Multihull of the year

Neel Trimarans is a young French company which broke new ground in 2009 with a prototype 50 footer and then managed to establish their 45 in a world where the catamaran occupies a predominant position. Now there’s a new challenge. Neel have just launched a 65 foot trimaran, shown for the first time at Cannes Boat Show. We took a trip on board in early June for an amazing test sail.

You can clearly see the deck area and interior volume linked to this innovative geometry

Despite its size and significant windage forward, the Neel 65 is an agile boat with fine-entry bows and good clearance between the floats

A wide boat on the wide-open ocean

Moderately canvassed, this big trimaran remains easy to handle when short-handed

A gallery from which to see the most beautiful cruising grounds

The double helm station and sail trimming console

A superlative aft deck

The nav station separates the two salons

The two suites benefit from unique viewpoints, giving a new approach

The forward cabin also invents a new living space

Éric Bruneel and Neel Trimarans

The founder of Neel Trimarans is an experienced sailor and businessman. Having become the French sports catamaran champion in 1987, a specialist in Class C, he started at Fountaine-Pajot and launched the Corneel 26. A French development, blending the American Stiletto and the Danish Mycat, this little cat was a combining of the cruising cat and the sports cat, and an efficient and playful little machine which introduced the concept to many future multihull enthusiasts. Following this commercial success, over the next 25 years Eric reinforced the development of the yard, being in charge of exports, and then becoming Vice Director-General. He took a bit of a step back in the early 2000s to get involved with the new M50 class at the helm of his Trilogic, in which he won The Transat in 2004 and came second in the 2006 Route du Rhum, before launching himself into the adventure that is Neel Trimarans.

Test Neel 65

A pioneering and structural architectural concept

The production of a full set of molds confirmed the yard’s determination that they hadn’t designed this 19.8 meter trimaran as a prototype, but as a semi-custom production model. The vacuum...

The NEEL trimarans workshop has presented its first NEEL 65, the flagship of its range. The first unit of the series was launched on May 28 in La Rochelle.

The NEEL 65 has inherited all the qualities of its predecessors in terms of comfort, excellent sailing characteristics, the finesse of its steering and its high performance. This new model has six double cabins aboard, with six bathrooms.

The unique design places two cabins on a single level, shared with the living room and a large central open kitchen. There are two cabins in the central hull and a cabin in each float. Separated areas are built-in for the comfort of guests and crew. 110 square metres (1200 sq ft) surface area in total.

The layout is highly practical, with reserved living areas, along with a generous carrying capacity, and a unique design that meets all the requirements of charter operation with a full crew.

On the deck the wide cockpit (25 m2) with its outdoor kitchen, exclusive to the NEEL 65, are found alongside the spacious storage bins for leisure equipment (canoeing, windsurfing, paddleboards) in the skirts of the floats for quick and direct access to the sea.

The Flybridge is a convivial space of 21 m2 with a double helm and a table for eight, with seating convertible into sun loungers.

The NEEL 65 will have its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival from 8 to 13 September 2015.

Monster Maker – NEEL 65 Review by Kevin Green for Multihull World Magazine

Multihull World NEEL 65 cover

The Neel 65 is an amazing looking trimaran that I enjoyed boarding but there’s a lot more than mere looks to this monster 65 footer that has three levels and unusual interior space. Commissioned to be a fast cruiser and a commercial charter boat, the new trimaran joins its successful smaller sibling, the Neel 45.

Walking around the La Rochelle yard chatting to managing director Eric Bruneel we also looked over hull #15 of the Neel 45 that is destined for an Australian owner and local distributor Multihull Solutions are negotiating more sales.

A major attraction of trimarans is their performance, as I recalled racing through Sydney Harbour on Sean Langman’s Orma 60 Team Australia doing 34kts with one reef in, so there’s an obvious reason why ocean records are made by ‘tris’ as they have both speed and stability; and to a lesser extent this applies to the cruising varieties.

“Trimarans have the weight centralised unlike a catamaran that has 50% on the downwind side whereas tris have 80% centralised,” explains Eric as we walk around the 65.

Built near the grand old port of La Rochelle with its signature twin towers the area is one of the largest yachting centres in western France and home to Nautitech, Dufour, Fountaine Pajot and other builders, so the region is a great place for us yachting tragics to visit.

The yard is named after Bruneel himself and also produces race boats, so his team is very aware of weight efficiencies, as I found when looking closely at the 65.

Bruneel is a former general manager of Fountaine Pajot and OSTAR winner (on his 55ft Trilogic trimaran) so knows what it takes to build a fast and safe multihull. Read full story here.

Comment Standing at its helm, you can feel like a space pilot, because it is able to provide a cruising speed of up to 20 knots. Nevertheless, Neel 65 feels more like a luxury yacht than a sporty vessel - you feel like nothing can go wrong with your voyage, so it’s not exactly an option for thrill-seekers. Show more

The trimaran NEEL is faster than catamaran:

As shown in offshore racing, the trimaran is significantly faster than monohulls or catamarans. This is also true for cruising trimarans, as proven by the last ARC rally won by a NEEL 47.

The superiority of the trimaran is even more obvious when sailing upwind, especially due to the rig:

  • On a catamaran, the forestay pulls from the front beam, the mast compresses a central beam and the shrouds pull the two floats supporting the forestay and mast beam: this platform deforms in many directions. Consequently, it is then impossible to have a rigid forestay
  • On a trimaran, the forestay, mast and mainsail tension are structurally bonded to one strong, longitudinal beam : the main hull.

This configuration, as per a monohull, allows for a rigid forestay and good performance up-wind.

Performance is also enhanced by the centered weight.

The extra speed of the trimaran is an additional safety factor.

Steering finesse

  • A single wheel steering system connected to a single rudder by spectra lines .
  • The most direct line path possible to optimize the sensations at the helm.
  • The rudder stock on self-aligning bearings
  • A deep rudder under the central hull contributes to the anti-drift surface and allows an efficient tacking.

trimaran 65

NEEL trimarans are conceived for fast cruising

With an average cruising speed of around 10 knots , over 200 nautical miles are easily achievable each 24 hours . Speeds from 15 to 18 knots are often reached when the breeze freshens.

Weight centering is managed in order to limit pitching. The centre hull is rockered to facilitate tacking.

Floats are of a stretched form to privilege directional stability and advancement of the centre of buoyancy as a function of sail loading. The rigging is directly derived from racing trimarans, thereby achieving full cruising speeds up to  twice as fast as conventional cruising yachts .

The sail surface area is generous with some 17m 2 per tonne .

Finally, the trimaran configuration also facilitates sustained speed under motor propulsion . The low prismatic coefficient of the central hull means drag is very weak. The side floats are only very lightly in contact with the surface of the water.

NEEL 65: A Whole Lotta Trimaran Going On

' src=

We all knew this day was coming. With the recent launch and test-sailing of the new Neel 65 the concept of “cruising trimaran” has officially metastasized into the upper stratosphere. I was impressed with its smaller sibling, the Neel 45 , when I got a chance to sail one in France a few years ago, and I’m wondering if this new beast has achieved what must be considered the Holy Grail in multihull design: over-the-top accommodation space combined with decent sailing performance.

Looks like they got the over-the-top accommodation space box checked off in Sharpie ink.

The “ground floor” plan shows no fewer than four separate staterooms in the main hull and amas, all with en suite heads. Plus there’s room in the three transoms to stash a tender and a pair of svelte water toys.

The two alternative upstairs plans for the bridgedeck meanwhile show either four or two staterooms (again, all with en suite heads), making for a maximum potential of eight separate staterooms! Think about it. That’s enough space for Mike and Carol Brady to cruise with all six kids and their spouses, with room left over for a crew (or Alice, if she’s game) to come along, too. Add on a large flying bridge with a proper table and settees for lounging guests and you have a charter barge extraordinaire with truly dynamic partying potential.

Artist’s rendition of palatial bridgedeck stateroom

Rendition of forward saloon and nav space

Rendition of the flying bridge

Ah, yes, Watson! But will she sail? This has always been the major stumbling block for maxed-out cruising multihulls.

In this shot from her launching on May 28 we get a good view of the Neel 65’s underbody. That rather small fixed centerline keel, which mirrors the keel on the 45, might suggest inferior windward performance, but a) it’s deeper than it looks, almost 6 feet, and b) during my sail on the 45 I was rather impressed with how well that boat’s keel worked. We easily kept the 45 fully powered up at a 40-degree apparent wind angle. Not exactly a hot racing angle, but much better than the 50 degrees you see on most fat cruising cats.

This head-on shot from the test sail also shows what we like to see performance-wise on the waterline: a nice high bridgedeck with tight narrow hulls.

This nice profile shot of the boat sailing under an A-sail shows it is remarkably low-slung for a three-story boat.

Though she does look a bit taller in this stern shot.

The projected polars do show a good turn of speed for a cruising multihull, with velocity ranging from 6 to just under 14 knots in winds between 6 and 25 knots. (Though, of course, this might involve a bit of fantasy on the designer’s part.)

Bottom line, obviously, is we won’t know how this boat sails until we actually sail it, but I see some serious potential here. This could indeed be a “fat” cruiser that sails pretty darned well, particularly if you order it with the optional carbon rig.

I sure hope they manage to bring one into the States so I can find out.

Here are some more numbers to ponder:

Just as on the smaller Neel trimaran models all sailing control lines are led back to the flybridge and don’t interfere with the comfort of the guests seated aft around a huge U shaped sofa-settee/sun lounge.

On the main deck of the Neel 65 trimaran the “Cockloon” combines the living areas of the salon and cockpit into one harmonies space providing seating areas for 14 guests. The cockpit also houses a large relaxation area with two sun decks as well as an expansive swimming platform.

The comfort and elegance of the Neel 65 trimaran is best experienced in her XXL salon where shades of tan fabrics, chocolate leather covered seating areas and Alpi wood veneers give a timeless yet relaxing impression. The chef as well as guests can enjoy 360-degree panoramic views through the transparent galley wall as well as the vertical salon windows. The front of the salon is dedicated to navigation and lounge area. The master stateroom of the Neel 65 is located on the main deck and has an en-suite bathroom. This suite is larger than some of the hotels we have slept at in France! It has a view over the horizon from the queen size berth, through a large bay window that is nearly 2’ wide. Light fills the space and invites the outside world into your cabin.

Several owner layouts and customizations are available for the Neel 65 trimaran. If you have many guests or a large family, up to 16 guests can stay aboard.

Contact Aeroyacht to reserve your exclusive private tour with the Neel factory in La Rochelle, France. Best is – if you sign at the yard we will pay for your flight. Gregor Tarjan will provide you with an in depth look at all phases of construction and design of this innovative trimaran. We will organize “meet and greets” with the principals of the Neel Company, sit down to define your personal Neel as well as test sail on a Neel 65 trimaran.
