Record fleet set for Cabbage Tree Island Race

A record fleet of 67 boats is expected to take on the Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore’s Cabbage Tree Island Race on Friday 3 December.

The 172 nautical mile race will provide an early preview for the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, with 66 of the 67 entrants stepping up their preparations for the trip south. It will serve as a qualifying passage for much of the Rolex Sydney Hobart fleet.

Three 100-foot super maxis will challenge for Fully-Crewed Line Honours, with an exciting showdown set between Peter Harburg’s Reichel/Pugh 100   Black Jack   (skippered by Mark Bradford), Christian Beck’s Juan-K 100   LawConnect   and Seng Huang Lee’s Dovell 100   SHK Scallywag 100   (skippered by David Witt).

Philip Turner’s Reichel/Pugh 66   Alive   (skippered by Australian Offshore Sailor of the Year, Duncan Hine) – the overall winner in the 2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart – is part of a strong contingent of 60-80 foot boats.

David Griffith’s JV62   Whisper   will look to continue her strong form after winning Fully-Crewed Line and Overall honours in the Flinders Islet Race, as will Anthony Johnston’s Reichel/Pugh 72   URM   – the Fully-Crewed Line Honours winner from the Bird Island Race.

Mark Richards – nine-times Rolex Sydney Hobart Line Honours winner as skipper of   Wild Oats XI   – will be at the helm of the Oatley family’s Reichel/Pugh 66   Wild Oats X .

Seven TP52s will challenge for Fully-Crewed Overall honours, in a prelude to the battle for the Tattersall Cup, including Matt Allen’s   Ichi Ban,   Sam Haynes’   Celestial , Damien Parkes’   Denali , Matt Donald & Chris Townsend’s   Gweilo , Craig Neil’s   Quest , Seb Bohm’s   Smuggler , and Gordon Ketelbey’s   Zen .

The start of the 2021 Cabbage Tree Island Race will be streamed LIVE on the   CYCA YouTube channel   and   CYCA Facebook page   from 1845hrs on Friday 3 December.

Sandy Farquharson and Rob Aldis’ DK 46   Khaleesi , Steve Capell’s Swan 65   Eve , Will Vicars' Hoek TC78   Oroton Drumfire , Ian Edwards’ Dehler 46   Wings , Mark Spring’s Beneteau First 45   Highly Sprung   and David Elliott's DK46   Old School Racing   will be among those pushing the TP52s on handicap.

Jules Hall’s J/99   Disko Trooper_Contender Sailcloth   heads in as favourite in the Two-Handed Division, following back-to-back overall wins to open the Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore.

Eight two-handed crews will gain more valuable ocean racing experience ahead of the inaugural Two-Handed Division in the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart: Crux (Carlos Aydos & Peter Grayson), Disko Trooper (Jules Hall & Jan Scholten), Kayimai (Michael Bell & Matt Bell),  Local Hero (Mark Ayto & Anto Sweetapple), Min River (Jiang Lin & Jean-Charles Ledun), Rum Rebellion (Shane Connelly & Graeme Dunlop), Salt Shaker (Peter Franki & Drew Jones), and Speedwell (Campbell Geeves & Wendy Tuck).

The Cabbage Tree Island Race is the third of four races in the 2021/22 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore, which culminates in the Rolex Sydney Hobart.

Matt Allen’s  Ichi Ban  leads the way in the  Fully-Crewed Pointscore  after winning the Bird Island Race overall and finishing second overall in the Flinders Islet Race. David Griffith’s  Whisper  is in second place, while the defending Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore champions on  Gweilo  are third.

Disko Trooper_Contender Sailcloth  leads the  Two-Handed Division , ahead of  Rum Rebellion  and  Salt Shaker  in joint second.

Friday’s race also features as the opener of the   Income Asset Management Australian Maxi Championship .

The inaugural regatta will see two divisions, Maxi and Mini Maxi, taking on up to four races from 3-7 December:

  • Cabbage Tree Island Race – Friday 3 December
  • Up to two passage races – Monday 6 December
  • SOLAS Big Boat Challenge – Tuesday 7 December

The winners of each division will be determined by a pointscore across those races.

The three super maxis –  Black Jack, LawConnect  and  SHK Scallywag 100  – make up the Maxi Division, while there are seven entrants in the Mini Maxi Division:  Alive, Moneypenny, No Limit, URM, Whisper, Wild Oats X  and  Willow.

Zen finds focus in tricky conditions to win Cabbage Tree Island Race

By  Cruising Yacht Club of Australia December 6th, 2021

Gordon Ketelbey’s TP52 Zen takes a huge “confidence boost” into the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, winning her final offshore hit-out before the great race – the Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore’s Cabbage Tree Island Race.

Three TP52s led the Fully-Crewed IRC standings after the 172 nautical mile race, with Zen just over three minutes ahead of Matt Allen’s Ichi Ban on corrected time, and Matt Donald & Chris Townsend’s Gweilo in third.

“To take out the final race before the Rolex Sydney Hobart is very special for us,” said Zen’s Sailing Master Shane Guanaria.

“For everyone, it’s a massive confidence boost. We had some trials and tribulations with the boat in terms of breakages over the last few years, so to get this result is a reward for the effort the crew puts in on and off the water.

“We think this is one of the most competitive IRC fleets in the world. There are some very talented and amazing sailors out there, and great teams.”

Zen got off to a strong start on Friday evening, chasing the mini maxis out of the Heads alongside Ichi Ban and Gweilo.

The three TP52s engaged in a tense battle on the way up to Cabbage Tree Island, riding the 25-26kt southerly until conditions got lighter towards Port Stephens.

Zen was within touching distance of Ichi Ban rounding the island, but lost ground on her two closest competitors around 40 nautical miles from the finish after getting stuck in a hole.

“Ichi Ban and Gweilo sailed out to a five-mile lead on us; we thought the race was done there,” Guanaria reflected.

“Then the southerly kicked in and quickly built to 18 knots. We know we have a very strong boat upwind, so we toughed it out, chipped away and got within two miles of Ichi Ban at the finish, which was close enough to get the win on handicap.

“Mentality played a huge role. The crew put in a huge effort; they were all power hiking for the last 45-50 minutes of the race, trying to get every second we could out of the boat.

“That was a huge effort having raced for over 16 hours in the conditions we had.”

What Guanaria describes as “the best Corinthian crew in the country” on Zen included three female sailors under the age of 25 –Clare Costanzo, Rebecca Gmuer-Hornell and Ruby Scholten.

Costanzo and Gmuer-Hornell will be an important part of the Zen crew for the Rolex Sydney Hobart.

“They all took on lead roles and did exceptional jobs,” Guanaria said. “Gordon has put an emphasis on bringing young sailors through and giving female sailors opportunities they probably wouldn’t get elsewhere.

“The crew is thankful to Gordon. We know we’re fortunate to have a boat like we do.”

White Bay 6 Azzurro stands tall

Shane Kearns’ White Bay 6 Azzurro was one of the smallest boats in the fleet, but she made a mighty impression.

The S&S 34 crossed the line at 0227hrs on Sunday after 1 day, 7 hours, 27 minutes and 53 seconds of racing, securing impressive results across all three handicaps.

White Bay 6 Azzurro was eighth overall in the Fully-Crewed IRC standings, just behind Wild Oats X, winning IRC Division 2.

She won Fully-Crewed ORCi honours and was second overall on Fully-Crewed PHS, behind Steve Capell’s Swan 65 Eve.

White Bay 6 Azzurro will once again look to challenge for a maiden Tattersall Cup in the Rolex Sydney Hobart if conditions suit the smaller boats, and is a favourite for divisional honours.

2021/22 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore

Matt Allen’s Ichi Ban continues to lead the 2021/22 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore after a third successive podium finish on IRC.

Ichi Ban – the 2018/19 and 2019/20 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore champion and two-time Tattersall Cup winner – finished second in the Flinders Islet Race and won the Bird Island Race.

The final race of the Pointscore is the Rolex Sydney Hobart.

LawConnect kept her nose in front throughout the Cabbage Tree Island Race - Andrea Francolini pic

LawConnect first home in Cabbage Tree Race

Christian Beck’s Juan-K 100 LawConnect laid down a marker in her return to offshore racing, winning Fully-Crewed Line Honours in the 2021 Cabbage Tree Island Race, the third race in the 2021/22 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore.

LawConnect takes the early lead in the 2021 Income Asset Management Australian Maxi Championship’s Maxi Division, ahead of Seng Huang Lee’s Dovell 100 SHK Scallywag 100, which was second over the line.

With Beck unable to race, Tony Mutter took the helm and got LawConnect off to an impressive start in gloomy conditions on Friday evening, with 10-15 knots from the SSW as the fleet of 65 boats jostled for position on Sydney Harbour.

LawConnect – formerly InfoTrack and Perpetual LOYAL – was quickest off the line and pulled away from Philip Turner’s Reichel/Pugh 66 Alive, SHK Scallywag 100 and David Griffith’s JV62 Whisper out of the Heads.

There wasn’t much to separate the two super maxis as they rounded Cabbage Tree Island, but LawConnect moved clear ahead on the return leg, averaging 11.4 knots throughout the race. She crossed the line in 15 hours, 20 minutes and 21 seconds.

Following LawConnect’s progress from his home, Beck joked: “I’m sick of this boat winning when I’m not on it, they’re making me look bad!”

Mutter was pleased with the sharpness of the crew as they build towards the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

“It was awesome, everyone was ecstatic with the win,” he said. “We’re really pleased and we know Christian is really pleased.

“We’re thankful to Christian for letting us race. We try and represent as best we can when he’s not there.

“A lot of effort has been put into the boat this year and we’re glad it looks like those changes have come through and made a significant improvement. We’re pleased with the extra performance.”

The Cabbage Tree Island Race provided a successful first hit-out for LawConnect’s imposing new bowsprit, believed to be the longest on a 100-footer in the world.

It was also a first test for two of the boat’s new sails, which arrived just hours before the race.

“It wasn’t the ideal preparation we wanted beforehand,” Mutter said. “We had to do a bit of scrambling to get some of the sails ready, but everyone was geed up and it seemed to help once we got going.

“We had up to five different sails to race pack beforehand, which took a considerable amount of time.

“I’m really impressed with the crew; they did an awesome job.”

LawConnect will be back on the water on Monday as the Income Asset Management Australian Maxi Championship continues.

The fleet will take on up to two passage races, before a showdown on Sydney Harbour for the SOLAS Big Boat Challenge on Tuesday 7 December.

The Income Asset Management Australian Maxi Championship’s inaugural Maxi and Mini Maxi champions will be determined by a pointscore across those races.

“We really need to be focusing on fine tuning our manoeuvres,” Mutter added. “That’s when you start doing damage on these big boats, so it’s about working on timing and techniques.

“Our focus is on the Rolex Sydney Hobart. We have to be mindful of looking after the gear and equipment, keeping it in a condition that’s suitable to be able to win that race. Having said that, once we get going in this Championship, all that goes out the window. We race hard and rely on the crew’s skills to keep the boat in one piece.”

Cabbage Tree Island Race to showcase Rolex Sydney Hobart talent

This Friday 4 December marks Race 4 of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s (CYCA) Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore, the Cabbage Tree Island Race. When the 51 crews line up on the Sydney Harbour start line, almost all of them will be sizing up their competition for the 2020 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race on Boxing Day.

Up front are the two super maxis, Peter Harburg’s RP100 Black Jack and Christian Beck’s Juan-K 100 InfoTrack. With a light north-easterly breeze forecast for the 1900hrs start, the nimbler Black Jack is expected to gain the early advantage, however a south-easterly change around midnight should see InfoTrack hunting them down in their preferred blast reaching conditions.

Nipping at the big boats’ heels is a strong cohort of 60-70 footers. Expect to see Sean Langman’s RP69 Moneypenny leading the way, closely followed by David Gotze’s RP63 No Limit and CYCA Director David Griffith’s JV62 Whisper. Fresh from the operating table, Whisper is sporting a brand new, deeper & lighter keel which the team hopes will give them the edge for the IRC crown.

Another team hungry for IRC honours is Matt Donald & Chris Townsend’s TP52 Gweilo who successfully clinched IRC, ORCi and PHS handicap victories in this race last year. Gweilo have been the team to beat so far this season as well, taking home the Bird Island Race victory earlier in the year, along with wins in many of CYCA’s Ocean Pointscore races.

A swathe of fellow TP52 teams join them in the pack, among them two-time Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race winner, Matt Allen’s Botin 52 Ichi Ban. They are currently hoping to become the first crew to claim the Tattersall Cup two years in a row since the Halvorsen brothers’ Freya in 1964 and ’65 and will be throwing everything at this race to reign supreme and stand in good stead come Boxing Day.

Making history once again are the intrepid teams of the Two-Handed Division, present in the Cabbage Tree Island Race this year for the first time ever. Rupert Henry’s J/65 Burning Palms took home Two-Handed line honours, IRC and PHS victories in the Bird Island Race but will face increased competition this time around.

In the circa 40-foot range, Rob Aldis’ DK 46 Khaleesi is the boat to beat, also posting a strong performance in the Bird Island Race. Carl Crafoord’s Cookson 12  Sail Exchange  will give them a run for their money though, as will Ron Forster’s Beneteau First 40 Ariel – both teams also faring well earlier in the year.

Be sure to catch all the action as it happens online on  bwps.cyca.com.au . Follow the race live via the  Yacht Tracker  and  Standings  pages and see the latest photos, videos and stories on the News page. You can also get social on CYCA’s  Facebook  or  Instagram  and join the conversation with #AudiCentreSydneyBWPS.
