Sweden Yacht 42

Classic style, immaculate construction.

Yachts of many different styles can make an impression, but it is the ones that have a style that drifts back to the early days of boating that seem to make the most impact. The Sweden Yacht 42 yachts for sale today show off that classic style like no other. They are the traditional sailing style yachts that dominate ports throughout the world. When you see this yacht coming you are sure to be impressed, but this sailing yacht is much more than just a pretty face.

Power and Performance

A boat with the styling of the Sweden Yacht 42 can drift along effortlessly when the winds are right, but that is not always a possibility when the seas and winds are completely calm. Powering this exceptional sailboat is the Volvo Penta 55 HP S-Drive with fresh water cooling. The engine is powerful enough to take on even the roughest of seas effortlessly. When combined with the massive sail, you can sail the world without breaking the bank with fuel costs. The access to the engine components is located conveniently beneath the stairs leading to the interior cabin. With the touch of a button, you can check on the components and perform routine maintenance on the vessel.

Live on the Ocean

When out for a sea excursion, you and your family should not have to want for anything. The Sweden Yacht 42 is made for truly remarkable quality inside and out. When walking into the cabin area, you are immediately thrust into the exceptional quality of the furnishings of the salon and galley area. The full galley includes a stainless-steel double basin sink, full-size refrigerator, stove, and microwave. Other customizable options can be added depending on your individual needs. Teak and Cherry wood accents complete the polished look of the interior and storage spaces are found throughout the salon. The television area is completely tucked away with storage drawers beneath for any entertainment components needed and all furnishings throughout the space offer convenient and comfortable areas to enjoy living on the water.

Where to Sleep

When the sun has set and it is time to bed down for the night, the Sweden Yacht 42 offers three full staterooms to choose from. The master stateroom features storage space and a large queen size bed. It also houses the first of two full heads on board at the bow area of the yacht. The full toilet, sink, and shower with your choice of finishes complete the head area. The other two staterooms are at the other end of the interior cabin to offer a bit more privacy for all. They are side by side units and although smaller than the main stateroom, offer the same creature comforts. The main head area is a mirror image of the master, so there is plenty of space for everyone to stretch out and truly live while on the water.

The deck of the Sweden Yacht 42 is comprised of teak giving it the classic look of a traditional sail boat. The deck features a forward facing outdoor shower as well as a table with ample seating for all guests. The space is able to be customized to what is needed and therefore it can truly be the space you want for how you want to travel. This vessel is among the most beautifully appointed of all yachts on the market today and as it pulls into port at any port, it awards the owner a very head turning experience, to say the least. No expense is spared when it comes to the desires of the owner, so the Sweden Yacht 42 can and will be your home away from home in every port throughout the world.

Sweden Yacht 42

sweden yacht 42 review

None of these boats are light by today's standards, and in fact, despite their racy looks, the Sweden, Swan and X-Yacht are surprisingly heavy. The Hallberg- Rassy probably does not really belong in this group as it represents a more noncompromised approach to cruising. Still, it's a mid-40-footer, built in Europe and, ironically, on the light side for a boat of this type.

The Sweden 42 was designed by Peter Norlin and Jens Ostmann. The hull form shows a deep canoe body with pronounced rocker. Compare the rocker of this hull with that of the Swan. The forefoot knuckle is well below the DWL. The counter aft is quite elevated with a generous overhang. In plan view take a look at the curve made by the end of the transom. See how rounded this line is. This indicates soft bilges aft and a gentle, arced shape to the stern sections. Now look at the same line on the Swan. See how flat that line is, going perpendicular to the centerline. This indicates a flat run with a harder turn to the bilge. All in all the Sweden hull looks very conventional, almost retro. The D/L is 199.57.

The rig is drawn as a fractional type with a full-hoist, self-tacking working jib. The sailplan drawing does not indicate any genoa, but I think I can see genoa tracks on the deck plan. The spreaders are swept, and there are two sets of them. The mainsheet is midboom, which frees up the cockpit but puts tremendous loads on the mainsheet and housetop traveler. The SA/D is 20.56.

The interior is laid out for three couples with three double berths. This means that six people must be able to sit around the large dinette and dine in comfort. I'm not sure this dinette is that big, but you could always pull up a folding chair. The galley is dinky. I don't like it. If the icebox is outboard of the sink, it can't be big enough. Much of the food preparation will need to be done in the sinks as there is precious little counter space.

The nav area, on the other hand, is expansive. The forward head has a shower stall that intrudes into the fo'c'sle area. The aft head is generous in size, but has no enclosed shower stall.

The deck plan shows a long cockpit with benches big enough to stretch out on. The cockpit opens up aft into a T-shape with the seats cleverly pushed outboard to get the helmsman into the best position to see the luff of the jib. This also allows an open passageway through to the transom swim step. There appears to be a recess for the dodger to fold down into, X-Yacht style.

This is a good boat. The galley is not my style, but the rest of the design looks just fine. This will make a good, quick and comfy cruiser.

Sweden Yachts, known for its top quality build, has come up trumps once again with the recently-launched Sweden Yachts 42

Sweden Yachts, known for its high-quality build, has come up trumps once again with the recently-launched Sweden Yachts 42. With classic lines from the design board of Peter Norlin, this top-class cruiser/racer has already made a big hit, with 11 boats sold so far and more in build.

According to Jan Nilsson at Sweden Yachts, this new design was the result of customer interest for those wanting a sized down version of the 45 but retaining all the classic Sweden Yachts qualities. “We think we have done precisely that.” commented Nilsson. “We’ve also made the boat fun to sail and easy to handle. In fact everyone who sails a 45 comes back with a smile on their face.”

The sweeping, teak decking is a real luxury and something that one now tends to expect from all the Sweden Yachts range. The massive stainless steel/elkhide-covered wheel is postioned well aft of the cockpit, giving plenty of space for lounging. Thanks to the simple rig system, self tacking jib and most of the control lines led aft to the cockpit, the rig is easy to handle particularly when shorthanded sailing.

Although she’s primarily a cruising boat, she has a definite high performance feel which will not make her look too out of place on the racecourse. In fact several of the new owners have already put in their orders for racing sails!

Down below, there’s plenty of headroom, and together with large hatch covers, gives an extremely light and spacious feel. Most of the woodwork is mahogony and the attention to detail of finish on all aspects of the boat is some of the highest quality we’ve seen. The 55hp Volvo Penta engine is positioned under the cockpit just aft of the cockpit steps and is easily accessible from the main saloon.

The master cabin is off the saloon, foward, and features an ensuite including a shower at the bow. Another hatch cover just above the shower, once again gives plenty of light and unsurprisingly, is totally uncramped. The other two double berths are situated aft with a seperate heads and shower and plenty of stowage space.

For a standard Sweden 42 the price tag starts at approximately £260,000. For more details, log on to www.swedenyachts.se.

THE CALL OF THE SEA

  • Sweden Yachts 42

This is probably the best-sailing 42-footer ever built. A bold statement, perhaps. But we are convinced of its truth. Because when we design a new yacht, we always do our utmost to give it optimum sailing characteristics.

Every feature on a Sweden Yachts 42, from the shape of the hull to the design of the rig, works together as a harmonious whole. The result – a 42-footer that is unmatched for sailing. Set out on your first cruise in a Sweden Yachts 42 and you’ll know what we mean – immediately. It is a fast sailyacht and it performs beyond expectations.

It’s a yacht for serious yachtsmen, not landlubbers. In short, it gives you more performance per foot.

Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the Sweden Yachts 42

eBook: How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 18.8 suggests that the Sweden Yachts 42 will, in the right conditions, approach her maximum hull speed readily and satisfy the sailing performance expectations of most cruising sailors.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 40.3 means that the Sweden Yachts 42 will stand up well to her canvas in a blow, helping her to power through the waves.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 197, tells us the Sweden Yachts 42 is a light-to-moderate displacement sailboat. If she's loaded with too much heavy cruising gear her performance will suffer to a degree.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 29.4 suggests that crew comfort of a Sweden Yachts 42 in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of an offshore cruiser with good dynamic stability.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 1.8 indicates that a Sweden Yachts 42 would be a safer choice of sailboat for an ocean passage than one with a CSF of more than 2.0.

Sailboat-Cruising.com says...

About the boat:.

The Sweden Yachts 42 is a light sailboat that is very stable and stiff with a good righting capability if capsized. It's a fin keel yacht which makes it more maneuverable but like all fin keelers has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

It is built by the Swedish yard Sweden Yachts and designed by the Swedish maritime architect Peter Norlin together with Jens Östmann in the late 2000s. The Sweden Yachts 42 has two sleeping cabins and four berths, has an easy comfortable motion at sea under sail and is capable of offshore or ocean voyages.

About the Designers:

Peter Norlin was a yacht designer from Sweden. The sailboats he designed were in particular built by Albin Marine (Sweden) and Shipman Sweden AB (Sweden). Sailboats designed by Peter Norlin include:

  • Albin Accent 26: A 26-foot sailboat built by Albin Marine in 1975. It has a length of 8.1 meters and a beam of 2.7 meters. It has a displacement of 2,200 kg and a ballast of 1,000 kg. It has a draft of 1.4 meters and a sail area of 28 square meters.
  • Albin Alpha 29: A 29-foot sailboat built by Albin Marine in 1984. It has a length of 8.8 meters and a beam of 3.0 meters. It has a displacement of 2,800 kg and a ballast of 1,200 kg. It has a draft of 1.5 meters and a sail area of 36 square meters.
  • Albin Cumulus 28: A 28-foot sailboat built by Albin Marine in 1978. It has a length of 8.6 meters and a beam of 2.9 meters. It has a displacement of 2,500 kg and a ballast of 1,100 kg. It has a draft of 1.4 meters and a sail area of 27 square meters.
  • Albin Delta 31: A 31-foot sailboat built by Albin Marine in 1983. It has a length of 9.4 meters and a beam of 3.2 meters. It has a displacement of 3,500 kg and a ballast of 1,400 kg. It has a draft of 1.6 meters and a sail area of 40 square meters.
  • Albin Express: A sailboat built by Albin Marine in 1978 with two different models: the Express I (7.8 m) and the Express II (8 m). The Express I has a beam of 2.5 meters while the Express II has a beam of 2.7 meters.
  • Albin Nova: A sailboat built by Albin Marine in 1981 with two different models: the Nova I (9 m) and the Nova II (10 m). The Nova I has a beam of 3 meters while the Nova II has a beam of 3.3 meters.
  • Albin Stratus: A sailboat built by Albin Marine in the early '80s with two different models: the Stratus I (36 feet) and the Stratus II (33 feet). The Stratus I has a beam of about three meters while the Stratus II has a beam of about two-and-a-half meters.
  • Monark700: A sailboat built by Monark Boats AB in Sweden in the late '70s with two different models: the Monark700 I (6.9 m) and the Monark700 II (7 m). The Monark700 I has a beam of about two-and-a-half meters while the Monark700 II has a beam of about three meters.
  • Omega42: A sailboat built by Omega Yachts AB in Sweden in the late '70s with two different models: the Omega42 I (12 m) and the Omega42 II (12 m). Both models have similar dimensions.

Jens Östmann is a nautical designer who has designed sailboats including the Sweden Yachts 42, Sweden Yachts 45, Sweden Yachts 390 and Malö Yachts 370.

  • The Sweden Yachts 42 is a light sailboat which is a good performer. It is very stable and stiff and has a good righting capability if capsized.
  • The Sweden Yachts 45 is a moderate weight sailboat which is a high performer. It is very stable and stiff and has a good righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a fast cruiser.
  • The Sweden Yachts 390 is like a more modern version of the Scanmar. She has a relatively slim hull, lead keel and shallow skeg in front of the rudder. She was designed by Peter Norlin and Jens Östmann, over 70 boats being built between 1991 and 2006.
  • The Malö Yachts 370 is a family yacht developed for sailing performance and comfort. Designed by Peter Norlin/Jens Östmann team.

Berthon’s sailing yacht broker Alan McIlroy has openly professed his enduring admiration for Sweden Yachts, citing the exceptional qualities of the Sweden Yachts 42 and her larger counterpart the 45. They are without question superb yachts, combining astonishing good looks with superior build (both structure and finish) and offering sparkling yet easily managed performance.

History of Sweden Yachts 42, FREYA

FREYA is an obviously well-loved and well looked after example which we know well, having sold her to both her current and previous owners.

FREYA enjoyed a thoroughly comprehensive pit stop at Berthon’s big blue shed back in 2017, including sails, rigging systems and electronics. 2019 saw a fresh set of upholstery to saloon and starboard side cabin together with some cushions in the owner’s cabin.

sweden-yachts-42-freya-is-for-sale-2

Over the past year, to ease the convenience of handling, her current owner has installed a new Selden mast for in-mast reefing, accompanied by a brand-new mainsail from Sanders Sails. Pretty much every aspect of the yacht has been breathed upon as evidenced in her sales particulars.

Exploring the Accommodation & Deck Equipment of Sweden Yachts 42, FREYA

The Sweden Yachts 42 remains timeless yet contemporary, featuring a sleek flush deck, relatively low freeboard, and a plumb bow. With balanced rudder, fin keel and powerful rigging she is light on the helm, responsive and very much a sailor’s yacht.

sweden-yachts-42-freya-is-for-sale-3

Equipped with a self-tacking headsail and a streamlined arrangement of lines leading to electric winches, the sail plan is effortlessly manageable by a small crew or single handed.

sweden-yachts-42-freya-is-for-sale-4

For a yacht in her class, the deck stowage is more than ample, with a full depth sail locker on the bow and two large lazerattes aft on the quarters.

Below decks, FREYA oozes quality, featuring a wonderful layout and finely crafted satin varnished cabinetry.

sweden-yachts-42-freya-is-for-sale-5

She boasts three good double cabins, two heads one with a separate shower stall forward, a large saloon, forward facing navigation area with some quite nice chart stowage and last but not least a very well appointed, seagoing galley.

Sweden Yachts - anyone have one?

Just interested - thought they were the best boats at LBS. Do they sail well? Might get one in time for a part-time liveaboard (the 41)

longjohnsadler

Jealous - moi? No I don't have one - but I have done some extensive...well, drooling really over Swedish Yachts. Had a good look round Swedens, HR, Najads and Malo at SIBS, and to my view the classiest and best finished was the Malo, especially the new models. Doesn't really answer your question I'm afraid. But if you want a second opinion along on any sea-trials my mobile number is.... Have been on a Sweden 38 and they sail very nicely...

I sail every other week on a 2004 Sweden Yachts 45 and I have to say it is *the* business! It's fully equipped for blue-water sailing (i.e. watermaker, generator, satellite comms, radar, autopilot, electronic charting, EPIRBs, extra fuel tanks etc) which make it a rather luxurious experience to be on! It also has a carbon-fibre mast, boom and retractable bowsprit, so it is fast. It has not yet been raced in the UK but took part in the 2004 ARC and ARC Europe event and won the Antigua-Bermuda race and was second in the Bermuda-Azores... As for how well it sails - I've only been sailing a few months, so probably not best placed to give you a run down, but hope the other observations help! - Natalaie

great boats and really well built. is the 41 an older model ? they currently make a 42 and 45 and they had details of the new 40 at LIBS. A 42 had problems in the ARC this year. with water coming in through the keel they ditched the boat and jumped on to a container ship. suspect the keel had a heavy bang before the xing of the pond though.

Hm. A Sweden 38 I have been on had keel problems - thought to be following a dunt with a previous owner.

Beware keels fall off, they like to keep that one quiet unlike when a keel falls of another well known AWB.

there was also an incident a few years back, if my memory recalls. it was a delivery trip from sweden to the med. don't take my coments the wrong way but i'm still a fan of the sweden yachts.

I always prefered the Malo of all the Swedish yachts. I thought HR made the keels by encasing lead within the GRP and therefore an integral part of the hull. Do they or any of the others still do that or are they all bolt on extras like other AWB's now? Does anyone know why Simon Calder having spec'd out his dream boat Malo sold it so quickly?

ShipsWoofy

Beautiful boats, but I got the impression at the boat show a few years ago you could only day sail them between power points. Unless that was the boat show models, but the saloon seemed to be lit with about 10A worth of halogens, biiiig fridge, microwave, electric winches, electric everything! Either that or they have become a motor sailor. Though, I guess this is how all new boats seem now!

Assume you mean Nigel Calder? Well, reasons given in YM are that after they finished building, two new technologies came to market which he wanted to try - distributed power systems, and diesel/electric auxiliary power.

I sailed many 000's of miles on a 90's 38 which had bumped the hard stuff and had to have some rebuilding done internally, it was repaired at the time but then needed doing again later as there was some movement. I also remember at the time hearing about anoither 38 with keel problems. Lovely boats, although I think my Bav 390 was a better boat all round, just not quite as good to wind.

Malo keels are still encapsulated, I don't think HRs' are.

Well, having looked at various sailboats over the last 10 years, whilst been into power, its always come back to a Sweden as the best choice for me, So at the beginning of 05 after a long search to find one for sale, bought a used 370, and so far are highly delighted with her, she sails very well, both single handed and is competitive at club level with crew. Also sail a Melges 24 sportsboat, but seam to have more fun with the Sweden, very happy with the build quality, had a blow on a trip to Ireland, and she gave me utter confidence All I can say, this will not be my last one, hopefully in a few years will upgrade to a new 42/45 Regards TJ

Sweden Yachts 42

Sweden Yachts 42 is a 43 ′ 5 ″ / 13.3 m monohull sailboat designed by Peter Norlin and built by Sweden Yachts starting in 1998.

Drawing of Sweden Yachts 42

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of Sweden Yachts 42

Basic specs..

The Sweden Yachts 42 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel. But be aware that even though a keel is very good for speed racing, a fishing nets and the like in the water can easily make you into a troublesome situation.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 2.10 - 2.20 meter (6.89 - 7.19 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sweden Yachts 42 is typically equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta D2-55 diesel engine at 55.0 hp (40 kW), which gives a max speed about 7.1 knots.

The transmission is a saildrive.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 280 liters (73 US gallons, 61 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Sweden Yachts 42 is 1.83, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 8.1 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Sweden Yachts 42 is about 293 kg/cm, alternatively 1641 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 293 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1641 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 50m 2 (538 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Sweden yachts C34 info seaworthiness

sweden yacht 42 review

  • Add to quote

Happy holidays all, was hoping someone can share insight on the Sweden Yachts C34. Understanding this boat has a deep fin lead keel and spade rudder. Other than specs on sailboat data and sailboat guide not much discussion or comments are available on this vessel. Wanting to know how seaworthy this boat is as far as it's construction, the intention of use of it's design. Is she capable of long open ocean passage making? Sailing in the lower latitudes through the southern ocean for example. Could a vessel like this handle such extreme Gale forces 8 + safely? Any shared experience or knowledge of this make and model vessel would be very much appreciated.

sweden yacht 42 review

I don't know this specific boat personally. Speaking very generally, Sweden Yachts has a reputation for a very high build quality and a high level of finish. Unlike the Comfort 34 (AKA C34) most of Sweden Yachts were designs were by Peter Norlin, who was a talented and creative designer mainly of racer-cruisers, but with some nice variety to his work. The C-34 was designed by Kenneth Albinsson. I looked up Kenneth Albinsson's work and he appears to have had a short career in the 1970's and into the 1980's. His work seemes to lack the refinement that I associate with either Sweden Yachts or Peter Norlin. The Comfort 34 appears to be a quintessential IOR-1/IOR 2 design with all of the characteristics that would normally associated with that design era. IOR boats of that era tend to be a little heavy for their length, which is not a good thing for either light or heavy wind conditions. They tended to have a small sail area to displacement, which meant that they depended on a larger sail inventory and a lot of sail changes. Typical of that era, the sail plan shows 6 different jibs and genoas, and that does not include the two spinnakers that would have been required back in the day. . While roller furling and high tech sail cloth allow a fewer number of headsails, and sail changes, the rig geometry is such that even with roller furling and high tech sails, the boat will minimally need three genoas/jibs (155%, 135% or so, and 90%) to sail and cruise across a 5 to 30 knot wind range. The hull forms of IOR boats tended to be short on stability because they counted on a lot of crew weight on the rail. Typically a 33 foot IOR boat would have been sailed by a crew of 7 or 8 people, and all but the helmsman would have been perched on the rail except during maneuvers. That made these boats a bit of a handful in changeable conditions, particularly when cruising, since the boat would not have crew weight on the rail, nor the crew to make the required jib changes. On the plus side, IOR boats tend to sail very well upwind, But that feature is counterbalanced by their poor reaching ability and squirrely behavior when deep reaching and running. With their small mainsails, and small working sail plan, IOR boats rely heavily on spinnakers for downwind courses. Their spinnakers were huge (essentially the same size as a more modern 38 footer) and tended to be a little tricky to fly or retrieve. The one specific item that I can comment that I can comment on, is the Volvo MD-11 engine that was typical in these boats. In my recent experience the parts for these engines have become difficult to find, and are very expensive when compared with other makes and models from that same general period. Also that is very old for a saildrive and unless it has been recently rebuilt, it should be viewed as suspect. Jeff

Jeff_H said: Steve, People tend to place too much emphasis on whether a boat has a cored hull and/or deck. In reality, coring produces a stronger, stiffer, and if properly done, a more durable structure. Of the various coring materials, balsa was a little more expensive but it offered the best strength to weight characteristics of any coring that existed in the 1970's and 1980's. It was not as prone to damage from moisture penetration and freeze-thaw damage as foam. It is important to understand that there are a lot of 'proper" ways to build a fiberglass boat. Generically, there is monocoque (in this case with little to no framing, and no core) , Internal framed (glassed in place or molded and glued in), and cored. While the court of public public opinion seems to prefer the monocoque ('solid grp' as you referred to it), the way that unframed boats are built generally ends up with boats that start out weaker and which lose strength more rapidly due to fatigue more over time. Framing comes in a lot of flavors. Boats (like mine) were built using what was sometimes referred to as the "English method". This was essentially a fiberglass boat built like a wooden boat with closely spaced glassed in framing running fore and aft and transversely. This was labor intensive and took a lot of care, but produced hull and/or deck that was as stiff as a cored hull, but without the core. The construction sequence was also a serious problem. If finishing resin was applied to the completed hull and the hull allowed to cure, then the hull needed to course sanded wherever frames were to be glassed in. This meant a secondary bond which was not as strong as a primary bond. If the hull was not allowed to cure, then the frames could be glassed in, but the hull was likely to get shallow puckers between the internal framing when it cured. Because of the expense involved and 'chicken and egg' sequence of construction issues with laid-up framing, modern boats have frames that are molded outside if the boat and then are glued in. Properly done this produces a very strong and durable structure. It is not necessarily a light structure. A lot of modern boats have the spaces between the frames filled in with molded skins as a part of the molded framing. This produces a nicely finished hull liner but adds weight and makes certain kinds of upgrades and modifications much more difficult. That is combination of liner and framing is often referred to as "pan" or :"frame and pan" construction. Cored hulls provide a lot of strength for the weight and tend to be the most puncture resistant of the alternatives. It tends to be the most expensive of the construction methods (except for the English method). Properly done it tends to be the longest lived of the methods. All that said, on any given boat may actually be portions of the boat that are constructed with all three methods. In other cases there may be a mix of both cored construction with internal framing as a way of distributing the loads. To summarize, solid GRP should be the least desirable boat building method. If you are looking for a rugged boat, then what should count is the original design quality, the original engineering quality, original build quality, equipage, and the care, updating, and maintenance that the particular boat has received over its life cycle Whether it has cored parts should be totally irrelevant. I cannot say for certain whether the C34 has a cored deck, but I would guess that it did. Sweden Yachts typically offered their boats with teak decks, and the technology of the 1970's and 1980's for installing teak decks generally involved having a cored deck to fasten into. Most times that core was plywood rather than balsa. Plywood tends to be more rot prone than balsa since the moisture can move more quickly in all directions in plywood, while end grain balsa greatly slows the migration of moisture and rot. Jeff P.S. (And quite off-topic) My Farr 11.6 was actually from South Africa rather than New Zealand. Reportedly the South African boats were a little more crudely finished, and slightly heavier, but slightly more robust than the New Zealand boats. But she has served me very well. View attachment 145928 Click to expand...

Jeff, thank you for sharing your thoughts on this vessel and Kool pic. What interest me about the boat is where I read the boat has solid grp deck and cabin , hull all around no balsa coring. I will look further into Albinsson, thanks a again. Also cool pic with you and the Far 11.6 New Zealand , pretty awesome boat. Steve
