Hello. I am going to be looking at a 1979 Glastron Spirit 28. It has been hard to find much info on them. General question is does any one know much about them and primarily is the mast deck stepped and on a pivot of some sort? Boat is one owner and in the water at a real good price. It would only be used on inland lakes and rivers. I have an Oday 22 which I love but of course am looking to go bigger. Thanks for any info. Russ & Donna - 1979 Oday 22 SV Tying The Knot

I used to sell these boats when they were in production and I have one used one for sale now. They are very decent sailing boats and I was particularly impressed at how straight it backed when under power. They were built by North American for Glastron. Their interior layout is similar to the very popular Islander 28, but in reverse. The mast just steps on deck and does not pivot. Unless, by pivot, you are wondering if it is hinged, which it is not. You need the help of a marina gin pole, etc.

Thanks so much. Just the info I was looking for. There are 2 bridges that I would need to get under at 35 ft. I see that the boat needs about 41 ft. Nice enough boat with owner asking $3500.00 with lots of extra stuff. Looks like a deal breaker to have to mess with lowering the mast. Thanks again for all the info. Learned a lot about this boat.

It sounds like this masthead rig will have a mast that you won't want to handle without a crane. It sounds like a sturdy boat with appropriate rigging. I wonder why this is a deal-breaker for you. Why not have the marina where it is located drop the mast for you, motor it to your destination and then have your marina step the mast again. If you want a trailer-sailer, I suppose this doesn't fill the bill. But I think you may be passing on a good opportunity over this issue. It looks like a darn good boat for the money, assuming it is in good condition.

thanks for the response. I have a trailer sailer-oday 22-love the boat -just looking for bigger. I do like the boat and have looked at it several times. Really good shape for its age. the problem is my marina is upstream and under 2 bridges that are 35ft and that boat needs 41 ft. So while I really want the boat-do I move to another marina-which I really do not want to do I like where I am-or set up a system to be able to lower the mast a little every time I want to go out to a better sailing area? The Spirit 28 finch is a moderate weight sailboat which is a reasonably good performer. It is very stable / stiff and has a low righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser. The fuel capacity is originally very small. There is a very short water supply range.

installing a new gas tank for my 28' boat

Hi, I have a 34 year old Spirit 28, with original tank and motor (yanmar2qm15) As any who has read my posts will know, I have had MUCH trouble since buying the boat in June with that engine. As it turns out, it was primarily dirty injectors and crappy fuel - fuel from a rusty old tank. In fact, there is so much rust from this tank the filters were filled with a fine red mud after only a few weeks of sailing. A friend has given me a new aluminium tank (approximately the same size, also a 20 gallon tank) and I am hoping to install it over the winter/spring as the boat is now on the hard. Unfortunately, it looks like the only way to get at the tank is to pull out the engine first - a formidable task. I have experience with car engines, but little with marine diesel engines. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks

The access will be less convenient and you've got to worry about scratching some cabinetry along the way, compared to pulling a car engine. This is a bit different as you have no intention/need to work on the engine itself.. otherwise I'd suggest removing peripherals like starters, manifolds, etc.. anything that will make the package smaller/lighter for shoehorning in and out. Also you probably needn't lift the engine fully out of the boat, if you have room to shunt it aside to the point that you can get at the tank. You may be able to rig a tackle off the boom to help move the engine around once you get the mounts and connections off. Wiring harness, fuel line(s), exhaust hose, prop shaft coupling and shift/throttle cables will be your major points of disconnect - some of which may not give way easily after all this time. Is the 'new' tank set up for diesel? ie do you have a fill (in the right place), a pickup line and a return line connection? And approx similar size, but how about shape? how will it sit in the current tank's location? I'd do some very careful measuring/investigation before starting to rip things apart. It would be fortunate indeed if all the fittings actually were going to work for you as is.. Also, don't finalize the engine alignment after you're done until the boat's floating again.. she's likely sitting differently on the pads than in the water. Best of luck!

One thing in your favour is that the 2QM15 does not have a return line back to the tank.

Should I add a drain valve to the bottom of the tank ? I'm told every three or four year department of transport (canada) ships have to have their deisel tanks drained and cleaned. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

Pull the engine to install the tank!!?!?!? Might it not be easier/cheaper to section the 'pit deck to install and fit it back in??

Hmm... I doubt cheaper, unless I mess up something. Someone else had mentioned cutting the cockpit floor to do this. But I'm not sure of the logistics... I wouldn't know where to begin Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

I too have a Spirit 28 with a 2qm15. The PO told me he pulled and painted the tank. Not sure whether he went out the Port side through the quarter berth, or starboard side through lazarette though. But I bet you can do it without pulling the engine. Russ

I'm going to look today at the wall to the quarter berth. It may be removable, I can't see the tank coming up through the lazarette without some chopping.

My quarter berth inboard wall is made of a couple plywood panels, which are screwed in place, and can be easily removed. I had them out a few months ago to replace my wet exhaust.

Diesel Fuel Tank Replacement Cal 2-29 Anyone have info on availability of replacement tanks for this boat? I'm planing to buy this boat and anticipating replacement of a tank with much surface rust. Phil

The one I have was bought second hand, but for a motorboat. I would shop around and look for a good deal, paying to have one fabricated will be pricey. Good luck with your boat!!! I am waiting till spring to install my tank, still haven't decided exactly how to go about putting it in.

My boat had an aluminum tank. It corroded and burst. I replaced it with a 'box-shaped' tank mounted under a starboard cockpit seat. The tank came from Moeller. Moeller Marine Online - Permanent Tanks The cross-linked polyethylene can never corrode, but I did have to fabricate a shelf for the new tank. I've used this style tank for several other projects and I'm happy with the results.

There was also a European Spirit 28 but they are not related, different companies and designers. The American one was built for a Glastron by North American Yachts in Texas.

Would a 28' glastron/spirit sailboat be a decent liveaboard?
Re: Would a 28' glastron/spirit sailboat be a decent liveaboard? Don't know the boat but sounds like it could be a nice liveaboard. 10' beam and 6'2" headroom are nice. Depending on how tall you are it can be tough to find standing headroom in a boat under 30'. It's a really nice luxury to have though.

SPIRIT 23
An earlier version was known as the NORTH AMERICAN 23. It was renamed after North American Yachts was sold off by powerboat manufacturer Glastron. The SPIRIT 23 was also available with a fixed keel (See Spirit 23K). Also available with either a standard coach roof or a lifting 'pop top'. Headroom with the "pop top" up = 6.17ft.
