This bold design represents a new state of the art in combining comfort and speed: it’s an ultra-high performance package capable of cruising at sustained speeds above 20 knots, yet has enough space to live aboard in genuine comfort.

persico 72 catamaran

Product Overview

The new foiling catamaran design is the result of Persico’s strategy to translate knowledge the yard gains from its work in aerospace, IMOCA 60 and America’s Cup spheres into very high performance cruising yachts. The structure is of high modulus prepreg carbon/Nomex, there’s an all-carbon interior, plus a Southern Spars rotating mast with Future Fibres’ ECsix and AEROsix composite standing rigging.

The boat is intended as a semi-foiler that can switch to full foiling mode, skimming 20cm above the water in appropriate conditions. The 7m-long righting moment foils are rake controlled and complemented by daggerboards for leeway control, plus T-rudders also with rake control. Design of the foils and flying system was done using the Gomboc VPP software that was instrumental in creating the AC75 foiling monohull and is now also widely used in the IMOCA class.

“The foil has the same purpose as the one used in the IMOCA class,” explains Ferdinand van West, lead designer of Morrelli and Melvin, “but it has been adapted to a catamaran and can be fully retracted.” The foils become effective in 9 knots of breeze and boat speeds well over 20 knots are predicted in just 13 knots of true wind.

Gunboat G4: is this the world’s first flying cruiser? She could do 40 knots on foils

When the Gunboat G4 launches this spring, she will be the most outrageous coastal cruiser-racer ever seen – and certainly…

In stronger conditions downwind speeds of 40 knots and an astonishing 26 knots upwind are expected. For a more comfortable ride and greater safety factor maximum speeds can be dialled down via a fully autonomous control system, which can gradually lower the hulls and decrease speed to a comfortable level set by the owner.

A further advantage for a cruising yacht is that draught with the foils raised is a mere 65cm (2ft 2in), though with the foils lowered this increases to 5.31m (17ft 5in).

Despite the boat’s speed potential, it is primarily intended as a very spacious luxury cruiser with all the associated systems including more than 500lt of refrigeration space, a pizza oven and a whopping 64,000 BTU (approx 19kW) of air conditioning. This is powered by twin variable-speed 20kW diesel Fischer Panda generators, which also supply hotel loads the 2kW solar array can’t cover.

Twin 25kW Torqeedo electric motors, allied to a 40kW BMW I3 battery, provide auxiliary propulsion at a cruising speed of 8 knots, with the generators available for use as range extenders if necessary.

Construction has already started in Persico’s new facility at the Italian port of La Spezia, with the boat scheduled for launch in summer 2024.

Revolutionising Speed & Luxury: Persico’s Cat 72 & Her Rotating Southern Spars Mast

persico 72 catamaran

Persico Marine has turned heads with the unveiling of Persico Cat 72, the ground-breaking foiling catamaran, designed by Morreli and Melvin, and due for delivery in 2024.

The 22m yacht has harnessed America’s Cup simulation software to foil 20 centimetres out of the water and up to speeds of 40 knots, with luxury worthy of the most comfortable cruisers on the water. This level of technology onboard a yacht that’s built for both performance and comfort will push the boundaries of what a racer/cruiser can be – representing a quantum leap in a wider trend among owners who are now seeking both elegance and blistering speed.

RIGGED TO PERFORM

This acceleration in the performance catamaran space (and in the high-performance cruising market at large) has meant that boat yards are increasingly turning to technologies from the world of grand-prix racing.

Looking to harness the expertise of the market leaders, Persico enlisted Southern Spars to design and manufacture Cat 72’s composite rig. Producing rigs for almost all the yachts at the highest level of racing, and for the most eminent superyachts in the world, Southern Spars was the obvious choice, especially as Persico turned to the challenge of foiling.

Using their experience of designing rig packages for the foiling AC75s of the America’s Cup, as well as several trickle-down projects like the Mills 60 Flying Nikka, Southern Spars’ team of experts designed a rotating wing mast to improve aerodynamic efficiency and control sail shape. The mast’s custom specification delivers the exact degree of rotation required to optimise mainsail performance. Similar to the Southern Spars masts onboard AC75s, the rig can rotate up to 45°, and as Cat 72’s flight control system is delivered by Gomboc (who also helped the AC75 take flight) this is a reunion of technologies that have proven themselves at the highest level.

persico 72 catamaran

Cat 72’s mast and boom are being constructed from high-modulus carbon in Southern Spars’ production facility in Auckland. The rig will be complete with a combination of ECsix multistrand and AeroRAZR solid rigging from Southern Spars’ sister company, Future Fibres. The former is the world’s leading offshore rigging – the official rigging of the IMOCA 60 fleet of the Ocean Race, the IMOCA Globe Series and the Vendée Globe. The latter was developed for the 36th America’s Cup, providing a low weight, low diameter solution in an aerofoil shape – bringing aerodynamic benefits which increase as yacht speed increases.

This fully integrated package owes its superior sailing performance to strength, lightness, and efficiency characteristics – with every element of the rig built from the highest quality materials, optimised through the group’s simulation software, and designed to perform perfectly together by collaborating engineers and designers from our group of companies.

The rig package will work harmoniously with other advanced components, including righting-moment foils, daggerboards, and T-rudders, delivering exceptional performance, stability, and control in all conditions.

Sustainability

The yacht’s low weight and advanced design will mean that it can harness the power of the wind as often as possible – with the RMFoils becoming active in just 9 to 10 knots of wind, downwind or reaching. When motor cruising is required, the owner can turn to a Torqeedo Deep Blue electric motor, for comfortable, efficient cruising with zero emissions. Solar panels on the deckhouse roof also contribute to efficiency, providing up to 2 kW of recharging capacity.

With Southern Spars’ market-leading rig technology, and the cutting-edge features of the Persico Cat 72, this project sets a new standard in high-performance luxury cats. It embodies the perfect fusion of elegance, speed, and sustainability, offering owners and guests an extraordinary sailing experience. As the rig is under construction in Auckland, anticipation grows for this landmark project, which is poised to leave an indelible mark on the industry.

“We’re proud to be part of this ground-breaking project, and to see our relationship with Persico take an exciting step forward. The custom wing mast that we have made for this project reflects our commitment to the rapidly growing performance multihull market. We can’t wait to see the final product and to work on more pioneering projects like this as performance cats keep getting faster and even more ambitious!” Paul MacDonald, Southern Spars Sales Director
“We are confident that Southern Spars will deliver a world-class rig that will help maximize the yacht’s performance and provide the ultimate sailing experience for its owners and guests.” Spokesperson for Persico Marine

With performance comparable to a pure racer and comfort worthy of a cruiser, the Persico Cat 72' is an innovative foiling sailing catamaran that ensures cruising at speeds of 25 knots and performance sailing at speeds of more than 36 knots in as little as 18 True Wind Speed.

Designed by multihull sailboat and powerboat specialists Morrelli and Melvin, the Persico Cat 72' is now under construction in the Persico Marine shipyard. Persico is recognized worldwide as a firstrate builder of high-performance sailing and motor yachts, for both racing and cruising. The Persico Cat 72' is being produced with advanced technology and equipment typically used in the aerospace industry and the same utilized for the foiling hulls of the IMOCA ocean racing class and the AC75s of the 37 th America's Cup.

"With Persico Cat 72'," Marcello Persico, CEO of Persico Marine, stated, "we are continuing to build the Persico brand name in high-performance maxi cruising, thanks to the experience gained in creating the most advanced high-speed racers, particularly in the foiling class". "We are very fortunate this project has given us to the opportunity to explore new boundaries of performance," Pete Melvin, naval architect and CEO of Morrelli and Melvin, noted. "Our customer has encouraged us to set aside convention and develop an innovative yacht that is not only highperforming but also luxurious – a cruising yacht capable of navigating in style in seas all around the world".

The 22-metre long by 9.50-metre wide Persico Cat 72' is constructed of high modulus pre- impregnated carbon sandwich with a Nomex core. Carbon was also chosen for the extremely lightweight interior, complete with everything and conceived in high-tech style by the multi-award- winning British yacht design studio Design Unlimited. Once rigged with a Southern Spars rotating mast and a Torqeedo Deep Blue electric motor (two 25-kW units), the Persico Cat 72' will have a total overall weight of about 20 metric tonnes, including the battery pack.

"We're proud to be part of this ground-breaking project - said Paul MacDonald, Sales Director of Southern Spars New Zealand - The mast will be fully customised to meet the specific needs of the PB72, utilising our latest design, engineering and manufacturing techniques. The mast and boom will be made from high modulus carbon and will incorporate our ECsix and AEROsix composite rigging technology from our sister company Future Fibres to create the fully integrated package. A custom wing mast tool has been made for this project – continues MacDonald – which underlines Southern Spars commitment to the performance multihull market. Production on these elements will begin in late May from our leading-edge manufacturing facility in Auckland."

persico 72 catamaran

For flying system development, the ship owner and designers turned to the simulation software behind the design of Team New Zealands America's Cup winning AC50 and AC75. Gomboc, the VPP optimisation software. Gomboc has been instrumental in the creation of the AC75 foiling monohull, and it is now widely used in the foiling IMOCA class. The Persico Cat 72' is equipped with righting- moment foils (RMFoils), that are rake controlled foils over 7 metres long, daggerboards for leeway control and T-rudders with rake control. This foil system is brought together using Gomboc's Flight Control System that manages the foil angles of attack.

"The RM foil is the most evident characteristic of the Persico Cat 72'," pointed out Ferdinand van West, lead designer of Morrelli and Melvin. "The foil has the same purpose as the one used in the IMOCA class, but it has been adapted to a catamaran and can be fully retracted. Using Gomboc simulation software as a design tool, we were able to achieve a jump in quality in development and immediately saw that it was possible to realize impressive performance figures. We made a carefully researched optimization so that the Persico Cat 72' would be a safe boat with full performance, even in low wind conditions when the RM foils cannot be used. The decision was to optimize the design to make the boat a semi-foiler, but one that can switch to a full foiler with the bottom just above the surface of the water, when conditions permit".

Indeed, the Persico Cat 72' is designed for skimming, that is, planing at about 20 cm above the water. The RMFoil becomes effective in as little as 9 knots of wind and can have the boat skimming the water at well over 20 knots of speed in as little as 13 knots of wind. For safety and reliability, the fully autonomous control system is capable of gradually lowering the hulls and decreasing the speed to the owner preference level thus allowing sailing in absolute comfort.

Steering and command is accomplished from one of two helm positions located outboard in the large aft cockpit. In addition, all sailing handling and flight control can be managed by a small crew of 3 from the aft cockpit. The vessel is also equipped with an interior wheel with flight control and mainsail control to ensure maximum comfort and protection from water spray at high speeds.

Passengers and crew can enjoy the 360° view from the saloon surrounded by the curved and fully windows. The large stern cockpit offers nothing less than catamarans designed as pure cruisers. On the roof of the deckhouse, there is space for solar panels, which can supply 2 kW of recharging.

This exceptional luxury is combined with predicted performance of up to 40 knots downwind and 26 knots sailing close to the wind, while ensuring the same comfort level on board as a catamaran conceived exclusively for cruising. The motor cruising speed is 8 knots and generates zero emissions since the system is electric.

"Combining performance with the quality of hospitality on board is one of the great challenges of contemporary boatbuilding that Persico can interpret thanks to its know-how - remarks Mark Somerville, Persico Marine COO - The Persico Cat 72' is a unique catamaran, capable of raising the international standard for this type of boat. Achieving great speeds thanks to the foils while keeping the boat stable and easily manageable by the crew is a new frontier for the entire industry. With the Persico Cat 72' we have synthesized our expertise in carbon processing with the craftsmanship we employ in interior construction and the necessary expertise to produce high-performance foils."

Malcolm Park, project manager of the Persico Cat 72' had this to say: "In 2015, the boat owner entrusted our team to develop innovative technology that would allow a catamaran equipped with every comfort to achieve almost full foiling. Through continuous learning, experimentation with creative people in the entire marine industry and an essential collaboration with Persico Marine, we think we have successfully met the challenge and cannot wait to share the project with the sailing community when the boat is launched in the summer of 2024".

As a matter of fact, the delivery of the Persico Cat 72' is expected in 2024, after the assembly and sea trials are carried out in La Spezia, at the new Persico Marine shipyard.

Persico Cat 72: Persico reveals a new foiling 22m catamaran

Italian shipyard Persico has unveiled its in-build 22-metre catamaran that ‘flies’ above the water, with top speeds of up to 40 knots.

Designed by Morrelli and Melvin , the catamaran is currently being constructed with a “high modulus pre-impregnated carbon sandwich and a Nomex core.” Carbon has also been selected as the material of choice for the interior, designed by the British studio Design Unlimited .

A rig by Southern Spars is being produced later this month in Auckland and will feature a rotating mast and power from a Torqeedo Deep Blue electric motor, allowing cruising speeds of 25 knots and performance sailing speeds of more than 36 knots in light winds.

"We are very fortunate this project has given us the opportunity to explore new boundaries of performance,” said Pete Melvin, naval architect and chief executive officer of Morrelli and Melvin.

Spanning over a 9.5-metre beam, the 20-metric-tonne catamaran will be lightweight and optimised for performance. The designers are using the simulation software Gomboc, the same system responsible for the AC75 37th Americas Cup winners. For ‘flying’, the catamaran is equipped with 7-metre long rake-controlled righting-moment foils. The foiling system, in conjunction with the Gomboc Flight Control System, will manage and control the foil angles.

“The RM foil is the most evident characteristic of the Persico Cat 72. Using Gomboc simulation software as a design tool, we were able to achieve a jump in quality in development and immediately saw that it was possible to realize impressive performance figures,” said Ferdinand van West, the lead designer of Morrelli and Melvin.

Planing at around 20-centimetres out of the water, the catamaran is designed for skimming. The foiling system becomes effective in as little as 9 knots of wind, and the boat skims the water well over 20 knots of speed in as little as 13 knots of wind.

In terms of predicted performance figures, the catamaran will be able to reach a maximum of 40 knots downwind and 26 knots sailing close to the wind. The eco-conscious electric propulsion system enables a motor cruising speed of 8 knots while generating zero emissions.

“Achieving great speeds thanks to the foils while keeping the boat stable and easily manageable by the (three) crew is a new frontier for the entire industry. With the Persico Cat 72', we have synthesised our expertise in carbon processing with the craftsmanship we employ in interior construction and the necessary expertise to produce high-performance foils, ” explained Mark Somerville, Persico Marine's chief operating officer.

For more leisurely sailing, the fully autonomous control system can enable sailing in “absolute comfort,” with the use of gradually lowering the hulls and decreasing speed. Helming can be done from two positions in the aft cockpit, while an interior wheel with flight and mainsail control can be operated from inside, protected from any weather. Inside, guests can also enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from the curved saloon windows.

Delivery is expected in the summer of 2024, with final construction and sea trials to take place in La Spezia at the new Persico Marine shipyard.

Persico Cat 72' Catamaran

Italian shipyard Persico, which specialises in high-performance sailing and motor yachts for both racing and cruising, has revealed details of its new Persico Cat 72 catamaran.

Said by the shipyard to offer performance comparable to a racer and comfort worthy of a cruiser, the Persico Cat 72′ foiling sailing catamaran has top speeds of up to 40 knots.

Designed by multihull sailboat and powerboat specialists Morrelli and Melvin, the Persico Cat 72′ is now under construction in the Persico Marine shipyard in Livorno, and is set for delivery in 2024.

Persico specialises in high-performance sailing and motor yachts for both racing and cruising. The Persico Cat 72′ is being produced with some of the same technology utilised for the foiling hulls of the Imoca ocean racing class and the AC75s of the 37th America’s Cup .

“With Persico Cat 72′, we are continuing to build the Persico brand name in high-performance maxi cruising, thanks to the experience gained in creating the most advanced high-speed racers, particularly in the foiling class,” says Marcello Persico, CEO of Persico Marine .

Pete Melvin, naval architect and CEO of Morrelli and Melvin , adds: “We are very fortunate this project has given us to the opportunity to explore new boundaries of performance.

“Our customer has encouraged us to set aside convention and develop an innovative yacht that is not only high performing but also luxurious – a cruising yacht capable of navigating in style in seas all around the world.”

Persico Cat 72'

The Persico Cat 72′ is 22 metres long by 9.50 metres wide and is constructed of high modulus pre-impregnated carbon sandwich with a Nomex core. Carbon was also chosen for the extremely lightweight interior, complete with everything and conceived in high-tech style by the British yacht design studio Design Unlimited.

Once rigged with a Southern Spars rotating mast and a Torqeedo Deep Blue electric motor (two 25-kW units), the Persico Cat 72′ will have a total overall weight of about 20 metric tonnes, including the battery pack.

“We’re proud to be part of this ground-breaking project,” says Paul MacDonald, sales director of Southern Spars New Zealand. “The mast will be fully customised to meet the specific needs of the PB72, utilising our latest design, engineering and manufacturing techniques. The mast and boom will be made from high modulus carbon and will incorporate our ECsix and AEROsix composite rigging technology from our sister company Future Fibres to create the fully integrated package.

“A custom wing mast tool has been made for this project, which underlines Southern Spars’ commitment to the performance multihull market,” he adds. “Production on these elements will begin in late May from our leading-edge manufacturing facility in Auckland.”

For flying system development, the ship owner and designers turned Gomboc, the VPP optimisation software behind the design of Team New Zealand’s America’s Cup-winning AC50 and AC75. Gomboc has been instrumental in the creation of the AC75 foiling monohull, and it is now widely used in the foiling IMOCA class. The Persico Cat 72′ is equipped with righting-moment foils (RMFoils), which are rake-controlled foils over 7 metres long, daggerboards for leeway control and T-rudders with rake control. This foil system is brought together using Gomboc’s Flight Control System, which manages the foil angles of attack.

The Persico Cat 72′ is designed for planing at about 20 cm above the water. The RMFoil becomes effective in as little as 9 knots of wind and can have the boat skimming the water at well over 20 knots of speed in as little as 13 knots of wind.

Persico Cat 72'

Steering and command are accomplished from one of two helm positions located outboard in the large aft cockpit. In addition, all sailing handling and flight control can be managed by a small crew of 3 from the aft cockpit.

On the roof of the deckhouse, there is space for solar panels, which can supply 2 kW of recharging.

The yacht has predicted performance of up to 40 knots downwind and 26 knots sailing close to the wind, while ensuring the same comfort level on board as a catamaran conceived exclusively for cruising. The electric motor cruising speed is 8 knots.

“In 2015, the boat owner entrusted our team to develop innovative technology that would allow a catamaran equipped with every comfort to achieve almost full foiling,” says Malcolm Park, project manager of the Persico Cat 72′. “Through continuous learning, experimentation with creative people in the entire marine industry and an essential collaboration with Persico Marine, we think we have successfully met the challenge and cannot wait to share the project with the sailing community when the boat is launched in the summer of 2024.”

The delivery of the Persico Cat 72′ is expected in 2024, after the assembly and sea trials are carried out in La Spezia, Italy, at the new Persico Marine shipyard.

Persico Marine presents the Persico Cat 72

A cruising cat foiling. It is the Persico Cat 72′ that Persico Marine is building in its headquarters in Nembro (Bergamo) and that for assembly will be transferred to the new shipyard in La Spezia where, after the launch scheduled for 2024, sea trials will also take place. ( Here all our posts about Persico Marine )

Persico Cat 72

“With Persico Cat 72’” Marcello Persico, CEO of Persico Marine, stated, “we are continuing to build the Persico brand name in high-performance maxi cruising, thanks to the experience gained in creating the most advanced high-speed racers, particularly in the foiling class”. This is how Marcello Persico, commented on the new multihull project that joins other trimarans such as the Multi 50 Planet Warrior or cat, such as the AC72 Luna Rossa for the Americas’ Cup edition in San Francisco 2013 built in the shipyard active in the world of hi-tech sailing since 1990.

Top technologies for the Persico Cat 72′

Designed by the American studio Morelli & Melvin (on the international stage after having designed Stars&Stripes, the catamaran with which Dennis Conner won the America’s Cup in 1988 against New Zealand’s Big Boat) the Persico Cat 72′ is 22 meters long and 9.50 meters wide. The construction is in high modulus prepreg carbon sandwich and Nomex core and with the use of all the latest technologies. In particular those that Persico Marine uses in the construction of Imoca foiling such as Linked Out or in the AC75 of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team for the 37th America’s Cup.

Persico Cat72

Pete Melvin explains the Persico Cat 72′

“We are very fortunate this project has given us to the opportunity to explore new boundaries ofperformance” Pete Melvin, naval architect and CEO of Morrelli & Melvin, noted. “Our customer hasencouraged us to set aside convention and develop an innovative yacht that is not only high- performingbut also luxurious; a cruising yacht capable of navigating in style in seas all around the world”.

Persico Cat72

The Gomboc Flight Control System of the Persico Cat 72′

The Persico Cat 72′ will be rigged with a Southern Spars rotating mast. Other peculiarities of the Persico Cat 72′ are the Righting Moment Foil, two foils over 7 meters long with automatic lift control, two fins and rudder blades with T-elevators. All connected to the Gomboc Flight Control System which manages the angles of attack of the foil. Added to this is the electronic flight management system which allows you to glide at about 20 cm from the water (skimming) at over 20 knots with only 13 knots of wind. But the system is able to gradually lower the hulls and decrease speed to the owner’s preferred level.

Persico Cat72

The Persico Cat72, with thanks to the on-board system can be managed by just three people, will be able to reach 40 knots downwind and 26 knots at upwind in maximum comfort for the guests on board. The expected cruising speed with the two electric motors 25KW Torqeedo Deep Blue (solar panels are installed on the deckhouse) will be 8 knots.

Cat 72 : 22 metre catamaran with automatic foils

Sören Gehlhaus

 ·  27.06.2023

Morrelli & Melvin from California designed and constructed the 22 metre long Cat 72

Persico is based near Bergamo, but builds the Cat 72 at its new site in La Spezia. Here too, carbon prepregs are laminated around Nomex cores in a sandwich construction, as for the Imoca 60 "Linked Out" or Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli's AC75 . The 22 metre long and 9.50 metre wide twin hull will have a boom and rotating mast from Southern Spars in New Zealand. Similar to the AC75 boats, the rig can be rotated by up to 45 degrees.

To get the 20-tonne cat "flying", i.e. hovering 20 centimetres above the surface of the water, the leeward seven-metre foil is extended from 9 knots of wind - in addition to the centreboard and rudder with T-foils. In 13 knots of wind, the Cat 72 should glide along at a good 20 knots, with maximum performance of 40 knots downwind and 26 knots upwind.

Automatic flight control at 40 knots

Morrelli & Melvin used the Gomboc simulation software, which had already been used for the New Zealand America's Cup, to develop the hydrofoils. The US design office entered the international sailing stage with the "Stars & Stripes" catamaran, which led Dennis Conner to the America's Cup in the 1988 Mis-Match. The Gomboc Flight Control System adapts the angle of attack of the wings to the sea conditions and thus automatically adjusts the flight altitude.

For the Cat 72, Morrelli & Melvin optimised the system so that the foils can be completely retracted when they are not needed. Two electric motors from Torqeedo (Deep Blue, 25 kW each) push the 22-metre cat through lulls at eight knots. Solar panels are also to be installed on the deckhouse for completion next year.

Persico Cat 72′, the new luxury catamaran

persico 72 catamaran

With performance comparable to a pure racer and comfort worthy of a cruiser, the Persico Cat 72′ is an innovative foiling sailing catamaran that ensures cruising at speeds of 25 knots and performance sailing at speeds of more than 36 knots in as little as 18 True Wind Speed.

Designed by multihull sailboat and powerboat specialists Morrelli and Melvin, the Persico Cat 72’ is now under construction in the Persico Marine shipyard . Persico is recognized worldwide as a first-rate builder of high-performance sailing and motor yachts, for both racing and cruising. The Persico Cat 72′ is being produced with advanced technology and equipment typically used in the aerospace industry and the same utilized for the foiling hulls of the IMOCA ocean racing class and the AC75s of the 37 th America’s Cup .

persico 72 catamaran

“With Persico Cat 72′,” Marcello Persico, CEO of Persico Marine , stated, “ we are continuing to build the Persico brand name in high-performance maxi cruising, thanks to the experience gained in creating the most advanced high-speed racers, particularly in the foiling class”.

“We are very fortunate this project has given us to the opportunity to explore new boundaries of performance,” Pete Melvin, naval architect and CEO of Morrelli and Melvin , noted. “Our customer has encouraged us to set aside convention and develop an innovative yacht that is not only high-performing but also luxurious – a cruising yacht capable of navigating in style in seas all around the world”.

The 22-metre long by 9.50-metre wide Persico Cat 72′ is constructed of high modulus pre-impregnated carbon sandwich with a Nomex core . Carbon was also chosen for the extremely lightweight interior , complete with everything and conceived in high-tech style by the multi-award-winning British yacht design studio Design Unlimited . Once rigged with a Southern Spars rotating mast and a Torqeedo Deep Blue electric motor (two 25-kW units) , the Persico Cat 72’ will have a total overall weight of about 20 metric tonnes , including the battery pack.

“We’re proud to be part of this ground-breaking project – said Paul MacDonald, Sales Director of Southern Spars New Zealand – The mast will be fully customised to meet the specific needs of the PB72, utilising our latest design, engineering and manufacturing techniques. Production on these elements will begin in late May from our leading-edge manufacturing facility in Auckland.”

For flying system development, the ship owner and designers turned to the simulation software behind the design of Team New Zealands America’s Cup winning AC50 and AC75, Gomboc, the VPP optimisation software. Gomboc has been instrumental in the creation of the AC75 foiling monohull, and it is now widely used in the foiling IMOCA class. The Persico Cat 72′ is equipped with righting-moment foils (RMFoils) , that are rake controlled foils over 7 metres long, daggerboards for leeway control and T-rudders with rake control. This foil system is brought together using Gomboc’s Flight Control System that manages the foil angles of attack.

“The RM foil is the most evident characteristic of the Persico Cat 72’,” pointed out Ferdinand van West, lead designer of Morrelli and Melvin . “The foil has the same purpose as the one used in the IMOCA class, but it has been adapted to a catamaran and can be fully retracted. Using Gomboc simulation software as a design tool, we were able to achieve a jump in quality in development and immediately saw that it was possible to realize impressive performance figures. We made a carefully researched optimization so that the Persico Cat 72’ would be a safe boat with full performance, even in low wind conditions when the RM foils cannot be used. The decision was to optimize the design to make the boat a semi-foiler, but one that can switch to a full foiler with the bottom just above the surface of the water, when conditions permit”.

Indeed, the Persico Cat 72′ is designed for skimming , that is, planing at about 20 cm above the water.

Passengers and crew can enjoy the 360° view from the saloon surrounded by the curved windows. The large stern cockpit offers nothing less than catamarans designed as pure cruisers. On the roof of the deckhouse, there is space for solar panels , which can supply 2 kW of recharging.

This exceptional luxury is combined with predicted performance of up to 40 knots downwind and 26 knots sailing close to the wind , while ensuring the same comfort level on board as a catamaran conceived exclusively for cruising. The motor cruising speed is 8 knots and generates zero emissions since the system is electric.

“Combining performance with the quality of hospitality on board is one of the great challenges of contemporary boatbuilding that Persico can interpret thanks to its know-how – remarks Mark Somerville, Persico Marine COO – The Persico Cat 72′ is a unique catamaran, capable of raising the international standard for this type of boat. Achieving great speeds thanks to the foils while keeping the boat stable and easily manageable by the crew is a new frontier for the entire industry. With the Persico Cat 72′ we have synthesized our expertise in carbon processing with the craftsmanship we employ in interior construction and the necessary expertise to produce high-performance foils.”

Malcolm Park, project manager of the Persico Cat 72’ had this to say: “In 2015, the boat owner entrusted our team to develop innovative technology that would allow a catamaran equipped with every comfort to achieve almost full foiling. Through continuous learning, experimentation with creative people in the entire marine industry and an essential collaboration with Persico Marine, we think we have successfully met the challenge and cannot wait to share the project with the sailing community when the boat is launched in the summer of 2024”.

As a matter of fact, the delivery of the Persico Cat 72’ is expected in 2024, after the assembly and sea trials are carried out in La Spezia, at the new Persico Marine shipyard.

persico 72 catamaran

Atlantic 72 Skylark

The gorgeous new A72 Skylark launched in Bristol, RI in mid October, 2018.  She was built by the talented, hardworking and dedicated crew of Aquidneck Custom Composites . It was a memorable day which included trailering the 72' long and 32' wide beauty through the streets of Bristol in pre dawn hours.  With the cooperation of town officials, encouragment from Rhode Island's Governor Gina Raimondo, and the careful work of the skilled crew from Brownell Transport in Mattapoisett, MA with their purpose built large boat trailer, all went well.

Skylark then departed Newport on a frigid November morning for the warmer waters of the Caribbean.  She will winter there, with her professional crew hosting the owners and also charter guests.

The all new Atlantic 72 can carry you worldwide on voyages that most will only dream of.   - And like all Atlantic Cats, she’s designed to be easily and safely handled by a small crew.

There are 4 double cabins for family and guests, plus dedicated crew quarters, each with ensuite head. Living spaces are comfortable and spacious in the pilot house and covered aft deck. The galley was designed with assistance from an experienced marine chef and includes spacious cold storage, professional appliances and ample counter space. On deck and forepeak storage can accommodate the owner’s choice of cruising accessories, such as paddleboards, kayaks, kiteboards or scuba gear. The first A72 is being designed and built to the requirements of a current Atlantic 57 owner and his professional crew. She will used for cruising with family and friends in far flung locales. Term charter will be available between owner visits.

COMFORTABLE High underwing clearance and a soft-riding hull form eliminates pounding. The interior is optimized for cruising comfort both underway and at anchor. Ample living areas forward and aft, excellent ventilation a protected watch-keeping station, a gourmet galley and dedicated work spaces will all contribute to cruising joy.

FAST Atlantic Catamarans deliver true high performance and are among the fastest cruising yachts. Windward performance is exceptional; they point high and tack easily. A powerful yet easy to handle sailplan, efficient underwater foils and slender easily driven hulls combine to produce fantastic daily averages.

SAFE All Atlantic Catamaran designs incorporate a secure, full visibility cockpit set up for shorthanded sailing AND a fully enclosed pilothouse steering station. They were the first catamarans to offer this exceptional cockpit configuration. All Atlantic Cats are unsinkable and incorporate multiple watertight hull divisions.

SUPERBLY BUILT The builder of the first A72 is Aquidneck Custom Composites, Inc of Bristol, Rhode Island. ACC has deep experience with high quality custom yacht construction, including 3 Atlantic 57s. The 100% Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Resin construction utilizes extra thick foam cores for strength and insulation. Robust uni-directional carbon fiber reinforcing laminates in all critical high load areas increase strength and stiffness for superior longevity. The owner’s choice of varnished wood interior on lightweight honeycomb panels provides true yacht quality at low weight. Electronic and mechanical systems are carefully selected and installed for trouble free operation.
