-shows, the show started having guests pay.

Usually, the guest who was in charge of booking the vacation hands an envelope with cash inside to the team once the journey has come to a close. In rare instances, the crew can be left empty-handed.

In season 1, the team didn't get a tip because second steward Kat Held found white powder and a rolled dollar bill while cleaning the cabins and Captain Lee was forced to follow maritime law and boot the guests off of the boat. If he didn't, the crew's credentials could have been at risk and who knows what would have happened to the franchise?

Kat spoke about the incident on camera at the time.

"A lot of us put years and years into getting our licenses. The smidgen of anything illegal will take that away from all of us."

Payment isn't the only obstacle for potential guests. If folks want to enjoy a "unique and unforgettable experience" they have to be willing on camera and be vetted by the network before jumping aboard.

Every single person being considered for the show has to be interviewed via video chat and approved by Bravo before they can officially board.

If guests are lucky enough to be picked, they may be asked back. That happened to Linda P. Jones, who appeared on season 1 of Below Deck Mediterranean during a girls' trip with friends. She shared her experience in a blog post.

"We’ve been contacted and invited to come back on Below Deck Med every year since."

She claimed the "food was as good as everyone says" and she "ate every single bite of everything."

The casting team claims slots fill up fast, so if you don't sign up you may miss the boat on the opportunity.

Other spinoffs in the Below Deck franchise include Below Deck Adventure, Below Deck Down Under and Below Deck Sailing Yacht.

Below Deck Cast Members Claim To Be Underpaid

Cast members of the franchise have complained about payment for years, despite the hefty fees passengers pay for the experience.

Below Deck alum Eddie Lucas, who worked his way up from deckhand to First Officer over a handful of seasons, was very outspoken about how much cast members make in an interview with the New York Post in 2022.

"We are still not getting paid what people like the Housewives are making, which is a little frustrating because they’re not really working—they’re just going out to dinner and fighting."

In the interview, he added "we are the lowest-paid cast members" despite having to put in labor and obtaining specialized licenses for some positions just to even qualify for that type of work. Following his public criticism of the pay, he was not asked back on the show and will likely never return.

In an article published by Business Insider, some of the stars of the franchise made between $5,000 - $6,000 per month as captains earned nearly triple that amount.

Bravo's Real Housewives reportedly take home much more than Below Deck cast members. Fan favorites like Teresa Giudice, Porsha Williams and Bethenny Frankel were pocketing over $1 million per season as NeNe Leaks from The Real Housewives of Atlanta was reportedly the highest-paid housewife making $2.85 million per season.

Although the full rates of crew members are not known, Below Deck Down Under alum Laura Bileskalne, who was fired for fighting with co-workers, told the Miss Understood podcast in November 2023 that the workers receive "a very small" amount of money outside of tips.

The job alone can be pretty dangerous and other cast members from the Below Deck franchise have spoken out about pay after Eddie's comments went viral.

Below Deck Mediterranean alum Jessica More replied to a social media post with his quotes on the topic writing, "yep I see all facts in his statements."

In 2022, Below Deck Sailing Yacht alum Dani Soares commented on an Instagram fan page "Southern Charm makes 25k per episode ... I made less than that all season including tips."

Below Deck 's Captain Lee Rosbach weighed in on the topic during a taping for his podcast Salty With Captain Lee in January 2024 saying that $1,500 or $2,000 for a three-day charter was "pretty good money."

“As far as salaries go, what someone else makes is none of my business. I negotiate what I want and what I think I am worth. We either come to an agreement or we don’t and I leave."

But cast members have other ways to make money because, as always, reality television can launch some people into a world of new opportunities.

Captain Sandy poses for a photo during season 3.

Below Deck Mediterranean' s Captain Sandy has partnered with skincare companies like Niveda while the show's former chef Adam Glick went on to release a cookbook and have partnerships of his own.

New episodes of Below Deck Mediterranean airs every Monday on Bravo and can be streamed on Peacock the next day.
