Exterior design

True to the Oceanis spirit, her deck and cockpit layout are a harmonious blend of form and function, offering plenty of space for relaxing, entertaining, but also for spirited sailing. Her stylish mainsail arch keeps deck fittings out of the way and all lines conveniently lead back to the cockpit. Her foredeck offers ample lounging options, and her wide, electrically operated swim platform provides ideal access to the water. The cockpit is safe yet comfortable, and the twin helm stations offer perfect sightlines down the sidedecks, as well as unique control over the yacht's systems.

Interior design

Bathed in natural light, her serene and comfortable interior will truly feel like a home away from home - even for larger crews. Bright and a joy to live on

Whether at sea or at anchor, the Oceanis 55.1 exemplifies the perfect modern-day cruiser - safe, stylish, comfortable and fast - and offers a way to the limitless possibilities just beyond the horizon.

Sunbathing areas

Combined with the cockpit’s L-shaped seats, the two sun-loungers on the roof cleverly provide extra places to relax outside. At anchor, the huge aft platform lowers to provide a terrace at sea level.

Her hull stands out for its bold taut lines and its color can be personalized over and over again, making her an unprecedentedly stylish cruiser.

Winches at the helm station

The unique design centers all the winches at the helm station so that all maneuvers can be carried out solo. This is very reassuring on a 55 foot sailing yacht.

eBook: Understanding Sailboat Design Ratios

Large, well-equipped production cruising yachts of this size can cross oceans in relative comfort and speed, but you'll need deep pockets to operate and maintain them.

Not only will their systems be powerful, complex and power-hungry but they'll need equally powerful and complex charging regimes to keep everything up and running. Regular maintenance and upkeep will be even more essential than it is on smaller vessels.

The Fleming 55 is a well-proven raised pilothouse motoryacht designed for serious cruising. Her semi-displacement hull gives her great flexibility in performance. The Fleming 55 has a range of 2,000 nautical miles at 8 knots yet, with her standard Twin Cummins QSC 500 hp common rail engines, she can attain a top speed of approximately 18 knots. Maximum sustained cruising speed is around 17 knots where her moderate deadrise provides a very comfortable ride. On longer passages, Fleming owners typically cruise at a very economical speed of 10 knots, where the typical fuel burn is slightly more than 10 gph.

The Fleming's deep keel provides protection for the running gear and stability in following seas. Because noise and vibration contribute to fatigue, Fleming has paid special attention to producing a yacht which has become the standard in the industry for its whisper quiet, ultra smooth ride. Fundamental to this achievement is the use of Aquadrive anti-vibration drive systems.

The Fleming 55 was first introduced in 1986, and since that time it has benefited from a rigorous program of evolution. There have been literally hundreds of improvements made, both big and small. While its legendary hull design remains essentially the same, today's Fleming 55 is a thoroughly modern yacht utilizing advanced technology, materials and construction methods. In 2019 construction of hull number 250 is well underway, making it one of the most successful production yachts in history.

Overview Continued...

Foredeck and Forepeak

Special attention has been paid to the ability to set and retrieve heavy ground tackle on the Fleming 55. The fiberglass anchor platform is equipped with twin Maxwell RC12 vertical windlasses with capstans for both rope and 3/8" (10mm) Grade-60 stainless steel chain. The windlass has a plug-in remote control as well as controls in the pilothouse and on the flybridge. Double sets of grooved rollers make it possible to self-launch and stow two 77 lb (35 Kg) Ultra anchors. Hose bibs for salt and fresh water are located next to the anchor platform, and there are deck lockers to port and stbd.

A lock-down hatch on the foredeck provides convenient access to the forepeak, which is separated from the rest of the yacht by a collision bulkhead. It has an area for storage of chain and a separate ventilated rope locker. Each features a bitter end fitting. The forepeak drains directly overboard and can be hosed down without concerns that water will contaminate the bilges.

The flared bow turns aside green water and provides a forward deck of unusually generous proportions. The oval stainless steel handrail has been brought inboard of the sloping bulwarks for convenience and security. To prevent streaking of the hull, the deck scuppers are piped down to the boot stripe, rather than being allowed to drain directly overboard.

Further protection against heavy weather is provided by the design of the Portuguese bridge. There is comfortable seating on its forward side, which is also the location for the forward shorepower inlet. There is ample storage for fenders and lines inside ventilated lockers accessed from the aft side of the Portuguese Bridge, and double doors close off the forward deck areas from the side and bridge decks creating a safe area for small children. There are sturdy, stainless steel handrails around the forward face of the pilothouse and down both side decks.

Easy stairs with handrails designed for both adults and children lead down to the wide and well-protected side-decks, which run down both sides of the boat. Here you will find cleats and chocks for forward and aft spring lines. The inward-opening bulwark doors make for easy and safe boarding.

Aft Deck and Swim Platform

With an area of approximately 250 sq ft. the Fleming 55 aft deck is unusually large. Being all at one level, it becomes an extension of the salon and provides ample space for chairs, donning scuba gear, or fishing. The fiberglass skirt around the edge of the wide teak cap rail conceals mood lighting and hides the engine-room air intakes which are well-protected from salt-laden spray.

Shower fittings for hot and cold water, located next to the inward-opening transom door, are conveniently placed for use while standing on the swim platform. Stainless steel handrails on the transom and a swim ladder, which can be deployed by a person in the water, provide safety and convenience.

Access to the upper boat deck is via a stainless steel ladder and a sliding hatch in the overhead. Access into the lazarette is through lockable hatches, with safe and stylish curved corners. Available as options are a console for cockpit engine controls and a locker, which can be equipped with a basin and faucet, insulated chest or icemaker.

Flying Bridge

The Fleming 55 low-profile flying bridge is spacious and packed with practical amenities. Its double helmseat, with folding stainless steel footrest, folds forward to access storage beneath it. The control console has full engine instrumentation and ample room for electronics. Access to and from the pilothouse is by a protected internal companionway directly from the pilothouse, avoiding the need to navigate perilous steps or ladders where a slip could result in a fall over the side. A wrap-around venturi windshield with stainless steel handrail provides protection from wind and weather.

There is seating for eight guests close to, but out of the way of, the helm station. A fiberglass table is standard and an ingenious pass-thru "dumbwaiter" eliminates the need to carry refreshments up from the galley. Aft of the seating area is the separate boat deck for the tender and a fully hydraulic davit, with remote control. From here, a ladder provides direct access to the lower aft deck.

A popular option is the aft facing boat deck control station that provides the captain with excellent visibility aft. Complete with bow thruster, and engine controls, backing into a tight slip is easier than ever.

The radar arch provides ample room for the full range of antennae required by modern electronic equipment, and an optional fibreglass hardtop is a popular choice.

Main Salon and Galley

The salon in the Fleming 55 features a comfortable L-settee with cushions upholstered over wood frames instead of the usual foam cushions on plywood. The sole is hand-laid teak and holly strips, and all built-in furniture is of superior quality joinerwork with rounded corners. There is a hi-lo table of unique design making it suitable for dining and as a coffee table. To starboard is a cabinet with powered TV lift and space for entertainment system components. To port is a bar with icemaker. The salon opens directly onto the aft deck through double sliding doors.

The galley is conveniently located on the same level as the salon and is properly designed to be used while underway. Either Corian or granite counter tops can be ordered. There are ample storage lockers and drawers, and appliances include a 21 cu. ft. side-by-side fridge/freezer with teak-panel doors and chilled water & ice dispenser; Miele induction cooktop with practical custom stainless steel pot-holders; convection microwave; and an undermount double stainless steel sink with waste disposer. Space has been provided for an optional dishwasher. A 20-gallon water heater is conveniently located close to the sinks for instant hot water. A pass-through dumbwaiter makes it safe and easy to serve food and drinks to guests on the flying bridge.

Fleming's signature low-profile design is evident even in the interior, as just a few steps lead up to pilothouse and down to the accommodations.

Accommodations

The perfect close to a day of cruising is to retire to a comfortable cabin. The Fleming 55 offers easy access to all the accommodations via a central passageway. A separate washer and drier are conveniently located behind a sliding door in this passage.

The master cabin is forward for maximum light and ventilation. It features a tapered queen berth with headboard. The bed lifts at the press of a button to access storage for bulky items. The bed also slides aft to make it easier to make the bed. There are two hanging lockers with shelves, teak louvered doors and space for a TV.

The master cabin has an en suite head with Corian, marble or granite countertops and a molded fiberglass shower stall. Hans-Grohe faucets are used throughout and feature a thermostatically controlled shower.

The port guest cabin is offered with either two single or one double bed with headboards. An additional slide-out upper berth with either layout is optional. The aft bulkhead has generous bookshelves. The starboard guest cabin has one lower and one upper, slide-out, upper berth. This cabin can also be offered as an optional office with desk, lockers, bookshelves and space for a computer & printer.

The guest head features a one-piece fiberglass molding and shower stall with bi-fold stainless steel doors. The attractive ceramic basin is set in a Corian, marble or granite countertop. Faucets are Hans-Grohe with a thermostatically controlled shower.

Throughout the yacht all lighting is LED type with polished stainless steel fittings. Teak and holly soles are standard in all interior areas.

Engine Room

The Fleming 55 engine room is meticulously well thought out and provides easy accessibility to every piece of equipment.

A signature feature of the Fleming 55 is its quietness and freedom from vibration. Much of the credit for this lies with the Aquadrive system, which isolates the engine and transmission from the propeller thrust, permitting the use of much softer engine mounts. Aquadrive is fitted as standard on every Fleming 55 and their rotating couplings are concealed beneath fiberglass covers for safety.

Another reason for the quietness of the Fleming is the careful attention paid to sound insulation. Lead/foam insulation is used extensively throughout and all hatches are dogged down on rubber gaskets. There are even double hatches separated by an air space over each engine.

Fuel tanks are made of fiberglass with integrally molded sumps to allow maximum useage of fuel. Vinylester resin is used in their construction on the interior and fire-retardant resin in the outer layers. The fuel system has been designed to make the transfer of fuel foolproof. It is impossible to inadvertently overfill one tank by incorrectly switching a fuel return valve.

Access to the engine room is via two hatches in the salon sole and from the lazarette through a uniquely shaped oval door designed for easy access. Engine room intake air enters from the lazarette to ensure it is free of salt before reaching the engines and generators.

For safety and convenience each Cummins QSC 500HP engine has a start and a stop button located in the engine room, and a PTO (power take-off) on the gearbox provides hydraulic power for the stabilizers which are standard equipment on all Flemings.

Inside the large lazarette are four polyethylene water tanks totaling 300 gallons (1,135 liters), battery master switches, and a 3,500 watt inverter. Four air conditioning compressors provide heating and cooling for the entire yacht. Against the transom is the steering system with its connection point for the autopilot. The tops for the rudder stocks terminate above the waterline. Despite all this equipment there remains 95 cu. ft. of storage for fenders and other cruising gear. Access to the engine room is through the oval-shaped door.

In many modern designs it has become fashionable to eliminate the inside steering station, but the Fleming 55 features a pilothouse which closely resembles the bridge of a much larger vessel. We created a dedicated place from which the boat is piloted and controlled without any distractions from other on-board activities but which is still only three steps from the salon and galley. Four interior steps safely lead to the upper flying bridge station.

Specially designed removable consoles provide ample room for a full range of modern electronic equipment without intruding on the engine instrumentation. Overhead consoles provide additional space. There is also a proper chart area with drawers and a chart light. Electrical panels swing out to provide easy access to wiring connections and the inside of the flying bridge console is accessed through a swing-out bookcase. The watch-keeper has their own Stidd helm seat and an adjacent, raised L-shaped settee and table provide a comfortable social area with excellent visibility through the side and forward windows.

This is truly the nerve center of the boat where all the systems and crew come together in complete harmony.

CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS

All Fleming Yachts are built to comply with the appropriate marine and environmental regulations for the area in which the yacht is delivered

USA - NMMA Certified Manufacturer fully complying with: ABYC, USCG and EPA regulations.

European - Built to CE-RCD Category "A" Ocean Standard using the relevant ISO standards.

MANAGEMENT & ENVIRONMENT

Fleming Yachts Construction (HK) Ltd management and environmental systems have met and been approved by ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Systems and ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Standards.

The question most manufacturers ask themselves when considering a new feature is whether it is necessary to include it in order to sell the boat. In the case of the Fleming, we ask only whether its inclusion will make the boat safer, better or more convenient. That is why we have introduced literally hundreds of refinements since we started construction in 1985 and why we continue the process today.

For that reason, Fleming Yachts reserves the right to make changes to specifications and equipment without notice.

The Sailboat for All Who Love Open Waters

Faithful to the spirit of the line – with elegance, high performance, and comfort for offshore sail-ing and longer voyages – this sailboat does not hesitate to break from tradition to better meet the expectations of avid sailors headed for far-off destinations. Designed as a true private apartment, in an unprecedented layout, the forward owner's suite occupies fully two-thirds of the interior. Refined, bright and comfortable, the Jeanneau Yachts 55 is well equipped for cruising with full peace of mind. The main companionway provides private access to the owner's suite, opening onto the forward cabin, and features numerous handholds for safety on board while under way. Two cabins with private bathrooms enable guests to enjoy perfectly independent living spaces, accessible from the cockpit by two separate companionways.

Revolutionary Deck Layout

On the exterior, the Dual Cockpit takes on new meaning. The aft is dedicated to relaxation, featur-ing: two saloons, one U-shaped and one L-shaped, which each convert into sundecks, and a gigantic hy-draulic swim platform. The twin helms are positioned forward, and even feature an exterior chart table with a GPS screen and autopilot controls, all sheltered by the hard top and the wide, wrapa-round windscreen, offering remarkable visibility. These innovations enable you to cruise in all seasons and latitudes, placing the pleasure of sailing back at the heart of life on board. When the dream becomes a reality…

Innovations that make life easier

This ocean-going catamaran offers it all. Tilting helms to combine steering pleasure, visibility and perfect protection from the elements. Whether you want to enjoy the view of the water and your sails, comfortably installed on the double bench seat, or protected from the elements in the cockpit, you keep perfect control of the boat. Comfortable seating on each side, standing supports in the middle position, or even sitting sheltered in the cockpit, you’re sure to need thousands of miles to decide on your favorite helm position! To each his own…

Easy movement and unobstructed views

With its wide saloon opening on the cockpit, its flush floor and its bay windows disappearing completely behind the coachroof bulkhead, the Outremer 55 has been designed to ensure ergonomic continuity of space and make moving around on board easier.

The 360° view from the saloon and cockpit allows exceptional visibility of the water and the environment, and greatly contributes to comfort on board. From the chart table, of course, but also when cooking or during meals, the forward vision is never interrupted. A crucial factor for a serene cruise on your ocean-going catamaran!

A central island that can be transformed into a high table

Nothing is more pleasant than preparing a meal, having drinks and entertaining around the island table, which offers an extra sitting area thanks to the fold-up shelf.

X-Yachts X46: Best Full-Size Cruiser 45 to 55 Feet

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: December 9, 2019

X-Yachts

The big-boat classes in the 2020 Boat of the Year competition presented some big problems for the judging panel. Take the Full-Size Cruiser 45 to 55 Feet fleet, with a quartet of extremely solid contenders across a wide range of price points and with different design briefs and objectives, ranging from versatile performance-style cruisers to a dedicated bluewater passagemaker. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

At $550,000, the Bavaria C50 packed a lot of punch into a 50-footer. “It’s billed as a family cruiser, and features twin helms and a single rudder,” judge Dan Spurr said. “The representative who presented the boat emphasized the division between the entertainment area and the cockpit and working areas, and that cockpit really resonated with me—for a bigger boat, it’s very efficient to sail.” The Bavaria also struck a chord with fellow judge Ed Sherman: “I’ve been watching the evolution of Bavarias since they first started coming to the United States, and they’ve come a long way. Everything about them is significantly better than the earlier boats, and you get a lot of features for the price. It’s a player in this group.”

Elan Impression 45.1

From a value standpoint, the Elan Impression 41.5 left a strong, good impression on the judging panel. Judge Ralph Naranjo was particularly enamored with the overall build quality of the hull laminate. “It’s an ISO-approved Category A offshore boat; they did a really nice job with the vacuum infusion,” he said. “I was crawling in those aft lockers looking at the autopilot arrangement, and could see how well the deck elements and bulkheads went in. And the autopilot installation was great, with an excellent stainless-steel bracket that was bolted and cantilevered to catch both the deck and the bulkhead. The autopilot and rams have to take a huge amount of thrust or push/pull; they need to be in there securely. And they were.”

It was clearly going to take an outstanding vessel to sway the panel’s opinions. It turned out there was not only one other formidable yacht to choose from, but two.

Amel 50

“The Amel 50 is truly an oceangoing globe-trotter,” Sherman said, speaking about the latest, highly anticipated model from the long-standing stalwart French builder. “With a signature watertight forward crash bulkhead, a centrally located sea chest for easily isolating a leak and shutting it down, to a globally conscious shore-power system that can deal with 50 or 60 hertz and 120 or 230-240 volts, Amel has designed a boat that will have you covered wherever your travels take you. For those who want to cruise in luxury, this is the boat.”

“Amel has long been one of the only worldwide companies to offer what is essentially a ‘ready to cruise’ boat,” Spurr said. “The boat can be operated entirely from the security of the cockpit, which has a windshield and hardtop, like many solo offshore racers. Some of my colleagues didn’t like this feature, feeling it isolated the helm from feeling the weather. The boat is not inexpensive, but it also seemed to have the highest-quality finish.”

Bavaria C50

“To me, it’s more of a motorsailer than a traditional cruising sailboat,” Naranjo said. “Her performance under sail is somewhat limited by a fairly high displacement and a modest sail area. She is easy to handle, though, because of her power-assisted sail trimming and setting capabilities.”

Sailing prowess is never a debatable issue with X-Yachts, however, and after treating the judges to a world-class sailing experience, they ultimately decided that the X-Yachts X46 was the Best Full-Size Cruiser 45 to 55 Feet for 2020. (It was a back-to-back winning effort from X-Yachts; in 2019, X-Yachts’ X49 was also honored as the Best Full-Size Cruiser.)

“This was just a joy to sail,” Sherman said. “A performance sailing boat in every sense —very close-winded. It was everything I’ve come to expect from X-Yachts. They are put together by real craftspeople who take a great deal of concern in everything they do. So many little things. For instance, the wiring connections behind the panel board are all bent to 90 degrees and secured in place, and they hand-solder the solid copper bus links between the switches. This is all labor-intensive stuff that you just don’t see on most boats. They’ve always been known for using top-quality gear, and they certainly didn’t cut any corners here.

“X-Yachts are put together by real craftspeople who take a lot of pride in their work.”

“The epoxy resin they use in the layup is going to last forever, and the post-cure process is just top shelf,” Sherman continued. “I mean, what can I say? And I believe the pricing is actually pretty darn good. This boat costs $740,000, which is nothing to laugh at—it’s a significant amount of money. But when you compare it dollarwise to some of the other boats out there of similar lengths, you know what? It kind of stands out. And so, yes, I’m a fan. I’ve always been.”

“Like all X-Yachts, it has a unique feature in the construction, with a steel grid that sits on stringers with a balanced lifting point where you can actually lift the entire boat with a crane, with a strop that comes down through a hatch,” Spurr said. “The quality of construction all around seemed very good, with the keel actually bolted to the grid. Basically, we were told that you can’t lose the keel on this boat, which is pretty remarkable. And it’s really a handsome boat all the way around.”

Not to mention, when the final votes were cast, it was a winning one.

Brooklin Boat Yard

Outlier 2019

Outlier is a 55-foot cold-molded custom sloop designed by Botin Partners of Spain. She’s a Spirit of Tradition racer and daysailer engineered for performance. While she has a modern underbody with a deep, fixed-bulb keel, Outlier ’s aesthetic above the waterline is decidedly traditional with a roomy cockpit, closed transom and classic cabin top.

Outlier has an internal carbon-reinforced keel structure to support the deep fin and lead bulb ballast appendage. Her three-spreader carbon mast, from Hall Spars , flies distinctive cream-colored 3Di sails from North Sails . Since Outlier’s owner doesn’t intend to take her offshore for extended cruises, the accommodations are clean, classic, and simple. The lightweight interior is built with paneled vertical grain white oak, and English brown oak cabin sole, and finished in satin varnish, while the underside of the deck is painted white for accent. There is a spacious main saloon amid ships connecting with a simple galley and well-equipped navigations station. A quarter berth aft offers sleeping accommodations adjacent to the cockpit, and a forward cabin has four bunks plus an fully enclosed head.

Outlier calls Nantucket her homeport.

This is Brooklin Boat Yard’s second collaboration with Botin Partners , having launched the 22m Toroa in 2017. Outlier’s owner selected Botin Partners and Brooklin Boat Yard to design and build this custom yacht after seeing Toroa .

Review: Silent 55, the extraordinary solar powered yacht

Yachting World

  • January 18, 2019

Silent Yachts is tapping into the solar zeitgeist and creating a new meaning for the term ‘powercat’. Sam Fortescue reports

Silent Yachts Silent 55

There is a slow, silent revolution under way in the yachting world. It is a revolution that is introducing tonnes of lithium and a sprinkling of silicon to the spec list of new boats. Holding out the promise of silent mobility, plus limitless domestic power on board, it made a big splash at the last Cannes Festival of Yachting – not least thanks to the new Silent 55 catamaran which debuted there.

From the pontoon side, the Silent 55 looks like a typical modern catamaran, with a big coachroof studded with windows and a flybridge helm. Except there’s no mast. Now, bear with me here. I realise that this is a sailing magazine, but we will shortly get back to more familiar territory. The unique qualities of this catamaran only become apparent from up top, where an expanse of solar panels stretches away fore and aft, embedded into the coachroof. The hard top itself carries yet more panels, and can be folded down flush to give an unshaded solar array of 49m2. During the heat of a summer day in the Med, this is capable of generating 10kW of power and up to around 60kWh in the course of the day.

Silent Yachts Silent 55 exterior

But to make a solar system work in reality, Köhler had to go back to the drawing board on yacht design. The saloon and hulls have extra thermal insulation to keep air-con losses down, and the use of carbon and aramid in key areas helps reduce the overall weight to a decent 17 tonnes (a Lagoon 52 weighs 22.5 tonnes). He has tried to keep windows out of the direct sun with long overhangs and in contrast to the Lagoon’s 12 deck hatches, the Silent 55 has just two.

Holistic design

On the other hand, it has lots of opening windows, to allow a natural draught to do its job. “It’s a holistic approach – you can’t take the batteries and the drivetrain and drop it into another boat.”

Of course, using the propulsion system quickly takes its toll of the boat’s 140kW battery bank. The model on display at Cannes had two 135kW motors, giving you just half an hour of silent motoring flat-out, albeit at a top speed of over 20 knots. More reasonable 30kW engines and a single-digit speed give you greater range. Nonetheless, the electric drive alone isn’t going to allow you to outrun a storm, or race home after a day at anchor, so the boat is designed to work with a generator hidden in the heavily insulated transom of its starboard hull. At cruising speed of around 5-6 knots, Köhler says there is rarely any need to use the generator, citing an owner who has just emailed him triumphantly about a second year totally generator-free. “In the end, you have to compare it to the performance of a sailing boat,” Köhler says. “It is as fast as a sailing boat in similar conditions – after all, there is no wind without sun.” He went so far as to tell me during the sea trial in Palma, Mallorca, that he believed the majority of sailors would happily dispense with the hassle of sails and a rig if only they could enjoy silent motoring and anchoring. “As soon as people realise the incredible concept of this boat, they won’t understand why they ever did anything else.”

The market does not seem to agree with him – yet. Sales of the boat have been good – they have already sold six, five of which are already in the water. But of those, four customers have taken the sail option, which means planting a 19.7m tall mast complete with boom and rigging slap bang in the middle of the coachroof solar array. “I was a bit amazed,” Köhler admits. “The shade from the rig reduces the energy generated by the solar area, while it costs more and is heavier, so consumes more fuel. Maybe it is for optical reasons.” In fact, the shade of the rig slashes the average yield of the solar panels in half. In the Med, that means around 30kWh per day. But perhaps it figures. The typical profile of buyers is an environmentalist who has a Tesla electric car and is “an early adopter who likes to have things before others”. And at low speeds, with modest use of the air-con, the reduced energy generation should still cover daily consumption.

Silent Yachts Silent 55 Sail Version exterior

The performance under sail should be reasonable because of the lightweight build of the boat, its broad 8.47m beam and stub keels added to each hull. Control lines are led back via conduits in the coachroof to the flybridge helm station, to make single-handing under sail a possibility.

More interesting, I think, is a sort of halfway-house option using a kite rig. This optimises the performance of the solar panels and gives plenty of propulsion. On the smaller 55 and the 64, Silent Yachts currently recommends a 19m2 kite that costs around €25,000 – a fraction of the cost of a new mast, boom, shrouds and sails. “The sail automatically makes a figure of eight above the boat, and you can steer it with a joystick or an app on an android phone,” Köhler explains. “It can propel the 55 at up to 6 knots, even in light winds.” Perfect for an Atlantic crossing, then.

For the bigger Silent 79, which will hit the water in the summer, a commercial grade Sky Sail system needs to be used – a smaller version of the ones used on cargo ships. This kite can propel the boat at ten knots, but it costs more than ten times as much as its smaller cousin. Both are capable of pulling the boat upwind. So far, so new. But outside the novel energy and propulsion system, the Silent 55 aims to do what many other cruising catamarans are trying to achieve. “Most of our clients order for circumnavigation and long-term cruising,” Köhler says. So the boat is aimed to be as comfortable and capable as possible with watermakers, TVs and an induction hob that all capitalise on the boat’s abundant energy. A flexible configuration allows owners the choice
of between three and six cabins – the latter designed for charter. The owner’s cabin lies forward of the saloon, under the windows of the coachroof, which provide magnificent views and abundant natural light. There’s a walk-around bed and steps down into the starboard hull give access to an en-suite shower room and heads.

Silent Yachts Silent 55 master cabin

In my view, the best cabin lies aft of this, accessed in the traditional manner down steps out of the saloon. The king-sized bed lies athwartships and the shower is larger than that of the master cabin. There’s more space down here, better headroom and still plenty of light courtesy of the many hull lights.

Silent Yachts Silent 55 guest cabin

When I had the chance to sea trial the Silent 55, albeit in motorboat format, I jumped at it. It was a contrary autumn day on Mallorca with 15 knots breeze – just a shame, then, that this wasn’t one of the sailing configured versions.

To start with, getting on board is made really easy courtesy of deep boarding platforms on the skirts. She feels rather square because of that vast, glazed saloon with its deep overhang, and perhaps because of the utilitarian nature of the hard top, which is really about supporting more solar panels. Nevertheless, the side decks are broad and uncluttered. The space up top is designed to concertina down flat, hence the hydraulic rams, fold-down seat back and lowering console. It makes a great sailing position, though, with all round visibility, and is also perfect for sundowners at anchor. When the rain comes down, this feels quite exposed, but there is a fully sheltered helm at the front of the saloon, and it is also possible to drive the boat from anywhere using a tablet thanks to smart electronics. Under power, the handling is superb. The quietness of the motors is astonishing, and I gather they’ll be inaudible on the next boat, which will do away with the gearbox. Even in the aft cabins, directly above the motors, there is no more than a distant hum. The boat responds instantly to the power and the wind seemed to have no impact at all. As with any propulsion system, the power consumption jumps as you pile on the speed – it was sobering to see. At 6 knots, both motors drew 10kW but at 8 knots it was closer to 30kW. I liked the huge saloon with its raised table for 360º views. And the sliding door and window gives great access aft, connecting the saloon and cockpit in fine conditions. The finish was smart and in muted tones, feeling more Scandinavian than German.

Intriguingly, at least it seems to me, Köhler has tapped into something with the concept behind Silent Yachts – but not entirely for the reasons that he expected. Buyers are opting for the sail or kite versions of the boat because they want a comfortable wind-powered craft with abundant, quiet energy on tap. It brings a whole new meaning to the
term ‘powercat’

a 55ft flybridge with diesels and living on it in south , at least part time if not full time.

I haven't pulled the trigger yet since im not sure if im ready or not.

THE PROS:

I would be paying cash, no loan to worry about.
I have 10k/m extra after my living expenses to put into it if needed.
I would be keeping it anchored in a safe area and living on it (almost always attended, not neglected).
I have spent the last 4 years looking at lots of and doing a lot of reading and on the .
I have a coast guard captains and other courses
I am a very experienced , but mostly with gas engines. I have worked on diesels doing minor .
I can do , , and other misc myself.
I have tons of tools, i pretty much own 1 of everything at least.
My house is 30min to the anchorage area. So its fast to get back and forth as needed.

A few things im worried about...

THE CONS:

I have 20yrs experience with , but all in the smaller size, jetskis and 20 to 23ft range - nothing anywhere near this large as a 55ft

I have limited experience with diesels

The hurricanes we get in south area concern. I understand from the locals that being in a cove on multiple anchors can out ok. Lots of boats in the cove survive like this, where they might get beat up in a marina. lots of people also just leave the area, but not sure where the best places are to go. a flybridge would be more effected by the than a smaller boat however. We dont get strong hurricanes very often, but its something to think about.

Im also concerned about leaving the boat alone at for any extended period of time. Lots of owners do this with smaller cheaper vessels. but maybe not a great idea with a larger more expensive boat.

Finally, i would be running the for Ac when onboard/night. im not sure what the cost is of that. or maybe i can get an additional smaller system to air condition the bedroom only and use less ?

thoughts?

thanks
-Phil

is a good start to owning a large fast .
At speeds (<9kt) you can expect to get 1-3mpg.
At planing or semi-planing speeds (>18kt) you can expect to use 1-3gal/nm.

If you only want to live on the boat with occasional short jaunts no problem.

If you want to go extended distances you need to plan ahead in terms of cost and where you can refuel.

A large will be able to support full boat AC at somewhere between 0.25-0.75gal/hr.

If you mount a lot of you may be able to cool 1 on along.

If I was going to use AC for a sleeping I would set the temp 75-78F so walking out into the morning wouldn’t be too brutal.
A house is but a boat so poorly built and so firmly run aground no one would think to try and refloat it.

If you've accurately described your mechanical skills, you're a good candidate for a successful .

Running a generator is expensive. 50 foot boat likely has at least a 12kw generator, perhaps 20kw. Figure 1 gph. Doesn't include every 200 hours, and other services. Plus at 10k hours. Long term, figure around $8/hr to run generator. Lot more expensive than $0.25/kwh in a marina.

As far as leaving a boat unattended in a field, can't help you but my sense is you're right to be concerned. A lot of anchor-out are a bit sketchy with derelict boats. Yours could look ripe to re-balance equity between the haves and have-nots.

. And I, too, would be concerned about leaving the boat unattended at (although you didn't say what "extended" is). If it were on a (in a mooring field) that would be less concerning - more secure both from a strength angle and with more boats around. Don't know if that is an option where you are; the Keys used to have some.

However, your biggest hurdle is going to be getting . It could (will) be difficult to find someone to cover you since you do not have experience in a similar sized vessel(s). They usually like to see a ~5 ft increase, not >20 ft. That is before even considering the issue. (They will probably want your plan in writing, and then follow it.)

time with a experienced in that size boat.)

And then... the insurer will require a "hurricane plan" and may also mandate haul-out with specific conditions (e.g., strapped down) or moving the boat out of the affected area. Latter has to happen about a week before hurricane arrival... and then that also depends on how firm the predicted track is. Some may accept a plan that says you'll move the boat to a protected cove, but that likely will not be your normal anchorage.

Read everything you can about storm anchoring, multiple anchor techniques and pros/cons, etc. Lots o' work.

Startup Selfie

In an ambitious step towards sustainable marine travel, German actor and environmental entrepreneur Daniel Roesner has teamed up with yacht design and engineering studio iYacht to create a 55-ft solar-electric catamaran named Hu’chu 55. This eco-friendly vessel, built with circularity in mind, aims to set new standards in yacht construction by utilizing scrap metal, reclaimed wood, and recycled cork.

Circular design and sustainable materials

The Hu’chu 55 catamaran represents a significant leap in sustainable yacht design. Roesner and iYacht have meticulously planned the use of environmentally friendly materials to minimize the vessel’s ecological footprint.

The catamaran’s primary structure will be crafted from an innovative aluminum alloy, composed of over 90% recycled scrap metal. This unique blend is sourced from various discarded items, including license plates, road signs, cosmetic cans, and automotive and construction scraps. Remarkably, this recycled aluminum boasts just one-eighth of the carbon footprint compared to standard market alternatives.

Beyond the metal framework, the Hu’chu 55 will incorporate natural fibers, reclaimed wood, and recycled cork. These materials not only reduce environmental impact but also enhance the vessel’s aesthetic and functional qualities, aligning with Roesner’s vision of a truly sustainable catamaran.

Efficient sailing and renewable energy

Designed to operate primarily under sail, the Hu’chu 55 features an advanced rig and sail system for optimal performance and ease of handling. The catamaran is equipped with three forestays, including a self-tacking staysail, an overlapping genoa jib, and a gennaker, all supported by optimized daggerboards. The mast’s strategic positioning towards the aft simplifies mainsail management, ensuring efficient and manageable sailing.

iYacht Huchu 55 Solar-electric Catamaran Scrap Metal

Complementing its sail power, the Hu’chu 55 is equipped with two electric motors and a 100-kWh battery pack. These batteries can be passively charged through the spinning propellers as the yacht sails, as well as via solar panels installed on the vessel. This dual charging system ensures a steady supply of renewable energy to meet the yacht’s power needs, including water treatment and onboard electronics, such as those in the film editing room.

Living and working at sea

Roesner’s plans for the Hu’chu 55 extend beyond leisure; he intends to live and work on the catamaran, producing documentaries and conducting ocean research. To support this lifestyle, iYacht has designed the vessel to navigate both high and low latitude destinations, incorporating features that enhance self-sufficiency and adaptability.

iYacht Huchu 55 Solar-electric Sailing Catamaran

Vertical hydroponic gardens are integrated amidships, providing fresh produce regardless of location. The yacht also includes dry storage for electronic equipment and two garages to house diving and sports gear. These features ensure that Roesner can maintain a sustainable, self-reliant lifestyle while pursuing his passion for environmental documentation and ocean exploration.

Moving from concept to reality

With the design phase complete, Roesner is actively seeking partners, sponsors, and investors to bring the Hu’chu 55 concept to life. Additionally, he is looking for shipyards experienced in aluminum construction to build the catamaran. This collaborative approach aims to pool resources and expertise, ensuring that the Hu’chu 55 not only meets its ambitious sustainability goals but also sets a precedent for future yacht designs.

Lagoon 43 catamaran

Details are starting to come out about the Lagoon 43, which is scheduled to make its debut in September at the Cannes Yachting Festival.

Lagoon 43 catamaran deck

This boat has naval architecture by VPLP Design, exteriors by Patrick le Quement, and interiors by Nauta Design. It’s a team that has produced a winning combination of elements on other models in the past.

Lagoon 43 catamaran

The Lagoon 43 is the third-smallest model in Lagoon’s lineup, intended for cruising couples or young families. Owners can order the Lagoon 43 in a three- or four-stateroom version that’s outfitted with between six and 13 berths—and the staterooms are larger than on previous models, meaning there’s room for families to grow or to welcome friends on board.

In the three-stateroom version, the entire starboard hull is an owners’ suite. In the four-stateroom version, that hull is split into two en suite staterooms. Either way, the owners’ berth is forward, in a location that’s undisturbed by engine noise for a good night’s rest.

Lagoon 43 illustration

Another new element on this model is redesigned access via an extra aft entryway for each hull. The idea is to make it easier for people moving between the boat and the dock.

Lagoon 43 galley

The dining space can seat 12 people, making dinner parties on the hook a comfortable experience with a great view of the surroundings.

What are the key specs on the Lagoon 43? Length overall is 45 feet, 6 inches; beam is 25 feet, 2 inches; and draft is 4 feet, 5 inches.
