Are There Jobs on Super Yachts For Couples?

  • Are There Jobs on Super Yachts For Coupl...

There are relationships that start whilst working on board superyachts, however you may already be in one and wondering whether it is possible for both of you to get a job on the same yacht.

The quick answer is – yes, it is possible for couples to get a yacht crew jobs together, however there are different challenges you may face.

Whilst we can’t be the voice for all superyachts, from our experience of training deckhands and stewardesses , the ones who are in a relationship have gone on to be successful as a couple and work together on yachts.

Initially, you may find very polar opinions from captains and recruitment agencies with regards to working as a couple on a yacht.

Some view people in relationships as being more reliable and settled. This in turn may mean you are less likely to party and/or go astray.

You are probably also willing to go the extra mile to help each other out when work gets tough on board the yacht. This is especially useful on small boats where the team always need to be looking out for one another.

However, every couple in the world will have an argument at some point, which may disrupt and disturb the harmony on board the ship.

Cabin arrangements can be tricky on bigger boats for couples, but smaller boats will be more accommodating, but the salaries are normally slightly lower.

This may sound obvious, but you must also remember to try to join in…some couples spend a lot of time with each other and forget to integrate themselves into the team.

This can be a concern for the captain who wouldn’t want a disjointed workforce.

There will be some jobs you apply for where the captain feels strongly about not having a couple on board, therefore you will just have to accept that boat is not for you and move on.

How to get a job on a yacht as a couple

There will be a few ‘couple friendly’ jobs, but the most common and easiest route to getting work as a couple on a yacht is to apply as an individual.

There will be far more opportunities and this way offers the path of least resistance to get your foot through the door and establish a good working relationship with the boat.

Then when another position becomes available, you will be in a great position to put your partner forward as a candidate.

If you start off working hard and get along with the crew, they will trust your recommendation and chances are you will be working as a couple in no time.

When applying for roles, keep your yachting CV ’s separate. Having your CV separate will look more professional and remember you are an individual with your own experiences and strengths.

Once you get through the initial screening phase, now is the perfect time to bring up you are in a relationship and your goal is to work together.

The boat will want to know that you have a strong relationship and if you have worked together before. It would be good to be armed with answers and to have a strong reference that can back this up.

So, you may have to prepare yourselves to be working separately for a while but keep focused on that goal of working together.

There is superyacht work out there for couples, so with the right attitude and perseverance, you will be able to find work and start a new exciting career together.

If you decide to do a Superyacht Course with Flying Fish, we can help you as much as possible while you prepare for this incredible industry.

How To Get a Job on a Yacht as a Couple

Is it easy to find a couples position?

How long does it usually take to get a position together?

Are there many couple-friendly boats in the industry?

Can crew couples actually work together?

These are some of the questions we’ve been getting lately from couples looking to work together and with the Mediterranean season fast approaching, we are quite certain that many couples are already on the lookout for their new role together onboard.

There really is no right or wrong way or hard and fast rule when it comes to working together. Sometimes it is as simple as being in the right place at the right time. Either way, it takes the right attitude and perseverance to find work together in the yachting industry.

Sure, there will be a few ‘couple friendly’ jobs, but the most common and possibly the easiest route to getting work as a couple is to apply as an individual. This will provide far more opportunities and offers the path of least resistance to get your foot in the door and establish a good relationship with the boat, allowing you to be in a better position to put your partner forward when the opportunity arises.

Keep in mind that you are both individuals with your own experiences and strengths so keeping your CVs separate is key. This will show professionalism and that you are able to separate your personal relationship from your career.

Another option is to be completely honest and look for jobs purely as a couple and not consider anything else. Be straightforward about your goal during interviews. This approach will probably take longer but you may be happier. It may be a good idea to give yourselves a timeframe and then assess your plans if it takes longer than your set time frame.

Once you both have a season or two of experience under your belt, getting work together should be much easier. You may need to look on it as a short term sacrifice for the longer term gain.

Does it work for everyone?

Just like with everything else, working together as a couple has its pros and cons. It’s best to remember that even though working together seems like the ideal situation, it isn’t always the best option. Being onboard can sometimes get lonely and one of the best things about working together is that you will always have that someone to talk to after a busy day.

So is working together for you?

Every couple is different just as every boat is different. The bottom line is that there are great amount of things to consider when deciding to pursue a career together on board. It’s not easy an journey, not for everyone anyway. However, if you and your partner are persistent and determined, you will find the perfect positions that suit you both.

How Easy Is It Finding Yacht Crew Jobs As A Couple?

yacht jobs couples

Finding positions on the same yaacht is a common inquiry. Are you wondering about the feasibility of working together, how long it takes to secure your jobs, how common couple-friendly opportunities are? While there’s no fixed rule, Wilsonhalligan Recruitment is here to discuss working together as a couple in yachting. Remember – persist and stay positive!

yacht jobs couples

What’s Best? Applying Individually Or Together?

For those seeking employment as a couple on a yacht, one approach is to apply individually. While there are a few ‘couple-friendly’ positions around, presenting yourselves as individuals opens up more opportunities and helps you establish a favourable relationship with the boat. This enhances the chances of advocating for your partner when the right opportunity arises.

Keep separate CVs – this showcases your professionalism and demonstrates the ability to separate personal matters from your career.

Alternatively, couples can always be upfront about their goal of working together. There’s nothing stopping in your way from pursuing positions for both of you. While this approach may take more time, it aligns with your personal preferences. Be prepared to develop a strategy to cope with a potentially longer timeframe… Job hunting might mean reassessing plans if the process takes longer than expected.

Build Experience Independently

Building individual experience over a season or two can significantly improve your chances of securing positions together. View it as a short-term sacrifice for long-term gains.

Pros & Cons

While working together may provide companionship on board and a reliable confidant after busy days, it’s essential to acknowledge potential challenges. Loneliness may still be a factor, and the perceived ideal situation may not always be the best option.

Ultimately, working together as a couple in yachting is a decision only you can make. It depends on various factors. Each couple is unique, and every boat has different dynamics so it isn’t for everyone!

Nevertheless, with determination, couples can find positions that align with their preferences and needs in the yachting industry.

Tips for getting a Couples Job

by theyachtstew

We worked on separate boats when Ben & I first met, doing completely different itineraries. It ended up that we only saw each other 11 times during our first six months of dating. And while I wouldn’t change anything about our relationship or how we got to where we are today, I did come to realise just how hard long-distance is! After our first season of long-distance, we both quit our jobs, flew to the UK & then Canada to meet each other’s families & started to look for a job together. In the past five years, we have ALWAYS worked on the same yacht & have been hired as a couple.

Don’t get me wrong, though, it hasn’t always been easy looking for a position together & I’m sure you’re not surprised to hear that our first job as a couple was by far the hardest to find! We started looking before we had been together for a year (which agents said was not long enough) & struggled to find a yacht that took us seriously.

With the Med season fast approaching, I have no doubt there will be many lovebirds looking for a couple’s position, so here are a few of my tips that have worked for us! *As always, these are 100% my opinions, so take what you will from it!

yacht jobs couples

P.S. I am well aware that my EPs are upside down! They were swapped as soon as this photo was taken!

Matching CV’s When I print out couples CV’s & they look identical in terms of formatting, font & layout, it is visually a lot easier when presenting them to the Captain. It shows you have taken the time to work together on your CV’s, you understand the need to come across as a uniformed front & it looks professional.

Length of Relationship On my CV it says… Team Position: Ben Hulbert (together six years) One of the first questions I ask couples is how long they have been together & being as open & honest in your CV WILL help! Now that we are you are married, I will tweak it to this: Team Position: Ben Hulbert (together six years & married) The longer the length of time, the more stability you offer to a crew  & the higher your chance of being put closer towards the top of the pile.

Be prepared for compromise. One yacht we joined was a significant compromise for Ben. He had already been in the industry for two years and had an additional five years as a qualified boat builder in the UK – so it is needless to say, he was ready to step up to Bosun on a 50m. Unfortunately, the yacht only had 2nd stew (with no 3rd onboard, so after three years on yachts, I stepped into a junior role) and a Deckhand Role. We probably wouldn’t have applied for it as we were just about to resign after a hectic year & wanted a month off. It was, however, THE boat. The one we had spoken about on our first dates, with its dreamy West Coast Itinerary & incredible reputation for fantastic Owners. So we applied & thankfully got the position and ended up staying for three years. I moved to Chief Stew while ben moved to Bosun. None of that would have been possible if we weren’t willing to compromise and step down.

Another compromise we made was concerning cabin arrangements. On our most recent yacht, if we accepted the job together, we were told we would not be able to share a cabin. You guys, this was TOUGH, especially on a guest trip! I thought going into it that it would be easy peasy; what I didn’t realise was how much we relied on the privacy of our cabin to chat, confide in each other and hang out. We ended up meeting outside the crew door after my shift every night to say hi & catch up on the day. Luckily, our Captain was able to make arrangements for us to share a cabin on the Tank Deck not too long after the first guest trip & it made a world of difference having a place to call ours.

Apply to EVERY job Our most recent yacht only posted the Bosun position, not Chief Stew. So Ben applied, sent across both of our CV’s and then we waited. Finally, two weeks later, I received a call from Chief Stew & Captain while Ben was on the phone with the Chief Officer. Yes, it can be a bit annoying being on the hiring side, going through loads of emails from Stews hoping a deck position is also available, but we ALL do it & it’s sometimes the key to getting a job together.

Be Patient &  Resilient Ben has tattoos…15 of them! So you better believe that didn’t help us in our search. There were times when we discussed whether we should work apart until a position came up. I am SO happy we didn’t go ahead with that. Yes, we lost out on 14 different jobs in 3 months because of tattoos, but we also didn’t join separate boats to quit then as soon as a couple of jobs came up. We both worked extremely hard to update our agency profiles DAILY, went to every single networking event, the day worked, reached out to old colleagues & stayed in crew houses with other experienced crew. We made it our full-time job to FIND a job & refused to believe that we couldn’t be hired as a couple. P.S. Ben also went to Sephora, so his visible tattoos were no more… and as soon as he did that, we were offered a job the next day that didn’t care about visible tattoos. But it shows that we took the feedback we got from boats & made sure to fix any reoccurring issues.

Tips from other couples currently working together:

@Aliceroberta_ “I’d say it’s important that you don’t just for you first couples job offer if you bother aren’t happy. Although in a relationship we made sacrifices and compromises for our other half, yachting is along harder working together is one doesn’t enjoy the role/boat.”

@brionylaura26 “My numero uno tip would be to be patient and kind with each other. Going from hardly seeing each other and potentially being in different time zones with different schedules to living and working under the same roof can be a little testing at first. But, you will soon find your groove and work through it to a happy, balanced togetherness!”

@carriefletch “Agree on when to shut off “work mode” and when to have “you and me” mode. Aka, if you need to vent about something frustrating, communicate “, ok, I need to get this out…” and then once you’re done, be done. Focus on still being with each other and growing together. Being in yachting is all-encompassing, made conscious and verbal choices together to only talk about work when you need to, don’t let it dominate your conversations.”

@tmcompain “Keep personal problems (and over the top love and romance) in your cabin. Especially if you are only the couple onboard, it’s not nice making your crew feel uncomfortable.”

@revelintravel “In my experience, the best way to secure a GOOD couple’s job is to network network network. Unfortunately, I have found that some agencies offer meagre salaries and pretend they are doing you a favour by hiring both of you. My response to those provided has always been a firm no. It’s essential to know your worth and chances re that kind of jobs wouldn’t work out tremendously anyway (any relation should start with mutual respect, including an adequate salary).

@tamlawaverly “To assure that boat that even though you are a team, you are still awesome individuals, I find references that can attest to this are the best!”

@aimee_brisk “My biggest piece of advice is to remember what the Spice Girls put so perfectly…if you want to be with my love, you’ve got to get with my friends! Cringey, but TRUE. Girl time is equally as important as spending time with your other half. Balance was always key for me. I also felt as a second stewardess it made the girls and I have a stronger connection the more time I spent with them.”

@kyliejdv “As a couple, you need to be an asset to the boat. By working together, you push each other to be better, and that is always going to be beneficial for the boat!”

There you have it, lovebirds, our tips for finding your next Couples Position!

The Love Boat: Yacht Crew Couples Share Their Experiences and Advice

yacht jobs couples

Sara Ventiera is a contributing writer and former stewardess who covers food, travel, and other topics. Her work has appeared in a wide range of publications, including the New York Times, Food & Wine, NPR, Eating Well, and BBC Travel.

Brendan and Julie Emmons aren’t quite sure how they started dating. Both then 21 years old, they were home in New Jersey visiting family for the holidays. They hung out five times in the week they were there and kept in touch when Julie went back to finish her senior year in college at SUNY Cortland. Brendan flew back to Aventura, Florida, to rejoin the yacht he was working on.

After three years of phone calls and regular weekend visits, the couple decided it was time to get on a boat together. “In the beginning, it was okay because it was so new,” says Julie. “But it was like, okay, we can’t live like this forever.”

It’s a reality many crewmembers face: how to grow a relationship in one of the least conventional professions and lifestyles around. Whether it’s working and living together 24/7 aboard a vessel or dealing with hectic schedules and lots of distance, folks who work on yachts have to create uncommon systems to make their romantic partnerships work.

Finding a Balance

For Julie and Brendan, joining a boat together was fairly easy but it did require some adjustments. She had already helped out on his vessel for small events and weekend trips while it was up in New England in the summers. But the first week they worked together as full-time captain and stewardess was intensely busy and Brendan, as he’s wont to, said “yes” to every owner request. Julie, a self-proclaimed perfectionist, struggled with being able to get every task accomplished to her high standard of perfection.

Over time, however, they figured out how to find a balance. “Julie learned how I was, and we just dealt with it,” says Brendan. “She’s aligned with how I operate, and we’ve gotten much more efficient together.”

It’s a reality many crewmembers face: how to grow a relationship in one of the least conventional professions and lifestyles around.

What they have found harder than working together and learning how to balance each other’s ways of operating is working with other people. Brendan often feels the need to hold Julie to a higher standard and because the two of them are willing to do whatever it takes to get a job done, they feel like it can put extra pressure on their fellow crew. Julie and Brendan often find themselves working until 9 p.m. “We’re really just hanging out while we’re working,” says Julie. “When other crew are on board, we have to set more realistic hours so everyone on the boat isn’t stressed out.”

The issue of separating work from relationship time is common for couples who are business partners, whether on land or water, Dr. Yvonne Thomas, PhD, a Los Angeles-based psychologist whose specialties include couples and careers, told The Zoe Report . “Many have trouble separating the business relationship — putting away that professional side at the end of the day and focusing on the romantic side. The ideal balance can be reached, but it’s not necessarily going to be perfect.”

In an attempt to do so, the Emmons try to get off the boat and take time together as much as possible. Every day, they go for a five- to six-mile walk or run together — unless they’re on charter or an intense trip.

  • All You Need is Love: LGBTQIA+ Couples Share their Experiences of Life on Board

At the same time, it’s important for the individuals that are in a couple to have “me” time separate from one another. “You can’t be tied to each other’s hips,” Dr. Thomas told the publication. “Everybody needs a break and a time to chill out so you don’t feel smothered or suffocated by your partner. Maybe that means you take half an hour to yourself before or after you come together after work.”

That was one of the issues Gabriella Halcovich, 23, and her boyfriend Tom faced while they worked aboard together. She loved going on walks and exploring restaurants together when they had time off, but as someone who really enjoys her quiet alone time, the complete lack of space was hard, especially when she was working inside with guests on board. “I told him I needed a couple hours to be in the cabin alone,” she says. “We’d be on breaks together at the same time, but it was the only time I had to be alone.”

Making Sacrifices

When the couple, both of whom were working in the industry when they first met, got on a boat together, it was very exciting to get to spend so much time with one another. But the sacrifices they both had to make in order to join the same program proved difficult.

Halcovich, who dreams of building a career on deck, was pushed to work inside in order to obtain a couples position. After several months, they had to have a hard conversation about how to move forward. Either she’d have to work directly under Tom outside or transition to a different department. She wasn’t thrilled about either prospect, another common experience for couples who work together. Studies have shown that women especially tend to earn and advance their careers less when they go into business with their significant others.

  • Paying U.S. Taxes as a Non-Resident Alien Spouse
“Many have trouble separating the business relationship — putting away that professional side at the end of the day and focusing on the romantic side…”

Tom, who is a passionate sailor, much preferred the idea of working on a sailing yacht anyway. He recently took a bosun position on a 56-meter private and heavy charter yacht, based in the Caribbean in winter, Mediterranean in summer.

The pair decided that the best way to move forward in their careers and relationship is to work separately, in the same part of the world. Halcovich is currently seeking a deck position with a similar itinerary to Tom’s, so it will be easier to see each other during time off. “It makes time go faster when we’re both working a normal day,” says Halcovich. “We look forward to our hour or 30 minutes on the phone or Facetime.”

Any couple in yachting is going to make some sort of sacrifice. Whether it’s long stints apart from one another, one or both parties taking a position that’s less than ideal, or giving up one’s career.

How to Avoid Being the Bad Couple on Board

  • Be respectful about communicating with the crew: if someone seems upset, address the issue immediately.
  • Be patient and understanding of other crewmembers’ feelings.
  • Leave your relationship in the cabin: keep PDA and bickering to a minimum in front of others.
  • When you start to get frustrated with your partner on the job, take a break from the argument and hash it out after calming down.
  • Make an effort to spend time alone, together as a couple, and as fellow crewmembers without one another.

Allison Edelstein, 34, a lifelong sailor, and her husband Grayson Miller III, thought they had to leave yachting to start a family. Both came from traditional families — her mother is a lawyer; his father owned a construction firm — who did not understand the itinerant lifestyle. So, the couple moved back to Edelstein’s hometown in Long Island, New York, to take teaching positions and coach sailing.

They had a son, Grayson Miller IV, and Miller eventually managed to find a mostly land-based yacht job where he managed two smaller boats for a family who moved between Palm Beach and New York. Edelstein and their baby chased the weather with Miller, relocating every six months with the boat. For many yachting couples, that may sound like a dream. But both Edelstein and Miller felt like they were sacrificing their passions for marriage and family. Edelstein wanted to be back on the water and Miller’s goal was to run 150- to 200-foot yachts that traveled the world.

After seven years together, they ended up filing for divorce in 2017. “I think that marriage broke up because we left the water,” says Edelstein. “A lot of crew use yachting in their early twenties to party and travel, but it’s not really what they love to do.”

Edelstein’s thinking is on par with a growing body of research. According to Harvard Business Review , sociological research has been increasingly finding evidence that when both partners dedicate themselves to work and home life, they gain benefits including increased economic freedom, a more satisfying relationship, and lower-than-average likelihood of divorce. “The biggest thing I learned is that you have to keep doing what you love,” says Edelstein.

The exes have both found their way back into the industry — and are much happier and friendlier as a result. While considered unconventional to many, they have figured out a way to balance careers they are both passionate about with raising their child.

After getting back onto a boat in 2020, Edelstein met her current partner Marc Tacher. The couple relocated to Jupiter, Florida, in late 2021, where Tacher is running a 72-foot Mangusta and Edelstein is working on shore for United Yacht Sales, learning another side of the industry she loves. She’s trying to apply the lessons she learned from her first marriage to their relationship now. “You have to follow whatever it is that’s going to make you the happiest, otherwise it’s not going to work anyway.”

Carving a Niche

Capt. Bryant Grant, 36, who married his wife Alexandra at 19 while he was in the Navy, had been used to spending time apart, as he often had to deploy for six-month stints during his time in the military. But a while after starting his yachting career, Alexandra, a dental assistant, joined him on board a 59-foot yacht.

The couple worked well together for several years, but Bryant, cognizant of the difficult dynamics of working with a larger crew as a couple, decided to stick to smaller yachts to alleviate any potential headaches that could arise from having a couple running the show. “We purposely worked on smaller boats,” he says. “We wanted boats just her and I could handle on our own.”

While they could have chosen to go down the charter path, the Grants prioritized a work-life balance. They purposely sought out laidback programs that allowed them to have a life for themselves on top of their careers.

Bryant, who is from Jensen Beach, Florida, grew up with a passion for being on the water and loves working on boats. But after a string of bad job situations with difficult owners, Alexandra tired of yachting and wanted to go back to shore. Finding a long-term job that allows him time to spend with his family has not been easy. “It’s been a battle ever since she left, trying to stay home,” says Bryant. “As experienced as I am when I get newer owners on smaller boats, they get confident in their program, they want to do more.”

  • Basics of the U.S. Advance Child Tax Credit

Three-and-a-half years ago, the couple had a baby girl, Claire, and that has made sticking close to home even more important for Bryant. He says he did not want to be an absentee father for his wife and daughter. After Claire was born, he did spend a couple of summers up in New England. The first summer, when Claire was a baby, Alexandra’s parents flew over from California to help her out. However, the next summer proved difficult when Alexandra was completely on her own in Boynton Beach with no family and just a small support system around. Something had to give.

To make life a bit easier, they relocated from Boynton Beach up to Jensen Beach to be close to his family. The first couple of months, he drove down to Miami multiple times per week for work, but he’s managed to stake a place for himself in the industry up north. The boats aren’t quite as big or nice and the owners aren’t quite as wealthy as they are in Fort Lauderdale, but Bryant and his family have been slowly figuring out how to balance family life with his yachting career. “I try to find the right program,” Bryant says. “They don’t always pay the best, but it allows me to do what I love and provide for my family better than another job — and it keeps me home.”
