Located at (formerly known as Madras), the was the first sailing Club in the South of India. It was founded in 1911 by the then Chairman of The Madras Port Trust – in what was called the Timber Pond area of the Madras harbour.

Now, a century later, you will find that RMYC is still pursuing the ideals laid down at the very beginning. The Club’s primary purpose is in all its aspects. In the century gone by, one is proud to be associated with an institution that has done exactly what it set out to do.

We at RMYC pride ourselves in being an active, inclusive and family friendly Sailing Club, working together to encourage participation in the sport we all enjoy. Old or young, experienced or novice we welcome all those whose aim is to have “fun” on the waters.

From just a half a dozen races a year the Club now puts on a full and varied programme of racing (National & International) and cruising events all round the year to cater for sailors of every skill level.

With the fantastic sailing conditions that the coast off Chennai has to offer, our sailors are a part of the National Squad, represented the country in many international sailing events including the Asian Games.

After you make full or partial payment, if you wish to change your travel arrangements in any way (e.g. your chosen departure date or accommodation), we will do our utmost to make these changes but it may not always be possible. Any request for changes must be in writing from the person who made the booking. All cost incurred due to amendment will be borne by the traveller himself.

History of RMYCEC

The Royal Madras Yacht Club was founded by Sir Francis Spring, the first Chairman of the Madras Port Trust in 1911. The club was formed to popularise the wonderful and eco-friendly sport of sailing by introducing them to the thrills of the water among the people of Tamil Nadu.

The club was accorded ‘Royal’ status by a warrant from the Sovereign of the United Kingdom. There are many such Clubs all over the world, Royal Bombay Yacht Club being the nearest one, located near Gateway of India, Mumbai. All such Royal Clubs are affiliated to each other, thus forming a great network of Clubs. RMYCEC is affiliated to the apex sailing body- Yachting Association of India (YAI) and is their first Accredited Training Centre in South India. The Club has an excellent training facility replete with radio stations, emergency radios, AIS based tracking solutions, rescue boats, life jackets and a modern classroom.

The Club has actively promoted the eco-friendly sport of sailing and other water sports and has a rich haul of international and national medals. Fishermen children and under-privileged children are trained free of cost too. Also, marine commandos of the Coastal Security Group are trained as well as the naval wing of the National Cadets Corps.

Social Responsibility

The Club regularly conducts annual beach cleaning drives, planting saplings and sea turtle conservation activity. The RMYCEC played a major role during the Chennai floods in 2015, by coordinating a massive rescue and relief operation along with the Indian Air Force, Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, Coastal Security Group and the Government of Tamil Nadu. The Club boats were on the streets of Chennai along with the staff rescuing affected people. A large quantity of food, clothing and medicines were arranged by the Club from all over the country and efficiently distributed to even remote places affected.

In the aftermath of the oil spill in Ennore, the Club immediately organised 900 volunteers through marine colleges who painstakingly cleaned the beaches and surrounding areas thereby minimising the damage to the marine environment and the beaches.

Sailing is a great adventure sport that has been in existence in the city of Chennai (formerly known as Madras) for many decades but only for those who have access to premier clubs. In the year 2002 a small group of sailing aficionados formed the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association with the sole aim of making this sport accessible to all and to create champions in this sport so that they may represent our state of Tamil Nadu and India in the international arena to bring glory to our state and our country.

As an adventure sport, sailing is fast growing in India. It is in the very nature of all humans to seek recreation and to satisfy our need for excitement and thrill. For total physical and mental gratification it is a sport that is like no other. To ride the waves is a heady feeling that all sailors remember with a special longing. An exercise where the forces of nature - the wind and waves, challenge human skill and endurance for mastery over a boat, this environment-friendly adventure sport is the very metaphor for the complexities of life.

Tamil Nadu Sailing Association is a not-for-profit, non-political and non-sectarian association based in Chennai, India and its aim is to foster, encourage and train people in the sport of Sailing and allied Water Sports. The objective also includes building fraternal relations with other Yacht Clubs and Sailing Association in India and abroad.
